Re: [slim] 3rd party PLAYER hardware
Proxying through SBS always works, as SlimProto is then handled through the SBS, MySB.com is only serving additional content like Radio stations and Apps. The streams always come from the content providers so are not routed through MySB.com. And when you see your iPad on MySB.com then it is because the Server registers all it's own known players on MySB.com. And yes - there are also some inconsistencies with direct connections to MySB.com when a server was in play before. But the behaviour is very inconsistent over time. Try with a new MySB.com account and you'll see that you won't be able to connect any soft-player. And even if it might work some day by chance don't tell anyone. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Re: [slim] 3rd party PLAYER hardware
How will (or do already) things work with LMS 7.7 using DLNA then?? For example, I am considering one of Yamaha or Pioneers new AV Receivers which both are DLNA capable. I would like to continue to be able to use SBS, sorry LMS, with iPeng (or similar, or my Squeezecontroller for that matter) and I want to stream directly to the Receiver instead of going through the Squeezeplayer. I guess the typical setup would otherwise be to use PlugPlayer or some other similar DLNA control point. But the functionality re music that I have with SBS today, coupled with the nice interface I get with iPeng or Squeezepad or others is really what I am after... So what's the status here, I noticed iPeng just updated to be 7.7 compatible but what does that really mean? From a speculation standpoint I guess there are two ways this could happen; Either that LMS can serve DLNA devices still being controlled by traditional controllers, including my Squeezecontroller. Or that iPeng and others become DLNA control points as well... -- Gblenn Gblenn's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22759 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91044 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It's just not feasible on a WiFi device. Thanks for the reply pippin! If you by controlling DLNA devices mean that the AV Receiver can't truly and FULLY be controlled, I am perfectly happy using e.g. the Yamaha remote to turn it on or off, and choose which input to use. That's basically what I do today, actually I don't even have a remote for my Amp, that's how old it is... But once it's on, a DLNA control point should be able to detect and control it to the extent it is controllable by DLNA standards. And by the way, DLNA does not require the controller to be either in the server or the renderer, it can be a third device... In fact in the case of a Phone or Tablet, that is a very likely use. I assume you are aware of how things work on e.g. PlugPlayer where it detects the Server and Renderer and controls both. I choose which media to stream from the server and I choose which renderer/player to view/hear it on. If a player is not on, it is greyed out of course. I can control Volume up/down on my TV today, when viewing a video from my server (Twonky) or Internet based content (YouTube) for example. I can do ff/rew to some extent depending on server I use. Actually for Video I think DLNA is still not working to the extent I would like. Basically it's a codec issue where e.g. my TV is only doing the minimum of what DLNA stipulates (in Sony's case it does only Mpeg2 and h.264). Pictures work fine since jpeg is more or less universal. Music works since mp3 is in the standard and most servers have the horsepower to transcode if required. But basically for a simple task like listening to music, the Yamaha player only needs to be controlled in terms of which Source (stream) to play and the Volume I assume. The rest is up to the server, as I guess it's done today albeit proprietary. Or is crossfading for example done at the squeezeplayer or is it happening in the server, or both even? In any case, what I am thinking then is that with LMS and in your case iPeng, one could actually do some kind of Hybrid. Basically controlling what can/needs to be controlled using DLNA on the Player side (my perhaps to be Yamaha Receiver). And on the server side keep doing what you already do so well today, inkluding any and all extras like searching on the internet, viewing the album art etc! Weather this is done the DLNA way or the Squeezebox way is not really relevant as long as LMS is able to serve the stream... BUT, perhaps some DLNA controlling is needed also on the server side, I don't know though. I could guess that when changes happen in the stream that the server may have to do certain checks and acks towards the player maby? But I don't know DLNA at all from that perspective to really say... What concerns WiFi, I don't thinkt it is much of a limitation in this area though. Except that it may introduce some lag and other connectivity related issues. But that I have already today with Squeezebox Duet, like when the controller loses connection to the server and has to search for a little while. Which may be a slight problem when the phone rings and you want to lower the volume or pause the music quickly... ;) -- Gblenn Gblenn's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22759 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91044 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Yes, and you are probably aware how limited that is unless you can use e.g. Twonkly's extensions to the DLNA standard. And I don't believe here that Logitech is doing anything to extend it. I know that theoretically the control point can be separate, however, a DLNA control point takes FULL control of the renderer, that is: if you take away the control point (e.g. because it's going to sleep) then the player will play the rest of the song and that's it. DLNA renderers don't have a concept like a playlist or their own state, it's not like sending remote commands to the renderer, it's like the renderer does absolutely NOTHING without the control point. It's actually the same for the Squeezebox but in the Squeezebox worls, the control point is part of the server and the remote control apps and devices are just a user interface for the control point. I can control Volume up/down on my TV today, when viewing a video from my server (Twonky) or Internet based content (YouTube) for example. I can do ff/rew to some extent depending on server I use. Actually for Video I think DLNA is still not working to the extent I would like. That's because TVs and multimediaplayer usually contain a control point themselves but that CP usually requires a TV to be on for their user interface. And there is no DLNA way to control another CP. Re: [slim] 3rd party PLAYER hardware
By the way I should have mentioned that I have actually started to test LMS 7.7 on a separate PC. I have only spent a few minutes doing some very basic and initial testing with just a few folders of music. But using e.g. PlugPlayer or a similar Controller on an Android device I can see the LMS server, I can choose folders and songs. I can play it on my iPad, my TV and my Android device. And I see cover art and other basic info on the Controller... So far so good then, but what I have not yet tested is to switch my SB Controller, or iPeng, over to that server and see what happens when I start changing songs etc... If the connection to the renderer is maintained, and whatever changes I do on the Controller (except for volume though) is reflected at the player end, I will be quite happy to be honest... Although it's not my favourite world to be in, having to use: 1. Yamaha remote to turn on and choose input. 2. DLNA Controller to initiate connection and streaming. 3. My controller of choice for continued listening... The key here is to be able to benefit from both worlds really, my choice of Renderer/Player, and all the goodies from SB Server/iPeng... -- Gblenn Gblenn's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22759 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91044 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] 3rd party PLAYER hardware
I think your 'hybrid' controller is already PlugPlayer together with LMS. When you connect one of your Squeezeboxes to LMS server, they are available via PlugPlayer as well - along your with other devices. Be aware of some limitations though: as Pippin already mentioned, DLNA has a somewhat flawed concept when it comes to control points and renderers. The actual playlist is completely managed by PlugPlayer, when a song is finished it sends the next song to the device/media renderer (you can observe that on the Squeezebox - its own playlist only contains a single song) - so make sure, your iPad always has full power, otherwise your devices will go silent. Then also all features for which I bought a Squeezebox are not available in this DLNA-hybrid-mode. Synchronization, Gapless playlist, Apps, Advances Plugins. Also special features of SqueezePad or iPeng like fast browsing due to caching are not available for DLNA. Personally I'm also not very happy with PlugPlayer. It always feels s slow - but of course this is due to the whole DLNA spec. I also already thought about moving SqueezePad to DLNA (actually as a separate App, not hybrid for Squeezeboxes). But if you observe how much work it is for Logitech alone to create a DLNA server that only supports the Revue properly and has/had big problems with all other renderers - then I'm not really sure if I wanted to spend my free time with the can of worms that DLNA is. I mean me and pippin often enough complain about protocols, API and consistency in the Squeezebox-World - but compared to DLNA what we experienced so far was a joy. Then looking at the pricing (half the price) and the ranks of PlugPlayer (often on par with iPeng or SqueezePad) then at least me has decided, that starting to train playing piano again is the better choice :) -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Where DLNA becomes an add on more than a replacement within or on the side of SBS. Today using PlugPlayer with LMS 7.7 is actually not at all what I mean with Hybrid, it's more or less just DLNA... And I agree with you that it is limited, although I don't think the playlist part is such a big problem. I would have a problem if my iPad or SB Controller died on me also with SBS. It would just take a little longer than a single song before I noticed... I guess another way of doing it the Hybrid way, would be if one could set up a DLNA server (on the LMS host HW) who's only purpose would be to send the SBS stream to any non Squeezebox HW (DLNA capable). Basically capturing the stream and repackaging it to be sent to a DLNA device. That way one could even use SBS of earlier revisions. -- Gblenn Gblenn's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22759 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91044 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

carled;664420 Wrote: ok, cool thanks. That's useful to know. It seems to me that his best/cheapest/simplest combination option would be the squeezebox radio with the 3.5mm out connected to his A/V amp. If he wants to double his cost he can go for the touch with the optical/digital out. So, for example, if he got a hacked joggler, it would speak to squeezebox server on his pc/a nas device but it would not speak to the mysqueezebox.com service? To an A/V amp you are best advised to use a Touch and it's digital output. The 3,5mm analog out is mainly for headphones sq is not fantastic. Modest priced A/V amps do not have any true analog passthru so the analog inputs will be digitized again . The radio is a standalone piece with headphone out, it works fine for it's intended purpose, it has no digital out. It will be some hassle volume controll is always active on the 3,5 and you will forget to turn it down when disconnecting the 3,5 mm (you want full volume if used as a source ) -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. For me this was much more usefull than a touch or a radio. The hacking is pretty easy to do. Just google a little arround for O2 Joggler. Trev not really sure. I've bought a lot of stuff directly from logitech (most of my SB players) and they occasionally send me an email with a discount percentage. Sometimes folks get the special codes and even post them here at this forum. Don't really know. p.s. This got me to thinking, and I went out today and bought another TOUCH for a backup (when and if my Transporter bites the dust) at $209 in the US. -- garym System 1: Vortexbox Appliance 6TB (1.10) SbS 7.6.2 Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio) System 2: Win7(64) laptop SbS 7.6.2 TouchBenchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio and laptop) Retired: SB3, Duet Receiver Controlled at both locations with: iPhone (iPeng), iPad (iPengHD SqueezePad), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.6 on Win7(64) laptop Ripping (FLAC) - dbpoweramp, Additional Tagging - mp3tag garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91044 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

carled;664415 Wrote: Hi all New here and trying to help a friend out. The 3rd party hardware section here seems all about servers. That may come in handy (for me!) with time, but I'm looking at alternatives for a player. Ideally it would have digital/optical out, but 3.5mm out is fine if not. Doesn't have to be wireless either, as hardwired is available in this instance. I mean something like a hacked joggler, for example. Are there any other cheap media players around that allow for squeezeplayer to be installed? I'd like it so that the player can access mysqueezebox.com as well as/instead of a pc running squeezeserver. Any help greatly appreciated, many thanks. Carl Does the Radio play what you want?
