Re: [External] : Re: Plugin Verifikation Plugins Portal (changing rules)

2024-07-12 Thread Jiří Kovalský
Since there has been no further communication on this topic, let's take
this as a lazy consensus that signatures won't be considered at all when
verifying plugins going forward. I have updated step 8 in the "Install
plugin" Synergy test accordingly:

Anyone please speak up if you disagree.

Yes, anything that was previously verified should be allowed through
unless it's actually broken. We have a limited RC window for people
to test with plugins as it is. Making plugin authors jump through
unnecessary hoops doesn't help there.

The requirement to sign the plugins is questionable in itself without a
trust anchor or revocation list, but I can live with with requiring
signature for updates (this will become fun, once the signature
expires, but ...)

Agreed! And we have SHA in the catalog which I assume are checked?!

As you've raised this before, I would suggest you just kick off a lazy
consensus thread on removing the self-sign requirement. Or on the
validation rules as a whole.

Re: [External] : No communication from plugin portal verifiers (do we need to drop plugin portal?)

2023-02-17 Thread Jiří Kovalský

Hi Matthias,

first of all sorry for not reacting to your question sooner but I
was busy lately so I didn't check the list and the direct message for
some reason didn't end up in the Inbox too. :(

Anyway, I can give the context here. :) About two months ago Mani
(Cc:ed here) joined the team of plugin verifiers as a new volunteer and
during the introductory call with him we talked about whether plugins
should be signed. As per the Plugin Verification specification [1] the
installation instructions only mention:

1.8 If validation warning about self-signed certificate is displayed,
accept it by clicking Continue button.

[1]
https://synergy.netbeans.apache.org/#/title/verification_of_apache_netbeans_plugin/

It says nothing about not signed plugins but we came to the conclusion
that if self-signed plugins are explicitly tolerated then not-signed one
should not.

However, if you and Neil think that the signature check should be
excluded completely and NetBeans community supports it, let's remove it.
And even more if the whole verification process is seen as useless then
let's have an official community voting and then get rid of it!

As an immediate fix I have changed my NoGo to Go for all your 3 plugins
and hereby ask Carlos/Geertjan/Mani to do the same if they agree.

Hope this helps,

Re: [External] : verification of plugin with update center

2023-01-24 Thread Jiří Kovalský
Just to clarify, this has been addressed and resolved to Ernie's
satisfaction.

As a general rule, if a plugin installs its own update center, which is
then not removed when such a plugin is uninstalled, this is not a reason
for the plugin to be rejected due to the issue that Ernie referred to.

"update center not removed" has been a problem for over 10 years. My
understanding has been that it's a NetBeans bug. Maybe I'm wrong. In May
of 2011 I filed

https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://bz.apache.org/netbeans/show_bug.cgi?id=198359__;!!ACWV5N9M2RV99hQ!Lzbr9TtCStVXSFYXKO-S_uYdzpL8wJebPg5eSjI8zCBoJTUTGxDKk5xa1kvv5hw5lWtGuIr98qkVpUAfmb0$    removed UC can not be added (re-added) by installing a module

I thought I filed a follow on issue specifically about the update center
not getting removed when uninstalled, but don't find it.

There's some indication in the report that there's no API for cleaning
NetBeans state to remove an update center. And I believe that there's an
issue that the module can be uninstalled without getting notification.
But I don't remember the details. I remember trying a variety of things,
never got it to work.

If someone could provide some hints and/or API pointers, I'll take a
look at fixing it.

In the meantime, is it possible to get the plugin approved while the
problem is being addressed?

The version is : RELEASE160

Voting Requirements

Before voting +1 you are required to download the signed source code
package, compile it as provided, and test the resulting executable on
your own platform, along with also verifying that the package meets
the requirements of the ASF policy on releases -
https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.apache.org/legal/release-policy.html*management__;Iw!!ACWV5N9M2RV99hQ!J4uo7OSTxMwIWAefYvkgEODe7JuHrcX5Jcr-qJsfKl7A0RpzihJNvlSU3PMErWyFNzsNYX10kN8s9KPqxNrwLNr6$

In particular, you should (at least) follow these steps.

1. Download the artefact to be voted on and unzip it.
2. Check that the artefact does not contain any jar files (there are
branding folders with the name *.jar).
3. Verify the cryptographic signatures, the NOTICE and LICENSE file
4. Build it using the README provided by the artefact.
5. Look in nbbuild/netbeans for the NetBeans installation created by
the build process and try running it.

In addition to checking the sources, you should check the associated
convenience binary zips, nbms and maven staging at the artefact links
above. As well as checking any artefact functions correctly, you
should check that it has been correctly signed by a PMC member, and
that the source being voted on is sufficient to build the relevant
binary.

Separate votes will be held on other convenience binaries, including
installers. Those will be dependent on this vote passing.

This vote is going to be open at least 72 hours, vote with +1, 0, and
-1 as usual. (Please justify -1)

Please mark your vote with (binding) only if you're an Apache NetBeans
PMC member to help with voting admin.

Only respond if you are going to vote, i.e., this is NOT a discussion thread.

Apache NetBeans 16 will be released if and when this vote passes.

Thank you to all contributors for all your hard work!

Best wishes,

Yes.  Using the previous release as the baseline set is far from a new
suggestion though,
well this was only a part what i was suggesting, it was supposed to be a
one time event linked to a notification mail.

however, thinking about this a bit more:

it is probably better to send the notification mail after the new plugin
portal changes are in. Since there is not really an advantage to create
that baseline earlier. So that all still-maintained plugins can request
the verification under the new model.

This would hopefully also pick up some of the 12.0-verified plugins
which disappeared from the plugin manager some time ago - assuming the
maintainers read the mail and press the button :)

-mbien

Sorry for coming late to this discussion.

Anyway, I very much like the idea of notification button which would
give owners of plugins supporting already released version 14 a chance
to quickly double check that their plugins work in version 15 and then
request official verification in that upcoming version. Maybe we could
send the notification around the time when 15 RC1 voting opens?

BTW, I have already created version 15 in the Plugin Portal so that
owners can start requesting the verifications.

However, I am not not much in favor of getting rid of plugin
verifications completely. As Yarda pointed out we often see issues with
JDK such as these and I for one consider the manual verifications useful:

https://github.com/moacirrf/nb-java-decompiler/issues/32
https://github.com/ranSprd/netbeans-pojomaker/issues/1

We had this discussion fairly recently with regards to releases and
the number of private conversations we'd been having. We also

No, it is not but it is absolutely easy if you get admin access to the
Plugin Portal.

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/NetBeans+Plugin+Portal+Administration

Do we really want / need all plugins to be verified every 3 months?

It depends whether we favor plugin users or plugin developers.

Yes, in the former case and no in the latter case.

That documentation is for the distribution update centre, not plugins.

You can put in a PR to change the .htaccess at

any time you're ready. No need to wait for release here IMO. In
fact, we should consider 14 being done soon too, and definitely in

We can probably move to have a blanket redirect soon, ie. Redirect 302

If we introduce something generic which won't require periodic update of
the .htaccess file it would be great!

OK, I have registered new version 13 in the Plugin Portal and created
its accompanying update center catalog:

[1] https://netbeans-vm1.apache.org/pluginportal/data/13/catalog.xml.gz

It is empty now but from this moment all plugin owners can request
verifications of their plugins in Apache NetBeans 13 which will populate
the catalog soon.

Fantastic! I'm happy to join a chat--it would be good to include anyone else on

For actual decision-making, discussions should happen on the email list, so

Heads-up: netbeans.org EOL on March 6th

2021-02-23 Thread Jiří Kovalský

Hello NetBeans community,

I knew this day would come but I didn't expect it would be me
announcing with mixed feelings that the netbeans.org domain will reach
its end of life on 6th of March, 2021. March 6th is the date when Oracle
hosting of the Hg repositories, website, BugZilla, Wiki, Plugin Portal
and many other services will be turned off followed by complete
decommissioning of the infrastructure.

So, if anyone still wants to download some old binary such as

historic screenshots [3], backup favorite FAQs [4] or clone some of the
repositories [5], the right time has come.

Re: Bypassing NetBeans Plugin Portal

2020-07-07 Thread Jiří Kovalský
I agree that we should only promote hosting of plugins on the official
Apache NetBeans Plugin Portal. If there are reasons why plugin
developers think of creating their own update centers, then let's rather
collect the reasons and try to resolve these in order to avoid these
shadow and potentially risky sources of NetBeans plugins.

For example:

* if the mandatory Quality Criteria for PPUC [1] are missing some
security checks, then let's add them to the procedure.

[1]
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/Quality+criteria+for+Plugin+Portal+Update+Center

* if verification of plugins is slow, let's agree on some allowed number
of verification requests per month/plugin and reasonable reaction time
for plugin verifiers.

* if plugin verifiers are still overloaded, let's find more volunteers
who will test plugins on a daily basis starting with the requestor
him/herself.

Hope this makes sense,

-Jirka

Hi.
Recently I have noticed discussion explaining how to bypass NetBeans
Plugin Portal. The
usual way is to create a NetBeans module extension to provide own
update center
definition and register it in NetBeans Plugin Portal. Once a user
downloads such module,
the provided update center gets activated and can distribute new
updates or new

modules.

Isn't this a security thread? Shouldn't we ban modules that register
own update centers?

When we worked on designing the new update center based on Maven
central repository,
I wanted to benefit from the organizational structure of Maven
repository:

- identity of people who publish there is known to some extent
- it is not possible to alter once published content
- there are sources next to each published module

With such constraints we can more properly verify what 3rd party
NetBeans extensions do

before we approve them..

I can think of ways, easy ways, to put security violations into a module
on the plugin portal. Saying that installing a module, and looking at it
for a few minutes (if that long) mitigates security threats from the
module is a joke. Might the testing/validation be more extensive than I
suspect?

With modules that bypass our Plugin Portal by installing their
own catalog, we loose any control. Owners of such catalogs can publish
anything, anytime

to anyone

That's not true. Only the people who install that plugin are susceptible
to malfeasance.

and change that whenever they want. It's just a matter of time till
somebody

exploits that.

Shouldn't we require 3rd party modules available via the default
NetBeans Update center
to avoid such bypassing and always release new versions via Maven
Central and NetBeans

Plugin Portal?

How about only supporting update centers that download from maven
central? Since using Maven Central seems to be the primary method of
security, this would seem to satisfy security considerations and still
allow timely updates.

And are there related RCP issues?

-ernie

PS.

Eric, hats off for your endurance, can-do approach and optimism. Without
you we would be still stabilizing 12.0. I can imagine how exhausting it
must have been sometimes but you didn't give up and pushed the release
forward maybe even sacrificing your private life.

Please take some time off now and celebrate!

Huge thanks to Neil, Matthias and Antonio whose help with the release

Big appreciation goes also to all unnamed developers [1] who have
contributed the new features or improvements and NetCAT team for testing

Apache NetBeans IDE 12.0 Community Acceptance Survey

2020-05-19 Thread Jiří Kovalský

Hello NetBeans community,

since the Apache NetBeans IDE 12.0 Beta 4 [1] build has been
published already a week ago I would like to remind everyone about the
final Community Acceptance survey [2]. The essential purpose of this
survey is to find out if NetBeans community accepts the latest Beta
build as ready for GA or not. Please note that this poll is not about
Apache NetBeans IDE 12.0 sources but about its functionality and behavior.

  [1]
https://builds.apache.org/view/M-R/view/NetBeans/job/netbeans-TLP/job/netbeans/job/release120/14/artifact/dist/netbeans/netbeans-12.0-beta4-bin.zip

  [2] https://forms.gle/k7JnPCSQh5MJUCzh8

This is a very important milestone of the release cycle so we
turn to you - NetBeans users - with request for help. Please download
this Beta 4 build, use it to edit your Java/HTML/JavaScript/PHP sources,
debug the code, try refactoring features, deploy to Tomcat/GlassFish,
simply test your typical use cases and once you gain a solid opinion
about the Beta 4 build please take this short survey. Since it closes
soon please complete the survey as soon as you can.

Thanks for your cooperation and feedback!

Re: Renaming PP2 UC to Legacy & adding PP3 UC in NetBeans 12.0 Beta 3

2020-04-21 Thread Jiří Kovalský

Perfect.

Now, we need some brave person to replace the links as described in my:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANSINFRA-185

because NetBeans 12.0 Beta 3 still refers to the incorrect old 11.0
catalog and this must change prior to the 12.0 release.

Any volunteer?

A definitely constructive and appreciative +1! Looks great.

The vc suffix is meant to be just for builds being voted on (voting

I doubt it. The DTD does not require the message_digest as required element.

Also the catalog.xml checks and validates against the DTD successfully.

I am afraid that someone will have to debug the

Re: Any objections against turning netbeans.org OFF?

Hi Eric,

we have only manually migrated the most precious Wiki pages and as
far as I know there is nothing planned to bulk migrate everything. In my
opinion it is not even needed but if anyone would want to host the
snapshot of the wiki.netbeans.org, we can create a MySQL dump and
publish it somewhere for download together with all images/attachments.
Should be just a couple of GBs.

And the NETBEANS-3569 issue has been implemented.

In my opinion, the new NetBeans Plugin Portal 3.0 is ready to replace
the old one. I hope you agree Ernie.

Thanks,

I believe that until [NETBEANS-3569] is resolved, the portal is not
ready for general usage.

It's fine for creating the update center catalog, but not for user

rather https://plugins.netbeans.org instead plus aligning the
decommission of Oracle hosting to 12.0 release date.

We may want to _also_ shut down "plugins.netbeans.org", and then make
"plugins.netbeans.org" point to
"http_S_://netbeans-vm.apache.org/pluginportal".

Keep in mind also the IDE links are not directly to
plugins.netbeans.org but to eg.

All the links to consider handling are in
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__github.com_apache_netbeans-2Djenkins-2Dlib_blob_master_meta_netbeansrelease.json=DwIBaQ=RoP1YumCXCgaWHvlZYR8PZh8Bv7qIrMUB65eapI_JnE=8_Pz0x0SKeT5e3IehhQKCbQ2xl3tz40jnCU133NrdP4=yl-uwrZrlGdu9aTYAgJMbof8Ln0swZDwPl1SZed6vGs=-KlAz8n75eHQ02bKTVOzdPNB2i-YxZO01D13OmHaYSE=

It might be good to keep existing plugin infrastructure live until
12.0 is released IMO.

Best wishes,

Neil

Yes, the redirection will be taken care of since ASF already owns the
netbeans.org domain and it now forwards the traffic to the Oracle

I think it would be a good idea to try to reach all contributers (I
assume a mail address is present) and get them to the new (still to

be

completed) plugin portal.

I would not host the plugins anywhere. If I remember correctly the
plugin portal was a wild mix of licenses and so from my perspective
this is a dangerous endeavour. For example take a GPLed plugin, you'd
need the source code to redistribute it properly.

This is totally different, to the code donation from oracle. Even if

we

end up not integrating all donated code, it is still usable (i.e.

later

intergrated or used outside Apache NetBeans). The same does not hold
true for all plugins.

Oracle could think about creating a static site, that way the plugins
would still be accessible, could be transfered to a passive file host
and be done.

Matthias

I think it would be a good idea to try to reach all contributers (I
assume a mail address is present) and get them to the new (still to be

I would not host the plugins anywhere. If I remember correctly the
plugin portal was a wild mix of licenses and so from my perspective
this is a dangerous endeavour. For example take a GPLed plugin, you'd
need the source code to redistribute it properly.

This is totally different, to the code donation from oracle. Even if we
end up not integrating all donated code, it is still usable (i.e. later
intergrated or used outside Apache NetBeans). The same does not hold
true for all plugins.

Oracle could think about creating a static site, that way the plugins
would still be accessible, could be transfered to a passive file host
and be done.

unfortunately the Wiki [1] was not fully up-to-date so I just fixed it.

jira might do the trick.

I'm asking both for insights to help me with setting up my modules and
to avoid filing duplicate or unneeded issues. I'm seeing a lot of rough
edges and missing features (and not always sure which is which).

Handling license and pom data seems problematic. Additionally, the
process outlined for "How to get plugin on Plugin Portal Update Center"
has a lot of info input manuallyto the apache plugin portal that used to
be (should be?) in the nbm; this is confusing to me. Manually installing
a _downloaded_ maven nbm will likely be missing lots of info, e.g.
licenses.

In the web infra chats we had a while ago I'm pretty sure we discussed

be my preference, ideally keeping, or if not, forwarding, the existing

So, there is a couple of question now:
What should happen with those plugins not moved over at all, but which are
maybe still useful?

This generic question results in a generic answer so we should rather
talk about such useful plugins individually but we have e-mail addresses
for all plugin authors so we can at least try approaching them via
e-mail. If that does not help, some plugins contain links to their
websites which often means source code repositories hence if someone is
a true fan s/he can clone the repository and take over maintenance or
even development of the popular plugins.

Should authors of plugins (dedicated to old NB versions) also be forced to
move them and by that update them?

Yes, absolutely, there needs to be integration with Apache LDAP system.

Concern about Google SSO doesn't surprise me. While not an answer as
such, I wonder if sign in via GitHub account might be somewhat more
useful - still maybe not fully accessible, but perhaps a way to also
link across to Apache credentials if necessary?

Again, I think this is something that would have been picked up
earlier if development had been more focused here in the Apache
community.

This is what we're doing now. We needed to get a baseline implementation as
a starting point for discussion, which we have now.

Exactly, as soon as the sources are in the repository everyone can
contribute with their ideas and get the community approve it.

No, PMC has nothing to do with that. Verification of plugins is in the
hands of a group of NetBeans community volunteers. If you want to join
the team, let me know but it represents a long term commitment to test
incoming NetBeans plugin against multiple different versions and then
casting your votes almost on a daily basis.

The 3 most substantial changes if compared with Plugin Portal 2.0 are:

* Only plugins published in the Maven Central Repository can be
registered in the Plugin Portal 3.0.
* Only NBM or JAR file types are supported binary formats.
* Google SSO is used as authentication mechanism.

The concept of community controlled publishing of plugins on the
Plugin Portal Update Center remains unchanged i.e. if two verifiers
approve a plugin and nobody disapproves it, the plugin gets
automatically added to the module catalog for appropriate NetBeans
version.

Sounds good so far? Cool! The purpose of this message though is to
ask for cooperation. :) As you could have guessed we need to load the
new Plugin Portal with meaningful plugins so if you have developed a
NetBeans plugin, please publish it in the Maven Central and then share
it with others through the new Plugin Portal. And obviously sending us
any feedback on the registration process or Plugin Portal's new user
interface in general will be much appreciated! Bugs should be created
against "updatecenters - Pluginportal" component.

Finally, once the final polishing is made, we will open source the
codebase so that everyone can participate in improving the website.
And if you are curious, the credit for creating the new Plugin Portal
goes to Jan Pirek (jpirek). Hats off to you, Jan!

Thanks and long live the Plugin Portal 3.0!

[news] Plugin Portal 3.0 on the horizon

2019-10-09 Thread Jiří Kovalský

Hello NetBeans people,

if you have ever fine-tuned your NetBeans IDE with some
community-contributed plugin or you are a plugin developer yourself,
please read this e-mail carefully.

The last reason for netbeans.org domain existence is the NetBeans
Plugin Portal - our repository of NetBeans extensions. Given the
original infrastructure is no longer maintained by Oracle and in order
to avoid potential legal issues with hosting 3rd party binaries licensed
under Apache incompatible licenses we have decided for a complete
rewrite of the Plugin Portal website.

Today, we are happy to announce the result of our effort, the brand
new Plugin Portal version 3.0 [1] which is running on the same Apache
infrastructure which already hosts Synergy - the tests management tool
for NetCAT programs.

Now we only need to get the nbjavac plugin to the Maven Central repository.

OK, we need to clearly document this, because it's a confusing point each

If I understand it correctly, the update center needs to be created or made
available after the release -- I can't remember why that is, apologies.

Basically, how can we make at least nb-javac and the Oracle JS Parser
available so that the kind of problem we're seeing with daily builds and
those who do the builds themselves won't have this problem.

Re: NB11.1 inbound - what is NetCAT lite?

Yes, Light NetCAT X.Y means that we only "wake up" tribes which got some
new feature(s) since NetBeans X.Y-1 release. So, if X.Y contains no new

I guess we should actually have an email about the release schedule,

Yes, with the big caveat that it's not an official release and may not
work at all etc. This needs to be spelled out on any page that links to
such downloads. Preferably, daily builds would be on a sub-page by

Re: [DISCUSS] Draft release schedule

2019-05-14 Thread Jiří Kovalský

Hi Neil,

thanks a lot for taking the time and putting this plan together!

I like the LTS idea of annual feature releases in April with
full-fledged NetCAT programs. I assume that only these LTS releases
would have Update Centers, wouldn't they? With this approach we could
even aim to release the three minor dot releases from master and only
for the LTS one we would create a branch. This branch would be used for
branding and fixing release blockers discovered by NetCAT prior GA and
back-porting critical fixes distributed via Update Center after GA.

I also second having the fixed Feature Freeze dates which would lock
master for anything else than bug fixes until the actual release is out.
If some functionality area would be enhanced, we would "wake up"
corresponding NetCAT Tribe to test the new feature(s) and update their
test specifications (Lite NetCAT). If no new features are added, NetCAT
would be skipped.

Does it make sense?

My two cents,
-Jirka

Dne 13. 05. 19 v 19:20 Neil C Smith napsal(a):

[snip]

* Fixed quarterly releases based off master.
* Fixed merge windows and feature freeze dates.
* Annual LTS releases that go through full NetCAT process and remain
downloadable for the year. Minimal backporting of critical bugs - you
want features, jump on the fast train and help test them.
* LTS has shorter merge window to allow time for NetCAT, and should
have less new features anyway!
* Next releases are then NB 11.1 (Jul), NB 11.2 (Oct), NB 11.3 (Jan
2020), NB 12.0 LTS (Apr 2020) - perhaps counter-intuitively major
version increases when least new features.
* NB 11.0 remains available until next April.
* All commits to master go in the next release and release branch

merge window, and all merges during those periods take into account
