[slim] Can Squeezebox disable WOL?

2008-06-13 Thread Jonit

My squeezebox seems to disable the WOL Feature the NIC of my PC?

I have an vista ultimate pc running squeezecenter 7.1, i have so far
been using the PC only as an media-center, but now it is also running
my new squeezebox/center!
My other pc in the house automaticaly wakes up the media-center from s3
standby when they acces network shares via on media-center´s IP address!
It has been working flawiously so far, but then i got my squeezebox! And
now it dosent work at all.

When i turn on the squeezebox on for the first time it turns on the
media-center as weel but, next time i try this nothing happens,
media-center wont wake up any more, and the other pc´s in the house
can´t either wake the media-center up anymore. But if i turn off the
media-center completely and unplug the power cord, The NIC then seems
to reset, and after a reboot of the media-center, it can be rewoken
again from other pc´s, but only until i start the squeezebox again,
then the same happens, the NIC WOL seems disabled!

Any suggestions?

My setup is:
PC: Windows Vista Ultimate Running squeezecenter 7.1
Motherboard: Asus A8n vm-csm integrated NIC, WOL enabled in bios.
Logitech Squeezebox Classic, firmware 88

Jonas Winther

[slim] Cover Artwork incorrect only on DUET controller

2008-06-13 Thread oscarg

Hi Guys, had the Squeezebox Duet for a couple of days and REALLY
enjoying it.
One little bug thats bugging me is the following..

I have used MP3Tag to put artwork with the MP3s and by and large this
works fine. But on about 10% of the artwork, the controller displays the
wrong artwork (ie the artwork for a different album).

However the Web Interface shows the Correct Artwork ALL the TIME.
(which implies it is not a problem with the tagged artwork, but how the
handheld controller is getting its info).

Has anyone else had this problem??

I am running software version 7.01 (thought I would try this forum
before I resort to Bta software) and the hardware seemed to download
the latest BIOS when it was installed. The reciever is running firmware
23

Greatly appreciate any input.

Thanks
Oscar

I had this. It turned out that there was an old shortcut to a second
drive that I had deleted...but even though it was deleted, the scanner
still found it and used it, doubling up the tracks. Check all your
drives for hidden files (shortcuts). Also, if windows, make sure the
recycle bin is empty.

To eliminate things, point SC at an empty directory/folder as your
music folder and rescan...that should clear out the database. Then add
in the primary drive and make sure that a scan picks that up correctly.
Then add in a shortcut to the secondary drive.

The tracks you purchased and downloaded will be DRM infected, there is
no way to play them directly with any of the Squeeze hardware.

The only way round it is to burn them to an Audio CD (if the Rhapsody
software will let you do this) and the re-rip.

Streaming Rhapsody stations is completely different to playing
discreate tracks.

What would you like to see it do, rattle off the features list.

Thanks for asking. Here is a quick dirty list. To see how these
might might look on the actual interface, reference iTunes,
MediaMonkey, Media Player.

1. List the library in its entirety on one screen, with sortable
columns for Title, Album, Artist, Genre, Length, etc. MediaMonkey also
shows the source path as a column, which I think is a major bonus for
large libraries.

2. When searching, use the same screen as above, narrowing the results
as the user enters characters.

3. Add a new playlist without affecting the currently active playlist,
and eliminate the need to explicitly save the new playlist.

4. Drag (or right-click-add) songs to the new playlist. Sequentially
number the songs in a playlist (this simplifies re-ordering on long
lists.) As a side feature, make all playlists always visible so a song
can be easily moved to any playlist.

5. Allow any playlist to be displayed and edited without affecting the
active (playing) playlist. Again, just auto-save instead of requiring
an explicit step.

6. Allow tag editing (right-click on Properties, Info, etc.) for all
major formats. Filename editing would also be cool -- useful for
fixing typos, etc.

IMHO most of these things are hard to achieve in a browser interface.
We're running into the limitations of a browser as a client. SoftSqueeze
doesn't make things much better because it tries to be just like a
player (with its user interface limitations) and SqueezePlay will
probably suffer from the same problems by trying to be a Controller.
What we need is a good PC based client that makes optimal use of a PC's
memory, mouse and keyboard and acts as a client to the SqueezeCenter
server. Something like Moose, I haven't tried Moose for a while so
perhaps Moose is what I'm looking for.

Bottom line is that the Slim PC-experience is rather slim.

X.

Re: [slim] Poll: Which user category do you belong to ?

2008-06-13 Thread Phil Meyer
Well, I disagree that Logitech should now need to know SC's user base. It
surely knows this already - it's for the categories of user that it designed
each product to be targetted for. Transporters for Audiophiles, SB3 for
everyone else.

So IMHO, knowing which user category you are targeting with a specific
feature is very important even thought the product itself needs to work
for multiple user categories.
And I think that the users are not easy to categorise into 4 classes. Many
will be a bit of all to some level, and features will overlap many classes. A
survey to people that browse the forum (and geeks that read mail!) is not going
to answer any questions. SC needs to cater for all.

What is good to know is what features/enhancement/bug fixes users want most.
That is meant to be known by raising and voting upon bugs in bugzilla.

Does anybody know how you can exclude a genre from MusicIP mixes using

Yes, you need to create a filter or series of filters. In the MusicIP
GUI (assuming you can access this) right click in the top left pane and
create new filter. Then add the conditions that meet that filter (genre
does not contain Christmas for example). Save it. The filter will then
be available in SC (usually without a rescan in my experience, running
headless). If you select the filter before mixing, it will mix only
from tracks which meet the filter requirements.

One caveat here - at the moment, I don't think you can access/change
filters from the Duet Controller, whereas you can from the old SB
remote when you start a mix. For that reason, I have a general ignore
excluded tracks filter, which leaves out any material which I might
want to listen to every now and then, but don't want mixed in as a
matter of course.

I also find filters very useful for when I only want tracks mixed from
my own music library, not from my other half's. (Filter=tracks which
have the filepath to my music only).

Re: [slim] Spent 3 hours with tech support last night...

2008-06-13 Thread cparker

Like it, this thread has turned into an IP masterclass ;)

Why not just set address reservations in your DHCP setup, most new
routers support this, just add the MAC address of the network card and
each time it asks for an IP address the router will return the same IP
address linked to the MAC. Therefore you cover both static and dynamic
allocation requirements!

Also set your reservation lease times to weeks and it will pretty much
have the same affect.

On another note, a dedicated server is always the way to go, behind a
router with a hardware firewall built in, then you dont need a software
firewall or antivirus crippling the machine into the floor. Most viri
come via email or from web browsing therefore if you have a dedicated
server its highly unlikely it will ever get affected.

Cheerio

[slim] SB V3 loosing all settings. With Bose Wave

2008-06-13 Thread bret

Hello All,

I wonder if anyone can help?

I have three SB V3's and a SR and Controller running at home.

My bedroom SB V3 has been running happily plugged into a Bose wave
radio for the last 18months. Sitting on top of the Bose.

Last week I upgraded the Bose Wave Radio to a new Bose Wave Radio one
with DAB digital radio MP3 cdr support. Since then every day or so
the SB V3 looses all settings. This often happens when the Bose Wave
radio switches to DAB digital mode.

The SB V3 looses all settings wireless region WPA keys static IP's DNS
everything - It's a pain to renter all this every day using the remote.

I thought the problem must have been the SB V3 - So I swapped it with
one from another room. I still have the same problem so two SB V3's
work fine when away from the Bose but both loose all settings when
sitting ontop on the Bose Wave radio for a day or so.

Problem must be interferance field from the Bose wave radio or a remote
control IR conflict causing the SB V3 to factory reset?

Anyone seen this before? New generation Bose Wave Radio's and SB V3's
causing problems?

The tracks is called Whatever Would Robert Have Said?, and as the

To eliminate the remote being the problem, you could simulate changing

The other option that the Bose is so badly designed it is managing to

of the 200+ albums. I cannot figure out why those 8 albums were chosen
- some were from artists that I had multiple albums for. Even more
interesting is looking inside squeezecenter, and beginning at the home
page and drilling down through the music folder which is the name of
the folder on the external HD, all of the artists I have are displayed
and then drilling down through the artist reveals every album I have.
But I cannot drill down and see the tracks.

Yeah, most surge suppressor manufacturers offer this warranty, but
lots of luck collecting on it! :) They rarely pay out on such claims
(the industry in general, not just Belkin) as they have LOTS of wiggle
room and many outs in the fine print.

Typical example of the hoops you must jump through to even get them to
look at a claim: usually you must place a separate claim for each
device that was *zapped* while connected to the surge suppressor. Five
devices = five separate claims. Try reading the claims form, claim
submission rules and all it's fine print.:)

Unrelated to SD's or even computers: Here is a funny but typical
lifetime product warranty for a consumer product. I purchased those
Triple Edge windshield wipers for my car a lng time ago, they do
work quite well. They came with a lifetime Warranty as follows:
Just send us your used Triple Edge wipers plus $19.95 SH

Well, there are two catches to this Lifetime Warranty
1. What if it rains or snows while your car wipers are being exchanged
via mail.6 to 8 weeks processing time?
2. Guess how much these wipers sell for new in the
stores..yup$19.95

I wouldn't mind if there was some way to add a track/album to a fix

- open a playlist with current to-dos
- add the offending track/album
- save
... but that's way more complicated than just writing on a piece of

A lot of people use the Zapped Songs playlist for doing this. I'm not
one of them, so I forget the details, but I think it's as simple as
selecting the offending track in a playlist and hitting the + key. A
big limitation is that the offending track has to be *in* the playlist.
If you happen to spot the erroneous tags when browsing tracks you would
need to add the track to the playlist and then zap it, which is just as
cumbersome as what you've described.

Re: [slim] Cover Artwork incorrect only on DUET controller

2008-06-13 Thread aubuti

I had a similar problem and concluded that the artwork cache on the
controller had become corrupted. I did a factory reset of the
controller (power off, then hold down the + key while powering on --
at least I *think* that was the sequence) and all was fine. The
downside is you have to re-enter your wireless password and any other
customization you have done.

I would think that there is a file on the controller with the artwork
cache that you could delete after ssh'ing to the controller, but I
looked and couldn't find the right file.

Could it be that Windows Media Player has added DRM to the previous
albums?

Squeeze hardware will not play DRM content.

There was at least one version of WMP that had DRM enabled by default,
even for tracks ripped from your own CDs. I don't think this is the
case now. So if Windows has updated its copy of WMP the setting could
easily have been disabled.

[slim] Poor performance on my Mac

2008-06-13 Thread jarome

I have two SqueezeCenters (I hate the new name BTW--much harder to
remember and type). One is on my 8-core MacPro with 8 GB memory. The
other is on my quad core SUSE 10.3 machine. My library is on an
internal drive on each machine.
The Mac server is a dog. It takes 5-10 seconds to respond to commands
to play new music. As a result, I often hit the button's twice and get
things screwed up.

For example, SoftSqueeze running on the Mac is faster by far connecting
to the Linux machine, rather that the server on the same machine. Ditto
for remote SqueezeBoxes.

Why?

Well, that jack on your marine stereo will accept the SB output just as

I'm an SB3 guy - but a remote that worked all round the house / office

That said, I couldn't wait and was one of the first to pre-order the

Well, I disagree that Logitech should now need to know SC's user base.
It surely knows this already - it's for the categories of user that it
designed each product to be targetted for. Transporters for
 Audiophiles, SB3 for everyone else.

So this basically means that SB3 is designed for my 90 year old
grandmother ?
And every new feature in SqueezeCenter must be designed to work good
both for me and her ?

(Sorry, couldn't resist it)

Philip Meyer;311423 Wrote:

So IMHO, knowing which user category you are targeting with a
 specific
feature is very important even thought the product itself needs to
 work
 for multiple user categories.
And I think that the users are not easy to categorise into 4 classes.
Many will be a bit of all to some level, and features will overlap many
 classes.
So maybe the user categories I defined was the wrong ones ?

Better suggestions that would fit everyone better would be appreciated,
so if anyone has ideas how to divide the users into different
categories, please post.

[slim] Rhapsody is just starter last night

2008-06-13 Thread PRGeno

I've been happily using Rhapsody on all of my SB3 units through SC7.01
for quite awhile. It has been very reliable and has become one of my
primary sources when using my SqueezeBoxes.

All of a sudden, starting yesterday evening, I can no longer access
anything on Rhapsody. I can look through channels, search for music,
and see all the tracks in my Rhapsody library, but whenever I try to
actually play something I get the following error:

Internal Rhapsody Error: Unable to Authenticate user

I did a search here, and found several threads about Rhapsody issues,
but nothing recent, and nothing that helped resolve this issue for me.

Everything else in my SB/SC system seems to be working fine, including
my local music library, all my Internet Radio and other services
(including Pandora, Slacker, Live365, RadioTime, Radio IO).

I can access, and play all music on Rhapsody from the native Rhapsody
application on my desktop, which is the same machine running SC. But I
cannot play anything Rhapsody related through SB/SC/SN.

The only thing new, is I installed the latest version of iTunes on that
machine (which is a powerful HP Workstation class machine running Vista
Ultimate SP1). I can't see how this could contribute to this issue,
but I'm grasping at straws right now.

Anyone else currently having this issue? I'd like to determine if this
is localized to my situation, or if this is a wider spread issue.

[slim] Faulty Batch of transporters? or just poor QC

2008-06-13 Thread Rodney_Gold

I bought a transporter beginning of this yr , knob was faulty out the
box and then a few months in the top 1/2 of the right display failed ,
it's a mission for me to return it to the supplier as they are 1600km
from me, but I did so and they swapped it out for a new one...
I have had the new one for 4 days and the top 1/3rd of the left hand
display has failed?
What gives ? Am I just unlucky? Is there a faulty batch? Is there a
generic problem with the displays or their chips? Is there inadequate
QC?
This is a total inconvenience to me.Im really annoyed.

If it failed after 4 days, you just had bad luck. It was obviously
working when you received the unit. It's kind of impossible to test for
failures... after testing has been completed. :)

Please call support again, and we will arrange another replacement.
It's still under warranty.

Sorry for inconvenience!

Re: [slim] Poor performance on my Mac

2008-06-13 Thread Eric Seaberg

Something else is wrong! I've been running SC on a Mac MINI with 2GB
RAM for over 1-1/2 years, NEVER turning it off. I'm even running the
server at a performance setting of -16 (HIGH) and it never chokes
feeding a Transporter and SB3 with unlimited bandwidth. I also stream
to my office without hiccups, even with it having to transcode from
FLAC or ALAC lossless to MP3 for the streams.

Your MacPro is certainly bounds above my MINI. Can you give us any
more info? What version of SC are you running? I had problems with
7.01 (the official) and went back to an earlier Beta version of 7.01
and the problems disappeared. Can you get back to 7.0 somehow?

2008-06-13 Thread MuckleEck

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: Which user category do you belong to most ?

- The geek
- The audiophile
- The structured music lover
- Massmarket Joe
- Other (None of the above fits me, see wiki page before choosing
  this)

I voted Geek...although I would like to be an audiophile...my ears
aren't up to scratch and my wallet ain't fat enough. The tagger, I am
one of them too but only when I get the CDs, once they are on the box
they stay out. Couldn't be mass market JJoe!

So Geek was the only sensible choice although I would have preferred a

Had a chance to access the other machine tonight (my desktop), and this
is definitely the problem. On the machine that is not missing tracks, I
can see the song with the upside down question mark in SC.

On the other hand I could not see this track on the machine where the
tracks are missing (an old lappy) even if I tried to navigate there
through the music folder.

I renamed the file to exclude the character, rescanned on both
machines, and now it appears in both! Both machines are running XP, and
both are fully up to date. Both use Avast antivirus.

If I can't work out why this is, I guess I'm going to have to go
through all 8,000 tracks I have with explorer trying to find and rename
the 200 odd tracks that I am missing. Bummer!

Thanks for the reply. That certainly seems easy enough. I'm using
Linux, so I hope that functionality is there.

Do you know how the changes using the GUI are relected in SC? Will I
have to copy a file from where the GUI puts it to where the headless
server will want to find it?

Thanks!

i would not be so quick to assume that just b/c it has MORE tracks, it
has ALL tracks.

i would double check the track count with winamp. i have never noticed
winamp to be missing a track or file as long as it had the proper
extension, (eg. *.mp3)

you should also not assume that the one that has more tracks has all
the tracks the other one has. that would be a horrorshow for you if

shows you all the files. that isn't to say it doesn't, but i just

[slim] Favorites Crash Squeeze Center

2008-06-13 Thread brdbointx

I have been running 7.01 on my Infrant NAS without issue. I had a set of
favorites that I created by first importing the opml file from my
Squeezenetwork account. I then crated two new folders and within them I
created links to many XM Radio stations (since the duet controlled can't
see the plugin in the menu).

There has been no change in my usage or sytem installation, but
suddenly I am having a major problem with favorites. Everytime I
navigate to FAVORITES on the controller or on screen with a squeezebox,
the SqueezeCenter server disconnects and literally just hangs.

I am assuming the favorites are somehow corrupt - but I have no idea
how to clear them out and start over. Is there a file somewhere are a
way to just reset everything?

On a Windows build, no - no copying required. It appears in the MusicIP
plugin settings page of Squeezecenter as a drop down option (also
available on an SB3 by scrolling down before you initiate a mix if you
give each player access to the mix settings). Not sure about a Linux
build. However, the filter option is a parameter to the HTTP API so
should be fairly straightforward.

One other thought - I have a registration key, not sure if this is a
requirement to use filters.

Re: [slim] MusicIP question

2008-06-13 Thread Siduhe

You need to add the new music to the MusicIP library, then rescan to
pick it up in Squeezecenter. Are you running headless or not, and
using Linux or not?

Open up the MusicIP application (if you can), let it find and validate
your new music, then close MusicIP down. If running headless, open up
the MusicIP webui (http://youriphere:10002) and reload cache. Then
depending on how you have Squeezecenter set up, do a full clear and
rescan and all your new music should be mixable.

Lots more (better written) info on the spicefly.com pages.

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

2008-06-13 Thread lork

OK, I want to love MusicIP too.. but a 23-page thread (and several other
wiki,/spicefly/etc sets of pages) is pretty intimidating, and in any
case, after going through it all, I am still confused.

Any answers appreciated!

Questions:
- How do I set up MIP headless on my ubuntu machine? I am not a linux
jock, so I would need pretty thorough instructions, including how to
edit whatever it is so that MIP starts before Squeezecenter. Several of
you are clearly running this way... willing to help? If the advice works
easily, I'll clean it up repost (with proper credit) in a clear way
for other novice ubuntu folks. Ubuntu seems to do a lot of things
differently than regular unix; maybe there's just some command to
run?

- As far as I can tell, I will be best scanning my (FLAC) library on my
XP machine, writing the data to the tags, and then moving the whole
library to the Ubuntu machine. That way I get to use the full MIP GUI
for the analysis... does this sound right? Since the library is on an
external HD, will that make the scan take a lot longer?

- Can I get MIP to fix all the tags while doing this? Sure sounds
nice... or do I need to analyze, then fix tags? (nb: tags are decent
already... if so, will having MIP fix them create more trouble than
it's worth?

- Once I've analyzed the library moved it onto the Ubuntu machine
(with MIP running headless), then what? Just scan it into Squeezecenter
go? Or are there additional steps to get everything running together?

I can sort out details of setting moods/whatever after I have these
basics taken care of.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any help- XP I am comfortable with, but
linux/ubuntu (8.04 Hardy) is new to me so any command line stuff needs
to be clearly explained... assume I only know how to open the terminal
 move around in directories.

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Scan for new or changed music

2008-06-13 Thread Siduhe

Big caveat here - I don't use Itunes. However, if you are happy to let
Itunes manage your music, you may be able to speed up performance by
only relying on Itunes integration.

If you enable use Itunes but don't put in an entry for Music Folder
in Squeezecenter, then all Squeezecenter will use to populate its
database is Itunes (so you save on rescanning time where Squeezecenter
would normally try to match up it's own database with Itunes). Also,
Squeezecenter will check for changes to the Itunes database
periodically (depending on how you have set the Rescan Interval) and
automatically update Squeezecenter if Itunes has changed.

Downside is that you can't use Browse Music folder to just rescan a
specific folder. Also, iTunes integration appears to work less well if
Itunes is installed on a different 'box' from Squeezecenter. May be
worth trying.

It's the IP address of the box that MIP is installed on. Try opening up
a web browser on that computer and typing http://localhost:10002 for
starters. Look for a box that says reload cache.

If you aren't running headless however, then a full clear and recan of
Squeezecenter should make the music mixable in your library if it is
also mixable in MIP.

Re: [slim] Scan for new or changed music

2008-06-13 Thread Siduhe

Well, I run a collection of approx 10,000 tracks on an XP box with 1gb
ram and a rescan (including MIP integration) takes 18 mins. However, I
run Squeezecenter on a dedicated, headless box with no other significant
processes. Also, my music is stored on the same physical drive as
Squeezecenter, so no external hard drives (which slow the process down
quite a bit I believe).

Have you tried upping the server priority in Squeezecenter? Do you
have an on-access virus scanner installed? This may also be
responsible for chewing up your CPU as it will monitor every file
access that SC makes on a recan. I would shut down all non-essential
processes (inc virus scanners, internet connection etc) and initiate a
rescan. Does that speed up the process significantly?

problem for getting new mix info. Personaly, I only ever see that

Re: [slim] Poll: Which user category do you belong to ?

2008-06-13 Thread Phil Meyer
So this basically means that SB3 is designed for my 90 year old grandmother ?
Unless she is an audiophile, in which case the Transporter was designed
specifically for her. Big knob, bigger screen, bigger sound ;)

And every new feature in SqueezeCenter must be designed to work good both for
me and her ?
All functions should be designed to be as easy to use as possible, and
unobtrusive for people that don't need/want those functions.

So maybe the user categories I defined was the wrong ones ?

Maybe. I don't think it would make any difference.

Better suggestions that would fit everyone better would be appreciated,
so if anyone has ideas how to divide the users into different
categories, please post.

There are different ways to categorise users. By type (as you have attempted),
or by the hardware they use to play music (PC Server, NAS, Squeezebox,
Transporter, SBC). Perhaps by age group. Perhaps by their listening
environment (lounge or bedroom, loud parties or headphones). If half the user
base were grandmothers, and half were spotty teenager geeks, would it really
influence the way that geeky functions are designed, so that grandmothers can
use them too?

I think Geek is too strong. Perhaps open it up a bit more to be people who
are not afraid to try beta software and plugins; they are gadget lovers. They
constantly strive for new features. Enthusiasts.

Music Lover and Audiophile are similar to me - both care about listening to
music.

Thanks, I am running it under Linux. I'll experiment with a small
subset of my library to see if there is something I can do about it.
One way that would work (albeit a bit contrived) is to access the NAS'
m3lib via a mount from Ubuntu that replicates the exact path to the
file on the NAS. After copying the new albums across to the NAS I
could then use genpuid to analyse the tracks and use MiP headless's
m3lib on on the NAS as the database to append, following which a
refresh should achieve the desired result.

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

2008-06-13 Thread egd

Download MusicIP for Linux from MusicIP.com and save the file to a temp
folder e.g. ~/Desktop/MusicIP
Open a terminal Window and change to the temp folder, extract the
archive and optionally remove it:
Code:

  cd ~/Desktop/MusicIP
  gzip -dc MusicMixer_x86_1.8.tgz | tar xf -
  rm MusicMixer_x86_1.8.tgz

One of the files in the archive is called mmserver. This is the
startup script for MiP headless. It needs to be customised to reflect
your configuration and then added to your Linux boot process.

The default file looks as follows:
Code:

  #! /bin/sh

  # NON-PRIVIELEGED USER TO RUN MUSICMAGICSERVER.
  USER=
  # PATH TO THE MUSICMAGICMIXERSERVER
  export MUSICHOME=
  case $1 in
  start)
su - $USER -c $MUSICHOMEMusicMagicServer start/dev/null
echo Running MusicMagicServer
exit
;;
  stop)
su - $USER -c $MUSICHOMEMusicMagicServer stop/dev/null
echo Stopped MusicMagicServer
exit
;;
  *)
  echo Usage: /etc/rc.d/init.d/mmserver { start | stop }
exit
;;
  esac

USER= should be set to your Ubuntu login name e.g. USER=egd.
export MUSICHOME= should be edited to reflect the location of your
MusicIP installation and by implication your MiP database (if you're
following this step by step it would currently become export
MUSICHOME=/home/yourusername/Desktop/MusicIP/.
You can then copy mmserver to /etc/init.d/ as follows:
Code:

sudo cp mmserver /etc/init.d/

Now you need to tell Ubuntu to start MiP BEFORE Squeezecenter. Install
Boot-up-manager (BUM) and then run it (it will also appear as an entry
in your Ubuntu System/Administration menu):
Code:

sudo apt-get install bum
  sudo bum

Click on BUM's Advanced option and navigate to its Services tab. Find
SqueezeCenter, right click on it and select Change Start/Stop
priority. Note the numeric priority assigned to it. Hit Cancel.
Find mmserver, right click on it and select Change Start/Stop
priority. Set the numeric priority assigned to it to a higher number
than that assigned to SqueezeCenter. Hit OK.

Restart your Ubuntu machine (if you know what you're doing you can stop
SC, start MiP and then restart SC, thus avoiding the need for a reboot,
however, a reboot is probably warranted to ensure it all works when you
start up your machine).

Since I could get the filter to work in the GUI, I would think that
this is not a feature that requires a registration key.

Looking at the API, it looks like you can only query what filters exist
 - you can't actually create one.

Does anybody know how to make this work with Linux?

 Thanks,
 Rich

Looking at the init script egd posted gave me my clue. When I run the
GUI of MIP, I'm logged in as root. So, my changes all go into
/root/.MusicIP. I hacked up the squeezecenter script to start MIP
headless and didnt' specify the user ID. So, when it starts, it is
reading from /.MusicIP. When I log in as root, kill the MIP headless
server and start it logged in as root, then SC sees my filter!!!

So, on Linux, in order for changes you make in the GUI to be seen by
the headless server, you must run both under the same user name.

When I have time, I may give a whack at updating the Wiki with this
additional information.

What you get when you take a poll in an internet forum, are the opinions

these forums, most of the active participants seem to me to be
technical types or at least people who are technically capable.
Oftentimes helping people like me who have problems or questions.

I currently have a bit more time on my hands than I've had previously,
and so I have enjoyed reading here for the past few weeks. I am
decidedly non-technical, and for people like me, if things are working
OK, there is little interest in tinkering with something that doesn't
need tinkering. I have no ability to make the products do anything
other than what someone else makes them do, and I have no interest in
trying. But for those who do, thank you.

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

2008-06-13 Thread maggior

To create a filter, you need to use the MusicMagicMixer, which is a Java
GUI. Right click on the left window pane and you will see an option to
create a filter.

When you do this, You MUST ensure that you run the GUI as the same user
as your headless MusicMagicServer. Otherwise, changes made in the GUI
will not be reflected by the headless server.

Once the filter has been created, you must exit the GUI, and restart
SqueezeCenter and MusicMagicServer. It may be enough to just restart
MusicMagicServer. I restart both since I have both start from the same
init script.

At this point, your filters will be available on the MusicIP
configuration page of SqueezeCenter.

It's a PITA, but fortunately configuring filters is probably not
something you will do very often.
