- Yes - I'd use it

iTunes has it's own way of writing gapless information into the MP3
tags. Now it may be using Lame to do the MP3 encoding based on the
custom options, but from a Slim POV, gapless playback is only supported
if you have used Lame to enocde your MP3's.

Try CD-ex or EAC. I've also got DSOTM in my collection and have not
noticed any gaps or glitches.

However I run my server with minimal plugins enabled and x-fade on.

2007-01-15 Thread NauticusLX

EnochLight, have you tried moving your SqueezeBox radio favorites onto
your N800? Are the urls compatible? How's the sound coming out of the
N800 stereo speakers? Do you have to be next to the device to enjoy
the sound? Do you have to be in a silent room to enjoy the sound, or
is "enjoy" even the right word? Is there a tone control for the sound,
or jazz/rock/voice presets or equilizer options? I'm hoping that if I
use it as a bedside alarm clock and I'm in bed next to it that the
sound will be enjoyable to some degree - is this a reasonable
expectation? And if I get up and cross the room, can I still "enjoy"
the sound, or is there noticeable falloff as one walks away from it?
I'd appreciate your comments.

I hope you didn't misunderstand my explanation as defence for the design.
I tried to explain what happened, so you can understand the situation and
fix it whatever way there is.

Mherger, you state: I've learned to sleep in trains, buses, at home, in
the field, hanging from some bolt in a vertical wall. Do you really
think that’s a reasonable comparison?

No, not at all. But you asked, why nobody complaint about that behaviour
before. I explained the reason for _me_ might be that I easily sleep in
difficult situations. As obviously does my GF as well.

Are you suggesting I shouldn’t unplug it every night?

No, you should. I fear you didn't read beyond that two lines about my
sleeping anywhere. There were 25 other lines which stated eg. "Get a timed
power switch" as well as "Don't use these robots" (as you called them) if
you fear them.

I'm out.

Well, I ran Ethereal (well, Wireshark) with 3 different scenarios. I
also unplugged any other devices I had connected to make sure there was
as little traffic as possible. The IPs and MACs are as below. Perhaps
this will help diagnose the problem? It LOOKS like the same symptoms
Christopher was having (tho' I'm not a network expert):

192.168.1.101 / 00:13:20:09:de:cd (IntelCor_09:de:cd) : The computer

1) SlimServer is on, my SqueezeBox is plugged in but off, and I press

2) SlimServer is on, my SqueezeBox is plugged in but off, and I do

3) SlimServer is on, my SqueezeBox is plugged in but off. I press

[slim] Re: Night terrors caused by SqueezeBox

2007-01-15 Thread NauticusLX

Wait, this may be it. I was just experimenting with the remote for the
SB-3 and discovered that, while listening to music via SqueezeNetwork,
if I choose the “Connect to SlimServer” option from the main menu, this
logs me off SqueezeNetwork. And if I do this while my PC is off (and
therefore SlimServer isn’t running), the display just goes blank, at
which point, I’m concluding, it’s logged onto NEITHER SqueezeBox nor
SlimServer. While in this state, can I conclude that it’s basically
“turned off” and won’t display any messages that are transmitted by the
SqueezeNetwork OR SlimServer? Then, to turn back on, I just hit the
left arrow, then select “Connect to SqueezeNetwork". Notice in either
the "power down" or "power off" routines I just described that the red
button isn't involved at all.

Might this be a reliable way to “turn off” the device, to avoid
receiving messages from the SqueezeNetwork during the night, and that
actually pulling the plug, or putting a granola box over it, may not
be necessary?

My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V4600 and I have a "remote in" connection on

sticking an IR emitter on the front of my receiver (so unsightly :)) If

I assume it's the CPLD which is sometimes mentioned. See here:
http://www.slimdevices.com/photos/inside_squeezebox2/, last photo. I
believe it contains the SlimDSP - all the codecs. At any rate, it
appears to be the chip after the CPU but before the DAC, which does a
good portion of the audio decoding and processing.

CPLD stands for "complex programmable logic device" - I would assume it
contains the SlimDSP which can be rewritten by changing the firmware.
Which is why the SB2/SBv3/Transporter is so flexible, there's no
hard-wired codec chip, it can be reprogrammed. Unlike the SB1 and
SliMP3.

Yeah, let's go with that. ;-)

I would assume the Xilinx gets reprogrammed with a reset as well, but
the advantage of reprogramming the Xilinx only is that it clears any
audio aberrations while preserving your networking settings - it's a
pain to re-enter that 63-character WPA passphrase!

If you try it you will literally see "Reprogramming Xilinx" on bootup.

I have a mixed wired/wireless setup as well, so I wouldn't expect that

[slim] First attempt at synchronized playback -> disaster!

2007-01-15 Thread CatBus

I have two players: a Transporter and a SB3. The Transporter is wired
(100 MBit) and the Squeezebox is wireless (802.11g, very good signal
strength, not shared with any other devices).

I tried to sync them for the first time today, and the result was
horrifying. There was a full second delay (and growing) between the
players, only seconds into playback. Skipped a track or two thinking
there may have been an initial difference due to one player already
playing when I synced the second, but nothing helped.

So I took a look at the sync wiki
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?Synchronization) and the
Transporter is not listed as a device capable of synchronized play.
Editing oversight or is there really a problem?

Are there any tricks worth trying to get this working better? I
testing using Ogg Vorbis files, so that the difference in network
speeds should have been even more of a non-issue.

[slim] Re: Night terrors caused by SqueezeBox

2007-01-15 Thread NauticusLX

Ceejay, turning off the power itself is what I’ll do. A practical
solution would be for the red button to be multi-purpose: press it to
put in stand-by, press and hold to turn it off. That seems like an
easy, win-win solution, I wonder if Slim Devices will take this
suggestion.

But I don’t know why some of you have to be so glib with the “being
ill” business. It’s not as if I’m fretting about something that can’t
happen. It’s happened, and once is enough. It’s not anticipation
anxiety that’s the issue, but actually being woken up in the middle of
the night. Wouldn’t that, realistically, take a toll on anybody? It
still intrigues me that this thing happened “by design”, because there
is no other appliance that I own, or have heard of, that has this
feature “by design”, a feature that actually wakes it’s owner up in the
middle of the night. The enormity of this circumstance is very
disturbing, I think. Like it’s happening in everybody elses houses and
it doesn’t bother them.

And contrary to what some have argued, this is not a good design –
since the scenario I’ve experienced should be impossible, so I just
can’t accept any reasoning to justify the design. Slim Devices can
email users any advice they want to, or in this case, why can’t the
user simply assume a server is down, if it is, as we universally do
when we can’t access info on the web?

Mherger, you state: I've learned to sleep in trains, buses, at home, in
the field, hanging from some bolt in a vertical wall. Do you really
think that’s a reasonable comparison? Are you suggesting I shouldn’t
unplug it every night? That it’s a reasonable measure of me as a man
that I should “tolerate” this phenomenon, whenever it may occur? That
I will in some way BENEFIT from this “feature”? Maybe I should sleep
on a bed of nails with kleig lights beaming on my face and def leopard
blasting – is that the idea? To what end can someone justify what is
obviously a design flaw?

Most significantly, how can this device be used, reliably, as an alarm
clock if there is some other process, outside the users control,
competing with this function? Hmm? Answer: it can’t be. Because a
sleeping brain can’t discern between the intended alarm and a false
alarm, and you’ll eventually learn to ignore it (like the boy who cried
wolf too many times), at which point it’s no longer useful as an alarm
clock.

Aubuti makes come technically good suggestions (thank you) but are more
“laborious” than I like. “Taking my PC out of hibernate mode so that
my Squeezebox can stay connected to it” would require the PC to be on
and may avoid the problem, but having 2 devices on when I’m asleep
rather than 1 is clearly not in the direction I want to go. Pressing
and holding down the red button to turn off is probably the best
solution, at least in theory. This might be possible with a software
upgrade. 3 cheers for my idea (a few others independently had this
idea).

Tyler, I’ve already considered draping some material over it at night.
And I discovered that an empty Nutri-Grain breakfast bar box fits
perfectly over the SB, and blocks all light from it. All future orders
of SqueezeBox 3 should be shipped with a complimentay box of
Nutri-Grain, for this purpose.

Catbus, your use of the term “paranoia” is inappropriate, I believe,
since I’m not expressing fear of something that can’t happen. It’s
happened. And the thing that happened is unquestionably undesireable.
No one would DESIRE this situation. It’s not like I’m carrying on
about an URL that doesn’t connect. If you want to psychoanalyze, panic
would be a better term to describe my initial post, rather than
paranoid. But “panic” simply means “sudden excitement”. Panic doesn’t
mean or imply “over-reaction” or “irrational response”, contrary to
popular belief. The whole thing had me “suddenly excited”, as it would
anybody who experienced the same thing. This is a legitimate “bug” and
I appreciate the bug report that has been filed, as you mention.

Melon monkey, and everybody, I did email support before I made the
initial post. It’s kinda funny how everybody assumes I didn’t. But I
knew a response from my SB community would be more candid, reliable,
and sympathetic, which it is. One developer, “Andy”, has made several
contributions to the thread, but he didn’t indicate how prevalent this
problem is – I was, however, able to ascertain this via the thread,
which was one of my objectives in posting. And there’s nothing
heretical about my statements on this thread, or other threads in this
forum, not even my reference to the N800, which is actually a popular
item in this forum, so I’m in good company in this regard. I say “not
even” because the N800 can actually be used as a companion device to
the SqueezeBox, thereby extending it’s depth and breadth.

BTW, I didn’t mean to suggest that a LIKELY course of action was a
lawsuit – but not because of any assertion that the issue is frivolous,
because

I haven't used them, but I can surely set them up/use them as needed.
I'm a software developer myself, so I understand the intricacies of
these sorts of problems, don't get me wrong. I just was under the

That is true, and there is even a question on that bug report if there
is more than one bug being talked about... without being able to
reproduce it, who knows... Hence why I ignore all but the packet
dump.

The only broken thing (from the SB anyway) that I see is the discover
from port 3483 to port 8900... that is backwards: it should be sending
to port 255.255.255.255:3483.

No idea why it would do that, though that still doesnt answer the "why
is arp not replying?" .. but since the bug is supposedly related to
shutting the server down, perhaps that is related.

What I see in the packet dump is that the SB is trying really hard to
connect to the server, getting no response. When rebooted it connects
to Squeezenetwork just fine, and when it is logged out of SN, it
connects to the local server.

tbessie, do you know how to use ethereal or tcpdump to create a packet
capture so we can see what it is doing?

There's already a bug filed due to this thread:

I believe a lot of the tone of the reaction was triggered by the tone

[slim] Re: Night terrors caused by SqueezeBox

2007-01-15 Thread MelonMonkey

Wow. I've not ever read a thread on any other forum where such an
obviously flawed "feature" has been defended and excused to this
degree.

It doesn't matter that the Squeezebox has no "off" - that's not the
point. The point is that its small amount of firmware should have
enough code in it to handle the power button on the remote. If a
message is on the screen, for whatever reason, pressing that power
button should remove it and put the display into either its screensaver
state (which needs a server) or blank (if the server is down).

That addresses the reasonable complaint about the power button.

The first issue should never have happened at all. The player, though
connected to the network is still in an "OFF" state. It was chosen with
the power button. When the server goes down in such a case the screen
should probably just go blank. Only pressing the power button should
then show the message that the server is down.

Come on, this is all really basic usability. The first post was
certainly over the top, but the resplies just added a ton of noise to
the thread when instead some recommendations could have been made for
the needed changes in the SB firmware and SN back end.

Back to the original poster... Write emails and call support and/or
file bugs if you want anything done or want to be heard. Posting in the
forum will just get you pages and pages of noise and a small chance a
nice Slim developer will catch your thread.

And never, ever post saying anything that can be construed as anti-SB,
even if you love the product line and only want to see it improved.
There are simply far too many people here that won't agree and simply
label you a heretic. ;)

[slim] Re: Free work done for SlimD people -- gonna fix bug?

2007-01-15 Thread JJZolx

Interesting philosophical question - If a bug is severe, but only a
certain percentage of people are experiencing it, then what kind of
priority should it be given? If it were a bug that was a show-stopper
for those people, then I'm sure it'd be given a much higher priority.
But there are workarounds and in the end the bug is mostly just an
inconvenience, although it can be _very_ inconvenient if you experience
it.

I think one problem with that bug is that a number of people have
mistakenly jumped on it and this either frustrates or irritates the
developers. This happens with many bugs, but that one is particularly
susceptible. Squeezeboxes that can't connect to SlimServer are a very
common issue, but for any one of dozens of reasons. Without digging
into debugging and packet sniffing and etc. it can be difficult or
impossible for the end user to tell the difference.

[slim] ipod, itunes & slimserver - getting them to work together

2007-01-15 Thread sea-speak

SO I have itunes and slimserver set up on a pc I built with a 400gb RAID
1, along with a small fast disk for OS/programs, etc. It is serving
music (everything is stored as apple lossless) to my SB3 wirelessly.
All of that works fine, thanks in part to this forum.

What I am trying to figure out - and this is going to be an
embarrassingly easy question for someone to answer - is the right way
to get itunes and slimserver to live together. the particular problem
I'm having is that I have run out of room on my ipod (again, all music
= apple lossless) and want to manually manage what I put on it. however
I find that if I uncheck the track box at far left in itunes to prevent
the track being downloaded to the ipod, slimserver doesn't see the
track either.

what I want is a way to manage what goes on the ipod while still having
slimserver 1) see *all* the music on my RAID, not just what's synced to
the ipod, and 2) pick up the itunes playlists. is the solution just to
tell slimserver *not* to 'use itunes' in the server settings? is there
an easy way to transfer playlists separately from itunes to
slimserver?

thanks much for any advice.

best,

Brandt

No doubt something obvious but please could someone help?

When I have the occasional weirdness that affects audio output, it's
resolved by reprogramming Xilinx - press and hold "1" on the remote
while unplugging and replugging in the power.

And when I say occasional, I mean once or twice in the 18 months I've
had it. This is not a regular occurance and you should not expect it
to be.

If it does happen with any regularity, then yes, do consider returning
it.

BTW I have not had the exact problem you experienced.

In my opinion, SlimDevices COULD do something to improve this. If the
user has opted for a blank screensaver for "off" mode, then I think
it's perfectly reasonable to assume they don't want the thing to
display messages at them when it's off. So it shouldn't. When the
user turns the thing on, and there's a server connectivity problem,
THEN it displays the message--because it's on and the user expects to
see messages displayed when it's on. Seems like a reasonable approach
to me.

Yeah, I agree with this in theory. Blank screen should be blank no
matter what. The problem in practice is that there is no other
indicator of status, hence all the people who've complained of broken
screens after someone sat on the remote and set brightness all the way
off.

[slim] Sudden Severe Clipping Distortion

2007-01-15 Thread Matt McGrath

Just bought my v3 Squeezebox and after 3 days of happiness, tonight I
had a weird thing happen.

Suddenly, in the midst of playing a music file from my iBook (host to
the slimserver software and to my iTunes music library), the sound
output became subject to severe clipping distortion. A bit like what
happens when the batteries run out on your guitar effeects box.

I got the same distortion accessing internet radio over squeezenetwork
(ie keeping the iBook out of the loop). And the remote control volume
control for the squeezebox had no effect at all on the sound (either
loudness or distortion) although the "thermometer" display showed it
attenuating as usual.

Putting the unit in and out of standby didn't help. In the end I had to
disconnect and reconnect the power supply to the squeezebox and that
fixed it.

I might tolerate this sort of "reboot" glitch in, say, a modem. But not
is something which has to work in my hifi. Apart from anything else it
could munge the tweeters on my Meridian active speakers. I've emailed
slim tech support in preparation for posting the unit back to the
retailer but as they've all gone home now I thought I'd just check to
see if anyone else had had this problem. I did a search on the forum
and it appears not, but let's see. Anyone suffered this one?

[slim] Re: What software can I use to add BPM info to my music

2007-01-15 Thread Hercules

Interestingly, while MixMeister has written all the BPM info to my music
files, it's not being picked up by SlimServer.

Having just looked at one of the files in a hex editor it appears that
the BPM info is kinda "double-spaced", so I'm guessing it's been
written in unicode?

Here are the hex values, and corresponding characters (where
appropriate) for a track's 126.02 BPM tag. Does my unicode theory look
correct?

54 42 50 4D 00 00 00 11 00 00 01 FF FE 31 00 32 00 36 00 2E 00 30 00 32
00
T B P M . . . . . . . . . 1 . 2 . 6 . . . 0 . 2
.

I assume that SlimServer supports unicode tags, and guess that the
specific problem in this instance is that the BPM tags are different to
my other tags (as they have been written using MP3 Tag following the
"ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1" format as recommended in the SlimDevices wiki) and
so are confusing SlimServer?

Any views on the best solution?

Find a different piece of software that writes tags in non-unicode
(whatever that's called!)?

Change all my ID3 tags to unicode, either using "ID3v2.3 UTF-16" or
"ID3v2.4 UTF-8"?

2007-01-15 Thread snarlydwarf

It looks like a curious bug but the real catch is that for some people
(like you), it happens a lot, but for others, they don't see it...
which makes it hard to diagnose.

Your first post implies it has been diagnosed, but I don't see that in
the thread there... did I miss a way to duplicate this? (Computers may
-seem- random and chaotic, but they are really, well, programmed and
predictable... so things should be reproducable... but finding the
exact conditions is the tricky part.)

Is there anything special about your setup that this happens?

Looking at the packet capture, I see this:

60: arp who-has 192.168.1.24 (Broadcast) tell 192.168.1.20

That is the Squeezebox at 192.168.1.20 saying, "Hey, my server was at
192.168.1.24, what is the MAC address of that?" And getting no
response.

Which would mean the server is no longer at 192.168.1.24, or the server
is broken... at the networking level. (Perhaps a firewall? But it is
long before any software from SlimDevices.. the TCP/IP stack on
192.168.1.24 should be responding all by itself.)

Intermixed with these, I see this:

Code:

12:50:47.658257 00:04:20:06:68:e4 > Broadcast, ethertype IPv4 (0x0800),
length 144: IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 33474, offset 0, flags [none], lengt
  h: 130) 192.168.1.20.3483 > 255.255.255.255.8900: [udp sum ok] UDP, length:
102

That is the Squeezebox, again. This time it is sending a UDP broadcast
out, saying, "Hey, anyone listening on UDP/8900? Hello?"

I have no idea why it is doing that: the usual "slim discovery" port is
3483.

On reboot, the SB in that log then connects immediately to
Squeezenetwork, I don't even see it trying to connect to a local server
until it looks like it is logged off SN:

Code:

  12:55:15.559548 00:04:20:06:68:e4 > Broadcast, ethertype IPv4 (0x0800),
length 60: IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 58, offset 0, flags [none], length: 4
  6) 192.168.1.20.3483 > 255.255.255.255.3483: [udp sum ok] UDP, length: 18
  12:55:15.560833 00:0c:76:bd:46:d5 > 00:04:20:06:68:e4, ethertype IPv4
(0x0800), length 60: IP (tos 0x0, ttl 128, id 21302, offset 0, flags [none]
  , length: 46) 192.168.1.24.3483 > 192.168.1.20.3483: [udp sum ok] UDP,
length: 18

That is the SB again asking "hello? anyone talking to me?" with a UDP
broadcast, but this time it is on the right port and gets an answer.

And oddly:

Code:

  12:55:17.778834 00:04:20:06:68:e4 > Broadcast, ethertype ARP (0x0806), length
42: arp who-has 192.168.1.24 (Broadcast) tell 192.168.1.20
  12:55:17.779664 00:0c:76:bd:46:d5 > 00:04:20:06:68:e4, ethertype ARP
(0x0806), length 60: arp reply 192.168.1.24 is-at 00:0c:76:bd:46:d5

Now ARP works and the server is responding. It is the exact same thing
that is at the start, but this time 192.168.1.24 feels like responding.

If the server responded like that at the start of the log, it should
have worked... but again, ARP responses are low-level IP stuff (well at
the border between IP and Ether layers...) and an application program
can't change the responses... only a firewall or broken IP stack should
break them.

Is there a firewall on that machine? What is breaking ARP?

[slim] Re: fast forwardng FLACs unreliable

2007-01-15 Thread rbl

I have tried it again and I am pretty sure I am doing the right thing
and it is still vey unreliable. I hold the FF key down for a couple of
seconds and it says "Now scanning 2x". If I press the FF key again for
a couple of seconds it scans at 4x and if I press play then it starts
playing. This is when it is behaving. About half of the time however it
does something unpredictable. The SB3 display always says that it is
doing what I would expect it to do, but in practice it is doing
something else. Often the music stops playing, sometimes it also jumps
forward in infrequent big steps every few seconds, sometimes it stops
altogether, and sometimes it seems to go to the beginning of the track,
and stops. Everything else works very well on the setup.

I would say the problem itself is 'severe', but priority is
'low-medium' because of the number of people it effects, as per common
bug database schemes.

Since it effects ME, of course I'd say it should be High priority. :-)

[slim] Re: Nokia N800

2007-01-15 Thread EnochLight

NauticusLX,

I got mine from CompUSA. Although their website doesn't show any, I
called them and they said they that had 4 in stock at my local retail
store (Dearborn/Detroit, MI).

I like the technology, and I've been playing with it since last night.
It's pretty cool as a Squeezebox remote using Ben's 770 skin, but the
amazement for me isn't as much since I've used my PSP in a similar
fashion (minus the touch screen) for quite some time now.

I'm on the fence whether or not I will keep this. CompUSA claims a
21-day return policy with no restocking fee, so I'll give it another
week or two before I decide. Here's the two main reasons:

1. It's pretty nifty and all, but web browsing isn't quite as
convenient as I thought it would be. It works a ton better than my PSP
ever did in WiFi hotspots, but it's still a little awkward. You
absolutely have to use the stylus to do any amount of accurate touch
navigation - unless you have twig-fingers. ;-P Also, although it
supports Flash and has Opera, sites like Youtube are absolutely useless
on the N800. Video playback is choppy and unwatchable, and this over a
802.11G wireless network!

2. The deal-breaker for me is that I cannot get it to work with my
T-Mobile Dash as a Bluetooth modem. I was hoping it would have
expanded my Internet surfing by this method, as my Dash - although an
awesome smartphone - is still limited buy its screen size when surfing
the web. I can get both devices to see eachother, and supposedly sync
- but whenever I try to get my N800 to execute the phone as a modem, it
fails. Of course, T-Mobile tech support is about as helpful as a canker
sore, and I've not had much luck getting a hold of Nokia for advice.
Anyone else try pairing a T-Mobile Dash + N800 for a Bluetooth modem?

On another note, I was able to get it to recognize my PC as a media
server via Windows Media Player 11's Media Connect. Streamed mp3's
without issue. Kinda cool. Video streaming wasn't as successful, and
caused the N800 to lock-up forcing me to shut it down. I'm not sure if
this was the files that it was attempting to play or what.. *shrugs*

I should also point out that the demo video file that came with it, a
Nokia camcorder commercial with Gary Oldman, had slight choppy
playback. I don't remember the Iceage demo video on the 770 having
this problem. You can see how it *should* look at the Youtube link
below. My N800 doesn't playback quite as smooth (I'm talking
frame-rate here; image quality is superb). Any other N800 owners out
there notice this?

Cheers!

Not really, that's a switch.

Get a router. Wired ones are dirt cheap these days - if you look
around hard enough you can find one free after rebate.

I have one I'm not using (Netgear RP614v1) but I doubt you live near me
as I have never heard of NTL as a cable provider. Plus shipping costs
would likely be more than you'd find one at any local computer shop.

If your receiver/ pre/pro /integrated amp has an IR receiver line in,
all you need is a 1/8" (3.5 mm) mono or stereo cable:

[slim] Re: Night terrors caused by SqueezeBox

2007-01-15 Thread CatBus

Trying not to jump on the sarcasm train...

It seems reasonable to me that:

1) Most people turn their home computers off when not in use, either to
save power or reduce noise at night. Those who have SlimServer running
24x7 are not typical home computer users, and SlimDevices should not
expect all users to behave like this.

2) If someone turns something off, they anticipate that it will, at the
very least, stop flashing messages at them, unless they've specifically
configured it to display, for example, a clock when it's in "off"
(standby) mode.

So, aside from the fact that the original poster misdiagnosed the
problem with a healthy dose of paranoia, that doesn't change the fact
that this does not seem to be a good behavior.

Seems like a reasonable approach
to me.

In the meantime, turning the brightness way down for off mode seems the
best short-term solution. But it does seem to be a bad design choice,
in my opinion.

[slim] Re: Squeezebox 3 and NTL Cable Modem

2007-01-15 Thread chobbney

I just got home and looked again at the cable modem. The other port
isn't an ethernet port - it's a USB port. Sorry about that - I don't
know what I was thinking. The cable modem is an NTL E08C007 so -
judging by the comments above - I'll need a router.

I have no need to go wireless (at the moment) and having a wire to the
Squeezebox will be fine, so would something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-8-Port-Ethernet-Unmanaged-Switch/dp/B87H94/sr=1-2/qid=1168886663/ref=sr_1_2/202-3642568-8379805?ie=UTF8&s=electronics
work fine? It looks like I wouldn't need to configure it.

Sorry for wasting everyone's time, by the way.

You can use SoftSqueeze to test it (after you install, connect to the
web interface and go to Help).

Also, Slimserver has not been security tested our audited, so you
might want to do some IP address limiting or tunneling to access your

I upgraded to version 6.51 (SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11067 - Windows XP -

smoothly. I use iTunes to manage the music. I have recently added album art
to all 18k+ files using mp3 tag. I also have an album.jpg and a folder.jpg
image file in each album folder (left over from the old way). In album /
gallery view when i do a clear and rescan, all my album art shows up.
However, a few days later - much of the art in the album view is missing.
When i check the file in mp3tag it shows that it's there. also if i click on
the album, the image is there. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason
as to why some albums have art and some do not.

I know album art has been a hot topic and i've done the searches but nothing
seems to answer my question. If anyone has any advice, or if this has been
fixed in one of the nightlies please let me know.

As long that machine is accessible to your network, then you can access
it with your SqueezeBox. If you are relying upon your internet
connection to access that box, just realize that you may be bandwidth
limited, and you'll possibly need to down-convert for stutter-free
performance.

[slim] Streaming over the internet

2007-01-15 Thread neyz

Hello to all of you !

I have just ordered a SB3 and was wondering if instead of installing
the Slimserver on my local windows computer and having to leave it on
when i want music i could make it connect to a Linux box i have outside
of my LAN network running 24/7 ? If yes, would i be able to refresh the
database from the SB or would i have to do it manually on the Linux box
?

Sorry if this question has already been asked but I didn't manage to
find anything.

Thanks in advance and good evening !

Fair enough. I realise that plenty of people (presumably the majority)
have no problems with wireless. But reading these forums reveals that
the overwhelming majority of connection problems are down to using
wireless networking. It just strikes me that if you have the option of
using wired, you may as well eliminate the potential problems that
wireless might cause.

Re. the unsightly cables: fair point, although I might respond by
mentioning out that a Squeezebox already has three wires coming out of
it (power plus a pair of RCAs), so one more doesn't seem like such a
big deal.

But to get back to the original issue: I'm genuinely interested if NTL
are now supplying cable modems with more than one ethernet port. So if
chobbney can confirm one way or the other, that would be great.

I looked at the wireless card inside the SB and there is nothing loose.
I don't really want to mess aroud with my working SB unless absolutley

[slim] Mac OS X, Flac and album art

2007-01-15 Thread yooper

I am in the process of encoding my ALAC to FLAC and am losing the album
art (as expected).

After adding album art, it does not show up on the main album page, but
will after clicking on the (blank) album.

How can I get the art to show up on the main album page?

Currently, I am using the latest version of Max to encode, and use
Media Rage to add album art.

I know there is new flac software allowing album art to show up, but
only see mention of this within Windows.

Any help would be appreciated.

I too have an SB in my bedroom and would also find it annoying to be

Syncing is only possible between SD hardware players and less reliable

[slim] Re: Night terrors caused by SqueezeBox

2007-01-15 Thread jmpage2

I think we are all missing something that the OP stated in one of his
posts a short time ago.

He indicated that he has a PC in his bedroom near the squeezebox but
that he has it hibernate at night.

I'm guessing that this same PC is the device that runs slimserver.

You've programmed your Squeezebox to connect to both your PC and to the
Squeeze network and then at night you hibernate your PC shutting down
the connection between the Squeezebox and the Slimserver software that
runs on your PC.

So then the Squeezebox is connected to Squeezenetwork and if that
connection is lost then it will report to you that it lost the
connection.

Solutions? Take your PC out of hibernate mode so that your Squeezebox
can stay connected to it.

Don't like that? Then as someone else indicated, either set the
brightness to off when the box is "off" or put it on an electrical
timer so that it's completely powered down during your normal sleepy
times.

I hardly think slinging insults, throwing tantrums and threatening
lawsuits is the best way to remedy situations like this. Your single
paragraph rant was pretty funny though, in a "this guy should be in a
straight jacket" kind of way.

My NTL cable modem has just one ethernet port (and one USB port, which
I don't use). Mind you, mine is an old ntlhome:120 (Ambit) modem. I
seriously doubt that more recent NTL modems have a router built-in, in
which case I think you're mistaken about these "unused ethernet
sockets". If you are sure there are some more ethernet ports on the
modem, please let us know what model of modem you have. Assuming there
aren't any extra ports, then you'll need to get a router.

(Incidentally, your posting implies that it will be feasible to use
your SB3 via wired ethernet. If that is the case, don't even *think*
about using it wirelessly).

Possibly, but I'd be surprised it will work.

I think you'll need another network card in your PC to set up an 'internal'
network with your Squeezebox and any other devices on it. Alternatively, get
yourself a router that has a 'WAN' ethernet port. Plug the cable modem into
the WAN port, and your PC / Squeezebox / any other PCs into the 'LAN' ports
on the router.

[slim] Re: Universal remote using Nokia tablet + Squeezebox

2007-01-15 Thread TechHome

I use the IR blaster plugin to turn a Yamaha receiver on & off with the
SB2. It works equally well with the squeezbox remote as it does via
the web interface, including the 770 as controller. This control
enables having the equipment in a head-end equipment closet type
installation. One limit I have with the Yamaha is that I do not have
discrete IR codes for "On" and "standby". The issue is that the SB and
receiver power can and does get out-of-phase. Other receivers (Denon,
et al) have discrete IR codes, that will avert this issue.

Note that in the custom-installer arena, equipment control via RS-232
or IP is greatly preferred over IR. The fact that the Transporter has
RS-232 makes it a much more attractive product for placing it under the
control of automation systems such as Crestron & AMX...but it also opens
the door to a Linux based control system with Slimserver and the
Transporter acting as the IP to IR and IP to RS-232 bridge.
