KDF added the IE redirect at 11963 and the Maemo check was added at

anything after 12149 should be fine for your 770.

Re: [slim] Help - Artists disappearing from Artist list but their albums are still present!?

2007-07-13 Thread AndyHennah

Found it!
When I looked at the Artist Info for the tracks in Media Player (v11),
each one had the Album Artist set correctly but the Artist tag was
empty.
So my guess is that SlimServer doesn't look at the Album Artist tag.
The same problem is in 6.5.3.

I updated the Artist tags and did a rescan. Everything is as it
should be now. I can find the artist in browsing an searching.

[slim] New - Google Desktop Gadget for Slimserver

2007-07-13 Thread JoyrexJ9

Hi,

I've developed a Slimserver gadget for Google Desktop. This lets you
remotely control your Slimserver players.

# Displays the album cover art for the current track
# Supports multiple players
# Displays a popup notification with details of what track is playing
# Play, pause and skip tracks
# Switch the player on and off
# Change the volume
# Play a random mix
# Jump to the main Slimserver Web UI

This is version 1.0 so I'd be interested in people trying the gadget
out and letting me know if they find any bugs.

Download it from my website
http://www.bencoleman.co.uk/google-desktop-gadget-slimserver/

Cheers,
Ben

Okay, so the original intention here was that IE users pointing their
browser to Nokia770 would get redirected to Touch, as Nokia770's css
bruises IE's fragile consciousness.

BUT, some versions of the Nokia Opera browser send out a user agent
string that spoofs as IE (this is a common Opera trick), therefore
redirecting people actually using a 770 or 800 to Touch, which is no
good.

My argument here, take it or leave it, is that the first priority of
the Nokia770 skin is to support the people using the Nokia, and a
widget to push IE users to Touch is second priority.

Therefore, what do you think about backing out the user agent redirect
altogether? The problem I see arising is that even if we cover all the
current Nokia user agent strings, new versions of Opera on the Nokia
tablet may again change the user agent string to more closely resemble
IE, thus breaking this again.

cheers,
#!/ben

Is this anything to do with the fact that you have security setup on the
NAS box. Slimserver runs as a local system service and will therefore
get access denied when trying to view files on the NAS.

Have you tried configuring this to run with your account password?

Not sure about ITunes interaction.

Yes I should have mentioned that originally! However, I am happy to
carry on using unison until I find something better.

From what I've read from your link, rsnapshot isn't what I want. It
seems rsnapshot is great for, erm, snapshots. But snapshots aren't
backups.

I want backups for when a disk fails, and it seems rsnapshot, by
relying on hard links, is not intended to propagate data outside of the
original filesystem. If my disk fails I lose the original data and all
the snapshots, which is kind of disappointing! If I have got this wrong
then, firstly, I apologise, and secondly, I am sure you will put me
right :-)

I see unison as a replacement for disk mirroring, and in that context
it works well. I never write to the backup disk (other than indirectly
via unison) nor do I have any reason to, so changes being propagated
back isn't a worry.

I have had similar problems, while upgrading to SS 6.5.3 and iTunes 7.3.

Solution for me what to delete all Composer and AlbumArtist tags in

on the artist name, there is nothing listed. I think this happened when
I added the second Bowie album. Today the same thing happened with Bob
Dylan. I rescanned the library because I had ripped another Dylan
album, and then noticed that Dylan had disappeared from the list of
artists - even though his albums are all listed, and the artist for
each one is still Bob Dylan. I had MultiLibrary and custom browse

rescanned the library and restarted slimserver...but Bob and Bowie
still aint't there. What's going on - any suggestions would be

Download the file (it should have a .gg extension). Double click the

add it for you. Note the gadget looks best when it is detached from the

The basic idea is that the first run of the tool makes a copy of your

NigelMSB;214226 Wrote:
Why not check for Maemo and for Tablet browser? It's unlikely that

I'm going to read into the minds of the folks putting together the
Nokia Opera browser-- my guess is that one of the big complaints that
they get from users is that they get an error message saying they can't
browse (insert critical-to-user website address here) because (insert
critical-to-user website address here) parses the user agent string and
dumps an error if it's not IE. Different sites employ different methods
of parsing the user agent string, thus the best thing for Nokia Opera
to do is spoof as IE as closely as possible. At least, that's what I'd
do.

IMO, it seems like the Maemo Opera user agent string is a moving
target, so this is an uphill battle with possible breaks down the
line.

I'm still of the opinion that IE users are out of luck if they point
their browser to Nokia770/ skin, and its not a necessary function of
slimserver to redirect to Touch in these situations. It's a noble idea,
but if it incorrectly redirects (some) Nokia users, I'm not for it.

As for an official stance of not supporting IE on the Nokia770/ skin,
I'm pretty sure that is the case. There's a dev forum thread from last
year I could dig up that discusses just that...

As an alternative, I'm going to try to post to a Maemo forum sometime
today and ask if there's any part of the user agent string that I can
absolutely count on not to go away that identifies the browser as
coming from the Maemo browser (much as Nigel has suggested).

cheers,

1) I don't want to go the SlimServer 7 trunk route because then
everything is reliant on the PC being up and running (I'd rather just
lose the local stuff if it get's itself in trouble). How cumbersome is
the 'switching' process between SlimServer running locally and
SqueezeNetwork? Pain in the butt or not too bad?

2) Is there alpha search for finding things in the Rhapsody library (or
something else to make it reasonable)? In general is finding a specific
track out there in Rhapsodyland (assuming you know the artist and album)
a managable task, or an all-nighter?

Thanks again for the feedback.

[slim] New folder/files

2007-07-13 Thread 7eva

I wondering if there any posibility with SlimServer to add only new
folder/files to existing library without scanning all the files again
?

If I choose look for new and changed music it's take almost the same
time as clear library and rescan everything. It's waste of time in
case when I want to add something new.

Will be good if there will be option to inject new folder manually
into database .

Hi Andy,

From the streaming info the radio is broadcasted in content type MP3S.
However even if the SB is a 2 channel media it should be able to open
the stream as the stream is claimed compatible with any other
players...

Quote from Zenon-Media :

Zenon-Media joined the Fraunhofer Institut of Erlangen to launch for
the NAB exhibition as a world innovation a surround 5.1 stream based on
the MP3 SX technology. The stream is compatible with all standard mp3
players and can be listened from everybody.

They claimed...

Anyway thanks for your enlightning.

Cheers !

I don't see where that device can play streams from Slimserver, aside
from stream.mp3, but then you need a laptop to choose music, and you
might as well just use Softsqueeze.

If you only want Internet radio, that's fine, but a lot of us prefer

Thanks Andy It worked all right now after editing types.conf, it took
me a little long my server is on ...Mac, it wasnot easy to find the

Now my output is Dolby Prologic on 5 channels, the SB SPDIF output goes
from the SB to an audio/video HUB, I guess conversion are ongoing all
thru, but the restitution is fantastic (actually my Hub is a high end

Regarding the AC3 decoding in the SB, could this be only achieved with

Could be - although they're light on the specifics, they do say:

MP3 Surround enables high-quality surround sound at bit rates comparable
to those currently used to encode stereo MP3 material.

If it can be done at comparable bitrates then they can't possibly be
including additional full-frequency channels.

However if it was merely phase cues then the bitrate would be
-identical- since these modifications can be accomplished in the analog
domain and data isn't added. merely modified.

[slim] very slow response time when browsing genres

2007-07-13 Thread wotuzu17

Hi,

I just upgraded Slimserver 6.3 to 6.5.3, using the Suse10.1 system's
mysql server.
My Server is a VIA C3 / 1Ghz 256MB

my music consists of 1400 albums with 18434 songs by 560 artists.

Basically everything works fine so far, only when I browse my music for
genres, the cpu load goes to 100% for minutes. When I check the top
command, I see that mysqld is using all the CPU power.

For example, when I click on the rock genre, which contains 642 albums,
I need to wait 6 minutes for a reaction. In the meantime, the music on
my squeezebox stops due to the heavy cpu load.

The old version 6.3 needed 5 seconds for the same request.

Interestingly, browsing via the IR Control Search-Genres-Rock is
going very fast.

I already experimented with increasing buffer values in /etc/my.cnf,
but that doesn't help much.

I'd be happy for comments, especially from Michael since he seems to
use the same hardware as I do.

Re: [slim] Emergency Action Needed! - Save Net Radio!!

2007-07-13 Thread peterw

Reading the latest news about the CRB and Internet Radio rates, I'm
struck by the royalty formula
http://www.wired.com/entertainment/music/news/2007/07/webcasters_face_music
Webcasting royalty payments for Jan. 1, 2006, to July 1, 2007, due
under the new scheme would total $.000762 times the number of songs
played per listener...
The per-listener rates would rise to $0.0019 per song by 2010.

How is per listener calculated, especially for stations that don't
require login accounts? If I have 2 or more Squeezeboxes playing the
same Internet Radio stream, each is, as I understand it, making its own
HTTP connection to the server. Would that therefore counted as 2 or more
listeners? Should HTTP streams be processed through Slimserver so that a
single HTTP connection to the Internet Radio source could be utilized --
reducing my bandwidth and broadcasters' royalty payments?

Re: [slim] very slow response time when browsing genres

I'd like to add that all other ways of browsing are AMAZINGLY FAST. Way
faster than at my 6.3 installation. Only broswing for genres that
contains lots of albums in my database like Rock and Pop take INSANELY
long time.

Therefore I assume that it is not about my relatively weak hardware,
nor about the setup of the mysql server, but a inefficient way of
querying the server for genres, that results in high CPU load and that
ludicrous response times.

How does your slimserver6.5.3 installation react?

I use the workaround of browsing for Music Folders, since my folders
are organized in Genres.

You may want to search on this forum regarding Dolby Digital
pass-through. There are some solutions but unfortunately the file must
be specially processed.

How are these steams encoded in 5.1? Are there phase queues embedded
in the regular 2-channel stream (aka Dolby Surround), is it Dolby
Digital or is is some special 5-channel MP3? If it's Dolby Surround
then yes, if you play it back in PL/PLII you can recover the surround

Re: [slim] How do YOU backup your music?

2007-07-13 Thread kolding

I, personally, have a rather complicated strategy.
I rip all my CD's to FLAC for archival purposes, but do to disk space
costs, I keep my online storage in MP3.

I store my MP3's on a RAID array, and backup weekly to a second hard
drive in an external moveable enclosure.

My FLAC's I currently keep on an external hard drive, which I backup to
DVD. I then keep this collection of DVD's offsite (ok, at my desk at
work).

I threw together a couple scripts to manage backing stuff up to optical
discs. These are aimed at systems which are write-mostly, ie, you keep
adding new content without really updating what's already there.

My scripts are at:
http://koldware.com/SlimStuff/MusicUtils/makeBackupSet
and
http://koldware.com/SlimStuff/MusicUtils/makeISOs

The former script maintains a database of files, and allocates the
files to various DVD's. The latter script takes that database and
creates the individual ISO images that you can use to burn the physical
DVD's.

Using the makeBackupSet script, you can grow the database, and it will
add to the end of the backup set.

Sample usage would be:
makeBackupSet -db /etc/MusicBackup.db -k -p -f -v /music/FLAC
This will create (or extend) the database in /etc/MusicBackup.db.
It will attempt to keep all the files in a directory together (-k),
pack directories into the disks it's creating (-p), fill the last
previously created disk (-f) and tell you about it all (-v).

You can then run makeISOs on this DB:
makeISOs -d /tmp/FlacBackup -i ~/tmp/Backup -m -s -c -p 79-80
which will generate ISO images of discs 79 and 80, call tmp
~/tmp/Backup.79 and ~/tmp/Backup.80.

They're kindof poorly documented, your best bet is to read the code for
help. Maybe I'll update the -h screens.

[slim] 6.5.3 issue

2007-07-13 Thread Mike White

Maybe it is just me, but I am having an issue with the latest release,
6.5.3 downloaded July 13th (is that an omen?). In any event I do prefer
to be able to see what album/artist I am listening to on occasion. (i.e.
there's a problem with the cut, so I want to know what I need to fix) So
6.5.3 only allows me to show the title of the song - nothing else. I
initially started with a nightly because of issues with 6.5.2
(released), but now I am thinking of returning to 6.5.2.

Not slamming anyone, but I would think that this is the kind of issue
that should have kept this from a production release. If it wasn't
caught in beta, then I would think that QA should have caught it in any
kind of a normal testing cycle, although I know that there are a
thousand or more confirguations that do need to be tested.

Does anyone else have this issue? I am running Windows XP, with all the
current updates. Java has been updated to the absolute latest. This
happens with both SoftSqueeze and my SB2.

I am running with 1.2 gigs of memory, and two hard drives, the smallest
of which is about 170 gigs, although the one with the music on it is
about 250 gigs.

Thanks,

[slim] SB: KQED stream via Squeezenetwork causes RESETS!

2007-07-13 Thread aaron_in_sf

Here's a weird one...

We use our Squeezebox almost exclusively through Squeezenetwork (for
Pandora and streaming net stations).

Quite often when we play the stream for our local NPR affiliate, KQED,
which we have as one of our favorites, the SB freezes, there's a very
loud pop out the analog outputs as the SB *RESETS*!

E.g. something in the KQED stream/playlist causes a reset. :(

I believe the problem is related to the fact that KQED stream always
plays a sponsorship message first , then switches to the live stream --
I assume there are multiple files in its playlist or whatever.

We can often work around this by hitting rewind or forward after
playing the stream.

Another subtlety, it often seems that we never get a reset when we play
through the Squeezenetwork favorites... by city... san francisco...
entry point, only when we play it as a favorite.

Perhaps some kind of cache is kept for favorites related to position in
list?

Anyone else encountered this?

[slim] Scanner dies with SQL error on 6.5.3 Release

2007-07-13 Thread chrisla

Since upgrading from a recent 6.5.3 nightly to 6.5.3 release (or 6.5.4

]

2007-07-12 23:52:47.9593 ERROR: Scanner: Skipping post-process Not

This is happening on several songs.

This sort of thing seems more and more common, perhaps LogiSlim needs a
DB of real world tags. People could use a utility to strip out the music
data, and submit trees of meta music to create a real world torture test
to be run before releases go out. Such a test certainly would have run
on the nightly and failed on the release in my case.

Also as an aside moderation of the forums seems to have some new
policies and people, I certainly don't recall threads ever being locked
before recently.

It's back to 6.5.2 for me I guess (which was broken in less serious
ways)...

Thanks,

-Chris

Yep - I initially downloaded a nightly with the full understanding that
it is a beta (at best) build. I have spent the last 20 years or so doing
software QA, although I can always be introduced to something new. I
also downloaded the just released build, which is what I was commenting

Okay, I have changed the player settings as you suggested, which
worked. My apologies for thinking (and implying) that QA wasn't doing
it's job. (I have also been on that end.)

What I did do is try to change the settings on the server, not the
player, thinking that the player would simply show what is requested by
the server. My bad.

Now my question resolves to what is the difference between the server
and player formatting? And furthermore, how is that expressed to the
general public?

Yep - I sure as hell should have figured this out, I have enough
experience to have done that, but what about the poor newbe/non-geek?

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Boombox

2007-07-13 Thread Mike White

I bought - a number of months ago - a setup that allowed me to broadcast
my music (via SB2) to a pair of speakers that could be either battery
powered or plugged in.

It is not the best thing in the world, but we can put the speakers
anywhere, either with or without batteries (we have never used
batteries.) Out by the spa is wonderful, especially at night with just
the stars out.

I am not happy with the manufacturer because I had a few issues with
them, but this is a possibility for others. I would just recommend that
they use a different system.

[slim] SqueezeBox3 not working?

2007-07-13 Thread ness_andrew

Hi there. I can't get my squeezebox3 to connect to my wireless network.
I can't get it to connect to the squeeze network or my computer. I have
a dlink dva-g3340s adsl voip wireless router with a extra range aerial,
so wireless strength is not the problem. I am using vista with the
latest download of slimserver. Whenever I try and connect to the
squeeze network, the screen of the unit goes blank and it doesn't
connect. Is there something in my router setup that needs fixing? Also
I can't connect to my computer, but I guess if I could connect at least
to the squeeze network that would be great.
Thanks

I couldn't agree more with NWP. Yes, I know Slim is an audiophile
grade solution. But there are many situations in a home environment
where an All-In-One solution will get much more use. More use = more
enjoyment (and perhaps more sales).

I currently have a roving SB3 and it's a pain in the keister. Even
with battery powered speakers, I still have two devices (SB3 speaker
unit), dangling wires between them, and the SB wall-wart to deal with.
If I didn't like Slim so much I certainly wouldn't bother.

PLEASE give us a portable solution for those situations where we can't

Re: [slim] Ugraged to ..6.5.3 :-(

2007-07-13 Thread andy_c

It's been my experience that 6.5.x (latest 6.5.3) is the worst POS
software I've ever had the misfortune of using, bar none.

If you press the stop button on an AACplus internet radio stream,
SlimServer locks up and may render the server unusable without a
reboot.

If a .ogg internet radio stream stops, the Squeezebox gets stuck in a
state that requires unplugging it and plugging it back in again for it
to work.

I've had my Squeezebox 2 for several years now, and in all that time
I've only had to unplug it once to get it to play tunes again.

Today, I've had to unplug and re-plug the Squeezebox about five times
to get it out of a locked up state. This is due to replacing the 6.3.1
SlimServer with 6.5.3. I've had to eliminate all .ogg and AACplus
internet radio streams from my list to even get it into this state.

If you want to see the caliber of the so-called software QA of
SlimDevices, just install 6.5.3. Look at the install dialog box. It
will tell you that you are installing 6.5.2. As far as I can tell,
there is no software QA of SlimServer whatsoever. Or if there is, they
are a bunch of complete idiots who are totally asleep at the wheel.

Sean is a great guy who has done a superb job with the Squeezebox and
Transporter hardware. But the so-called software QA of SlimServer is
a complete joke - if it exists at all, which I doubt. Sean has
associated himself with bad company here, which will have the end
result of giving him a bad name.

Trolls may use the exit to the rear. Everyone else, please disregard
the vomit on the floor. Little furry things that whistle pleasantly
will be along shortly to clean it up.

I'm an EE software developer. I've actually worked at companies where
there is software QA.

Since you have pointed it out, I'm sure that as a professional, you are
well aware of the need to respect others in the industry and refrain
from the widely targetted personal attacks with which you so kindly
opened your exchange. I suggest you take some time off, and approach
your problem from a different angle. If you wish to have assistance,
there are plenty around who are more than willing to help. If that is
not possible for you, I suggest you rethink announcing your
qualifications as if it should mean anything to excuse your previous
behaviour.
