Bug#365730: corrupt nvram caused problem, not related to 'via-pmu: Server Mode'
Problem appears to be nvram corruption. Reset nvram from Open Firmware reset-nvram set-defaults reset-all (same procedure commonly used to 'repair' failing firewire and usb ports). Subsequent attempt to boot 5/3/06 daily image made it to the 'Trying to im_free...' hang from bug Bug#365844. --- Toni Harbaugh-Blackford [EMAIL PROTECTED] System Administrator Advanced Biomedical Computing Center (ABCC) National Cancer Institute Contractor - SAIC/Frederick -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#365730: corrupt nvram caused problem, not related to 'via-pmu: Server Mode'
I tried the usb again, and the crash came back but this time reset-nvram won't clear it. For now, I am going to assume there is just something flaky about this box, since the other xserves behave themselves. But I don't want to risk using the usb ports on the other xserves since that appears to be the trigger. Thanks, Toni. Bug#365735: rsync: performance problem
Package: rsync Version: 2.6.8-2 Severity: normal Hello, I am experiencing a performance problem rsync'ing from one machine to another in my LAN. The LAN is 100MBit/s Ethernet, idle, and the two machines are also mostly idle, with rsync + ssh together using less than 15% CPU on the slower machine, and some 3% on average on the faster (receiving) machine. The drives are U160 or U320 in the sender machine, and SATA in the other. Therefore, I expect the network to be saturated by the transfer. But in reality, I get a varying transfer rate between some 200KB/s and 7MB/s, with some 500KB/s on average (over hours, I'm trying to transfer some 50 gigs). When I transfer large, already compressed, files or ISOs, transfer is abysmally slow, and when I transfer lots of small files, performance soars. I have RSYNC_RSH=ssh on both ends, and transfer using rsync -av (note: not -u, not -z) in order to minimize CPU usage. But the drive lights also don't indicate much activity. What gives? And why is transfer over a WAN consistently fast enough to saturate my WAN link(s), ie, faster than in my LAN (but using different data)? Best, --Toni++ PS: Not tagging minor because of the impact this problem has for me. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.4.27-2-686-smp Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages rsync depends on: ii libc6 2.3.6-7GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libpopt0 1.7-5 lib for parsing cmdline parameters rsync recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. This may be user error though as I would expect booting from usb stick to require a hd-media image (like for i386), though I'm not sure of that. I would do this but the hd-media for ppc is only the 32bit one. Does it matter? I have booted other cd images from the usb stick on ppc. It seems to work as long as the 'cd' driver gets mapped ok. More specifically, section 11.6 of Debian policy says: ... all MTA packages must have Provides, Conflicts and Replaces: mail-transport-agent control file fields. thanks for the explanation, but the bigger problem is that the Postfix package is built in a way that effectively prevents installing another MTA using --force alongside Postfix because sendmail is not a symlink as it is in many other MTAs, but a binary, and the effects of displacing that are unpredictable (to me). If it were, eg. sendmail.postfix alongside a symlink from sendmail to sendmail.postfix and Postfix internal programs would use the name 'sendmail.postfix', I probably wouldn't have a problem. Bug#354850: mysql-server: upgrade 4.1-5.0 may break installation
Package: mysql-server Version: 5.0.18-8 Severity: normal Hello, when upgrading from 4.1 to 5.0, I get a message cannot upgrade if ISAM tables are present. Ok... why not convert them? But hey, the old server which could have done it is already removed at the time I get this message, and the installation process just bails out... bummer! Bug#333953: problem still exists in bash 3.1
Hello, today I stumbled upon this behaviour, too. I have: $ dpkg -l bash ... ii bash 3.1-1 The GNU Bourne Again SHell and $ shopt|grep case nocaseglob off nocasematch off but still get this stupid behaviour unless I set LC_COLLATE=C (as you suggest). I'd be less discontent with this LUSER feature if there'd be at least the semi-usual mixed-case matching (ie, ignore case if all pattern elements are lower case, but obey it otherwise), but setting these two options shown above should really be sufficient to prevent automatic case folding. As a side note, automatic case folding does _NOT_ improve usability because everything else in Unix and assorted flavours is case-sensitive, thus this change only blurs the distinction to Unix novices which will confuse them down the road when they end up with files like abc.txt and Abc.txt and no way to recognize the difference, much less differentiate them. Package: xcdroast Version: 0.98+0alpha15-3 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** Hello, recently I'm running into a problem writing a (ready-made) ISO to CD. Package: tgif Version: 1:4.1.44-4 Severity: normal Tags: patch Hello, the program pstoepsi is broken in several ways: - When using the option -2x, checking for the source file is done in an incorrect way. The attached patch fixes this. - The program assumes that it can use a program pbmtoepsi has an option -scale, which the version included with Debian has not. Thus, scaling breaks. - In the branch at line 98, there is a redundant setting of STYLE, which the patch also fixes, but it doesn't fix the case that later on, the overwritten value of STYLE is tested against. Bug#335676: postgresql: locale problems (guc.c)

Sorry, but I already removed (with purge and rm -rf /var/lib/postgres) the packages postgresql and postgresql-contrib, added a bunch of locales, regenerated them, reinstalled and chose a UTF-8 locale this time. Bug#331409: bash: job control often doesn't work

Bug#324389: roundup: registering does not work (too many redirects)
Package: roundup Version: 0.8.4-1 Severity: normal Hello, I have a fresh install of roundup together with PostgreSQL as the backend and runit as the mechanism to run (as distributed in the package), but under a dedicated user roundup. Also, I have immediate_registration = no which forces email verification. When I try to register, I get this: Redirection limit for this page exceeded. Unable to load the requested page. This may be caused by cookies that are blocked. The result is that the table 'otks' fills up, the mail gets sent, but when I click the resulting confirmation link, I get redirected to the home page of the tracker, and that's it. If I then try to log in as the user I should be logged in as anyway, I get Unknown user (clicking the confirmation link should log me in automatically). The table _user doesn't get filled. Bug#316956: Same problem with Apache1.3 and mod_perl
Hi, just for the record, I see the same error with Apache 1.3 and mod_perl (both latest in sid). Taking a peek in the appropriate file, which seems to be /usr/share/perl5/HTML/Mason/Resolver/File.pm I find that there is indeed no variable comp_root_array, but that this has become a local variable in one of the remaining subroutines. Looks like a major package overhaul has taken place behind the back of RT... Since I only use the web interface, RT is severely broken for me right now. :-| Will peek at 3.4 and see if that solves the problem. I guess (or rather hope) that this has become to be a dwindling minority case in the last few years. At least I'm not aware of any modern system that can't handle MD5 passwords, and I also think that MD5 passwords should be the default for any new installations. There's no reason why passwords should be limited to 8 characteres _specially_ if you are using MD5 (and not crypt) to store passwords which allows for a much higher password length. ACK, and on our systems, about the first thing I do is upping the limits on password sizes. Best, --Toni++ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#304735: LDBM and 2.2.x
Hello, fwiw, I have 2.2.23 with ldbm backend running w/o a hitch on OpenBSD, but breaking down completely on Debian almost sarge. Esp. I can browse the directory and find whatever I want, but don't see these same records when I use search (with gq or ldapsearch, that is). Also, looking at http://www.openldap.org/software/release/changes.html suggests that a number of important bugs have been killed between 2.2.23 and now, although that might be too late for sarge. Btw, aren't there any regression test suites to run before promoting such packages, and/or can we probably move to having the debian/* stuff in a publicly accessible CVS or something (I prefer ARCH), to be able to recreate older packages at any date (analogous to the BSD ports system)? Look here: http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-openldap/openldap/debian/ Ok, thank you! (I thought of having this for *all* Debian packages because the problem arises frequently, imho). While I have marked two things above as errors, they are not critical. Problem with installing the boot loader: I tried to *not* install aboot on the system, since d-i always messes with the beginning of my disk so that Tru64 can't read the label anymore. I wanted to do 'swriteboot' by hand, so I did not create an aboot partition, and d-i initially told me that it would not put aboot on the disk. But then after the packages were installed, d-i went ahead and tried to put aboot on the disk anyway. Even when the aboot installation fails the beginning of the disk is corrupted. The install can be saved, since the problem can be repaired by rewriting the disklabel in Tru64 and then running swriteboot by hand from another debian installation or bootable cd. But it would be nice if d-i would not corrupt the beginning of the disk, whether it writes aboot out there or not. Problem with reboot: For serial console-only systems, 'console=ttyS0' is not appended to the boot flags. If you think about it ahead of time, you can get into a shell from within d-i and 'fix' the aboot.conf by hand. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#304054: moinmoin-common: migration script missing
Hi Jonas, On Mon, 11.04.2005 at 04:12:48 +0200, Jonas Smedegaard [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On 10-04-2005 17:50, Toni Mueller wrote: the migration scripts 12_to_13_migN are missing. How do you mean missing? Are they not (as documented in README.migration) located at /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/MoinMoin/scripts/migration ? I did this: $ dpkg -L moinmoin-common|grep 12_to $ Although I looked in this README.migration, I didn't exactly try to follow this 'generic' hint, although you are right in so far as the files are there. Instead, these files are in the package python2.3-moinmoin which I didn't take into account. Darn! So let's at least downgrade to 'minor'. It is true that wikis created with the use of earlier unstable and testing Debian packages of MoinMoin does not work as-is with the most recent packages now in Debian unstable and testing. Manual upgrade of each wiki is necessary. I managed to do this, and apparently uncovered a bug on the way the MoinMoin people are already looking at. I have chosen to not support automatic upgrades of old wikis, as that would be too complex, because there is no central record of the wikis created on a system. Yes, this is quite understandable. But a bigger warning a la you need to shut down your wikis until you upgraded, possibly along with an option to bail out (like in the kernel-image packages) would imho be more appropriate since running with mixed code yields severly broken pages in the best case, and, according to the docs, corrupted data in the worst. I have chosen to not introduce the use of debconf notes to not make the packages unnecessary complex: The warning would be of use only for users of testing and unstable - those must be prepared for surprises, and this one does not include loss of data, only downtime of the service (and if you want you can install an older package and old wikis will work fine again). Thanks... I still wonder how users of woody will upgade once sarge hits the streets, then, and as to no data loss - the conversion scripts tell a different story. For users of unstable and testing (and stable as well) I can warmly recommend keeping track of at least NEWS items, by installing apt-listchanges. I do have this package installed, and indeed saw a message amounting to you need to upgrade manually. Best, --Toni++ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. However, the package doesn't upgrade the database, and after a wordpress upgrade, it's impossible to post new posts or view comments. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.3-1-386 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages wordpress depends on: ii apache [httpd]1.3.33-4 versatile, high-performance HTTP s ii mysql-server 4.0.23-7 mysql database server binaries ii php4 4:4.3.10-8 server-side, HTML-embedded scripti ii php4-mysql4:4.3.10-8 MySQL module for php4 -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#273871: getting libsilc to Testing
Hi. I'm not a Debian developer, so I don't know (nor really care) about the policy. What should be done, and by who, to get libsilc package to Testing? There are more than one SILC client packages (GAIM's SILC plugin and Silky) on hold because of this. - Toni -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#277652: failure to rotate one set of logs breaks all other rotations
Hi, I've stumbled over a very similar problem: after removing a package (squid2.7 in my case), no other logs were rotated anymore. That's sort of a show-stopper if you have some logs growing fast... Being forced to purge a package in order to keep using logrotate should even warrant raising the severity, imho. Bug#291636: pidentd: patch for the load issue
tags 291636 + sid patch security thanks Hi, I managed to fix the issue. The original one I had on other(non-SMP) machine that some java processes doesn't authenticate correctly, and the problems arised when hammering a port(on a SMP machine; forgot to mention explicitly, sorry). The fix for the actual problem was already in 3.0.16-7 (assumably written by Herbert Xu, basing on the patch made by Paul Szabo. See #208290 for details), but didn't apply cleanly to the new upstream version. I rewrote/merged few parts that had problems applying cleanly. A patch attached. PS. As it seems (eg. according to #291180 ) there are few parts missing from the previous debian diff. You might consider applying them too. So, for convenience, also a cleanly applying patch containing those missing parts not directly related to #291636 or #291180 is also attached. -- Toni Timonen toni dot timonen at iki dot fi NP Solutions Ltd Helsinki University of Technology Department of Engineering Physics and Mathematics diff -rub us/pidentd-3.0.18/debian/changelog try3/pidentd-3.0.18/debian/changelog --- us/pidentd-3.0.18/debian/changelog 2005-01-21 19:41:09.0 +0200 +++ try3/pidentd-3.0.18/debian/changelog2005-01-22 16:56:25.0 +0200 @@ -1,3 +1,10 @@ +pidentd (3.0.18-1.1) unstable; urgency=low + + * Non-maintainer upload. + * Reapplied the TCPDIAG support patch. + + -- Toni Timonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat, 22 Jan 2005 16:56:08 +0200 + pidentd (3.0.18-1) unstable; urgency=low * New upstream release. diff -rub us/pidentd-3.0.18/src/kernel.c try3/pidentd-3.0.18/src/kernel.c --- us/pidentd-3.0.18/src/kernel.c 2004-06-13 10:47:52.0 +0300 +++ try3/pidentd-3.0.18/src/kernel.c2005-01-22 16:55:36.0 +0200 @@ -107,7 +107,7 @@ if (debug) fprintf(stderr, ka_lookup(), attempt = %d, status = %d\n, attempt, kp-status); - if (kp-status 0) + if (kp-status = 0) break; if (attempt 2 (attempt 1) == 1) diff -rub us/pidentd-3.0.18/src/k_linux.c try3/pidentd-3.0.18/src/k_linux.c --- us/pidentd-3.0.18/src/k_linux.c 2003-01-09 01:02:26.0 +0200 +++ try3/pidentd-3.0.18/src/k_linux.c 2005-01-22 16:54:45.0 +0200 @@ -17,15 +17,28 @@ #include stdio.h #include syslog.h #include errno.h +#include unistd.h #include sys/types.h #include sys/param.h #include sys/socket.h #include netinet/in.h +#include netinet/tcp.h #include arpa/inet.h +#include linux/types.h +#include linux/netlink.h +#include linux/tcp_diag.h + #include pidentd.h +struct kainfo +{ +int nlfd; +__u32 seq; +FILE *proc_net_tcp; +}; + /* ** Make sure we are running on a supported OS version */ @@ -39,23 +52,85 @@ int ka_open(void **misc) { -FILE *fp; +struct kainfo *kp; +kp = s_malloc(sizeof(*kp)); -while ((fp = fopen(/proc/net/tcp, r)) == NULL errno == EINTR) - ; +kp-seq = 0; +kp-nlfd = socket(AF_NETLINK, SOCK_DGRAM, NETLINK_TCPDIAG); +if (kp-nlfd = 0) +goto out; -if (fp == NULL) +syslog(LOG_INFO, netlink failed, fallback to /proc/net/tcp: %m); +kp-proc_net_tcp = fopen(/proc/net/tcp, r); + +if (kp-proc_net_tcp == NULL) { syslog(LOG_ERR, fopen(\/proc/net/tcp\, \r\): %m); return -1; } -*misc = (void *) fp; +out: +*misc = (void *) kp; return 0; } +static int +netlink_lookup(struct kainfo *kip, struct kernel *kp) +{ +int status; +struct { +struct nlmsghdr nlh; +union { +struct tcpdiagreq req; +struct tcpdiagmsg rsp; +} u; +} buf; +struct sockaddr_nl addr; + +memset(buf, 0, sizeof(buf)); +buf.nlh.nlmsg_len = NLMSG_ALIGN(NLMSG_LENGTH(sizeof(buf.u.req))); +buf.nlh.nlmsg_type = TCPDIAG_GETSOCK; +buf.nlh.nlmsg_flags = NLM_F_REQUEST; +buf.nlh.nlmsg_seq = ++kip-seq; +buf.u.req.tcpdiag_family = AF_INET; + +buf.u.req.id.tcpdiag_dport = kp-remote.sin_port; +buf.u.req.id.tcpdiag_sport = kp-local.sin_port; +buf.u.req.id.tcpdiag_dst[0] = kp-remote.sin_addr.s_addr; +buf.u.req.id.tcpdiag_src[0] = kp-local.sin_addr.s_addr; +buf.u.req.id.tcpdiag_cookie[0] = TCPDIAG_NOCOOKIE; +buf.u.req.id.tcpdiag_cookie[1] = TCPDIAG_NOCOOKIE; + +status = write(kip-nlfd, buf, buf.nlh.nlmsg_len); +if (status 0) { +syslog(LOG_ERR, netlink_lookup: write failed: %m); +return 3; +} + +do { +socklen_t alen = sizeof(addr); +status = recvfrom(kip-nlfd, buf, sizeof(buf), 0, + (void *)addr, alen); +if (status 0) { +if (errno == ENOBUFS) +return -1; +syslog(LOG_ERR, netlink_lookup: recvfrom failed: %m); +return 3; +} +} while (addr.nl_pid || buf.nlh.nlmsg_seq != kip-seq); + +if (buf.nlh.nlmsg_type != TCPDIAG_GETSOCK) +return 0
Bug#291636: pidentd: New version is DoS-able and doesn't work well on load
Package: pidentd Version: 3.0.18-1 Severity: important Hi, the new version 3.0.18-1 has some problems when ran on machines having enough network traffic. First symptom that caused me to start looking was that sometimes java processes don't get authenticated correctly (very annoying when used with tomcat4 and ident authentication of postgresql). One way to reproduce the problem: -Run an irc server. -Put a torture script running: $ while [[ 1 ]]; do nc -z -v localhost 6667; done -Wait a while (15-30 seconds). -Try eg. indent-authenticate to postgresql server. Expected result (and behaviour of 3.0.16-7 in the same test): -Some system load -Running 7 identd processes -Some (one or two) zombies can be seen when repeatingly run 'ps -fA | grep ident'. -ident authentication works for other processes. Actual result: -Heavy system load. Some identd processes are running and eating all available cpu even after 5 minutes of actual port-hammering. -More than 100 identd -processes. -And the most important: authentication stops working. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.4.27-SMP Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages pidentd depends on: ii adduser 3.59 Add and remove users and groups ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-20 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libssl0.9.7 0.9.7e-2 SSL shared libraries ii netbase 4.19 Basic TCP/IP networking system ii passwd 1:4.0.3-30.7 Change and administer password and -- no debconf information -- Toni Timonen toni dot timonen at iki dot fi NP Solutions Ltd Helsinki University of Technology Department of Engineering Physics and Mathematics signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#290261: debfoster: Curses-frontend
