Re: [Elecraft] K-3 Headphone Impedance (was Pro Set Elite)
The one place impedance might be important is with regard to frequency response. Some of the early K3 headphone circuits has smaller value coupling capacitors than the current production. With low impedance (< 16 Ohms) headphones the low value coupling capacitors resulted in a low frequency roll off that bothers some operators. I like the CM-500 and the *old* Heil Pro Set with 200 Ohm headsets for that reason. However, the my Heil is gone ... the mic housing broke and Heil would not sell repair parts (more specifically they wanted as much for the repair parts as it would have cost to buy a new Pro Set HC-5!). I bought two x CM-500 for less than one Pro Set. 73, ... [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for August 14th & 15th, 2011
Good Evening, There was a little noise but the stations I heard were quite loud. Except for Fred. Then he tuned and blasted in. I missed the explanation since my ears were still ringing but found out he was running 500 watts from his K3. Once again weather reports were of much warmer weather than I am having. I read about a year without a summer but now I have lived one. While the rest of the US and Canada have had a heat wave I have had chilly to down right cold weather. So I built a greenhouse to get some vegetables to eat during the fall. Even though the season is short it is normally good enough for peas, beans, and lettuce. For peppers and corn I need the hothouse. Propagation was not great on 40 meters once again. While trying to hear Phil, who should have been a fair contact from Oregon, I decided to move the forty meter net later in the day by one hour. So next week it will be at 0100z instead of z. Hopefully the band will wake up to a wider area before that time. I'll post it again next week during my announcement but I wanted folks to know beforehand that they may have a much better chance of checking in rather than the bust it has been the last few months. The net times will change again when we go through the Daylight Savings time change again later in the year. On to the lists => On 14050 kHz at 2200z: W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457 K6DGW - Fred - CA - K3 - 642 AC5P - Mike - OK - K3 - 2170 K1THP - Dave - CT - K3 - 686 On 7045.5 kHz at z: K6DGW - Fred - CA - K3 - 642 K6PJV - Dale - CA - K3 - 1183 NS7P - Phil - OR - K3 - 1826 I hope the time change allows more folks to check in to the second net. Only better propagation will help the twenty meter net and the sun is currently blank. Like my lack of summer this solar cycle is lacking the punch of a solar maximum. I remember listening to shortwave as the sun was sliding off its peak in 1959. I was reading about IGY which had happened only a couple years before and found out much about the geophysical properties of earth. A lot more exciting than reading my dad's metallurgy textbooks :) I was probably the only kid in first grade who could spell molybdenum and manganese. The history of the metals were fun but then you got into the crystallography of them which put me to sleep. It took a few years to develop a taste for those parts of his texts. Until next week stay well, 73, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] K3 abruptly shuts off during CW transmission
The going back to the "last saved" frequency is a dead giveaway that the power has been EXTERNALLY removed or glitched without the benefit of manual power off (which allows K3 to go through all its "save stuff" shutdown routines). This will bring you up on the previous frequency. If the previous operation was a different mode, it will go to that mode as well. Don't let the lack of an obvious connection to RIT off get you onto a tangent. Fix the problem with the power wiring or power supply and see what is left afterwards. You may never be able to explain why it happened with RIT. I could guess that turning on RIT causes a spike of K3 CPU power consumption to do all the processing crap needed to turn on RIT, and is the straw that broke the camel's back. But I don't know that, and it doesn't matter. The power problem could be those power pins (that are now gold anodized) going bad. You can read about that problem on the Elecraft site. 73, Guy. Thanks to Doug, Jim, Jim, Dick (and anyone who I did not mention) for your advice. I am going with the P3 for now. Leaving cost aside, it seems to be the best choice for my use. It would work well for a while then cut out under load intermittently. The problem was a wire connected to the circuit board that was making mechanical contact, but had never be soldered. After soldering the wire, I checked all the other solder connections and touched up a couple that looked marginal. All has been well since. [Elecraft] K-3 Headphone Impedance (was Pro Set Elite)
Is it important to chose a headphone impedance close to what the K3 would like to see? For example, Don recommended the Yamaha CM500 which, according to the website, has a headphone impedance of 120 ohms; other headphone impedances seem to run from around 32 ohms (the Yamaha RH2C) to several hundreds of ohms. Is headphone impedance a critical factor in choosing your headphones? The more recent K3s (SN 3626 and above) contain the upgraded DSP board which has the audio Low Pass filter to roll off the AF response above 4 kHz installed. If you have an earlier K3, you can do the DSP board swap, or install the Low Pass Filter board to your existing K3 DSP board. You will find less expensive alternatives to the Heil headset in computer headsets and in the much acclaimed (here on this reflector) Yamaha CM500. I just purchased the CM500 from Sweetwater Sound for $29.95 With free shipping) - it was a demo unit at half the normal price. [Elecraft] K3 abruptly shuts off during CW transmission
After nearly two years of trouble free operation, I have developed a repeatable problem. While transmitting on 40 meter CW on my usual antenna the K3 suddenly shuts down. When I repower it, it comes back up fine, but has shifted frequency by about 1.5 kHz. This is occuring during relatively short transmissions. Power was at 100 watts and swr was about 1.5:1. I tried turning power down to 75 watts and it repeated. I then switched to a dummy load and it happens again; as I said it is definitely repeatable. I even updated the firmware, no joy! Any thoughts. Re: [Elecraft] [k3] dvr playback question
It is absolutely pointless to play recorded audio back to the station IF you are trying to show him how good or bad his/her audio is. The amount of change in the signal quality between RX and Tx in your own transceiver is more than enough to alter the sent audio. Even going to the effort of centering your TxEQ and RxEQ will not enable you to transmit a true representation of the transmitted audio from the 'other' station. It can of course let the sending station know how strong his signal at your station? I have heard quite a few stations use various radios and gadgets to play on-air recorded audio and I have yet to hear one that was a good representation of the original audio. [Elecraft] KPA500 hum
Hi I see this has been mentioned before - but my KPA500 was pretty quiet when I first got it (plugged in - but not 'ON') Now - sometimes - it has a pretty loud hum while 'OFF' - I turned the power switch at back on / off a couple of times - and it quieted down.. after a couple of minutes it started humming again at what I consider is an objectionable level, stopped for a minute - now humming again. Just listening to 20 meters, nothing else going on.. Any suggestions? ( I have turned the back power switch 'OFF' for the moment - but that is quite inconvenient) thanks 73 John VE3NFK -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-hum-tp6685742p6685742.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Request for suggestions for my next K3 addition.
I use both the P3 and second rx but to be honest feel the P3 is the most useful of the two options. With ST0R there were so many people calling them from all over the world that it was often difficult to find the station he was responding to and when he did there was no guarantee that the next station would be in the same immediate frequency range. At times on the lower bands it seemed to take a minute or so before they found another station which could be copied. At least with the P3 one can more easily find a spot where at least in your part of the globe there is less activity and you might hope to be heard. I also found this especially useful when going after RTTY contacts with ST0R whom I have my only six RTTY QSOs ever with. It was again possible using the waterfall and regular spectrum display to find a place to call without excessive interference. The P3 is a God send for me and I would not wish to be without it. I use to use an Orion II and missed its panadaptor but the P3 has it beat hands down. As the P3 is less expensive you might first get a P3 and then add the second RX with desired filters later. Elecraft has done well with the modular approach. Spoke with a US ham last night who suffered lightning damage and got by with just replacing the Kio3 board - not bad but of course a direct hit and he would have had a lump of carbon to replace. Disconnect antennas when not using radios. At this station a second K3 SN 5487 replacing my Orion II and shortly both the P3 and second Rx are being ordered to complete the setup. Elecraft has done a fine job and continues with the K3/P3 development. Perhaps Flex is as good I do not know but none are better than the Elecraft company when it comes to support. How many other companies have their owner/designers monitoring and occasionally adding comments to the reflector. Good job and thank you Elecraft. The P3 will help you find where the DX is listening, will help you find open spots in a crowded band, and will help you identify and trace RF noises in your RX. The P3 is also super useful when monitoring a dead band (like 10M and 6M) for activity. The sub-RX lets you actually LISTEN to the DX pileup, and is useful for diversity reception if you work much 40, 80, and 160M. For general operation and DX chasing, the P3 is more useful. For serious weak signal work on the lower bands, the Sub-RX is quite useful. I also like being able to listen to two 6M frequencies (CW and SSB, or CW and digital) at the same time. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

An earth connection is required ONLY for lightning safety, and in a high rise, the best and safest connection is to the steel frame of the building, AND to the green wire in the AC outlet. Your ham gear should be bonded together, and to these two points. A connection to the earth does NOT make your antenna work better, nor does it reduce noise, nor does it reduce RFI. Proper BONDING (as described above) CAN help minimize both noise and RFI. A long wire antenna needs some sort of counterpoise to serve as the return for antenna current, and the return for the fields produced by the antenna. In most installations, that function is best filled by radials. In yours, the bond to the building steel is likely to be VERY effective. Don't even consider wasting your money on so-called "artificial grounds" and stuff like that. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I'm an audio professional, and I own and love three fine ribbon mics. I use them for recording trumpet, banjo, and some voices. I wouldn't dream of using them in my ham station. So far, we haven't had much response to the invitations we sent last week to attend a major QRP Event in Monte Sano State Park the evening of Saturday the 21st.We are aware that we only sent the invitation about 10 days ago which could be too short a notice for people having to make travel plans.Another superb Southern Barbecue with Cherries Jubilee for desert (surely this isn't keeping people away) and another novel QRP contest with prizes is planned, but no expenditures have been made so far, pending the level of interest we get from this notification. (The shared contest station uses K3 and PoTA station uses K2.)The Huntsville Hamfest has several dinners that night that compete with this time period. And, this hamfest also has a large number of excellent seminars with celebrities presenting. So most people will be involved with these activities vs. this QRP opportunity. If interested--We need to hear from you within the next 2 days. If we get a reasonable response, we'll co ntinue with our plans. Otherwise, we'll forgo this event for this year and pursue it again next year with more advanced notice to help people get their travel plans in place, etc. (Reducing its scope is another possibility.) Re: [Elecraft] K3 AM filter (on receive) question
Sam, Nothing inconsistent as long as you understand what is being displayed. The display is showing you the audio bandwidth, not the IF bandwidth. An AM signal has two sidebands extending on either side of the carrier, and if the width of an AM signal is 6 kHz, it would demodulate to a maximum of 3 kHz of audio (assuming a roofing filter with very steep skirts). With the 6 kHz filter, if you want to hear substantially greater than 3 kHz audio, you can use synchronous AM, or you can install the 13 kHz filter and increase the width control to 5 kHz (the maximum). 73, Don W3FPR On 8/14/2011 1:42 PM, Sam Morgan wrote: > I have the KFL3A-6K 6 kHz AM/ESSB, 8-pole filter installed and working. > In AM mode, I tap XFIL and VFO B display says FL2 6.00 > I hold SHIFT in and see<--NOR--> > I tap WIDTH and see BW 3.00 -or- HI 3.00 > I tap SHIFT and see *FC 1.50 -or- LO 0.00 > > when I turn WIDTH clockwise to it's maximum, I see BW 5.00 > > 1st question > I thought I would be seeing BW 6.00 > to match the settings of the AM filter > I realize the SHIFT and WIDTH refer to the DSP (I think) > and the XFIL refers to the IF filter > > but does what I'm seeing mean > I am not utilizing the full 6khz of the filter > and in AM Mode due to the DSP > I will never be able to actually have the full 6khz bandwidth? > > > > 2nd question > If I were to install the KFL3B-FM 13 kHz FM filter > I would then tap XFIL and see FLx 13.00 > would I still see the same dsp results as I'm seeing now: > (meaning > I would hold SHIFT in and see<--NOR--> > I would tap WIDTH and see BW 3.00 -or- HI 3.00 > I would tap SHIFT and see *FC 1.50 -or- LO 0.00 > .) > > again would this mean > I would still not be getting anything more than 5.00 bandwidth? > > color me confused... > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

In AM mode, I tap XFIL and VFO B display says FL2 6.00 I hold SHIFT in and see <--NOR--> I tap WIDTH and see BW 3.00 -or- HI 3.00 I tap SHIFT and see *FC 1.50 -or- LO 0.00 when I turn WIDTH clockwise to it's maximum, I see BW 5.00 1st question I thought I would be seeing BW 6.00 to match the settings of the AM filter I realize the SHIFT and WIDTH refer to the DSP (I think) and the XFIL refers to the IF filter but does what I'm seeing mean I am not utilizing the full 6khz of the filter and in AM Mode due to the DSP I will never be able to actually have the full 6khz bandwidth? 2nd question If I were to install the KFL3B-FM 13 kHz FM filter I would then tap XFIL and see FLx 13.00 would I still see the same dsp results as I'm seeing now: (meaning I would hold SHIFT in and see <--NOR--> I would tap WIDTH and see BW 3.00 -or- HI 3.00 I would tap SHIFT and see *FC 1.50 -or- LO 0.00 .) again would this mean I would still not be getting anything more than 5.00 bandwidth? color me confused... -- GB & 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] can not seperate vfo a & b on 20m
The VFOs have become "linked". Hold the SUB button below and to the right of the VFO A knob until you see "UNLINK" in the VFO B area. You alternate between Sub receiver ON and OFF, LINK and UNLINK, and Diversity on/off depending on how long you hold the SUB button. [Elecraft] [k3] dvr playback question
I thought the question was in regard to recording another ham on the air and playing it back to him over the air? It was said the alc was sky high thus the playback not being a accurate representation with no way to adjust except rf gain trial and error. I have not used my dvr for that but find it hard to believe that it's not come up before? And Lyle thanking the gentleman for bringing it to his attention. Surely there's got to be operators doing this successfully. No? [Elecraft] Firmware 4.39 for K3
I updated my K3 on Friday to firmware 4.39 releaased in early July 2011 I use it with my KPA500 (serial # 316) In bearfoot mode the K3 runs 100 watts In driving the amp mode I adjusted it to get all green LEDs (540 watts output). It is reliable and works all the time I think those that are having problems with the two power modes on the K3 need to get the most current firmware 4.39 installed I often make mistakes. I am no authority but the above works for me. 73 Jim W9VNE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Question re the K3s per band power control
GM John: I'm not seeing that problem here with KPA500 s/n 234 and a recent K3/10 (s/n 54xx). I'm using FW 4.39 in the K3 and FW 1.11 in the KPA500. (Gary sent me this most recent FW for the Amp on Fri). I changed the PWR ON config in the KPA500 to "STBY" and the only thing it affects is the power setting when turning the Amp On. Changing bands from either the K3 or the Amp doesn't change OPER to STBY or STBY to OPER. I've set the STBY power level to be 5 W and the OPER power level to be 125W (approx 8 W from the K3) on all bands (all in CW mode). Then regardless of which unit is used to change bands and whether the Amp is in OPER or STBY the power levels are as just indicated. It works as expected. Many thanks to Fred, K6DGW, Paul, NF8J, Frank,W6NEK, and Tom, W1TXT, who responded to my post regarding this problem. Accordingly, I wish to end this thread. 73, John, W2GW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KPA 500 in Europe?
Has anyone in Europe imported the KPA 500 kit? I'm particularly interested in importing to France. What was the final cost plus all taxes and carriage? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Re: K3 DVR question
hi Lyle, thank you for your attention. I tried AGC and RF GAIN, and you are right, this is the only way to influence the recorded signal level. With the RF Gain I can adjust the recording level and I think loud signals will sound better when replayed with the RF Gain down. Maybe an automatic gain control for recording off the air would be the best? The way it is now I have the impression that my transmitted AF Play audio is overmodulated (and limited by ALC) This is based on signal reports I have got from my ham friends nearby. Whatever you decide how to solve the problem, either on the recording side or on the replay side or even on both sides, I am sure it will improve the situation. 73!
