[Dx4win] CW with Windows xP with version 5.03

2003-05-04 Thread Mel Martin (VE2DC)
You can just copy the driver No need to re-install... File
attached... Instructions below...

The file I attached is the one distributed with 6.02... But I'm pretty
sure it works with all versions... No harm in trying... Don't forget to
delete or more/rename vich11.vxd, the 95/98 driver...

FAQ: I get an error that the port driver cannot be found

This error indicates that the port driver, the program that 'talks' to
the LPT port, is missing.

This typically happens when you copy all the DX4WIN files to a new
computer without installing the port driver. You can correct this
problem by copying the port driver to the correct directory.

There are two port drivers: one for Win/NT, Win/2000 and Win/XP, the
second one for Win/95, Win/98, Win/SE etc. When the correct driver is
not available, you can still retrieve the driver from the DX4WIN
installation program. You can retrieve individual files from the
installation program dx4w602.exe. Add the /X parameter on a DOS command
prompt, or create a link to the install program and add this parameter.

See Appendix Files: portdriver for the name of the driver.

Hi Roger,

You have to reinstal DX4WIN because the CW driver needs to be installed
in WINXP/system etc

After that you can copy your complete backup back to the same directory

 Hi,

 I have just upgraded a computer from Win98SE to xP with the idea of
 then going up to version 6. BUT  I now get the message;

 Cannot open CW Driver.

 As a backup I copied the complete directory from the Radio Computer to

 the Office machine. The CW Keyer works fine from this second machine
 running
on
 Windows ME.

 The same thing has happened to my laptop with the upgrade from 98 to
 xP.

 HELP!

 Thank you and 73

[Dx4win] Error creating new selection names

2003-04-19 Thread Mel Martin (VE2DC)
I noticed something similar creating a new Radio entry...

I created a new entry starting with a character never used... ( i.e.

Subject: [Dx4win] Error creating new selection names

A while back I reported a problem with creating new filter selection
names.  Here's the scenario:

Filter - Selection.

Click on Add, and the top box now says Replace this Name -- so you
start
typing in that box.

Here's the problem:

If the first letter you type matches an *existing* selection, you are
now
editing *THAT* selection, and not the new one you created!

For example, I have a selection called 2000 IARU. Say I want to add a

date selection for calendar year 2000. I start typing 2000 in the top

box, and now all of a sudden, the dates and check boxes get filled in as
if
I'm editing the 2000 IARU selection, which I am! If you save this
selection, you will have over-written the old one.

I found a work-around, which I don't recommend (it involves editing your

.DXL file). Give the new selection some weird name like XYZZY -- it
must
be at least one character LONGER than the name you really want. Then
save
it. Exit DX4WIN and edit your call.DXL file using an editor like
Emacs. Search for the weird name XYZZY and change it to what you want
(in
the .DXL file, it said XYZZYce this name, so I changed this to
2000Yce
this name). In my case, since 2000 was shorter than XYZZY, I went
back into the selection editor and carefully deleted just the last
character from 2000Y to get 2000 clicked Update than OK.

Paul, I hope you understand this problem and can come up with a fix in
the
next revision.

This should not be happening as I have made no log changes and it's

this a bug.

If it has been a while since I connected to a cluster I have no way of

knowing if I made a change or not - which makes me very nervous about
doing a Save.

I notice if I actually to an Exit then DX4Win closes without the Save

and the appearance of the Modified flag is spurious.

I absolutely _depend_ on the Modified flag in the Main window to tell
me whether the log has changed so I can make the judgement to Save or
not.  This should be fixed.

[Dx4win] PSK31 config change in DX4WIN 6.02?

That doesn't work either, Mel. The PTT relay in the RigBlaster then keys
with every dit and dah or the radio PTT keys with every dit and dah in
the CW mode. It would likely work if you were to disconnect and
re-connect the PTT line for PSK31 but why not just allow the individual
software control for individual selection of ports for CW and PSK31 PTT
as it was in Ver 5.02/03 That wasn't broke and didn't need fixing! Now
its broke! -=Rog-K9RB=-

 Hi Larry... You CAN use the LPT port to key both CW and PSK31/CW
 PTT... I would think this would only be a problem if you are using a
 different radio for PSK31... So work-around 1 should work... Obviously

 workaround 2 won't unless you define a 2nd COM PTT interface for mmty
 and hook them up in parallel...

 In DX4WIN 5.x, the PSK SettingsTx screen allowed you to select the

 PSK keying com port from 1-8, and either RTS or DTR as the keyed
 line. The 5.x PSK selection was completely independent of the keyed
 line for CW. In DX4WIN 6.02, it seems that your only choices for PSK
 keying are either the CW interface or VOX. What happened to the
 ability to independently choose a com port?

 In my 5.03 configuration, I had been using the LPT port for CW keying,

 and the com port for keying in either PSK31 or MMTTY. As long as I did

 not attempt to simultaneously open the PSK window and run MMTTY, this
 arrangement worked fine.

 Under 6.02, I attempted to work-arounds... neither which seem to work:

 First work-around: telling DX4WIN to use the LPT CW interface for PSK
 keying. It doesn't work. PSK does not key via the LPT port... although

 CW still works fine.

 Second work-around: Re-configure for CW keying via the com port. This
 allows CW and PSK to work properly, but prevents MMTTY from running.
 (DX4WIN grabs control of the CW port upon launch, and if you try to
 subsequently launch MMTTY you get a port conflict error.)

 Has anyone else encountered these problems? Does anyone have a
 suggestion on how to solve them?

Mel,

Thanks for the note - and I agree that, theoretically, you should be
able to key the rig from the same port that you use for CW (at least
that's what the config menu says ;-). I am only using 1 rig here, so my
work-around #1 _should_ work.

However, in DX4WIN 6.02, the software has a bug. If you configure to key
the rig in CW from a COM port, PSK is also keyed from the same COM port.
If you configure to key the rig in CW from the LPT port, PSK keying via
the same LPT port does not work.

Mel, you do need it under XP Pro if you want the capability to check
multiple time servers, or if you don't want to install a third party
fix to the WinXP Pro registry to change the 7 day interval for
checking. AboutTime gives more options than XP's built-in time checker.

Minor bugs report for 6.02:

When a progress report is selected, the displayed *frequencies* in MHz
(not bands in meters) are cut off so that 1.8 MHz is displayed as .8 MHz

and 3.7 as .7 MHz. Incidentally, shouldn't the progress report's
WkdTotal reflect the actual worked total (a sum of worked + sent +
confirmed), as opposed to worked + sent - confirmed?

Also, since I only recently subscribed to the reflector, I don't know
whether this has been brought up before or even beat up to death, but
are you ever planning to implement the actual frequency display instead
of (or in addition to) just bands? And, yes, I know about the Ctrl-R;
that just doesn't cut it, unfortunately. I don't see how adding this can

hurt the program - if anything, your revenue can only increase.

Some other stuff I'd like to see: ability to index the Logbook by QSL
Mgr, ability to resize columns in Logbook, radio buttons for frequently
used functions, program maintaining Contest mode and Special keys after
restarting, support for the W9XT contest card.

Thanks for reading,

one is referring to exact duplicate log entries. It is simply a matter
of merging the log into a new file which eliminates all dupes in one
pass. Takes a few seconds...

Hi,

Thanks very much for all of your responses regarding eliminating
duplicate
contacts from a single DX4WIN log.

Actually, the correct response to my question is no. There is no
utility or
process for eliminating duplicate contacts within a single DX4WIN log.

One can create additional logs and merge. Import or export. Or
whatever. When one introduces other logs via the ADIF process, it gets
even more complex
and less reliable.

In the end, this is a great weakness of the DX4WIN programs, although
there are
an enormous number of strengths.

At any rate, thanks for the advice.

Hello users of DX4WIN,

last Feb. 15 I posted the folloowing message:

Another observation is that all spots from internet are lost after exit

from DX4WIN. When I use my normal set-up to the local DC-cluster via
144
MHz spots remain.

Now the two cases are identical i.e. spots are lost when opening DX4WIN
again, v 6.02. I have the impression that it was ok in the beginning,
there
are spots saved from from Feb. 9 and 10. This has nothing to do with
checking 'Leave all windows in original position' in Preferences/Screen.

I think it is of value to save earlier spots in this window to check
where
a station has been operating etc.

Paul, please put it back in the next version, it works ok in v 5.03.

Now, I got the idea to reinstall 6.02 and found that when I had it
running
in DEMO mode the spots remained after exit and restart BUT as soon as I
put
my SM0LZT.key in, this function was gone.

I got one answer from AD1C/Jim who has not this problem. Are there any
others having the problem?
Using W98SE.

Hi,

I have posted this message a couple of times and am still looking for an
answer.

What is the quickest, most efficient way to recognize and elminate
dulpicate
QSOs in DX4WIN?

This would include merged DX4WIN files and imported ADIF files.

All of the QSOs, whether generated within DX4WIN or imported, would be
contained within a single DX4WIN log.

Is there any simple way to do this?

Thanks,

Re PF3 on XP pro with RAC loaded to disk... I do not see this
behaviour...
The PSK31 double-click seems not to work... But I've never used this
feature... So I'll make sure it isn't cockpit error
The lookup here is instantaneous... So maybe the first problem is with
using the CD... But it makes sense that lookup begins after the third
character is typed... Or perhaps on exiting the box...
I think more info in the prior Q is a good idea... but not hi
priority...
Sun time at DX is obvious from the map if day/night is enabled...
Agree re grey-black... But some of this is arguable either way...
Call on SWL card... Not necessary.. But wouldn't hurt...

And one more pitch for the next major release...

On real time entry...
F10 saves the QSO and logs start time... But keeps current QSO on
screen...
Enter saves QSO and sets stop time...

The way it works now is perfect for Dxing... But the change would take
care of casual logging and other countries logging requirements...

John,

I'm mixing my comments; starting with ***

1. Existing 6.02 problems (under Windows XP Home anyway)
o PSK31 mouse double click still does not populate the QSO window fields
properly (known bug)
 This has been reported previously, but typically for systems that
upgraded to XP. On a number of XP systems this works as expected. Looks
more like a MS upgrade issue to me at this time.

o If my packet, RTTY or rotator window fails to open (local problem with
USB ports and RF), the next time I open DX4WIN those windows are all
over the place, not where they belong. I have to re-set them.
 Have to check this

o The packet, and maybe RTTY, input area does not remember its size
setting. It must be reset every time I open DX4WIN (already reported).
*** Known issue; caused by changes in one of the libraries that I use
and I have not found a work around.

o PF3 causes a large DOS box to appear before the callsign/lookup window
appears when DX4WIN is opened with a shortcut. Changing the Startin
folder does not help. If DX4WIN is opened directly from the .exe file,
no DOS window appears. This problem has also been reported.
*** And I have no clue what is causing this to be different. What
data source are you using? Just wondering if other XP users see the
same?

o Re above, if I set Automatic Update, a search begins on the first
character typed with no delay, which ties things up for a while and
prevents me from completing typing the call
*** On-line has a warning about this; bet you have the callsign update
option enabled.

2. Wish List
o Green-reverse spots when not confirmed even when the contact
contributes to nothing (as discussed)
*** Done for the next release

o Ability to copy a few lines from the packet window so I can paste them
into a manager's address window
*** Works for me; I think you have to be in holding mode for this to
work (to stop text coming in)

o Ability to customize fields and their sequence in the Same Call window
(I would like to add QSL method, Label?, etc.)
*** Will check that out, but not sure how much demand there is for this

o See local time in the DX Sunrise/Sunset - Info window -- wasn't that
there once?
*** This display now uses the 'closest' info available (like state,
iota). Old version only used the country information which had a
somewhat 'bogus' field containing the time difference for the country
with UTC. If I can estimate the local time based on the longitude we
would be in business again.

o Revert the map to 5.03 where I could see a highlighted country much
more clearly
*** Not sure what has changed here; highlighted country is shown in
Yellow as was done in 5.03

o Double click on RTTY fields to populate QSO fields
*** In the planning stage; had more requests for this

o Use gray for disabled modes/bands only. Use black for confirmed mode
and band. Be able to ignore both.
*** Had a few requests for this, but not enough to make this change.
Many users are used to the current setup and consequences. (Spots become
gray when you work a station that was previously listed as important for
example)

o Station worked as part of SWL card
*** This comes up so now and then, and I don't see the need for this.
You confirm to the SWL that you were indeed active on that time on that
band. That is what SWL is about.

DX4win v6.02 shows band and mode information properly. When I attempt
to put the frequency data into Notes for this QSO with contol R it
does not transfer the data correctly on 70 and 23 cm. It transfers the
2 meter information correctly. Example: 440.620.0 transfers as 461,417

Hi Paul,
Can You modify the V.603 to fix these problems?

- 1st -

Just installed V.602 and migrated .INI file from my V.503.
On it there are a couple of labeled items about the custom 1 and 2
label definitions, as you can see:

[CustLab1]
LabelID=3DCustom1
Metric=3D1
SpacingTop=3D0.039
SpacingLeft=3D0.039
SpacingHeight=3D1.169
SpacingWidth=3D2.756
LabelHeight=3D1.091
LabelWidth=3D2.717
RightShift=3D0.000
DownShift=3D0.000
PageWidth=3D8.268
PageHeight=3D12.028
NumAcross=3D3
NumDown=3D10
PaperName=3DCustom
Portrait=3D1

[CustLab2]
LabelID=3DCustom2
Metric=3D1
SpacingTop=3D0.787
SpacingLeft=3D0.315
SpacingHeight=3D3.189
SpacingWidth=3D3.327
LabelHeight=3D3.110
LabelWidth=3D3.307
RightShift=3D0.000
DownShift=3D0.000
PageWidth=3D4.134
PageHeight=3D5.315
NumAcross=3D1
NumDown=3D1
PaperName=3DCustom
Portrait=3D1

After merging the .ini file, all the custom label fields are setting
to zero, and I must insert all the custom label definitions manually.
I already made You aware of this problem also on V.503

- 2nd -

Editing Custom Labels:
The MaxQSO size field is common to both custom1 and custom2 labels
record. Changing the custom1 label value You change also the custom2
label value and viceversa. But I need to set the Custom1 to 3 max qso,
and the Custom2 to max 10 qso or more (printing directly on the card).
I'm very disappointed to change this datum all the time when I change
label size! I already made You aware of this problem also on V.503

- 3rd -

Accessing to R.A.C.:
When I press F3 to read the RAC info, I can read the data correctly. But
switching to other qso, the RAC window rest inactive, showing the
previus data. I must press F3 any time I want a new info. (Very
tedious!!) On V.503 it runs well, showing itself a new info on any new
qso selected.

- 4th -

In V.602 the SSB reports changed to 3 digits - I am not happy about it.
I have never used 3 and I wish there was a small radio button in
preferences that allowed me to pick either 2 or 3 digits. Better yet the
3rd digit of the report could be listed under DISABLED FIELDS!!
(requested also by tonno/es5tv).

- 5th -

Manager database:
After an importing qsl manager file (.txt), I found wrong dates on its
database!! Urgent to fix!!!

- 6th -

Filter selection:
As qsl manager I appreciate very much the dx4win facility to load
several logs on the same file, selecting each time the one to up to
date. Unfortunately sometimes (adding, merging or importing new qsos) I
have a mishop, because I forget to change the PREFERENCE|QSO|GROUP|#
after making the QSO|FILTER|SELECTION of the specified log group (for
instance the #5). The result is that all qsos I want added on the
selected log #5 are added on the log #1 (as predisposed on
FILE|PREFERENCES|QSO|GROUP|#), with hard problems to restore the right
situation (re-install the backup file and repeat the qso adding). I
should like that the QSO|GROUP|# in the QSO window have an automatic
change, according to the QSO|FILTER|SELECTION activated. In fact, if I
select a specified group, I want to work on it only!!! Why not improve
an automatic QSO|GROUP|# change, in presence of the
QSO|FILTER|SELECTION switched NOT ZERO? In short, I should like the
QSO|GROUP will be fixed:
- equal to PREFERENCE|DEFAULT FOR NEW QSO|GROUP if the
FILTER|SELECTION is not activated (set to zero).
- equal to FILTER|SELECTION|# if the FILTER|SELECTION is activated
(not zero).

Only few lines of code needed, I think, as: IF
[QSO|FILTER|SELECTION] =3D=3D 0

  [QSO|GROUP|#] =3D=3D [FILE|PREFERENCES|QSO|GROUP|#]

ELSE  [QSO|GROUP|#] =3D=3D [QSO|FILTER|SELECTION|#]

ENDIF

I already made You aware of this problem also on V.503

- 7th -

When importing QSL Managers or Managers' Addresses would like to see
which entries were changed!! Not just Replaced 55 and Added 32. There
could be messages the same way as when merging CTY files! (Maybe I need
to restore some data!!) (requested also by tonno/es5tv).

That is all for the moment. I'm testing
I hope it is of help!
Ciao Steve

Here's how I think of the colors (sorry, no priority numbers for me):

DU9RG is spotted on 40 meter CW. I have never worked DU on 40 meters,

DU9/N0NM is later spotted on 40 meter CW, the spot will be light red

on SSB, same will apply, since it's not confirmed on this band.

I think the best solution would be to add another color combo for
un-worked
band/mode combos.

If the user is happy with the present system, simply change the new
color
scheme to green on white,
so it has the same look as it does now in 6.02.

For those that want to know whether or not a band/mode combo is new,
then
they will have a new color
scheme to know that. (Regardless of whether or not it counts for an
award.)

4. All time new mode/band no award (reverse green)

6. Mode award not confirmed (red)

[Dx4win] Version 6.01 and Windows XP

I have a possible workaround that works here

Interestingly, the Alt-S works if the focus is on the Main Window...

If You avoid Alt-S and use the File - Save menu... It seems to save
reliably...

It might be useful if those who have duplicated the problem could verify
if this is the case with their computers also...

If this is the case... I would recommend that anyone using XP, Win2000
(not ME) and possibly NT avoid the Alt-B and Alt-S shortcuts until the
problem is resolved... Since I noticed that under some conditions they
work, and sometimes they fail... Remember... If it fails with Alt-S you
lose any changes to the file since the last backup... Best be safe...

 Hello All,

 Installed 6.01 on a computer with XP operating system.

 Few of observations.

 I like the Alt+S save feature in Version 5.03, and I believe that it
should
 be available in version 6.01, but when I enter a contact in 6.01, and
 then use the Alt+S keystrokes, DX4WIN closes. The whole program
 closes, not
just
 my log file. I loaded version 6.01 onto a computer running Windows ME,

 and I can use the Alt+S feature just fine. Anyone else running 6.01 on

 XP and having the same problem?

 Also, I have set the map options to Show Spot Country, but I'm not
seeing
 the spot countries prefix or the country being highlighted on the map
 as spots roll by on the cluster. Again, just me, or is there a
 problem?

 Lastly, and I noticed this on both ME and XP, when I merged my .cty
 files, there were quite a few contacts that had to be cleaned up to
 get my
country
 counts correct to what I had in version 5.03. FO prefixes, 3X0C/LU,
 VK9's, some of my K5K contacts, some of my K1B contacts, some FR
 stuff, VP6DI contacts, etc., had to be cleaned up. Might not be a bad
 idea to check up on contacts with multi country prefixes.

Robert and Others,

Looks indeed like a conversion problem reading old logs. Try the
following:

1. In version 5.03 export your log using the dx4win4 filter
2. Close version 5, start version 6
3. Open your 'bad' log file
4. Delete all QSOs (this will preserve any selection definitions and
groupnames you have in your log) 5. Import the log saved in step 1 using
the dx4win4 filter

Sorry for the inconvenience,

[Dx4win] V6.01 - adjustable map colors for land

2003-01-30 Thread Mel Martin (VE2DC)
There are a few outstanding minor bugs with the map... That's one of
them... There are a few calculation problems with the Albers Conic...
That's why it's greyed... And you know about the county search... And
worst of all... Toronto is shown as the Capital of Canada... Much to the
dismay of people from Ottawa (the actual capital)... Nothing worth
holding up the release of ver 6. I can't speak for Paul, but I suppose
he will post the corrected binary when he has it available. I believe
the map code is written by a third party... Not by Paul himself.

  Has anyone been able to adjust the land color on the Map in the new
version? The water color is easily adjustable, but the land color
adjustment just doesn't seem to take. Is there some trick to getting
this to work?

Hi Rod,

In the PSK31 Settings|TX section is the possibility to mark USE CW
CONTROL this means it follows your preferences|SETTINGS for CW/PTT if
you specify CW/PTT via LPT(x) then it will be keyed via this LPT(x) port
if you specify CW/PTT via com(x) then it will be keyed that serial port

 2. In the old DX4WIN if you clicked on Settings|TX there was a spot

 3. While the TX flag is in the new version it does not give me the

Just upgraded to v 6.01 from 5.03. I moved a copy of log over from 5.03
SAVE directory to the 6.01 SAVE directory. Looked at my country totals,
they are a bit off (1 here or there lower; presumably need to do
something with merging the old and new country file).

But the big problem is that all my satellite QSOs are missing. They
don't even show up in the 6.01 version . . . like they never existed!
But they do show up just fine in 5.03.

Thoughts?

[Dx4win] Additional Search Features

2003-01-26 Thread Mel Martin (VE2DC)
I suppose that's the problem with generating Cabrillo. Contesting
logging programs require contant fixes und upgrades to keep up with the
contests... Since DX4Win is not intended primarily as a contest
logger... Adding Cabrillo would necessitate constant tweaking to get the
Cabrillo correct. It's not a standard like ADIF where the format is
fixed over time.

Writelog is good at generating Cabrillo. If you watch the writelog
reflector, it is evident that an effort is required to generate the
proper cabrillo file for each contest and sponsor. I built several
Cabrillo files by hand for the ARRL contests and decided that WriteLog
was a good investment.

 1. File preferences | QSO | Searching | QSO Date:

 2. In QSO Window: F8 to start a search

 3. Select 80M in the band

 4. Select N for confirmed

 5. Select 01/01/1950 or something for QSL date
 (indicates card has been sent)

 6. Enter 01/01/2000 in the date and press Enter

 Because of step 1, you get a prompt for the ending
 date; enter 01/01/2003

 If the logbook window is open, you will see a list
 of all QSOs matching your criteria;
 PgUp and PgDn in the QSO Window will show you the

 There is a lot more you can do with searching; read
 the on-line help and the user's guide

[Dx4win] Ver. 6

My findings also... I like DXBase... But it was very slow on my Pentium

I have found that to be true also.

DXBase is a very resource intensive program. It takes forever to load
and once it does, it's very slow. This contributed to my decision to go
with DX4Win several years ago.

In contrast, DX4Win is a very efficient program, works well while other
things are running, and even 5.03 does everything I *need*.

My expectation is that the new version will be excellent also, and will
be well worth the wait.

I'm curious what is so urgent that the release of version 6 is not soon
enough?

[Dx4win] RE Upgrade

2003-01-25 Thread Mel Martin (VE2DC)
You can log the power in the QSO Notes... In fact, if it's usually the
same... Put it in the same place you put the macro for logging the
frequency...

Logging start-stop seems to still be an issue... I wouldn't mind that
capability myself...

I would still like a separate boxes for Freq Power Op's name Maybe
ver 7...

Charges are nominal... Price you pay for ongoing support... I've looked
at them all, and still like DX4Win best... Though nothing's perfect...
For example, I like some of the features in another program that has
very nice support for up to 4 radios... But the demo blew up on me
twice... Maybe my fault... But I lost interest!

DX4Win is still missing some features I'd like to see, but it's stable,
has an easy to manipulate user interface, is very quick, updates award
tracking in real time and isn't missing anything critical...

I've had several logging programs over the last few years. The last one
was Turbolog but as time went by it became more and more out of date.
There were constant promises of upgrade but they never happened so I
moved on.

I moved on to DX4WIN. This suits me at present but I don't necessarily
feel any loyalty to it. When its time to move on that's it. Bye.

At present there are few irritations:

1. No start and finish times
2. No power box
Both are required to be recorded by the British licensing authorities.
3. I doesn't seem to integrate with a decent rtty program like mmtty.

Any new version is going to cost money and there are products out there
that don't cost anything. Logger for one.

What is likely to keep me loyal is the bloody hassle of converting my
logs and the learning curve of getting to know the new brand.

Lou,

I don't have any experience with the interface you are considering, but
I did have (apparently) the same problem with my CT-17 and faced the
same quandry. My choice was to assume that the MAX232 chip in the CT-17
was fried (the IC is about the most fragile component in there) and
decided to try replacing it. Using de-soldering braid and a 15 watt
iron, it is quite easy to remove the old chip. Since I didn't want to
risk heat damage to the new the new chip, I installed a chip socket
instead, then simply plugged in the new chip. The CT-17 now works like
a charm, and the job was much easier than I thought it would be. The
replacement for the MAX232CPE chip cost $2.19, and the 16 pin
solder-tail sockets sell for 10 cents each (but you have to by 10!) The
real eye opener was when I priced all the components in the CT-17, and
the total came out around 10 bucks! But then you wouldn't have that
nice ICOM stencil on the box!

Replacing the chip isn't like building your own interface, but it sure
was easy and satisfying.

Got my parts from Jameco Electronics. They do have a web-presence and a
very nice catalog.

Good luck!

[Dx4win] IC775DSP/CT-17 vs DX4WIN

2002-12-10 Thread Mel Martin (VE2DC)
I'm not so sure that is a good idea Jim. I discovered this problem when
going back through my log and found a few QSO's on bizarre
frequencies... Sometimes the bobble strikes just as you log the QSO...
Tranceive really should be off with DX4WIN...

I used CT also... So I just put a reminder in the batch file that
started CT... Something like...

@ECHO Is the tranceive mode set?
@PAUSE

It's not a problem with newer rigs... But some of the older ones are a
little difficult to switch transceive on and off... It really would be
nice if DX4WIN worked like CT, YPLog and Writelog... On my wish list...

bobble while tuning the dial (temporarily go to strange

remember to turn it back on when running CT, which expects the radio to

babble frequency when the VFO knob is turned.

OK maybe I am missing something still (more than likely) I have a
Yaesu FT-1000D configured to work with DX4WIN. That works fine. I have
tried $$ and $$ in the Note for this QSO window with out any success.
Is there something else that I need to do? I do not see any settings in
the preferences... Is there any other place to do it? I work a few
people this morning to try it...

 You only put the $$ in the program one time and then it automatically
 records the exact frequency of each qso after that.

 It seems crazy that you have to put the $$ in every QSO... How do you
import
 it from a contest?

 There really should be an easier way

[Dx4win] IC775DSP/CT-17 vs DX4WIN

2002-12-07 Thread Mel Martin (VE2DC)
I believe 46 is correct... Though you can change it... Handy if you have
2 775s ;-)

I'd use 9600... But that should not be an issue... 1200 should work
fine... Make sure you have the right COM port connected... You are
using the correct cable... Not a null modem cable or something... You
have power to the CT17... The Com port isn't disabled in the BIOS if
it's on the main-board.

Try another cable... Another COM port... Try another program such as
YPLog which has a very easy to configure interface... And a free demo
download. You should also get a copy of C-IV commander available for
download elsewhere...

If it still doesn't work... Could be anything... Time to scope the TTL
interface and see if it's working... Good luck...

Ben-

I used to have that same setup and it worked fine. Try seeing the radio
and program to 9600 baud and I have some vague memory the radio address
is 4C or 5C, not 46.

[Dx4win] CW keyboard question

2002-12-03 Thread Mel Martin (VE2DC)
Paul mentioned in the past it's on the list...
In the mean time, Barry, you can find a rs232 Y connector and you'll be
in business... And save a port too.

Subject: [Dx4win] CW keyboard question

After using DX4WIN for almost 10 years, I just got the urge to try the
CW keyboard for the first time. To my chagrin, I find there is no choice

of serial ports - it only uses the same COM port as the radio. This is
the
case in my version 4.07. Do the newer versions of DX4WIN support
COM port selection for CW keying?
Tnx,
Barry

[Dx4win] RE: Dx4win digest, Vol 1 #275 - 1 msg

2002-11-03 Thread Mel Martin (VE2DC)
Well... First things first... Don't even TRY to transmit unless you can
receive...

Make sure that your sound card is truly compatible with the
SoundBlaster... I had a sound card at one point that worked fine for
music and such... But couldn't copy PSK31... It would copy the
occasional few letters, but mostly gibberish. I was so disappointed, I
wondered why anybody bothered with PSK31... Anyway, switching the sound
card solved the problem.

That being said, I would expect that if the card wasn't compatible, MMTY
wouldn't work either...

If you have no power out when you key the transmitter, you obviously
have no audio going to the transmitter. Do you hear the psk31 being
sent? If so... Something is amiss in your connections...
