Now that I've got most of the kinks out, I like to use the album view on SC 7 home page (Firefox/XP). But it always defaults to linear listing by album title. I reset it to large artwork, sort by artist/album, all is copacetic. But next time I start SC, it's back to the title/tiny art default. apple does not license apple lossless, every non-apple device has to rely on the reverse engineered decoder which has limitations. reverse engineering the format is actually quite a lot of work, and apple can break it any time by tweaking the format. that's what you buy into when you use a proprietary codec; it's only smooth if you accept apple lock-in. -- Josh Coalson Josh Coalson's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2651 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35396 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] 2 New Questions on Duet Config
Yes, I searched, and came up with nada for either of these questions, so I appreciate any and all suggestions: 1) Is there a way I can set the Duet Controller's wallpaper to an image of my own, or am I limited to the default options? 2) We rip our music and sync (copy) it to our Mac for iTunes purposes, but the master files (by artist/album/) are all on a PC. So, using the Embed Artwork script to copy the artwork into the album directories won't work -- each time I sync our master collection to the Mac, it overwrites anything different on the Mac's external drive, which will blow away the extra art files. So, is there a way to get the artwork to show up on the Controller that doesn't involve altering the music directory's contents? Alternately, is there a way to have the Controller not display the musical note icon (where the cover art goes if it's available)? Much thanks in advance. If we can get these two bits solved, I can honestly say we'll be 100% satisfied with our Duet. :-) -- craigf craigf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16032 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44675 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Browsing artists on the controller
I know this has come up before but wanted to add a new vote and perhaps a suggestion. My lists of artists is almost 2000 long. The controller scrolls lists nicely and the acceleration feature helps, but no amount of acceleration really makes scrolling through 2000 items very nice. I was wondering if there might not be a way to give us a way when we're scrolling artists (or other really long lists), to jump forward to the next letter in the alphabet... For example, if I was browsing in artists and currently looking at those that start with "A", it would be nice if one of the keys on the remote would skip me ahead to artists that start with "B". This way, getting from A to J would involve hitting a key 9 times (if my math is right). I don't know about others, but using the next / previous track buttons would serve nicely here. In other words, their use would change according to context... they'd help navigate a list when scrolling through a list and perform their usual track functions otherwise. I know this might disturb others (who might always want these to perform track functions) so maybe this could be an option? [slim] Thanks Slim Devices / Logitech!
I meant to write this as soon as I got my Duet (last Friday) but am only just now pulling myself away from it long enough to write anything ;-). A bit of background -- my only experiencing with streaming audio was with a Netgear MP101 going to a J. River Media Center backend. I have a library of just over 45,000 songs. The MP101 experience was frustrating.. a lot of times it worked but rarely survived an entire evening without having to reboot either the MP101 itself or Media Center... not exactly a real plug and play solution. Just before Christmas I was about to pull the trigger on a Sonos system -- and just as I was getting ready, they decided to no longer sell directly to Canada... and with no distributor near me it looked like I was without options. Ironically, someone on the Sonos forum pointed me in this direction, mentioning the upcoming "Jive" release. So I found myself here, reading everything I could. The price looked right and unlike the Sonos, it looked like I'd have no issues with Library size etc. Eventually, after installing SC7 and getting up to speed (and opening a couple of QA issues) I jumped in for a pre-order. So now that I have my Duet, I can tell you it exceeds all expectations. The pictures don't do this thing justice -- it is much nice looking than I've seen in pictures... overall, the build quality is excellent. The experience is better than expected too. I find the web interface to be a little slow and clunky (but very impressive given what one has to work with in a browser) but the controller is an absolute joy to use... speedy and responsive. I've been tinkering and playing with this thing for four days now and have had no glitches at all... it just works. I love the community aspect -- the open source server, the active forums and the responsive bug tracking system and QA people. I opened three issues prior to the SC7 release and on each occasion, emails flew back and forth until we found the root issues... excellent. To top it all off, when the pre-order shipments got delayed, you guys made a very classy move and shipped for free! So thanks guys for an excellent product and a fantastic experience. Since Friday, three other people in my office have placed orders... so I hope this thing proves to be smash success for you guys. I'm really getting > frustrated. Which web interface... SqueezeCenter or SqueezeNetwork? Here's what I would try: - Power off the Receiver and leave it off. - Make sure your SB3 is connected to SqueezeCenter and that it has a name. - Using the IR remote, verify that the SB3 is able to play music from the server. - Perform a factory reset on the Controller (hold the + key while cycling the power--I usually remove the battery--and keep it held down until the Logitech logo appears). - Follow the steps to set up the Controller, making sure you're connecting to the right network (I know this sounds silly, but you can have an issue if you are using a default SSID.) - Skip the Setup Receiver step - If your server is listed on the Music Source screen, select it now. If it's not, then the Controller and server aren't on speaking terms. Do not select SN... contact Technical Support and have them help you. - At this point, you should have control of the SB3 using the Controller... if not, then even though the server was listed, there's something preventing the server and Controller from speaking. At that point, I'm out of ideas and you'll really need to elevate this to our Technical Support team. - Assuming you could control the SB3, power up the SBR. Perform a factory reset by holding down the button for 6 seconds. - On the Controller, go to *Settings > Advanced > Set up Receiver* and select your Receiver. After it completes the setup, and the button is a dimly lit white color, you should have control of both the SB3 and the SBR. If not, call Technical Support. This certainly isn't a common or well-known issue, so I really appreciate your patience and help in tracking it down. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of it and either correct the bug (if we find there is one) or figure out what happened and make sure other users get through this difficulty faster. -=> Jim -- JimC "well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that." -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44418 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

m4a is plain unencrypted MPEG4 audio. At a given bitrate, it is supposedly better than mp3. Your ears may vary. But it is still lossy and not as 'portable' as mp3... (ie, your car stereo/non-ipod-portable are unlikely to play it, nor will your DVD player, etc.) The advantage mp3 has is that it is so common to find a player, so if it is lossy, I still want mp3. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44666 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You know this has been a question of mine ever since SS's MySQL was first installed as a service... Over the weekend I installed the SC 7.0 release using the Windows installer, then I ran the service enabler. I decided to let it keep running with the bundled MySQL rather than the other MySQL server that I have running on the machine. This is the first time in quite a while that I've had the EXE version of SS/SC running. What I'm seeing is that the bundled MySQL service is being started and stopped whenever the SqueezeCenter service is started and stopped. Is that the expected behavior? If so, the question I then have is what's advantage? It's too bad that the scan status is reported like that... it makes it appear to have completed when obviously it died. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44661 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Fast-forward/rewind redesign
I don't mind the current design that bad, but find it finicky to use. I do like the audio feedback. I suggest the following: 1. Display the elapsed time of a song (minutes:seconds) on the player window in Slimserver. (I've always missed this.) 2. When the << or >> is clicked display the resulting speed and direction such as: 2X> 8X< and show the resulting elapsed time as the scan progresses. 3. When not scanning blank out the "2x>" type indicator. Re: [slim] SB3 stops randomly
problem: mid-song from my mostly-FLAC (some MP3) music library drops out for 10 seconds. stutters a bit. then resumes playing. doesn't happen reliably (i.e. not at the same point in a given song. not when it's an all FLAC playlist. etc.) but does happen every third song (give or take). doesn't happen when listening to internet radio over SqueezeNetwork my set-up: SC7. firmware 86. music library on wired NAS device. everything else is now wired too (see below). SC7 is playing on a new dual-core Vista machine. first solution was to wire the player and SqueezeCenter. did that. still stutters mid-song. next was to set static IPs for player, SC and NAS. still stutters. finally, try turning off McAffee. still stutters. conclusions i've reached (maybe wrong, but based on my limited experience) - it's not a wireless issue since i'm now fully wired. it's not the firewall. it's not the library itself. what is it!? this wasn't an issue when my set-up was wireless with 6.5.4 on my old XP machine. got a new computer and, well, here we are. i'm at a loss. thoughts / help is appreciated! -- conradbain conradbain's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13217 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43298 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I think there have been reports of slowness from people running SC7 on non-dedicated machines. The shift of processing burden from server to web browser is not as important if they are running on the same machine. One way to mitigate this is to use the classic skin instead of the new browser-buster default. Also using the most modern browser you can that has a fast javascript engine will help. Opera and FF3 (beta 4 out today) would be good candidates. Ben ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I too, am involved with company email systems. Most spam filters allow only 5-10% of the email through. There is an "arms race" going on between ISPs and Spam generators. Email servers can drop mail for a host of non Spam reasons. Combined, it's amazing how much email actually makes it through. The bottom line is that, as bobkoure stated, email is not a reliable method of communication. Re: [slim] iTunes artwork - how to make it all available in SlimServer/SqueezeCenter in Mac OS X
Hi there, All other functionality in CoverScout is limited (this is a demo). With respect to new albums, I guess you have to run the whole process again. But it should be faster second time, since it'll probably only do the copying for albums where the only attached artwork is the one downloaded from iTunes Music Store... If you wish to use it for chasing missing album art, you can try using the demo (Select: show songs with missing cover art in one of the on-screen drop-down menus)...and register if you like it and wish to do it for your whole music collection. There are other apps that can add album artwork as well...used something called "MPFreaker" a while back. It has similar funtionality to CoverScout in this respect. Also shareware. There's also some freeware that can be used for this - e.g. Clutter or some "Add Album Artwork" Dashboard widgets. But they're all more manual than MPFreaker / CoverScout. Let's turn it round - what makes it a compilation? Does every track have to be by a different artist? What about when there are 10 tracks with 2 tracks by the same artist? Compilation? What about 3 tracks? 4, 5... where's the breakpoint? SC doesn't force that decision - it says it's a compilation if all the tracks aren't by the same artist and then allows you to override this by using ALBUMARTIST or COMPILATION. Hi kdf - I changed those exact things and it didn't work. I don't know how it could be due to the quirkyness of the format since I've done nothing with the shorten binary and am using the same .shn file to test. I wonder if there is a temporary file that is created as part of the process that and the write fails because the squeezecenter user doesn't have permission to write to the location. Once significant difference between slimserver and squeezecenter is the fact that a different user account is used. Reading the bug report, I see it was quite deliberate to remove it. Actually the problem is the braindead automatic Compilation detection in SqueezeServer. (They should add a switch to disable it!!!) If you have an album by Artist A, and just one track is played by guest artist B, the album is listed/sorted as compilation. Thanks to your links I've found that you can control this by adding the (nonstandard) TCP or TCMP MP3 compilation field and set it to false, thereby telling SqueezeBox that this is really NOT a compilation. Functionality that would enable to listen to certain track (within a current playlist), wonder somewhere else, pick up and start playing some other track, change your mind and jump back to the track that was playing earlier (ideally regenerating a playlist that was current at the time). Just like TV remote remembers prior chanell and lets you get back to it. I see it being convenient for listening to a locl music, but crucial when it comes to Internet radio. Quite often, while listening to a certain station, I'd start looking to something else, go quite a distance browsing through a radio hierarcy, try to play some other station, just to realize it isn't working. I admit that I actually like the volume control and use it, even though I have a high-end system where I can hear the difference. The user (or tagger) has provided SC with conflicting data: it is therefore up to SC to decide which to follow, and it is free to just make it up. Given your dataset above, what would be the correct artist sort? Or would that make for two artists (which would break a bunch of people...) As for ways to abuse this for fun and profit: Artist="Frank Sinatra" ArtistSort="Sinatra, Frank" Artist="Antontio Carlos Jobim" ArtistSort="Jobim, Antonio Carlos" Artist="Frank Sinatra;Antonio Carlos Jobim" -noartistsort- With a bit of magic you're past the unpredictable nature of 1-to-1 matches on artist/artistsort. The last set will be properly credited to both artists (no need to make a fake artist 'Sinatra & Jobim' artist) and sorted correctly. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44638 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

When selecting "Music Source" during initial set up, you're given a choice of selecting your local PC running SqueezeCenter or SqueezeNetwork. Depending on your choice, you may not be able to see all of your players on the Duet Controller: - If you choose SqueezeCenter you can see your SqueezeCenter-connected players. But you won't see your SqueezeNetwork-connected players. - If you choose SqueezeNetwork you can see your SqueezeNetwork-connected players. But (as you can guess) you won't be able to see your SqueezeCenter-connected players. That's currently the way it works. I think we didn't make this characteristic as clear to users as we could have. It also seems to be tripping up more people than anyone here at Logitech expected. For now, you'll need to choose your music source to see a specific group of players. To switch the Duet Controller between SqueezeCenter and SqueezeNetwork, go to Settings->Music Source and pick your source. Alternatively, you can have all of your players on SqueezeCenter, since all of the music services (Pandora, Rhapsody, etc.) are now available there. You don't have to switch between SqueezeCenter and SqueezeNetwork for those features anymore. The team will need to review this and figure out how to resolve this. I would think that the user-desired solution would be "have all of my players visible all of the time". Please reply and let me know if my guess is correct. [slim] Controller Wireless Question
My parents are looking to outfit their new house in Mexico with a multi-room music system. The house has concrete walls and a concrete floor between the levels which will affect the wireless signal. Were does the controller pick up the wireless signal from; the Linksys Router or from the Receiver that will be in each room? If it is from the Receiver, then we should be OK because my parents will be using it in the room with the controller. If it is from the router which will be in a different room, then we may have a problem. It was deliberate, more or less for the very reasons you are seeing. SHN is a broken format. The only known way to get duration, size and bitrate data (required for SB to play tracks) is to extract to WAV and redirect to /dev/null (a problem on windows), then it's extracted to WAV again for playback. The header is also different depending on versions. Some of the things that never worked right (and consequently had no official support) were removed for SC7 (note several skins which are no longer with us).
