Bug#508971: gdm: fails when a user has logged out and as other are still connected
Le vendredi 23 janvier 2009 à 21:17 -0500, Denis Laxalde a écrit : My graphics card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1) I'm currently using the nv X driver (1:2.1.10-1) but the problem also appears with the nvidia non-free driver (173.14.09-5). However, trying to restart the X server with CTRL+ALT+Backspace has no effect. Also, I recently noticed that the problem only appears when the user that had first logged-in disconnects. After that, the other user can log in through the gdm screen but then, another password window (the one which appears when the screen is locked) appears along with a system bip. This is of course expected if the other user is already connected: her session will be re-used instead of starting a new one. Where’s the bug here? -- .''`. : :' : We are debian.org. Bug#512825: apticron: Please document value to the current APT with its own cron job.
Package: apticron Version: 1.1.26 Severity: normal First some reminder: 1) I see this package has been updated with different package description at this stage of release. The content you added is best suited in README.Debian. This may caused translation mismatch issue for the package description. 2) To get this released for lenny, you need to write to debian-rele...@lists.debian.org with please unblock ... mail with required information. Now to the bug report. I think this package should describe its value clearly to the user for the current APT system. Let's look into situation. It seems to me, this apticron package is a quick fix to the current apt feature which seems to lack capability to send mail for prompting users to install packages when it is configured to do download only. Please note, APT package since 0.5.28 Ubuntu hoary and 0.5.29 Debian unstable (Sat, 13 Nov 2004) has its own script /etc/cron.daily/apt, which can do: * fancy auto-clean with rule * check and download upgradable packages automatically * automatic unattended upgrade + need to install unattended-upgrades package + aimed for security upgrade and have its blacklist capability + mail capability (The extent of this, i do not know for sure?) These can be enabled via apt configuration variables (usually stored in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/02backup and 50unattended-upgrades). Since this is enhancement script to apt, this should clearly document what part of apt this package will enhance etc. Also recommending to install cron-apt without mentioning apt's own capability is not kind to the user. We as users wonder why? When it is written in package description, this impact is big. Let's compare these: apt's cron script cron-apt script enable by adding parameter manually installing to cron download only shell script(main)shell script auto upgrade python script shell script complicated checkssimple apt-get -y upgrade Except for cron-apt script depending on python for auto-upgrade, I see no reason to recommend it over apt. At least both methods should be mentioned. Although I have no relation with Ubuntu, considering Ubuntu uses this apt's feature extensively, I think this is quite stable part of code. I am not very familiar with the whole picture. So I think further study might be needed to be correct. I hope to see more balanced documentation for what to do in README.Debian might be useful to everyone. (Also, adding patch to apt itself to do what apticron does might benefit more people.) Bug#512711: xserver-xorg-core: All keypresses repeated roughly three times each, makes login impossible
Nathan Davidson wrote: Package: xserver-xorg-core Version: 2:1.5.3-1 Severity: important Since upgrading to the Xorg in Experimental, any single keypress within an X session results in three of the corresponding characters appearing on the screen. For example, when I try to run xev to find out what's going on, what appears on the screen is xxxeeevvv. After the initial three characters have appeared, however, auto-repeat seems to kick in as normal, and some exacting use of the auto-repeat timing and the backspace key can allow a marginal amount of work to get done. As expected, xev shows three separate KeyPress and KeyRelease events corresponding to each physical keypress (and, of course, release). I just got the same problem when upgrading to xserver-xorg-core 1.6rc1 and fixed it by adding Option AutoAddDevices off to Section ServerFlags. Somehow, input-hotplug decided to add the keyboard twice (see the end of your log), so you get your configured keyboard plus these two auto-added ones. That's why each keypress is reported three times. Bug#512803: Why is su preserving the environment?
Le samedi 24 janvier 2009 à 09:04 +0100, Reinhard Tartler a écrit : the latter command indeed prunes the environment, and calling su -c gnome-terminal - sucessfully fails (heh) with failing to open a display. whats the problem here? su - is actually pruning the environment as it starts a login shell. This should be slightly orthogonal to preserving the environment. Actually, su -p - *does* preserve it. When not starting a login shell, the -p option does actually nothing (and the documentation doesn’t mention this). I think Steve has a point, and as he explains, this is not a big security issue; however it is breaking the expectations you have when logging as another user. For example, it is not expected that starting an application as the other user will re-use the running one, and it is not expected that accessing the GNOME keyring will show the passwords of the original user. -- .''`. : :' : We are debian.org. Bug#499191: Possible security issues
Not so. But this would mean that in many setups, any user would be allowed to execute any root-owned program under the document root that has mode +x as any _other_ user (above uid 100). This is something that no admin would expect. The restriction that suexec can only be executed by apache can often be circumvented. E.g. if user are allowed to create php scripts in ~/public_html. If a user is allowed to create a php script that will be executed as www-data, he can just go read everyone else's data (like a config.php which includes passwords to databases etc), because everyone else's data must be readable by www-data to get served by apache in this setup. Because of that, I don't think there are many setups allowing script execution as www-data, but yes, in such a case there is a side-effect with my suggestion, that most admins would not suspect. But I'm targeting another audience here :) One where www-data is a privileged user (has read access to everyone's data), and script execution is only allowed as the user itself using suexec. To circumvent the issue totally, I could modify it so that if the cmd is inside the docroot, then the owner of the cmd must be the target user. If the cmd is inside a cgi-docroot, then the owner must be root. (It's up to the admin to make these docroot's non overlapping :)). But the important thing is it first get back to a state where we can (somewhat) reliably reproduce the bug. I think we should see at least 3 aborts in a row before we do any changes. The reason is that we otherwise do not know if the config changed caused the situation to improve or that was just a random non-abort. That's the issue I have run into all time so far... Hello all, now this bug gets interesting... It has been over a week now since I reverted back to the original rsyslog version with remote logging activated and configuration file as it was originally when I had these crashes. Well... now there has been no problems although originally I had these crashes almost once a day. So currently I have been unable to reproduce this bug anymore. Could this bug had been caused by a bug in a library that rsyslog uses that would have been updated in the past week or so? If I manually kill all xdg-screensaver instances, I can successfully reopen the XVDR plugin. If I change the TV channel, playback again breaks, again with xdg-screensaver instances running and blocking the audio file handles (three of them actually.) I hope this is sufficient information to fix this bug. Regards, Daniel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? What is happening is this: - you install apt-xapian-index, and postinst runs an update - you then run an update by hand, and since it's version 0.13, it's not very good at detecting that another update is running - the first update finishes before the second, notices another index left around, thinks that it's an old index, and removes it - the second update complains that a file is missing, and aborts; however, the first update gave you a working index, so everything is fine. Solution: upgrade to version 0.15. How come you have 0.13 still around? OMG, it's the one for lenny. I'll see if I manage to get the new one in, which fixes this problem. Bug#512840: keychain: prints tput errors when stdout is not a tty
Package: keychain Version: 2.6.8-2 Severity: normal Tags: patch I run eval `keychain --eval --quiet --inherit any --quick` from my shell startup scripts. When stdout is not a tty (for example, when I ssh into this machine with a single command, rather than in such a way as to get an interactive shell), the following is printed on stderr: tput: No value for $TERM and no -T specified tput: No value for $TERM and no -T specified tput: No value for $TERM and no -T specified tput: No value for $TERM and no -T specified tput: No value for $TERM and no -T specified keychain does have the following code: # Don't use color if there's no terminal on stdout if [ -n $OFF ]; then tty 1 /dev/null 21 || unset BLUE CYAN GREEN OFF RED fi However, right at the top of the script, well before this check, it runs: type tput /dev/null 2/dev/null { BLUE=$(tput setaf 4) CYAN=$(tput setaf 6) GREEN=$(tput setaf 2) RED=$(tput setaf 1) OFF=$(tput sgr0) } It's this block that produces the errors. To start with, this is clearly not what the author meant; { list; } just means to execute the list in the current shell environment, which is a no-op in this context, and the 'type' command does nothing. The author appears to have been thinking in some different language and managed to render it into valid but incorrect shell. As far as I can divine the intent, this should have read: if type tput /dev/null 2/dev/null; then BLUE=$(tput setaf 4) CYAN=$(tput setaf 6) GREEN=$(tput setaf 2) RED=$(tput setaf 1) OFF=$(tput sgr0) fi In order to fix this bug, it should further be changed as expressed in the following patch: --- keychain.orig 2009-01-24 12:22:29.0 + +++ keychain2009-01-24 12:24:03.0 + @@ -42,14 +42,16 @@ confirmopt=false unset ssh_confirm -type tput /dev/null 2/dev/null -{ +# Don't use color if there's no terminal on stdout +if type tput /dev/null 2/dev/null tty 1 /dev/null 21; then BLUE=$(tput setaf 4) CYAN=$(tput setaf 6) GREEN=$(tput setaf 2) RED=$(tput setaf 1) OFF=$(tput sgr0) -} +else +unset BLUE CYAN GREEN RED OFF +fi # GNU awk and sed have regex issues in a multibyte environment. Bug#509292: rsyslog: random crashes with remote logging
Juha Koho wrote: Could this bug had been caused by a bug in a library that rsyslog uses that would have been updated in the past week or so? Rainer suspected atomic operations to be the root cause. This would mean a problem in GCC at compile time. rsyslog basically depends on zlib1g and libc6. I don't expect zlib1g to have any influence, so you might wanna check if libc6 has been updated on you system. Bug#512623: Mysql fails with illegal instruction error on a 486 (was: mysql: does not start (always crashes))
found 512623 5.0.32-7etch8 retitle 512623 Mysql fails with illegal instruction error on a 486 thanks model name : 486 That probablly explains it, I suspect mysqls build process is incorrectly building binaries that will only work on a pentium or higher. Some upstream build systems have a nasty habbit of overriding distro compiler configurations and doing things there own way and there are so few 486 users left this often doesn't get spotted until it's too late. You might want to try a local rebuild to see if that builds a binary that will run on your system. Given the point that etch is at in it's release cycle I think this is very unlikely to be fixed in etch. If you plan to continue using debian on 486 based machines I would suggest you start testing lenny on one now looking out for this bug and similar ones before it becomes stable and therefore too late for anything much to get done about such issues. I'm sorry, I thought all this information would be provided by Report Bug, which I used to file this bug report. reportbug normally does provide that information, maybe there was something odd in your setup. Josselin Mouette a écrit : Le vendredi 23 janvier 2009 à 21:17 -0500, Denis Laxalde a écrit : Also, I recently noticed that the problem only appears when the user that had first logged-in disconnects. After that, the other user can log in through the gdm screen but then, another password window (the one which appears when the screen is locked) appears along with a system bip. This is of course expected if the other user is already connected: her session will be re-used instead of starting a new one. Where’s the bug here? Actually, asking the password twice (in gdm and in the lock-screen window) seems to be the normal behavior and, although I don't see the interest of this, the bug is indeed not there. 2009/1/24 prosoluti...@gmx.net: I also want to point out one more thing that absolutely blows my mind: in /etc/default/snort is a line: PARAMS=-m 027 -D -d Is this correct? Why are the daemon parameters in this file? Yes. It is correct and, actually, standard in Debian packages. Take a look at /etc/default/exim4 or /etc/default/ntp, for example. In order to prevent users from modifying the init.d scripts directly only for parameter tweaking (which would produce issues when upgrading packages and the init.d changes) the parameters are moved over to a /etc/default file Getting back to /etc/snort/snort.debian.conf, I read Javier's advice to one user in a bug response regarding the ALLOW_UNAVAILABLE option mentioned earlier, that the user should not edit snort.debian.conf manually? What is this file doing there at all then? This totally does not make sense. Aren't there Debian policy guidelines against this kind of thing? Can a maintainer totally mince a package like this to the point where it doesn't make sense? /etc/snort/snort.debian.conf, just like many other configuration files, is handled by Debian's configuration management system Debconf. In order to vary those contents you are supposed, as explained in the file, to run dpkg-reconfigure snort This certainly looks like a problem in your debconf priority settings. You are probably running your debconf settings in a 'high' value. What value have you set there? If your default value is 'high' (certainly, not a recommended setting) then run 'dpkg-reconfigure -pmedium snort'. (or -plow) The debconf prompts will guide you on how to configure Snort to have it up and running in no time. Bug#512844: ffmpeg-debian breaks binary compatibility
Severity: normal Thanks The problem is that you are using mplayer from unstable, with ffmpeg from experimental. The experimental version of ffmpeg-debian creates libavcodec52, where your mplayer should depend on if you want to use it. But the ffmpeg in unstable builds/needs libavcodec51, so that is why mplayer depends on it. You can at this moment not mix ffmpeg from experimental with mplayer from unstable. Maybe ffmpeg should conflict with old versions of the libraries, ie Conflicts libavcodec51, libavcodec-unstripped-51 etc... Bug#512694: pidgin-facebookchat: package should depend on the pidgin package
Jonathan Davies wrote: 2009/1/23 Al Stone a...@ahs3.net: Jonathan Davies wrote: 2009/1/22 Al Stone a...@debian.org: I installed this package but did not have pidgin installed. Hence, I could not use the package until I installed pidgin. This should have been taken care of in the dependencies. This plugin is for both Pidgin and libpurple messengers (such as finch, adium, etc). Ah -- I was not aware of that. Now I understand the lack of dependencies. It does depend on libpurple, so something does get pulled in. Would it make any sense to have a pidgin-facebookchat package that depends on pidgin, a finch-facebookchat package that depends on finch, and so on? Or would that just add mindless clutter? For a simple .so file, I think that that would would add the later. But for the next upload I'll add finch and pidgin to suggests so the user knows what to pull in as well. Bug#506247: [boinc-client] boinc-client could also suggests cpulimit
On Wednesday 19 November 2008 21:29:10 clement R. wrote: Maybe boinc-client could suggests cpulimit in addition of schedtool.
