Re: [Drakelist] Drake FA-7 (fan)

2015-06-21 Thread W4AWM

Hi Bill,

Most any 110V fan that fits the hole pattern will work. Most are a bit
faster and noisier than the FA-7 fan but I used to work with broadcast
transmitters so fan nose never bothered me. There are 12V fans available that
also fit the hole pattern but they don't seem to move as much air as the line
voltage units. Whatever fan you install, it should be mounted so that it
blows out from the power supply. Also, the regular fans can be had at
hamfests for around $5.00, sometimes even less. You will usually pay big
bucks
for an FA-7.

Solid state rigs, especially those from Asia is difficult if not impossible to
fix when it breaks. You will nearly always be able to find parts for tube
rigs. Keep the TR-4C as a spare if nothing else.

Subject: [Drakelist] Drake TR-4C rig for sale.

Members:

In order for me to enter the solid-state ham radio world I need to sell some of
my coveted Drake equipment to folk who appreciates vintage Drake quality and
its history.

For sale is a Drake TR-4C transceiver, serial #36799 (with full set of 10-meter
crystals), accompanying AC-4 power supply, MS-4 speaker, and Drake 729SR
microphone. No noise blanker installed.

I purchase all three units in 2008 from Ron Baker (WB4HFN). Ron fully
re-furbished the TR-4C and re-painted its case. All units are currently in
“excellent” condition (cosmetically and functioning), and were always dust
covered and pampered in my non-smoker household. Far less than normal usage of
the rig has been made since its purchase. 95% listening, 5% short duration
transmitting. No tinkering, alterations nor tube replacements have been made
by me.

Asking price for all three units is: $500

Shipping charges extra. Must be shipped in two separate packages. Carrier of
your choice.

Thank you.

Re: [Drakelist] L4B

2013-09-18 Thread W4AWM
Hi Tim,

Replacing the blower on the L-4B is not brain surgery. It is easy to do
yourself. Be sure the caps in the PS are discharged by leaving the rig off
for 15 minutes or so. Disconnect the power supply from the power source.
Disconnect all the connectors on the rear panel and take the cover off. There
is no danger of shock since the power supply is disconnected and there are
no caps in the RF deck which will hold a charge. You will see how easy it
is. Rather replace the blower yourself than risk shipping the deck. You may
be able to fix the original blower once you have it removed from the deck.
Should you decide to ship it, do remove the tubes and chimneys and keep
them at home. Never ship the deck with those items in place. Doing so
invites disaster.

have a spare MS-4 case but prefer the original C-4 case.

Found what for all practical purposes is a brand new C-4 with the antenna

to have it double boxed. He took it to UPA and there must have been a
misunderstanding. They did not double box it but shipped it in his packing.
Didn't make it!!! The case was split in one corner, a pop weld broken on a
seam and several outward bulged in the top pf the case. I haven't checked
the electronics but it looks OK so I'm hopeful on that part.

To be on the safe side, bond the amplifier chassis and the PS chassis
together with a suitable length of shield from a piece of coax or similar

It certainly makes a big difference with the Hallicrafters SR-2000

Re: [Drakelist] Saga of L7 fan resolved?

2012-01-13 Thread W4AWM
I don't know about y'all but I have worked around broadcast transmitters
for a good part of my life. Blower noise is not that big a deal to me. Not
hearing that blower noise is something to worry about big time! My computer
has 5 blowers in it and it is just a plain Jane box, not a gaming rig.
Sounds like an idling jet, but I noticed a difference one morning and opened
the box to find that my OEM processor fan had frozen. That saved me over a
hundred bucks for a new one. I know when a fan quits. Same thing for my ham
gear. I want to know that those blowers are running without having to resort
to temperature or air flow alarms, etc. Coping with a bit of noise is a
cheap price to pay versus the cost of a new final.

Don't be cheap when buying blowers. Get one that has ball bearings. It
will last a lot longer. There is usually a label on the fan that states of it
has ball bearings. If the label does not so state, it is a sleeve bearing
model and they don't live long.

I have a ball bearing muffin blower that has been running for nearly 20
years in a make shift arrangement to pump radon gas out of my sealed sump. It
runs in an area of high humidity and is still going strong. If it died
tonight, It wouldn't owe me a thing.

Re: [Drakelist] Digital Readout for TR-3 and TR-4

2012-01-08 Thread W4AWM
Many potentiometers having a switch on the back are common in that the
switch will fit several different controls. I have found many of these on NOS
and used pots at hamfests and I always buy several, especially new ones. It
is nice to get several since they are prone to getting lost in the junque
pile at home. The purpose of this is to remind you that if your switch dies,
there is still hope. Not so the L-4B and L-7 switches although I have
heard of some fellows who were able to repair them.

Garey's power strip idea is an excellent way to take the load off the
equipment mounted switch but I am a bit of a nut then it comes to turning on a
piece of great with the internal switch. Yes, matching and replacing the
switch can be a real exercise in patience since many times, the entire control
has to be removed to replace the switch on the back. If you don't mind
scrounging and a bit of work, you can keep your gear original, at least when
it comes to powering it up. By the way, Garey's idea is a great way to make
sure all the gear connected to it is off and in a storm, pulling that
single strip plug and disconnecting antennas may save you from electrical
storm
damage.

This goes for other makes of boatanchors also.

[Drakelist] First Rigs - If you could do it all over again, what would yo...

2011-06-18 Thread W4AWM

I was first licensed in 1953 at the age of 13. My first rig was a home
brew pair of 6L6s in PP mode. Built on 2 steel chassis made up od heat duct
material by a local heating company. The local radio supplier was out of 8
X 12 X 3 inch chassis and I couldn't wait. As stated, there were 2
chassis, one mounted atop the other, separates by Erector Set angle brackets.
If
anyone has any parts of that set which is easily identifiable by the
chassis, I'd pay well to get them back. They were sold at a Shelby Hamfest in
the
early 1960s. I currently have the parts to reproduce that rig, including
the NOD power tranny and choke. All I need is the time. I only had 2 rocks,
3700 and 3535. The 3700 must have had a positive temperature coefficient
or I was just lucky because I never got cited for off frequency operation.
Across the street lived Retired Army Colonel Stanley, Saulnier, W4VG, who I
was sure had a red phone connection directly to the FCC. Needless to sat,
evert time I touched the key, it got logged. He was not friendly to young
hams, that is, until I enlisted in the Air Force. His attitute suddenly
turned very positive.

I used an S-77 receiver and a Windom antenna.

Later upgraded to a Viking II and VFO which I built from the kit. The
receiver was upgraded to an S-76 purloined from my OM who was using it for
SWLing. The Viking II kit was a neat story, The local radio supply store owner
opened the store on a Sunday just to sell me the kit. I had borrowed the
money from my Grandmother who also helped me learn code. Those sure were the
good old days! My main Elmer was Cash Gregg, W4DPF with Rudy Gibbs, W4HX and

2011-04-13 Thread W4AWM

Hi Ed,

I am no expert in this but the PS adjustment could be the problem. Also,
I have found that low input line voltage can cause the same problem. This
I discovered on field day when I was at the end of a long power cable. All
was fine until I started tuning up with the antenna tuner. As I
approached max power, the rig would shut down and I had to turn it off and
then back
on to "re-boot" . After I discovered that the line voltage was dropping
to 105V under maximum load and ran a separate, heavier and dedicated power
cable from the generator, the problem was totally eliminated.

I'm sure you will hear from Garey shortly who is the consummate expert in

of the plate coil. This is not on the ceramic as far as I can tell and is
not one of the rivets holding the ceramic. It seems to disappear a split
second before the arc is heard on the sound track. I don't have the cover off
my L-7 so I can't duplicate what I am seeing bit that might be a clue to
the problem.

Re: [Drakelist] C4 Clock Question

2010-03-25 Thread W4AWM
I have had very good luck lubeing stuck and sluggish gear boxes by the
following method:

Select a drill bit that is just the outside diameter size of a WD-40 spray
"straw." Put on goggles, hold the assembly upside down and very carefully
and slowly drill a hole in the top of the gear box. DO NOT DRILL the brass
motor housing cover. Insert the straw and give it a few good squirts of WD
or 5-56 lube. It is not necessary to plug the hole.

You are drilling upside down to help prevent shavings from entering the
gear box and slowly so that you do not penetrate into the housing and
contacting the gears.

A hint for setting the clock: Many folks attempt to remove the bezel by
prying it from the outside. Regardless of how careful one is, the panel will
ultimately become scratched. A safer way is to carefully insert a small
screwdriver between the plastic window and the metal bezel and pull straight
toward you and away from the panel. Hook your index finger around the screw
driver shaft and use your thumb against the panel for leverage. Pull
slowly. I have used this method for years and have yet to scratch my panel.

Re: [Drakelist] Need (lots of) help in getting a L4B to function

2009-12-15 Thread W4AWM
Hi Karl,

It has been awhile since I have done anything with my L-4B, but as I
recall, the VOX line needs to be grounded for the relay to pull in. If you are
running a T$-7 or most of the Drake 4 lines, this is easy to do. Otherwise,
simply ground the center conductor of the RCA VOX jack on the back of the
amp. That should cause the relay to close. You will have to release that
ground if you are using the same antenna for receive as for transmit. It is
not
really necessary to connect the AGC line. Your manual should tell you
about these connections.

The going price for an L-4B supply is around $450.00 for one in reasonably
good, unmodified and clean condition. Add more for one that has been
recapped. One question to ask is what condition the HV connector is in. They
are getting hard do find. Also, the HV cable, which appears to be the
insulation and inner conductor from RG-8 or RG-11 coax should be in good
condition

Re: [Drakelist] L7 PS Winter Project

2009-10-01 Thread W4AWM

Hi Brian,

As far as I know, Heath and Harbach boards are the same. Be careful with
hardware and make sure that there is enough space between surrounding
components to prevent arc over. Be sure and change the resistor in the bias
circuit. Can't lay my hands on my instructions right now, but as I recall,
that
is covered.

I also can't get to my PS-4 and 7 so I can't tell you about the screws.

If the RF deck has the original power/mode switch, I suggest you install
relays and switch the coils with the switches instead of the load. This is
easy to do and there is plenty or room under the chassis to do it. You might
also consider a soft start circuit at the same time. Both these mods are
easy and completely removable with no holes.

When you are setting things up, be sure that the input AC is correct for
the input voltage. There is a terminal strip in the deck and one in the PS
that makes this easy to do. Both must be set up for the same input AC voltage
you are using. I suggest a heavy ground lead between the deck and PS. Do
not rely on the internal power cable to handle this. Of course, the whole
works should be properly grounded.

Note that if you are running it on 240 and plan new wiring from the breaker
box to handle it, you will need to run 4 wire cable, that is 2 hot, one
neutral and one ground. This is a recent change in the NEC. If you presently
have a 220 circuit to the shack you are grandfathered. This only applied to
new work.

I can tell you from many field day experiences that low primary input
voltage to the PS-7 will cause the TR-7 to turn itself off, especially with
voice
peaks or when tuning up. Turning the power switch off and back on will reset
it, but it will do it again until the primary input voltage to the PS-7 is at
factory specs. Being at the end of a long power cable will cause the problem.

Do you recall the grand old days of movie serials when they had mics plugged
into the headphone jacks of SX-42s and similar receivers. They could work MARS
(the planet) anytime they wanted with no QRM, QSB or TVI! They could even
work mobile rigs in cars that only had a microphone and 96" whip, but no
control
head or radio in sight. Sometimes, they forgot to use an antenna. Must have
been one of those early mobiles where the antenna was under the running board.
I'll bet they got reports of dirty signals!

Re: [Drakelist] Cable for L-4B

In a message dated 8/13/2008 4:30:38 PM Pacific Daylight Time,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

The amp is use less with out this cable

Far from it. All you need to do is make up a simple 2 conductor cable with
virtually any size wire. The pins can come from old crystals or tube bases.
Several years ago, Radio shack had some twin lead connectors with identical
spacing. Drake came out with a conversion kit for the AC-4 PS which was simply
an
RCC jack on a piece of metal which replaced the original 2 pin connector.

When wiring it up, you can use a VOM to determine polarity. One side of each
connector is a hard ground. The other lead is "hot."

It is not necessary to use the AGC circuitry and many folks do not. Follow
the AGC instructions in the L-4B manual.

Don't make the mistake that many do and try to drive the pants off the amp.
You will shorten the tube life and the signal on the other end will not differ
significantly with a few hundred watts less power from your end. Those bottles
are getting expensive and used properly, will last for many years.

I suggest that you investigate installing a soft start circuit in the amp.
There are a number of versions available, some being a simple series plug in
the
AC line. Also, when you first fire up the amp if it has been sitting a long
time, let the bottles cook at least 30 minutes or so before you hit them with
HV.

The L-4B is a great little amp. Have fun with it.

Works great and not pulling anywhere near capacity if used as above.

I would think 20A would be fine unless the run is long, then I'd opt for 30A.?
Be aware that pin arrangements for the plug and socket change for the various
ratings.

Even if the PS is working ok with the amp, I always replace the 5K 7wt resistor
on the underside of the supply with a 5K equivalent, 20 watt rating.? When the
original resistor fails, it takes out the ALC pot that also contains the
standby switch; these haven't been available for decades.

Re: [drakelist] TR switch?

2008-06-23 Thread W4AWM
Hi Nick,

The T4X-C transmitter has a T/R relay built in. If you get all the jumper
cables with it, it is an easy hookup. Aftermarket cables are available or easy
to
home brew.

A T/R switch is an electronic device which provides the same function as a
relay, but if you are using the drake C line twins, you will not need one. As I
recall, there were 3 manufacturers of these electronic T/R switches, Johnson,
B&W and DowKey. The first two were nearly identical and had built in power
supplies. DowKey had two versions, one with the built in supply and the other
which was normally powered by the transmitter accessory socket. Most folks
preferred to use the mechanical relay if required for their nparticular setup,
but
it was not a good choice for break-in CW. Also, back in the early days, the
electronic switches tended to cause some TVI.

Good luck with the C Line. You will love it. Follow the instructions for
tuning up. The sweep tubes used in the final cannot take a lot of extreme heat
caused by long tune up periods. A muffin fan set up to suck hot air out of the
final cage is a definate asset to longer tube life.Don't run the pants off of
it, either. A few less wats will make no difference on the other end.

The goodies arrived this afternoon in great shape. The blower was fine, too.
By the way, it wasn't really necessary to send the $5.00 back, but I
appreciate it anyway.

I was surprised to find that Drake apparently switched to RG-59 interior for
the HV. On both of mine it is RG-8. Surprisingly, Hallicrafters uses test lead
wire for the SR-2000 PS which runs about the same HV. I don't really trust
that.

Have a great weekend. I hope to spend it getting all by mail answered and

Right you are, Thom. It is the squeaking wheel that gets the oil.

Then there are the nice guys. I bid on and won a receiver and paid for it
and shipping via PayPal. It never arrived and three direct emails to the
seller theough eBay plus two through PayPal got no answer. I filed a claim
and
PayPal paid me back in full within 2 weeks.

The very next day, there was the same receiver, pictures and description on
eBay for the same starting bid. I fired off a not too nice email to the seller
through eBay. He replied that somehow my bid had slopped through the cracks
and he was very sorry. He pulled the item off and sold it to me for $10.00 less
than my original bid, plus he paid the shipping. It was one of those walk in
eBay stores so I can see where things could have been overlooked. In this case,
it appeared to be an honest mistake and they made good. That does not explain
the lack of return replies to my emails, but since I got my item, I did not
pursue it any further, but I did not leave any feedback.

Re: [drakelist] 4 line blue filters

2007-11-07 Thread W4AWM
Hi Carey,

Please don't feel bad, you asked a perfectly reasonable question and found
the answer. There was really no way to enter a question like that into a search
engine until you at least had a manufacturers name or model number. That you
got and that is why we are all here, to help eachother. If you did not happen
to know about the Drake site, you could not be expected to be able to find out
anything, either. The last time I tried to find the Drake site on Google, the
link did not work, so you can see there are problems. In any rate, welcome to
the reflector and to the world of Drake collecting.

My little tirade was about the folks who know what they want and in many
cases have the above information. Then they get onto the reflectors looking for
someone to look it up for them, or maybe even send them the tube, connector or
other part from their junk box at no cost. Rarely do you see someone offer up
front to pay for the item. Maybe they would offer to pay after someone offers
them the item, but it is not that evident at the outset. I used to send out
connectors, hardware and other stuff just to help out. Now with increased
postage rates and limited time to find suitable packing, box it up and take it
to
the post office or shipping company, I can no longer do that gratis. Good guy
or
not, it is just not worth the hassle unless a fair price is paid and the
postage covered.

I do have an extensive library of manuals, catalogs and reference books and I
am glad to look up things for folks. A goodly number of manuals are now
available free or at reasonable cost for a quality reprint. Therefore, I will
no
longer take the time to go to Kinkos or other copy place to reproduce a manual
for free. The only time I would even offer is if it happened to be a rare
manual what I was sure was not available anywhere else. Also, there is the
copyright law bit and I have been challenged about that several times by
overzealous
clerks at the copy stores. Although most of these materials are very old and
the companies are in many cases defunct, nobody knows if someone out there
still
holds a copyright. For instance, in the case of Hallicrafters, the name is
owned by an electronics company and Drake is still in business although neither
is in the ham gear market at this point.

mention of a minimum orderunless I somehow missed it.? Even then, I would
gladly pay $15.00 for a sheet of filter if I needed it.? I am sure there are
other goodies on that site that one could order to make up the $15.00 minimum

??? Dick,

?

??? Those holders had a tendency to crumble after years of using with the PBT,
RIT, etc. lamps on.? Drake made a replacement for this out of much stouter
material.? But neither are available.? My best suggestion would be to find a
TR-7 being parted out.

[drakelist] FALL RADIO MEET AND VINTAGE HAMFEST - DAVIDSONVILLE, MD

2007-10-21 Thread W4AWM
Thise who missed this one really missed a great gathering. The WX was
absolutely perfect, All the flea market spaces were full and the auction went
on for
way over three hours. The food could be custom ordered and was delivered on
time, or you could purchase pizza by the slice as long as it lasted. Soft
drinks and water were abailable all day. Rest rooms (at least the men's) were
clea,
there was plenty of hot water, TP and towels.

Spotted in the flea market was a pair of SX-28s, an SX-111, a National 77
special, an NC-300, Hammarlund Super Pro with PS, PE-103 with base, DM-1000,
and
several other pieces of surplus gear. Lots of tubes, small parts and paper.
The rest was mainly antique and more recent tabletop and console radios, lots
of test equipment, etc. Prices for the most part were sownright reasonable.

The auction was awsome. There was almost more stuff than were was room for
people. Amont the items auctioned in addition to console and table top radios
and phonographs were lots of surplus gear, pre recorded audio and video tapes,
records, scopes. meters, including a Simpson 260 with box and probes, sighnal
generators, tube testers, wlaborate junque boxes, large quantities of receiving
and transmitting tubes including many 811s, 833s, 1625s, 807s 829s, 832s, MV
rectifiers including 866s and 872s and much more. Unfortunately, the few
audiofools present drove the prices of 6L6s, KT-66s, 5881s, 6V6s and other
audio
types way out of range of the average attendee. Also auctioned off were an
unbuilt Heathkit DX-60, Color TV set and a home controller kit. There were
several
transmitters including an Ameco. There was some kind of commercial Collins
transceiver which went for big bux.

All in all, it was tremendous and as far as I know, everyone went away happy.

Re: [drakelist] Tuning Knobs

2007-10-19 Thread W4AWM
Drake antenna control boxes, the C-4, the RCS-4 and CS-7, used the same motor
driven switch. I have found the RCS-4s at hamfests for extremely reasonable
prices.
Don't forget to look under the hamfest tables. I found 2 of mine there in
junque boxes.

Re: [drakelist] New bill in Oklahoma

2007-09-05 Thread W4AWM
Hi All,

There is something built into the fine print of most HOAs called a Special
Assessment Fee. It can be brought into effect when the HOA suddenly needs
additional funds that the treasury will not cover. If they get enough votes for
the
assessment, everyone in the association has to put up the payment, even if
they are not in favor of what the money is going for. Also, many HOAs have
legal funds set aside for various things that might require the advice of an
attorney.

I don't believe the fat kady has begun her aria on this one.

Re: [drakelist] R7A

2007-08-25 Thread W4AWM
Hi Bill,

The R-7A usually sells for between $650.00 and 800.00 US here in the United
States. Price is dictated by number and types of filters, physical condition
and if the receiver is working or not. Most of the units I have seen were in
very good shape.

Re: [drakelist] Tr 7

2007-08-19 Thread W4AWM
I would think solid copper wire would work, but my favorite for grounding is
braid. I usually get mine from RG-8 or RG-11 coax but there is no reason why
braid from RG-58, 59 or coax similar would not work. I just happen to have a
lot of old coax laying around that I don't care to rely on for RF use.

Re: [drakelist] Tr 7

2007-08-19 Thread W4AWM
I have run into this problem several times and have found that bonding the
PS-7 to the TR-7 with a separate piece of braid pretty well solved the problem.
I am not sure why, since the negative power lead is pretty heavy, but the
added braid did the trick.

For any SR-2000 owners who might be reading this, the same bonding will
increase the power output of the rig by a noticable amount.

Re: [drakelist] Wanted DRAKE L4B or L7 Power Supply

2007-07-08 Thread W4AWM
How can they possibly loose something that heavy? But, that's UPS for you.
I wouldn't ship a brick with that outfit!

Ron, WA2CQM had an L-4b Power supply for sale last night. It is essentially
identical to the L-7 PS except got the lettering on the end that says L-4B.
You can contact him at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have no experience in dealing with him, nor do I have any financial or
other interest in his offering.

Re: [drakelist] RF feedback with SP75/TR7 (Field Day gremlin)

2007-06-25 Thread W4AWM
Hi Jim,

The rig and any tuner or other thing associated with it should be grounded at
the rig location. Even if the generator is grounded (it was, I hope) you
should still have a good ground at the rig. I used my SP-75 this year and for
the
last 4 and had no problems.

The one problem I did have was on several bands, the rig (TR-7) would shut
down when I was tuning up near full power. I discovered last year that the
problem appeared to be that when the rig was fully loaded, the line voltage
would
drop to 115V and the rig doesn't like that very much. At the end of a 50' piece
of #12 there is about a 10 volt drop from the generator. Jacking up the
output at the generator brought the loaded line voltage at the rig to 122V and
it
likes that fine, but the clocks go crazy! This being a WW II generator, 60~
is concurrent with 115V output. When you speed it up for higher voltage, the
frequency goes up with the generator speed and the "hysterical stinkronus"
clock motors like their 60~ input.

Ah, the pleasures of field day!

Re: [drakelist] PS7 shutting down

2007-06-11 Thread W4AWM
Hi Again Bill,

If it is as low as 115V and the voltage selector switch is set at 120V, you
will definately have a problem. There is also a HI/LO selector switch on the
panel next to the voltage switch, but I am not familiar with the operation of
this function and would hesitate to advise you wo play with it, especially with
the rig connected. I might suggest that you check with John Kriner or Jeff
Covelli who may be able to shed more light on the switch function.

I first discovered this problem several years ago on field day. The rig was
acting as you stated when I tried to tune up and I changed rigs with the same
PS and still had the problem. I then went through my other 3 PS-7s with the
same trouble. Now here is when the red face part comes in. A CBer with some
interest in getting a ham ticket had been watching the commotion and casually
mentioned that maybe the line voltage was low. I wandered over to the generator
which was indicating 120V on the output meter. I had operated this rig at field
day many times before and had no problem and it was working when I pulled it
off the desk. What I didn't take into consideration was that this year, I had
loaned one of my heavy line cords to someone and was running the entire FD
table on one fifty foot #12/3 cable instead of the normal 2 that I usually
used. I
checked the voltage at the table and sure enough, it was 115V! I then jacked
up the generator so it was putting out 127V which gave me 122V at the table.
The clocks didn't like it much, but all else was fine and the
TR-7 was happily perking away at full power.

A lesson learned. Murphy and Mr. Ohm strike again!

John, W4AWM
