[slim] Re: 24/96 support and Transporter

2006-07-25 Thread ajmitchell

I have to agree with FL here, if the high end DACs in the transporter
could be used for other components (via digital input) this would be a
killer app. for audiophiles I think. It would go a long way to justify
the ticket price...because you'd be getting an awesome music player and
awesome DAC as well.

Just a thought/

add a new increment which will be rather large as I have a large FLAC
 collection.
Yup, I had nearly 100 flac compilation disks disks to update. As I
backup to another set of disks I just did the main music set and the
backup at the same time, thus avoiding a large overnight backup across
my network.
The whole tagging process took less than 5 minutes. Unfortunately
Slimserver then took two hours to scan the changed files, but then that
happened in the small hours. The pain was so mininmal it was
non-existent. Probably took me longer to write this forum message.

I don't fully understand why you would want to keep your tags as Slim
as possible. There doesn't seem to be a downside to increased number of
tags. Replaygain, a non-standard tag, is almost indispensable. I also
find adding reviews and bios into the comment field a great way to read
info about the band/album on my Squeezebox as I am listening to an album
in the lounge.

Anyway, each to their own I guess. I hope Slim fix the issue for you
soon.

[slim] Re: Slimserver 6.3.0 and CUE Sheets / Images

2006-07-25 Thread Mr SA

I'm running the latest 6.3.1 on Linux. Still broken.

I haven't had this working since I retired my old server 18 months ago.
That was running on an ancient version that honoured operating system
specification of hidden files (dot prefix) and the database would not
index cue-sheeted mp3 files that were named with a dot prefix.

Is there any chance we can go back to simple funcitonality like that?
It worked. It was simple. It was logical. What business might
SlimServer possibly have indexing hidden files?

For me, this is all to do with gapless playback. The only reason i
have any cue sheets is to get gapless. I now have a legacy of very
high quality mp3 rips (Lame preset extreme/EAC) with cuesheets. The
answer is the difference between retranscoding and a feature that
should either work or at least show stable behaviour from version to
version. It strikes me that the development hasn't pinned down exactly
what certain functions are for.

FWIW, 6.3.1 does play my cuesheet files; it does honour symlinks in my
mp3 library. This is a good build. I'm just petrified that the next
build will break these things.

Me too, but I think those displays are a mistake. Many audiophiles

never have visualisations on and I turn off the display a lot of the
time simply because they are distracting. When this thing gets a
serious review, there will be comments about the sound with the
displays on and off. I would have preferred to see no display or a
small one and a much better remote with a display, it's more practical,
if a little harder to accomplish from the SB3 starting point.

I have to say, I'm not keen on the design, it's too fussy with loads of
buttons that will never get used. I have Copland gear that is clean
looking and functional and I wish it had been more like that. Overall
though I applaud Slim for the product - it's what the market needs and

I don't understand what you mean when you say transport-only option.
Surely if you don't need a DAC then a squeezebox IS that option. This
product is a serious DAC with a squeezebox built in.

As for the whole Sonos thing I don't get the appeal there at all. How
does that work if there's more that one person in your house wanting to
listen to different music in different rooms? You have to buy several
remotes at £319 each or wait and take it in turns? How's the jitter
from the Sonos' digital out compared to the '35ps at S/PDIF receiver'
quoted for this device?

Anyway back to the I'm really disappointed, what were you hoping for
for in this new product?

I think it's an exciting development and I'm seriously considering
whether I can justify it or not (a lot depends on the UK pricing). I
have to confess to being a wee bit disappointed that the pre-order
promo appears to be firmly targeted at new customers only, as most
existing customers are more likely to be thinking of selling a previous
model rather than acquiring yet another. I've still got a SB1 and my
current SB2 and I certainly don't need a SB3 and a transporter to go
with them. I totally understand why SD would want to target new
customers, but some alternative promotion for those of us who already
have SB2s or SB3s wouldn't go amiss surely?

When can we expect to see the transporter reviewed? Have any review
models gone out yet?

Surely if you don't need a DAC then a squeezebox IS that option. This
product is a serious DAC with a squeezebox built in.

Yes, but the SB3 form factor isn't right for me and it doesn't have a
linear PSU or professional socketry. I wanted an Audiophile SB3, not a
DAC with a squeezebox thrown in. I already have a very good DAC - and
it doesn't have all those displays and buttons I don't need and don't
want to pay for.

rickwookie Wrote:

As for the whole Sonos thing I don't get the appeal there at all. How
does that work if there's more that one person in your house wanting to
listen to different music in different rooms? You have to buy several
remotes at £319 each or wait and take it in turns? How's the jitter
from the Sonos' digital out compared to the '35ps at S/PDIF receiver'
 quoted for this device?

No, just the one remote, but I can read it from my sofa and it displays
album art, plus it isn't in the same box as the audio components and
therefore potentially affecting audio quality. You can argue whether it
does or not, but if there was no display in the transporter and instead
it was on a remote, then it definitely wouldn't be degrading audio.

If you think you can hear that sort of difference in jitter, then
congratulations. It's a lot lower than most highly regarded kit out
there and I suspect only a handful of people could reliably detect it.
I have no idea what the Sonos jitter is, but I am a Slim customer right
now - I have a modded SB2 feeding a Musical Fidelity DAC.

rickwookie Wrote:

Anyway back to the I'm really disappointed, what were you hoping for
 for in this new product?

As I said a clean-looking, uncluttered standard sized audio component
with a graphical remote control. The transport would not have a DAC,
but would have high grade power supplies, components and socketry. With
it I'd want a Sonos-like remote so I can browse music from where I'm
sitting without needing binoculars.

I guess I'm no longer in line with where Slim are heading. That's fine,
most of you are and the best of luck to Slim, I just don't like this
new component. To my mind the aesthetics and features are wrong for the
audiophile community.

Erm, that was my point. There's no way anyone on earth could hear that
jitter. I was suggesting therefore that there wasn't possibly going to
be any better digital output to any DAC from the Sonos' digital out.
But since this was not your reason for prefering a Sonos / High-end DAC

Since all the circuitry is in effect there in the transporter to
achieve the device that you want, and I would imagine exceed

[slim] Backlit Remote

2006-07-25 Thread rick's cafe

Kudos to slim on the new product... looks great and I am sure it sounds
great.. bit out of my current price bracket.. but I think it is a
testament to Slim for their commitment to listening to customers and
looking to cater to their needs.. the number of posts I have read about
high end products, rack mount designs is evidence of them listening

so about the remote I agree that a sonos style remote woould be a
great add on (even as separate purchase) and I have read a number of
recent posts from other users commenting on same and that they are
disappointed not to see this as a new feature. that said.. I do
like the way the new transporter remote looks and the added backlit
display could be a nice asthetic feature... Can Slim please post more
pics of the new Transporter remote so we can all take a closer look...
also will the new remote work with an SB3? and if so can it be
purchased separately?

It is only the jitter of the digital connection that is unassessed in

I'm sure they have, but the audiophile community is pretty picky about
stuff like that and you have to convince them that 2 displays are a
good move in a high-end player. Be ready for reviewers who are
convinced it sounds better with them turned off, after all these guys

I read these forums before deciding to buy, and I'm really glad that I
did. The troubles that you read on here are no worse than you find on
any wireless networking forum and given the number of computer /
operating system / router types and combinations it seems logical that
some sytems may take a little morre setting up than others. All that I
can offer in my experiance is that people reccomended me not to use
Belkin and to use a router instead of a peer to peer adapter. I used a
Belkin adapter on a peer to peer network to the SB3 and have had no
difficulties whatsoever. I bought a 20m network cable at the time
'just in case' and it still lies in it's sealed package. I would say
that even if I had had difficulties with the setup, that the audio
output quality of this device is totally worth the effort.

Just do it!

I'm pretty sure SD people got ready for complaints regarding the
direction their design is heading - there is no high fidelity device on
earth that wouldn't produce at least some negative comments. That's just
perfectly normal.

I'm not interested in built-in DAC either, unless it confirmed to match
Lavry DA-10 level - and it's not necessarily any worse, we'll see.
However I'm not going to reject the device just because they put there
something I personally don't need. I consider SD to be pioneers in that
area, and kudos to them for that.

Re: jitter. You don't have to have golder ear to hear that. If it's

it. However it doesn't have to - depends also on the spectrum.

[slim] Re: New Slim Devices Product? The Transporter per 6moons.com??

2006-07-25 Thread bprager

I love my various SB's and with some effort, have gotten a reasonable
WAF. But the one factor that continues to be a problem is the display.
As good as it is, (especially compared to other devices), it can't show
long album/track names without scrolling.
Yes, I know you can shrink the font, but then distance readability goes
to hades quick.
In classical music especially, many albums have the same starting
words. Even now, you have to do a lot of scrolling to even pick out
the right album and that factor more than anything has prevented me
from making the SB's the centerpiece of my whole house system.
When I saw the transporter, the first thing that struck me was - great!
- one huge display that could easily display any album/track title
known to man, at a highly readable font size. If you wanted VU meters
(let's be honest - how many audiphiles will give a damn about cute
graphics for the music), you could use part of the display just like
the SB's.
At least, you could have had the display for album/track searching,
then during playback, use 1/2 of it (programable would have been nice)
to show any info you want incl cute graphics if that's your thing.
To split it into 2 displays I think was a major mistake, and missed an
incredible opportunity to allow a level of interaction with a digital
music library backend that would almost have equaled a seperate PC
monitor display.
At the audiophile level, its trivial to run the SB3 thru a better DAC,
I've been doing it for years.
But only Slim can improve the display. Until it does, this device
doesn't improve enough beyond what I can put together right now.

Congratulations - this isn't for me (theres no way I could drop that much on a player) but it's a supurb product. With the stable, fast, Slimserver (lets hope) that is promised by 6.5 this will redefine the market.
I've never been a great fan of the industrial design of the squeezebox in either incarnation but this looks great. I love the curves on the case edge and whilst it wouldn't match any of my other kit it is more than any other the item to put on show. The row of identical buttons along the bottom don't suggest 'form follows function' has been the design mantra but look good.
Even the remote looks a cut above (and much more of a match for the SB3 than the current model - after market upgrade anyone?)The knob is cool, the twin displays will be full configurable (a new version of music info screensaver anyone?) and can be switched off for the minimalist look.
It's a lot of money but not for an audiophile product. Those connections parts and case will have cost a packet. Heres hoping for the trickle down product before too long - same case and controls, standard SB3 parts inside. 300usd ;-) I'll dream on. ...

Hi,

I have around, I dunno, 6 thousand songs at last count mosty from
ripping my CD collection, and I'd like to be able to play higher rated
songs some of the time.

However, I'm never going to get round to rating that many songs in this
lifetime!! So, I'm looking for a way to auto-rate all my songs. I can
then tweak anything I disagree with, but this would give me a good
starting point.

That way, I shouldn't get Nenah Cherry for example, any more when I
shuffle across my whole collection, as I'll be able to choose higher
rated songs (why on earth did I rip that CD anyway, it's complete crap
-- seemed OK at the time)

Currently I haven't rated anything, as it doesn't seem worth the
effort.

Help?

Oooo, BTW. I guess this would have to be from a site similar to
IMDB.com, but for music... if such a beastie exists. (i.e. Music
library, with ratings)

Another vote for the advanced remote. I like the look of the new
transporter, but probably couldn't justify the price.

I've got several SB's around the house, but as most of my kit is hidden
away in cupboards, the Sonos seems more appropriate to me. I do like the
Slim kit, though, and as I've got an investment in it already, what I'd
really like is an intelligent remote (with a display) that can connect
to my network (vi RF, wLAN or whatever) and allow me to remotely
control all of my SB's which I can then hide along with the rest of the
kit.

I would have thought most of the technology is proprietary perhaps it
could even be done with a Wireless PDA?

Re: [slim] Re: Thecus N5200 - fastest NAS available

2006-07-25 Thread Michael Herger

What's your point, man?

You asked So, what do you guys think about Thecus N5200? - my answer was
Just another NAS device. (hey, that's just my opinion - no offence
intended). To which you replied No, that's the point - it seems to be
significantly better then any other NAS..

So my point is: it's just another device, in another class than
Linkstation Co.: It's faster than the Linkstation, and it will cost a
lot more than the Linkstation. Nothing new, really.

I didn't want to be a smart ass. I just wanted to tell you why I don't
think this device anything special.

Why does it say on the display Squeezebox V2 when I have a V3 player?

Because the SB3 is a diguised SB2 - they use the same firmware, have the
same electronics etc. Theoretically it should display the correct player
type, but it's nothing to worry about.

Thinking about it some more, I'm really disappointed. I'm in the
minority I know, but right now, my money would go on a Sonos with a
Benchmark or Musical Fidelity DAC for the same price.

I second that. If the price follows the SB3 trend this unit will cost
around $2700-2800 here in Scandinavia. At this price it would have to
beat just about every DAC out there. There are some pretty terrific
ones at a much lower price. For me, this is going to be a tough sale.

2006-07-25 Thread tamanaco

bprager Wrote:
(let's be honest - how many audiophiles will give a damn about cute
graphics for the music), you could use part of the display just like

I think that a lot of your display concerns could be better addressed
with a graphical remote. You would no longer need to be in front of the
SB to read what's playing. As I mentioned before, a Wi-Fi/IR/RF SB
Universal remote control would allow you to control not only the SB,
but all your AV components. A color LCD on the remote would resolve the
distance readibility issues of the VFD that you mentioned. With a remote
with graphical interface the Classical Music naming issues go away. You
can get album art, lirics or any other album/song info you can think
of. Not to mention one's friends Wao! factor when they hear you sing
along with Pavoratti in Italian using phonetic lirics being fed to the
remote. I'd also like to get thumb wheel a la Ipod to scroll a little
more naturaly throught my music library. It can also be implemented to
support some of the plug-ins to allow you to create dynamic playlists,
display the weather... etc, etc. I want a Wi-Fi/IR/RF SB Universal
remote to be the center piece of my AV system as it would be only
component that'd need to interact from anywhere I sit in my one bedroom
NYC apartment. I'm sure it would make the place seem bigger than it
really is... I can already see myself sitting in the room with my white
throne as I build my new playlist.

Might upgrade my SB3 to it if I can save enough money.
But what about the low end.

If slim took the core of the SB3, maybe downgraded some components,
bolted some speakers on, enhanced clock/timer and the ability to run
off batteries.
Great to carry out into the garden, stick it in the kitchen or leave in

Well, I'd buy it. Probably buy 2 or 3.

[slim] SB3 has Spectrum Analyzer superimposed on menu items when connect to SqueezeNetwork

2006-07-25 Thread matharu

Don't know what happened. It started when I was using the SB3 to select
a radio station via SqueezeNetwork (SN). Suddenly the display filled
with the Spectrum Analyzer (SA).

The SA is only there while I'm logged into SN. It shows up behind every
menu display. The only time it doesn't appear is if I select the
Analogue and Digital VU meters in the screensaver. Any other
screensaver will activate but the SA appears on the screen
superimposed.

For example, the RSS ticker is selected as the screensaver to activate
when playing music. Well, it does activate but the SA appears
superimposed on it. In fact, as stated earlier, the SA appears
superimposed on every menu display.

Note that the SB3 works fine if I'm connected to the SlimServer. It's
only when I got to the SN does the SA problem appear.

I've done a reset of the SB3 by connecting the power to it with the ADD
button pressed on the Remote Control.

Can anyone help? TIA!

2006-07-25 Thread erland

I think allmusic.com or amazon.com are your best bet, but I haven't seen
any software that would retreive the rating information from these
sites. The problem is to retreive the ratings from the web, when you
have the ratings there are several tools available to set the ratings
in slimserver, tagging the music or where ever you want them.

Another problem is that these sites don't rate tracks they rate albums,
so all tracks on an album would get the same rating.

There is also http://www.last.fm, but it doesn't have ratings it have
statistics about number of times a track has been listen to.

Are you a developer who are ready to do some development work to
retreive the ratings from these sites ?

If you aren't I would suggest that you try to set the ratings manually
on per artist or per album level. I am not sure exactly which tools
that make this possible. I know the TrackStat plugin can do it on per
album level with slimserver but with that solution you will have to
click 4-5 times per album, so that might not be the optimal solution.

2006-07-25 Thread Mathiou

I agree 100% with you.

A high-end product is for audiophiles only and they will never be happy
with it !!!

On the other end, it would be really great to have a simple squeezebox
with built-in amplifier and integrated speakers (and maybe an FM
tuner), to move it from the bath-room to the kitchen, to the garden...
I cannot say that I would buy 2 or 3 of them but 1 for sure !

[slim] Re: 6.3.0: Many Duplicate Albums Listed (as well as duped New Music, Album Art, etc)

2006-07-25 Thread fairyliquidizer

Two reasons: I have had experience of programs complaining of
non-standard tagging in the past and also because any change will be
detected by my backup software and cause a needlessly bloated
incremental backup. That said I gave up and did the tagging which took
seconds I've just disabled my backup for now and will re-enable it once
I actually add some more music.

I still think there is something wrong when I have to manually
intervene to restore functionality that was previously there.
Hopefully it will be fixed soon so I don't have to remember to tag
future compilations manually.

All music must be enjoyed by someone so how would the rating system know
if YOU liked it or not? You could if you collected mean likeability
produce overall popularity - but is Britney Spears really 1000 times
better than David Gray based. No that idea is that you process
your.I am sure you have a couple months to spare don't you ;)
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25759. Alternatively, if
really had to, you could use itunes and rate everything as say 2* and
then alter each song as you play it. Just an idea

[slim] Another Wireless Connection Problem

2006-07-25 Thread DaveB

Equipment
SB3 with firmware V55
Speedtouch wireless router 716WL
Linksys Range expander WRE54G

The music server has a wired connection to the router which then
communicates (wirelessly) via the range expander to the SB.

The problem I am experiencing is that (randomly) the
connection will abruptly drop. There is no break up as I would expect
for marginal signal strength. Just a a complete stop. The track will
restart if the play button is pressed on the remote. The drop outs will
be anything from 5mins to a day apart.
No problems when used wired.

Can anyone offer any advice please.

That article also lets slip another detail which was discussed a while
ago - Slim's sales figures. The article states they have almost 50k
customers, if we assume an average of 2 players per customer we get
 100k players sold.
I don't reckon two players per buyer is a reasonable average. I've only
got one. Would love five, but can only afford one.

I reckon most punters would buy one. So I'm picking the average is more
like 1.1 - 1.2.

Anyone taking bets on this?

Is your SB a long way from the wireless router? Try putting it close
and see if the problem persists. You might be at the limit of your
reception area.

I've a better idea, I'll just spend my money elsewhere :-)
