Hello everybody,

Does this mean that archives of mailing lists will be discontinued and
not be available any more? If not, could you please point out where we
still can find the archives after 15/03? Some Dutch mailing lists were
not archived by Gmane and I would not like to loose the information they

Many thanks

Hi, Leo,

AFAIK, yes, at least as far as availability at Oracle/Kenai is
concerned. The whole site is going away, lock, stock, and barrel.

You might check with markmail.org. They have been mentioned as archiving
some of the lists. I will inquire further on the Apache list, and post
any answer here.

[documentation-dev] OpenOffice.org lists are going away

2012-03-06 Thread TJ Frazier

To all my friends and colleagues on these documentation lists:

Effective March 15th, all OO.o email addresses and lists are going away.
That includes these two @documentation lists, of which I am a co-owner
and moderator.

If you are using an @openoffice.org address anywhere (wiki, Bugzilla,
Apache lists, forums, ...), then you need to change it there. The
current email forwarding will be discontinued.

The best way to keep up with documentation matters is through the
ODFAuthors site and ML's. The Apache podling does not yet have a
separate list for documentation; if and when it does, I will pass the
word on odfauthors-discuss.

Hail and farewell!

Can you suggest how I can fix this problem?

Hi,

First, you needn't worry about your "registered" username. Just pick one
you like, and register anew on forum(s) and/or mailing list(s). It's a
good idea to use the same name everywhere, so others know whom they're
conversing with. Unfortunately, there is no provision for a "universal
login"; each account is separate.

Second, the forums are addressable as they previously were, but with our
big move to Apache, the mailing lists have changed. For instance, this
particular list will be going away in the near future. You may wish to
subscribe to the following:

ooo-announce-subscr...@incubator.apache.org
ooo-users-subscr...@incubator.apache.org

1) Send an email, with "Subscribe" in the subject and in the body. (This
keeps your email from being caught in spam filters.)

2) Wait a few minutes and then check your inbox for a confirmation email.

3) Respond to the confirmation email (see above precautions).

(If you ever want to unsubscribe, send an email to:
ooo-announce-unsubscr...@incubator.apache.org (change the list name as
needed) and respond to the confirmation email.)

More information on this list, and other Apache OpenOffice project
lists can be found here:

HTH. Enjoy!

Hi, Elissa,

Sorry you're having download trouble; let me talk about that first.

When you click on the "I want to download" on the site's main page, you
should see an expansion (colored green) which states what version the
site thinks (it's really very clever) you should want. There's also
another link to "Looking for a different version?", just in case.

Clicking on the first link should do two things: (1) take you to a
"please donate" page (strictly optional!), and (2) start the download
automatically. (Under Firefox, I get a "What do you want to do with this
file?" message box. YMMV.) The last line on the page is a link that
should start the download manually, if the automation fails. It's about
180 MB, which takes about 4 minutes on my 10-Gbit cable service, with
the Ff "Down Them All" add-in (or 8 /hours/ on a 50-Kbit dial-up!).

If you see anything greatly different, please write back.

There may be service interruptions, as OO.o moves to its new home under
the Apache Software Foundation, on Apache servers.

Meanwhile, about documentation: Thank you for your interest in helping
with user documentation for OpenOffice.org.

Dear colleagues,

I have been writing and updating a User Guide for the Students an our

into English.

The English version is available at:

http://www.fb4.fh-frankfurt.de/tips/openoffice/dokumentation/ooo_for_students.pdf

The original document is also online:

http://www.fb4.fh-frankfurt.de/tips/openoffice/dokumentation/ooo_for_students.odt

I have been giving introductory courses in OpenOffice to all new
students of our department for Social Work at the University of Applied
Sciences in Frankfurt/Germany now for the past seven semesters - around
240 students per semester, divided into 12 groups. I only have 3 hours
per group, so I have to limit myself to the absolute essentials (styles,
table of contents, cross-references, page numbering etc.), but
especially those essentials students really need in their daily work. As
you can imagine, students of Social Work are not especially versed in
computers and it's all pretty new to them, especially in such a
condensed form. This introductory course addresses their needs as
closely as possible.

I think the course is now ripe enough to be distributed to a broader public.

I very much hope you find the time to have a look at it and to post the
course on the English speaking website of OpenOffice.org.

My next project is to translate it into French (just happen to have been
brought up in a bilingual family, no merit of mine).

Yours
David Paenson

Hi, David,

Thank you for your generous offer; it certainly sounds very useful.

Unfortunately, it is "moving day" (well, months and months) at OO.o,
while we build our new home at Apache. We are currently an "Incubator
podling" at the Apache Software Foundation.

I will take the liberty of forwarding yours and Jean's correspondence to

currently done. When we get the revised web site up (Real Soon Now), we
should be glad to post your links.

One of my strongest skills is English/writing, and I believe that I am

numerous opportunities to create or assist with user or technical
documentation. Also as the editor of a monthly church newsletter for
4-5 years I helped overhaul it from MS Word to MS Publisher format,
greatly facilitating the monthly production of the newsletter. I
consider it an enjoyable challenge to not only format documents in
eye-catching, yet easy-to-scan ways that lure people to read what I
wrote but to also read it as quickly and efficiently as possible.

I think technical writing may be right up my alley! Do you have

[documentation-dev] Using new {{Key}} template -- opinions requested

2010-07-17 Thread TJ Frazier

Hi, all,

IMHO, the output of the new {{Key}} wiki template[1] is light-years
ahead of our convention for representing key-strokes (Ctrl+Shift+..., in
text), in terms of instant reader comprehension, and for "pretty", too.
The question is, do enough contributors agree, that we are willing to do
the work to use it?

The template was contributed by our friends in the Russian-language
section. The documentation is (so far) only in Russian. But notice that
the function design is so elegant, and the documentation so well
structured, that it is easy enough to figure out how to use it, just by
"looking at the pictures".

The obvious target is the How-Tos and FAQs, where "instant
understanding" is at a premium, and we expect less-sophisticated users.

If we decide to use this in the "Guides" section, we will need to extend
the technology to Writer. This should be possible, since it is all done
by character formatting, and all the special characters are in the Deja
Vu fonts. Autotext? Macros? If the Writer entries are done in a uniform

The non-display of accented (>127, which includes eszett) characters is
a known problem in Opengrok:

 https://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=437

According to the notes on bug 437, substantial improvement has been made
as recently as 2010-03-30. The problem should go away, some day. If
anyone can figure whose cage to rattle, and the fixed version is
available, and someone will upgrade us to it, then the problem will go
away sooner.

Meanwhile, beware of Opengrok representation of any files containing
character codes greater than 127 (7F). They will be dropped from viewing.

in Firefox, but I doubt it.)

The string resources (and their localizations) are coded in UTF-8.

Sometimes Firefox autodetecion of the text encoding does not yield the
correct results. Everything should be fine when you select "View /
Character Encoding / Unicode (UTF-8)" in the menu of Firefox.

Thomas

Maybe everything should be fine after specifying UTF-8, but it's not.

The files themselves are fine, as verified by downloading and inspecting
them with Writer.

Neither Ff 3.6.6 nor IE 8.0 will properly display the file:

http://svn.services.openoffice.org/opengrok/xref/Current%20%28trunk%29/binfilter/bf_starmath/source/starmath_symbol.src

Both show all special characters omitted/deleted; even with Ff default
set to UTF-8, Ff wants to load this file as "Western (ISO 8859-1)" and
it is necessary to reset the UTF-8 setting (which causes a reload).
However, the reload also is missing the special characters. This is not
surprising, since the View > Page Source shows the strings are missing
the characters involved; something has eaten them.

I think Ff is not guilty. That leaves Windows Vista, or OpenGrok &
friends. Something about the site is explicitly telling Ff to use the
Western setting. I will raise the problem over on the web-dev ML.

If any browser on any o/s displays the above URL correctly for you, I
would love to hear about it.

a while to compose a note for the English version of the Math Guide /
Writer Guide (unless someone beats me to it) to the effect that these
symbols (Greek and Special) may be localized, but the file itself will
be coded in a universal format.

Nowadays the localization to those (and any other string resource) can
be found in the project l10n. There is a sub directory for each locle,
and in that one there is a single huge filed named localize.sdf.

Thus if you want to check on the German localization of the symbol names
in Math you have to load the file
 l10n\source\de\localize.sdf
And in that you need to locate the define from the symbol.src, that is
the RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES. There is one entry with that define for every
en-US entry listed in symbols.src:

starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 1 0 de alpha
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 2 0 de ALPHA
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 3 0 de beta
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 4 0 de BETA
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 5 0 de gamma
...
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 5 0 de mu
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 5 0 de MU
...

The order of course is the same as in symbol.src.

Thomas

Thank you for the extra effort. I can see how busy you are with 3.3,
from the feature announcements.

Opengrok was able to find symbol.src (current trunk, no German),
binfilter/symbol.src (with German), and the de/localize.sdf (huge)
files. I used those to make the changes. You can see the results in the
last two sections on the wiki page:

The exact case as in symbol.src in RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES is required.

Also translation of those symbol names must follow a specific syntax
otherwise the result in the formula editor may not work.
The required naming scheme for those symbols is:

1) They must start with an alphabetic character
2) The following characters may be alphanumeric or a '.' (ASCII period)

This especially allows for
   - Alpha2
   - alpha.small, alpha.large, less.equal
   - use of non-western characters like Russioan, Greek, Japanese, ...
and it implicitly disallows
   - names containing white spaces
   - more than one word (those should be written as e.g.
 AbcDefg or abc.defg, ...)
   - the use of the _ character
(that one is used as subscript symbol after all)

Minor correction about the English names used in the ODF file format:
The names used there (which a normal user will never see) are those
defined in RID_EXPORT_SYMBOL_NAMES in symbol.src (which just happen to
be the same as the en-US UI names listed in RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES).

Thanks much for the confirmation. Yes, we will have to change the
guide, but we don't know what to say, yet. Either we need a caution
in the German version that there is an error, or a note in all
languages that these keywords may be localized.

IMHO, for the Guides it does not play a role why something is
implemented.

I suggest that it is important for the Guides to warn that their
instructions may not apply to the user's particular version, and
especially important to warn of changes to come (such as fixing an
error). This means that the Guide writers have to do the homework, so
that thousands of users don't have to.

I think the next step is to ask the localization folks whether this
is deliberate or accidental. If you know how to do that, please do;
otherwise, Nino will know. --/tj/

Thanks for your optimism ;-)

There are 3 obstacles:
I've got no working OOo3 installation ATM,
2nd, I've never been using Math and
3rd, my time is presently very very limited.

I can really sympathize with that... :-(

So maybe anybody else takes the lead, if not it has to wait (and might
be worth an issue)

Warm regards,
Nino

have a mechanism which - say - automatically updates existing
"official" wikibooks each time one of the underlying documents is
changed, e.g. on a daily basis. Maybe it's doable with a
script/bot/cronjob already?

How would this work?

I've pondered this one quite a lot, wishing it could be totally
automated, and I haven't been able to come up with anything reliable or
practical that could manage the whole process.

The closest I've come to an idea for automating that would have a chance
to work is to parse the maintained TOC file, and convert it into a Book
file.

The TOC file is a known and maintained part of any Wiki Book. The
syntax of both the TOC file and the Book file are known... and in theory
the TOC could be converted into a book via an external transform.

Simple Pseudocode:
   - Use the MW API to extract the XML for a given TOC
   - Parse the TOC XML and convert/transform it to Book XML
   - Use API to upload the Book XML

The transform is the challenge... it can be done using... Ant/XSLT/Saxon
for example.

C.
Something like that should work for creating books automagically, but it
may need something more to keep them up-to-date. Would some process need
to check the revision date on each page?

On a slightly lighter note, which you might find hillarious - I
certainly did and I'm sure anyone else in the UK would find it equally
funny. They wanted me to get a form signed by OOo to say that I was a

getting paid so that it doesn't affect your benefits while you're

the person that would need to sign it was probably on the other side of

dragged into the 21st century and account for people using the internet.

Hm, are they fine with an e-mail or a fax? I don't know you very well,
so I can't write anything, but if someone asks me for a reference, and I
know him from my work within OOo, I'm happy to write a few lines.
However, of course, no official organization stands behind that, so I
don't know if they would accept it.

This sounds like something the Council might want to handle, with a
boilerplate letter, (assuming I have the facts straight) something like:

Subject: Unpaid volunteers

OO.o employs and pays no one. The few people who do get paid for their
work here are employed by sponsoring companies, such as Oracle; those
companies generously donate their employees' time to OO.o. All others
are purely unpaid volunteers.

I corrected the grammar and some of the wording as you suggested but
as you can appreciate, as it has been some years since I documented
anything at API level, I may have used the wrong wording in some
places. For example I have used the term "variable" which might not
make sense in the context that it has been used.

If someone can take a look at this page at some point and give me some
feedback, I'd be appreciative.

Kind regards

Claire

I looked at all your changes. You've really cleared out the underbrush;
it's a big, big improvement.

To answer your specific question, "Object" and "Any" are /types/ so
"type" might be clearer than "variable".

The big problem I see with this humongous page is that it should be
broken into about five smaller ones, as a look at the TOC itself
suggests. Maybe Intro + link farm + "See also" as the opening page, plus
pages for "finding and inside a cell" (big page, here), "Cell Ranges",
DevGuide translation, "Listeners", and "Graphics". I am putting this out
for feedback; maybe somebody has objections, or a better idea.

Technical problem: I strongly suspect that those references to "SDK 1.1"
should read something like, "SDK 3.2" now. However, I am totally
unfamiliar with the Software Development Kit, as of yet.

Wiki tech: this page makes no use of the ... feature, for
marking embedded words and phrases of code. (As a user, I find it very
helpful. It also eliminates some quotation marks.) Because the editor is
not equipped with the suitable button, I find it easier to copy the wiki
text to a Writer document, where I have written the proper macro to
handle the bracketing of a selected piece of text. I will do that, after
the "breakup" question is decided; no rush.

Again, thanks for the good work!
