[Elecraft] Re: Band Limits - MARS ?

2007-12-19 Thread g4zfe

Hello Eric,

Excellent news on the program to unlock TX. Thank you.

Is the program also able to lock bands? For example, I would like to
at some stage legally import my K3 into Thailand where 6m is not
allowed. I would need to disable 6m TX/RX on my K3 before handing the
radio over to the Thai authorities to check the radio.

Fred,

The 'opposite' TX INH topic has been discussed before (and confirmed..?) and
this was relevant to me as a Yaesu FT990 user. However earlier posts from
Eric claimed an amp keying loop is unnecessary with the K3/K2 and a modern
amp.

Yesterday I put K3 0145(!) on air with my Acom 1000 amp and can confirm (and
concur with Brendan Minish EI6IZ) that the K3 keys this modern amp perfectly
in full qsk with just the straight key out connection. Note also that the TX
INH feature is described under Transverter Control in the manual, not under
amp keying.

The K3 is a great radio; the problem for me now is my 30A power supply
sounds like a worn out vacuum cleaner when it kicks in - any suggestions for
a nice quiet p/s available in the UK...?

Also is there no easy way to reference earlier posts in the archives here?
Yahoo groups number their posts which makes cross referencing quick and easy
and something like that would be handy here (as above.)

[Elecraft] Re: Vol 44, Issue 34 EricVic open up k3 freq

2007-12-19 Thread alan
Hi Vic and all,

Eric is of course right that the guy who pressess the PTT
is responsible. On MoD (UK DoD) assignments I suspect
this caution may be of no consequence, but amateur rigs
used on non-amateur bands are unlikely to have been
declared as conforming to the various EC requirements for
use on those frequencies/that type of use.

Once outside amateur bands the ability of amateurs to self
build/modify ceases and transmitters must be covered by a
'declaration of conformity' for its (new) intended purpose.

This bit hard on Foundation licensees (M3s) in the UK
because they don't have the self-build privilege (other
than commercial kits) and could not use modified ex PMR
(private mobile radio) rigs. Ofcom recently relaxed,
allowing dealers to test and re-certify conformity for
amateur use.

Technically using a modified (includes software changes) K3
on non-amateur bands in the UK is a breach of the rules.
However in exclusive MoD bands, this MIGHT not be a
problem.

Regards 73 Alan.

[Elecraft] K3 and DX4WIN Rig Keying Procedure

2007-12-19 Thread Gary Bartlett VE1RGB

If you are like me and think that the only difference between COMM Port
and, say, Ripple, is that the former product is marketed to a better class
of drunk, then you probably need some hand-holding when getting logging
programs to perform the function of keying rigs in some predictable,
repeatable fashion.

With that standard in mind, here's one way of getting DX4WIN V7.03.16
to work with the K3 with the FW as of this date, at least on my ACER Aspire
3500 Laptop, for anyone who is thinking of running that program. No doubt
better procedures exist but they didn't surface when I did an enquiry on
here a couple of weeks ago. Lots of smarts on N1MM, though.

Use it at your own risk, but I don't think you can hurt anything.

there are libraries that allow that as well. It's important to make this small

Subject: [Pskten] PSK Signals

In the few days I've had the 30 meter antenna up, I have been able to
spend some time watching the capture of signals in PropnetPSK (PNP).
There
has been some discussion in the past about PNP not acquiring a signal
that
was quite strong. This discussion will also apply to YGPSK and just
about
every other PSK decoder that uses the PSKCORE.DLL as the Decoding
element.

PNP and the PSKCORE.DLL are quite finicky on signal quality and over
the
past few days I have observed a number of really terrible signals,
either
because they are completely overdriven or due to atmospheric
conditions.

If you look at a good PSK signal in the spectrum display instead of
the

waterfall and spread the display out, you will notice that a good PSK
signal has two signal peaks, approximately 31 Hz apart with a small
valley
in the center. A good signal lock-on will occur when the frequency
line
is between these two signal peaks. Any third order harmonic
distortion

will be reduced by at least 60db.

If the signal is overdriven, these third order products will be above
the
60 db attenuation and this is where problem can start. If you look
very
closely at an overdriven signal, you will see a mirror of the signal
in

the third order distortion product on either side of the main signal.
There will be 2 smaller peaks along with a valley. If this portion
of

the PSK signal is above the ambient noise floor, then the weak signal
properties of PSK will lock on to this signal and start decoding
because
it thinks it is a qualified PSK signal. Depending on the quality of
the

signal, it may or may not produce intelligence.

This is why it is imperative that we make sure our transmitters are
correctly adjusted for a good quality signal; rig power at something
less
than the 100% duty cycle rating of the radio and absolutely no ALC
showing
on the meter. The last test will be to have someone locally have a
listen
to the signal for quality. There are a couple of commercial 'PSK
Meters'

on the marker that will actually sample your transmitted signal and
automatically adjust the sound card gain to keep you signal clean and
pure. I do not have one of these and therefore do not have any first
hand
knowledge of these devices, but from the reports I have read, this
might
be a very good addition to the shack for PSK or other sound card
digital

modes.

Hi guys,

We have a second program in process that will allow you to set specific
band limits. We have an internal version of that in-house now for use
setting limits for special countries , like Thailand, but it needs some
sprucing up before release to the public.

At this time we're only doing these programs for Windows. We just don't
have the time to do everything for all operating systems. (We not that
big yet! :-) Since these are usually 'one-time run' programs, I think
this is reasonable. If we have time, we may do them for Mac in the future.

unlocking/locking of the US limits. If I take my K3 to a country which

It would be really helpful to have user-configurable frequency points
where the rig will emit a warning beep as the operator tunes through.
Nothing else, just a discreet warning.

For example, I can always use a reminder when crossing the edges of the
beacon bands. Another use would be to program a beep at the frequency
limits that might be written into the rules of a particular contest.

Since other people might have different frequencies of interest, or
might not want the facility at all, it would need to be
user-configurable.

Configuration could be as simple as:
1. Set menu item
2. Tune to a frequency
3. Press something to toggle beep on/off.

Obviously not urgent, but maybe worth considering for the longer term.

[Elecraft] K1 For Sale

2007-12-19 Thread Gixm Gixm
Hi Everyone,

I have a K1 for sale. I build it a couple years ago.
It is in excellent condition. This has to be the best
QRP rig around. I am keeping one with more features I
helped a friend build and got from his estate (SK), so
mine is surplus to my needs.

See photos online:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemssPageName=STRK:MESEX:ITitem=180196168194_trksid=p3984.cSELL.m315.lVI

Or see ebay Item number: 180196168194

I will never post any ebay junk here, except my own
personally built Elecraft radio.

Have a great day.

[Elecraft] K1 #2168, #2461 are ALIVE!

2007-12-19 Thread B. Scott Andersen

There has been a dearth of It's alive! messages
on the reflector from builders completing kits.
I thought I might address that. Here's one!

I completed TWO kits in November. K1 2168 was
a gift from Valentine's Day 06 and I only got
around to building it last month (Nov 07). I
had so much fun I decided to get it a baby
brother so K1 2461 was ordered and built also
in Nov 07. They're both alive and doing well.
They sound great!

K1 2168 - 40/30/20/17 + ATU + NB + tilt stand
K1 2461 - 80/15 + ATU + NB + tilt stand

Not content with that I returned to the
Elecraft order page and clicked a few more times.
Today another bundle of joy came today
courtesy UPS. It is still cold from being on the
truck!

K2 6295 in the box - QRP CW-only + NB + ATU + 160m

I have two four-day weekends coming up and
I think I know how I'll be spending them!

Previously built these little guys, too:
K2 4649 - QRP + SSB + ATU + NB + DSP + BAT + RS232C
KX1 753
K1 1460 -- sold (foolishly)

I know I always get a charge out of reading when
others get their new radios up-and-running. I
thought I'd share.

2007-12-19 Thread geoff allsup

OK, just saw NE1RD's message: *There has been a dearth of It's alive! messages

So, a progress report on a K2 that I've had sitting on a shelf in the
box since my birthday this past April. I've completed through the first
set of power on tests - everything AOK! Currently working on RF Board
Assembly, Part II - wow, there are a lot of capacitors! With any
luck, I hope to be reporting a completed basic QRP K2 w/160M option over
the Christmas holidays. Would love to operate it during SKN!

[Elecraft] CB band TX? - I'm shocked!

2007-12-19 Thread Ken Kopp

Eric's reply (below) reads as if the K3 will TX in the 27 mHz
CB band as built. Surely no self-respecting Elecraft owner
would soil his radio by transmitting in the CB band! The
radio should self-destruct if a user attempted to transmit
there.

It should -always- block CB band transmit. I don't know of a
legitimate reason for a K3 to transmit on 27 Mhz anywhere
in the world.

[Elecraft] List Membership Second Time Around

2007-12-19 Thread epalmer
Hello everyone. Sorry to take up bandwidth but maybe someone can help my
mentally limited brain understand the excessive bounce notices and what
they imply.

A few months back I kept getting excessive bounce notices and had to keep
re-enabling my membership. Eventually the membership was cancelled. So
when I see these notices what should I be doing or not doing. I sent an

there is pretty darn busy.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] List Membership Second Time Around

2007-12-19 Thread David F. Reed

Ed,

without seeing the full header,most of us would only be able to guess;
with the full header of the bounce messages, some of us could tell you
what happened.

So, by way of guessing, here goes:

when a list sends you a message, it gets bounced for one of several
reasons; that your ISP is ignoring them (not accepting messages),
that someone in the loop (say, for example you use [EMAIL PROTECTED]
as an email address, and it merely forwards email to whatever
address you give it to do that) could be down, or having trouble
relaying to you, or there could be a DNS (Domain Name Service that
converts the name to an I. P. address) failure for a variety of
   reasons.

When that happens, some lists will unsubscribe you (a good practice
   to reduce dead traffic).

So the headers contain the information of where and what went wrong,
   which could help.

Sometimes an ISP tries to help you by counting all kinds of stuff
as SPAM, some correctly and some not so correctly.

The problem was not likely at Elecraft, but more likely something
with your ISP, whom you should be able to contact for help, though
typically they are not much help in my experience, which is why some
of us end up learning this stuff in the school of hard knocks.

Re: [Elecraft] No Elecraft List

2007-12-19 Thread Robert Brigham
I have had a similar experience.
Recently Yahoo started dumping half my Elecraft emails
into the Spam bucket for no apparent reason. As I go
through and mark them individually as NOT SPAM Yahoo
is starting to let them into my regular In Box. I have
got it down to losing only a quarter of the Elecraft
posts to the SPAM bucket. Maybe things will be back
to normal by year's end. Or maybe I could fix it
faster with Elecraft Mojo by ordering a K3...;-)

I have a mint KX1 with the above options. It has less than 20 hours of

There is also a small wall-wart that I use with the KX1 that fits into

willing to sell for $425 by certified check or Paypal. Can be picked up

cost.

I don't see a problem with CB transmit capabilities. In fact, I think
it should be configurable by the end user. Let me explain.

Recently our county has been getting its act together in regards to
Emcomm, so we've been doing drills and educational programs at
meetings. As an amateur, you need to be prepared to communicate on
non-ham frequencies, like FRS or CB. Sometimes in a disaster situation
you may need to communicate with non-hams who are only equipped with FRS
or CB. One prime example of this in a drill we did was a trucker coming
in to deliver supplies to a shelter. We needed to talk in the driver
to the shelter over CB.

As far as soiling your K3, look at it this way; you'll probably have
the sweetest, cleanest sounding AM signal on the CB band :-) Yea, I
know it's not type accepted for use in CB/Part 95, but neither are the
thousands of amplifiers and specially tuned chrome monsters you see on
eBay each day. Also, any CBer wanting a hot signal isn't going to buy
an Elecraft K3. For much less money they can buy one of those garbage
rigs and a six pill amp with more so-called talk power.

All my rigs are modified for DC to daylight transmit. Do I ever use
it? No, but it's good to know that if I'm ever put in the situation I
can fire up communications on most any band in a heartbeat. Sure, I can
wreak havoc on any band as well with my equipment and its expanded
functionality, but that's why we're licensed amateurs.we know not to
do that stuff and we have the know how and motivation to use our powers
for good, not evil

[Elecraft] K3 and Yaesu amp - report

2007-12-19 Thread cloud runner
Built up a cable to link the ACC jack of the K3, and spefically, Band0-3,
mapped to Band Data A-D on my Yaesu FL7000 auto-tune, auto-band change
amplifier. The KIO needs to be placed in NOR, which is its default. The K3
switches the FL7000 flawlessly. Since I have not seen anything on this posted,
the success may be of interest to others. Thank you to Joe, W4TV, who assured
me that this should work without further ado, and it did.

The TX INHibit of the Yaesu and that of the K3 are in reverse from one another.
The Yaesu switches to ground when it is ready. The K3 expects being grounded
to mean don't transmit.

I think a simple transistor circuit using power from the 13.5 volt source on
the Yaesu amp's lines could be done to accomplish this. I have heard that it
is sufficient and simple enough to instruct the K3 to do a PTT delay of 5 or 10
ms, but I can not see how to do that. Anyone know?

Fred - kt5x

[Elecraft] Is there a way to use keyer without transmitting?

2007-12-19 Thread Dick Roth KA1OZ

In anticipation of receiving my K3 sometime this spring (I only just

never used an electronic keyer or bug, for that matter. I haven't been

Is there a way to use the keyer in the radio to learn and practice

[Elecraft] KX1 FS/Low Output

2007-12-19 Thread Mike Fitzgibbon

Ken...
You may have the same problem I had...wound the toroids too tight
and didn't have the windings spread out far enough on the low-pass
output filters...it made a huge difference on my rig. Try spreading the
windings out or just re-wind them so that the windings are spaced out
more...it's easy to get them too tight and too bunched up together...the
windings need to be spread W A Y out...just a design thing you
understand...

2007-12-19 Thread KBG Luxford
There has been at least one case of emergency in the Oz outback where
the ability to transmit on a CB frequency by a ham has brought a welcome
response.

The local Radio Frequency Authority took a sensible attitude. A ham rig
is not type approved for the CB frequency, but the Department
apparently took the view that the regulations never envisioned that type
of emergency need, and that the preservation of life was paramount.

Yes, there's a TX TEST mode that is just like transmitting, except

[Elecraft] K3 accessories construction order

2007-12-19 Thread Forrest Hudspeth
Gentlemen,

I have been reading some of the construction comments of the existing K3
owners and note that they have had to disassemble previously constructed
pieces to install items to the base radio, e.g. the KPA100 assembly. There
were also some comments on the toll taken on the painted finish by
installing and removing screws several times to perform the additions and
the possibility of other scratches and marks due to the repeated
construction/deconstruction.

Is there a master assembly order roadmap for the radio listed anywhere so
you know when to stop the current assembly at a certain point and add an
accessory based on the accessories you purchased? Thank you.

[Elecraft] Base for KXPD1 Paddle

2007-12-19 Thread Ed G

Hello,
I have a few of these paddle bases for the KXPD1 left, so those
folks who already own a KXPD1 can use it as a regular desktop paddle. This
base allows you to mount the KXPD1 paddle in a conventional way, and connect
it to your favorite rig or keyer. The base is 3 inches square, and black
powdercoated. The mounting bracket is gray, so the colors match Elecraft
rigs. Weight is about a pound and a half, and the base comes with very
sticky rubber feet so the whole assembly stays put. Kit also comes with
cable and hardware; you must already have the KXPD1! I am selling the kit
for $45 plus $5. shipping. I have a couple photos available:

[Elecraft] CB band TX? - I'm shocked!

2007-12-19 Thread Ken Kopp

Eric, please read your message (below), not for what you
probably meant to say, but for what the words actually say.

It tells the reader that high power TX in the CB band is
always blocked, and doesn't say TX in the CB band is blocked.
Your wording clearly indicates that it only blocks high power TX
in the CB band.

I'm guilty of taking your posting literally, and from reading the reply
postings I'm not the only one who assumes the K3 will transmit on
27 mHz.

After the fact, I -DID- check mine ... it doesn't. (:-))

73! Ken Kopp - K0PP

Hi Ken - My email said exactly the opposite :-) The K3 -always- blocks
TX in the CB band (except out the 0 dBm transverter port.)

[Elecraft] K3: German Tank Problem - remix

2007-12-19 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
Oh boy...what a mess.

So now we have tiny K3 serial numbers showing up as being just
received (those are the K3s ordered assembled?). Additionally, these
are still those that were placed with deposits. We also know that
orders from May 2 (at least) that were placed w/o deposits are
scheduled (at least some of them) for shipment in Jan 2008.

Will kits in run #1 w/o a deposit go out before non-kits in run#1 also
w/o a deposit or will they be mixed?

Being on vacation, I now have all this opportunity to ponder such things.

My apologies to those who are sick of delivery and run size

Re: [Elecraft] CB band TX? - I'm shocked!

2007-12-19 Thread Goody K3NG
I'm not in favor of breaking the law, but I think the chances of running
into the FCC today are slim to none. If you don't identify with your
ham callsign while using a ham rig on FRS or CB frequencies, it's
unlikely anyone, even the FCC will know a difference, or even care. The
FCC can't even enforce Part 95 today, except for the occasional bust of
Joe's Radio Shop selling souped up CBs and amps. And if you look at
their recent creative interpretation of harmful interference in Part
15 in regards to BPL it would appear that the FCC is taking a more
liberal approach to the rules. Today's FCC is more concerned with Janet
Jackson and figuring out how to maintain telco monopolies, but I digress
:-) I think the only time the FCC would ever know about an occurrence
of a ham using a ham rig out of band during an emergency would be if
another ham reported them to the FCC. One would have to ask what the
true motives are of someone doing this.

I do carry an FRS and CB radio in my communications go kit, but if
either of them don't work for any reason during an event, I won't
hesitate to use one of my ham rigs. If the FCC has lost its last
vestige of common sense and wants to fine me, I'll turn in my license as
it's no longer worth my time and effort to volunteer my services.

I'm disappointed the K3 won't transmit on its entire receive range.
We're amateur radio operators, not toddlers trying to get into the
cabinet under the sink.

RE: [Elecraft] CB band TX? - I'm shocked!

2007-12-19 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Here on the Oregon coast where hurricane force winds are a regular event
several times each winter, our community emergency team relies on Amateur
radio, CB and Family Radio for communications.

However, I'd not want to combine them into one rig. That would prevent
simultaneous use by several people, some of whom may not be Ham licensees.
The family radio units provide family-to-family communications throughout
our community of between 50 and 100 homes. The range - a few houses in each
direction in this heavily wooded area a few hundred feet from the Pacific
Ocean - is perfect to avoid excessive QRM and confusion but enough to check
on neighbors and relay a call for help if needed. Those same radios take to
the streets in the hands of members of the community take to guide fire,
ambulance or other emergency vehicles to their destination along our winding
roads at any time, or if we're cut off to road access and have an emergency,
to coordinate setting up the markers for Coast Guard helicopter landing
area. CB units in vehicles back up the family radios if more range.

My HF and VHF Ham rigs are an essential back up in case all phone service is
lost. The Ham rigs focus on that need, leaving CB and family radio units for
local chores.

Serving alongside non-ham neighbors with their CBs and family radios gives
me a chance to show off Ham radio to new recruits who are already interested
in communications technology.

It is the tendency these days for radio amateurs of all nations to
self-regulate. So let us do just that and use equipment which is legal.
A CB transceiver can be bought for just a few $, so let's act
responsibly and keep the hobbies separate without complicating the issue

impart this pearl of wisdom:

In a recent message Goody K3NG [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes
I'm not in favor of breaking the law, but I think the chances of
running into the FCC today are slim to none. If you don't identify
with your ham callsign while using a ham rig on FRS or CB frequencies,
it's unlikely anyone, even the FCC will know a difference, or even care.

It is the tendency these days for radio amateurs of all nations to
self-regulate. So let us do just that and use equipment which is legal.
A CB transceiver can be bought for just a few $, so let's act
responsibly and keep the hobbies separate without complicating the issue
any further. It is fortunate that the CB bands can be disabled in K3
firmware.

[Elecraft] Getting the K3 type approved (like the K2) for Thailand

2007-12-19 Thread Chris Wagner
Hi Folks,
There are others way up front in the queue: I planned to be the one to
open the door for future K3 buyers, but some OM will be there first.
The K2 is on the list of approved transceivers, So let's get the K3 on
that list asap, too!
By mistake, I deleted the list with the post from a HS0 op about this
about 2 months ago. So let's hope we hear who is gonna be the first K3
user in Thailand! Hopefully, Rich Hs0zgz can speed up the import of
his K3 by the time he wants to bring it over. ** to be honest, I hate
the idea of handing the K3 over and have it tested for weeks. Nice
job: playing with radios and getting paid for it; the K3 will
mysteriously take a lot longer... :P

Or better yet a list of those that were fined or sanction for attempting to

Based on my own experience with regulators and enforcers on federal, state and
local levels, the phrase No good deed goes unpunished comes to mind.

2007-12-19 Thread dj7mgq

Hi Michael,

wondering if there is any RF design considerations that would restrict
or limit transmission within its operating frequencies extremes.

The bandpasses, I would assume. They appear to be fairly narrow.
