[slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?
Hi all; I'm running squeezebox server 7.3.3 on a Buffalo Linkstation NAS (HS-DHGL8C3). Until recently, I've been using a squeezebox boom and also a Roku M1001 accessing the NAS wirelessly via Squeezebox server, Apart from odd drop outs, it's all held together well. I've just bought a SB Touch which I can run either wired or wirelessly. Despite the Boom and Roku happily planing, I had some initial issues with the Touch as it was saying I had to update the Server software however it then sprung into life (unf. I can't remember what I did). 2 days later, it's again saying the Server S/W needs an update (Boom continues to play however). Given that the Server is running from the NAS, I'd prefer to leave that alone and get the Touch working wherever possible My main questions are: 1. With regard to reliability etc am I better using the Touch as a server for the Boom/Roku (i.e. buy a USB HDD) or stick with the NAS approach running the server? 2. Any ideas what needs doing to get the Touch working - for 36 hours it was fine and I've not aware I've changed any settings and assume I'm likely to be 'operator error'. 3. The speakers in my main hifi set up seem to have a static build up when the Roku or Touch are connected. The Roku used a phono out to RCA, the touch uses 2 x RCAs but the problem (whilst not quite as bad now) persists. Does anyone else have/had this problem? I love the funtionality of the Squeezebox approach however I'm currently music-less in my lounge and would appreaciate any assistance Cheers all! -- onemeg onemeg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=45195 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88974 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It all depends on library size, hard drive model and possibly also other factors. onemeg;642759 Wrote: > > 2. If you connect it to different server versions, it's going to ask you to upgrade firmware every time you switch server. This can be especially frustrating for people who often switch between a local server and mysqueezebox.com if their local server doesn't match the version currently used at mysqueezebox.com. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland). Re: [slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?
best bet would be to get 7.5.6 beta going ( has some anoying scanner bugs fixed ). 7.6 may be to much " beta" but it has better performance on low spec hardware. if 7.6 works all is well but it has the potential to not work at all ( it is an experimental beta ) all plugins is not yet supported, for example custombrowse. if you decide to upgrade you may want a completely clean install with such large version jump ( remove every trace of the old install ) and yes 7.5.0 is the minimum version that supports Touch . the Touch onboard server can work provided a very tidy library with no messy tags cover art as jpg ( no bmp or png ) and the rigth USB drive and a reasonable amount of files around 10k files are suggested use FLAC or MP3 alac or aac or wma migth be more buggy. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Re: [slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?
thanks v.m. for the initial messages. I'm confused then how the Touch somehow, for a while, happily worked with the 7.3.3 but I take your point. This therefore leads to a further question! Assuming 7.5.6 will run on the Linkstation NAS, how do I upgrade the server on the NAS? I previously ran Twonky on the NAS (when I only had the Roku) and it seemed smoother/less hungry than Squeezeserver. When I got the Boom, I wiped the NAS and installed Squezebox Server using telnet etc. Whilst I can follow instructions etc and got there in the end I don't really understand exactly what is going on and therefore need to follow step by step guides I'm afraid. Would it be possible to revert to Twonky (I suspect not) or what's the easiest (least likely to brick!) way to upgrade the Server s/w on the NAS? I've previously googled around looking for this but couldn't find a definitive guide? cheers again -- onemeg onemeg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=45195 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88974 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

onemeg;642768 Wrote: > I'm confused then how the Touch somehow, for a while, happily worked > with the 7.3.3 but I take your point. I strongly suspect you never actually had the Touch running with 7.3.3. It may have been running off its internal server, or off of mysqueezebox.com. onemeg;642768 Wrote: > Assuming 7.5.6 will run on the Linkstation NAS, how do I upgrade the > server on the NAS? First you are correct that Twonky will not work with Squeezeboxes. You need Squeezebox Server 7.5.0 or later to work with the Touch. Which instructions did you use to install 7.3.3? That would be a starting point for trying to get 7.5.x or 7.6 beta on the LinkStation. Also check the 3rd Party Hardware forum here, which is where most NAS things are discussed. If you have an external USB hard drive handy you may want to seriously consider experimenting with using the Touch's built-in server ("TinySBS") instead of using the NAS as the server. Unfortunately, if you use TinySBS you won't be able to use the NAS for your music library -- TinySBS only works with a USB device attached to the Touch or a SecureDigital memory card inserted in the Touch. If you get TinySBS working okay (it's not reliable, but it does work fine for some people) then that would also work as the server for your Boom. I suppose TinySBS would leave the Roku out of the picture, but I guess you could keep running that off the NAS. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88974 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?
I thought I was going mad as I was 99% sure I had the touch running off the NAS - and after a bit of faffing about today I achieved it again. Essentially, the Touch is saying I need to update the server software HOWEVER on logging into Sqeezebox Server on the laptop and selecting the Touch in the player drop down menu, the Touch then run from the NAS. It's 100% running from the NAS as it's got my entire MP3 collection on there, playlists and everything and this playlists in particular are only on the NAS Is this news? I really hope this doesn't fail as I'm otherwise bought a £200 white elephant! I welcome anyones thoughts and comments. Well, if the Touch is working problem free off of 7.3.3, then yes, that is news. Certainly the developers are of the view that 7.5.0 or later is required for the Touch. It was 5 mins ago ;o) Full MP3 catalogue is there, album art displays, playlists are working I'll see what's whats over the next couple of days but at the current time, it would seem that if the Touch is selected as the 'active' player in the Server on the NAS (i.e. accessed via a pc) it'll play despite the NAS only having 7.3.3 installed. Have even used the Boom in between without causing any issues. -- onemeg onemeg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=45195 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88974 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

ok. Now I'm a bit peeved. I was faffing about trying to get the daylight clock working and somehow managed to screw up the screen when powered down so that it was blank rather than showing the clock. I've done a factory reset and now it's not working again as the Server software on the laptop isn't showing it as a player! Uh, wait a minute. A couple posts back you said that the -"Server is only installed on the NAS"-. Now you say the server is installed on the laptop, too. Which is it? Were you possibly running SBS on the laptop, and only getting the files from the NAS (as opposed to connecting to SBS running on the NAS)? Also, you don't need to get the Touch connected to show what's on the SBS Settings Information tab. It's there any time the server is running, even if nothing is connected. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88974 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?
Thanks for the clarification. I asked about the info from the Information tab basically to be sure about the same point. You're probably not going to like this answer, but I suggest you either find a way to get 7.5.x or 7.6 running, or you return the Touch. There's a good reason why "SBS 7.5 or later" is mentioned on the "System Requirements" section of the Touch's web page and product box. You may have somehow managed to get the Touch running on 7.3.3, but I strongly suspect the unreliable behavior you're getting with the Touch is exactly because 7.3.3 does not support the Touch (or the Radio, for that matter). Some Touch features may work with 7.3.3, but then at some point in the normal use of the Touch it asks SqueezeCenter to do something that the server doesn't understand, because it's a feature that is unique to the Touch, and therefore 7.3.3 is unaware of it. The way I see it, your main options for running 7.5.x or 7.6 are: 1) figure out how to update the SBS on your NAS. I have run 7.6 on a different LinkStation (Pro v1). It's probably possible to get it running on yours, but it will probably take a bit of work. 2) Run SBS on a different computer, such as your laptop, a re-purposed desktop, a small form factor computer, or even a NAS that has better SBS support, like a Vortexbox. If you like you can still keep the music library on the NAS. 3) Run TinySBS (the Touch's built-in server) on the Touch. The downsides are that you would not be able to use it for the Roku, and you would need to move your music library to a USB drive. On the plus side, you could still run the Roku off the server on the NAS. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88974 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

We mainly use the Boom and Roku. Touch less so therefore I'm thinking you're right that I perhaps either run the Touch off an SD card and then keep the Boom and Roku running off the NAS. At least I can then listed to something until I build up the courage to get stuck into the NAS again I appreciate your help. It'll also teach me to leave well alone when I've got something working!!! After a few days where squeezecentre hasn't 'seen' the Touch on the network, as soon as I slotted in the SD card we were up and running again with the Touch happy to connect to the NAS and Squeezecentre seeing it as a player. That's just plain weird. Unless you're running TinySBS (which you're not), there's no reason why the presence or absence of a SD card should make a difference. It certainly doesn't on mine. yeah. I (clearly) am no expert but it seems to be that as long as the server sees it on the network it is ok. When inserting the SD card I got the TinySBS running and then the sever on the NAS pickud up the Touch again and now SD card is removed, it's connecting to the NAS again and streaming happily -- onemeg onemeg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=45195 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88974 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
