[slim] 6.5.0 upgrade - incomplete librabry

2006-12-16 Thread blind1

Hi

I have been happily using 6.3.0 for many months now. Today I upgraded
to SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252.
Afterwards I was left with an empty music library so performed a Clear
and rescan. This ran to completion and although I had approximately
the right number of songs (according to iTunes), the albums and artists
were only displayed for about the last 60 albums I had added. The
artists were also missing. The paths to the music folder and .xml are
correct.

I'm running iTunes 7.02 without any problems, and I didn't have the
problems with SlimServer 6.3.0. I've performed two re-scans now with
the same results. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

2006-12-16 Thread Bruce Hartley

I'm looking to do the same thing.
My remote transmits RF and an RF receiver then transmits IR through IR
emitters.

Can the IR output of the receiver be connected to the headphone port on
the squeezebox.

if the headphone port can be made to transmit IR, surely it could be
made to receive IR.

Otherwise as noted above, I will have to put an IR blinker on the front
of the squeezebox and it won't look pretty.

Thanks in advance,

Your port should be defined in your slimserver.pref file on the
dbsource line. My port is not 9002 but something else as defined by
the MySQL setup.

Your Data Source Name will be slimserver unless you've defined
something else in slimserver.pref file.

You could also try the MySQL Query Browser
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/query-browser/en/index.html to ensure the ODBC
portion is not causing problems. When I use this on my setup I have to
define the following parameters:

Server host name (location where slimserver is running).
Port (already mentioned)
Username (dbusername as found in slimserver.pref file)
Password (dbpassword as found in slimserver.pref file)
Default Schema (slimserver unless otherwise definded in slimserver.pref
file).

[slim] How Many Squeezeboxes wiht NAS

Hello

recommended her a Squeezebox setup with a nas server.

Does anybody know how many Squeezeboxes can simultaneous stream mp3

She would need a setup of seven Squeezeboxes maybe half of them
wireless.

Eserim, I have a couple of questions for you.

1) What version of SlimServer are you running?
2) What is your backend database?

The reason I ask is my previous post assumed you were running 6.5.0 or
at least a previous version with MySQL. See
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SQLite for a history of the
backend options.

If you are not running MySQL you can search the forums here for an ODBC
hook into SQLite.

Sorry I didn't think of this sooner.

Generally the problem you run into is wireless bandwidth, not CPU.

3-4 wireless Squeezeboxes is pushing it a bit, but a good 802.11g

As others have mentioned, depending on the NAS model, the limiting
factor is quite likely to be wireless bandwidth, not CPU. If she's
building the home, I'd highly recommend wiring where-ever possible; you
might still have wireless for areas that can't be wired, but at least
you'll limit the wireless use to places where it's really needed. And
you can also save $50 per squeezebox if you get a wired-only version.

[slim] Audible difference? Transporter versus SB

2006-12-16 Thread nicoff

First post here so if I am asking for something that has been covered at
length elsewhere please excuse.
I have what many would consider a high-end audio system. I bought a SB
recently and love the idea transferring my entire CD collection to the
computer. I am using EAC to get FLAC files and streaming them to my SB.
I am transferring the digital data from the SB to a digital preamp
(Lexicon MC-1) which does the digital/analog conversion.
My first impression is that I sort of prefer the sound of my standalone
CD player (by a tiny margin)than when using the SB. (BTW, my CD player
is a Sonic Frontier CD-1, a tube player (yes, vacuum tube) that only
has analog outputs; no digital). So no D/A conversion is needed by the
Lexicon digital preamp when using the CD player.

I am going to assume that if I am streaming digital data to a digital
preamp the SB and the Transporter should sound the same. Am I correct?

Using analog output, would I be able to hear a noticeable difference in
sound (for the better of course) if I were to use the Transporter and
its analog output versus the SB?

Thanks to all who reply!

IMO you sould try the Transporter using it's own DAC eg. TP analog
outs

I have a Sonic Frontiers CDT and their SFD2 Mark2 with recent mods.

The TP is better than that by a WIDE margin. IMO

I prefer the TP to the SBLavry as well although that is a MUCH closer
call than the Sonic Frontiers.

The TP has a 30 day trial period so I think it's a no-brainer to try
it.

I may never play a CD again...I buy it , burn it, listen to
it :-)

There is a difference, but it's small (smaller than analog anyway) and
only your equipment and ears will be able to say for sure.

The Transporter has lower jitter and an overall better implementation
throughout - from more stable power all the way to better S/PDIF
conversion.

Using analog output, would I be able to hear a noticeable difference in
sound (for the better of course) if I were to use the Transporter and

You should be able to. It's a much greater difference than digital
anyway.

However it depends if the Lexicon converts incoming analog signals to
digital, applies processing and converts to analog again. It probably
does. This would make it sound different than going to an analog
preamp or direct to an amp. However, knowing Lexicon, these would be
high-quality parts and would not degrade the signal, plus this process
would be applied both to the SB and the Transporter equally, so there
should still be a difference. Only your ears can say how big a
difference, but with your equipment it should be appreciable.

In my system the difference between the Transporter and the SB3 analogue
outs is very obvious and I much prefer the Transporter.
However, with the Transporter you get the sound it gives, but with an
SB3 you can add a DAC to suit your own taste (and add a linear PSU for
more optimum output).

PS. No network player I've tried, using a variety of DACs, sounds as
good as my NAIM CDX. You would not believe how much this pisses me off.

PPS. This ought to have been posted on the Audiophile forum for best

If she's building a new house, have all the rooms wired with multiple
runs of Cat6 cabling. I'd also put in more traditional whole house
audio wiring in case the Squeezebox idea doesn't work out.

Then forget the NAS idea and locate a small server computer in the
basement near the low voltage wiring junction. With wired SBs and a
server of sufficient power you could run a couple dozen Squeezeboxes.

But Squeezeboxes really aren't designed for whole house audio, IMO.
You can do it, but depending on the design, it can be expensive or else
require bizarre wiring schemes.

Don't forget to disable replay gain and set digital volume to fixed in

 Thanks,

Yup, I think so (others probably don't!). The NAIM CDX just has more
weight than anything I've tried. The sound seems to be more solid,
deep, punchier and just attractive. I'm beginning to think I probably
like NAIM colouration.

It's possible that the difference to the vast majority of people would
be extremely minimal (and to most, probably not discernable at all) and
not worth fussing about but I'm a very fussy b** (possibly due to
the type of music I prefer and the way I listen to it).

And if skunk's post is referring to my comment (I'm not too sure), yes,
I have everything set up for audiophile listening (much as I like the
idea of replaygain... it just seems to destroy dynamics).

Re: [slim] Audible difference? Transporter versus SB

2006-12-16 Thread Peter

You probably mean that no D/A conversion is *possible* by the preamp...

IANAA (I Am Not An Audiophile), but I understand the attraction of tubes
is that they colour the sound. You won't get this colourization from the
SB or the Transporter so if that's what you prefer you'll have to wait
for the tube version of the Transporter. (well, if they can build a tube
CD player, why not a tube network audio player?)

I am going to assume that if I am streaming digital data to a digital
preamp the SB and the Transporter should sound the same. Am I correct?

Sounds reasonable to me, but IANAA...

Using analog output, would I be able to hear a noticeable difference in
sound (for the better of course) if I were to use the Transporter and
its analog output versus the SB?

I certainly hope so for the poor sods who paid $1700 extra for it ;)

I'm wondering if the Inguz eq might help to recreate some of the lower

[slim] Menu Mapper?

2006-12-16 Thread Chip Hart

I am helping a relative with an SB3 who can easily get lost
among the menus at times, creating a phone call. I was going to
quickly sit down and *draw* a menu map or use the CLI and
thought I'd just check to see if anyone has done any or part of
this previously.

In essence, I want to point at the slimserver and get enough in
return to construct something like:

  Browse -
Album -
  100 Miles and Running -
  etc.
Artist -
  etc.
Genre -
etc.
  Internet Radio -

Any help appreciated!

You're wrong about that last sentence. The Lexicon will convert the
analog output to digital, do its processing, then convert back to
analog. So your CD-1 is going D/A (in the CD-1)-A/D (in the
Lexicon)-D/A (in the Lexicon). The Squeezebox's digital signal is
going through the same Lexicon D/A as the CD-1, but skipping the first
two steps -- so it's pretty much guaranteed that the SB is more neutral
and accurate.

If you prefer the sound of the CD-1, odds are that you like the
euphonious distortions introduced by the tubes.

[slim] Concern with NV + Slimserver 6.5

2006-12-16 Thread hotmachiato

I have a 2TB NV with 1GB of RAM and am experiencing a lot of drop-outs
and stutter when using the web interface to control my slim devices (1)
original Slimp3 and (1) Sqeezebox. I need to be able to control the
slim devices via the WEB as well as play music on my computers because
I use a combination of Macs/XP/Vista/FC5 to play/manage my music.

I notice the drop-outs mostly on the Slimp3 box, but the Squeeze box is
not unaffected either. I use Moose on my Windows boxen, but on the
others I use the web-interface. As soon as I start using it, the slim
devices start dropping out music.

I am concerned because I am thinking of investing on a Transporter for
my media room and I smply cannot tolerate the drop outs. I am also
going to convert all my vinyl albums (+1200) and put them on the server
as well, and if things don't scale to +25k songs, I will have to look at
a different solution. Questions:

1. Is the Slimp3 cache simply not large enough?
2. Would the Transporter together with a Squeezebox (1 and 2) put more
strain on the already taxed server
3. I will only run FLAC on the Transporter.

I would liek to start some healthy discussions aroudn the topics
mentioned above.

Thankx,

Carl

Here is my config:

Squeezebox (firmware 40)
Slimp3(firmware 2.3)

Infrant NV (1GB RAM) 2TB of storage
Firmware v301c1-p6 (latest)
Slimserver 6.5.1-10479

Slimserver config:
Library stats (off)
Webserver forking (on)

Music (all ripped from my own CD's)
Encoding: FLAC AND MP3 (225kbps VBR)
Artists (570)
Albums (1311)
Songs (13022) mp3 (13000) flac

The dropouts are most likely due to small buffers in these older devices.
The SB2/3 and Tx have huge buffers (15-20x larger) compared to them
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?HardwareComparison). The Tx can
easily play a minute or two without being fed by the server.

1. Is the Slimp3 cache simply not large enough?

Yes.

2. Would the Transporter together with a Squeezebox (1 and 2) put more
strain on the already taxed server

Not that much. Web serving is of the most power consuming acitivities on
slimserver.

3. I will only run FLAC on the Transporter.

If you play FLAC to the SliMP3 and SB the server additionally has to
convert these to MP3 on the fly. This isn't necessary with the Tx.

Eh? I think they work quite well for whole-house audio. Much more
elegant than running speaker wire all over the place. And each room
has full control without running a separate control connection and wall
panel.

7 SBs off 1 server would work fine, especially if the majority of them
were wired. I would probably dedicate a cheap Dell to the server task,
to be certain there's enough horsepower.

[slim] Re: Need Help!!!

2006-12-16 Thread Mark Lanctot

First of all, why do you need a central amplifier? Each Squeezebox
will be in a separate room. Why are you taking the Squeezebox output
back to a central amplifier then back to the room where each Squeezebox
is? This doesn't make sense and you're going to have to run a LOT of
cable through the walls.

It would be better to have an amplifier in each room, and probably
wouldn't cost that much more.

Also there's no single best amplifier out there. If there was,
everyone would be buying it and there wouldn't be any choice.

Plus you don't say what speakers you want to use. Those will dictate
what kind of amplifier you can use. There are hundreds of speakers and
amplifiers available, of varying levels of quality, and going from a few
hundred dollars to as much as your house.

So I guess the question to ask would be - what's your budget? What are
the room sizes? (Large rooms need big speakers and powerful amplifiers,
small rooms not so much).

For smaller rooms there are some nice self-powered speakers out there -
search the forum for speakers and you'll find lots of recommendations.
For larger rooms you may want to go with bigger floorstanding speakers
and a large, separate amplifier.

If you're really intent on getting one amplifier for 3 Squeezeboxes,
you'll need a 6-channel amplifier (3 X 2). Look at amplifiers designed
for surround sound home theatre applications. There are lots of
companies that make these: Anthem, Arcam, Rotel, Bryston, BK, NAD,
McIntosh, Aragon, Theta, Adcom, etc., etc., etc. There are so many you
really need to define your needs and budget first.

Plus your ears may or may not like what someone else recommends! So
it's best to go to a shop and find out for yourself by listening to
some music you're familiar with. Make sure you listen to as many
brands as you can - there are lots out there and they don't all sound
the same.

[slim] Any Digital Piano Owners Out There?

2006-12-16 Thread fathom39

I've found some forums devoted to the topic but before immersing myself
in thousands of threads there I thought I'd check with the trusted
brethren here.

I'm considering buying one of these for my 14-yo:
Roland HP or KR-10x series
Yamaha Clavinova CLP series
Yamaha Nocturne
Other legitimate makes (Kawai, Kurzweil, etc.)

Any thoughts or recommendations?

This is way off topic, but here goes:

First, do you want a piano or a keyboard? Do you need 88 keys or will
fewer work? Do the keys have to be weighted and velocity sensitive?
Do you just want it to sound like a piano? or do you really want a
synthesizer that is controlled by a piano-like keyboard?
How much do you want to spend? Do you want a 'pro' or 'consumer' model
(pro models do not have amps and speakers, consumer models are plug and
play).

Go to your local bookstore and buy some magazines, Keyboard, etc.

I've had a Yamaha P-150 for the past 10 years. 88 keys, weighted action
that isn't too bad. Stereo speakers in the case. Midi in and out.
There's one on ebay right now with only one offer on it. It has a buy
it now price of $1,099.00. $500 plus shipping wouldn't be too much, if
you could get it for that.

Re: [slim] Perl_Tstack_sp_ptr

2006-12-16 Thread Jack Coates

RH9 has some issues, which is to be expected since support was dropped
by RH about 3 years ago :) I'm running SuSE myself, no problems.
Anyway, try running the /usr/local/slimserver/bin/build-modules.pl
script.

HI,
i've just installed slimserver on a redhat 9 box and i'm getting this

/usr/local/slimserver/CPAN/arch/5.8/i386-linux/auto/Time/HiRes/HiRes.so:

anybody any ideas?
ps This is after i have linked
/usr/local/slimserver/CPAN/arch/5.8/i386-linux-thread-multi

/usr/local/slimserver/CPAN/arch/5.8/i386-linux

which i had to do in order for it not to complain about missing
modules.

I can't see myself purchasing a squeezebox without the server software
working!

Cheers

[slim] Re: How Many Squeezeboxes wiht NAS

2006-12-16 Thread Schindler

I think she would have only one source - server or nas. So a nas is not
as powerful as a pc build as server? I think they should be able to
have all six or seven Squeezeboxes running at the same time...

I agree that this seems like a bizarre statement and can only assume
that Jim meant that SB's aren't really ideal for use as sources in
traditional, centralized whole-house audio systems. Or maybe I'm
reading him wrong...
