[slim] Moving On - In A Good Way
I've been using LMS and it's predecessors since I got a Slim Devices SB3 as a Christmas present in 2005 and I've no thoughts of leaving. Over the intervening years devices have come and gone and as my inevitable uptake of the new devices as also come and gone I have ended up with cupboards full of devices. So in the interest of a quick disposal of some of these "spare" devices I am selling a job lot of them at a really knock down price with only two provisos. 1. Payment by Pay Pal in full before collection is arranged. 2. Buyer must collect from me here in North Birmingham, UK. These two provisos are non negotiable. I'm not disposed to sell them separately on Ebay as I might have done in the past. So for a no quibble price of £150.00 I have all the following for collection. 1. SPEAKERS Wharfedale SuperDiamond c1987 Cherry Veneer innear perfect condition, drivers all working never been over-driven. 2. I agree that > the iPod Touch is a very advanced device, and the screen is clearly a winner. But as a pure music player it is over-kill. I suppose the real comparison is between the Sony Tipo and the iPod Nano. They have a similar "list" price of around £125 but the Sony can be bought for a street price of £80 whereas the Nano is almost never discounted significantly. The Nano has the advantage of being smaller, lighter and metal, but that is about it. For a start the Sony is a cell phone so has access to the web, email, maps and music/video download and streaming away from WiFi networks. It has a better screen, a camera, double the memory, longer battery life, a similar processor etc etc. I disagree with your point about the microSD card. Two other people at work have just bought Android phones and the first thing both did was to put in a 32GB card. The two biggest annoyances with any Apple mobile device is the fixed battery and the inability to expand the storage. The way Apple price the pods and pads according to their memory content is little short of criminal. How can they justify charging an extra £80 (the price of an entire Sony mobile phone!) for the 64GB iPod Touch compared to the 32GB version? If they made the batteries replaceable and had expandable storage then they might lose a bit on the margin but would remove two of the main reasons people go with the Android system. They would well and truly shoot Google's fox! Very short sighted marketing. Yes, both lines in Barcombe have been closed. No real through roads either. That's some journey for school. Uckfield or even Tunbridge Wells (where I want to school) would seem better placed. Odd to think you will have seen my house as you headed to Priory, a third of a mile before the Mills station and on the right the length of a field away. By itself except for a ruddy great Sussex Barn right next to it. The Anglers Rest is gone too. Bit of a shame really, otherwise it'd have been my local. Crowborough is well known for being a "Marilyn", defined as a high point with at least 500 feet (approx 150 m) of descent on all sides. There aren't many of them in East Sussex! For maps on iOS, it's worth taking a look at the 'UK Map' app, which lets you download the freely released OS maps at 1:50k and 1:25k scales, as much as you can fit on your phone. These maps don't have quite as much detail as the proper Landranger and Explorer maps but you can't fault the value for money. nekomatic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96877 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

When i got it for the iPhone it was £15 (over 3 times the price of my next most expensive app!) and it came with a good number of credits for OS map tiles. Three years later and I've still not exhausted my credit. I have much of East and West Sussex as either 50 or 25 (or both) scales and also South and North Cornwall. I think they may have changed the way the licensing works now. It's certainly not the same on Android anyway. Shame about the lack of storage. otherwise it sounds like ViewRanger would be right up your street. I also walk a lot in the countryside (and have dog too). I use it to report the position of Sea Trout redds (photo, point on map, description, email to local Rivers Trust)... and in a similar way rare species to the local Wild Life Trust. The GPS is every bit as accurate as the dedicated GPS devices used by some other Rivers Trust volunteers. ModelCitizen wrote: > > > > > The only way a smart phone will destroy your experience of being outside > is if you let it, actually not even if you let it... if you make it so.I > couldn't agree more! I have similar uses for my smartphone - except I don't have so many specialist apps. My phone has limited storage so I keep my apps to the minimum but do use internet for things like bird recognition (RSPB). I wouldn't be without the phone in the outdoors but it's not for the traditional reasons. I walk anything from 30 to 60 miles a week with my dog and use the GPS in the phone to track our distances. I have a couple of walking apps which show both the sublime and the ridiculous. One is called "My Tracks", whcih is a Google linked app and came pre-loaded on the phone. It does not have OS mapping but has a very simple road map style that has no terrain detail (well, no detail at all actually) but you can easily upload your walk to Google maps. However, it is not accurate - and you can see it zig-zagging all over the place as you traverse your route. My lady has the same on her phone and we did a test. Over a short distance we both used the app and then compared notes afterwards - mine stated I had done 4 miles whilst hers stated 2.5!!! Now the second app is rather different in pretty much every way to that. It is called MM Tracker and uses Memory Map .qct mapping. It has full functionality of that of a dedicated GPS and has the full OS map with all the required detail. It has proven to be (I'd hesitate to claim any GPS was 100% accurate) highly trustworthy, both in current location and distance travelled. When you compare the monthly charge of £8, the free Smartphone and the cost of the app (£5 or 6), it is a pretty useful tool. I would stress that I can map-read and use a compass and don't use the app for route finding, as such. Where it is useful when you are in the mountains, is when a top has lots of knobbly lumps and the actual summit is unclear - the GPS can show you which it is. Otherwise, I just use it to track our daily walk distance and for that it is brilliant. I do have other outdoor apps for weather (again, very helpful as a GUIDE and not to be taken seriously) and various one relating to British hills and mountains. Other than that, a couple of music ones - Shazam and Soundhound (which must be familiar here) and a brilliant one called "TuneIn Radio" which gives me pretty much any radio station available on the internet. I find the idea that a phone and the outdoors are incompatible with experiencing peace, solitude or wilderness. My phone is used as a backup and a backup only when I am in the mountains. I don't think about it as a phone but it's there if I wanted to use it in an emergency (notwithstanding the unreliable signal). Even the most careful and experienced mountain people step on a boulder and break an ankle. That said, responsible us of the phone is paramount when using it outdoors. I have seen many cases of idiots going ill-prepared and ill-equipped who call mountain rescue because they are tired or because they are lost, often when their mobile phone has no signal or because they are using road-style GPS, or even because they don't know how to use it. There is also an etiquette issue - I would not allow myself to get to a top and then call the missus and say "you'll never guess where I am!" at the top of my voice. I also would not want to listen to music in the outdoors, even though I have some uploaded to the phone. I prefer the sounds of the countryside to music and much prefer to hear the wind in the grass, the bleat of distant sheep and the odd raven or buzzard. If you want to ensure that the phone remains unobtrusive outdoors, there is a very simple method to ensure that remains so - don't give people your number! My mobile is known by my garage, doctor and dentist, none of whom phone me but just text messages). Other than that it's one mate and my missus and that's it. You didn't find the cow in the river more interesting then? There is only 02 here, but it works. I do live in a slightly elevated position, and it is in East Sussex. The fungi and birdwatching apps, the torch and many others do not depend upon a phone signal, and neither does Viewranger (the great OS map app). GPS is often more important than the phone signal too. I think the important thing is that, signal or no signal, in such a small device you have a whole rucksack full of useful utilities. Call it travelling light. The only way a smart phone will destroy your experience of being outside is if you let it, actually not even if you let it... if you make it so. I recall several years ago going out for a very short X-Country ski in the woods. Before the ski the leader asked the members of the group whether anyone had a cell phone in case of accident. Many people said they had their trusted cell phones with them and thought it a very good idea. While you may find this reasonable I find it ludicrous. The ski took all of half an hour at which point we were back in the car park. I really can't fath om why people would want to destroy the experience of being away from civilization and in nature by bringing technology with them. I realize most of you don't understand my view point and say it can just be turned off. Yes an accident could happen but if you are that frightened of being in the forest for half an hour it is probably best to stay at home. To put it into perspective in 1976-7 when cell phones didn't exist I cycled across Canada in 2 consecutive summers. While dangerous I guess ,I know my experience would not have been the same and in fact worse if I was tethered to technology like a smart phone. You can always stick your phone on silent or redirect calls if you like and then you'd have a useful device on you that you could use: * As a compass * To see where the public footpaths were * To identify mushrooms * To identify birds * To identify trees from their leaves * To identify wild flowers an orchids * To ring the local farmer if you should find one of his cows has fallen into the river * To use as a torch when it gets dark * To tell you what time it will get dark * To identity the various constellations once it is dark * To find and dwellings near you when you get lost in the dark * To map and measure the size of a field At one time or another I've used my iPhone for all of these things and I frequently use it to identify things (for the last few days mostly edible mushrooms) I spend a lot of time outside as I live in the middle of the countryside. I guess the world is passing me by. Neither my wife nor I have ever had a cell phone or tablet. Personally the thought of constantly being available, which I think is the curse of the cell phone, repels me. I like technology but I like to leave it at home when I go out. The thought of texting people, receiving calls from telemarketers or other unwanted calls far outweighs the value of these devices for me. In the face of the competition how > Apple can justify those prices beats me. Well for a start the Sony has a relatively poor 320x480 screen, that is FIVE times less pixels than the iPod touch screen. The Touch (and the iPhone 5) has what is probably the best quality screen on any mobile device at the moment (better than the iPad 3 even). The Sony is over TWICE as thick as the iPod touch and weighs slightly more. The Sony is made of plastic, the iPod is somewhat better built. The iPod has a pretty good camera, including flash. The Sony, not so much. The iPod's CPU is over twice the speed of the Sony's. The battery life on the iPod is the same as the Sony, despite the far better screen and CPU. The Sony is indeed a bargain, but there -are- reasons it is much cheaper than the iPod (beyond purely Apple's higher profit margins). When it comes down to it the iPod touch isn't really competing with the Sony. People who want a 32GB MP3 player/Internet device are mostly going to go and consider the iPod touch first, it is going to occur to very few "normal" people to go and buy an £80 Android phone and stick 32GB of microSD in it, most people wouldn't even know that is possible. Don't be mislead by the relative speed of you old iPod touch to the Sony, the current iPod touch is much faster that even the 4th gen one. andynormancx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17417 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96877 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Moving on...
Well to each his / her own to say the least. I for one will not move to anything if it does not support a good base for syncs. In my house we use syncronization lots and a phone with music player is not going to get me there without some other technology supporting it. I have 5 rooms in my house with slim / logi products and control them with iPeng and browser clients. Not long ago my child came to me and asked if she could have a boom for her bedroom or something else tied into our music system. She had amplified speakers that she plugged into her cell phone which for a time she thought was the best. I did a bit of relocation of items and gave her one of my booms which she loves but agreed that when she upgrades her phone to a iPhone I will get her iPeng with playback and she can then go back to her amped speakers. This way she gets the best for her which is her own libary of music to take with her and access to over 16,000+ tracks in our music library. And yes, she will even be able to sync with iPeng if she wants. froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96877 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

One of the Controllers was from the beta program so I think it's probably not supposed to work now. The other one was always frustrating (dropped signal, slow scrolling, badly executed UI) so I don't really miss them! Orange Squeeze on the Nexus 7 tablet provides the best experience but lacks some higher level features (e.g sync), but as I only use very infrequently (e.g sync) this doesn't trouble me and If i need one I open the free Logitech app instead. It's taken me by surprise just how clunky, heavy and overlarge iPads seem after using a 7" tablet for only a short while. BTW. here was a Groupon offer for a 7" Gemini tablet with latest Android OS yesterday at £59. Incredible. ModelCitizen wrote: > Both of my Controllers are bricks. Won't charge. I've changed the > batteries but they just run out and never recharge. The bases are OK and > so are the devices. The connections between them make. It's baffling. That's a shame. When I drop mine into its dock the screen brightens and it makes a small beep to indicate it has made a connection and is charging. I presume yours don't? Sounds like some wiring has come adrift internally that links the charging connections on the base with the battery. Odd that it should happen on both units, not heard of that before. I have heard of Controllers where the base charging contacts do not properly contact those on the Controller itself, as I am sure you have too as you say the connections are OK. I am sure you will have pursued the "bit of paper stuffed down the back" fix or the "get them to send you a new base" fix. Mine has been a pretty robust unit given all the abuse heaped on it by the family. Food covered hands have been the biggest hazard, along with red wine (my fault), blu-tack (my youngest thought it would be better wall mounted) and guinea pig wee (don't ask). I bought a spare battery but have not needed it yet and, luckily, somebody told me early on to set the screen saver to "off" as the screen darkens over time if used to display pretty patterns, the news, a clock or whatever. Just before they announced SB was to be discontinued Superfi were selling Controllers off at £60. A bargain compared to the RRP so I bought one as a backup. If, as seems likely, we all end up with smartphones it will probably just gather dust. Probably not one of my wisest purchases! Yes, I mean it's a lovely touch screen fixed in place by the wires to the amp/speakers which seems inconvenient/unnecessary when you've got use to controlling all elements of your music systems via a phone/handheld. Obviously a different case than a Boom or a Radio which are combined player/controllers and tend to be nearfield (i.e. radio by bed)... mind you, I still often use the phone or a tablet to control the radio two feet from my head as the UIs are much better thought out than the Logitech ones, and the tablet screen especially, easier to see. Are you saying that you no longer use it as a streamer? Or just that just the screen is superfluous? If my amplifier and speakers are static there is no need for the "player" to be mobile or in a dock. In fact, with my kids, probably better that it is wired in and can't be used for games or facebook. A lot of expensive high-tech stuff there. Your 52 years have obviously been more lucrative than mine. I think you are a bit mean to the controller - it was quite cool in its day and would have been "bleeding edge tech" if it had come out a year or so earlier. However it was launched just after the first iPhone and iPod Touch so was very quickly outshone by them when used with iPeng. Its biggest problem was not its looks but its reliability - which was a disaster to begin with. Ours is still ugly, and the wheel is impossible if text searching, but it is now reliable and fine when picking music if no text entry is required. It is still used more than my iPod Touch with iPeng in our house simply because the iPod Touch has usually been snaffled by some kid and is nowhere to be found. The Controller, because it has no other use, can always be found in its dock. I will use my phone as a controller, but my wife has had the app on hers for about a year now and I often find her with the phone in one hand and the Controller in the other. In fact in terms of "features" (plug-ins etc) the competition are not even half-way there, and likely never will be as most, like AirPlay and Sonos, are closed proprietary protocols. Unfortunately not enough people are sophisticated, like wot you am and I is, and aren't prepared to invest the time and effort into a SB system in order to get the best out of it. Most people just want to choose music and press the play button. Still, as long as the LMS server is running on my NAS and my two Receivers hold out then I will stick with it for my static streamers. They made a few mistakes though, the Duet being the biggest one as it was such a bast@ard to set up and was buggy as hell until about the fifth firmware upgrade. Set up properly using net-UDAP mine have been super-reliable for over three years now, but I could easily have binned them in anger lots of times before that. Well I'm 52. :-) I've had iPhones for a few years now, and also have a Google Nexus 7. My wife (whose phone I borrow as and when) has an HTC desire and son an iPod. We use iPeng on the Apple devices (although the latest update has confused us and is very flaky on my 3GS) and Orange Squeeze/Logitech App on the Androids. They all work supremely well as controllers (really knock the spots off *all* the Logitech hardware devices in terms of usability and ui design) and the iDevices work well as players (with disparate docking stations). My favourite is the Google Nexus with Orange Squeeze, as the now playing screen looks so good, the app is so straightforward and fast and the Nexus 7 a useful all round device for having around the house (perfect screen size for aging eyes, fits in cargo pant pockets). I run one server and have multiple wireless repeaters so the wireless signal stretches over a couple of acres (to garage, workshop, barby area and pond). Having looked at the iPhone I suspect that the (expensive) iPhone series is past its sell by date. With the Nexus 7 Google finally managed to get their Android OS to iOS standard (and in many ways I now prefer it). So for me, it'll be Android phone and tablets as controllers and to a smaller degree as players from now on. and when I've finally finished off my house and re-bought some Naim audio stuff I'll resurrect the Squeezebox Plus. Still like the Radio, Boom and Classic though but no time for the Duet (and certainly not the hideous Controller) and the Touch is just a bit of a white elephant (makes a nice clock though). Yes, I think I'm with you. Though I think you are overlooking one important aspect the Squeezebox-brand [had...]. Namely a unique status as a high-fidelity, high-quality, feature rich (almost "complete"), very reasonably priced streaming solution. Even with todays plethora of offerings, the competition isn't quite there yet. Some such as Naim, Linn and the big high-fi names are much more expensive, mainstream high-fi is not there yet as far as features and quality, Sonos is still "low-res", etc. Squeezebox have (had) its foot solidly planted in the music/tech/high-fi communities - people where using Touches as sources in major $$$ systems and *everyone* agreed that they where that good - or one would at least, as the saying goes in high-fi, "have to spend major $$$ to achieve better". The Boom/Radio where, for many, nice system-completing additions for streaming to the toilet and such places. As I said I dont think any other brand had such a good standing. There will always be a place for a static streamer but SB has more competition these days from Apple AirPlay and DLNA as well as Sonos. Also, if you want to pay too much money, there are plenty of "hi-fi" streamers out there. Some, like Linn, even offer multi-room sync. In that environment you can the Squeezebox market share gradually being eaten into. You also forget that in most modern homes there is more than one smartphone. My wife has one and my daughter is angling for one. My eldest son would love one but he would spend every hour of the day playing games on it. I already have to hide the iPod Touch! ModelCitizen wrote: > Smart phone and/or tablet = controller and/or player and has done for a > long time now > > Does it ever worry you that you are so far behind? :D Its my age you know, we oldies are slower on the uptake... I was on a two year phone contract and didn't really bother looking around until it was coming to an end. My wife has a 2 year old HTC Wildfire Android phone, but that obviously was not mine to play with! She is also rather less interested in the tech than me. She wanted an iPhone, because all her friends have them, but decided it was too expensive and went with the "poor man's iPhone" as she calls it. She just uses it for calls, text, e-mail and calendar duties. She didn't even possess a pair of headphones before I bought her some last week! AFAIK it has only been possible to use an Android phone as "player" since May 2011 when Bluegaspode launched his little app. But I suppose 18 months is an absolute age in technology these days. [slim] Moving on...
Just got a glimpse of the future, and it is phone shaped. I have been a bit late to the smartphone market. I have an old 2nd generation iPod Touch but it was a bit sluggish with apps so did not really go far down that route. My cell phone contract came up for renewal and I needed to economise so ditched my 3 year old Nokia and expensive contract and bought the cheapest Android ICS phone I could find on a £10.50 "sim only" monthly tariff which has twice the "minutes" of my old contract, unlimited texts and 500MB data for 2/3 of the monthly cost of my old contract. The phone is a Sony Xperia Tipo which cost £80 + £10 for a 32GB microSD card bringing the total cost to around a 1/3 that of a new 32GB iPod Touch and only 2/3 of a 16GB Nano! In the face of the competition how Apple can justify those prices beats me. The screen of the Tipo is quite small but is very slick. Apps are noticeably quicker to respond than my old iPod and although a bit fiddly I am getting used to typing - landscape mode helps. But wow! how things have moved on... The phone side is so much more capable than the Nokia, with all my e-mail and texts in one place, all my contacts stored in the Google cloud (and backed up of course) and a shared calendar with my wife (life saver!). This gives me all the old PDA functions with knobs on - and automatically synced between phone and PC. On the apps side my requirement is for a mainly audio stuff so I have already installed Spotify, Squeeze Player, Squeeze Commander, official Squeezebox app, Last.fm, PodTrapper, BBC iPlayer and TrackID - not to mention converting about 70% of my music to 120kbps VBA MP3 and dropping it onto the SD card which only half fills it, leaving room for photos and video. I even have access to my full music collection on my NAS from anywhere with a mobile or wi-fi signal using a handy Synology app. Installed a few games to play while I listen to the music too. And of course there is the maps and GPS and I have added a compass app (which has come in handy already!). ..oh and there is a camera of course. The crunch bit for Logitech is that with the Squeezebox app and Squeeze Player I now have a free Squeezebox - and if I bought a bluetooth speaker it would not be much different from a SB Radio. I am beginning to understand now how Logitech might have felt it was not worth making any more SB hardware if you can effectively get it all for free on your phone. In fact I am surprised they even bothered with the UE Radio. The one thing this does not do, of course, is hi-fi quality reproduction and reliable multi-room synch. There is still a place for a SB Touch / Receiver type device - which is where, unfortunately, Sonos are now going to take over. Ho hum.
