Software RAID errors when shutting down

RE: [e-smith-devinfo] EIDE Software Raid (Mirroring)

2001-04-25 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Gordon,

I've installed E-Smith 4.1.1 several on a system using redundant 30GB EIDE
drives (mirroring). When I go to shutdown, I get a error when RAID tries to
shutdown.

When it reboots, it sync's the drives and continues loading the system.

Is there a seperate command to shut RAID down before using the shutdown -h
now command?

RE: [e-smith-devinfo] unable to do a backup 4.0

2001-04-25 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Troy,

I just had this same problem today. It turned out to be a corrupt
esmithsg.bak file. I did another backup and restore and the new file was
OK. I didn't have any luck restoring the old file, even after a fresh
E-Smith install.

Try doing another backup and see if you can restore that file.

Hi all,

I am about to grade our test smith server 4.0. But when I try and access the
backup/restore link (web access) I get "You are not authorized to view this
page".

Any idea what this could be?

I am logging in as admin - so could it be a cgi problem? if so, from the
console what command should I do to perform a manual backup.

Thanks again for a great product.

WinNT uses machine passwords which they change from time to time. When I
mirror a WinNT machine to set it up again, I have to delete the machine
account on the e-smith server, regenerate it again like described in the
last emails and then switch on the client WinNT machine between Workgroup
and Domain. If there doeson't appear a "welcome in xx domain" message, it
never worked. They have such things like SID (Security Identifiers) to
identify WinNT clients and prevent that a NT machine can easy become a
member of the domain. ATTENTION: If you have the admin privileg on the
laptop and you try the above mentioned way you may loose the SID for your
"real" domain at work. I have no experience with different log ons at
different PDC.

In the Samba manual, there is a section on how to load printer drivers to
client P/C's (win9x). It takes you through the steps necessary to do this. I
have tried it on a stand alone p/c, and it works fine. Haven't tried it on

On second thought (and some analysis by David Brown), No. 5 is a bad
idea.
The system may check for the existence of files in /etc/samba, and if it
finds
them, remove them and replace them with symlinks to the same files in /etc.
Instead of symlinking the whole directory to /etc, it'd be better to
leave /etc/samba/ in place, and create symlinks there to the appropriate
files:

# ln -s /etc/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf
# ln -s /etc/smbpasswd /etc/samba/smbpasswd
# ln -s /etc/MACHINE.SID /etc/samba/MACHINE.SID
# ln -s /etc/lmhosts /etc/samba/lmhosts
# ln -s /etc/smbusers /etc/samba/smbusers

In the end I slunk back to the 2.0.7 Samba.. Does anyone KNOW who to

RE: [e-smith-devinfo] Samba Upgrade HOWTO available

2001-07-16 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Hi Dan,

Read through the how-to and it looks really great.

[root@e-smith /root]# rpm -Uvh samba-2.2.1a-20010713.i386.rpm

Do you have to add the --force command when upgrading the samba?

I've put together the first draft of a HOWTO for upgrading Samba to
version 2.2.1a at
http://www.familybrown.org/howtos/samba-upgrade-howto.html. It includes
instructions on configuring Samba to automatically create machine
accounts, so you no longer have to add them manually. Any feedback is
appreciated.

Of course. I was just going through some old posts and double checking them

No need to do that; by removing all three of the earlier packages, you
should be removing any conflicts.

While I was looking through the release notes for Samba 2.2.1a, I
noticed that it now contains support for PAM authentication. Seems to
me that configuring it this way for e-smith would be a good idea, as
that would make for one less authentication token to update every time
you change a user's password. I haven't yet tried configuring this, but
thought somebody else might be interested.

That said, I notice that the documentation you reference (as well as

that as such. I wonder if there's a problem there.

I'd love to find out HOW to copy the printer drivers down to Sama..

Here's what happened to me.

1) Followed instructions and installed Samba on existing system. System had
2 printers configured and shared OK. Worked under Samba 2.0.7

2) Reinstalled Win2k on old server machine (to downgrade from PDC and AD)

3) Tried to reconnect to printers. Printer message box told me that this
was an "Unknown printer" and W2K tried to install a driver from "*.inf"

4) After several hours of bashing head on TRYING to work out how to write
the printer drivers onto the E-Smith box I gave up and put Samba 2.0.7 back
on. Printers connected perfectly and W2K installed the local drivers for
it.

Help!!
I'd very much like to use the updated Samba - but the printer drivers issue
seemed to be too difficult to solve. Samba doc (How I HATE Unix style
documentation) gave little mention to it.

Any Advice?
Dave

That's not entirely correct even of Samba 2.0.7, but the method of
making it store the drivers is quite a kludge (I think there were some
directions posted at e-smith.made-to-order.net a while back). With
Samba 2.2.1, you're supposed to be able to store the drivers just like
on a WinNT server. I've got it to work, sort of, but it seems kind of
flaky right now.

Eric,

To send mail/set up website,

It's really helpful if you have a static IP.

1. you need a domain name
2. you need DNS records MX & A set up.
3. you need to know your static IP address of the Esmith box.

And just because you can reach a box via IP address doesn't mean you are
stealthy. Trust me, cablemodem's get scanned all the time. Usually by
people on the same @home connection as you.

You can use dynamic IP addresses as well... and they work perfectly. Go to
dyndns.org and sign up with them. Then configure ESSG to accept dyndns.org
in the console mode. Presto, instant mail and web services! You can then
have [EMAIL PROTECTED] as your email and stealth.dyndns.org as your
website.

Allen:

Thanks for your suggestions.
I fear I was not clear enough in my original post:
I don't want dynamic DNS service... this box is to
remain "hidden" from name services to the outside
world... it's a "home" service so it's just being
used for it's gateway and internal server properties.
There IS an interface to the outside world but as
far as @home knows it's just another PC on their
network. It browses the web, sends email, POPs
email, etc.

Although there is a web server on the box it's
access is via IP address only so it's not really
visible to the whole world (unless they just guess
the IP).

I've subscribed to this list for several weeks,
read the posts and reviewed the e-smith docs, both
with the system and on-line.

The reason I'm posting here is because I cannot
find in any of that documentation how to do
what I want: a "stealth" box. That and the Qmail
not working correctly.

Maybe I HAVE to have a dynamic DNS to identify
the domain I'm "in" before the e-smith server will
function correctly?

RE: [e-smith-devinfo] ldap password anyone?

2001-07-18 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Hi Dan,

Ok. I like solution number 1. It addresses all of my concerns.

> Thanks Dan. I finally was able to bind to the server via a http interface
> (php). I would like to add people to the LDAP that are not on the ESSG.
I

Two suggestions:

1. Using the existing directory, you can add people to the LDAP directory
by simply adding a user account through the server manager with the
   following characteristics:
  - On the Create User Account screen, under "Email Delivery", choose
"Forward to address below"
  - Enter their address in the space provided.
  - Create user account but do NOT set the password

With a valid password set, the user account has no access to the
server. However, email to that user *will* still be delivered
(to the external address) and the account will appear in the
   directory.

2. Daniel Tan has contributed a HOWTO about creating a global address
book. I have not used it, but it may be something you want to check out:

 http://www.netbase-t.com/esmith/AddressBook-howto.html

I guess the third option would be to figure out the OpenLDAP commands
necessary to add information to the LDAP directory included with your
e-smith server. More info at http://www.openldap.org/

RE: [e-smith-devinfo] Server monitoring

2001-07-23 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Are you talking about creating a "symbolic link"?

ln -s symbolic-link real-location

Eg. ln -s /admin /home/e-smith/files/users/admin/home

Creates a sym-link in the root directory but the real location is in the
home directory.

  Hi all,

It has been a long time since we first posted a message about a Server
Monitoring package. Once we have finished our exams we have allmost
finished it.

OK, if we install all the packages directly we get a perfectly
functioning software (both in 4.1.2 and 4.0) but we cant generate the
rpm file :(

We have followed Kirrily's howto about making an e-smith rpm.

  We have the following files:

/etc/e-smith/web/functions/monitor
/etc/cron.d/monitor
/usr/bin/cpuinfo.pl
/usr/bin/creabases
/usr/bin/hdinfo.pl
/usr/bin/meminfo.pl
/usr/bin/netinfo.pl

We make the tar file and compress it.

We modify the specs file from e-smith

  Just to things:

Requires: sysstat >= 3.3.2
Requires: rrdtool >= 1.0.28

We don't know how to put both dependencies so we just wrote it two
times. Is this correct?

  In the %post we have:

ln -s /etc/e-smith/web/functions/monitor
/etc/e-smith/web/panels/manager/cgi-bin/monitor
mkdir /var/lib/rrd
/usr/bin/creabases
rm /usr/bin/creabases
/etc/rc.d/init.d/crond restart

  We do:

rpm -bp e-smith-monitor-0.5.spec and get no error

  and:

rpm -ba e-smith-monitor-0.5.spec and get the following message:

File must begin with "/":
File not found: /usr/bin/creabases
PreReq: /bin/sh
Requires: sysstat >=3.3.2 rrdtool >= 1.0.28

Whats going on with the first two lines?

Please, give us a hand. The software is allmost done and we would like
to give it to e-smith community.

BTW, please could somebody from e-smith contact me to get some ftp
space :)

  Thanks all.

PD. This is the whole spec file, I dont know if I can attach files to
this list so i just place it here :)

Mm, I allways get confused with links but I have made a test and
read the man page and it seems the command is:

  ln -s real-file symbolic-link

At least this gives me a link, the other way I get an error says
real-file allready exists.

  Thanks. I will keep searching.

Trevor, in your HowTO you may wish to add information for what this
does. As an example:

Problem: You need a way to inform people sending users e-mail that the
user is out of the office.

Solution: This HowTo installs an autoreply e-mail message facility.

In the body of your HowTo you may wish to state where the message text is
stored and if it is possible to edit it, who can and how. If not then
this should be stated as well.

[e-smith-devinfo] SquidGuard Howto

2001-07-25 Thread Trevor Ouellette

I just finished installing squidguard on my box using Darrell's howto.
works great.

Couple questions though. I would like to take the squidguard filtering
system one step further.

1. Download the latest blacklist from
ftp://ftp.univ-tlse1.fr/pub/reseau/cache/squidguard_contrib/ every night to
the my ES box.

2. Untar the file into a directory. Move the appropriate files to the
/usr/local/squidGuard/db/ folder on the ES box.

3. Reload squid/squidGuard with the new settings.

My wishes (in the future):

1. Build an interface in the manager/ibay --> even PHP would be fine to
configure settings.

2. Allow certain users/groups to have unrestricted access, while everyone
else gets "filtered" content.

Any ideas? I was thinking of using cron.daily to run my "squidguard-fetch"
script. But when I overwrite the other files in /usr/local/squidGuard/db/
squidGuard aborts and no content filtering is available.

Darrell, how do your customers update their blacklists? Is is manual or
automatic?

I don't know about changing; I'm sure awk or sed could do what you're
looking for, but I don't know their syntax at all. To remove the entire
line,
though, is pretty simple:

grep -v "my phrase here" filename > newfile

Hi all,

I searched the internet for an rpm for my e-smith box which allows me to
send and receive files with msn messenger. Is there anyone who can tell me
where to find this? ICQ is working perfect, but I prefer messenger.

TIA,

2001-07-26 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Hi Timothee,

No I'm not sure that it will solve your file uploading/downloading probs,
but if you only have one client on your network that uses it, then you can
just port forward.

As you and Justin mentioned, it is a NAT problem. So until a module is
found, only one computer inside your network will be able to up/download
files.

[e-smith-devinfo] squidguard returns

2001-07-26 Thread Trevor Ouellette

I've done a lot of work today on squidguard... but I still need to implement
it into the manager.

It automatically downloads the latest public blacklists and installs them
weekly.

I've written 6 scripts: trusted-d, trusted-e, trusted-u, untrusted-d,
untrusted-e, and untrusted-u for updating the user-database in squidguard.
It works perfectly.

The scripts work like this:

If I'm adding a pornographic domain (xxx.com) to my database, I simply
enter:

# ./untrusted-d xxx.com

And it's added. I can remove them as well:

# ./untrusted-d xxx.com r

It's very simple. I would like to display forms on a webpage (ibay) that
the administrator can enter the "xxx.com" in the box and hit submit. Then
PHP or perl passes those arguments "$1" and "$2" to my 6 scripts.

Any ideas? Any perl wizards out there? I can give you full details and a
copy of the scripts if you are not sure.

RE: [e-smith-devinfo] squidguard returns

2001-07-27 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Hi Darrell,

Don't worry about implementing your ibay webpage into the manager. I can do
that part. In fact I can create the ibay and implement it into the manager
with a script that I built.

I am having a heck of a time with passing variables to my scripts from a
webpage. Thanks... and I will be sending the scripts to you shortly!

Sounds like you've done quite a lot. I'm not a perl wizard at all but
I'll offer to take a look. Forward me your scripts and any docs and I'll
try to follow along and assist.

My simple first thought for testing would be to create a webpage, place
it in the ibay to capture the user input to a /tmp/squidgaurd-update
file. Then have your scripts read in the file and process the variables.

If this works then incorporate everything into the e-smith-manager by
borrowing and editing some existing scripts.

make another perl file called loader ( for this example ) that
takes
the script name the domain and the switch as variables and then
check that script name is valid before running the domain and the
switch
thru it.

this will keep users from being able to attempt to run other
executables.

in this loader you can also put html return calls to indicate
success or failure
and then call back to the original form.

or generate an entire page in the loader with the success or
failure notice and
a link to add another.

I wrote my squidguard interface today... all in PHP! I can now update
domains, expressions and URL's for trusted and untrusted files. Add, remove

squidguard text files.

But, does anyone know how to execute a squid restart from a web interface?
(not the /etc/rc.d/init.d/squid restart commands). Maybe an e-smith restart
or something that doesn't have to be root to execute... I'm having
permission problems with squid restarting, etc...

There has to be something...

[e-smith-devinfo] Restarting squid from an I-Bay

2001-07-31 Thread Trevor Ouellette

I know that I've asked all of you this before... but someone here must be
smart enough to figure this out with me...

If anyone knows how to restart squid from an Ibay, please let me know...
what permissions to set, etc. I have no problem executing a script that
runs "/etc/rc.d/init.d/squid restart", but squid realizes what I'm doing and
promply stops. I'm running as user "www" because it's a I-Bay.

Can I run an I-Bay from port :980? It's a PHP script BTW, not perl. I'm
putting this challenge out to all of you! I will do my best to answer any
questions that you may have re: this problem.

You could install and configure sudo to allow www user to execute init.d
scripts as root...

I haven't done it before, but i've used sudo, and it works quite well. Has
anyone tried it on an e-smith box?

2001-07-31 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Thanks everyone for your help with my problem. I got it. The "sudo"
recommendation from J. Lewis did the trick. I'm just tightening up security
now.

I have been writing an installation script to install the entire squidguard,
lists, updates, IP security stuff, etc.

I guess the next step would be to rpm it.

Does anyone have any favorable experiences with network
print servers that either coexist with e-smith, or work well
with it? I have a network with printers no where near the
e-smith server, so a parallel port connection is out of the
question.

Thanks,

[e-smith-devinfo] Release "1" of squidguard for ESSG

2001-07-31 Thread Trevor Ouellette

How to Install the gc-guard system -- Any beta testers??

Log in as root to your ESSG server.

mkdir /squidguard
cd /squidguard
wget -nv http://www.greencomputer.com/gc-guard-1.tar
tar -xf gc-guard-1.tar
./create-squidguard

That's it! The settings can be found under Security, Content Filtering.
There is link to a help at the bottom of that page.

It updates it's blacklist once a week, administrators can update/remove
domains, expressions and URL's from a GUI in the manager, admins can also
allow specific IP's to have Full access to the Internet instead of the
default filtered access.

Give it a go...

Thanks to Darrell May, JL (for the sudo stuff), and of course Lorenzo! I
hope I didn't forget anybody!

If you grab a binary of http://httpd.apache.org/dist/httpd/binaries/linux/
and install it (it has an install script and puts it in /usr/local/apache)
set the httpd.conf for this 'new' server to another port, example 8080 and
install frontpage extensions to this server. (I have both the 2000 and 2002
working this way) then you can connect to http://www.domain.com:8080 via
frontpage client, and this doesnt brake or interefere with e-smith at all.
Works great for me with over 70 domains hosted with frontpage.

2001-08-06 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for the compliments on the squidguard stuff. Would it be possible to
have you send me your src rpms for FP?

If you have any notes, or misc links/docs that would really help. I really
haven't made any headway with FP 2002 yet... but hopefully I will get it
going.

Basically, I just want FP2002 extentions running on the Primary Ibay. No
need for virtual domains to have the extentions loaded. And if I have to
access the manager via a different port... so be it.

Thanks, Wayne!

Perhaps they might add:

- CodeRed worm compatibility

I've recently seen a post on another mailing list which suggests that
FrontPage extensions for *nix amount to a cut down IIS, which is just as
susceptible to CodeRed as IIS is. Sounds like something you should check
before going much further.

RE: [e-smith-devinfo] Frontpage 2000 extentions

2001-08-07 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Hi Wayne,

I agree with Charlie. I knew about some of the holes that get exposed when
FP is installed, but I didn't realized that my linux box could be exposed to
worms like Code Red (I&II), etc.

Just a quick question though... Whistle's Interjet and Sun Cobalt's Qube3
both include FP extentions on their units, has anybody heard about FP
extention security breaches on their products?

It appears that the Qube3 is not affected by the Code Red worm... so I
wonder what their developers know that we don't... :-)

Anyway, let's just leave it at that. Wayne, please do send me the RPM's...
I would still like to take a look at them (and verify that code red affects
FP Ext.).

Thanks,

Trev.

Trevor, after seeing this note from Charlie I feel like sending you an
Apache rpm setup to work with FP 2000 extensions would be like sending
out a mail bomb... :)

Have you considered using FrontPage with an e-smith server without
installing the extensions? You can set the compatibility options in FP
so it will work with an "extension free" Unix box. For more info check
out:

  http://www.georgetown.edu/uis/web/software/frontpage/index.html

Perhaps this approach would give you everything you're looking for, and
it can also produce pages that are more browser-neutral.

Let me know if you still want the email bomb.

Yes. I got them to install by putting them in the same directory and using:

rpm -Uvh e-smi*

That did the trick.

These two packages are interdependent. To install them without using
--nodeps, you'll need to specify them both at the same time: rpm -Uvh
apache-1.3.19-5.i386.rpm mod_ssl-2.8.1...

2001-08-07 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Hi Bertrand,

Did you put allow your IP addresses to be in the "Full Internet Access"
section? Make sure that your IP List is empty.

In root prompt... try this:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/squid restart
cat /var/log/squidguard.log (and look for a successful start of squidguard)
cat /var/log/messages

Also check if you have anything in your /usr/local/squidGuard/db folders...

If I think of anything to try I will contact you asap.

RE: [e-smith-devinfo] startmail through webinterface?

2001-08-07 Thread Trevor Ouellette

Just to let you all know... sudo could potentially open up security risks...
I have done everything I could to reduce these risks when I used it...
(internal access only... limiting what command the user can run, etc.).

When using sudo, never allow external Internet access to it and always limit
what specific commands can be run. It's a very powerful command.

the sudo file is in /etc/sudoers

Hi Michael. You might want to look into using 'sudo' as mentioned
recently on list for Trevor's squidguard implementation. Start with 'man

[e-smith-devinfo] squidguard for essg reports

2001-08-07 Thread Trevor Ouellette

All,

Has anybody else installed/used the squidguard.tar that I put together?
Bertrand seems to be having problems with it after about a week?

I'm suspecting the crons.weekly script isn't doing it's job properly... or
maybe the new blacklist.tar.gz file has changed enough that my download
script is having issues.

Anyway... if anybody could report back to me that would be great.

Charlie,

Where did you see that FP extensions can allow Code Red? Cobalt's line of
servers resist the code red (i&ii) worm and they include FP extensions.

Maybe better firewalling could protect the FP extentions? Only allow
internal access, etc.

Just a thought... because I couldn't find anything about Code Red and
FP/Linux.

yeah and if you foward my mail to 10 people in your adressbook nokia will
give you a FREE CELLPHONE!! :)

ok sorry bout that

But seriously e-smith is positively absolutely not at risc , the reason for
this is that code red uses a known buffer overflow in iis.

The vulnerability lies within the code that allows a Web server to interact
with Microsoft Indexing Service functionality. The vulnerable Indexing
Service ISAPI filter is installed by default on all versions of IIS. The
problem lies in the fact that the .ida (Indexing Service) ISAPI filter does
not perform proper "bounds checking" on user inputted buffers and therefore
is susceptible to a buffer overflow attack

Isapi filters arent inalled with fpe
And even if it where

it will only exploit Windows 2000 web servers because it overwrites EIP with
a jmp that is only correct under Windows 2000.

since i imagine most of you arent familiar with pc assembly in lamens terms
this means , basicly code red interups the normal processing of the
webserver in order to execute its own code , it as uses one of windows own
functions for that. Under NT4.0 etc... the location for that function is
different so, the process will simply crash instead of allowing the worm to
infect the system and
spread.

There is an e-mail address at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can try send them an email (nicely worded of course :-) and they will
add it to the robot exemption list.

You can add the incorrectly banned site to your trusted domains files in the
squidguard manager interface. The sites added via the interface have more
authority than the blacklist and will take precedent.

I have only been going today - so I cannot comment on unblocked state. It
works
perfectly at this time. Thank you very much for a very necessary and very
nice
program.

[e-smith-devinfo] blacklist for SquidGuard

2001-08-14 Thread Trevor Ouellette

ftp://ftp.univ-tlse1.fr/pub/reseau/cache/squidguard_contrib/

This link looks like it contains the latest blacklist.tar.gz, but I'm still
trying to confirm with Lars Erik Haland from SquidGuard where the blacklist
disappeared.

[e-smith-devinfo] Cron error messages. What's going on?

2001-08-17 Thread Trevor Ouellette

I'm getting this message once a week:

From: xxx
To: xxx
Subject:Cron run-parts /etc/cron.weekly

/etc/cron.weekly/makewhatis.cron:

zcat: stdout: Broken pipe
zcat: stdout: Broken pipe
zcat: stdout: Broken pipe
zcat: stdout: Broken pipe
zcat: stdout: Broken pipe
zcat: stdout: Broken pipe

What is going on? It was fine for a month and then out of the blue, this
started.

[e-smith-devinfo] SquidGuard issues

2001-08-17 Thread Trevor Ouellette

I just wanted to update everyone on a few things about the squidguard
manager situation.

1. Squidguard.org is working on fixing the blacklist.tar.gz. I'm trying to
stay in contact with them as we speak.

2. The squidguard manager script will have to be re-installed if the ES
console is updated. This is a bug that I'm tracking down. It's pretty
simple to workaround for now.

3. Put a password on the ibay in order to prevent LAN users from accessing
the interface.

RE: [e-smith-devinfo] Signal-Events (was Named server not responding)

2001-08-20 Thread Trevor Ouellette

What is the difference between signal-event console-save and post-upgrade?

Why would I use one over the other?

After any package upgrades, unless you know specific less disruptive
command, you should always do:

/sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot

Those commands will configure all services, then start them all in the
correct sequence (after the reboot).
