There have been lots of posts about suitable replacement SB3 PSUs (and
which better the supplied one). Try searching the forums.

I went for the one from Farnell - it's certainly a lot heftier than the
Logitech one:

channel 11 and see if that improves things. You could also see if you
can figure out which direction the various networks are (based on
changes in signal strength), and relocate your equipment based on what
you find. Or just put up a big metal shield on that side of your house
 ;)

Not sure I get this completely, the networks at 6 and 11 interferes
with mine at 1? I thought the whole idea of channels would be to avoid
interference... Anyway, I tried switching it to 11 and let's see what
happens. This morning everything cluttered up again (even the laptops)
for like 5-10 minutes and then everything was fine (this was still
running at channel 1)

Cobber is not an option as the WAF of this is much much lower than

Overall I'm pleased with the Controller and have no regret whatsoever in
buying one. If I'm being fussy I would say that it is sometimes hard to
move one line up or down with the control wheel but I'm getting used to
the action. I would also like an improved wol capability which works
even if the unit has been turned off for any reason.

With regard to scratches on the front face, I really don't know what
people are doing with their units to get these - sliding it face down
across the table? I'm not particulary careful with mine but I do
ensure it's face up when I put it down. Not noticed a single scratch
on the face after a months intensive use.

Re: [slim] Sychronization with SqueezeCenter 7.0?

2008-04-18 Thread nwplace

I have also posted here due to synchronisation problems with
SqueezeCenter 7.0 and have not resolved them, so I would like to
establish if there are any similarities.

Will the SB3 players synchronise when Softsqueeze isn't running or is
powered off? I haven't actually tried Softsqueeze since upgrading to
SC7.0, although like yourself, I found that synchronisation between
players (up to 3 x SB3) and/or players and Softsqueeze was very good in
previous versions of Slimserver (certainly 6.3.1 onwards).

What operating system are you running? I have 2 PCs, one running
Ubuntu and the other XP.

On the Ubuntu machine, the players will sync with no issues if and only
if SqueezeCenter has very recently been restarted. If it has been
running for anything approaching a day then the players will not sync
and I find the same 2 players will be about 1 second out of sync whilst
the other is always in excess of 3 seconds.

On the XP machine I simply cannot get the players to synchronise at
all; restarting SqueezeCenter or rebooting the PC makes no difference
and I get similar delays between players as those described above.

As you've probably found, most of the questions regarding
synchronisation have related to Softsqueeze and there has been very
little in the way problems syncing hardware players using SC7.0. One
post did however suggest the problem was either overcome or much
improved when the lastfm plugin was disabled, so that might be worth
trying.

[slim] Duet and Group Compilation Albums

finally received my Squeezebox Duet.
Now I noticed that the Squeezebox Controller lists all Artists from my

list about 260 Artists. (I have Group compilation albums together and
List albums by band activated).

How can I get the Duet Controller to show the same Artist list as the
web interface and the Squeezebox 3.

Running:
SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 17793 - Windows Server 2003 - EN - cp1252

[slim] SB3 loses wireless signal, shaking restores it

2008-04-18 Thread 4mula1

My parents have an SB3 and lately it's developed an issue where it fall
off the wireless network. I found that if I shake it things begin to
work again. I go into Current Settings to view the wireless signal
strength. When it's off the network the signal strength is 0%, pick it
up and hold it, still 0%, give it a shake, 60%+.

To try to determine whether or not it's a problem with their wireless
router I brought over one of my SB3s and put it in the same location as
the other SB3. Mine worked flawlessly, and theirs required the shake at
one point. I am pretty confident that their wireless router is working
fine (my wifi enabled phone had no issues either).

Their SB3 also fails to connect to the network after a firmware upgrade
or regular restart. Give it a shake and everything is kosher.

I'm not sure what to do, but opinions are wanted. It was a Christmas
gift in 2006 so I have a feeling it's out of warranty.

Any thoughts?

Re: [slim] SB3 loses wireless signal, shaking restores it

2008-04-18 Thread aubuti

At some point after Logitech bought SD they went from a 1-year to a
2-year warranty. I think the 2-year took effect before Christmas 2006,
so it probably is still under warranty, unless you do your Christmas
shopping really early. Even if it is out of warranty, Logi/SD will do
most out-of-warranty repairs for US$90 plus shipping.

And, if it's as simple as a loose wireless card in the SB3, you could
probably fix it yourself if you're handy with a screwdriver (I think
you need a torx).

Good luck.

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter 7.0 and Mac OS X

2008-04-18 Thread exile

it seems as though a clean install is helpful on osx. here's
instructions from a previous thread on osx problems.

To perform a clean installation of our SqueezeCenter software, follow
the steps below:

1. First, go to System Preferences, click on SqueezeCenter and click on
Stop Server, close System Preferences.

2. Remove any of the following files and folders:

- Home Library Application Support SqueezeCenter Folder
- Home Library PreferencePanes SqueezeCenter.prefPane
- Home Library Caches SqueezeCenter folder

- Macintosh HD Library PreferencePanes SqueezeCenter.prefPane
(may or may not exist)

Next...

3. Reinstall SqueezeCenter from:

http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html

4. After the install completes, the SqueezeCenter Preference Pane
should come up, click on “Start Server,” then click on “Web Access”

Note: If you click on “Web Access” and you receive an error, wait a few
seconds before you try again as the application may still be starting.

5. SqueezeCenter will start the Setup Wizard and you will have to enter
your SqueezeNetwork log in information and specify your Music Library
and Playlists folder paths. After that, SqueezeCenter will rescan your
music Library.

Once SqueezeCenter finishes scanning your music library, verify that
everything is working by playing a file. You may need to update your
player once you get connected.

that Homeplug (networking over home electrical lines) has a few big
advantages as a no new wires technology, especially (1) the wires are
in every room, (2) it's here now, and (3) it's pretty cheap. To me, #1
is a tough one to beat because I have exactly two rooms wired with coax
(for tv and internet), compared to every room (and even the backyard)
wired with electrical outlets. Someone whose whole house is already
wired with coax would likely see things differently.

Of course, the big advantage of MoCA would be the throughput capacity.
Verizon is offering FIOS in some areas, but I don't know if they're
into MoCA at all.

Don't put too much stock in my views though. I once thought HomePNA,
which uses phone lines, was going to take off much more than it did
(which was not at all).

[slim] Problem Launching SoftSqueeze From Batch File

2008-04-18 Thread meep

Hi

I've set up a batch file to launch an instance of SoftSqueeze. (I'm
doing tis as I want my server to launch multiple instances at startup
for a multi-room set-up).

Anyway, the following command line in the batch file results in a
permanent message connecting to slimserver...;

java -Dslimserver=localhost -Dmacaddress=f7:25:9d:78:9f:65
-Dskins=headless -Daudio.mixer=M-Audio Delta 410 3/4 -jar
softsqueeze.jar

Removing the headless option as follows results in the errors listed
below dumped at the command line;

java -Dslimserver=localhost -Dmacaddress=f7:25:9d:78:9f:65
-Daudio.mixer=M-Audio Delta 410 3/4 -jar softsqueeze.jar

In this second instance, SoftSqueeze UI opens but only one instance, a
second instance will not launch until I dismiss the first.

This is on Windows Server 2003, Slimserver 7, Softsqueeze 3.6, latest
Java runtime as downloaded today.

Here's the complete error generated when no -Dskins param is defined;

Help appreciated

Peter

Re: [slim] SB3 loses wireless signal, shaking restores it

2008-04-18 Thread JimC

It sounds like the wireless card is loose. You can certainly RMA the
unit, but you could--if you're comfortable--open up the case and reseat
the wireless card to see if it corrects the problem. It's not that
hard, though you have to be careful not to damage the front panel; try
heating it with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive before removing
it.

After that, it's just a couple of screws to get the case open. Take
the wireless card out, clean the edge connector, and then reseat the
card. If you have it, use compressed air (or a camera lens brush/bulb)
to blow out the connector on the SB3 circuit board before reseating the
card.

Could you give us some more system details so we can answer your
question properly? As an example, do you have a wireless network in
your home that the server is on? Or can you get ethernet to your router
and second SB3. And I am not saying you need two SB3s, because you can
always move it between the two places but as an example I have my
Transporter in my listening room, Duet in the living room, an SB3 in
the bedroom, an SB3 in the den, and what I call my mobile SB3 that I
move between the shop, garage, outside deck, or anywhere I need music
but do not have an SB3 already setup.

You could use two computers but why would you? It is easier to buy a
wireless router, connect it to your server, and either move the SB3
from location to location within range of your WLAN or buy multiple
SB3s or buy a Duet with multiple SBRs. The server can easily feed music
to 10 or more Squeezebox devices over a wireless LAN while even playing
different music on each player.

There's tons of info on the net. Just google for homeplug or
homeplug ethernet and you'll find lots of sites, both for sales and
for the technology itself (as easy as www.homeplug.org). Most major
suppliers of computer peripherals carry them and several major network
hardware manufacturers make them (Netgear, Cisco-Linksys, Belkin,
etc.). I've never heard of running them over coax, and I don't see why
you would want to. The electrical/mains outlet is there, and the
adapter is made with an electrical plug.

You can stream to iTunes as you are doing, and you can have SC update

Are you sure there isn't a mixup about describing how Homeplug works
like the original Ethernet which used coax whereby all users are
sharing bandwidth on the coax-cable/mains wiring. This is unlike
twisted pair Ethernet.

I can't see how Homeplug could use coax seems Homeplug is designed to
work over mains and the network connection is through the mains sockets
which also supplies power to the unit.

Re: [slim] Wireless - yes, Homeplug - No

2008-04-18 Thread Peter
bpa wrote:
Are you sure there isn't a mixup about describing how Homeplug works
like the original Ethernet which used coax whereby all users are
sharing bandwidth on the coax-cable/mains wiring. This is unlike
 twisted pair Ethernet.

The difference is not in the sharing, the difference is in the cable
medium. There's no reason coax-ethernet couldn't be run in a start
topology like twisted pair with a coax-switch to divide the data. In
fact twisted-pair ethernet used to share the bandwidth when everyone was
still using hubs instead of switches. Switches were extremely expensive
once.

I can't see how Homeplug could use coax seems Homeplug is designed to
work over mains and the network connection is through the mains sockets
which also supplies power to the unit.

That sounds strange to me as well. I'm very lucky that the phone sockets
in my new house were wired with cat5 in a star topology. It was very
easy to put in a patch panel and a switch and replace the wall plates.
The phones run very well wireless DECT, with computer data, wired is
always best.

with regard to using coax. The advantage of coax is the bandwidth which
has perked my interest. There are a bunch of products out there but I
was hoping to get info outside of the manufacturers to get a better
idea of how well this works before dropping more money down the drain.
One thing that makes me skeptical is that thte fact that many people do
not seem top be aware of this availability. I'll be back if I find
 something useful.
If you want reviews of homeplug, then google homeplug reviews, and
you'll get several useful links, like this one
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3243_7-5021351-1.html. But if you are
looking for homeplug+coax, then I doubt you'll find much (if anything)
because that's not the way it works. Homeplug is designed to be run
over electrical wiring, not coax. That could be why not many people
have heard of homeplug+coax.

If you are determined to use coax, then continue your earlier search
for info on multimedia over coax (MoCA). There are various sites with
info, but there is little in the way of reviews because there is little
in the way of products (see http://www.mocalliance.org/en/index.asp).

Or, if you are going to pull cable, do as Peter recommends and use
cat5.

Re: [slim] Wireless - yes, Homeplug - No

2008-04-18 Thread denmennis

I think that Homeplug got into coax when MoCA became a competive threat.
There are not many adapters that I could find but Itellon, Zyxel and one
obscure manufacturer (product no longer available) made or makes hybrid
powerline/coax adpters that can be used either over your wiring or your
coax cable. The advantage of using home wiring is that it is more
ubiquitous with few if any dead zones. The advantage of coax is the
speed which can theoretically reach 135Mbps...in reality the speed is
more in the range of 90-100Mbps. It is also virtually free of static
and interference as opposed to home wiring.

The big question is why is the technology not being used? To me the
idea sounds almost too good to be true but no harm in hoping.
Meanwhile, I wait for my d-link wireless router to be delivered.

Why bother with Coax - the new Homeplug AV standard theoretically
delivers 200Mbps over mains.

A great wayt to use Homeplug is to allow you to locate a WAP closer to
your devices so by using Homeplug and Wifi together you get better
coverage for your Wifi devices.

I'll speculate the following:
1) most people don't have coax running all over their homes (I'd bet
more have cat5 than coax)
2) few people would saturate homeplug, ethernet, or wireless yet.
Lossless audio doesn't get near saturating those bandwidths, and how
many people are running multiple HD video streams around the home?
3) the equal-or-better bandwidth with newer homeplug
4) few coax products out there (likely because of #1, #2, #3).

[slim] Using Squeezecenter to Stream Gapless MP3s to Tversity - Can it be done?

servers do not offer gapless playback, and most of the focus of
development is on video. I'm wondering if I could use Squeezecenter to
stream my music files (gaplessly), and have Tversity pick up the stream
and transmit it to my UPNP appliances just like it was an internet
radio signal, although with native high quality bitrate. Can this be
done, and if so how? Thanks for your suggestions.

Yes, you can just delete it. You'll probably have to stop

I would think a 28GB log is pretty unlikely unless you've raised the
logging levels on at least one of the logging settings. Before
shutting down SC7 you'll probably want to reset them. The default
