Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.1 now on the AppStore

2009-04-14 Thread vagskal

I was just wondering how the search function in iPeng works.

I get strange results. If I search for Trenet as in Charles Trenet in
iPeng, I get several results but not one of the 4 VA albums where
Charles Trenet appears as a track artists and none of the two other
albums where Trenet is a co-composer. The results I get are only
artists starting with A or B, albums starting with a number or A and
genres starting with A, N or T.

A search in the SC web UI returns the 4 VA albums and one of the other
two albums.

A search in Muso, with the SC database imported into Muso, returns all
albums correctly.

There's a known issue with the incremental search in iPeng 1.1 (no
ticket yet), that if results for earlier searches (e.g for the first
two characters) show up after additional characters are entered these
additional characters are being ignored (technically: the second search
gets canceled).
The workaround is after entering the whole search string to wait until
the last intermediate list shows up before pressing search.

This issue is especially apparent when SqueezeCenter is set to search
within words and not only at the word start because the server response
will be slower in this situation.

I suspect this has to do with some optimizations in 1.1 to get server
load down while searching or it's a result of the comet communication.

Will have to see how to fix this.

Thanks! The workaround worked. I guess I was just to eager to get the
search results. (A bit funny UI wise, though, with a Search button that
does not invoke a search operation based on the entered text string...)

BTW SC was already set to search only in the beginning of words.

 be copyrightfree ?
The main thing to bear in mind with that playlist API is that they all
return XML documents that hold the playlist, but don't stream the
tracks themselves. Obviously in the case of User Playlists there is
-something special-, that allows SN to convert that playlist into a
stream, but that hasn't been applied to Album or Tag Playlists.

Plugins needs APIs. The Spotify API (supposed solution for

[slim] PC World in Leeds, Uk - Better marketing !

Am pleased to see that there is slightly better marketing of SB kit in
PC world in Leeds, a previous thread commented that the boxes (Booms)
were stuck away on a shelf in the Leeds store.

I went in yesterday and there is now a SB classic hooked up to speakers
running a demo plus new signs etc., thats a bit better then the last
time I was in and I hope they are getting more business as a result !

An alternative would be to enable SB to play DRM tracks downloaded from

we'd get better quality 192 vs 128Kbits.

Any chance of this?

Hmm, the log show that SC's idea of the players' time epoch is way out
compared with that of the server (probably about 23s at the time you
took the log snapshot). Every few seconds SC adjust its idea of the
players' epochs by 5ms, so it is going to take around 6 hours to get
back in sync.

Given that you server does not sleep, is there anything else which
could cause its time to jump, and possibly jump back again?

Re: [slim] Next product I want from SD er Logitech: SqueezeVideo

2009-04-14 Thread ymilner

Look at SageTV line of products. The philosophy is very similar to that
of Slim (server to stream, client to do the playing). They have
hardware client and software client. Transcoding of video takes place
when the format is not supported by the client (older MVP boxes) or the
client is connected over internet.
The server software is expandable; there are many plug-ins (STVs).
And, besides media server functionality, it is actually PVR too (it was
PVR from the beginning).
I would love to see the two (Logitech/SageTV) to create a common
product!

Here in the UK I've been in Richer Sounds, overhearing them selling
Sonos setups - and I mean -selling- - knowing all the answers to
customers' questions, even offering to install.
Of course the higher price of Sonos merits the additional effort (I'm
assuming the mark-up is higher) but it's a shame to think of all those
customers who'd haven been quite happy with an SB setup forking out for
Sonos.

One minor security note, if you are doing this without any tunneling
then pretty much ANYONE on the net can access your BOOM too.

Even using Squeezecenter's builtin password system is not safe for over
the net since it does not use ssl the info is in the clear. While they
do make some efforts to secure Squeezecenter you must remember this is
an application that is built with the thought that it is used only on a
local LAN behind a firewall.

Now that said, I know many users access their server remotely using an
ssh tunnel which is a perfect way to access it. This is not possible
on a non-jailbroken iphone though because the iphone does not support
background apps.

Forgot the important point.
Sure you may not want someone controlling your players but the big
concern is that if there exists a vulenabilty in either the SC code or
Perl that SC relys on then someone could gain access to the server
running SC which is a bigger concern. From that point they could do
many not so great things.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.1 now on the AppStore

2009-04-14 Thread maggior

I've read through this thread and looked at the iPeng website and didn't
see any reference to iPeng acting as a player.

Can it? Can the iPod Touch play files directly from the server through
other means?

Things seem to be really moving quite slowly with SqueezePlay working
properly on the SBC and I'd entertain buying an iPod touch if it
allowed playback of music directly off a server. It would be cool to
have it as a second controller too!

Thanks.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.1 now on the AppStore

2009-04-14 Thread garym

Hmm, maybe I'm confused here. It seems your response assumes I'm
connecting to my own local server. The ipeng can't access my SC (on my
local server). This distance connection only works if my BOOM is
connected to SqueezeNetwork (not SC) and SN is what I've selected as
the server on iPeng. And I did nothing to turn this on or off, this
just seems to be the way iPeng works when players are on SN. Of
course, if the player is on SC (on my server) then I can only connect
with the ipeng, if the iphone is on my local wireless network.

m1abrams;415413 Wrote:

You know I never use SqueezeNetwork so that thought never passed my

SqueezeCenter. Using SN the way you are is perfectly fine security
wise.

I can control my local SC remotely via ssh tunneling, can even use my
iPod Touch using iPeng by having a computer do the tunnel and allow
other devices on the network use the tunnel and then have my iPeng use
the tunneling computer as the SC server.

[slim] Netbook to control SB3

2009-04-14 Thread audio53

Is anybody using a netbook to control their SB3? I am currently using a
SB Controller to control my SB3, but I think having the larger screen
of a netbook at my listening chair running SC would be nice.

My SB3 is currently hardwired via CAT5 to a desktop PC running SC. This
PC has a second drive that contains my music library. Could I take a
netbook that is wirelessly connected to my network, run SC on it and
access the drive on the desktop PC? How would I point SC on the netbook
to a drive on the desktop PC? Is this the right approach?

Thanks.

You don't need to install SC on the netbook, and probably don't want
to.

Just start your web browser and go to http://192.168.1.2:9000/ ...
where 192.168.1.2 is replaced by the IP number of your server.

Depending on your networking, you may even be able to get away with
putting the 'server name' there.

I have found the 'default' skin is a bit constrained strained on the
small display, and usually use fishbone (add 'fishbone' to the end of
the url above) which deals a bit better with small screens. 'classic'
may work for you, too.

What snarlydwarf said. You don't need to run SC on a netbook, just
point your netbook's browser at your desktop PC's SC web interface as
he described. From your description, that's all that you really need.

FWIW, I often run SC 7.4 on a dell mini 9 netbook without issue.

This is a bug about further enhancement of the digital output off

As you see in comment #2 there is an explanation why this is working

If my dim memory serves me right I have memories that this is one of
these was working before bugs ? ie originally working functionality

Give your desktop PC (the one running SC) a fixed IP address on your
network. Then as described above, enter that address just once in a
browser on the netbook you use to control SC remotely. Bookmark the
address, and then you can go back to it repeatedly without remembering
what to type in. Reboot the server, or the network, or lose power, and
the IP address for the SC server will remain unchanged and the
bookmarked address will continue to work.

Tell me, what new HARDWARE features are you clamoring for that would
make you want to replace your current SB3/Duet/Boom with another
Squeezebox audio-only player? I'm pretty darn happy with my FIVE
Squeezeboxes and unwilling to spend $2000 on a Transporter. So, even
though I'm an extremely loyal Squeeze fan, there's nothing for me to
 buy.

Ignoring video will eventually kill the Squeezebox. The current family
of Networked Media Tanks costs LESS than the Squeezebox and includes
playback of many audio, video, and graphics formats including hi-def
 video with multichannel audio.

The NMTs also offer some things Squeezebox fans have wanted for a LONG
time, like local storage - you can stick a 1TB hard drive in one of
these and take your whole library with you. NMTs do not require server
software, they can discover and index media files anywhere on the LAN.
Finally, they provide big-screen display of tag information and album
 art.

We're entering a new era of networked media playback. The next gen of
Blu-ray players and flat-screen TVs will include playback of audio and
video from anywhere on the LAN or the internet. Many of the current
Squeezebox features will be built in to commodity components.

I myself have postponed a NMT purchase because I'm hoping Squeeze will

the big screen the many hi-def videos I have captured or created.

I sure wish it was a SqueezeVideo I was ordering today. Instead it's
going to be the $219 HDX 1000. Sorry, Logitech.

This sounds very interesting. I'll need a full review if you get one.
:) I don't really think that it would replace my SB3 as I like the
simple and quick elegance of it. I think they would go side by side
and I do have one hdmi port left on my receiver ( 2 if I get rid of my
dvd player). Thanks for pointing this out, I had never heard of it.

Re: [slim] Anyone using SB, etc. with a whole-house audio system?

2009-04-14 Thread GotX

I'm an excited new owner of a Russound system. Not yet installed. I
want to connect it to my SB3. Not knowing how all of this works yet.
The keypads, can they be programed to send IR to my SB3? Play,
forward, Back etc? How do you choose playlist and genre from the
keypads? Maybe not possible. I wish there was an RNET integration
piece here.

Anyway, I'm planning on: SB3, FM, DVD/CD, SAT, iBridge and possible XM
as inputs. Thinking of upgrading to the Transport as it has an RS232
integration port.

To start I will have 6 zones. I can see a phase 2 of adding more zones
and inputs.

Ultimately it would be great to control playlists, Genre as well as
basic controls from the keypads.

The iBridge allows this type of control of an iPod. If I can somehow
mimick its operation with SB3 or Transport from the keypad, that would
be awesome. The hardest part will be sending back song data to the
keypad and SB3 menu navigation.

Re: [slim] Next product I want from SD er Logitech: SqueezeVideo

2009-04-14 Thread hoosier

I have noted this before in other posts, I am a strong believer in the
TViX player. Just like I think the SB is the greatest thing in audio,
the TViX is great for video. You can do full Blu-Ray quality 1080P
playback on the 6500 (sigma 8635) and you can do fairly decent h264
playback on the 4100 (sigma 8623 - but has been discontinued). It will
play an ISO file just like you put a DVD in a player (they call it DVD
Jukebox). The 6500 currently can't handle BluRay menu structure - it
can only play the files if you rip them.

The OP makes some good points. All of the media players available have
horrible GUIs (except XBMC - but it can't do 1080P). It would be
fantastic to have a hook into the interface. It shouldn't be a big
deal as I think the players could easily be open source. The TViX is
based on a Linux kernel, and the code is available at the company site
- so it is actually open source. I just don't think there are too many
developers working on it though.

I really think a critical mass is building for streaming video players
as I am accumulating a lot of AVCHD files from my HiDef camcorder, and
not every video player can handle AVCHD (my TVIX 4100 has no problems).
People are going to want to stream their home movies, and in my opinion
that is the driver that will push this technology to the mainstream like
the SB.

I can't help but wonder what nvida's ION will do in this area.

[slim] why is the sb3 remote SO unreliable?

2009-04-14 Thread izzym

I've had a squeezebox 3 since Christmas. I use it almost all the time as
an internet radio player through the squeezenetwork (ie, the computer is
usually turned off, or not running squeezecenter).
My wireless router is connected via a FIOS fiber optic connection up to
the side of the house...I can stream full screen video with NO problems,
so I know my connection is not the problem.
Aside from the annoying buffering, this thing fails to respond to the
remote FAR too often...20% to 30% of the time. Either it's WAY too slow
to accept a command (several seconds go by ... what's it doing??) or it
doesn't accept it at all. I have to physically unplug the SB to reset
the damn thing. It loses the connection far too often, and won't respond
to on/off commands, or the hold-down left button.
Coming from a remote control mfr., I fund this intolerable. It's just
way too flaky a unit for dependable operation. Is there any way to
remedy this?

[slim] How to enable folder browsing in music library?

2009-04-14 Thread lovemov

I was using older version, one of the feature I like and use a lot is
that I can browsing by folders.
I recently upgraded to squeezecenter, and the feature is gone?
Thanks.

It sounds like the remote might be faulty. Why not call Logitech
support.
