Re: [Dx4win] import
I'm not familiar with Writelog, but generally speaking if you export your contest log in ADIF format you should have no difficulty importing it into DX4WIN. You'd just do a regular import and it should work. (Unfortunately, I'm not in front of my shack computer and don't have a copy of D4W handy to give you the specific steps.) If that's what you're doing and it's not working, if you can tell us what the problem is (do you get an error message?) we should be able to help. Re: [Dx4win] CW speed opening WPM annoying
My system remembers the last value that it was set to and always opens up at that speed. Come to think of it, I normally just have the keyboard open (it doesn't take up much space on the screen) but I just did a quick test and closed the window, then re-opened. When I did, it opened at the same speed (not 55WPM) as when I closed it. Have you tried changing the speed, closing the window (or shutting down DX4WIN completely) then reopening? Re: [Dx4win] Importing ADIF files from N3FJP
According to the ADIF spec (http://www.adif.org/adif227.htm#Mode%20Enumeration ) PH is not a valid mode, it should have been SSB. I'm at work and don't have D4W on this machine and I don't remember if there's a bulk QSO operation to change mode. If not, using a text editor you can replace the PH mode with SSB and that should do the trick. (Hopefully you didn't save the log with the bad imports, but if you did, you can allow them to replace the others.) If you're not familiar with editing an ADIF file, you need to use something like Notepad (don't use MS Word). Look for something that looks like this: MODE:2PH and have the editor replace all instances with MODE:3SSB Then you should be able to import without any problems. Re: [Dx4win] Creating New Log from Existing Log
Hi Fred, I think I can walk you through doing this, though I'm at work now and don't have the software in front of me. There are two things you might want to consider: The first option would be to start adding your new contacts into a separate group within the same log. By doing this, all your DXCC info will be the same (no need to re-work anyone unless you wanted to) and you can use the group selections to select just the contacts from your new location. The other way to actually create a lot would be to filter on the dates, export just that portion of your log in DX4WIN format, then create a new log and import that exported data. 73, David, K2DBK On 9/27/2010 11:11 PM, cw...@juno.com wrote: I've been through the help file and could not find the answer to my question: How do I create a new log beginning 01/01/2009 from my existing log? Re: [Dx4win] Bad QSO's
In the main QSO window, when fully expanded (you may need to press F5 a few times to see it) there are drop-down status boxes for Mixed, Band, and Mode status for various awards, such as DXCC, WAS, WAX, VUCC, etc. You can select the I (Invalid) option for any one or more of these. The advantage of this granular approach is that it allows you to mark a particular QSO as being valid for some awards not others. For instance, I have a QSO on 6m with a country that I worked from a friend's QTH that's valid for DXCC (since he's in the US, as I am) but not for VUCC because I wasn't within the distance limitations for that award. 73, David, K2DBK On 8/2/2010 4:33 PM, Garry Shapiro wrote: As I recall, earlier versions of DX4WIN had a box in the QSO window for denoting bad QSO's--i.e. not in the other guy's log, not a ham callsign (viz. Mel, I did a ton of testing off-list with Guy, Paul, and Jim and reported pretty much all of the info that you've mentioned, as well as doing low-level traces showing the actual calls to the OS to manipulate the status of the control lines.. As Guy said, the tough part is that neither Guy nor Paul can reproduce the issue which makes it difficult to troubleshoot. [Dx4win] CW keying issue? Anyone?
So has anyone else got any thoughts about the issue with CW keying locking up in version 8.03? As I posted to this list, I've tried literally every combination of using CW Keying PTT on both DTR and RTS with no luck. I've tried a completely clean install on the same computer with the same issue. (Specifically, sending any CW results is the rig going into xmit and staying there, until I either exit D4W or go into CW setup and select then de-select Tune). The only test that I haven't done yet will be to move to a different COM port. (The problem is that if that works, I need to reconfigure all the other software that I use.) This works perfectly using version 8.02 (and prior) using the exact same hardware configuration. I've verified the the keying setup continues to work with programs that it worked with before I went to 8.03, and even added a couple of new programs recently just as a test which all work fine. (DTR on COM3 to be used for CW keying. I normally don't use PTT at all since I run QSK, but it doesn't seem to matter whether I have PTT configured or not.) I'm temporarily using CWType (a 3rd party program) to send CW from the keyboard, but I'd really like to have the functionality back. I know that I'm not the only one complaining, and I do know this can be a busy time of the year to get around to things, so I am just trying to remind the folks out there that I'd really like to get this working again. I am more than happy to try test/debugging builds, whatever it takes. (And I'm trying to get my fist so that this would be a lot less of an issue, but it's just slow going folks!) Re: [Dx4win] Wish list
Hi Dick, I haven't been involved in software for quite as long as you (only since the mid-70s ... I'm a youngster), but I had a saying that I used to use along those same lines: Fast, cheap, good: Pick two. Of course, in a situation like this, with a single developer it's tough to apply the fast attribute, though I suppose if Paul wanted to, he could spend a fortune, hire a fleet of programmers, and then have to pass the entire cost on to us, something that probably isn't practical. Personally, while there are a few features I'd like to see, I'd prefer to see it get done right, rather than simply fast. What I do think is great is the increase in communication from Paul, so that we know that he's listening to what folks are asking for. While I wouldn't mind getting a sneak peak at what kinds of things are in store for the next version (be it version 8, 7.3, or whatever), I also realize that it's Paul's decision and he's going to do what's best for his business. Re: [Dx4win] LOTW
Hi John, I didn't see anyone else reply, so: 1) Press F8 to get to the QSO search screen 2) In the Date field, enter 06/01/2008. When you leave that field, depending on how you have date searches set, you should be prompted for an end date as well. Set that to the date of the last QSO to upload, or even some date in the future if you want them all updated. 3) From the Label menu, select Set Upload Flags. You should get a dialog box asking if you want to set the flags, just click yes and you'll be all set. My 2 cents is that the set/clear upload (and other) flags probably would be a bit less confusing if they were in the same place as all the other Multiple QSO operations (under QSO), but this is how it works for now. Good luck. W9RPM wrote: Hi, I need to re-upload some of my log because of some problems from LOTW. I have to go back until June 1. I am having a brain drain here. Re: [Dx4win] LOTW
I should note that in my explanation I left out the step to clear the upload dates. This is important, because the LoTW export function will not work if the date is set. Jim's version is correct. [Dx4win] Lost QSO's
My 2 cents is that an overall better solution is to keep your computer on a small interruptible power supply (UPS). You don't need one that will last that long (5 or 10 minutes is fine), and there are plenty of small ones available from companies like APC (www.apc.com), Belkin (www.belkin.com) and Ultra (www.ultraproducts.com) for well under $100. (I personally have at least one from each of those companies at home, with a somewhat larger Ultra that powers a couple of computers, most of my network gear, and a few other things.) The advantage of this is that in the event of a power outage, you will not only have the time to save the QSO, but you can also shut your computer down in an orderly fashion. Many of these products will connect to your computer and will shut it down after a specified set of conditions are met (e.g., backup battery has been running and has 'x'% power left, etc.), meaning that even if you're not there, your computer will still shut down properly. Even with a system that writes to disk upon save, there is still a small window where a QSO could be lost, although I can understand the frustration at loosing any data for any reason. As for your specific suggestion, there are utility programs that will make a key sequence to any arbitrarily complex set of other key sequences (and some will get a lot more complicated, simulating mouse movement and mouse button clicks), though personally I don't use them so I can't give a recommendation. W5LT wrote: I am not a computer wizard, but is it possible to program an unused function key (say F12) to execute: enter alt s sequence ?? That way you could enter QSO (from a spot) and write to disk with one button. That would be a neat solution. Just a thought. Bob, W5LT -- 73, David, K2DBK http://k2dbk.com http://k2dbk.blogspot.com
[Dx4win] Export to Excel format
Welcome back Paul. You guys did a terrific job! The way I've exported my log in the past is to select the Logbook window, then right-click and select write to file. You can select different Logbook reports and customize which fields you want to export. The file will be written as a CSV file, which Excel will read in easily. I hope this helps.
