Please subscribe to the user list or dev list or make a bug report.

I never intended to put ACCESS in our documentation, if we must as Jean
showed above we could use "MS Office's Data Base" ... ICCC indeed
:)

What I was doing is giving some brainstormig response for the questions Dan
asked, it was just that ... branstorming.

BASE is LibO's FREE, OPEN, AND MORE FLEXIBLE (since we now can connect to
every major DB out there) Data Base interaction program. It is a program
that fits for SIMPLISTIC Databases (it can get complicated jobs done, but
if you are into those you are in to less hassle if you rethink your DB
interaction needs), it is OUR substitute for that ugly thing those other
guys call Access (but our program needs some work to get known and some
major uplift on the development side - documentation withstanding :)) .

Well that of course is just IMHO ...

HSQLDB is java based little gremlin (that even bites you in the hand when
you DO FOLLOW their user manual), we should KILL it ... now!!!

Thank heavens devs got around to put the postgresql driver in this (3.5)
release, or I would never even try to get people interested in translating
the BASE manuals (altough I of course haven't read them - not old ou new -
so my opinion is worth a little less than that of the Easter Bunny).

Base seems to be abandoned in the dev front also ... the bugs abound and
the work is meek. The last GOOD news I saw about this component was that
the drivers for "serious" DB like MySQL and PostgreSQL were being tuned to
work with 3.5 ... it IS a shame.

Spliting guides woule be DESASTROUS ... imagine someone trying to get help
on a guide having to find the info they need on ANOTHER guide ... sorry
this will not work, it is easier to have a step by step aproach and let
those who need it jump to the sections they want.

GS with BASE whould IMHO be related to the simple task of making a adress
book (see BASE TUTORIAL by Mariano Casanova)

At least this is what we plan on translating next for BASE in Brazil

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Documentation suggestions for Impress

2012-02-04 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
Thanks for the interest in the LibreOfffice product, but this is a list
about the DOCUMENTATION of the software, if you need something modified
from WITHIN the software, say an onscreen error or redundancy (as you so
perfectly put it) should be done on a DEVELOPMENT list.

We can try to see if someone here has the capacility to change these
things, but it is not our list goal.

I recomend you put these observations in a bug report at bugzilla
(freedesktop bugs under LibreOffice) and post the bug lso in a DEV list

But I agree that these Impress Wizards REALLY need some work for the user
experience to improve

Thanks

The original document does not have the license in it it has a link to the
site of the license, can this be used in our translation?

And in my copy there is no mention to the contributors to this document,
how do I find them out ?

[libreoffice-documentation] The License to Translate Ooo Basic Guide

2012-01-30 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
Ok so there is someone in the Brazilian team that is interested in
translating the Ooo's BasicGuide for macro programing.

What I would like to know is how did we get the first Writer book converted
to LibO ?

1) What did we do with the license?

I am about to change the template form Ooo's docs do our own, can I use the
license we use usually?

Since it is a translation, do I need to bother?

Err... What is the question? How to see if LibO is being used and what

If it pleases the team I would be willing to give it another reshaping, but
I won't if it will be kept a secret as it is currently :)

No problem ... I wrote those instructions for the wiki and for myself, but
I have little time to spare, so if it will not be used anywhere, I preffer
to spend my time in other endeavors.

I'll await your input

Rogerio

PS: @Peter, good to see you did it, but if we were to debug the problem we
should have some more info ... but forget that for now and on to your work
:)

[libreoffice-documentation] Printing Exporting ... etc.

2011-12-05 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
I worked on the GSG for pt-br in the chapter for Printing and did a little
tweaking that I see as a more intuitive way do adress delimitors for these
chapters. I would like to try it in English.

How should I proceed ?

1) send the small tweak here on list for approval ?

2) edit the GS chapter to the changes I expect get merged ? And then if
they are approved jsut change the other Printing chapters (Calc, Writer,
etc...) ?

Thx

[libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started Guide in Portuguese (pt-br)

2011-11-18 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
Hello again.

I am proud to announce that the first EVER final version of the LibreOffice
"Getting Started Guide" has recently been published in Brasilian-Portuguese
(pt-br)

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/pt-br/Tradu%C3%A7%C3%A3o#Guia_do_Iniciante

We are now devoted to finishing the last revisions of the Writer Guide and
soon Calc and Impress will follow.

Rogerio

PS: I see that the English GSG is has some out-dated figures and some
passages were dificult to understand. If I can get some work done on them
is there any interest on the English Team?

I have been away form the list and from Afresco for a while, so if someone
can tell me how to go about this work it would be grand ;)

I think the monography book is too expecific to Brasil to be of any use in
another language.

Klaibson's book has to be compared with the Getting Started Series.

The thing is that there are literally HUNDREDS of Distros that consider
themselves "major" Linux Distros.

We should try one of two approaches:

1) Do the .deb and .rpm pages and maybe a openSUSE specific page and leave
all the rest to their own distro-specific support , and maybe ask for a nice
packaged source installer to cover anything else from the the devs.

2) Expect that anyone can install from their repos, and let the developers
that need to install from packages/source to their own luck (after all they
*are* developers)

Either way I think (and that is why I stopped working on the file and on the
installation wiki page) that this is work with no future. All major distros
have LibO in their repos, and people trying to test the RC releases have
managed to install them in their systems with-without-despite our futile
efforts to make available install instructions.

@ ALL:

We of the Brazilian community have just recently "enjoyed" a big fight over
the "who is who" inside the community (culminating with the extinction of
the NGO BrOffice). What I have learned is this:

1) People work in FOSS because of some sort of recognition by their peers
(or by people they think are their peers). This brings out the best and
worst of everybody (ego is a dangerous two sided dagger). So people enjoy
the feeling that *THEY* did something, this is so true that LibO has a
tracking system to show who is the most active in developing patches and in
the Wiki / l10n. And as such people start thinking things as theirs (my
contribution, my translation, my team, my work, my precious ;). But this all
is not ours, we have forfeit our right to call it ours when we registered
with the project and accepted the GNU / CC license.

2) People will try to undermine somebody who tries to take a leading role,
it is instinctive: "someone is trying to be my boss, but wait! ... I got
into this thing so I didn't have to say 'yes sir' anymore". And this is true
and valid, I for one will not tolerate being bossed around even for a
fraction of my free time. But without some sort of accountability, and
without some sort of "master map" we are all going to step on each others
toes (believe me ... we had 3 persons translating the same chapter of the GS
guide ... what a waist of time and resources and what a bummer for the
newcomers).

3) This kind of discussion may seem very tiresome (and I for one agree it is
just that), but organizing the work-flow, and the roles of our member base
is very important ... and must be done FIRST ... even if it takes a few
man-hours away from the actual practical job at hand. I am not putting one
minute of my free time in the documentation effort until I see a work-flow
(I have too little free time to waist on a project I am not convinced that
will be of any value)

4) Voting on the way we think things should get done is THE BEST way for
everybody to get satisfied. We had votes on people who were registered users
of our discussion lists, but voting within the "actual workforce" is best
(get the GS guides and see who did what, those people's votes should be more
important than anyone else's)

5) This thing was supposed to be FUN ... a little useful, but mostly FUN ...
you see, documentation will be for a minority of users, most of them will
work with basic on-hands knowledge of the product. And then there is the
wiki and the users mailing list ... the companies that will make the
transition to our software will do (at least the majority of them) a
in-house training of some sort.
We start out as being EXPENDABLE, our work is futile and is outdated as soon
as we print it ... but am I with all this, still having FUN? Sure, so I
continue ... when it seems to much like work, I'll get out the same day.

This is not to say that any of you are right or wrong, but we need to get
our speech in the same wave length.
But just to make my point perfectly clear: This discussion is happening
because people think the project is THEIRS (or at leas that they are PART of
it) when the actual situation is that we are DONATING time and work to the
project, we are not the project (and that is a good thing, or the hole
project would stop if we weren't here any more).

So ... are YOU still having FUN ?

Ok my problem with helping now is this:

Where do we stand?

Please see our Brazilian Wiki with the table of our work ... who is doing
what and so forth, maybe it is time we did something similar.

Before I get a big picture of the work done and the work needed I will not
venture in this as I am at risk of doing a job someone else has already
started ...

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffcie help wiki

2011-04-02 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
For what its worth:

We of the Brazilian Portuguese Team do the following:

All help BUILT INTO the program has to go through Pootle. HowTos and
documentation OUTSIDE the program are in our Wiki and ODFAuthors site.

I think the word Wiki for Help Content that will be incorporated INTO the
program is a flaw, it should be a web page. But the comment section on those
pages should be opened to discussion from outsiders.

And yes I agree that having someone as a janitor for the pages would
facilitate things.

Hey Gabriel,

How about giving the raw text a CC licence and puting it up so we can
translate it ?

Talk to your Publisher about "raw" text rights, without diagramation and
print sets.

Like what is done with [1]

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Ubuntu Community Documentation

2011-03-01 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
Ok let me explain it again...

The Community is reestablishing itself, FOR NOW we will use ODFAuthors as it
is the way people already work, but if Helmar shows a VALID and OPERATIONAL
work flow , I am sure people will migrate.

There is already a pt-br folder in Alfresco that I modified, so Helmar, be
our guest to make a valid workflow, so we (I am rooting for Alfresco too)
can present the change to people .

[libreoffice-documentation] To Helmar:

2011-02-26 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
Hello Helmar,

If you are the same Helmar that is getting involved in the Translation to
Brazilian Portuguese, this message is for you ;)

We are already translating the documents, please ask for help in the list
bro-tradu...@listas.broffice.org (get registered at
https://listas.broffice.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/bro-traducao)

The translations WILL NOT BE STORED in Alfresco for now, we are waiting a
bit, but they will probably be done in ODFAuthors (it is my wish to transfer
them to Alfresco too, but the Community hasn't accepted it yet)

Thanks

So ...

I am back ...

The brazilian community in the past weeks has worked and continues to work
to twart what we consider to be abusive leadership, but that is another
matter.

What is a big deal is that we are starting to reorganize ourselves and seems
that it is my role to be Coordinator of the Documentation Project for pt-br.

Big Wow ... who would guess.

So I am requesting some help to get access to moderate our mailing list

moderates it.

Will be posting some exciting news in our front in the next few days.

[libreoffice-documentation] New Installation Instructions for Linux - Chapter Formated

2011-02-14 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
So an update,

I have just uploaded to Alfresco the new re-formatted (following the
Chapters template) "Installation Guide for Linux" as an .odt called "
Install-Linux-guide-formatted.odt "

It is in the en > Various folder.

Needs o be put into the workflow.

On a more personal note:
We are experiencing here in Brasil a crisis of sorts, the NGO BrOffice.org
and the community are not seeing eye to eye.
Until we define the future of our focus, and until we decide where to go
from here, I will be halting my contributions, and leaving this mailing
list.

Wish you all the best, but this is the time for some in-house cleaning up,
so ... hope to see you all soon :)

It has been a privilege to work with all of you.

Rogerio

PS: from now on please send e-mails to my personal account if the need
arises.

John ... I guess if you are already doing this, so you could start it the

How about that?

Exactly the same here ... go for it Jean ... if you are willing do please
try to write it in english, we can give it a uplift if you can send our way
even a bad translation (because I will put your french version through a

besides you underestimate your english, it is quite good for tech writing.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base documentation

2011-01-26 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
I second the BASE - TUTORIAL

If the existing documentation is THAT scarse (bad?) the Tutorial is
something a experienced Base user could cover quickly and would be the
starting point of the future GUIDE.

But alas, count me out of this enterprise, I don't even know how to start
the Base program, so ... my opinion should be taken from this rather
(ignorant) perspective.

Of course I could step in if someone needs a a proof reader or/and a mouse
rat for this thing ;)

Did another update to the wiki install for Linuxes.

Just added the help-pack to the general instructions, just below the
download site ...

Rogerio

PS: These next few days will migrate this to Alfresco for convenience ...
and to test the darn thing with a live baby ... let's see how you gringos
handle changing THIS diaper :)

Take it easy Barb ... we are all learning this stuff ... we'll get the hang
of it ...

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Alfresco: site domain name news

2011-01-22 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
If we could contact Olivier Hallot at the SC - BrOffice subsector - and ask
him if he wants to try migrating the Documentation Pt-Br workflow to
Alfresco, we may get more support for your efforts, please try to contact
him directly ...

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Open Communication in OpenSource?

2011-01-21 Thread Rogerio Luz Coelho
I agree, for future reference, a mailing list is the best choice (even more
because it is the way people are used to search for old messages). I believe
even for our needs it is better since ideas can be thrown around without the
need for people to get access to Alfresco per se.
