[l10n-dev] Resigning from the L10n FR coordinator role

2010-10-29 Thread Sophie

Hi all,

I'm resigning from my role of FR coordinator for the French language. I
was doing the work alone and didn't find anybody to replace me yet.
I'm leaving the project but if I can be of any help for a new comer,
just let me know by sending a private mail (I'll unsubscribe soon from
all OOo lists), and I'm also reachable on the l10n list of LibO project.

OOo 3.3 will be the last version for which I'm participating to QA too.

I've been very happy to work here, I've learned a lot from all of you so
I'm really thankful to this project, to Rafaella, Frank and Ivo! I've
had great time with you all and I hope we will meet some days again :)

Kind regards
Sophie

cannot run such check.

You can do this check using Pootle functionnalities.
Anyway, shouldn't this log always be provided before each language
build? That would be useful.

If you get the .sdf, you can run gsicheck on it.

By the was, the log is for Help. Is the one for UI available?
If you look at the log, most or the errors pointed are because of
closing tags missing or missmatch betweens tag in the source and target
language. These tags are not present in UI, only in HC2, so there should
be nor errors in the UI.

[l10n-dev] [Fwd: [lingu-dev] Call for OOo 3.3 dictionary updates]

2010-09-15 Thread Sophie

Hi all,

I'm forwarding the mail from Thomas here because some of you working on

--- Begin Message ---

Hi all,

To all who' like to provide an update to an existing dictionary
extension: please prepare the extension update and file an issue with a
download link to the updated extension. Best would be if this could be
done until Tuesday next week.

Notes:

1) If you want to support ligatures with your extension then please read
the short thread named 'spell check dictionaries and ligatures'. Namely
please note that the dictionary needs to be converted to UTF-8 encoding
in order for the solution with ICONV to work.

2) Reminder: Since OOo 3.2 the simple Ascii dash/minus '-' is reagarded
as part of the word for spell checking purposes. Before OOo 3.2 the
dictionaries needed to add the left and right part of such a word/text
as separate entries in order to not get the word (or better part of it)
to be marked as incorrect. Since OOo 3.2 you can clean up the dictionary
by omitting the partial words and only listing the full words, thus
getting rid of 'not real word' entries in the dictionary that often may
result in odd or even misspelled suggestions from the spell checker if
similar text patterns get encountered.

For example: previoulsy you would have needed 'U' + 'turn' and 'X' +
'ray' whereas you can now simply use 'U-turn' and 'X-Ray'.

Though this type of problem is probably more eminent in other languages
than English. ;-)

Regards,
Thomas

I want to be doing other approaches additionally.
And, I am examining whether TCS can be used in JA-QA.

question:

1. How is TCS used in QA project?
I think that the granularity of the test case is detailed of TCS compared with TCM.
Do you use it to test to the new features included?

Yes, mostly on new features to understand what they are doing (the
samples are of great help here) and to see where is the localization in
the UI

2. At which stage do you test by the test case of TCS?
   DEV-Build?

on dev builds to confirm cws and on RC to check that it works well with
the localization

3. Who is doing the test using the test case of TCS?

you mean who are writing them ? The are written by the QA resp of the
cws containing the features.

4. Is there native-lang project for which the test case of TCS is used?

for FR project, but not on a formal way. We encourage the members to use
them to discover the new funtionalities and check for bugs, but the fact
that they are in English do not engage our members to use them.

5. Who assumes the responsibility of making the test case of TCS?
And, is the test case maintained?

A cws can't be approve by the QA resp if the corresponding tests are
failing. The same way the QA resp (or the owner of the tests -which is
quite the same actually) maintain the test case.

6. May I make a test case on TCS?
May I make a global test case?
May I make a local test case (e.g. for a Japanese project)?

you mean write them ?

This is a recurring problem : developers should think that en_US is not

This string is located in the openoffice/accessibility/source/helper.po.

With the integration CWS slidecopy, a feature became available for
extensions to register arbitrary tool panels, to be displayed in a
per-application Task Pane (see
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Framework/Article/Tool_Panels
for a small documentation, and a Soylent Green screenshot :) ).

Those tool panels are organized in a tool panel deck, which basically is
what you know from Impress' Task Pane in current versions. One possible
layout for this tool panel deck is the "drawers", as shown in the
screenshot at the above side, and as known from Impress' Task Pane.

Another possible layout, which currently is not finalized, and thus not
available in the DEV300 builds, is a "tabbed" layout, where some kind of
tab bar (like in tabbed dialogs) is shown at the right/left hand side of
the tool panel deck, with one tab item per tool panel.

And "Panel Deck Tab Bar" is the Accessibility name for this thing.

Thanks a lot for your explanations, I think it's clear for all of us now :)

and StarOffice glossaries contained in SunGloss have been imported
into OpenCTI and are to be found under the Terminology Tab.
When you search a word, you can see to which category it belongs by
clicking on it (Product: OfficeSuites:StarOffice).
But it is true that there is no OpenOffice project appearing in the
OpenCTI project explorer, which may be confusing at first sight and
which could indeed ease the search.

It is also true that the OpenOffice terminology hasn't been updated
for a while and it should be done before some valuable Community work
gets lost.
So, regarding terminology management and updates, it would be very
useful for the Community to be able to import new terms lists into
OpenCTI database. And I would be happy to help the Community, but I'm
sorry, I don't know myself how to proceed...

Thank you Elsa for this information. I'm sure we will find a solution to
update our glossaries once we know which tool we can use :-)

@Rafaella: do you know if it's already possible to export and import
standard formats like TBX in OpenCTI?
no, unfortunately I don't know. The information I could gather since
yesterday are:

- All SunGloss content has been migrated to OpenCTI
- All SunGoss logins are no more valid and have not been migrated
- Terms can be looked up without account
- To update/add terms you need an account (need to register first)

Thanks a lot also Rafaella. Don't hesitate to tell me if I can be of any
help.

Kind regards
Sophie

ok, I feel that we are still the poor parent of the project...
not sure if I understand this comment. Has OpenCTI all what you are
looking for for terminology management?

That was a more general comment on the tools we are using or the lack of.
TCM is not maintained any more but we are more and more to use it and we
have no alternative whatever the wish list we draw, SunGloss is not
maintained any more, we have more and more languages and there is no
alternative. After two years of continuous errors and failures (and
mails ;) we might have in several weeks, a new machine (but not for 3.3
if I understand well) to host Pootle. So when I consider the work we
will have in the next weeks, I'm not so happy and I feel I should battle
more for this project :-)

I was speaking of OpenICT because it was said that we may use it. But if
it's another tool, no problem for me. All I want is to push to have an
alternative to SunGloss without loosing the work already done.
I would like to know if it's a budget issue or a technical issue or
anything else. May be I can help to find money or the right tool or may
be it already exists and need to be further developed. And it's exactly
the same for TCS.

If yes, do you have a time frame of when it'll be done? I would like
to maintain the French glossary and I have already several terms to
add from the former versions.
You are raising a very good topic - terminology management for OOo. I
think that this is a good time to start gathering the requirements. What
would you expect from a terminology tool? What are the key functions? Is
this something that is already covered by the Pootle Terminology
function? Is this something that can be set up in the OOo wiki system?

Back in October, I begin a wish list based on the feedback provided by
the community members after my first mail on this, here it is:

- easily manage export and import of standard formats (TBX), to allow to
work offline

- accessible and open source
- the ability to add comments to a word and the source of it (as in
SunGloss), to add links to other sources

- the ability to search in several languages (as in SunGloss)
- a date and history of the word entry
- a seamless integration with translation tools

Are you sure all

The funny thing is that in French, soylent is translated as sun. But I

I mean, I have my own ideas and will make a translation that has no

And have fun with it. But is this really the way to go?

No, we should inform the owner of the function that the string are not

Hello,

I wrote some time ago about this but nothing changed, so I will reiterate.
Localization of Oracle (was: Sun) extensions is part of OpenOffice.org
localization and we, the localizers, have localized them. Fully. But - the
official builds available from the Extensions site do not contain
localizations! Where can I get builds with Slovenian localization of PDF
Importer or others? True, Pavel does provide unofficial builds, but they are
not available for Windows.

So, will localizations finally be included or not? If not, the extensions
localization strings should be removed from the localization process. But
that is not what the native lang communities want - we want extensions in
our languages! I do not know how to push this thing so it starts to move.
Any ideas?

Thanks, m.

ru, ar, ja, zh, zh_tw, ko. Once the translation are ready will be
made available in Pootle.

What exactly does this mean? Will Sun translate the new / changes
strings,

so that community will have nothing to do (but to check if all is ok)?

yes, that's correct.
Rafaella

I'm not very happy with this process. As a contributor of the FR
language, I would have appreciate to be asked if I can participate to
that translation round or not. Even if I understand that it's to help
the release to be in time, it's not good to bypass the contributors and
only some of them.
This is the deadline that should be adapted to the process, not our
participation and again, only to take care of few languages, what for
the others ? If the translation is not approved by the FR team, the
version won't be approved anyway.
So I would like to make sure that we are able to check for the strings
in Pootle and if not, I'm able to provide a translation by Sunday
evening. Also, we have provided several fixes in Pootle, will they be
integrated ?

would be your preferred platform for doing this ?

Martin

Hi Martin:

Perhaps somebody from the l10n project can give better technical
background about the workflow on translation and why the process
doesn't admit changes after the localisation CWS has been integrated.
This is something we are aiming to change. See all my posts in the past
requesting feedback and support for a better and easier workflow.
We have been working with Pootle, open language tools, and gsicheck
and, personally, I consider that string translation changes are of the
safest changes that can be introduced (provided that they are checked
and sanitized) without breaking builds or causing problems. And even
when we considered some translation errors as show-stoppers, their
corrections weren't accepted in RC stage, and were delayed to next
bugfix release.
That was after the RC3, so it's very late in the release process. May be
a warning during the RC1 would have left more time.

As I said, we have been doing our own builds, patching the
translations with the latest snapshot from Pootle, converted to OOo
SDF format using po2oo, and gsichecking the resulting file. All of it
can be done automatically, but I see two problems to solve for the "as
early as possible" scenario:

1. Pootle updates are done only after UI and string freeze. Then these
new or modified strings are available for a few weeks to be
translated, before localisation CWS integration, and after that,
usually a two week period to introduce changes before first RC.
Ideally, new or modified strings should be inmediately available on
Pootle to alleviate the translation burden when too many strings were
introduced/modified. Also, I think translation updates must be
accepted in-between RC's when NL project leaders ask to do so, and
next RC built with the last snapshot from Pootle.
This is an ideal world we would be pleased to reach I imagine, but see
the archive of this list, this is not currently possible.

2. Weekly devel builds should be done with the complete set of
language packs, and not only a few of them as it is done currently (I
think they are FR, DE, IT, JA, pt-BR, etc.) as it will give us the
opportunity to check our advance (provided that we have early the
strings to translate on Pootle as I said before).
As Andre explained, this is not for localization purpose, this gives no
advantages over the localization process but may raise i18n issues
earlier if they happen, for the QA process in general.

Regardless of that, on our community we have a specific problem with
our translation: it has a poor overall quality, and this review
process I described on my previous e-mail must be carried out outside
the current translations on Pootle, because if we did otherwise, we
can get as a result a more confusing translation on the next upcoming
releases. So, we still need a local box to do our own builds to test
the revision process until it gets to an acceptable degree of quality
to merge the changes back to Pootle.
Why didn't you react when we had the build including localization to
test in November and before the RC3? An alert here could have help to
review the workflow or dedicate a specific effort to your language.

I don't think that funding one community will help to enhance our process.
I think each NL project had hard time to follow the process because of a
lot of strings, a shorter period to translate them, errors in the files
and a module that was integrated and should not be translated.
Of course we should be able to build our own cws when we feel that we
need to check the work done. But this may be coordinated also to save
resources and let the rest of the group be aware of the progress. We
need to work as a team here with the developer team and the release team.

Kind regards
Sophie

[l10n-dev] Localizations of the site not accessible

There is an issue with the website and localization, it seems that all
localizations but German are gone.

If I log out, only German and English are available. Other l10n teams

Re: [l10n-dev] QA process for l10n builds

Hi Sveinn í Felli,
Sveinn í Felli wrote:

Hi,
Just curious; entering QATrack, would that be doable/useful
for a language which has not yet reached 80% translated UI ?

QATrack is a tool that aims to track the status of the tested builds to
allow the QA team (mainly Joost) to distribute the approved builds on
the mirror network. It allows also to trace the link of the tested build
(rejected, approved or untested and so on).

For example; Icelandic is now up to 68% UI translated, it
will take some time before getting to the 80% mark. It was
included in langpack creation
<http://ooo.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/cws/upload/localization/localization37fix/>,
but at that moment we were at 51%. We also roll our own
(full-install) packages (OOo-3.2.0m6), and so far without
any problems (except one small Ubuntu-related one).
So, I was just vondering when we should initiate the
QA-procedures.

You can do QA on your lang pack at any time, it's always good to make
some tests :) For my point of view, doing QA, you do not only test your
localization, but also the quality of the suite and helps to find bug
before the final release. But for this you do not need to register to
QATrack, TCM would be better as it allows to trace which tests have been
done by whom and the issue the tester encountered (some remarks can be
added to the test result).

Another consideration that might be interesting for some communities is
that QA help to build a community. The tests are not difficult, testers
may learn about the new functionalities or some areas they are not used
with the suite and finally they can help by improving localization, or
documentation/FAQ in your language. For the FR localization of 3.2 for
example, I didn't have any body to check for the localization I've done.
But because we have had several people to install and check for the
overall functionalities for QA, I've had a good feedback on the
localization and have been able to correct several typos in a good
timeframe.

We are hoping to use pootle to debug the most possible before RC2 and

[l10n-dev] QA process for l10n builds

2009-12-28 Thread Sophie

Hi all,

With some delay, here is a reminder for all of you who want to test l10n
builds.

* Builds to test appear in QATrack and NL project leads are
notified by e-mail and RSS. If you wish to test a build which has not
appeared on QATrack yet, send a request to the d...@qa.openoffice.org
mailing list.
* The lead of the NL project registers users (testers) in the TCM
and assigns them various test scenarios. (At least the "Release Sanity"
scenario should be assigned once per platform).

* The testers make the tests, and enter the results in the TCM.
* The lead enters the status of the testing to the QATrack
* After the tests have been done, you update the status page and
file an issue in IssueZilla, stating that the build is ready for
distribution. Use this link as template.
* Then you update your project page to announce the availability of
your localized builds :)

Note: for all builds (RC1, RC2, RCN) the tests are the same in TCM.
Simply update the status of bugs in the current release.

In case full TCM tests are not possible because of lack of time or
testers, you can follow the easier path with Sanity Check Of L10n Builds
[1]. You can skip then all TCM-related steps. Remember, though: the more
tests, the less bugs in the software. But don't forget to file an issue
stating that the build is available and the link to the build.

All the links and indications are available on the wiki page [2]
Don't hesitate if you have any question.

Kind regards
Sophie

2009-11-13 Thread Sophie

Hi all,

In Impress/Draw under View, their is [Comme~nts] that is still appearing
in English in the FR version.
It is translated in the
openoffice_org/officecg/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/UI
#:
DrawImpressCommands.xcu#..DrawImpressCommands.UserInterface.Popups..uno_ShowAnnotation.Label.value.text

msgid "Comme~nts"
msgstr "Comm~entaires"

Am I the only one who have this string in English?
Thanks in advance

Kind regards

If it can/could be localized, will the strings be included in the sdf file
on the road to 3.3? That would be great, right?

Yes and we should really try to get a process for extension localization.

Also, could there be a way to localize the Professional Template Packs I &
II from Sun via the main OOo sdf file?
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/SunTemplatepack_1
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/TemplatePack_II
These templates are only available in some languages, only provided by Sun.
If there is no plans to include them in sdf or promote their localization in
all OOo languages, are localization teams allowed to localize them by hand
and then release them to the public on their own?

For French, I've asked Volker Ahrendt to send me the files and have
translated them manually as several parts (language for styles,
properties, etc) have to be done manually. I still have several Calc
templates to translate.

Rafaella, would it be possible to have the file containing all the
templates on ooo.services.openoffice.org server, as the licence (BSD if
I remember well) allow us to translate them ?

We will have a build on the 3rd of November. There will be a testing
period between 3rd of November to 19th of November, where you will have
the time to check your translation using the TCM if you wish and provide
a new .sdf file containing only your corrections.
Then, after the last date, you won't be able to provide corrections and
see them on 3.2 release, this will be the release candidate time. And
the time for QA testing :) But we are not there, one step after another ;)

You mean the name of the extension in the dialog. From here, it seems
possible to have a description in your language since 3.0

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/resources

For FR spell checker for example, the name and description of the
extension is in French. So it might depend of what the extension author
has added in the description. From what I understand (but I may be
wrong, I don't know how to make extension) it is possible to have
localized data, see here

Having a download page for all localized OpenOffice.org language packs where two different categories, one
for "supported & tested" versions of language packs and another for "beta & untested
though translated" versions of language packs, listed would solve the matter I believe.

+1

I would add three columns in the second table of downloads/category:
a) percentage or color representation of percentage localized (UI, help),
b) test status (non-tested, not-tested-enough, errors, no-QA-team etc.) and
c) other comments (like: without thesaurus etc.),
so that users know why this package might not be "supported & tested"
and decide if they want to try it or not. This can be done very
graphically (at least first two comments) so it does not look too
bulky and technical.

So the help file now contains this link :
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Download_OpenOffice.org_LanguagePacks
which has a link to the l10n/languages page, not sure this is very
useful for users and a link to the tested packs per platform.
Instead of this, may be we should draw the table suggested by Martin and
add it on this page http://download.openoffice.org/langpack.html

The purpose of QA is a different topic. Whether your version should be
tested or not is your responsibility only as said Mechtilde.
We have found several issues making those tests, not related to wrong
strings but with extension integration, or with installation for
example. But at the end, this is you who decide what you want to deliver
to your users.

Take swedish (sv) or spanish (es) languages :
- There is no full package available for 3.1.1, only version 3.1.0.
- The langpacks for 3.1.1 have not been released.
- But langpacks are available as 3.1.1RC2. So power users can install
OOo 3.1.1 in these languages, and be happy.

Take italian (it) language :
- Full packages are released for 3.1.1
- Langpacks for 3.1.1 are *not* released.
- But langpacks are available as 3.1.1RC2.
I don't understand why the full package is released but not the langpack.

I don't understand why a langpack in RC2 stays unreleased.
RC2 means that it seems good enough for public tests. If there are
some strings not yet translated, or badly translated, this does not
prevent from using OpenOffice.org as a whole. If a user does not
master one of the published languages, it is better than nothing. And
then users of this language will find and report residual errors.
This is not a matter of strings not translated, but of the stability of
the version as Joost mentioned.

Releasing or not releasing as stable has always been a difficult choice.
User that faces a not fully functional version or version that crashes
may never come back to OOo, however if you don't release the version,
you will miss testers and their feedback.

We have already seen language specific bugs and for that have decided
that a version or language pack that is not tested should not become
public. OOo has a QA process even for localized version, this what we
have agreed on several times ago.

I've offered my help to each l10n team to help them in this process, it
is still valid my time is still dedicated to these teams because it will
give more visibility to their versions if they are on the main network,
but also, and more important to my eyes, to their teams and the work
they have done.

[l10n-dev] Glossary: summary of your feedback and wishes

2009-10-11 Thread Sophie

Hi all,

Here comes the summary of your feedback, and some wishes added by all of
you (including me ;)

Currently few of us use SunGloss for their glossaries but it has some
drawbacks for the community, even if it's a very useful tool when completed.

Some issues mentioned by Andre
- we cannot directly edit / update
- there is no direct integration in translation tools
- export from SunGloss is a somewhat complex procedure
- you cannot export to standard formats (like TMX)

Some communities do not use glossary but rely on TM or on terminology
feature on Pootle.

The German community is working with a company that will help them to
establish a glossary.

Friedel highlighted the possibilities offered by Pootle through
terminology files.

Concerning the terminology files, I'm reluctant to add more things to
our Pootle servers because of their instability and slowness. Also, I
may be wrong but I've seen that it is not possible to add context to the
word.

I begin a wish list from your feedback for a tool that allow us to:
- easily manage export and import of standard formats, to allow to work
offline

- accessible and open source
- the ability to add comments to a word and the source of it (as in
SunGloss), to add links to other sources

- the ability to search in several languages (as in SunGloss)
- an history of the word entry
- a seamless integration with translation tools

Please add your own comments and wishes this will help to specifies our
needs and may be we will be able to get this tool ;)

Sophie
