Had only made two QSOs on 160 previously in my ham career, so didn't know

[Elecraft] BFO Cal for low pitch CW and narrow filters

2006-12-04 Thread Chuck Guenther
I am pleased to report that K2 s/n 5853 is in the transmitter alignment phase,
and all is going well. Work was interrupted for a few days because we lost
power in Thursday's ice storm here in STL. The house was down to 50 deg. F,
when power was finally restored.

Christine at Elecraft does a superb job at stuffing those parts bags. At one
point, I relied on her work to provide me with a parity check of sorts on my
capacitor installation. I got suspicious when I had a 561 cap left over but
was missing a 560 cap. I reviewed all the other spots that were supposed to
receive a560, and sure enough I found I had made an error. I was able to
remove the misplaced cap and save it too.

The receiver sounds great, and compares favorably with my Ten Tec Omni 6 loaded
with INRAD filters.

When doing the BFO calibration, I followed the recommended settings, which I
understand are based on a 600 Hz pitch. I like to use narrow filters at a 400
Hz pitch. I'd like to set up for the following filter sequence: 600, 400, 300,
150 Hz bandwidths.

Is there a formula I can use to calculate the BFO frequencies I need for CW
normal and reverse to get the pitch and bandwidths I want? Have others
produced their own charts or lists of customized BFO settings ? I apologize if
I've missed something in the manual or in the list archives.

Chuck NI0C

[Elecraft] K2 XIT

2006-12-04 Thread G3SJJ
With XIT selected, should the readout indicate a difference in transmit
frequency when the knob is turned? Readout on my K2 varies when RIT or
RIT/XIT is selected but not when XIT is selected.

I recently called 2 stations split using XIT and found I was on their Rx
freq. Very embarrassing, but strangely doesn't seem to be doing it now
yet the readout is as above. I definitely had XIT on at the time.

RE:[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: Kangaroo KX1!

2006-12-04 Thread Paul Picking
Ed, if you don't find the component with the freeze mist and plan to be in that
kind of chill often, maybe one of those chemical handwarmers underneath and
mebbe with a cheap insulated lunch bag, or plastic 3X5 file box you can keep
enuff heat rising to maintain the temp to operate. Rubbermaid makes a cheap
plastic black file box for abt 50 cents that I found in the office section of
Walmart. Notice: I have no afiliation with Rubbermaid or Walmart hi hi. I use
one as a holder for my KX1 in shack. I notched out the lid where latch is to
plug key cable in and placed a rubber spacer on back of lid to angle KX1 up for
better viewing angle on shelf above my operating position. I glued no slip
shelf liner on bottom of of both pieces ( top of lid) and case with it fully
opened. U cud use the main part for spare batteries or whatever accessories
would fit. Any way I kind of got off of the temperature subject. Hope you find
it or resolve it some how.Paul WD8OJL

Hello all,

Well I now have what's called a Kangaroo KX1!
It hiked 2-miles up the mountain to Pulpit Rock on the AT.
I setup my BW Vertical and my KX1. I then hit the tune buttons and NO
POWER OUTPUT! I then put my KX1 under my shirt to warm it up. I waited
about five minutes and hooked it up to my BW - full power output 4w!

I had to do this every qso and make the qso short so I could keep my KX1
transmitting in the cold weather that was below freezing. So during the
breaks, I was walking around with my KX1 tucked on my belly under my two
shirts and two fleece jackets just like a Kangaroo thus the name
Kangaroo KX1.

I will troubleshoot my KX1 soon with freeze mist. I plan to first put my
KX1 tuner in the CAL mode to bypass it and see if the problem is in the
tuner. If not then hit the transmitter with Freeze-Mist to find the bad
component.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 XIT

2006-12-04 Thread Stewart Baker
Chris,
What you are seeing is correct. Only when you go onto transmit will you see the
effect of the XIT on the frequency readout. If you want to know exactly what
frequency you will be transmitting on with XIT selected then you can select the
RIT as well. Of course you need to deselect the RIT to listen on your original
frequency. Hope this helps..

[Elecraft] K2 XIT

2006-12-04 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL

It will show the offset when you actually transmit.

You should engage both the RIT and XIT and then when you wiggle the
offset knob, you can see the qrg change. Then release the RIT and
you're back on the correct listening qrg and ready to xmit on the qrg
with the desired offset.

It is a pain.

See my previous posting (link below).

RE: [Elecraft] BFO Cal for low pitch CW and narrow filters

2006-12-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chuck,

The full 'equation' also depends on your exact filter center IF frequency.
It is better to use Spectrogram which provides a visual display of the
filter passband placement, and you can set things optimally for any pitch
that you desire. There are instructions within the K2 Dial Calibration
article on my website http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com and also info at the
Elecraft website. You can download the last freeware version of Spectrogram
from Tom Hammond's website www.n0ss.com - that version has more than
adequate capability for setting the K2 filters and BFO frequencies.

If you want to try a 'formula', I would suggest 2 steps - to change the BFO
frequencies by 200 Hz, for each CW/CWr pair of frequencies, increase the
lower frequency by 0.2 kHz and decrease the higher frequency by 0.2 kHz -
then as a second step - If your crystal set was marked 3.6 (the most
common), do nothing, but if it was higher (3.7 or 3.8), reduce all the
frequencies above by 0.1 or 0.2 kHz and if your crystal set was 3.4 or 3.5,
increase all the frequencies above by 0.1 or 0.2 kHz.

Even so, you may be off by up to 100 Hz since the real center frequency will
vary from crystal set to crystal set - Elecraft matches the crystals to 10
Hz, and the markings on the crystal bags are only to the nearest 100 Hz.
Note that you can achieve better filter passband placement with Spectrogram
than with just using the frequency settings listed in the manual for this
reason alone.

By far, the easiest and most accurate is to use Spectrogram after you
complete the K2. At the point where you can receive 10 MHz WWV, you can
accurately set the 4 MHz reference oscillator and all the filters so you
achieve not only proper filter settings but good dial calibration as well.
My website article tells you how to achieve all that with no equipment other
than a computer with a soundcard, a stereo cable to connect the K2 to the
soundcard and the K2 internal frequency probe.

Once you have the filter settings correct for your purposes, write down the
settings in case they are ever wiped out (by a Master Reset for instance) -
you can restore the correct settings quickly.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 XIT

2006-12-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chris,

hen the K2 is in receive, the receive frequency only is displayed. In
transmit, the transmit frequency is displayed (hard to see during keying).
Check the K2 manual page 94 for information on how RIT and XIT work - when
XIT is on, you can see the transmit frequency during receive by also turning
on RIT.

I prefer to jusst use split all the time - it better matches my thinking - I
find I can get confused with all the combinations, especially when trying to
operate quickly.

[Elecraft] Heil Handi Mic

2006-12-04 Thread Frank Van Cleef W1WCG
Greetings, all

I recently acquired a Heil Handi-Mic with the HC-5 element, intending to use
it with a new K2 radio (#5510). I used straight-across wiring for the
configuration connector in the front panel since the Handi-Mic is equipped
with a cable wired for Kenwood mikes. No resistor from pin 1 to pin 6 since
the element is dynamic. The mike does work, but the output seems low -- the
ALC indication barely lights the top bar, and the RF output barely shows on
the louder peaks. A MH-2 mike shows a little more output, though not that
much more. The over-all feeling is that the Handi-Mic has a relatively low
output level and may need a preamp to work properly with the K2. The mike
works about the same with either K2 here. I've noted the diagram for a mike
preamp for the K2, but before I build up something like that, I'm just
wondering if anybody else has tried the Handi-Mic, and what any experience
has been with respect to driving the K2 with that mike. Comments, anyone? ?
?

TIA,

Van W1WCG

I returned the usb-to-serial box this morningso the immediate

I wonder when ham manufacturers will drop the durn RS232 ports and
pick up USB. It seems that it is WAY past the time when this should have
happened!! I wonder if ELECRAFT might decide to lead the pack with a new

in the need for RS232 by using the same cable for other modules such as
the QRO tuner.

I would not advise using any USB serial adapter with the KIO2. The KIO2
output is not a standard serial port. There is an AUXBUS output on one of
the pins. I seem to recall that a few people have damaged their K2s by
using standard serial cables that had something else connected to this
pin. Do you know what is connected to this pin on your USB adapter?

[Elecraft] K2 Problem 12 Watts Out With Power Control Fully CCW

2006-12-04 Thread Joseph Szczubelek
The build for K2 ser # 5628 has been going well until
I got to the Alignment and Test Part III 40 meter
transmitter alignment section.

Problem:

With current set to 2.0 AMPS and the power control
fully CCW I measured 7 watts on an external wattmeter.
The internal wattmeter had NO indication. When I press
the tune control with the display set for voltage
and current I see 13.3 volts and 1.88 amps. The
current will start to slowly rise at .02 amps per
second and will reach 2.00 amps in about 10 seconds
and the HI CURRENT message will appear with 7 watts
output.

If I set the power to .5 watts the current will start
out at 1.98 amps and the 2.00 amp threshold and HI
CURRENT message will appear much quicker - about 1
second. I still get 7 watts of output indicated on an
external wattmeter.

Setting the current to 3.00 amps and the power control
fully CCW I get 12 watts out with 13.0 volts and the
current starting at 2.84 amps creeping up at .02 amps
per second. At around 10 seconds the HI CURRENT
message will appear when 3.0 amps has been reached.

Setting the power to .5 watts will cause the same
thing to happen but HI CURRENT message appears quickly
with 12 watts output.

Additional Info:

The K2 has passed all checks up to this point. I am
using a Heathkit 50 ohm dummy load. Turning the power
control up or down gives the indication of the
desired power but has no effect. L1 and L2 gives a
nice peak for 40 meters. They were very close if not
right on from the 40 meter receiver test. Measuring
the resistance at the collectors of finals Q7 and Q8
shows 3.7K for both transistors. The power output is
being controlled by limiting the current not by the
power control. The internal wattmeter gives no
indication on transmit but works as an S meter on
receive. I am using a 30 amp Ashton switching supply.
It was Sunday evening so I called it a day.

Best,

Joe Szczubelek - K9DMV

Re: [Elecraft] Heil Handi Mic

2006-12-04 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy

Van,

The Heil HC-5 and HC-4 mic elements do produce less output than many other
types of mic element, and you will find a number of Posts to the List
discussing this issue. Unless these mic elements are quite close to one's
mouth it does seem that a preamp is required with the K2. I use a Heil
Proset Plus headset which has a boom assembly containing a HC-5 and a HC-4
which means that the mic is about 2 or 3 inches from my mouth, and I do not
need a preamp to drive my K2/100 to full specified output, in fact on 40m I
have to move the mic a little to avoid the ALC becoming too active. FWIW my
wife says that I have a 'quiet' voice.

RE: [Elecraft] Heil Handi Mic

2006-12-04 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I don't have personal experience with the Heil mic, but you are describing a
K2 making full power output if I understand your comments correctly.

When the first (right hand) ALC bar just flickers, that means the mic is
providing *more* audio than the K2 needs for full RF output and the ALC is
turning down the overall transmit gain. So, if you have the POWER set for a
K2 to produce 10 watts or a K2/100 to produce 100 watts, and one ALC bar
flickers, more audio from the mic will do no good at all.

It's important to check that at full RF power. As you turn down the power
you'll see more and more ALC bars light as the level control reduces the
output to match the POWER control setting. (The K2 should not be run above
10 watts on SSB to avoid unnecessary distortion, although running the power
wide open on CW is FB).

You also need to have whatever maximum level of compression you want to use
switched On and do the test on the band where the K2 has the *least*
transmit gain. That's always been 10 meters on all the K2's I've heard about
and seen.

If you get an ALC bar flickering under those conditions, more mic gain does
nothing for you. If not, then perhaps a preamp will help.

Watching your RF output, the bar associated with the maximum power should
just lightly flicker unless you are using a lot of compression. Human voice
has a huge average-to-peak amplitude ratio, and the peaks are very brief
and infrequent compared to the rest of the spectrum. The RF bargraph display
is a peak reading display so it fairly accurately indicates the very brief
and infrequent voice peaks.

One very simple change in the K2 that makes a large difference for mics with
marginal output is to change resistor R14 on the SSB module board from the
original value of 1k ohms to something between 5.6k and 10k. That resistor
is across the mic input. Increasing its value raises the audio level
presented to the speech compressor.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Problem 12 Watts Out With Power Control Fully CCW

2006-12-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Joe,

The initial problem to be solved is that there is no indication of power
output being fed back to the K2 microprocessor.

The most likely source is a bad solder connection and the second most likely
is a misplaced component.

Keep your testing periods short, ignore the high current messages for now,
and proceed as follows:
Start your search at RF Board diode D9 - if all is well at that point, there
will be a DC voltage during transmit periods - how large it is depends on
the amount of RF output, for now just be certain you have a good solid DC
voltage there - anything over a volt or so will indicate that the RF Output
Detector is working.

Next point is on the Control Board - the VFRDET signal which appears at pin
10 of P4 - the DC voltage during transmit should be about the same as you
measured at the cathode of D9.

Lastly, check the VRFDET signal at the microprocessor - U6 pin 2. The
voltage should be about the same as at P4 pin 10 if R12 is properly in
place.

Let us know where the VRFDET signal path is broken.

RE: [Elecraft] Heil Handi Mic

2006-12-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Frank,

Unfortunately the Heil HC-4 and HC-5 elements have lower output than typical
mics. There is one in the Handi-Mic set that should work well with the K2 -
and that is the one for the Icom (Heil number HM-iC) perhaps you could
arrange an exchange.

In general the Icom mics use an electret element with high output level -
the audio input needs of the K2 and the Icom are similar.

If you do wish to retain the HC-5 element, then your best choice is to use a
pre-amp. There are work-arounds such as changing the value of KSB2 R14, but
IMHO, the best all-around solution is to use a pre-amp and set the pre-amp
gain to provide the output needed by the K2. If I recall correctly, the
proper output level is -40 dBm.

[Elecraft] KX1 Receiver Deaf

2006-12-04 Thread nlhouck
It seems not all my emails are getting through, so if this is redundant please
excuse me. I built a KX1 with 3080 and tuner options. Initially I had low
audio but resolved by fixing a missed solder joint. With that done, It passed
the initial alignment and all seemed fine. With proper ear buds the audio
level is actually a bit loud for me. Unfortunately, unless I touch the circuit
board near U6 the unit is deaf. Touching the board brings the unit to life and
the receive is pretty good. I've resoldered everything in the area. Also
checked voltages at U6. They are ok, but about 0.5 v higher than spec'd on
pins 5 and 6. I've removed the tuner ( which seems to work ) and tested.
Could it be a CAP, since I'm a pretty big capacitive load?

The build was fun and I'm learning a lot, but could really use someone to help
me clear the cobwebs and work through this problem. Thanks in advance for any
help you can offer as I'm anxious to play on the air. I don't want to operate
the unit with my finger stuck on the circuit board, I might give people the
wrong impression of ham rado operators.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 XIT

2006-12-04 Thread G3SJJ
Firstly thanks to everyone who answered my query, either on the
Reflector or privately. I can confirm that everything that you all
suggest should happen is happening. So from the RIT/XIT point there is
no problem with my K2 and I was using it correctly. On rethinking this I
wonder if I have another problem. I haven't had chance to do any further
checks but since I had (successfully so I thought) re-aligned the K2
earlier in the day, I just wonder if I have the BFO in the wrong place,
even though filters all sound good. I used Spectrogram.

Scenario 1 - Hear VQ9JC on 20m and want say hello/goodbye before he
leaves there. He is working split, so switching RIT on off, I find his
rx freq and tap XIT. He completes a QSO so I call. No QSO. This happens
several times including a policeman who says G3 Up. I sense something is
wrong and stop calling. Jim has confirmed he heard me on his TX freq at
a good strength but didn't want encourage a co-channel QSO. Fair enough
but I was convinced I was transmitting split.

Scenario 2 - Was a bit apprehensive after Scenario 1 but decided to call
NO2R in ARRL 160m contest. I know I can works States on 160. Had 19
Stateside Qs in the last hour of RSGB 160m Contest recently. Nothing,
even pushing my amp hard. Most unusual. This was co-channel, no split.

Once is one thing but twice makes me feel there is a problem. RIT/XIT
looks OK, so I think I need to do zero beat and BFO checks before I go
much further.

Download version 5.17 (the last freeware version),
Use the instructions on Tom Hammond's website www.n0ss.net or the links on
the Elecraft site and they will match.

I hope you did not pay for that version 14.1 yet - it is much more than you
need for setting the K2 filters.
Of course if you have other uses for the bells and whistles, that is great,
but you will have to dig the 'how to use' info out of the Spectrogram help
files. Most of us have not used the updated versions of Spectrogram, so we
can't help a lot there.

I am not clear on all parts of your operation detailed - you said switching RIT on

correct, but I did not understand all the steps in the procedure you outlined.

to 5.6K.

I considered an external preamp, but it seemed to me more efficient to
reduce the unnecessary loss at the mic input rather than add external active
components to make up for it.

[Elecraft] Working split (was XIT)

2006-12-04 Thread Fred Jensen
Hmmm ... I've never used XIT except to test it. When working DX split,
I usually use both the VFO's in SPLIT mode. It takes me several moments
to get it right, but it usually takes me quite awhile to break a pileup
and once I have it set, the operation of the radio seems more natural to
me. [Must remember to cancel SPLIT after I've copied his 5NN and sent
mine, however :-) ]

On a several occasions however, I've come across a station QSX up with
only a little pileup, and I've searched for the guy he's working with
the tuning dial. I then tap RIT, tune RIT back down to his QRG real
quick and call him. It's less intuitive for me than standard SPLIT, but
I can make it happen much faster. One problem with this, however is
that my RIT only goes about 800 Hz either way (is that adjustable
somewhere?) so his QSX has to be close to his tx freq.

I guess the K2 provides options for everyone.

RE: [Elecraft] Heil Handi Mic

2006-12-04 Thread Mike Short
I am using the Heil HM-5, and the audio is just fine according to reports.
I didn't have to do anything special. I set SSb A menu to 2, and SSbB menu
to 3-1,

Just another option.

I recently acquired a Heil Handi-Mic with the HC-5 element,
 intending to use
it with a new K2 radio (#5510). I used straight-across wiring for the
configuration connector in the front panel since the Handi-Mic is
 equipped
with a cable wired for Kenwood mikes. No resistor from pin 1 to
 pin 6 since
the element is dynamic. The mike does work, but the output seems
 low -- the
ALC indication barely lights the top bar, and the RF output
 barely shows on
the louder peaks. A MH-2 mike shows a little more output, though
 not that
much more. The over-all feeling is that the Handi-Mic has a
 relatively low
output level and may need a preamp to work properly with the K2.

[Elecraft] OT: What Country is 4N5Y? And Why Don't I Hear Any CW Signals?

2006-12-04 Thread Jeff
Sorry to go off-topic, but I worked 4N5Y with QRP CW on 80 meters in the
CQWW DX Contest, and I'm confused as to his official DXCC country. QRZ.com
lists his country as Serbia and Montenegro, my logging program says just
Serbia, but the ARRL DXCC list (
http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc/dxcclist.txt ) does not list 4N at all.
Please tell me how and where I can find his official country for DXCC
purposes. Is it Serbia, Montenegro, or Serbia and Montenegro?

By the way, it's 2300 UTC on Dec. 4 and I can't hear any CW signals on any
band on my K2. What's up with that? Did we just get hit with a solar flare
or something? I'm using an indoor dipole at a new QTH, and wondering
whether it's working.

RE: [Elecraft] KX1 Receiver Deaf

2006-12-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Nate,

I replied to this a day or two ago, I guess you did not get it - so here is
what I sent.
--
The most likley problem is that you may not be getting a signal from the DDS
to pin 6 of the receive mixer (U6).

Does it transmit with good power? If not, check L4 and L5 with an ohmmeter
to see if they are open - they are easily damaged when installing them.

If it transmits, then check C3 for correct value and proper soldering. If
you have an RF Probe (or can construct one), check the RF Voltage at U6 pin
6 - it should be greater than 70 mV to meet the mixer specs, but the usual
amplitude is half a volt of more.

 Subject: [Elecraft] KX1 Receiver Deaf

It seems not all my emails are getting through, so if this is
redundant please excuse me. I built a KX1 with 3080 and tuner
options. Initially I had low audio but resolved by fixing a
missed solder joint. With that done, It passed the initial
alignment and all seemed fine. With proper ear buds the audio
level is actually a bit loud for me. Unfortunately, unless I
touch the circuit board near U6 the unit is deaf. Touching the
board brings the unit to life and the receive is pretty good.
I've resoldered everything in the area. Also checked voltages at
U6. They are ok, but about 0.5 v higher than spec'd on pins 5
and 6. I've removed the tuner ( which seems to work ) and
tested. Could it be a CAP, since I'm a pretty big capacitive load?

The build was fun and I'm learning a lot, but could really use
someone to help me clear the cobwebs and work through this
problem. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer as I'm
anxious to play on the air. I don't want to operate the unit
with my finger stuck on the circuit board, I might give people
the wrong impression of ham rado operators.

[Elecraft] Filter Setup Questions

2006-12-04 Thread Fred Jensen
I'm setting up my K2/100 for RTTY, using a RigBlaster and MixW. I
recently had an unrelated KPA100 problem, and Gary fixed it for me, and
also totally aligned the radio [thanks Gary, that service was totally
worth it, my K2 is way better than I thought, and I was pretty impressed
before!]. I don't want to change anything he did, it's really perfect,
except I want to adjust the BW of one of the SSB filters a little. Can
I just adjust the BW in CAL FIL for that filter, and not mess with the
BFO settings?I just want to make it a little wider and I really
don't want to undo what Gary did with everything else.

Second, are the USB and LSB filters locked together ... i.e. if I change
the BW on USB, have I also changed the BW on LSB?

Third, if my mark-space are normal below 15m, will they be inverted on
15m and above?

I just barely understand the K2 filter things, and sometimes I have QSB
in my mind. This is one of those times. (OK, maybe I don't
understand the K2 filter things like I said).

[Elecraft] KX1 Acting Up

2006-12-04 Thread thomaskd
I recently built a KX1 and it went together smoothly with no real problems. I
made a few QSO's and it seemed to work just fine.

I turned it on today and it is acting up on me. I was on battery power and
switched to a power supply to see if that helped, but no luck.

It is a basic 20M/40M unit with no ATU in it yet. (It is sitting here half
built).

The symptoms are that when I turn it on I get a loud hum/buzz in the earphones
for about 2 seconds and then it goes to a quiet hum/buzz. This happens whether
or not there is an antenna attached or not.

Also..on the LED it seems to be showing the signal strength but I cannot get
the LED to change. I can press the various buttons and the VFO knob and get no
change in response. The hum/buzz continues and there is no change in the LCD.

I am going to take a good look at the solder joints and see if there is
anything obvious. Then I will check them again.

While I go through that process, does anyone have pointers on where to
concentrate the efforts? The troubleshooting guide in the back seems to depend
heavily on two digit codes on the LED...but I don't get one of those.

Any and all help appreciated!!

RE: [Elecraft] 160M Dead on my K2

2006-12-04 Thread Mark Adams
Don,

The suggestions did not fix my issue. All solder joints were redone
and I checked everything with a magnifier light. Relay K2 works fine. I
checked it on 80m where the RX is fine. I checked the bottom of the
main board and all is well there too.

When I switch bands to and from 160, I can see a small blip on my old
analog VM from pin 16 to GND. I see a similar blip when I turn off/on
the RX antenna using pins 3 and GND.

Any further thoughts?

73,
Mark K2QO

Quoting Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 Mark,

Well, if relay K1 does not switch, you will not have any output on
 160
meters - but you also said that it does not receive on the Rx
 antenna
either - so relay K2 must not be working either. That combination
 would
point to something wrong in the relay coil circuits. Check all the
soldering on pins 3, 4, and 16 of J1 and check the soldering on the
 header
as well (that will likely require removing the heat sink from the K2.
  Also
check pin 1 of the header and J1 (that is the signal path for the RX
antenna). Check the soldering on the K160RX board at the relay pins
 too.

You are probably looking for an unsoldered connection, or one that
 was not
adequately heated. These connections can often work initially but
 develop
enough oxidation to give trouble after a year or so.

[Elecraft] K2 #2225 is Down

2006-12-04 Thread Roy Morris
Today I turned on my K2100/KAT100 and the receiver was dead. Audio was working
OK. No RF output. I stripped the KAT100 away and then the KPA100 and the
problem was still there. The basic K2 indicated transmit RF output between .2
to .4 watts. The power display would randomly wander between these figures on
all bands so there was no meaningful output. No receiver signals on any band.
D6 anode measures 8.25V and D7 anode is 0 V. I am only at the starting point
for signal tracing. It seems obvious something is down that is in common with
both receiver and transmitting circuits. This K2 has been completely updated
with all mods and firmware. It has all options installed including the
VCOSHLDKT. I hope I will be able to find the problem without having to remove
the 60 meter board. I have home brew rework eliminators, so I can remove the
options if necessary. All buttons and relays work as they should and the menu
works as it should. I would like to trouble shoot at the most likely place. I
suspect my problem is either in the PLL synth or VCO circuit. I think it would
be a stretch to find the problem in the bandpass filters or low pass filters.
A plan of attack would be welcome. Thanks. Roy Morris W4WFB

[Elecraft] W-1 Needs a Peak Hold function

2006-12-04 Thread k7hbg
Hi everybody.

My little W-1 has been getting a bit of a workout around here. I think
this the best piece of Elecraft test equipment yet!
An option that I'd really like to see would be a peak hold indication for
checking voice modulated output of my K2. Kind of a fast attack/ slow
decay. For those of us without a 'scope this would seem to be just the
ticket.
Just a little bit of program enhancement should do it.

RE: [Elecraft] 160M Dead on my K2

2006-12-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mark,

If you see the blips, then the relays should be getting voltage to the
coils.
Since the RANT works on 80 meters, your problem may be in the 160/80 meter
bandpass filter rather than the k160XV board itself (it may also be in the
VFO range select area too).

Check the VFO range select first - just because it is easy. Set the K2 to
1800 kHz and measure the frequency at TP1 (counter probe in TP1 and menu to
CAL FCTR) - it should be very close to 6715 kHz, if it is not, then check
capacitor C75 for proper value 470 pf (471) and good soldering.

Then check the bandpass filter additions C13 and C14 (1200 pf [122]). If
these are in place and relay K3 is working properly, you should have good
160 meter receive.

Once you have 160 meter receive through the RX ANT jack, then you can move
on to transmit. If it still does not work after successfully passing all
the above tests, look for the problem in the toroid leads on the K160RX
board.

That is all I can think of at the moment.

Re: [Elecraft] Solder weller tips

2006-12-04 Thread G. Beat

For Weller products:

I would not recommend a gun to build a Elecraft kit -- that uses printed
circuit boards.

The TCP series has been made for 40+ years and still in production (WTCPT
current model).
The PT tips for this model are interchangeable for all versions from
original Weller W-TCP/WTCPL (1966/1967) to present. Iron / station works on
the Curie principle (ferrous alloy plug at base of tip determines the
temperature that the tip will reach). OKI/Metcal based their design on
these Weller patents (but they use RF for heating).
No 'idiot' knob to get confused or have someone accidentally move -- built
for soldering production lines -- used by Grumman for Lunar Module and
Collins for S line and general rework stations (that is where I got my
first one surplus and learned how to repair them !)

Plentiful, easy to repair - good tip selection.

EC series ~ mid 1970s to 2002. The Electronic Control series was made for
25 years and discontinued in 2002. WES51 replaced it for an entry level
station (uses the same tips)

Surplus readily available. Repair on older models can be tricky - depending
upon model some repair parts can be more difficult to locate. The irons for
this series (EC1201 and 1302B) are still current Weller production - and
available.
Uses the ET series of tips -- which are also used with the WES51 entry
level station.

WES51 is Weller's current entry level station -- equivalent in Hakko is the
model 936-12

About same price range $85 to $100 depending on where you buy.

I have all styles currently W-TCP; WTCPN; WTCPS; WTCPT(2 in boxes); a
beautiful DEC1001 with 2 irons (from surface mount to boatanhor with that
station) -- just finished a 2 month refurbishment session. I have parts --
if you find a broken one - and almost all of the Tech Sheets (that are in my
catalog) for your DIY are on BAMA.

Re: [Elecraft] _slightly_ off-topic re: rf probe in the K2 kit

2006-12-04 Thread David C Dawson
Thanks, Don.
I was thinking of the other voltage probe, though this might be useful
too.
As the circuit is crystal controlled and internally adjusted I think the
frequency will be correct; it is the filters I need to adjust.

 David,

The spec'ed frequency of the K2 internal frequency counter is 40 MHz -
whether it will work at 50 MHz is one thing to be investigated. The probe
would have to be arranged with a ground to use it on a device external to
the K2 (the stock internal probe will not do the job).

What is the upper bandwidth of the RF probe one builds for the K2?
I wonder if it can reach six meters?
I would like to be able to peak a six meter QRP tranceiver I
  re-crystalled from a 49MHz walkie-talkie.
  Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: What Country is 4N5Y? And Why Don't I Hear AnyCWSignals?

2006-12-04 Thread Val

There is no SM since June 28th. 4N5Y QTH is in Serbia. I was also
confused - N1MM logger didn't recognize YT6T as Montenegro ( I downloaded
the latest version just before the contest ). Don't worry, the score
calculated by your logging program doesnt matter, when you send CABRILLO
log.

Sorry to go off-topic, but I worked 4N5Y with QRP CW on 80 meters in the
CQWW DX Contest, and I'm confused as to his official DXCC country.
  QRZ.com
lists his country as Serbia and Montenegro, my logging program says
just
Serbia, but the ARRL DXCC list (
  http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc/dxcclist.txt ) does not list 4N at
all.
Please tell me how and where I can find his official country for DXCC
purposes. Is it Serbia, Montenegro, or Serbia and Montenegro?

By the way, it's 2300 UTC on Dec. 4 and I can't hear any CW signals on
any
band on my K2. What's up with that? Did we just get hit with a solar
  flare
or something? I'm using an indoor dipole at a new QTH, and wondering
  whether it's working.

  Thanks and 73/72,
  Jeff
