Problem appears to be nvram corruption.  Reset nvram from Open Firmware

  reset-nvram
  set-defaults
  reset-all

(same procedure commonly used to 'repair' failing firewire and usb ports).

Subsequent attempt to boot 5/3/06 daily image made it to the 'Trying to
im_free...' hang from bug Bug#365844.

I tried the usb again, and the crash came back but this
time reset-nvram won't clear it.

For now, I am going to assume there is just something flaky
about this box, since the other xserves behave themselves.

But I don't want to risk using the usb ports on the other xserves
since that appears to be the trigger.

Possibly due to conflict between serial drivers.  pmac_zilog needs

Comments/Problems:

Boot crashes right after 'core99_setup_cpu 0 done' message.  Note that this
installation attempt was identical to that in Bug#365844.  A different Xserve
box was used, although an identical model to the box in Bug#365844 (both are
members of the same Xserve cluster).

The only difference between the two machines is that the USB ports in this
one have been used, whereas the USB ports in the box from Bug#365844 have
never been touched.  NO USB devices were plugged in at the time of the
attempt.  The only external device was the firewire cd.

Note also that this box and all it's ports work fine under Mac OS X

Bug#365859: found difference between boot logs of the two xserves

Bug#365735: rsync: performance problem

Hello,

I am experiencing a performance problem rsync'ing from one machine to
another in my LAN. The LAN is 100MBit/s Ethernet, idle, and the two
machines are also mostly idle, with rsync + ssh together using less than
15% CPU on the slower machine, and some 3% on average on the faster
(receiving) machine. The drives are U160 or U320 in the sender machine,
and SATA in the other. Therefore, I expect the network to be saturated
by the transfer.  But in reality, I get a varying transfer rate between
some 200KB/s and 7MB/s, with some 500KB/s on average (over hours, I'm
trying to transfer some 50 gigs). When I transfer large, already
compressed, files or ISOs, transfer is abysmally slow, and when I
transfer lots of small files, performance soars. I have RSYNC_RSH=ssh on
both ends, and transfer using rsync -av (note: not -u, not -z) in order
to minimize CPU usage. But the drive lights also don't indicate much
activity.

What gives?

And why is transfer over a WAN consistently fast enough to saturate my
WAN link(s), ie, faster than in my LAN (but using different data)?

   simple installer folk.

   This may be user error though as I would expect booting from usb stick to
   require a hd-media image (like for i386), though I'm not sure of that.

I would do this but the hd-media for ppc is only the 32bit one.  Does it
matter?

I have booted other cd images from the usb stick on ppc.  It seems to work
as long as the 'cd' driver gets mapped ok.

  
   Toni: You may also want to try with a new daily build of the installer
   which uses a 2.6.16 kernel. Note that the powerpc cd builds have been
   broken for a while, but we expect to get (finally) new ones in tonight's
   run, so check the date before you download.

powerpc is dead or almost so, and i strongly recomend you to go find

distribution to run which cares a bit more about the powerpc architecture.
  
   I'd rather prefer if you don't overexegerate.

I'm not sure he's exagerating.  There has been a grave silence about the
daily images not building, for anyone who doesn't access IRC anyway.

I would have expected to see some mention of it on the list so people who
don't stay on IRC (and people who are only interested in the ppc architecture)
would know what was going on.

After that, the tree is no longer lint-clean:

thanks for the explanation, but the bigger problem is that the Postfix
package is built in a way that effectively prevents installing another
MTA using --force alongside Postfix because sendmail is not a symlink
as it is in many other MTAs, but a binary, and the effects of
displacing that are unpredictable (to me). If it were, eg.
sendmail.postfix alongside a symlink from sendmail to sendmail.postfix
and Postfix internal programs would use the name 'sendmail.postfix', I
probably wouldn't have a problem.

programs is affected, and I'm not sure if my most recent series of gq
crashes (usually rock solid for me) could be attributed to this

Noteworthy is that it takes considerable time, apparently almost a
minute, between where apt-proxy spits out the first parts of that
backtrace and the last parts of it, after which it looks like it resumes

Looks like installation will succeed IF the sbp2 module can be make to work.
Unfortunately, the spb2 module cannot be loaded due to an error.

The start of installation went fine.  I set the input-device and output-device
to scca, devalias'd 'cd' to the external firewire drive and did

   0  boot cd:,\install\yaboot

At the boot prompt, I specified the install64 option:

   boot: install64 video=ofonly console=ttyS0,57600

Installation started, got all the way up to the point of finding the cd,
but then could not find the cd.  I went into a shell and tried to load the
sbp2 module by hand but got the following error:

when upgrading from 4.1 to 5.0, I get a message cannot upgrade if ISAM
tables are present. Ok... why not convert them? But hey, the old server
which could have done it is already removed at the time I get this
message, and the installation process just bails out... bummer!

I suggest that the upgrade script _first_ determines if there are any
ISAM tables left over, then offers to automatically convert them to
MyISAM (or just do it, don't know), and then removes the old server and
installs the new one, not the other way round. Currently, I have:

Maybe you should consider changing the UI of the partitioning module. It's
still the same interface like in sarge text mode.
E.g. setting the boot flag to enabled on any partition by clicking on the
button Next is a bit strange (in contrast to installers of other

today I stumbled upon this behaviour, too. I have:

$ dpkg -l bash

and

$ shopt|grep case
nocaseglob  off
nocasematch off

but still get this stupid behaviour unless I set LC_COLLATE=C (as you
suggest). I'd be less discontent with this LUSER feature if there'd be
at least the semi-usual mixed-case matching (ie, ignore case if all
pattern elements are lower case, but obey it otherwise), but setting
these two options shown above should really be sufficient to prevent
automatic case folding. As a side note, automatic case folding does
_NOT_ improve usability because everything else in Unix and assorted
flavours is case-sensitive, thus this change only blurs the distinction
to Unix novices which will confuse them down the road when they end up
with files like abc.txt and Abc.txt and no way to recognize the
difference, much less differentiate them.

ok. I got a different impression at first about the libCGAL.so.

After doing QPL-cleanup:

Build do fails. There seems to be some debug headers that the core
uses. 

Fortunately it is rather easy to fix (either fixing the license of the
debug headers or the use of the debug header with an attached patch).

sort of annoying.

recently I'm running into a problem writing a (ready-made) ISO to CD.
The logs show that there's odd behaviour of the drive together with a
note to report this. My setup includes hda (IDE drive, ATA-100) and hdc
(the writer, also ATA-100), each on a different bus, as well as two
real SCSI drives (10k). When I try to write an image from the IDE
drive, I get buffer underruns which should not happen on this drive
(see attached log cd1.log), and when I write an image from a SCSI
drive, xcdroast says that writing was ok (see attached log cd2.log),
but trying to verify the CD after writing always fails at some 97%. I'm
a bit at a loss as to why that happens and realize that these might be
problems with the cdrecord package instead of xcdroast itself. But
since I'm no CD expert, I'll start here.

of the postgres-contrib-7.4 package) under unstable with roundup.
Trying to initialise a tracker yields:

the program pstoepsi is broken in several ways:

- When using the option -2x, checking for the source
  file is done in an incorrect way. The attached patch
  fixes this.

- The program assumes that it can use a program pbmtoepsi
  has an option -scale, which the version included with
  Debian has not. Thus, scaling breaks.

- In the branch at line 98, there is a redundant setting of
  STYLE, which the patch also fixes, but it doesn't fix
  the case that later on, the overwritten value of STYLE
  is tested against. If this is simply a piece of dead code,
  or if this hides another problem, I didn't investigate.

I've tried switching locales, ISO-8859-1/-15/UTF-8 in both en_US and fi_FI.

Suddenly, postgresql won't start anymore. Logs say:

Hey Martin, and thanks for the speedy reply!

Sorry, but I already removed (with purge and rm -rf /var/lib/postgres)
the packages postgresql and postgresql-contrib, added a bunch of
locales, regenerated them, reinstalled and chose a UTF-8 locale this
time. It started working.

However, I do believe dpkg-reconfigure postgresql gave me the option
to choose a locale (and it showed the correct choices), yet didn't
change the option in postgresql itself.

bash's job control doesn't work rather often, at least not under X11.

Example:

$ vi .bashrc
^Z

Now the process hangs. In 'ps ax|grep vi' I can see this:

 8078 pts/14   T+ 0:00 vi .bashrc

If I now say 'kill -CONT 8078', I'm back in vi and can continue to edit
the file normally, but this way I'm restricted from doing most anything
which includes job control. The problem also happens with 'less',
therefore I concluded that bash was the common factor, and thus the
target of the bug.

I have a fresh install of roundup together with PostgreSQL as the
backend and runit as the mechanism to run (as distributed in the
package), but under a dedicated user roundup. Also, I have
immediate_registration = no which forces email verification.

When I try to register, I get this:

Redirection limit for this page exceeded. Unable to load the requested
page. This may be caused by cookies that are blocked.

The result is that the table 'otks' fills up, the mail gets sent, but
when I click the resulting confirmation link, I get redirected to the
home page of the tracker, and that's it. If I then try to log in as the
user I should be logged in as anyway, I get Unknown user (clicking the
confirmation link should log me in automatically). The table _user
doesn't get filled. Observed with Firefox 1.0.6 and Opera 8.0.2. Trying
this with Elinks reveals this header:

HTTP/1.0 301 Moved Permanently
Server: BaseHTTP/0.3 Python/2.3.5
Date: ... (date header)
Location: http://spruce:9300/[EMAIL PROTECTED]//


(10 slashes). The effect is the same, though - no user gets registered.

just for the record, I see the same error with Apache 1.3 and
mod_perl (both latest in sid). Taking a peek in the appropriate
file, which seems to be

/usr/share/perl5/HTML/Mason/Resolver/File.pm

I find that there is indeed no variable comp_root_array, but that
this has become a local variable in one of the remaining
subroutines. Looks like a major package overhaul has taken place
behind the back of RT...

Since I only use the web interface, RT is severely broken for
me right now. :-|

Will peek at 3.4 and see if that solves the problem.

I wrote a patch for gnupg to handle readonly keyrings correctly.
What it does now, is that when you try to modify a key in a keyring 
that is not writable it makes a copy of that keyring to a writable one
and modifies it.

imho there's only one reason for this, namely, to cater for legacy
installations who don't use MD5 passwords. I guess (or rather hope)
that this has become to be a dwindling minority case in the last few
years. At least I'm not aware of any modern system that can't handle
MD5 passwords, and I also think that MD5 passwords should be the
default for any new installations.

 There's no reason why passwords should be limited to 8 characteres 
 _specially_ if you are using MD5 (and not crypt) to store passwords which 
 allows for a much higher password length.

ACK, and on our systems, about the first thing I do is upping the
limits on password sizes.

fwiw, I have 2.2.23 with ldbm backend running w/o a hitch on OpenBSD,
but breaking down completely on Debian almost sarge.

Esp. I can browse the directory and find whatever I want, but don't see
these same records when I use search (with gq or ldapsearch, that
is).

Also, looking at http://www.openldap.org/software/release/changes.html
suggests that a number of important bugs have been killed between
2.2.23 and now, although that might be too late for sarge.

Btw, aren't there any regression test suites to run before promoting
such packages, and/or can we probably move to having the debian/* stuff
in a publicly accessible CVS or something (I prefer ARCH), to be able
to recreate older packages at any date (analogous to the BSD ports
system)?

run properly using bdb).

out hard because the machine simply crashes shortly after. This makes
the machine in question unreliable, crashing at least every few weeks.
Therefore I'm flagging this bug as important.

Hardware is a rather new IBM x205, with ServeRAID4, GigE, and 1GB RAM.

Ok. I thought I was clear enough. The error messages I see are at

Comments/Problems:

Everthing went well.  While I have marked two things
above as errors, they are not critical.

Problem with installing the boot loader:

  I tried to *not* install aboot on the system, since d-i
  always messes with the beginning of my disk so that Tru64
  can't read the label anymore.  I wanted to do 'swriteboot'
  by hand, so I did not create an aboot partition, and d-i
  initially told me that it would not put aboot on the disk.
  But then after the packages were installed, d-i went ahead
  and tried to put aboot on the disk anyway.  Even when the
  aboot installation fails the beginning of the disk is
  corrupted.  The install can be saved, since the problem
  can be repaired by rewriting the disklabel in Tru64 and
  then running swriteboot by hand from another debian
  installation or bootable cd.  But it would be nice if
  d-i would not corrupt the beginning of the disk, whether
  it writes aboot out there or not.

Problem with reboot:

  For serial console-only systems, 'console=ttyS0' is not
  appended to the boot flags.  If you think about it ahead
  of time, you can get into a shell from within d-i
  and 'fix' the aboot.conf by hand.

 in oom cases 2.6.11 is very recommended as it has nice fixes from -aa
 in that release.

I have an identical machine running 2.6.10 with no problems. Why does
one machine exhibit this problem, and the other doesn't?

Although I looked in this README.migration, I didn't exactly try to
follow this 'generic' hint, although you are right in so far as the
files are there.

Instead, these files are in the package python2.3-moinmoin which I
didn't take into account. Darn! So let's at least downgrade to 'minor'.

 It is true that wikis created with the use of earlier unstable and
 testing Debian packages of MoinMoin does not work as-is with the most
 recent packages now in Debian unstable and testing. Manual upgrade of
 each wiki is necessary.

I managed to do this, and apparently uncovered a bug on the way the
MoinMoin people are already looking at.

 I have chosen to not support automatic upgrades of old wikis, as that
 would be too complex, because there is no central record of the wikis
 created on a system.

Yes, this is quite understandable. But a bigger warning a la you need
to shut down your wikis until you upgraded, possibly along with an
option to bail out (like in the kernel-image packages) would imho be
more appropriate since running with mixed code yields severly broken
pages in the best case, and, according to the docs, corrupted data in
the worst.

 I have chosen to not introduce the use of debconf notes to not make the
 packages unnecessary complex: The warning would be of use only for users
 of testing and unstable - those must be prepared for surprises, and this
 one does not include loss of data, only downtime of the service (and if
 you want you can install an older package and old wikis will work fine
 again).

Thanks... I still wonder how users of woody will upgade once sarge hits
the streets, then, and as to no data loss - the conversion scripts
tell a different story.

 For users of unstable and testing (and stable as well) I can warmly
 recommend keeping track of at least NEWS items, by installing
 apt-listchanges.

I do have this package installed, and indeed saw a message amounting to
you need to upgrade manually.

languages, but requires proper handling of very long integers.

This is not the case: underway, the variables were turned negative after

That's sort of a show-stopper if you have some logs growing fast...

Being forced to purge a package in order to keep using logrotate should
even warrant raising the severity, imho.

Bug#291636: pidentd: patch for the load issue

Hi,

I managed to fix the issue. The original one I had on other(non-SMP)
machine that some java processes doesn't authenticate correctly, and
the problems arised when hammering a port(on a SMP machine; forgot to
mention explicitly, sorry).

The fix for the actual problem was already in 3.0.16-7 (assumably
written by Herbert Xu, basing on the patch made by Paul Szabo. See
#208290 for details), but didn't apply cleanly to the new
upstream version.

I rewrote/merged few parts that had problems applying cleanly. A patch
attached.

PS. As it seems (eg. according to #291180 ) there are few parts
missing from the previous debian diff. You might consider applying
them too. So, for convenience, also a cleanly applying patch
containing those missing parts not directly related to #291636 or
#291180 is also attached.

Bug#291636: pidentd: New version is DoS-able and doesn't work well on load

Hi,

the new version 3.0.18-1 has some problems when ran on machines having
enough network traffic.

First symptom that caused me to start looking was that sometimes java
processes don't get authenticated correctly (very annoying when used
with tomcat4 and ident authentication of postgresql).

One way to reproduce the problem:

-Run an irc server.
-Put a torture script running:
$ while [[ 1 ]]; do nc -z -v localhost 6667; done
-Wait a while (15-30 seconds).
-Try eg. indent-authenticate to postgresql server.


Expected result (and behaviour of 3.0.16-7 in the same test):
-Some system load
-Running 7 identd processes
-Some (one or two) zombies can be seen when repeatingly 
 run 'ps -fA | grep ident'.
-ident authentication works for other processes.

Actual result:
-Heavy system load. Some identd processes are running and eating all
 available cpu even after 5 minutes of actual port-hammering.
-More than 100 identd -processes.
-And the most important: authentication stops working.

gnome-desktop-environment, because debfoster asks only once per package
whether it should be kept or not. Leaning on my N key often deletes
other packages I wanted to keep...

Any chance of a simple curses frontend, I could simply browse up and
down and then submit when I think I'm ready?
