[slim] Re: Squeezebox connected to 2-channel or 5.1/6.1/7.1 channel system?

2006-08-01 Thread Squirrel

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25858

Question: Squeezebox connected to 2-channel or 5.1/6.1/7.1 channel
system?

- 2-channel system
- 5.1/6.1/7.1-channel system

My main system is an Arcam AVR-250 AV receiver, Mordaunt-Short
908/905C/903S speakers connected with Chord Rumour 4 for the front L/R
and centre and 105-strand OFC for the surround channels, plus a BW
ASW-1000 sub. Current sources on this are an Arcam DV79 DVD-A/CD
player, Sony minidisc deck, Turtle Beach Audiotron, Pinnacle ShowCenter
and Rega Planar 3 turntable (with Pro-Ject Phono Box II pre-amp).

Might consider replacing the Audiotron with something like the
Transporter if a cheaper version becomes available though, I don't need
the uber-DAC in the Transporter as the one in the AV receiver is
excellent.

Bedroom system is a Yamaha DSP-AX620 AV amp with Gale 4/Centre 2/2i
connected with Audio Innovations Silver Bi-Wire (L/R), Silver Micro
(centre) and 105-strand OFC for surrounds. Sources here are a second
Audiotron, a second ShowCenter and a Sony RDR-HXD710 DVD/HD recorder
with Freeview. Again if anything went wrong with the Audiotron I'd
replace it with a Squeezebox (preferably in the 17 hi-fi form
factor).

Dining room system - Squeezebox 3 running into Audio Alchemy
DAC-in-the-box then into Yamaha DSP-A592 AV amp (one I had spare!),
Eltax Symphony 6/Symphony Centre/Millenium Mini speakers (can't
remember what speaker cable, think it's the Audio Innovations stuff
again though for fronts) Usually run this in Pro-Logic mode.

Garden - weatherproof rock effect speakers running off an old Sony
midi system (heavy smiley EQ needed on these speakers, fortunately
aforementioned midi system has 5-band EQ). Fed from tape output of
dining room system.

Bathroom system - Squeezebox 3 running into Kenwood KA-3020SE amp
(concealed) driving flush-mounted ceiling speakers.

Kitchen system - Concealed Technics SU-VX500 amplifier driving ceiling
speakers. Currently this runs from Zone 2 of the Arcam in the living
room, but I'll shortly be adding another Squeezebox using the AMPSwitch
plug-in to automatically select the SB when it's brought out of standby,
and revert to the Zone 2 feed when the SB is turned off.

So yes, one of my Squeezeboxen feeds a multichannel setup. Both
Audiotrons also do (and should these go kaput I'll replace them with
Squeezeboxen). The other SB feeds a 2ch setup... ceiling speakers are
great in the bathroom! Just need some whale song added to
SqueezeNetwork!

You can't reconfigure Slimserver for that (without a hack, anyway),
but you don't need to if you can create a link between the new disk and
the folder you have configured for music. Do you get to a command prompt
in any way, or is there a linking facility in the admin. program?

The idea is to connect the NV to a wireless router -in another room-.
No need for a PC, and the server program is run on the NV.

[slim] Slimserver losing all settings when powered off.

Whenever I power down the Qnap, on restarting it, Slimserver has lost

dynamic, and there is some kind of permanent save function in

[slim] Analog VU meters?

2006-08-01 Thread jonmyatt

Hi all

I've just bought a SB3 to add to my two old SB1 players.

I can't fathom out how to get the analog VU meters to display.

Should this be a Now playing option? Or is it a screensaver setting?

I'm using SlimServer Version: 6.5b1 - 8713 - Linux - EN - utf8 and the
player is on firmware 59, if that makes a difference.

Thanks,

Jon.

It is a bit crappy, in my opinion. If you remove the plastic film on
the black one, eventually, your fingers will dull the glossy finish
around the buttons.

I'm hoping the Transporter remote is of higher quality and that it

[slim] Re: My recipe for a cheap Slimserver

2006-08-01 Thread Gildahl

I had also observed many people trying to setup Slimserver on a NAS box,
and wondered about trying this. This idea certainly has some charm
(small, compact, quiet), but I found that creating a full-fledged PC
was both less expensive and far more powerful. It's amazing how much
PC you can build these days after scrounging around for spare parts.

Started out with
* Old (3.5 years) VIA motherboard sitting on my shelf.
* Old 4X CD ROM drive and 8GB HD from my box of spare parts.

Added
* 256MB PC100 Memory, free leftover from a friend's box of spare
parts.
* 200GB Seagate harddrive, $29 after rebates from a CompUSA midnight
madness sale.
* Case + 250Watt PS, $19 from CompUSA after rebates.
* 750MHz Pentium III processor, free from another friend's box of spare
parts.
* Ethernet card, free from another friend's box of spare parts.

$48 total

At first, I tried installing Free NAS with the intention of just using
this machine as a file server. Free NAS worked like a charm, but since
I couldn't run the slimserver on it left me wanting more. So never
having tried a full Linux distribution before, I tried installing
Mandriva. For some reason, Mandriva didn't like my machine, so after
doing some research I settled on SUSE 10. SUSE is not directly
supported by Slimserver, but ran smoothly on my machine. Getting
slimserver to work required jumping through a few hoops, but all the
information to do it was here in the forums. As an aside I have to
admit that I absolutely hate setting things up in Linux. Everything
seems three times harder than it needs to be (especially if your
working with a distribution that isn't directly supported by the
software you're installing). But once you have it working, it's fast
and purrs like a cat. You also have full-fledged server with which you
can do a whole host of other things. All-in-all it's a hoot for 48
bucks.

YES!

I got myself into trouble yesterday for daring to suggest this on a NAS
thread.

Why not take the cost and performance advantages of standard,
off-the-shelf PC hardware? I'm starting to think the term NAS is
kind of a misnomer. People get the impression it's a super-specialized
device, but if you were to make one out of PC components, it doesn't
make it any less of a NAS.

The thing that strikes me about current NAS devices is:

1. High cost.

2. Anemic processor.

3. Lack of flexibility/expandability.

The cost has been explained away by saying how convenient a NAS is,
that it's a turnkey installation. I guess this is my chief beef with
the concept. Philosophically, I've never been one to pay extra for
convenience.

The OS is something that's a little behind current NAS devices but I
think if I was to do this I might go with ClarkConnect. Apparently the
bloat is creeping in but it not only comes with Perl installed, it comes
with SlimServer installed!

Now the latest strike against my PC-NAS idea is that it might be noisy.
I was going to counter with a fanless VIA Mini-ITX version which would
still undercut a NAS by about $300 but I didn't want to rock the boat
too much. :o)

[slim] Re: The remote is crap!

2006-08-01 Thread shabbs

I've still got my original SB1 remote and it's neither damaged nor worn
and has seen consistent use. It has survived a move too. I too was of
the impression that the remote was flimsy and looked cheap, but at the
end of the day, it gets the job done just fine. I'd rather SD keep the
cost of the SB low by supplying a minimal remote and focusing efforts
on the SB internals. Also, the SB can be easily controlled via a
Universal remote. I now have a Harmony 880 that I use to control my SB
and barely touch the original remote, unless it's closer to me than the
Harmony. ;) Heh heh.

Cheers.

If SB1 you will have issues streaming 3 streams.

If SB2/3 are you doing the decoding of FLAC on the SB or on the server?
If on the server switch to on the SB to free up bandwidth.

I agree.

It's the SB internals I can't do anything about. The remote I can
always do something about - replacing it with a universal remote, for
example, which I've done (my Marantz RC1400 that came with my receiver
handles it just fine).

Some have suggested that SB offer upgraded remotes as an optional
accessory. I'm all for this, if you want/need an upgraded remote, pay
for it.

Offer SD-customized Nokia 770s, for instance. That would give a nice
counterpoint to the Sonos remote, and it can be used for general web
browsing and as a PDA too.

[slim] success with SB3, Linksys WRT54GL, DD-WRT, WPA2, and gentoo

2006-08-01 Thread cbueche

Hi,

a quick note to explain my setup and provide some guidance. Please note
I'm not involved with any of the products I do mention.

- internet link : ADSL 1200/200, to Swiss provider Solnet :
www.solnet.ch
- home server : Dell SC 420 running gentoo linux
- slimserver 6.3.1 with AlienBBC (to listen to the swiss-french radios,
www.rsr.ch)
- wireless router from Linksys, model WRT54GL, running DD-WRT v23 SP1
Final(05/16/06) std
- security mode : WPA2 Pre-Shared Key Only, AES
- 1 Slimdevice SB3 wireless white in kitchen, 9m away and 2 brick
walls
- 1 Slimdevice SB3 wireless black, living room 5 away and 1 brick wall
- kitchen loudspeakers : Logitech Z4 white, excellent sound for the
typical kitchen listening needs
- living room : NAD 3150 and MB Quart 280 speakers

So far, I have been extremely satisfied with all my vendors, from my
local ISP, through SlimDevices, down to the speakers. A recommended
setup !

The WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) is so high that the setup is now
marked as critical, and run almost all the time, minus our sleep. My
wife listen to Donna Belgium, quite a cool channel : www.donna.be. For
the french listeners being sick of poor FM sound and too many
commercials : go to www.couleur3.ch

Future plan includes a new Slim SB3 for sleeping room floor with active
speakers Edirol MA-15D.

Charles

Saving prefs is automatic, but there's a delay between making a change
and it being saved (something like 30 seconds), so if you shut it off
right after changing something it might not stick. The other
possibility is that the prefs file or directory has somehow been marked
as reasdonly.

There is definitely a place for pure NAS devices. By this I mean a
simple storage device that connects directly to your network to provide

external harddrive, and serves a very specific role. As such, a pure
NAS can be a relatively inexpensive, quiet, and cost-effective way of
putting shared storage on a LAN.

However, I'm with you on the misnomer thing. It is easy to become
entranced with these other NAS devices that add CPUs, memory, and other
PC like features. But once you go there, it's not just a NAS anymore
but basically a weak networked computing device with a big harddrive.
Sure there's a place for these as they are adequate to suit the needs
of many folk, but they can also be easily oversold as something more
novel and more capable than they actually are. I guess caveat emptor

I tend to pull the images myself, usually from Amazon - or a web search

The search, copy, resize and save process usually takes no longer than
ripping the CD and you get the right image. (It would take a while if

Your point is true, and a definite plus for a NAS device. They are
small, quiet, and energy efficient.

I think what we're saying here is that if power, flexibility, and price
are your objectives, then building a PC from surplus equipment can
fulfill this very nicely--sometimes to a degree that is pleasantly
unexpected. On the other hand, if small, quiet, and enviro-friendly
are your primary objectives, an NAS may fulfill these requirements
better--although the points made about low power boards can equalize
this greatly.

With that said, an older PC that runs in in idle most of the time with
no monitor and energy saving features turned on, can be made to be
reasonabley energy efficient. Maybe not as much as a NAS, but enough
to not noticably affect my electric bill.

I don't understand everyone's complaints about the remote. It's not
that much worse than most of the remotes I've gotten with any other
$300 piece of audio equipment. It is kind of lightweight but I haven't
seen many posts complaining that theirs broke in anyway. The button
layout isn't half bad (I've seen a lot of remotes with just a bunch of
square buttons evenly distributed across the remote where it takes
forever to find the button you want.)

I guess I'm just curious to know what kind of remote you think a piece
of equipment at this price point should come with. Some examples would
be nice.

Now I would agree that the transporter remote should be nicer and
apparently it is (backlit.) It's not the nicest looking remote but
often it seems that the more expensive something gets in the audio
world the more of a minimalist approach the design seems to take on.

I think this solution would cost around £100 - £150 and wouldnt

2006-08-01 Thread Gildahl

I also had a Linksys WMA11B as a previous poster mentioned. One of the
reasons I eventually replaced it with a SB (actually, 2 of them) was
because of its built-in display. The on-screen display of the WMA11B
was cool at first, but after a while it became annoying to have to have
the TV on all the time to use it. Sometimes I just wanted to play a
tune, and it felt like overkill to start the TV and let it warm-up
before choosing my music. Also, leaving the TV on all day when I just
wanted to have music on in the background (but still see what was
playing), seemed excessive. Especially since the bulb in my DLP rear
screen projector has a limited lifespan and costs over $300 to replace.

I actually wouldn't mind having a video display *option* to supplement
the built-in display; however, as others have noted, this kind of
feature is somewhat mitigated by its existing web-based functionality.
For example, if I want the multi-line interactive display akin to what a
TV might display, I can simply log in with my PSP and get those same
benefits as well as carry it around like a remote (who needs a Sanos if
you've got a PSP).

shared amongst all wireless devices so if you have a lot of wireless
clients using your network then there might not be a lot of bandwidth
left over for your SB3s.

A couple other tips:
- Check to see that you're running a recent version of Slimserver.
Fairly recent firmware updates have increased wireless performance.

- Try updating your access point's firmware. If it's an older access
point there may be some significant improvements available.

Good luck!

[slim] Albums with the same title and multiple CDs

2006-08-01 Thread Khuli

I did search the forums, but didn't really find a satisfactory answer to
listing albums which have the same title.

I have Show Artist with Albums enabled, but when browsing by album,
I'm getting:

-I Can See Your House From Here by Camel, John Scofield/Pat Metheny-

when what I want is to see them on different lines:

-I Can See Your House From Here by Camel
I Can See Your House From Here by John Scofield/Pat Metheny-

This also seems to cause the artwork not to appear when browsing by
artwork, as again, they are not listed separately, nor are all the
artists listed in the placeholder, so it just looks like the artwork is
missing.

For multiple-disc albums, I have it set to show them as one album.. but
it doesn't work. What does it look for to know if it's the same album?
Should the ID3 tags include Disc 1 Disc 2 etc.. I'm assuming not as
this would look like a different album name?

Thanks!

P.S. This is using 6.2.2 - is it defferent in 6.3?

[slim] Re: My recipe for a cheap Slimserver

2006-08-01 Thread Mark Lanctot

I've been pricing out what I'll call a MarkNAS.

The ultimate would be one that's fanless. I'm almost there, so close!

The main problem is fanless PCs are hard to come by. VIA makes several
Mini-ITX fanless boards.

It's the Mini-ITX cases that are a problem though. They are definitely
hard to find, and I'd like them to have two features:

- fanless PS. Yes, these are out there.

- 2 X 3.5 bays for a pair of drives in RAID 1. No, these AREN'T out
there. :-(

I read here
http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/index2.php?option=com_contentdo_pdf=1id=18
that FlexATX cases can house Mini-ITX boards, so with that in mind I
finally found a FlexATX case that has two 3.5 internal bays:

http://www.athenatech.us/a100.htm

Not the height of fashion but it prevents fall-apart. My main concern
is the fan noise - 2 tiny 6 cm screamers along with another tiny whiny
fan in the PS. Cheap though, $50.

In my search I came across something that really caught my eye:

http://www.ibt.ca/ICM168.htm

:-O Totally fanless, both board and PS, solid as a brick sh*thouse and
uses a Pentium M! There's one big catch though, only one 3.5 drive
bay! bawl There's a 2.5 drive bay as well, but I'd need a 250 GB
drive to mirror the main drive. Maybe I could use an external USB 2.0
drive, but that would limit RAID 1 speed, although it would still be
fast enough for SlimServer.

Also that doesn't look cheap.

So the search continues for a Mini-ITX/FlexATX case with a fanless
power supply and two 3.5 bays.

Note: I am limiting my search to items available to me locally or on a
national basis. I'm sure there is such an item somewhere in the world,
but I'm not importing anything.

RE: [slim] Re: The remote is crap!

2006-08-01 Thread Iain Shaw
I'm a long time fan of Slim - owning SliMP3 x 3 and a couple of
squeezeboxes. I stopped posting here after I got a cr**py response from
a long -standing list stalwart suggesting that I shouldn't post negative
posts for fear of upsetting the developers. Thanks Jack, it really
helped that. Shut me up anyway.

I've lurked ever since.

But I can no longer keep quiet. Slim stuff is cool, Slim stuff sounds
great and Slim stuff doesn't compete with Sonos.

A Nokia 770 is a really nice bit of kit and it's really clever that you
can control Slim with it...and I've got a 770 and I really like it. But
the Sonos controller is an awesome way to control music on a Sonos
system and the two things do not compare. The 770 can control your
windows and your sprinklers and that's really clever. The Sonos
Controller can't because all it does is do a really good job, as in a
better job, of controlling music on the system that it was built for.

counterpoint to the Sonos remote - in your dreams.

I'll buy a couple of Transporters because I want one for our Showroom
and I've got a client who is going to love it but I can't get too
sentimental about this product. It's still too geeky to put into most
of my customers. I sell a load of Sonos and I get NO service requests
on them. Like NEVER.

I've just reread this and I know it read like flamebait but it wan't
meant to be. It's a great product, I really like it. Multiroom audio
is both a passion for me and something that pays the mortgage. The Slim
product and the SlimServer software is not ready to be included in our
range of customer offerings.

Kudos to Sean and Dean and the team for the Transporter. Can't wait for
mine

2006-08-01 Thread mickweight

Hmmn, thanks for the tip, and you weren't stating the obvious as I
hadn't read up on creating objects from asp pages. However, it still
doesn't fix my problem.

I've experimented a bit more and I've made a valid xml file and stored
it in my virtual directory.

If i reference it from my asp page using a real disc path eg
c:\vdirectory\file.wma it successfully reads the file into the
DOMdocument object.

BUT

If i reference it fro my asp page using an http reference path eg
http://localhost/jukebox/file.wma it successfully reads the file into
the DOMdocument object. (it still reads ok from vb script in either
case).

I conclude that it has to be related to permissions or security. I'm
using IIS for my web server and I'm running windows XP on a home
network basis

Any other ideas?

thanks very much for your help by the way !

It seems to me the SB is only as geeky as you want to make it. I'm no
techno wiz and I found it to be pretty much plug and play. Set up and
use is pretty simple if all you want to do is point it to a music
collection (one that is natively supported), browse and listen. My
wife can't turn on a computer and she has no problems with the SB.

That said, I would be lying if I said I didn't think it would be cool
to have a Sonos type controller for the SB.

[slim] Re: Mass Album Art update suggestions

2006-08-01 Thread cshaida

I appreciate the advice. I've now gone through one by one (using album
art aggregator) each album and downloaded an image as close to 300 x300
as was available. In a few cases the the art doesn't show up in
slimserver. I've done a complete rescan and they still don't show up.
On further investigation the ones missing from slimserver are also
missing from a basic windows 'thumbnail' directory view (so I don't
think this problem has anything to do with slimserver). I've poked
around a bit and the 'missing' albums DO have the 'cover.jpg' file in
the directory.

Does anybody have any troubleshooting advice that I might use to figure
out why some (maybe 5%) of the album art isn't showing up?

There are several variations of JPEG files. Not sure if this is the
particular issue, but open a couple of them in Photoshop Elements or a
similar program, and confirm that their Mode is RGB color. Or perhaps,
you need to re-save them as Baseline Standard or Baseline
Optimized, rather than Progressive JPEG files.

Ok, I made some more testing. Here are the results:

Everything works fine

SlimServer 6.3.0 (with Firmware 55):
Player stops after the first song.

SlimServer 6.3.1 (with Firmware 55):
Player stops after the first song.

SlimServer 6.5b1 (nightly build from 2006-08-01):
Can't upload firmware to the player. The player doesn't show an error
but just returns to the screen where it says to press the brightness
button to upgrade... No idea what to think of that...

Before upgrading/downgrading I always stopped the server and deleted
~/Library/SlimServer and ~/Library/Caches/SlimServer directories.
(running under OSX 10.4.7 with all patches applied)

Well... is there any OSX user who's running SlimServer 6.3.x (with the
player firmware v55) where the player doesn't stop after the first
song?

Ideas? Comments? Shrieking epitaphs?

[slim] Re: Poll: What is your library size and hardware

2006-08-01 Thread deadkenny

Your music library contains 511 albums with 6928 songs by 226 artists.

Most are MP3 but I'm currently re-ripping my CD collection to Flac to
play natively on the SB3 and to convert as necessary to MP3 for my
iRiver H10. Many of the MP3s I've got are old rips and not very good so
it needs re-doing.

System...

Abit KT7-RAID motherboard
Athlon XP1400+ clocked at 2Ghz with 100FSB (thus clocking way over the
original spec of the board which was 1.4Ghz max!. The underclocking of
the FSB seems to do no harm. This machine flies compared to many
supposedly faster machines).
Aprox 500Gb storage made up of 3 IDE drives and one big SATA drive.
Might slap in another big SATA and get it up to 1TB some day.
1GB memory
Windows XP Pro SP2
54g Wireless

It's used as a photo editing station and media ripping device as well
as just plain slimserver. I rip my CDs with EAC

I thought about using my K6-2 400 Fedora server as that's always on,
but that's already being used as a mail, web and download server.

Was thinking about trying out the Wake-On-LAN feature but I think I'll
have to go back to wired ethernet on my slimserver box and not sure my
nic has Wake-On-LAN.

I am running SlimServer on a Windows XP box

I have created some playlists on a Mac (name is \\macmini ) that is on
my network. I created the playlists by dragging songs to a mounted
share of my music (on above machine)

I woudl like to share (and play) these playlists on my SB3's.

I have tried every variation I can think of for the path to the
iTunes Music Library.xml

\\macmini\Users\twylie\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml seems like
it should work...

All references to the songs in the playlists section of the xml file
all pointing back to Volumes\Workgroup.VAULT\blah

I'm new to *nix and I'm sure this is easier than I'm making it.

Any help or tips appreciated.
