Re: [slim] Does Logitech Streaming Systems know the meaning of Customer Service?
Hi All! My first post here. re: Customer Service I must say, I've been a customer since 2001 and one thing I always noticed about Slim Devices was how incredible their customer service is. My experience is that they really go above and beyond. If you call (650) 210-9400 and speak to a salesperson I'd be very shocked if they didn't resolve your problem very quickly. I think it's easier and quicker if you call and speak to someone as opposed to e-mailing. That's just my two cents. -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44576 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Anyone noticed the Apple TV has no volume control?
It's an important point. I have mentioned it lots of times but Logitech have still not got the point. The Yamaha CDRH1500 does not have it, apple tv does not have it, and it makes absolutely no sense at all anyway. I know Logitech love covering their keyboards with buttons no one ever uses but that is not cool anymore (if it ever was). But in thise case it's much much worse because most 99% of users are too dumb to understand that should not use the thing. -- willyhoops willyhoops's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10563 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44546 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I have been using a PowerMac G4 since forever as my server and the interface was slow, but vaguely usable. All other web pages are snappy and render quickly. With SqueezeCenter, it's completely unusable, taking over a minute to load the initial screen, on Firefox or Safari. As soon as I run any other app, music starts to drop out. Ok, let's get this sorted out: we get complaints about SC being slow. But in fact we're talking about two potential sources of slowness here: client (the machine running the browser) and server (machine running SC), though often they are the same. As many are using old or underpowered hardware as their servers (think NAS...), but rather up to date machines on the client side running their browsers, we moved a bit of the load from the server to the client side in the new Default skin. Many of the web page updates that were rendered on the server side in SS are now done in the browser, using JS (player control panel). Thus it can run considerably faster on a NAS powerful client installation, as the NAS doesn't have to work that hard any more. But it can get slower on a slow client, or if the client is run on the same machine as the server. My guess is that the SqueezeCenter/Browser combination uses more memory than previous versions, especially when rendering the new interface. If Memory and CPU cycles. you are on older hardware with a smaller RAM footprint, then a lot more swapping goes on. I'm seeing more of a CPU load problem than RAM. Heavy JS loaded we interfaces only have come up in recent years. Many of the browsers out there aren't optimised for JS execution speed. The only way I can use it now is if I ensure that no other apps are running (apart from system apps), but even then the web interface is still painful in the extreme. But only in Default skin? Classic et al. should be as fine as always. Michael ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If they don't, try the orders mail address a second time or use the phone. The forum is really not the correct place to get the status of a specific order. I agree with that as well. It's just that haunyack seemed really distressed about his client not having a remote and I just thought a brief phone call would be the quickest way to resolve the issue... and again, my experience with Slim Devices customer service by phone has been exemplary. Sometimes we get so stuck on a specific (such as not getting an email response - which could have a host of reasons behind it) while ignoring the easiest solution on priciple. Why get yourself all worked up over 8 days waiting for an electronic response when you can speak to a living, breathing person in real time for an immediate response? That's all I was thinking. [slim] SB 3 Wireless Problems
I have had a Squeezebox v3 for a year or so, connected wirelessly with no problems. Just this morning, I discovered that the wireless signal strength had suddenly dropped to 41% and I was getting a test throughput of less than 50% at 128kbps. Plainly no good. I tried all the obvious things: netstumbler showed no change in local interfering networks, I tried changing the channel, resetting my router to factory defaults: no good. Finally in desperation I reset my Squeezebox to factory defaults. Bingo - it's working again. But what went wrong? The day before yesterday I upgraded to SC 7 and my firmware went from 81 (I think, or thereabouts) to 86. Is that a coincidence or is there possibly some wireless issues in the new firmware? I've read through this thread, and am a bit confused: Why should the good support experiences of several Slim Device customers negate haunyack's current issue? They don't. And why should a forum called General Discussion (The Kitchen Sink) be an innappropriate place to post these issues? If there is a better forum in which to post, point it out. Yes, I love my Squeezebox as much as the next person, and yes, I've had good tech support experiences with Slim Devices in the past. But why should haunyack have to resort to calling (on their schedule) rather than emailing (on his schedule)? Isn't Logitech a Tech company? Don't they provide information and sales online? Don't they support the use of email? And if haunyack emailed them asking for help, even *if* it posted the incorrect email address during his order, the response to the subsequent queries should have been replied the address from where he posted the requests, removing questions of a wrong address and very probably also removing any issues of spam filters interferring. haunyack's intention was to shine a public light on the issue in order to get his problem resolved, after having attempted to do this in the more mannerly method of private email to the company. Why get irrate over his bad fortune? Why lecture him regarding how he can't possibly put down the support of a company which isn't doing right in this case? CD audio is (generally) 16-bit. The Squeezebox uses 24-bit processing. This is means that the volume can be reduced by a whole 8 bits without losing any resolution. Here's an example using 4-bits / 8 bits: Original 4-bit audio: Processed as 8-bit audio: Half the volume : 0000 Half the volume : 0000 Half the volume : 0000 Half the volume : Notice, we've now reduced the volume significantly and have still not lost any resolution. ok it does not have a a a/d... instead it uses analouge gain... but the noise and resolution must come into it... No, it uses digital gain. The analogue gain is fixed (for best S/N ratio). I'll say it again - if you want fixed (maximum) output from the SB just turn up the volume to full and forget about it. You are not losing anything. Let's look at your example another way: are you understanding what i am saying... if 6v is the max level that when it comes out of his hifi makes a party kick... then one third of that will be the level for normal listening... imagine the line in had an analogue to digital convertor on it... then one third of the resolution would be lost. So, imagine your SB output is set to maximum, and your amplifier volume control is set to whatever level required to make a party kick. For normal listening (one third of that) simply turn the amplifier volume down. Easy. R. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Anyone noticed the Apple TV has no volume control?
smc2911 i guess the 16 bit signal gets the volume level applied to it and then it get output directy in one place, and then upscaled and output as analogue in the other place. but it would be possible to build a computer soundcard that applied the final volume adjustmet in the analogue domain after all the signal processing and mixing etc... and then if you put that into your powered speakers the quality would be fine for most sensible volume settings. i am not sure how out creative labs sound etc cards work -- willyhoops willyhoops's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10563 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44546 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I followed the link, but I don't see how it applies to the SB volume control. If I use analog out and use the squeezebox remote to turn the volume down, how is that different to using the volume on the amp? Since it's in the analog stage, talking about bits being lost wouldn't seem to apply. This seems as good a place to vent as any, and no company is so good that they shouldn't be due some public scrutiny at some time. The smart company can profit from those occasions by also showing how they can publically admit the issue graciously and then take care of their customer. This is how Lexus built up a great support reputation during their first auto recall some years ago. Instead of hiding the issue, they quickly acknowledged it, and then went out of their way to remedy it. Asking them to place the order and facilitate the shipping for me went unheard. So my conclusion was that Logitech is shipping and selling the squeezebox products but don't deliver the additional support services as should be done like slimdevices do in the US. I also found out that Logitech has no customer service for filling complaints. No web form, no phone number, nothing besides the product support line but they don't take complaints. Re: [slim] Anyone noticed the Apple TV has no volume control?
To get a doubling of loudness, it is important to note that an increase of 10dB is necessary. And to reproduce that volume through our loudspeakers, note that we require ten times more power from the amplifier, which is voltage increase of 3.16 times. If your stereo volume is set to a point where at squeezebox music keeps the party ticking... now if in normal listening it is say half as loud... then i think you are going to drop from 16 bit resolution to one third of that. but anyone can correct me if they like... its not really my area Apparently not. Actually, 1bit=6.02 dB, so you are talking 1 2/3 bits, i.e. going from 16 to 14 1/3. But only if the signal is digital. In the analog domain, it's simply a matter of raising the noise floor, i.e. no bits are lost.
