Dirk,

Are you still having trouble?

I think your external drives should show up something like /dev/sda1,
/dev/sdb1, and /dev/sdc1. I am not at my own SlimCD setup right now,
but I will tomorrow, and if nobody has sent you better help, I will
send you the mounting commands I am using myself.

Re: [slim] Help - Artists disappearing from Artist list but their albums are still present!?

2007-07-09 Thread cskwalls

I have noticed some strange things happening. First I noticed that
although I have 2 David Bowie albums on my PC, and they appear when I
browse by album, 'David Bowie' does not appear in the list of artists -
even though Slimserver says that is the name of the artist. When I click
on the artist name, there is nothing listed. I think this happened when
I added the second Bowie album. Today the same thing happened with Bob
Dylan. I rescanned the library because I had ripped another Dylan
album, and then noticed that Dylan had disappeared from the list of
artists - even though his albums are all listed, and the artist for
each one is still Bob Dylan. I had MultiLibrary and custom browse
plugins, so I removed those thinking that might be the problem,
rescanned the library and restarted slimserver...but Bob and Bowie
still aint't there. What's going on - any suggestions would be
 welcome!!!

As others have found, upgrading to the 6.5.3 beta release using the
link on page http://www.slimdevices.com/dev_nightly.html fixed this for
me

Re: [slim] Can't get Cover Art to work!?

2007-07-09 Thread kolvig

Hi again kdf..

Here is a new scanning and just to be sure, you also have the lines I
set into command prompt.

First I set the line cd \Program Files\SlimServer\server and enter -
secondly I set in the line scanner.exe --d_import --d_artwork
f:\musik\cd -wipe and enter and the scanning is on.
If I only use the second line, I got a fail and cant come further.

Re: [slim] [Announce] SlimCD 1.87

2007-07-09 Thread Michael Herger
Hi Dirk

3 extenal USB hard drives with what was my K:Music drive from XP Pro as
the root drive with short cuts to the other 2 drives.

The idea on the Linux system is the same as on Windows: create one main
folder you're using as the music folder in SlimServer. Then have
links/shortcuts pointing to the other drives. In Linux you do this by
creating symlinks. Go to your music folder and create a link running ln
-s /mnt/sdX disk1 - replace the sdX with the different mount points of
your drives.

Re: [slim] SB3 and Wake On Lan?

2007-07-09 Thread DavidKeasey

I just resolved a never-go-to-sleep issue, which turned out to be a
feature of the DHCP properties of the router. About every 30 seconds,
the router would poll my network, resulting in each computer that had
entered sleep-mode being reawakened. It didn't matter how long the
sleep delay was, within 30 seconds of going to sleep it was back
awake.

So, the solution was to put my home network on static IP addresses.
The router no longer polls to see if a new address is needed by any
device, and my squeezebox will now wake up the slimserver when I press
the power button.

Note: if you do go to static IP addresses, you will need to unplug
your SB3 from the wall-wart, then go through the menu to manually enter
the network connection information (SB IP address, gateway address, DNS
address, Subnet Mask, Slimserver Computer IP address, and all that
other stuff).

Now, if I could only figure out an easy way to get the SB3 to
automatically wake the Slimserver computer when it has a song to play
but the slimserver asleep.

[slim] Vonage Router

2007-07-09 Thread RalphO

I currently use my Transporter and Squeezebox on a home wireless
network. The router is a Belkin one. I am considering moving my
telephone service to a VOIP service and Vonage is the one that most
attracts me at the moment. However, doing so will mean that I have to
replace my Belkin wireless router with a Vonage one. I am concerned
that my current set up is working fine and do not want to introduce any
problems. So my question is are any of you using the Vonage wireless
router and if so is it working fine.

Thanks

Re: [slim] Squeezebox broken already? :(

2007-07-09 Thread stormy

Done, on its way back to Scan Computer, who said they will test it and
then replace. (after I got a ID from Logitech). If they find the fault
that is...

I am pretty annoyed to be honest as time and time again when things
break the user has to foot the cost of returning the faulty item. I
have lost count how much money I have spent returning faulty items over
the years.

Plus with the manual weighing tones, it cost me best part of £10 to
return. I know it might sound petty but its taken the whole shine off
the experience for me. I know things go wrong but this is the third
faulty product I have had to return in as many weeks.

First a faulty GFX card, then a faulty Hard Drive and now the SB3. They
say bad luck comes in threes. I need some good luck now. :(

- a) 100% of the time to Slimserver (on computer or NAS drive)
- b) 75% of the time on Slimserver / 25% on SqueezeNetwork
- c) 50% of the time on Slimserver / 50% on SqueezeNetwork
- d) 25% of the time on Slimserver / 75% on SqueezeNetwork

I guess I'm in the a group, thought that may change soon since I'm
about to sign up for the 30-day free Rhapsody trial. That could change
things for me a bit, but overall I definitely spend the vast majority of

Hi,
I have a similar but different problem. When browsing by Artist, most,
but not all, Albums are missing. The songs for the missing albums do
appear under All Songs for that artist.

When viewing the folder via explorer where the missing albums reside,
there are .m3u files from when these were originally ripped. Also, the
missing albums are FLAC's. seems to be a correlation btwn the missing
album and the presence of the .m3u.

never had this problem before.

running 6.5.2

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: How do you control your SqueezeBox ?

- I use the remote control and web interface approximately the same
  amount of time
- I use the web interface most of the time using a Nokia700/Nokia800
  or similar device
- I use the web interface most of the time using a PC/Mac
- I use a third party client most of the time (for example Moose,
  slimfx)

I would like to get some information about how most people control their
SqueezeBox. As an example to you use the remote control to select what
to play and never the web interface, or do you use the web interface
most of the time ?

The reason for the question is to get some more information about which
interface to focus on when developing plugins.

So what type of interface your are using when browsing, search and
selecting what to play.

Does F:\Musik\CD\Walter Becker - 11 Tracks Of Whack\Folder.jpg exist?

Could you attach that file to this thread?

After this scan, is the artwork view still only showing the question

You could try a program like Tag Rename to put the artwork into the
tags of each file.
This would get around the problems
of the non-latin folder names, and possibly whatever else is not
letting the Folder.jpg

I'll have to try something on my setup, as I really don't see why most

[slim] Recommendations for a small footprint server, please

2007-07-09 Thread johnhaines

Hi,

After a lot of frustration trying to get SS to work on my desktop after
upgrading to Vista Ultimate I have decided to look at buying something
small, cheap-ish and preferably quiet to use as a dedicated server on
my network.

I have looked at the various NAS options on the forum ... but I am
afraid that I have lost my enthusiasm for digging into code and hacking
boxes to get them to work. What I really want is something I can get off
the shelf and have a very high level of confidence that it will work as
soon as I install SS on it.

Does any use a Mac Mini, for instance? Is it up to the job? I wouldn't
really want to spend any more than the cost of an entry level Mac Mini
... about £400 here in the UK.
Are there other options with a similarly small footprint?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
John

For me, it's the remote almost 100%. Although having only a single-line
text display is definitely pretty limiting, I just hate using a computer
to listen to music.

I'd say both the web and remote interfaces are must-haves for your
typical plugin, however. Some people insist on using the web interface
even if they think it's clunky, probably because they can't deal with
the single-line display of the remote interface.

Question: How do you control your SqueezeBox ?

- I use the standard remote control or my own universal remote
  control most of the time
- I use the remote control and web interface approximately the same
  amount of time
- I use the web interface most of the time using a Nokia700/Nokia800
  or similar device
- I use the web interface most of the time using a PC/Mac
- I use a third party client most of the time (for example Moose,
  slimfx)

Web control most of the time because I am still exploring the wonderful
world of internet radio on SN.

Re: [slim] Vonage Router

2007-07-09 Thread Sb42

Hi Ralph,

We run our Squeebox on our wireless LAN which uses a Linksys wireless
router. Our Vonage service is provided via a Vonage router that is
connected via RJ45 to the Linksys. The home phone wiring is connected
via RJ11 wiring into the Vonage box. We then plug phones into any RJ11
outlet in the house.

The bottom line is that you don't have to throw out the Belkin

hope this helps...

Or the Windows feature of adding extensions to help you...

Ie, edit a file, save it as folder.jpg and watch the real filename be
folder.jpg.jpg Depending on your settings it may show up in a
file list in Windows Explorer as Folder.jpg and hide the extra .jpg
that is there.

There is a Show me the real filenames and quit hiding file extensions

That is a sneak feature that comes back to bite you in all sorts of

Mostly the remote, because (1) I usually run slimserver on a LinkStation
NAS, so the web ui is a bit sluggish, and (2) I usually don't have a
computer in the room where I'm listening. Actually, even when I do have
my laptop in the same room as the SB, I will almost always grab the
remote anyway.

That said, when I'm sitting at the computer in a room *without* an SB
and want to turn on some tunes in an adjacent room, or change what is
playing or how loud it is playing, I'll often open up the web ui to
control one of my SBs, rather than getting up and using the remote.

I'm having the same problem. I've tried reinstalling, tried deleting

Quoting kolvig [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

yes, but your log is showing no sign of the jpg files. They should be
there, but something in your case prevents that.

I'm inclined to side with snarlydwarf. I expect that you may have
created files with .jpg.jpg. By default, Windows will hide the last 3
letters. This means that if you are looking at the file in a folder,
the name will appear as Folder or folder, instead of Folder.jpg and
folder.jpg. If you rename to Folder.jpg, then what is really there is
Folder.jpg.jpg. The server will not work with this.

To turn this feature off, Look for Folder Options under the tools
menu in your windows folder, or windows explorer. Look for the view
tab, and uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option.
That will make sure that you see the real file name of your artwork
files.

You could also check from the command prompt with:
dir F:\Musik\CD\Walter Becker - 11 Tracks Of Whack\

make sure Folder.jpg apears. It is also still useful if you do find
it and attach it to the thread so that I can verify that the file
itself is valid.

[slim] Last.fm Signs Deal with Sony BMG

2007-07-09 Thread Phil Meyer
Just saw this on BetaNews.com:

Last.fm Signs Deal with Sony BMG
By BetaNews Staff, BetaNews
July 9, 2007, 3:04 PM

The reasoning behind Web radio service Last.fm's refusal to take part in the
webcasters' day of silence protest of exorbitant royalty fees that take
effect this month became clear Monday, as the company announced a licensing
deal with Sony BMG.

Under the deal, Last.fm listeners will have access to Sony's entire music
catalog; financial terms were not disclosed. The label said the service's
recommendation and tracking features are what enticed them to the bargaining
table. Last.fm, which is now owned by CBS and based in London, says its music
library is now the largest of any Web radio provider, including rival Pandora.

**apparently incorrect** Slim Devices wiki entry:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?NetworkProblemsBeginnersGuide

It incorrectly (apparently)states that port forwarding is not needed if
you are only trying to access SS within your private network. I figured
it must be something new, and did not set up port forwarding for either
TCP or UDP for either port 9000 or 3483.

At least for the Nvidia Forceware Firewall and my router combination,
this was necessary. As soon as I added those forwards, I was able to
connect via LAN and WAN where before I could not.

[slim] Added 2nd Squeezebox, it works fine but...

2007-07-09 Thread Denver_80203

The server only sees the new device. I'm having trouble following the
directions describing how to switch between the new Device that I just
named Living Room and the old device that will be named Garage.

So:
-I have 2 Squeezeboxes wirelessly connected to the 6.5.2 server.
-With the remotes I can browse music/internet radio on each device and
listen to something different on each device at the same time (cool!)
-But the server only sees/displays current activity the newest device.
(always a but, eh?)
?How do I switch the server interface from one device to the next to
load music, etc from there? I noticed a line somewhere about picking
from a list of devices but I can't find the darn thing.

Sorry if this subject has already been heavily covered.. I promise I
searched about here and I tried to read the networking help guide but I
didn't find a clear explanation.

Thanks!

The list of devices is in a drop-down at the top-right of the web page.

If you don't see this drop-down then is it possible that one of your
devices is connected to squeezenetwork?

If you can use the remote interface then the servers sees both of
them.

In the upper right-hand frame (pane) you should see a drop-down box
that displays both Squeezebox names in a list. Changing this selection
should change the device that the server web interface addressess. If
it's not visible, it might be that the browser hasn't refreshed that
frame yet. Reload the whole web page and it should appear.

Re: [slim] Recommendations for a small footprint server, please

2007-07-09 Thread Balthazar_B

If you're looking for something to run some recent flavor of Linux, you
might try:

http://minipc.aopen.com/Global/spec.htm

Now some of the bits on these machines *may be* too new for drivers to
have been written, but a little research should tell the tale.

If you're looking for something even smaller, there are many DIY,
low-power setups that would run Slimserver quite well.

Man do I feel like an idiot! There there is the Garage Device but, I
had it named Bob. Heh. That's easy to change.

Thanks to both of you for pointing out the nearly to obvious!

[slim] Softsqueeze sees server but wont play songs

2007-07-09 Thread mikezee

Hey - curious if anyone else has encountered this. Love my squeezebox
trying to run softsqeeze since I travel a lot want to listen
anywhere.

I can connect via an SSH tunnel to my SlimServer. No apparent problem
with the SSH connection. My music library (mostly flac, some mp3) comes
up on the softsqueeze. I can fully browse through the library. But when
I hit play, nothing happens.

On the SlimServer window (back on the home computer), it shows the
proper song playing -- looks like everything's working fine. But back
on the computer running softsqueeze, no music, the timer in the now
playing screen never budges off of the song's total running time, etc.
It does not appear to play regardless of whether the file is an mp3 or
flac.

The only other hint I have as to what's going on is this: When I go to
the console window in the softsqueeze prefs window I can see the
following, once for each time I hit the play button:

238875 [SlimTCP-1] ERROR player - strm IO error
java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect

Any ideas from more java fluent people? Thanks for any and all help.

Re: [slim] Recommendations for a small footprint server, please

2007-07-09 Thread googdot

i run slimserver on an older Mac Mini G4 (1.25) that I picked up
second-hand and can highly recommend it. A great cheap alternative!
Its run headless, and use VNC when necessary for updates, etc.

i upgraded the HD to 160GB and everything else is stock - even the RAM
which is only 512mb. been running well over a year now with no issues
at all. and best part...it looks good in the lounge too ;)
