I can attempt to contact your developer to see if they have an updated version. What software you using? [Elecraft] Re: K3 6 Meter Preamp
I found that the K3, as built, was a bit better on 6 meters than either my Pro III or TS-2000x. (A/B/C switching) I've since sold both of those radios. I bought a 6 meter preamp from High Sierra Microwave. It has about the same specs as the ARR P50VDG mentioned on here and the Elecraft offering. I use low band receiving antennas and merely switch them to the RX In via a patch panel. I'll use RX Out to the 6 meter preamp and just patch it in the same way when I'm on 6 meters. There aren't many times when I have to switch from 160 or 80 CW to 6 meters so a patch panel works just fine. 73, Dave N8AG http://www.hsmicrowave.com/html/amateur_lna.htm ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Beta firmware rev. 2.57 -- SSB PWR control, SPLIT in diversity mode, etc.
K3 beta-test firmware revision 2.57 (with DSP rev 1.94) is now available. This is a major release. Some recent changes have had only limited testing, but we wanted to get it out in time for this weekend's contest. If you have any difficulty, you can easily revert back to the last production version (2.46). Be sure to use the latest revision of K3 Utility to do the downloads. Please send any problem reports to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For instructions on how to load beta firmware, please see: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm Highlights: * SSB power control improved (no jumps in power while rotating the PWR control during transmit; no upward spike when crossing the 12-W boundary; SSB drive level not affected by tapping A/B, changing modes, or doing an ATU TUNE. (NOTE: This doesn't address all issues with voice peaks; we have further work to do on ALC. Also, a band change or memory recall still reinitializes the SSB drive level. We're working on that.) * SPLIT operation is now possible in diversity mode (requires sub receiver). There are several user-interface changes related to this; please review the release notes below carefully. Most noticeably, in diversity mode VFO A still controls both receivers but the VFO B frequency remains fully independent. * First tap of A>B copies mode, if required (avoids accidental cross-mode SPLIT) * All known issues with CW/DATA message buffers fixed, including lost characters during chaining * Major improvements to CW-to-PSK31 operation -- faster transmit, and no erroneous characters sent when using the keyer paddle * Many new or improved remote-control commands for developers Other details appear below. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * MCU 2.57, 10-24-2008 Major changes and new features: * SSB POWER CONTROL IMPROVEMENTS: (1) No jumps in power while rotating PWR control during transmit. (2) No upward spike when crossing QRP/QRO boundary. (3) No loss of SSB TX drive level when tapping A/B, changing modes, or doing an ATU TUNE. (4) These improvements may also lessen the effect of “spiking” external amplifiers, but further work on the ALC routine is planned. Note: The SSB drive does still get reinitialized to match the CW level if you do a TUNE (this is desirable). This also happens if you change bands or recall a memory (that will be fixed in the next release). * FIRST A>B TAP COPIES MODE (if VFO A and B modes are different). This should greatly reduce the chance of having VFO B in the wrong mode when the operator later goes into SPLIT. (Those who want to do cross-mode split can still set up VFO B differently using BSET mode, and should avoid A>B.) Once the VFO modes are the same, operation of A>B is the same as before: A single tap copies only the frequency, while a second tap copies everything. * PSK31 (PSK D MODE) TRANSMIT IMPROVEMENTS: Eliminated erroneous characters during CW-to-PSK31 transmit when using the keyer paddle. Also greatly improved PSK31 transmit speed by removing all extraneous “zeros” from the data stream. * MARS operation now possible on 40 m up to 7550 kHz. VFO Linking, Sub RX, Diversity Mode, and SPLIT: * SPLIT CAN BE USED IN DIVERSITY MODE: During SPLIT, VFO B is only the transmit frequency. VFO A controls both receivers. So you now have a choice when using SPLIT with the sub receiver: diversity receive, or listening to both your RX (main) and TX (sub) frequencies simultaneously. Also see BSET note below. * VFO A-B LINKING: This is now indicated by slowly flashing the VFO B kHz decimal point. * A/B and REV CAN NOW BE USED IN DIVERSITY MODE. In both cases, the VFOs are swapped, allowing you to listen in diversity mode on VFO B’s frequency. * BSET IN DIVERSITY MODE: If you use BSET in diversity mode, you’ll now hear the main RX in the left ear and sub RX in the right. This is useful when using SPLIT with diversity, as it allows you to override diversity mode temporarily and listen to both your RX and TX frequencies. * VFO B NOT LOCKED WHEN LINKED TO VFO A: This means the VFOs can be linked but at different frequencies. A fixed offset can be established using VFO B, and will be maintained as you tune VFO A. * VFOs NOT LINKED IN DIVERSITY MODE: VFO A is used to update both synthesizers (main and sub), but VFO B is now free to be used as a SPLIT TX frequency (see below). In DIVERSITY mode, the VFO A kHz decimal point slowly flashes, as before. Miscellaneous: * MESSAGE PLAY FIXES: There were a few issues with CW and DATA message buffer playback, including occasional truncated characters when chaining in CW mode, and inconsistent behavior when chaining. * MORE ACCURATE AM-MODE POWER LEVEL. Also slightly higher modulation percentage. * INTERNAL 2-TONE TEST GENERATOR now works with 2.7 as well as 2.8 kHz crystal filters, and the tones are now correct when used with both LSB and USB. * KEY OUT disabled sooner on power-up: Previously, KEY OUT was active for about 3 to 4 seconds on
Re: [Elecraft] KPA 100 Low power on 160M
Andrew, If you cannot get at least 10 watts out of the base K2 over all the 160 meter band you have a problem in either the 160/80 meter bandpass filter or the 160m low pass filter. I encourage you to look there first. You will likely have to compromise the bandpass filter settings between 160 and 80 meters. Set the filter inductors midway between the peak at 3700 kHz and 1850 kHz for your initial trial and make slight adjustments from there. Check the coupling inductor to be certin it is the right value - your report indicates that the bandpass filter may be more narrow than normal. That being said, low power combined with high current warnings do indicate a problem with the low pass filter for that band - be certain the capacitors are the correct value and the number of turns on the toroids are correct. If you had not already discovered, the limited power out of the base K2 is what is likely causing the reduce power from the KPA100. 73, Don W3FPR [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: HI, I have just fitted the DSP board and it works fine, on putting the K2 back together, I fond that 160M will not go above 50 Watts and I get a high current warning, All other bands are 111 Watts no problem. I am using Rohde & Schwarz power probe and a 40dB attenuator, to the match is close to 50 OHMS. I have also used my bird through line and get the same results. I suspected the band pass filter in the KPA 100, I did find what looked a poor joint on L1, but re soldering has not cured the problem. I do not like disturbing the PCB and power transistor mounts so need to pinpoint quickly. In QRP mode the K2 works fine. ( 6 Watts 1800 to 2.000 with 11 watts at 1900 I have never had 10 Watts + on this band). I will sweep the low pass filter tonight, if I find this in order, I will then connect the Watt meter directly to input to the low pass filter and see if everything is fine at this point. Has any one had this before and can give some pointers it would be appreciated? The SWR circuit gives 1:1 into the dummy load so is metering correctly. Has anyone know C2A, C2B, C2C, C2C, C2D, or CDE to fail or indeed L1 and L2 73 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K3 and 6 Metres - PR6 or XV50?
The idea of using a 6 meter transverter with a rig that has already 6 m... It's unbelievable. I think that Elecraft listens to their customers. Never seen a company that does so well at this point. Probably most customers wanted high dynamic range in the HF range and excellent selectivity (including me). Very few wanted a low MDS on 6m. Personally I never made one single QSO on 6m until I got the K3, so I was not even aware of this item. I have been reading the reflector for quite a while because I built a K2 in the past. When talking/fantasizing about a successor for the K2, it was always about HF performance and well layed out features for DX-ers and contesters. So, maybe we forgot to mention that on VHF we might need a lower MDS? Cheer up guys, the next generation Elecraft transceiver will certainly have a lower MDS on VHF and a high dynamic range as well. Elecraft always listens to their customers. 73, Arie PA3A ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. We are trying to use a second external receiver with the K3 by connecting the RX ant out jack to the second receiver antenna input. If you are trying to share the receive path so that the K3 receiver and the external receiver are active simultaneously, you need a splitter. The input to the splitter comes from the KXV3 Rx OUT connector. Re: [Elecraft] K3: TX audio setup
Franki, Were you able to fix your SSB audio problem? One area you might want to check is what you have the SSB filter offset set for. If you have the 2.8 kHz filter, this offset should be zero. If it is the 2.7 kHz filter, this offset is usually in the -0.80 to -.90 , with most set for -.85. What is your SSB filter offset set to in the K3 menu?. If it is incorrect, that will cause the muffled audio reports. 73, Eric WA6HHQ Franki ON5ZO wrote: Is there any K3 user that can give me some advice? RE: [Elecraft] K3 and 6 Metres - PR6 or XV50?
Words from Wayne about using an XV50 and the K3 that will appear in a soon-to-be-released application note, "Using the K3 with Elecraft XV Transverters": "Those who wish to use an XV50 with the K3 may do so, even though the K3 includes six meters. For example, your antenna configuration and other station interconnections may favor a separate transverter on this band. "Also note that the XV50 has a better 6-meter MDS than the stock K3, because the K3 has been optimized for high dynamic range rather than for best sensitivity. However, a very low-noise preamp is available for the K3: the Elecraft PR6. This unit plugs directly into the RX ANT IN/OUT jacks on the K3 (requires the KXV3 option)." Ron AC7AC -Original Message- I have been following the recent threads about the K3 on 6 metres and have a question (actually two questions), please. Is it possible to use the K3 with the Elecraft XV50 transverter? If so, how does the performance of the K3's receiver on 6m compare with a K3 using the new PR6 pre-amplifier? I have a XV50 transverter that I was using with a K2 to enable me to be QRV on 6m, and intended selling it when I got my K3 to finance the purchase of a XV144 transverter to use with the K3. Would I now do better to keep the XV50, or sell it as planned and buy the PR6 pre- amplifier, to best improve my K3's 6m performance? The 1/8 inch tip to XLR pin 2 and sleeve > to XLR pin 1. The rear panel mic input does not ground the sleeve of the 1/8" (3.5mm) jack - it is raised by an RF choke. You will want to use twisted pair wire with pin 2 of the XLR connected to the tip of the 1/8" plug and pin 3 of the XLR connected to the sleeve. If you use shielded cable, connect the shield to pin 1 of the XLR and bring it out as a flying lead to the ground terminal on the K3's rear panel. Do not jumper pins 1 and 3 of the XLR unless the "low side" of the mic input is connected DIRECTLY to ground/chassis. Doing so will add hum and noise to the input signal (the "pin 1 problem"). > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ron Kenwood > Sent: Friday, October 24, 2008 2:41 AM > To: Elecraft > Subject: [Elecraft] XLR microphone to K3 wiring > > > I want to connect a mic with a 3 pin XLR connector on its > cable end to > the rear panel of my K3. [Elecraft] GORC Iditarod Challenge 2009 (GIC-2009)
Hello all, Registration for the GIC 2009 is closed and it looks like we have twenty-nine GIC 2009 Mushers for the November 1st start. Seven are strictly qrp while the rest are running 25w to 100w. Mushers come from USA, Alaska, Ireland, England, France, Bulgaria and Greenland. It should be a FUN mush around the globe! If you hear a GIC Musher on the air, please give him or her a call. Yes we have one Alaskan operator who is a female musher! To all non-mushers, please remember that a GIC Musher may only contact hams in the country he or she is at on the course. So if a musher is calling Canada only, all others don't count as points, but he or she may contact anyone for qsl purposes etc. Here's the GIC 2009 Course: USA, Canada, Alaska, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Greenland For additional information about this unique event click on the link below. http://www.wa3wsj.org/GORC_Iditraod2009.html 72/73, Ed, WA3WSJ GORC #001 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3: how to set up with CT 10 DOS?
OK...I admit it. I have used computer logging since day one, but I have never set up the rig to talk with the computer. I need help!! I am using CT 10 (DOS version). I presume that I need to use the connector labeled RS232 on the K3 (yes/no)? What baud rate is it? On the computer... I have an old machine running DOS (CT10). It is a pentium 1. I see two connectors on the back of the computer that are DB9s...same as the K3. They both have the same "symbol" above the connector, so I am guessing that they are each the same. Is that what I connect to? Which one? In the program CT, it asks me which COM port to put Radio 1 on. How do I tell? CT also wants me to set the baud rate. Again, how do I know what baud rate to use? What else do I need to know? Please reply directly to me at this email address. [Elecraft] Re: KAT100 affecting power output
Hi Bill. I don't have the KAT100, but those values look typical for antenna tuners that are internal to a rig. Because of size constraints, they tend to be a bit lossier than external tuners, although all tuners have some loss, which varies with band. I prefer external tuners for the simple reasons that they can be heftier (handle 1500W), can be used with all the rigs in the shack, can be used with or without the amplifier on and can be placed after the wattmeter, which is the best place for them. Internal tuners are great for portable operation, although I didn't get one this time because I use a K2 for remote ops. 73, Larry N8LP Date: Thu, 23 Oct 2008 17:44:00 -0700 (PDT) From: NZ0T <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KAT100 affecting power output To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Was it something I said? Re: [Elecraft] K3 and 6 Metres - PR6 or XV50?
Yes of course it is possible. The K3 may object to there being two 50MHz bands but you can always call it something else to get around that. The K3 has no idea what the transverter frequency is besides what you tell it. The performance will probably be worse, for exactly the same reasons the K3 is a single conversion architecture. What you could do is convert the XV50 to 4m or sell it to someone else. Do you really need a pre-amp for 6m? [Elecraft] K3, external speakers and an HF amp.
I use an external speaker on my K3. (Sounds Sweet speaker switch between radios via an iplus by W2IHY) I don't us an amp with the K3 but I do use an amp with my other radios. (Orion II, Omni VII, Jupiter) I do sometimes get a little RF into my small stereo speaker system of which I use to listen to TV or to commercial FM music. I do not see any other RF issues in my ham station. Reading the response from OE6KYG it appears that I could stand the chance of taking out the audio amp in my K3. Is this correct??? [Elecraft] KPA 100 Low power on 160M
HI, I have just fitted the DSP board and it works fine, on putting the K2 back together, I fond that 160M will not go above 50 Watts and I get a high current warning, All other bands are 111 Watts no problem. Has anyone know C2A, C2B, C2C, C2C, C2D, or CDE to fail or indeed L1 and L2 73 Andrew _ Check your Email accounts at http://www.MyEmail.com Login from home, work, school. Re: [Elecraft] K2 # 6444 soldering problem
Hello Alan, When I purchased my soldering station I also bought a needle point tip for it. When I put my K2 together I also didn't get enough solder on pin 1 U1. I changed the tip in my soldering iron to the needle tip and actually stuck it in the pin 1 socket to reheat the solder. The needle point tip is smaller in diameter than the the actual pin on the chip so didn't have a problem with melting plastic. I think Elecraft themselves may have inadvertently helped to feed the impression that the K3 was below par on 6m by rushing out an accessory preamp that was not announced at the time of the K3 launch, even ahead of accessories that were announced then such as the voice recorder. I have even had the opinion expressed to me privately that since the preamp was "necessary" Elecraft ought to be providing it free of charge to existing customers! Therefore I make no apology for raising this matter. I hope that others have found the ensuing thread informative and ultimately reassuring that the external preamp is only necessary for those who require the ultimate performance - just as with any other transceiver. I believe the K3 would not be as good as it is today if the only feedback Elecraft got from its customers was fanboy adulation. - Julian, G4ILO. [Elecraft] Re: 6m Preamp and other options
Hi all, The reason I love Elecraft so much is that they give me options. With the K3 I get a fantastic radio with 6m included. On a personal note, I use 6m but not as a main band. I want a radio that does everything. Now if the 6m preamp was built into the radio, that would increase the cost of the basic unit, making it more expensive for me. I love the fact that I can buy a basic radio and add to it as time goes by. Even with all the 'extras' it still comes in cheaper than *any* of the other radios in its class :) From my point of view, I am happy to add the performance where I need it and currently 6m is not a priority for me, so why should I pay for it until I am ready? Unless I am mistaken (and it has been known :) ), all the figures for the receiver, including 6m were published right at the beginning. The preamp is less than the price of a run of decent feeder to the 6m aerial which I personally think is cheap but of course YMMV. Please Elecraft, keep giving me options and keep the cost of the basic radio down. I can add the options later. 73 Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC DX Cluster Member RSGB, GQRP K2 #4044 |K3 #455 http://www.amateurradiotraining.org ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
