You only need one of the files in that link. Which file depends on what
operating system are you using. If it's Windows, you want the one that
says Windows Executable in the description. If you're running MacOS

Re: [slim] UK ISP Plus.net, Squeeze 7.4 and BBC Radio - anyone?

2009-10-09 Thread ModelCitizen

Well, a big thanks to you both for this.

goharbourview123. The Kasperskyy AntiVirus I had installed (latest
edition?) appears different from yours. Trusted Zone is in a different
place and the Do not scan all network traffic at any remote host and at
any remote port setting does not seem to exist. However, I made what
seemed to be the equivalent settings but still no joy. Previously I had
stopped Kaspersky AntiVirus and BBC Radio ASX playlist WMA streams still
did not work, so I decided to uninstall it completely.

I left it out for two days and the BBC streams worked perfectly in all
that time.

I've now dumped Kaspersky AntiVirus and installed the free Avast which,
although it speaks to me loudly and has horrible tray icons, leaves the
BBC streams working in peace.

So I am a happy (if slightly embarrassed) bunny.

Again. Thanks for all your help with this (esp the ever-patient bpa).

I don't think anyone who uses the Squeezebox stuff should bother with
the Kaspersky AntiVirus product. Flaky, inconsistent, unreliable and far
too much trouble.

I'm glad that you got your problem sorted after all the effort you put
in - many users just give up.

Your experience confirms my belief that uninstalling is the only way to
definitively test whether security software is causing a problem -

I agree with many of your points about Radio vs Boom.
But I think your $50 price differential is not a fair argument for
comparison. The Radio is $100 less than Boom for comparable operation
(requiring an outlet). If SD had offered a $50 battery for the Boom

How well does your five year old read?

I would suggest an inexpensive CD boombox for less than 1/2 the cost of
the Squeezebox Radio. Burn a stack of CDs and place colorful labels on
the CDs that the kids will recognize. You'll also have FM radio
available, for which the kids only have to move a dial tuner to find new
music.

Sometimes the championing of these products goes so far beyond common

Re: [slim] Sync

2009-10-09 Thread aubuti

Sync should work just fine with a Boom and a Classic/SB3, but there is
no way anyone can offer much help without providing some more
information, such as:
- server operating system and hardware
- SC/SbS version
- wired or wifi or both
- what are you trying to stream (eg, local MP3s, local FLAC, radio
streams, music services like Pandora, etc.)
- are you doing any transcoding
- a description of *how* they are out of sync. Do they start in sync
and then drift apart or are they never in sync? How are out of sync are
they, fractions of seconds or several seconds? Do they re-sync when a
new track starts?

I've probably left out some important elements, but at least that info
will help get things going.

like, does washing dishes mean you can't use a boom? can one not tell
the difference between a boom or a sbradio if they don't have perfect
 stereo imaging body placement?

Perhaps I can add a real world example. I have a whole mix of Slim
Devices hardware round the house - SB1/SB2/Classic/Controller/Boom in
normal use. During the beta testing, I set up the Radio in my kitchen
(taking one of the Classic's out of rotation). I also have a weekly
cleaner, who has never even touched or showed the slightest interest in
any of the previous hardware. Within two weeks she had got to grips
with the Radio (no prompting from me), selecting local music and radio
and (big grrr here) even programming some new presets. She didn't
actually realise it was internet radio at first but instinctively got to
grips with it.

The kicker is that, even after I've shown her how the Classic and Boom
work (i.e. the same way) she won't use them - just doesn't get it. She
carries the radio round the house with her, plugging it in as she goes.
The Radio works for her, period. It may not make a huge amount of

OK I'll bite.

I've bucked in and out of this thread a couple of times. But it's only
after jumping back through a couple of quotes that I've seen this post.
Have you listened to the Radio yet?

The Radio has been my most used player for a couple of months now.
Listening mainly to BBC 6Music in my study, and some albums as well. I
don't sit down to listen to music, but it's always on when I'm working
or just pottering about. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I can
tell the difference in sound from the Radio and the SB3 hooked to my AV
amp, the Touch hooked to Logitech stereo speakers on my desk and my Boom
in the kitchen. Yes the sound is smaller than the other setups, but
saying someone needs their head examined if they use it to listen to
music is quite frankly ridiculous.

The Radio -is not- an audiophiles product, it -is not- a Boom
replacement, it -is not- the pinnacle of the Squeezebox line up.
However, it -is- a very capable little player with a surprising amount
of volume and quality as far as the sound is concerned.

This is a mass consumer device. So if you compare it most other music
systems in that market, I would guess it knocks their socks off. It
certainly sounds better than any of the regular iPod docks and DAB
radios I've listened to, and millions of poeple find them acceptable as
music sources.

Re: [slim] Sync

2009-10-09 Thread DigitalMitch

I run 2*SB3, 2*SBR, 1*Boom and 1* Radio all sync'd and controlled via
and SBC and/or iPeng.

They are generally all sync'd together and stay perfectly locked.

Very occasionally I have had 1 or 2 drift by 1/2 - 5 seconds. This has
normally occurred after a rebuffering problem and is fixed by power
cycling the offedning unit(s). This hasn't happened since I moved most
to wired (via HomePlug) and subsequently to 7.4.

I power them up and down and add them in and out of sync groups
flawlessly.

SBS is 7.4 on WHS (HP MediaSmart)

Re: [slim] Facebook App Questions

2009-10-09 Thread DigitalMitch

Thanks - Update

1. there is a toggle under Settings/Screen/Image Viewer Settings called
'Addiitonal Info about Picture'

When set as 'Show' this includes text (from eitehr FaceBook or
Flickr).
The text does't scroll and is very small but it is there.

2 3

On MySB
deleted credentials
uninstalled Facebook App

Screen saver options remain on SBC Radio
Power cycled each (indepedently) and Screen Saver Options disappear.

This fixes item 3 from my OP.

Resinstalled FB on MySB and reregistered to FB.
the MYSB settings for the rogue SB3 still show the same account
number!!
The account on that SB3 shows correctly.

Item 2 still open (doesn't seem to cause any issues - just looks
wrong).

Re: [slim] Facebook App Questions

2009-10-09 Thread DigitalMitch

matt,

tried again. This time using IR to remove account on 'rogue' SB3.
On SB3 MyApps/Facebook gives only 1 option I have a facebook
account.
On MySB the account settings show Already a Facebook Subscriber and
the Connect with Facebook button. The player settings tab shows -
for all the accounts, except the rogue SB3 which still shows
1612336715.

You can't remove FB app from SB3 (or I couldn't find how) so put rogue
SB3 to stand-by, went to MySB and uninstalled, stopped SBS.
Brought SB3 out of standby (incidentally, it failed to find SBS,
obviously but I had to back part way through setup to choose MySB).

Installed FB via SB3, checked on MySB and rogue account still shows
1612336715. Couldn't face entering email via the IT so entered FB
credentials via MySB and back to square 1.

Do you, or anyone else, have any more ideas?

I guess that the Apps liaise direct with MySB whether or not SBS is
running therefore there isn't muc point in exploring that avenue.

Mitch

[slim] Spare remotes in the UK

Any idea where I can buy a couple of spare remotes in the UK?

Over the years I've replaced a number of Squeezeboxes and now have two

Re: [slim] Spare remotes in the UK

there was a spares section on www.logitech.com which seems to have
disappeared/diminished when it was revamped (circa release of Radio)

I had an open cart which had a controller charging cradle, to which I
added a Radio and have now received both. The new web-site didn't seem
to let me complete the order using IE7, so I tried IE8 on a different
machine, couldn't find cradle so upgraded original pc. to IE8 and
completed order (painfully).

I guess if/when they fix web-site you'll hopefully be able to order
spares again.

Alternately harass support and see if they can order for you, bypassing
website.

Alternately the web-settings suggest a JVC remote of unspecified style
may work.

Interesting. I'd guess these are personal payments rather than company

It's too bad to learn how prevalent it seems to be among the people you
know.

In my experience, it's quite rare in Silicon Valley, but I'm talking
about tech companies and products rather than retail ones. It's not that
all companies are saintly in everything they do, but the vast majority
do try hard to stay within legal boundaries. Most companies I know try
to be vigilant about shenanigans among field sales staff and things do
pop up from time to time. Especially abroad.

Re: [slim] Best Squeezebox for kids play room

2009-10-09 Thread maggior

JJZolx;469591 Wrote:
How well does your five year old read?

I would suggest an inexpensive CD boombox for less than 1/2 the cost of
the Squeezebox Radio. Burn a stack of CDs and place colorful labels on
the CDs that the kids will recognize. You'll also have FM radio
available, for which the kids only have to move a dial tuner to find new
 music.

Sometimes the championing of these products goes so far beyond common
 sense that it amazes me.

My 5 year old is actually reading quite well already.

We tried the whole CD player thing for the reasons you suggest. She
just wasn't interested in it. Once the novelty wore off, she just
wasn't interested - she wanted her music played via a SB.

All kids are different, so perhaps others would take to that. I guess
since she sees Daddy using a squeezebox all of the time, she wants to
too.

Kids don't know to be intimidated by technology. I'm amazed at how my
daughter can navigate websites on my wife's laptop. She even knows how
to print stuff and navigate the dialogs.

Another disadvantage of the CD player idea is the mess of CDs all over
the place. A kid's playroom is bound to be trashed to begin with - why
add to the stuff that get's trashed. I'm glad that in my daughter's
room, we don't have CDs to clean up in addition to her books and toys.

To bring JJ's suggestion into the realm of SB, Moose is a good option.
This is because it has an album chooser interface that you can use
that allows musical selections to be made based on the cover. You can
enlarge the covers to as large as you want. You would however need a
computer to run Moose on.

Or, maybe choose the Radio with a battery (when available), to keep

Re: [slim] Cyrus Two no worky - fix or upgrade?

2009-10-09 Thread thurstongarden

Good news! I had a call today from the repair place to say they had
fixed both amps. There was a bust capacitor in the PSX which blew both
the amps. You live and learn.

However, the repair chappie asvised strongly not to hook up the PSX. He
could not see the benefit of itthe power supplies are the same in
each Now, I am a noob to the advantages of the PSX, but the sound
was noticably better with it hooked up (before it blew both amps of
course!). He said the boards that he replaced in both amps were the last
he could source, to a repeat problem would be the end of an amp in his
view.

But on the basis that the PSX is now repaired, surely it won't blow an
amp again? He put the bust capacitor down to age - dry as he called it.
He said there were 15 in the PSX and if another blew then the PSX would
blow the board in the amp again.

So, the dillema is, do I hook the PSX up? I have two working amps now,
so I guess one could be a spare... I guess I will need to remove the two
fuses in the amp before I hook up the PSX (assuming hook it up!) -
repair bloke said he had put them back in.

Thoughts would be appreciated! My electrical knowledge extends to
changing light bulbs

Ta.

[slim] Radio Track Information

2009-10-09 Thread mpc

Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes...
I listen to the radio thru my SB3 (K92FM, KLove) and up until recently
it used to display the info of the track being played on the screen in a
scrolling motion. Typically it would display the artist and track name.
What is happening now is when I 1st turn the radio on it displays the
correct information of the tune playing but this doesn't change for the
tunes played after, it just displays the info from the track that was
playing when I turned the radio on. If I turn the SB3 off then back on
again, the track data will change to what is currently playing but then
won't change as the music does??
Why doesn't it change the artist/track data with each song played like
it used to? Is there a setting to correct this?
I am still on v7.3.3, I am very reluctant to change to v7.4 due to all
the problems people are having

Re: [slim] Why so many rude comments?

2009-10-09 Thread MrSinatra

then get a SBC, (unless redness is that important to you). :)

i understand that arguments such as less space actually mean
something to some of you, but they don't to me, given its drawbacks.
less space isn't anywhere near as important for such an otherwise
expensive product, yet its mono only.

i'm just amazed that with so many audiophile people here, or at least
people who want high quality music reproduction at acceptable prices
(which is why i got my SB2 all those years ago, it certainly wasn't the
software!) ...that these same quality sound oriented people happily
settle for a mono client.

i'm sure the interface is nice and think the boom should get it, i'm
sure the space savings and battery is nice, etc... but inspite of all
those things you all love about it, for the price i simply can't get
past its crippled as a music client. the buck stops right there fo me
before aything else is broached. now look, thats simply MY OPINION, you
need not agree with it, and i don't need to dress my opinion up for you
in ways that you find easy to digest.

this whole thread sub-topic reminds me of the groom asking the best
man, you think she's pretty right? ...and the best man basically had
better say YES! or else, ...when the truth is more why do you care
what i think? she is if you think she is! (which usually means, HELL
NO ; )

Re: [slim] Squeezeplay and Squeezebox at the same time!?

2009-10-09 Thread gcurrie

No, sorry. I think Squeezeplay is a few lines of code short of working.
I suspect there are a bunch of features that wil become enabled quickly
as soon as someone has the spare cycles. I just don't see this happening
before all the planned bug fixing of SBS 7.4, MySB, the launch of the
Touch.

I experience the same as others - I can sync Squeezeplay to my SBR, but
it switches off audio from Squeezeplay. Even after I unsync, audio is
disabled until I restart Squeezeplay.

I guess we have to be patient. Squeezeplay is currently the stepchild
in the lineup and not key to any of Logitech's product plans.

Even worse, I have no display on 2 Booms and 2 SB3's. I've tried the
'clean cache' method described above and it's not made a difference. Is
there *anything* else that can be tried short of trashing my settings?

Thanks,

[slim] 7.4 Upgrade: Extension Downloader won't show

2009-10-09 Thread twynne

Upgraded from 7.3.x to 7.4 this evening and so far it's been painful.
I'm now essentially putting each setting back manually. When I go to
Plugins Extension Downloader and click on Settings, the 'old'
Extension Downloader screen appears briefly then disappears. Does
anyone have a fix for this, or another way to reach my extensions so I
can put things back please?

Thanks,

Tom

So treat the Plugins page as a new version of Extension Downloader.

 Thanks for the reply.
A software PC based client will never be able to perfectly sync with a
hardware player, if thats what you want.

There are simply too many variables out of the control of the
developers in a PC to guarantee a perfect sync. Simultaneous play should
work just fine... eventually.

Another alternative is SolfSqueeze. It's a Java emulator of the IP3K
line of players (SB2/3, Transporter and Boom) you can find it on
Sourceforge.

shows the Extension Downloader as a plugin, and it's selected, and has
'settings' available to the right. My natural reaction was I have to

Zune Marketplace and Zune Pass are different and use different systems.
While Sonos/Sansa may be able to play WMA DRM, it certainly can't play

over the splashing and filter pump noise. I can't imagine how heavy the
boom would be with a battery. Without one it is already heavier than a
Radio with battery.

Until I tried it, I did not think Radio would be loud enough or the
screen visible enough, but it's better. And I haven't dropped it, which
I can't say about the Boom!

artists/genres query code so I'm surprised that it behaves different.
Genres have always been slow. It's not - it was the same problem with the
 previous version.

What I do: Genres - All Albums...and the result in 1.2 is literally
*ALL Albums*. Not good, because what I ultimately wish to do is to
shuffle all songs to listen to random stuff from a specific genre.

The good news is the contextual menu, which seems to work. Holding
down on a chosen Genre brings up a Play option. So this works for now.

Err... no? Problem is I can't test this right now since I don't have
MusicIP on my 7.3 server. It should be in the Album Context menu that
you get when holding an album. And in the TrackInfo menu you get when
holding a track within an album or on the current playlist or the
 NowPlaying cover art.
Is it not there? What do you see?MusicIP shows up nicely in the contextual
 menus everywhere. Only issue
seems to be that mixing is very slow (albeit, no load for MusicIP on the
server while mixing !?). But it works if you have a bit of patience. And
that is nice :-)

I'll btw. give 7.4.1 a shot...

[slim] Feature request - 802.11n wireless

2009-10-09 Thread kphinney

My hopes of the new SB Touch having 802.11n at 54ghz didn't pan out.
For one, I'm going to hold off on buying any wireless product that
doesn't support 802.11n using 5ghz. At present my entire network is
capped by having two SB3s running at 802.11g 2.4ghz. This brings my
top-end down from 540 to 144mbps.

As suggested in another post, I could run CAT to each device, but that
would come dangerously close to the 100m max of CAT5. The cable would
have to run from a second story, down to the ground floor, out to the
pool house, and then spit and go all the way to the our work shed. Not
to mention having a blue wire laying in the open, hanging from tree
branches, or buried in the garden (the most direct route).

A second alternative would be to use a separate router for 802.11b/g
devices. This would only work if I didn't want to keep the server on
the fast connection, where it also serves music and movies to our
laptops and media center, and hosts our file server and website. If
someone has an idea as to how to set this up on a PPC Mac G5 I'm open to
hear any suggestions.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] SB3 display not working with 7.4

2009-10-09 Thread twynne

If this is of any use to anyone else or the SB devs, I managed to sort
this out by individually resetting the prefs of each player (and then
manually restoring the settings of each!) All of my players use
SaverSwitcher and SuperDateTime - not sure if either of these could have
had anything to do with it??

Re: [slim] Feature request - 802.11n wireless

2009-10-09 Thread jdoering

I have no disagreement with your 802.11n request - it's a nice to have
in my book. Although I like wires so I'd probably figure out a way to
run it in my case (some strategically placed switches might alleviate
100m cabling limits).

Anyway, I'm curious about your problem running a separate router. You
mention wanting to keep your server on the fast connection. Is your
server wireless too? I'd go with server wired to gigabit switch; switch
connected to a legacy 802.11g access point as well as a separate 802.11n
access point. One of the two access points would probably be running as
my actual Internet router. The independent switch could be eliminated
and the legacy access point connected directly to the switch on the main
wireless router. There are lots of minor variations; I'm not sure why
you'd have a limitation on this front in the first place unless your
server is wireless?

i'd like to see n too, but unfortunately i'll have to support g for
years b/c i have a SBC and it'll be a long time b4 i replace it.

however, you may find that the 100m limit isn't a hard and fast rule.
i think you should try say, 150m worth of cat5e cable, and see if in
fact its going to be too long or not. (justrun it on the floor temp for
testing) i have used much longer lengths successfully in pro
networking environments.

Re: [slim] Feature request - 802.11n wireless

2009-10-09 Thread jdoering

As you probably know, cable length restrictions are about timing
tolerances and Ethernet protocol efficiency / error detection. I do
believe that there is quite a bit of robustness built into Ethernet and
that the tolerances likely have a good degree of safety factor; but I
don't think you can use simple testing to make a very strong conclusions
that it works correctly. Yes it probably kinda, mostly works; but it
may degrade performance or cause intermittent problems that are harder
to detect (e.g. high packet corruption rates, lower transmission rates,
etc due to problems with collision detection and such). These issues
might not matter much if performance isn't an issue - but I wouldn't
want to have to worry about the what-if when things don't go quite
right.

I'd personally stick with the specs and use switches, etc appropriately
to solve distance issues.

I'm not sure I understand the issue. Why not get a dual-band 802.11n
router, like the DIR-855?

Or plug a 2.4 GHz 802.11n access point (or router acting as an access
point; just turn of DHCP and ignore the WAN port) into one of the ports
on your 5 GHz 802.11n router, in effect achieving the same thing.

Am I missing something?

so measure it with testing software, leave it for a few days testing,
whatever; however in my exp, if it works its fine. its something the OP

[slim] Poll: Do you have a Dual-Band Airport?

2009-10-09 Thread Matt Wise

I'm trying to track down some info to help diagnose a syncing/streaming
bug (bug 14570). I think I have just found that the Dual-Band Apple
Airport in my house was the culprit -- turn its wireless off entirely
completely solved my issues. On the flip-side, using ONLY the dual-band
airport completely broke all of my wireless squeezeboxes!

Does anyone else out there have the Dual Band airport ... can you share
your experiences with it and Squeezeboxes? (wireless)

I'm not trying to be argumentative on this and it might work okay in
practice. But I don't think measuring it with testing software and
leaving for a few days is a very straight-forward proposition. You may
have the expertise and tools to verify this kind of solution but I think
it's beyond most home network users. What software will you use and how
will you know it's working okay and that you've simulated the situations
likely to cause issues?

You're running equipment outside of its specs. Maximum cable length and
such are not arbitrary numbers. They are calculated based on physical
characteristics of the hardware as well as timing requirements of the
protocol algorithms. Many different network pieces (likely from
different vendors) are all designed with these basic constraints in
mind. So once you've gone beyond whatever safety margins are built into
the specs you don't really know anymore when things can be expected to
work correctly or not. Certain protocol traffic patterns might cause
problematic timings while other use cases may run perfectly fine.

Anyway, it certainly something that can be tried and may work but
there's a certain comfort in running things in a configuration that
hardware manufactures are compelled to support.

Re: [slim] Artwork for FLAC (not iTunes) music?

2009-10-09 Thread chinablues

Both MP3tag and TagRename will find artwork (and other info) directly
by looking up Amazon.com. MP3Tag is free, but I prefer TagRename.
(does other things apart from artwork). If you cannot find the artwork
on Amazon.com, I find http://www.cdcovers.cc/ to be quite useful.
Amazon.com typically has the folder.jpg in 300x300 or 500x500 pixels
size which is ideal. Cdcovers you download the album art separately and
then resize/rename to folder.jpg.
