Re: [slim] [Announce] SlimCD 1.87
Dirk, Ultimately, you are going to want to edit your /etc/fstab file to contain entries for each off the three USB drives you have attached (that is a lot of drives!) These text entries will look something like: /dev/sda1 /Music/diskA vfat defaults,utf8,umask=000,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 1 /dev/sdb1 /Music/diskB vfat defaults,utf8,umask=000,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 1 /dev/sdc1 /Music/diskC vfat defaults,utf8,umask=000,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 1 where defaults should include read/write permissions. You could follow defaults with ro as in defaults,ro, to restrict permissions to read-only. With these lines in fstab, the drives will be mounted when the system boots. Your uid and gid values might have to be different. For this to work however, you will have to have created these directories as root under /, or wherever you want to place them, example: sudo mkdir /Music sudo chmod ugo+r /Music sudo mkdir /Music/diskA /Music/diskB /Music/diskC sudo chmod ugo+r /Music/diskA /Music/diskB /Music/diskC I strongly recommend reading Peter W.s wiki page on mounting USB drives under Linux: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?MusicOnLinuxUSBHardDrives Now, you just have to specify /Music in Slimservers Music folder field. Since I might have made a mistake above your mileage will probably vary, but I hope it is helpful. I keep all of my music on a single 750 Gbyte drive. I am assuming you made an HDD install of SlimCD, rather than a frugal install? Otherwise, you will have to do some work to save these changes, to make them permanent. -Ron -- Ron F. *Squeezebox setup:* wireless SB3 -> CI Audio VDA.2 DAC + VAC.1 PSU *Main rig:* NAD 7600 + NAD 2600A -> Phase Tech PC-6.5 speakers *Headphone rig:* Headroom Max -> Sennheiser 650s *Music Server:* Nano-ITX computer running SlimCD + 750 GByte HDD -> Netgear wireless router *Other stuff:* NAD C542 CDP, NAD 6300 Tape, Monster 5100 Power conditioner, Outlaw Audio cables Ron F.'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5616 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36538 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Softsqueeze sees server but wont play songs
Hey - curious if anyone else has encountered this. Love my squeezebox & trying to run softsqeeze since I travel a lot & want to listen anywhere. I can connect via an SSH tunnel to my SlimServer. No apparent problem with the SSH connection. My music library (mostly flac, some mp3) comes up on the softsqueeze. I can fully browse through the library. But when I hit play, nothing happens. On the SlimServer window (back on the home computer), it shows the proper song playing -- looks like everything's working fine. But back on the computer running softsqueeze, no music, the timer in the "now playing" screen never budges off of the song's total running time, etc. It does not appear to play regardless of whether the file is an mp3 or flac. The only other hint I have as to what's going on is this: When I go to the console window in the softsqueeze prefs window I can see the following, once for each time I hit the play button: 238875 [SlimTCP-1] ERROR player - strm IO error java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketConnect(Native Method) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.doConnect(Unknown Source) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connectToAddress(Unknown Source) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(Unknown Source) at java.net.SocksSocketImpl.connect(Unknown Source) at java.net.Socket.connect(Unknown Source) at java.net.Socket.connect(Unknown Source) at java.net.Socket.(Unknown Source) at java.net.Socket.(Unknown Source) at org.titmuss.softsqueeze.audio.Player.connect(Player.java:340) at org.titmuss.softsqueeze.audio.Player.slimprotoCmd(Player.java:211) at org.titmuss.softsqueeze.net.Protocol.socketCommand(Protocol.java:421) at org.titmuss.softsqueeze.net.Protocol.access$400(Protocol.java:42) at org.titmuss.softsqueeze.net.Protocol$TcpSocket.run(Protocol.java:520) Any ideas from more java fluent people? If you're looking for something to run some recent flavor of Linux, you might try: http://minipc.aopen.com/Global/spec.htm Now some of the bits on these machines *may be* too new for drivers to have been written, but a little research should tell the tale. If you're looking for something even smaller, there are many DIY, low-power setups that would run Slimserver quite well. -- Balthazar_B Balthazar_B's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7366 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36679 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

In the upper right-hand frame (pane) you should see a drop-down box that displays both Squeezebox names in a list. Changing this selection should change the device that the server web interface addressess. If it's not visible, it might be that the browser hasn't refreshed that frame yet. Re: [slim] Verizon Westell Router -- Can't See Wired Server?
***Fixed my own problem, some of you may be interested in knowing what fixed it.*** - For some reason, my Nvidia Forceware hardware based firewall did not retain my port forwarding settings after restarting it (it was down while I configured my new router/modem). I am not a beginner, but have moved and have a whole bunch of new network hardware; I couldn't remember the port numbers, so I found this **apparently incorrect** Slim Devices wiki entry: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?NetworkProblemsBeginnersGuide It incorrectly (apparently)states that port forwarding is not needed if you are only trying to access SS within your private network. I figured it must be something new, and did not set up port forwarding for either TCP or UDP for either port 9000 or 3483. At least for the Nvidia Forceware Firewall and my router combination, this was necessary. As soon as I added those forwards, I was able to connect via LAN and WAN where before I could not. -- swank swank's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6164 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36594 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Last.fm Signs Deal with Sony BMG
Just saw this on BetaNews.com: Last.fm Signs Deal with Sony BMG By BetaNews Staff, BetaNews July 9, 2007, 3:04 PM The reasoning behind Web radio service Last.fm's refusal to take part in the webcasters' "day of silence" protest of exorbitant royalty fees that take effect this month became clear Monday, as the company announced a licensing deal with Sony BMG. Under the deal, Last.fm listeners will have access to Sony's entire music catalog; financial terms were not disclosed. The label said the service's recommendation and tracking features are what enticed them to the bargaining table. Last.fm, which is now owned by CBS and based in London, says its music library is now the largest of any Web radio provider, including rival Pandora. They should be there, but something in your case prevents that. I'm inclined to side with snarlydwarf. I expect that you may have created files with .jpg.jpg. By default, Windows will hide the last 3 letters. This means that if you are looking at the file in a folder, the name will appear as Folder or folder, instead of Folder.jpg and folder.jpg. If you rename to Folder.jpg, then what is really there is Folder.jpg.jpg. The server will not work with this. To turn this feature off, Look for "Folder Options" under the tools menu in your windows folder, or windows explorer. Look for the "view" tab, and uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types" option. That will make sure that you see the real file name of your artwork files. You could also check from the command prompt with: dir F:\Musik\CD\Walter Becker - 11 Tracks Of Whack\ make sure "Folder.jpg" apears. It is also still useful if you do find it and attach it to the thread so that I can verify that the file itself is valid. -kdf ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Ie, edit a file, save it as "folder.jpg" and watch the real filename be "folder.jpg.jpg" Depending on your settings it may show up in a file list in Windows Explorer as "Folder.jpg" and hide the extra .jpg that is there. There is a "Show me the real filenames and quit hiding file extensions" in Windows somewhere, i think the options for the folder view. That is a sneak feature that comes back to bite you in all sorts of ways (including mail worms that sent out stuff as "This is not a virus.txt.exe" that would show up as a txt file but really be an exe...) -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36576 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Vonage Router
Hi Ralph, We run our Squeebox on our wireless LAN which uses a Linksys wireless router. Our Vonage service is provided via a Vonage router that is connected via RJ45 to the Linksys. The home phone wiring is connected via RJ11 wiring into the Vonage box. We then plug phones into any RJ11 outlet in the house. Although having only a single-line text display is definitely pretty limiting, I just hate using a computer to listen to music. I'd say both the web and remote interfaces are must-haves for your typical plugin, however. [slim] Recommendations for a small footprint server, please
Hi, After a lot of frustration trying to get SS to work on my desktop after upgrading to Vista Ultimate I have decided to look at buying something small, cheap-ish and preferably quiet to use as a dedicated server on my network. I have looked at the various NAS options on the forum ... but I am afraid that I have lost my enthusiasm for digging into code and hacking boxes to get them to work. What I really want is something I can get off the shelf and have a very high level of confidence that it will work as soon as I install SS on it. Does any use a Mac Mini, for instance? Is it up to the job? I wouldn't really want to spend any more than the cost of an entry level Mac Mini ... about £400 here in the UK. Are there other options with a similarly small footprint? Re: [slim] Squeezebox broken already? :(
Done, on its way back to Scan Computer, who said they will test it and then replace. (after I got a ID from Logitech). If they find the fault that is... I am pretty annoyed to be honest as time and time again when things break the user has to foot the cost of returning the faulty item. I have lost count how much money I have spent returning faulty items over the years. Plus with the manual weighing tones, it cost me best part of £10 to return. I know it might sound petty but its taken the whole shine off the experience for me. I know things go wrong but this is the third faulty product I have had to return in as many weeks. First a faulty GFX card, then a faulty Hard Drive and now the SB3. They say bad luck comes in threes. [slim] Vonage Router
I currently use my Transporter and Squeezebox on a home wireless network. The router is a Belkin one. I am considering moving my telephone service to a VOIP service and Vonage is the one that most attracts me at the moment. Re: [slim] SB3 and Wake On Lan?
I just resolved a "never-go-to-sleep" issue, which turned out to be a feature of the DHCP properties of the router. About every 30 seconds, the router would poll my network, resulting in each computer that had entered "sleep-mode" being reawakened. It didn't matter how long the sleep delay was, within 30 seconds of going to sleep it was back awake. So, the solution was to put my home network on static IP addresses. The router no longer polls to see if a new address is needed by any device, and my squeezebox will now wake up the slimserver when I press the power button. Note: if you do go to static IP addresses, you will need to unplug your SB3 from the wall-wart, then go through the menu to manually enter the network connection information (SB IP address, gateway address, DNS address, Subnet Mask, Slimserver Computer IP address, and all that other stuff). Now, if I could only figure out an easy way to get the SB3 to automatically wake the Slimserver computer when it has a song to play but the slimserver asleep. Hi Dirk > 3 extenal USB hard drives with what was my K:Music drive from XP Pro as > the root drive with short cuts to the other 2 drives. The idea on the Linux system is the same as on Windows: create one main folder you're using as the music folder in SlimServer. Then have links/shortcuts pointing to the other drives. In Linux you do this by creating symlinks. Go to your music folder and create a link running "ln -s /mnt/sdX disk1" - replace the sdX with the different mount points of your drives. Instead I downloaded ORB, its free too. and on my PDA I type in http://mycast.orb.com and I can use my gpra connection from anywhere to stream directly to my phone from my home PC. works great. -- qbaser qbaser's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11975 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36136 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Announcement: a new PSP skin
Hi Tim, Thanks for the reply. Apologies for the need for detail but I cannot see the set cookie hyperlink on "PSP/home.html". I am not familiar with javascript but I can see the code to check if the cookie exists but not the hyperlink itself. Re: [slim] [Announce] SlimCD 1.87
Dirk, Are you still having trouble? I think your external drives should show up something like /dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1, and /dev/sdc1. I am not at my own SlimCD setup right now, but I will tomorrow, and if nobody has sent you better help, I will send you the mounting commands I am using myself. -Ron -- Ron F. *Squeezebox setup:* wireless SB3 -> CI Audio VDA.2 DAC + VAC.1 PSU *Main rig:* NAD 7600 + NAD 2600A -> Phase Tech PC-6.5 speakers *Headphone rig:* Headroom Max -> Sennheiser 650s *Music Server:* Nano-ITX computer running SlimCD + 750 GByte HDD -> Netgear wireless router *Other stuff:* NAD C542 CDP, NAD 6300 Tape, Monster 5100 Power conditioner, Outlaw Audio cables Ron F.'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5616 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36538 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
