[digitalradio] Clarification : Establishing digital calling/beacon frequencies

2006-12-20 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien
Just to clarify my original point...

I'm looking to establish a suggested calling frequency for ALL digital modes
except CW, PSK31, RTTY, SSTV , PACTOR , and ALE(data ALE).

My suggestion is that members of this list utilize a common frequency to call
CQ and/or use attended beacon features within their digital software. This
would be for Olivia, Dominio EX, Throb, PSK63/125 , , MT63 ,Hell CHIP,
MFSK16/8, PAX/PAX2 , THROB, experimental AX25.

The idea is simply to make it easier to find stations to work rather than
trawling the bands in 300-500 Hz ranges looking for potential signals.

My experience suggest that even on good propagation days, say on 20M, the
amount of simultaneous QSOs in the aforementioned modes rarely exceeds 3-5 .
When it is at the 5 level, it is often 2-3 Olivia stations, maybe 1 MFSK16 and
one Hell. I will argue that MOST of the time it is less than three
simultaneous QSOs . Sometimes NO signals at all.

Thus, the amount of interest in the exotic digital modes is at such a level
that we would benefit from clustering, and our use of a calling/beacon
frequency would not likely clutter up the portion of the band.

If we established 4 beacon frequencies (80,40,30, and 20M) you could easily
monitor the bands via scan features in the radio .

Again, the idea would be just to meet on the calling frequency and move
further up/down the band for extended conversation. I am NOT suggesting a
different calling frequency for each mode.

20 M seems like the easies band to establish a data frequency that allows
worldwide participation. The others are more complex due to varying regional
bandplans. I will read the feedback I have received so far and suggest some
frequencies to try this weekend.

AGAINST MORSE it is a very efficient mode of
communication and it should continue as a mode of
communication for those who want to use it.

But that is just what Morse is: ome MODE of
communication. Imagine having to have to sit an
exam for every mode you want to transmit in!
Imagine an exam for SSB, PSK31, RTTL, Olivia, and
any of the new digital modes!!! Ridiculous? I

[digitalradio] 15 dec summary ?

2006-12-15 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien
Thanks for reminded us Rick. With all that has been written, I have forgotten
what is new. Would the following rough summary be close?

Some parts of the 40 and 80M phone privileges have been extended in to the
former CW or digital portions.?

CW operators have lost nothing, just have to share more ?

Digital modes, other than automated stations , remain mostly unaffected except
for the ability to send some images within MFSK16 ?

SSTV folks have to remain in the phone portion of the bands since those
signals contain images and are wider than 500 Hz

CW net folks maybe miffed and feel the need to move but they don;t have to if
they don't mind having SSB signals as neighbours ?

What else did I miss ?

  David,

Most of the new rules are understandable, just a few that were confusing
or not completely clear or, at least in one case, in conflict with other
  rules.

The ARRL announced today that their late filed Petition for
Reconsideration has not been acted upon by the FCC, therefore the new
  regulation is now in effect.

The 500 Hz semi-automatic automatic stations will continue to operate
just as they have for many years although the ones that formerly
operated abover 3600 KHz will have to migrate down below the 3600
ceiling here in the U.S. for digital data/RTTY.

There will be no fully automatic 80 meter stations within the U.S. at
this time, since there is no automatic area available under the new
rules. This also means that there will be no semi-automatic stations
within the U.S. that operate wide band modes either since those stations
must operate within the automatic segment.

That does not mean that there will be no Pactor 3 operation since it
would be legal to transmit P3 from a station with a control operator
present to an automatic station in other countries, and there may be
some who will have a BBS system with a control operator present or with
some kind of remote operation, that would allow them to continue to
operate in a similar manner to what they had been doing. But it will
likely mean a lot fewer P3 stations on the 80 meter band.

Subject: [digitalradio] Best sound card for digital

Hi - I just joined yesterday, and this is my first post. I am 70 years old,
and although I have a fairly good knowledge of electronics due to having worked
as a electronics tech and field engineer for many years, I am somewhat computer
illiterate, since it was BC (before computers LOL) when I was working in the
field. I recently bought a nice Yaesu FT-920 and am currently building a Fox
Delta FD-SC1 interface kit to connect to my el cheapo HP Wal-Mart special
computer, which has only on board sound. It is a 1.2 Ghz running Windows XP
Home Edition SP2. I want to get a better sound card, but don't really know
what are the important things to look for. I have read on another forum (HRD,
which I use for rig control) that an external SC is better because it gets the
SC out and away from possible hum and noise pickup from the computer itself.
This seems to make sense to me.

My main question is how important is 8 bit DAC vs 16 bit or 24 bit? How
much does this affect decoding of digital modes? And how important is the
speed it runs at, 48 Khz vs 96 Khz? I have been looking at several sound
cards, both internal and external USB ones. One of the less expensive external
ones I see on Ebay is the Creative Sound Blaster USB MP3+. It uses USB 1.1 and
is 16 bit @ 48 Khz with a front/rear/center sub channel S/N ratio of 102 db and
headphone/side S/n of 96 db. (I don't know which S/N ratio is applicable to
digital decoding??) The next step up from this would be the Sound Blaster Live
External USB which is a 24 bit and 100 db S/N, but since it is also using USB
1.1 this is not actually what it does due to the limitations of USB 1.1. This
one sells for a bit more than the MP3+.

Then you get into the Audigy SC's, , the 2 NX external @ 24 bit/96 Khz and
102 db S/N (USB 2.0) looks nice but is quite a bit higher priced. And if I
went with an internal card, an Audigy SE @ 24 bit/96 Khz 100db S/N is really
inexpensive used.

There are a couple of non Sound Blaster cards that I am also wondering about.
One is an external Phillips PSC 805 Aurillium USB 2.0 24 bit DAC but I have
read somewhere that it actually operates @ 16 bits/48Khz. S/N of 104 db which
is good, but these are a little higher priced than others. And I remember
reading somewhere that Turtle Beach SC's are good for digital modes, think it
was the Santa Cruz model. These are a little higher priced than some of the
Creative cards, and while I am willing to save up for a SC that really does a
good job, I am not a rich person, so price is somewhat important.

I imagine a lot of the features that drive up the cost of high end Sound
Cards are those aimed at Hi Fi enthusiasts, such as surround sound, Dolby, etc.
I am not interested in this aspect, just Digital Mode decoding ability. So
I'd appreciate any input as to which SC I should be looking for. Also, is
anyone else using a FT-920 and using HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe) for rig control? I
am going to customize the interface I am building to meet my specific needs,
and was originally thinking that I could use the PTT from HRD via the serial
cable, but someone suggested that when running other Digital software and HRD
concurrently, I would not be able to do this, since the serial cable would be
tied up with HRD PTT. The Interface has a Opto Isolator on it, so I can use
this for PTT if necessary.

Tnks for any and all help and comments, es 73 de KCØPTO

[digitalradio] Updated APRS Multipsk : Mini Review.

2006-12-10 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien
APRS via Soundcard - No TNC.
Multipsk Reviewed:
By: Andy K3UK

Updated December 10, 2006.

I am happy to report that APRS via Multipsk works very well, this is a
good option for those that do not have a hardware TNC. Some aspects
of APRS in Multipsk are still in beta test, with the latest beta
release being 4.1.2. The software is by Patrick F6CTE.

I have operated packet with various TNC's over the years and also have
used UI-View 32 fairly extensively. I gave up using UI-View with my
PK232 because I did not want to use serial ports, all my digital mode
activity is via a PC-to-radio USB interface (Microkeyer). I did use
AGWPE with UI-View successfully but always found that to be a bit of a
pain to set-up.

Patrick's inclusion of APRS/Packet in Multipsk makes it quite easy to
get active on HF, or VHF APRS. It is simply a case of inserting a
couple of parameters (longitude/latitude, etc) and clicking on APRS
as a mode. No having to install other software or drivers. Don't
forget to switch to 300 baud if you want to use it on HF. Really, two
minutes set up time is all that is needed . I

Patrick's software uses UI-View maps (or other APRS maps) . This is
extremely useful, just copy your existing maps over to the
multipsk/maps folder, enable the maps inside Multipsk and you can view
the maps within Multipsk and watch as stations populate the map.

The weather information is graphically displayed as it is received.
It is a little different than UI-View , In UI-View the weather data is
displayed by clicking on a callsign on your map and the info pops-up
on the map. In Multipsk, clicking on the map will display all the
data received from the station , not directly on the map but in the
weather station graphic next to the map. Patrick added this feature
after I released my first review, a very nice addition and excellent
response to user feedback!.

The graphic display will indicate your distance from the stations and
includes a window that displays the raw text as it is decoded. APRS
in Multipsk also allows you to display on the map , all stations
that you have received since booting up the program , or display
stations monitored during a particular hour. Again, a very useful
feature. I do not see any way to easily list just the stations your
are receiving direct, versus those relayed by digipeating stations. I
also do not see the ability to filter the stations by a specified
radius from your station , but since I use APRS exclusively on HF,
I'm interested in seeing all stations regardless of distance.

I have a little trouble with some of the available windows for APRS in
Multipsk. The Packet APRS Frames decoding/coding window contains
some beautiful graphics and maps, but the window remains on top .
Thus, I am unable to do anything on my computer unless I remember to
minimize it.

Within the Packet APRS Frames decoding/coding window, there is a
button labeled transmission. Clicking on this brings up another
window full of useful packet parameter setting. I find myself
confused when I have this open. The options resp/beacon mail
buttons on the Multipsk main screen do not respond if these windows
are left open. I have to toggle back and forth trying to find what
mistakes I have made, what I have left open. The Packet APRS Frames
decoding/coding window also has an exit button that I have clicked
on several times thinking that it will take me make to the main
Multipsk window, it does but closes the beacon operations. I think I
am supposed to minimize , rather than exit. Maybe it is just me,
but I find it confusing.

APRS in Multipsk allows you to configure most packet/APRS parameters
such as wide, echo, trace, relay plus set Frack, TXdelay,
Paclen, and the usual things you would expect if you were using a TNC.
Patrick has added many options that will allow you to work APRS and
keep your station consistent with your region's expectations. As
previously mentioned, I use APRS on HF and the settings are not as
critical. Still, I have some learning to do about what is optimal.
APRS in Multipsk allows you to repeat frames received from others
stations and there is an option that will beacon your repeat
capabilities every minute. I'm a little nervous about doing this on
10151 in North America, I'm not sure if this extra traffic will cause
any problems or not. However, I did test the echo/repeat feature ,
and it works well. I like the audio beep that you can set to sound
whenever you receive a valid APRS packet frame.

The repeat feature, and Multipsk's amazing inclusion of Reed
Solomon signal identification (encode and decode) , has some
intriguing other possibilities. I have experimented beyond the
traditional APRS utility and have spent a few hours using APRS/Packet
on non-traditional frequencies. Recently I used APRS Multipsk in 80M
, I announced my frequency via several email groups. I thought it
would be useful to use the APRS features, including the maps, to alert
digital mode experimenters that I was on

[digitalradio] Update: Digital QSO Alert System (or visual cluster

2006-04-02 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien

The use of a UI-View server as a dedicated DX alerting
system seems to be evolving.

Check http://www.obriensweb.com/uiview.jpg
for a picture of some activity today. It would be nice to get more
activity.

It was first started as a way for stations looking for
experimental digital mode QSOs (like Feld Hell, Olivia, DominioEX, etc) to alert
people to the fact that they are "QRV". The UI-View message system lets
you send instant messages to individuals so that you can correspond and
coordinate frequencies and signal reports. UI-View, with sound enabled
will send a ring tone when you have an incoming message. It will also announce
the callsigns of stations that connect.

UI-View can be used to post DX "spots" that you
hear. Click on the map at the station' s QTH (I just approximate) , hit F5
to open the Object Editor, place the callsign in the area for Identifier, and
frequency/mode info goes in the comments section. Your 'spot" will appear
on the map in blue. Takes about 20 seconds, perhaps not as easy as a
regular cluster but it does work.

To connect you need the free UI-View software (www.ui-view.org) , it comes with some basic
maps, but if you want some better ones, email me and I can send you
some. The UI-View website has links to many maps. In addition
to setting your call and location, youalso need to enter
cluster.dynalias.org:1448 in the sever set-up area. If you need help with
that, email me., it is quite easy. You do NOT need to have a GPS .
You should have some close approximation of your longitude/latitude for entering
in the set up area.

Remember, if you are a APRS UI-View user, please
disconnect from APRS before you connect to our Digital QSO Alert System so that
your APRS stations do not propagate to our stand-alone system.

This is an old list and frequencies/times change but it will give you an
idea. Also, you might want to search for the free software MultiPSK it a
has a zilllion different modes and it will do the varying speeds and shifts
of RTTY. You can also use it to copy weather charts sent to ships. of
Winwarbler. Other software to try is MMVARI, also free, it will do PSK31,
MFSK, and RTTY but I think only ham RTTY. Winwarbler will do PSK and RTTY,
again a free program. There is one more free one, MMTTY, it does RTTY ONLY
but will do the wider RTTY shifts. Let me know if you need help finding
them and setting them up.

Your radio might do USB only, from what I have read. Is that correct? I

 There are
some commercial -non ham- RTTY signals that are in the clear ,
mostly from weather stations and ships, but not many. They use a
different setting from amateurs. Hams use a RTTY setting of 170,
commerical use 425 or 850. The software you mention may not support
 the non ham modes.

Hamscope does appear to allow those modes. Do you know where I can find
 frequencies for those
 weather and ship RTTY signals?

 Thanks, for your help.

Craig, the best Olivia frequency reference is at www.hflink.com just go there and click on the
Olivia frequency link. 500/8 seems to be the most common on 40M.

That's cool. MT63 works like that a lot, too. I'm sorry
about my negative remarks, I should have thought before posting. Those
opinions belong on that other list, and all the endless arguing about that
stuff is why I left this list a few months ago. I strongly disagree with the
existence of automatic ham stuff, but whining about it here won't help. I
guess I was a little angry. Again, sorry. Now, back on subject. Let's
say I want to play with some 500 hz Olivia tonight on 40 meters. What might be
a good freq. to start CQing, and how many tones are generally used? Looks to
me like anything over 8 is just too darn slow. What has been a sorta'
standard? Anyone? I think I may try between 7075 and 7080 with 500/8
sometime tonight. After dark, which will of course be a little later now -

[digitalradio] Optimizing Digital - Olivia vs Pactor QRM

2006-04-02 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien
 Andrew:

Can you describe your digital station setup, please?

As I set mine up I'd like to learn from what you
are using so that I may maximize effectiveness.

I am guessing that it is not merely the Olivia
1000/32 mode that allowed you to copy through the
Pactor QRM but also some elements of your setup
that provided exceptional selectivity and filtering.

Sure appreciate any hints!

Nope, nothing to do with me, it is all Olivia. I am using a 15 year radio
(TS440) and run Olivia with stock SSB filters. Software was MixW today
although I also use Multipsk for Olivia.

[digitalradio] Digital Cluster activity increase

2006-04-01 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien

Good to see some increase in activity on the cluster set
up for digital QSOs. W6RK and I have corresponded about linking his web
spotting interface to my cluster, that might be a good development.

FYI below is an example of who has logged in and also how
some have use the Talk feature to chat . The "visual spotter" has not be
used much but W3NJ did pop up on my map (Texas) this morning and we
worked each other on Olivia.

The cluster is accessible via telnet://cluster.dynalias.org

The visual spotter is accessed using UI-View and setting
up the APRS server to connect to 66.24.209.252:1448I have a dynamically
assigned IP number these days , so that could change. I have not tried it
but it is possible that cluster.dynalias.org:1448 would work too. If that
works, it will work better than the specfic IP nunbers, since they can
change.

Here is some cluster activity (not the spots
themselves).

[digitalradio] Another New Digital Mode!

2006-03-31 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien

Just received this and thought I would pass it along,
looks like a new oneto play around with! Software is available from my
site (see below).Announcing a new digital mode that uses the sound
card of your PC. This oneis DUSK-A1. developed by Walter DU1SK.
DUSK has some fundamentaldifferences from the other digital modes (PSK, MFSK
Olivia, etc) in that this modehas been developed primarily for the low bands
(80 and 160) with an emphasison grey-line propagated signals. DUSK-AI takes
advantage of AMI- AlternateMark Inversion . Many digital hams
will already be aware that AMI has a12.5% density minimum. The reduced
density minimum of DUSK-A1 creates amore tolerable AOA, or Angle of
ArrivalA position identification technology that detects the direction of a
signalreceived from a transmitter at only one point. In this system,
thetransmitter's location is determined from the receivers' antenna
positionand the AOA of the signals that are from the antennas. In practical
terms,grey-line like conditions are created regardless of the actual
position ofthe sun.DUSK-A1 grey line performance, and sun position
irrelevance , is alsoenhanced by the inclusion of CTA.
Continuous Time Oversampling A techniquethat simplifies the job of
synchronizing data generated from disparatesampling rates. The technique
resamples and synchronizes audio data asneeded, and it eliminates the
substrate noise and feedthrough problems. The beta version of DUSK-A1
also includes Enhanced Data Rates for GlobalEvolution an enhanced
radio modulation technique for GSM and TDMA(ANSI-136) networks that expands
radio timeslots . The expanded time slotsalso factor in enhanced daylight
propagation , especially on 160 meters. When combined with GPRS, it gives a
maximum performance with narrowbandwidth. The software does not have
full macro features or logging components as yet. Those wishing to test this
new mode may download the free software atDUSK-A1 from http://www.obriensweb.com/dusk.htm

Re: [digitalradio] More use of 30 metres

2006-03-28 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien
Mel, it makes sense to me. It seems that wide bandwidths are needed by
some modes under tough conditions but I am generally happy with modes that
take up as little room as possible.

 Hello,

Just to clarify my comment that I don't like the idea of one wide
band mode taking up the space which is being USED, by at least 20 PSK
users. As I clearly said, at least six QSO's were wiped out.

Is that not sufficient reason ?

Is there a digital mode group where a beginner is allowed to ask a
question on how to set their baud rate, or other digital questions?
It appears that basic questions are no longer allowed or tolerated on
this group. Questons such as these will be ridiculed.

[digitalradio] Olivia in MMVARI

Here is a message about MMVARI adding
Olivia.

I talked to Mori-san. He is interested in new modes, but
he is pretty busy on his business - probably he shall have no time for
programming till March. 73 de JA7UDE
Oba Hi - Any chance that Olivia
might be added?? MMVARI is a great working software.Olivia would
keep me from turning to MixW .TKS,Jerry W8KQ

Looks like it might be a possibility in a few

Interesting John, I am about 45 minutes drive from Fort Erie, I'd drive to
Waterloo for a $50 19 inch monitor, Yankee customs might be an issue though.

I don't know where you are located but around here (Kitchener/Waterloo,
Ontario) we have several different computer shops that are selling
monitors at bargain basement prices ie $50 for a used 19. I bought an
IBM P70 about 3 years ago for $125. Now they sell for $50. Everyone is
switching to LCD's and monitors are cheap!

  Subject: [digitalradio] Digital Modes
  Success On 160 Meters

If you want to have consistent successful
digital mode contacts of any reasonable distance you have to run a full size
antenna, either a 1/2 wave dipole or 1/4 wave vertical. Night time D layer
absorption on 160 meters is very unforgiving when using an 80 meter G5RV into
a tuner or 80 meter doublet shorted together into a tee vertical.
You also have to run more
power than the customary 25-30 watts, with 75-100 watts pretty much a
  requirement.

With an 80 meter dipole and 25 watts you
can expect to make contacts out to approximately 100 miles. A full size dipole
and 75-100 watts will allow contacts of up to approximately 500 miles. A one
wavelength loop and 75-100 watts will allow for contacts of up to 1500 miles.
a 1/4 wave vertical with 64 1/4 wave radials and 75-100 watts will get
  youinto the 2000-4000 miles range.

It's just the nature of the
  beast.

There seems many new digimodes and new ones comes almost every week.
What is good log program which knows new modes or modes can add
easily. QSL card/label printing also needed. Also adif import/export and
statistics. Is this right forum to ask this?

[digitalradio] CW ID of Olivia/Contestia tone setting

2005-12-06 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien

While we are all learning how to recognize the
difference in RTTYM, Olivia, MFSK16, and Contestia and the many variations in
tone settings, I have programmed my CQ macro to end with slow CW that will help
someone learn what settings to use.

I end my CQ with, for example, C 16 , or
R 32 , or O 8 . C for Contestia, R for RTTYM and O
for Olivia. I decided NOT to add the frequency since most can recognize
the width in the waterfall.

I'm trying to help a friend get his Icom 746 Pro ,
MixW, and Rigblaster Pro to work together. So far we have
got the 746 Pro to be read by Mix and for the rig to be
keyed when MixW is put in PSK transmit mode.
The PTT LED light on the Rigblaster comes on, but
their is no RF apparent. A support page at
Rigblaster says..."You should also see the RIGblaster
"level" LED light indicating that you have audio
coming from the computer at an adequate level to
  feed your radio via the
RIGblaster."The level LED does not light .
Rigblaster says "If the RIGblaster level light does not
light un-mute and turn up your sound card wave and master level
controls"We have done that and all levels are set correctly and
un-muted. Still no level led is lit.
Does anyone have any suggestion? I suspect
the on-board soundcard is not generating enough audio to drive
the rigblaster/746 but my friend said he had it

After taking part in a great deal of discourse among hams in USA and
worldwide, I am seeing more support for bandwidth-based regulations
that do not contain extremely-narrow-bandwidth segmentations (such as
500Hz and 200Hz). The wider bandwidth regulatory format is both simple
and flexible; it has a history of great success in many countries of
 the world.

Further, a power/bandwidth ratio for the lower HF bands seems to be a
more attractive alternative for present and future development of
 communications technology.

 ~3.5kHz at 1kW PEP (ham bands 1.8 to 21.35MHz)
 ~10kHz at 200W RMS (ham bands 1.8 to 21.35MHz)
~35kHz at 1kW PEP (ham bands above 21.35MHz)
~100kHz at 1kW PEP (ham bands above 28.5MHz)
~full bandwidth at 1kW PEP (bands above 148MHz)

Re: [digitalradio] Bandwidth-Based FCC Rules for USA

2005-11-25 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien
Seems logical to me. I think I saw comments here a few weeks ago that
suggested the plan was not a good idea. Why would this not be good ? I
think I also read that the FCC did not want to act on the plan, is the idea
still alive ? One thing that comes to mind is how if would be if American
hams could wander all over the place for digital modes but non-American were
confined.

Subject: [digitalradio] Bandwidth-Based FCC Rules for USA

Recently the ARRL filed a Petition for Rulemaking with the FCC.
 http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2005/11/15/1/
The Petition seeks to change from our present Mode-Based and
Content-Restrictive rules, to new Bandwidth-Based and
 Content-Neutral rules.

This is especially pertinent to USA hams interested in digital
communications and new methods of operating on HF.
Overall, it expands our freedom on the HF bands, and enables
technological progress in communications. One of the most dramatic
effects of these proposed new rules would be: more freedom for us
to combine texting, data, image, and voice on the same HF channel.
I am recommending support for new bandwidth-based rules.

As some of you already know, I have been a vocal advocate for
Bandwidth-Based Spectrum Management for the USA Amateur Radio
Service, as well as a promoter of HF communications.
Therefore, here are some of my comments about the petition at
hand, and some alternatives. As would be expected, the issue
is being hotly discussed in many ham radio forums, including
 QRZ.com http://www.qrz.com

 Change Needed Now
Bandwidth-based spectrum management is needed now, and for the future
of the Amateur Radio Service. No one loses any spectrum at all in this
change. Everyone gains more flexibility to operate.

 More Freedom for HF Operators
This is a good thing for ham radio in America. It brings us closer to
the level of freedom that is enjoyed by hams in other countries.

 New Petition Is Updated
The plan has gone through many changes in several years of
development. It includes some excellent new points that are very
positive for ham radio. I highly recommend, to everyone who is
interested, read the petition completely and form your own opinion.
Don't rely upon false ideas from those who simply sit on their
 keister and complain about everything.

 Good Bye Mode-Based Content Constraints
Most USA operators have never known anything else than being under the
thumb of our present system of mode-based rules and highly restrictive
mode-subbands. That system has kept us more tightly constrained than
any other hams in the world, hampering innovation, and in some cases
working against our communications with other countries. As
communication technology has progressed, the antiquated rules are now
at the point that they are antithetical to the very essence of the
 Amateur Radio Service!

 Technology Jail Breakout
To those who are content to live in a technology jail; to those who
resist any kind of change, even when change means more freedom... I've
got a simple message for them:
The hams of USA want freedom on HF like the rest of the world already has!

 Thank You ARRL
Thank you to all the ARRL staff, the committees, and everyone who has
worked so hard to put this petition together. Hammering out a good
compromise between all the different (competing) factions of ham radio
 isn't easy.

 No Boogie Men
Now, we see a few operators want to use this issue as a soapbox to
finagle a private frequency reserve for their favorite mode of
operating. Others are trying to twist this into their vendetta against
pactor or Robot Boogie Men. But this isn't about robots or HF email,
and it isn't about playing favorites. It is about providing band space
for everyone in ham radio today to operate freely with their choice of
method; it is about space for the new hams who will soon be on HF; and
it is about providing a foundation for the hams who will be on the air
 many years from now.

 The Real Issue
This issue is about bandwidth-based spectrum instead of mode-based
spectrum. Simple as that. It doesn't favor any particular mode or

 Better FCC Rules, More Freedom
Sure, the petition is a little complicated... FCC rules are
complicated. Let's focus on the facts. The fact is that this enables
us to move forward technologically, without being held back by
antiquated rules governing the content of what we transmit. The rest
of the world's hams already have this freedom. We pride ourselves as a
free country. This petition isn't perfect, but it is more free than
anything we have had in my lifetime as a ham.

Does This Petition Carry Us Far Enough?
I just read it... I personally think the segmentation devoted to
200Hz is a little too much and altogether unnecessary.
 Practical application of 200Hz

Re: [digitalradio] Re: 39 Tone DQPSK - ARQ Modem in PCALE with FTP - (Soundcard)

2005-11-23 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien
The only way I could even dream of justifying a 16Khz wide signal for
emergency communication, would be its ability to be copied at incredibly
weak levels, perhaps better than a factor of 10 for PSK31 or Olivia. Invent
that, then maybe I just might be pursued.

I have already expressed my skepticism of Walt's argument that a 16
Khz-wide signal constructed as he suggests would be legal, but lets
put that to the side for a moment. A critical test of any techique
or technology introduced onto the ham bands ought to be will it be
okay if lots of hams adopt this technology?. The answer for 16 KHz-
wide signals is clearly NO!!!. Such a technique would dramatically
reduce the QSO capacity of our bands; its introduction, legal or
otherwise, would be entirely irresponsible.

If the rationale is we need this for emergency services, then I
suggest that application be made to the FCC for a few small HF
segments dedicated to this purpose, enlisting support from DHS; if
the technology and need are sufficiently compelling, surely they
would not refuse.

And WinWarbler, which is also free.

WinWarbler's ability to monitor the band for PSK63 signals, extract
callsigns, and place them in an easy-to-monitor list is particularly
 helpful
for scaring up PSK63 QSOs. WinWarbler can be configured to route heard
 PSK63
callsigns to SpotCollector, assembling a long-term record of activity that
reveals the operating patterns of DX stations using PSK63.

 Dan,

I did not see Olivia listed in the post about digital sound files
link. So made a sound file and also a screen capture of Olivia 1Khz 32
 tones.

 http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/digitalradio/vwp?.dir=/Signals.src=gr.dnm=Olivia+1Khz+32+tones.jpg.view=t.done=http%3a//photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/digitalradio/lst%3f%26.dir=/Signals%26.src=gr%26.view=t

If the above links do not work they are in this groups Files and Photo

MORE possibilities to consider when we hear an Olivia-sounding signal on the

Santa gave me an advanced copy of the next version, It would be wrong of me
to post the updated version. I'll let the new version come out via the

things with, but to someone that was also a registered user.

Yes, see the softrock40 yahoo group and look for v5.0 ordering info.
You have to create an account at the site and login to order, then pay
with Paypal at the address listed in the mailing list. Order a QSD
board and one or more hi band and one or more low band boards. One of
 each is $34.

[digitalradio] More on the digital net idea

2005-11-03 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien
There appears to be good interest in a digital net. Opinion is divided
over 80M, 40M, or 30M as a good frequency to try.

Since I suggested a net that meets three time per week, how about this idea?

What about a net that has a net control from a different continent per
night/day. Perhaps Australia on one night, Europe the next and North
American the third night/day. It would be interesting to try pick a band
that would optimize world-wide check-ins but at a time designed to maximize
check-ins from the primary target areas. e,g, for the Australia net, we
would try to find a time that is likely to attract Kiwis and Aussies but has
a least a chance of weak signal propagation to Europe and North America.

Any ideas ?

The other thought is to simply have a net three time per week at , 1200
and 1800 UTC.

[digitalradio] Anyone for a Christmas Day digital contest?

Any suggestions for a fun digital modes related HF
contest that we can run on Christmas Day?

I'm thinking of something casual, easily scored,

I'm also toying with a New Year's contest where
people in 2006 have contact with people still in 2005, exchange would be perhaps
local time and date. Anyone want to take this idea and make it better

Last year I missed out because of a plumbing emergency involving

If I plug my paddles in to the rig without a keyer I can make one paddle

[digitalradio] Message from tim ab0wr re: Winlink-winkink 2000

2005-10-24 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien

My apologies, I
pressed the wrong button and deleted a message from a new member, Tim ab0wr ,
rather than approved it. Sorry Tim, welcome to the
group.

Here is Tim's
original message.

==
Rick, Please be very careful in accepting anything you
read from the WL2K people about how Winlink Classic works.
The problem with identification after a failed connection attempt
is not trivial when you are using an older modem. It is not, however, a
Winlink Classic problem, it is a *modem* problem. The AEA pk-232mbx, one
of the commonly used pactor I modems, does not provide a way to send an
indentification after a failed connection attempt in pactor mode. The
client software would have to put the modem in another mode, e.g. morse or
packet, in order to send an identification string. It would then have to put
it back into pactor listen mode. I believe the older Kantronics modems have
the same problem. My guess is that WL2K won't work any better with these
modems than Winlink Classic. Nor will Airmail. The answer
would be to rewrite Winlink Classic to work with an SCS modem capable of
doing the identification after a failed connect attempt.
Bottom line, k4cjx is *really* advocating banning the use of AEA
pk-232mbx modems and Kantronics all-mode modems from being used in
pactor modes since they won't identify at the end of a *MANUAL*
connection attempt that fails, let alone an automatic attempt.
Of course, this will push everyone into buying SCS modems.
If I can find it, there is a fellow in Europe that is developing a
rival to WL2K using mfsk16 or mfsk32, I believe. It is set up to work
with jnos or tnos or one of the variants and is written in Perl if I
remember correctly. If I can find his web site, I'll post it. While it won't
be quite as fast as pactor III it will be very robust, much cheaper, and
open source. I suspect you will see a lot of people moving to this type of
operation if he has time to publish it. tim ab0wr

Re: [digitalradio] I thought Auto Pactor was Illegal?

2005-10-23 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien

unless the automated station has a busy channel detector that detects any
mode in its passband and prevents TX until the frequency is clear for a
period of time.

OK, tech guys. How difficult would it be for a soundcard based software
application to detect a signal present within ,say, 500 hz of where the
waterfall is present . I have NO idea, but would have though the guys
bright enough to provide all the wonderful software might have an idea.

GEE, in the middle of typing this ..I was watching TF3GC in an Olivia QSO on
14105 and a PACTOR station started right on top of him.

Any way, I guess the hard part would be detecting real signals from
extraneous noise that the short-wave bands produce. But that noise tends be
intermittent on a waterfall's display, so maybe the way a real signal like
PSK31 or RTTY can be detected is via the duration of the signal burst.? As
I said, I have NO clue.

Re: [digitalradio] WHY ? ? ?

2005-10-23 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien

I'll guess..

PSK was the first widely used soundcard based
application. Almost everyone used 14070 and , if I recall correctly, it
was suggested that we use USB for that freq. Then for some reason we all
kept using USB. I think I remember this discussion back in the early days,
will see if I can find old messages.

[digitalradio] G3PLX on sideband choice

2005-10-23 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien

From the dude himself...
Andy K3UK

"You can use either upper sideband or lower
sideband when using PSK31, but there are two things to remember.

When tuning to a particular frequency, for a sked
or a net for example, the exact frequency specified for the net will be the
centre-frequency of the RF signal. If your radio is operating with upper
sideband, the RF frequency that it will receive will be the dial frequency of
the radio plus the frequency shown in the Rx Freq box in the PSK31SBW program.
This means that to operate on a given RF frequency for a sked, you need to
subtract the Rx Freq from the RF frequency to get the required dial frequency.
If your radio is operating with lower sideband, you should add the Rx Freq value
to the RF frequency to get the required dial frequency.

The other thing to remember when choosing which
sideband to use, is that it's important that both stations use the same keying
convention when using QPSK. In this program, the default is to use upper
sideband. If you choose to use lower sideband and you will be using QPSK, then
you must change the keying convention for QPSK, both when receiving and
transmitting. This is done by checking the Inverted QPSK box in the SETUP
menu.

The keying polarity does not matter with BPSK, so
it does not matter which sideband to use for BPSK, and the Inverted QPSK
checkbox has no effect on BPSK, but you should remember the QPSK polarity
problem because you may want to switch to QPSK during a contact, and if you have
the wrong polarity, you will lost the copy.

It is recommend to use upper sideband for PSK31. It
will be easier to read the waterfall display and decide which way to QSY if the
RF spectrum is the same way up as the audio
spectrum."

I would recommend the link below , after several

would be nice to have a few more ALE stations to experiment with.

  As
mentioned earlier,it has already been done. The hope is that Rick, KN6KB
will eventually share the routines he developed for SCAMP with other
  developers of automated software.

  If
you have ever tried out SCAMP you will realize that it is even more of a
watchdog than a human operator. A number of times when I would have gone ahead
and tried to connect on what superficially appeared to be a clear area, the
program would not operate. I would then notice a faint carrier within the
passband or other minor signal. It seemed to be able to ignore most
  QRN.

You hit the nail on the head. If you copied
PSK in the middle, you could have probably copied the same thing on the
sides. He was running too hot. Probably way too much drive and his
alc was showing. Always keep your transmitter to the point below the ALC
showing up, and you wont have that problem in your own
  transmissions.
With his, nothing you can do, except possibly
  tell him so.

Found the source. It was a PSK signal. Any idea what
adjustment mustbe made. There were no extra lines around his main trace

UTC there was some kind of digital call. It was not quite as wide as

one a bit stronger than the two at the side. Wouldn't you know it
came on right on top of UA0CCA. Any idea what that might
be. The three traces seemed pretty unique. Thanks and 73,

[digitalradio] Fw: [olivia] To OLIVIA users.-

Subject: [olivia] To OLIVIA users.-
HI all !Important notes for Olivia
mode: 1) It is critical that you have your sound card sample rate
calibrated (within +-100 ppm or so in transmit and receive modes),
otherwise you will lose the ability to copy other stations, as well as
your own signal will not be decoded. 2) It is HIGHLY recommended
to place transmitted signal within 1 kHz grid (for 1 kHz-wide mode), 500 Hz
grid (for 500 Hz-wide mode) and so on. This will significantly reduce QRM
for other stations which follow this rule. Otherwise, many operators WILL
NOT come back to your call. 3) Recomm. QRG's could be
14.108.50 to 14.101.50 .. When it possible maybe good to leave upper
"channels" (that means between 14.108.50 and 14.105.50) for the default mode
32/1.000 and down to 14.101.50 for 500 even 250 Hz. bandwidth but we all
must be the most accurate possible for setting our signals .. Saw a lot of
people (maybe myself sometime..) "overlapping" a 30% 40% even 50% of his
sigs on an adjacent channel .. Now condx. are as usual poor but some day
(when?)propagation may return into "normal" .. So maybe we can QSO only with
our neighbour and that only if the others can't beat his sigs. HI .. I'm
sorry about my poor English skill .. Can't do better .. Points 1 and 2 was
wrote by MixW authors .. Point 3 is an add. from me .. Of course all
suggestions are welcomed since I can be perfectly wrong !73 de Txema

But what do I need to transmit ALE? I can
receive it but I was under the impression that one needs a rig that can switch
bands and frequencies automatically while matching the antenna all at the same
time. Is that a totally wrong view of ALE?

[digitalradio] Fw: [RTTY] Slow FSK

Subject: Re: [RTTY] Slow FSK

 Ian,

There is an issue with microHAM Router 2.2.2 that causes the slow
FSK for users of microKEYER. Our programmer implemented an emulate
baud function in the OEM supplied USB chipset drivers. That function
was intended to make virtual ports using the USB interface behave more
like hardware UARTs and eliminate the need for patches like MMTTY's
 limiting speed.

Unfortunately, the emulate baud function is buggy and does not report
 buffer conditions properly (quickly enough).

Emulate baud was removed in Router 2.2.3 and subsequent versions.
You will want to upgrade to Router 2.2.3 or 3.0.1.

 Router 2.2.3
  www.microham.com/Downloads/urouter_release_02_02_03.exe

 Router 3.0.1
  www.microham.com/Downloads/urouter_release_03_00_01.exe

Either will work for you. Router 2.2.3 can be installed directly over
2.2.2. I recommend uninstalling Router 2.2.2, and rebooting before
installing 3.0.1 (although it may not technically be required).

By the way ... for anyone wondering if they have a Slow FSK
problem, this line is exactly 50 characters long:

THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPED OVER THE LAZY DOGS BACK

With CR/LF after each line, seven repetitions are 364 characters.
If your software is operating at speed a buffer with the seven
lines should transmit in 1:01 (one minute, one second).

 Hi All

I just got Phil's, GU0SUP post on slow FSK. I am glad you
 noticed this as
I also heard this a few times during the contest and wondered
 what it was
all about. I also had know idea I was in the same boat.

I am running an ICOM 706 with FSK using Writelog, MMTTY
 plugin and the
microHAM KEYER. I have just update the my microHAM USB device router
software to version 2.2.2 from a version 1 and was playing
 around with all
kinds of set and initially thought I had done something here.
  However I
come across a simpler answer as to why the slow FSK happens, I hope.

Joe K0BX posted this on the Writelog reflector that I think will help.

What you want to check for, is to go to the MMTTY version while in WL.
right click and go to options on the MMTTY plugin. Then to setup.

Go to the TX menu tab and bring up the TX option screen.
What you want to look for is the:
Char Wait and Diddle Wait slide bar box.
Make sure that the slide bar is all the way to the LEFT.
 Moving it to the
right will cause the output character rate to slow down.
 This was for slow
typest and was a feature on the UT-4B that was using with the ST-6.

So I checked all of my profiles as well as and re-saved them
 with the Char.
wait slider to the left in MMTTY as these are the same
 profiles used by the
 plugin in Writelog.

I am going to do an on the air test later on to check. If
 anyone has more
 ideas please let me know

 Hope this helps

 Thanks

 Ian
