Re: [slim] Does Logitech Streaming Systems know the meaning of Customer Service?

2008-03-11 Thread ptrainer

Hi All! My first post here.

re: Customer Service

I must say, I've been a customer since 2001 and one thing I always
noticed about Slim Devices was how incredible their customer service
is. My experience is that they really go above and beyond. If you call
(650) 210-9400 and speak to a salesperson I'd be very shocked if they
didn't resolve your problem very quickly. I think it's easier and
quicker if you call and speak to someone as opposed to e-mailing.
That's just my two cents.

My customer service experience has also been excellent (e.g. had a

delay or cost to me), which is impressive given that I am in a different

2008-03-11 Thread willyhoops

It's an important point. I have mentioned it lots of times but Logitech
have still not got the point. The Yamaha CDRH1500 does not have it,
apple tv does not have it, and it makes absolutely no sense at all
anyway. I know Logitech love covering their keyboards with buttons no
one ever uses but that is not cool anymore (if it ever was). But in
thise case it's much much worse because most 99% of users are too dumb
to understand that should not use the thing.

This might be the case, however, I'd have to agree with haunyack that
it's unacceptable to publish an order status mail address and don't
respond within 8 days. Support issues can take longer time, but a
simple order status request shouldn't have to take over a week.

haunyack, your mail to the orders mail address probably got lost
somewhere, but I'm sure someone at Logitech is going to spot this
thread as soon as they wake up in US. If they don't, try the orders
mail address a second time or use the phone. The forum is really not
the correct place to get the status of a specific order.

 and render quickly.

With SqueezeCenter, it's completely unusable, taking over a minute to
load the initial screen, on Firefox or Safari. As soon as I run any
other app, music starts to drop out.

Ok, let's get this sorted out: we get complaints about SC being slow. But
in fact we're talking about two potential sources of slowness here: client
(the machine running the browser) and server (machine running SC), though
often they are the same.

As many are using old or underpowered hardware as their servers (think
NAS...), but rather up to date machines on the client side running their
browsers, we moved a bit of the load from the server to the client side in
the new Default skin. Many of the web page updates that were rendered on
the server side in SS are now done in the browser, using JS (player
control panel). Thus it can run considerably faster on a NAS powerful
client installation, as the NAS doesn't have to work that hard any more.
But it can get slower on a slow client, or if the client is run on the
same machine as the server.

My guess is that the SqueezeCenter/Browser combination uses more memory
than previous versions, especially when rendering the new interface. If

Memory and CPU cycles.

you are on older hardware with a smaller RAM footprint, then a lot more
 swapping goes on.

I'm seeing more of a CPU load problem than RAM. Heavy JS loaded we
interfaces only have come up in recent years. Many of the browsers out
there aren't optimised for JS execution speed.

The only way I can use it now is if I ensure that no other apps are
running (apart from system apps), but even then the web interface is
 still painful in the extreme.

But only in Default skin? Classic et al. should be as fine as always.

no, I think it is entirely expected that a response should be had in
that time. It is also not hard to believe that several things can get
in the way of that when it's just email. It's all a matter of
priority. If this matters to you, which it clearly does, phone is
much more direct.

Case in point: before Christmas, I had an issue with an order from
BestBuy here in canada. They had shipped, but Canada Post showed no
activity two weeks after the ship date. Two more weeks of emailing and
nothing. Then after my three attempts at making email contact...I had
nothing. Three days later, I got two automated acknowledgements of my
first two emails and a response to the third stating that a trace had
been put on the package and I'd have further info in 10 days. No idea
why it took so long, or why it all came at once, but I was on vacation
so didn't care to do much more than email. Had I returned home with
still no response, a trip to the local store was the plan.

Clearly your desired result is to get a nice new remote for your
customer. It is in your customer's best interests that you be patient
and let this thread work through to the right people, or take every
measure available to you to make direct contact in order to achieve
your desired result. Walking away in anger may seem right, right now,
but it doesn't server your customer.

I'm sure it's all going to work out ok.

issue was solved immediately. I have never ordered directly from SD but
when I once had a defective remote they were very proactive in offering
to replace it and far more concerned about customer service than exact
warranty stipulations.

So perhaps this is more a problem with filters and automated responses
than customer service

Remote controls have generally for far too long been excluded from

You lack imagination. Without a volume control, how do I change the

Case in point: before Christmas, I had an issue with an order from
BestBuy here in canada. They had shipped, but Canada Post showed no
activity two weeks after the ship date. Two more weeks of emailing and

nothing. Then after my three attempts at making email contact...I had

haunyack, your mail to the orders mail address probably got lost

mail address a second time or use the phone. The forum is really not
the correct place to get the status of a specific order.

I agree with that as well. It's just that haunyack seemed really
distressed about his client not having a remote and I just thought a
brief phone call would be the quickest way to resolve the issue... and
again, my experience with Slim Devices customer service by phone has
been exemplary. Sometimes we get so stuck on a specific (such as not
getting an email response - which could have a host of reasons behind
it) while ignoring the easiest solution on priciple. Why get yourself

can speak to a living, breathing person in real time for an immediate
response? That's all I was thinking. No disrespect to haunyack's
frustrating experience which is valid. :-)

Imagine my distress.

Imagine you are Logitech and have just sold an SB3 to a paying
customer.
The unit arrives fully and professionally packaged.
The buyer installs Squeezecenter, plugs in the hardware, sets up the
wireless config with the REMOTE and scans his library.
Within hours (or minutes) he is listening to music on his home audio
system.
Bravo Logitech!

ok, Imagine you are me and have just sold an SB3 to a paying customer.
The unit arrives (almost) fully and professionally packaged.
The buyer installs Squeezecenter, plugs in the hardware, does not set
up the wireless config because there is NO REMOTE!
The stupid seller did not ship the damn REMOTE!

The stupid seller realized within minutes after shipping that he did
not ship the stupid remote and contacts the buyer to inform him of his
stupid error.
Then, after searching high and low, cannot find the original SB3 remote
(been using the slick backlit remote that came with his TP).
Stupid seller then informs buyer that he has lost the stupid remote and
has ordered a replacement through Logitech and will have it shipped
directly to him and forward the shipping info when received.

The stupid seller hears nothing from stupid Logitech.
The buyer hears from stupid seller nothing heard from stupid Logitech.
Stupid Logitech says nothing (stupidly).

Stupid seller embarrassed for stupid Logitech and himself.
Stupid seller tries to remedy the stupid situation, but no respose.
Stupid seller looking real stupid now.

Stupid seller becomes even more stupid by posting on the stupid SD
forum.
Gets a bunch of stupid replies.
Stupid is as stupid does.

Finally, Mike M. at Logitech notifies stupid seller and offers to
investigate the stupid problem.

Stupid seller finally has something to tell his buyer...that yes indeed
their IS a tracking number and YES the order was shipped.

Moral here?
No.

Just a stupid story about a stupid mistake that could be made by any

however, if that market is very large i am wrong. i am really sorry, i

OK I am really wrong. Maybe this is the way most people use it- I
didn't know that. So the stereo market is not so important.

This is why on the Sonos web site:

http://www.sonos.com/products/zoneplayers/zp80/features.htm

Analog and digital audio output Enjoy your music anywhere by
connecting to your home theater receiver or amplifier with analog,
optical and coaxial digital audio outputs. We also provide fixed or
variable audio output volume control.

But the Squeezebox does not bother, has only variable volume, and
mostly sell to the power speaker market. And transporter users or those
in the know can get around the problem by editing some config files.
Only the variable volume on the digital out makes no sense since that
is only used by pros.

-

smc2911 if you are using powered speakers its fine. it's only an issue
if you have the line out going to a stereo which then adjusts the signal
to the voltage you want for your speakers acording to the way you have
set the volume knob.

[slim] SB 3 Wireless Problems

2008-03-11 Thread bstrulo

I have had a Squeezebox v3 for a year or so, connected wirelessly with
no problems.

Just this morning, I discovered that the wireless signal strength had
suddenly dropped to 41% and I was getting a test throughput of less
than 50% at 128kbps. Plainly no good.

I tried all the obvious things: netstumbler showed no change in local
interfering networks, I tried changing the channel, resetting my router
to factory defaults: no good.

Finally in desperation I reset my Squeezebox to factory defaults.
Bingo - it's working again.

But what went wrong? The day before yesterday I upgraded to SC 7 and
my firmware went from 81 (I think, or thereabouts) to 86. Is that a
coincidence or is there possibly some wireless issues in the new
firmware? I'm using WPA, if that is relevant.

Any ideas?

[slim] Swedish Radio as OPML

2008-03-11 Thread strindberg

If you're not particularly interested in Swedish Radio, you can safely
stop reading now.

I have recently been in contact with the support at Swedish Radio
([EMAIL PROTECTED]), asking whether it be possible for them to
provide an OPML resource for their podcasts, the way NPR does
(http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/opml.php).

They very quickly and very politely replied that my email had doubled
the number of requests for this feature. They are not against
implementing this, but need to investigate the demand and maintenance
cost of providing it.

The demand side of the equation is where you might help. If you feel
the need for such a feature, please drop a line to the above-mentioned
address, telling them you would appreciate if they implement such a
thing.

For those who haven't tried it, and OPML file from sr.se would make it
possible to make all the sr podcasts browsable from the Squeezebox (or
equivalent) in one sweep.

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Anyone noticed the Apple TV has no volume control?

2008-03-11 Thread willyhoops

yes if you use a stero and the volume control you are making a big
mistake. in your case (maybe you are only a small part of the logitech
market however) you have significantly reduced sound quality becuase
logitech gave you a stupid setup and or did not explain it properly. do
you understand it now? in your case, logitech have screwed you!

now you can get round this problem, if you don't mind editing the linux
config files, using the info i posted before. or just make sure the
volume is at max and check it from time to time in case the wife
changed it. i guess that is what most people do. (unless they changed
the functionality of the latest version of slimserver)

ok maybe i am wrong on the exact details but smc2911 i will try and
calculate just how bad the quality of your squeezebox playback has been
the last few years.

using:

http://www.gcaudio.com/resources/howtos/voltageloudness.html

To get a doubling of loudness, it is important to note that an increase
of 10dB is necessary. And to reproduce that volume through our
loudspeakers, note that we require ten times more power from the
amplifier, which is voltage increase of 3.16 times.

If your stereo volume is set to a point where at squeezebox music keeps
the party ticking... now if in normal listening it is say half as
loud...

then i think you are going to drop from 16 bit resolution to one third
of that. but anyone can correct me if they like... its not really my
area

either way at least i now have one

Oh dear oh dear.

You seem to be rather confused about this issue.

Let's put aside the fact that you can just set the Squeezebox to maximum
volume to get the same effect as a fixed output (really, you can, the
volume control is done digitally, the analogue out is fixed). Just how

I use email heavily, and most of the time it's just fine. But if I'm not

Re: [slim] Does Logitech Streaming Systems know the meaning of Customer Service?

2008-03-11 Thread pfurrie

I've read through this thread, and am a bit confused:

Why should the good support experiences of several Slim Device
customers negate haunyack's current issue? They don't.

And why should a forum called General Discussion (The Kitchen Sink)
be an innappropriate place to post these issues? If there is a better
forum in which to post, point it out.

Yes, I love my Squeezebox as much as the next person, and yes, I've had
good tech support experiences with Slim Devices in the past. But why
should haunyack have to resort to calling (on their schedule) rather
than emailing (on his schedule)? Isn't Logitech a Tech company?
Don't they provide information and sales online? Don't they support
the use of email? And if haunyack emailed them asking for help, even
*if* it posted the incorrect email address during his order, the
response to the subsequent queries should have been replied the address
from where he posted the requests, removing questions of a wrong address
and very probably also removing any issues of spam filters
interferring.

haunyack's intention was to shine a public light on the issue in order
to get his problem resolved, after having attempted to do this in the
more mannerly method of private email to the company. Why get irrate
over his bad fortune? Why lecture him regarding how he can't possibly
put down the support of a company which isn't doing right in this case?
Isn't it possible to consider that the Slim Devices support have
changed with aquisition by Logitech? I can understand some mixup in
the order, but then Logitech/Slim Devices should have been able to
answer the follow-up emails.

then one third of that will be the level for normal listening...

imagine the line in had an analogue to digital convertor on it...
then one third of the resolution would be lost.

CD audio is (generally) 16-bit. The Squeezebox uses 24-bit processing.
This is means that the volume can be reduced by a whole 8 bits without
losing any resolution.

Here's an example using 4-bits / 8 bits:

Original 4-bit audio:
Processed as 8-bit audio:
Half the volume : 0000
Half the volume : 0000
Half the volume : 0000
Half the volume :

Notice, we've now reduced the volume significantly and have still not
lost any resolution.

ok it does not have a a a/d... instead it uses analouge gain... but
the noise and resolution must come into it...

No, it uses digital gain. The analogue gain is fixed (for best S/N ratio).

I'll say it again - if you want fixed (maximum) output from the SB just
turn up the volume to full and forget about it. You are not losing anything.

Let's look at your example another way:

are you understanding what i am saying... if 6v is the max level that
when it comes out of his hifi makes a party kick...

then one third of that will be the level for normal listening...

imagine the line in had an analogue to digital convertor on it...
then one third of the resolution would be lost.

So, imagine your SB output is set to maximum, and your amplifier volume
control is set to whatever level required to make a party kick.

For normal listening (one third of that) simply turn the amplifier
volume down.

Easy.

Re: [slim] Anyone noticed the Apple TV has no volume control?

smc2911 i guess the 16 bit signal gets the volume level applied to it
and then it get output directy in one place, and then upscaled and
output as analogue in the other place.

but it would be possible to build a computer soundcard that applied the
final volume adjustmet in the analogue domain after all the signal
processing and mixing etc... and then if you put that into your powered
speakers the quality would be fine for most sensible volume settings.

i am not sure how out creative labs sound etc cards work

I followed the link, but I don't see how it applies to the SB volume

Since it's in the analog stage, talking about bits being lost wouldn't
seem to apply. Maybe someone with more technical knowledge needs to

It's cool that you like the product and want to let people know.

unjustly railed upon for expressing his problems with Slim Devices.
This seems as good a place to vent as any, and no company is so good
that they shouldn't be due some public scrutiny at some time. The
smart company can profit from those occasions by also showing how they
can publically admit the issue graciously and then take care of their
customer. This is how Lexus built up a great support reputation during
their first auto recall some years ago. Instead of hiding the issue,
they quickly acknowledged it, and then went out of their way to remedy
it. Those customers who bought those early Lexus automobiles then
weren't thinking they had lemons, but had good cars (as they were now
fixed) AND were connected with a car company with superlative customer
service.

All the good past experience with a company means nothing if they can't

I went through the same process as I just wanted a spare remote and am
living in the Netherlands. Called Logitech and no service regarding
this. Eventually they told me I could order one on the slimdevices
site. I asked them to hold the line while checking it out and told them
that slimdevices don't do shipping to europe. Asking them to place the
order and facilitate the shipping for me went unheard.

So my conclusion was that Logitech is shipping and selling the
squeezebox products but don't deliver the additional support services
as should be done like slimdevices do in the US. I also found out that
Logitech has no customer service for filling complaints. No web form,
no phone number, nothing besides the product support line but they
don't take complaints.

The only service offered is when the remote gets broken, the whole unit
will be replaced (as reported by Logitech). I find it kind of strange
to replace a €299 unit if the €20 remote is broken but ok thats how is
works.

I am notting flaming Logitech here but from the various forum treads I
think there is a great difference in support in the US vs other
countries. Don't know if this can be related to Slimdevices vs Logitech
but it is remarkable.

While surfing around I found a wonderfull store (www.wifisound.nl)
which sells all kinds of streaming media products. Called them in a
final attempt for a new remote; answer, sure, no problem, which one
would you like, the backlit or the regular version. Price was also
conform slimdevices site.

They only ship in the benelux though but you could give them a call.
There are really nice guys with great service. Maybe even so that they
will ship one...

Re: [slim] Anyone noticed the Apple TV has no volume control?

2008-03-11 Thread ModelCitizen

This is an odd thread. How would I adjust the volume of my hifis if the
Transporter/SB3 did not have a volume control?

Transporter Bryston S4 PMC OB1s
Controlled by controller

SB3 AudioEngine 2s
Controlled by backlit remote and controller

I, and I imagine a lot of other people, would be stuffed without a
volume control.

Re: [slim] Anyone noticed the Apple TV has no volume control?

2008-03-11 Thread T
To get a doubling of loudness, it is important to note that an increase
of 10dB is necessary. And to reproduce that volume through our
loudspeakers, note that we require ten times more power from the
amplifier, which is voltage increase of 3.16 times.

If your stereo volume is set to a point where at squeezebox music keeps
the party ticking... now if in normal listening it is say half as
 loud...

then i think you are going to drop from 16 bit resolution to one third
of that. but anyone can correct me if they like... its not really my
 area

Apparently not.

Actually, 1bit=6.02 dB, so you are talking 1 2/3 bits, i.e. going from
16 to 14 1/3.

But only if the signal is digital.

In the analog domain, it's simply a matter of raising the noise floor,
i.e. no bits are lost.

Re: [slim] Swedish Radio as OPML

2008-03-11 Thread TCM

Good work! I will e-mail them.

Another question that I've raised with the same person is song
information imbedded in the wma stream. I guess there's something
similar to id3-tags for wma streams. Last time I checked the Squeezebox
screen showed:

Artist: Sveriges Radio
Titel: P3 Svea - Sveriges Radio AB

The answer was: Det beror antagligen på att Sveriges Radio använder en
egen sorts taggning från utsändningen till webbspelaren och inte
standard-märking (ex ID3-taggning) i streamingen. (sorry about not
translating).

This was august 2006 and there was apparently nothing I (or they) could
do. Maybe it's time to raise the question again?

I think so :)

I've never really spent much time looking at the transcoding options,
never needed to. And I'm not at home with my server so I can't check.
But if you leave ALAC to WAV checked and un-check the rest that will
produce the least procesing load on the server. It may still nto work,
but it will give you the best chance.

Re: [slim] Overseas Transporters

2008-03-11 Thread funkstar

This has been covered in numerous threads in the past.

Basically it comes down to several factors:
1. Incresed taxes in the EU compaired to the US
2. Increase in the cost of doing business in the EU, meaning the markup
has to be higher
3. They can charge more so they do. Simple business sense.

Re: [slim] Radiotime service/ Local radio

2008-03-11 Thread servies

If I'm correct it's because the streams use a format not supported by
the squeezebox.
I'm not sure but I remember seeing some using the realaudio streaming
protocol and (correct me if I'm wrong) that's not implemented in the
squeezebox.

I wonder if it's possible for squeezecenter to NOT show these
unsupported streams?

Yeah, bummer.
But I'm pretty sure that I've listed to some wma-channel that showed
meta data on my squeezebox screen. Is there some non-standard way you
could tell us about? That works together with the SB.

Quickie translation of the rest of my previous post:

It's probably becuase Sveriges Radio use their own sort of tagging when
transmitting to their web player and not standard (e.g. ID3 tags) in
 the stream.
