Bill,

I can answer your issue about the key. Make sure you use a STEREO plug. If
you use a mono plug it will behave as you describe.

Good luck with your no-power issue. I had the same thing which I eventually
tracked down to a solder bridge on the control board. Hang in there.

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 alignment and test, part III problem

I just finished up the RF board and am proceeding to the testing.  Much to my
dismay, however, I got no power output when I tried to
adjust the 40 m BPF.  I'm getting 13.5 v to all of the collectors and I pull
220 ma on receive and 420 ma on tune.
The RF detector resistors and diode are correct and the transformers look
good.
With an RF probe I get zero volts on the xmit mixer output (U10 pin 4).
So I went back further and did some basic voltage checks and found some
interesting results.  The key down voltage on the anode of D7 is
0 v when it should be 8 v.  The anode voltage on D6 is 0.645 v on key down
instead of 0 v.  On receive it is 8v.

I'm having some trouble getting my head around how this relates to my lack of
output power.  Another symptom I'm having is that the menu and display controls
cease to function when I plug in a straight key.  But they work ok with a
paddle attached.

I feel a headache starting.  Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Dazed and confused,
Bill, WV1N

[Elecraft] pulled the trigger on a K3

2012-03-02 Thread KC6CNN
Just wanted to thank everyone for the advise and help. Especially Dale at
Elecraft.
I got a K3 with all options except 2nd receiver and 2meter.
Filters are 2.8 , 2.1, 400, 250.
Looking forward to joining the Elecraft family.
Thanks again

Re: [Elecraft] Kx3 power output

2012-03-02 Thread Richard Ferch
The question and response below only consider thermal limitations. There
are also signal quality limitations in some data modes, PSK31 in particular.

PSK31 is very intolerant of non-linearity. The "crest factor" of
PSK31 can be up to 2, i.e. the peak power can be twice the average
power. Since it is clipping of the peaks that causes splatter or IMD,
with most transmitters you need to keep the output power below one-half
the rated maximum in order to ensure linearity. Linearity is not nearly
as much of a problem in RTTY, but it matters in PSK31.

If you have the means to measure IMD of your transmitted PSK31 signal,
you can test this. A couple of years ago I did some tests using a
"PSKmeter" (a device that monitors a transmitted PSK31 signal and
reports the level of IMD products in the signal) observing the output of
my K3 in PSK31 with the K3 in DATA A mode. What I found was that IMD
levels were low at powers below 5 watts (KPA3 not in line) and at powers
above 12 watts but below 50 watts (KPA3 in line), but as the power was
increased above the 5 watt or 50 watt level, the measured IMD started to
increase quite rapidly. The reported IMD at full power (10 watts without
the KPA3 or 100 watts with the KPA3) was high - much higher than I would
consider acceptable.

I did not do similar tests in the K3's PSK D mode, but I have no reason
to believe they would be better. See W7AY's measurements of PSK31
quality in PSK D vs. DATA A (for power levels below 5W and 50W) at
.

I would suggest to anyone who plans to transmit PSK31 at powers greater
than the recommended 5 watt (one-half full power) level that they should
monitor the quality of their transmitted signal to ensure that the
signal quality is acceptable. The simplest "low tech" way to do this is
to have another station report IMD figures for your signal at various
power levels. Note that the other station should be located such that
the signal they receive from you is neither too strong (a very strong
signal can produce IMD in the receiver) nor too weak (the signal must be
well above the noise level for the reported IMD measurement to be
meaningful).

In RTTY such precautions do not appear to be necessary. Qualitative
observations of the spectrum of my K3's RTTY signals in both FSK D and
AFSK A modes did not show a significant observable difference between
the signals at 50 watts and the signals at 100 watts.

Re: [Elecraft] How to improve my signal O/S 20M

2012-03-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bill,

May I suggest a loop. Put a 10 foot support at each corner of that roof
and put wire between each of those supports. You will have a longer
than 80 meter full wave loop that will work locals nicely on 80 meters
as well as giving you a great low angle (read good DX) radiator on 40
meters and above. In fact, for some bands, the gain may exceed that you
get from the 20 meter Moxon, but in different directions.

I would think you bigger problem would be pickup of noise by the
antenna, which will limit the number of weak signals that you can
receive. It may be that your transmit signal is "getting through" but
your receive capability is antenna limited. If your operation involves
digging for weak signals then that could be a limiting factor for you.
If the latter is your problem. then a better receiver (K2 or K3) is not
likely to solve your problem. If the problem is adjacent channel
interference, then yes, the K3 DSP filtering can easily take care of it.

If you're primarily a Mac person, look into MacLoggerDX. It's probably
the most full-featured logging system available for the Mac. It works
well with cocoaModem for digital modes.

[Elecraft] How to improve my signal O/S 20M

2012-03-02 Thread Bill Smith

I’m trying to improve my signal.

I have limited understanding of radio and electronics, but
have picked up a few buzzwords and some of their meanings along the way.

The bad: I live in a ground floor apartment of a very old (100+
year) building (mish-mash of electrical and digital coax in the attic, none of
it in conduit). I am apartment manager
now (don’t own the building) so have essentially no options for antenna over
the yard. I have power lines at 20-25 ft in height about 60 ft north and 40 ft
west. I have telephone lines at the same height 40 ft east. The city I live in
limits my antenna height to 10 ft higher than the highest point on my building.

The good: I have access to the flat (6 degree grade) roof of
the building, 60 ft NS and 100 ft EW; 2 stories, so roof height is 22+ feet. I
have a 40M dipole at 10 ft over the roof, with one wire at 120 degrees (0 for
due north) and 240 degrees (essentially pointing south). It is fed with 110 ft
of a RJ-58A/U. I also have a 20M Moxon (also at 10 feet) pointing 45 degrees
(from Denver CO to Europe) fed with 140 ft of RG-8x.

System specs are (I’m not good with electronics, so not sure
of the meaning of the R and X measurements supplied by my MFJ-259B antenna
analyzer):

40M dipole:
1.6 SWR at 7.2 mhz with R = 76 and X = 15 (no balun)

20M Moxon:
1.3 SWR at 14.0 mhz with R = 50 and X =
15 (1:1 balun)

K-2 with
SSB and ATU for QRP (recently put into to top shape by Don W)

KPA100
w/ATU for QRO (have used little with digital)

Signalink
USB

I am limited to digital (never could learn the code in 300+
hours of practice), but that’s OK.

I have made a number of contacts with the 20M Moxon. (I
limit my power to 5 watts digital, as it can be nearly 100% duty cycle for over
1 minute). It is incredibly quiet (a 30 db front to back ratio as I recall?).
But my DX contacts are usually South America (at 180 degrees) and sometimes
Southern CA (must be at about 240 degrees! – how does my signal get there??).
No European contacts yet, but now that I am retired, maybe I’ll have better
luck at noon (MST is –8hrs UCT).

Possible improvement: I have limited (very) funds, but could
extract about 100 ft of 300 ohm ladder line from a G5RV, that I got for $10.00,
and replace 90 feet of RG-58 with the ladder line and a 4:1 balun that I
purchased when I was “rich” (i.e. employed). I would hope that this would
reduce my loss by maybe 2 db, and allow me to work any band between 80M and 10M
(I heard that a doublet is quieter than a dipole – is that true?).

The smaller question is: I understand the impedance of the
300 ohm ladder line could result in an SWR of up to 15:1 on some bands, so will
my K2ATU handle that?

The bigger question: can a 40M antenna be effective in my
situation? Or is the interference from the electrical wiring 10 feet below my
antenna, the low power (5 watts), the nearby power lines, and the radiation
pattern of a 40M signal off of a 10 ft ground (all my signal going straight
up?) too much to overcome. I have made
0 contacts on 40M using PSK31 and JT-65. But maybe I need to try longer, as I
have only worked that band a total of 8 hours after 20M has closed – I SEE a
lot of JT-65, but have yet to be heard.

Final question: What options do I have to improve my chance
of being heard outside of 20M (since my roof perimeter is 320 ft, I could fit
in an 80M loop. However, construction could be a challenge with limitations on
changes that I could make on a roof that I don’t own)?

Whew! If you got through this post, you deserve a gold star!

Thanks for any input.

Ron,

The 6 meter antenna connects directly to the XV50.

Since you have the K60XV, set up the XV50 for 1 mW input power, and set

it as TRN1 (or 2 or 3 or 4, your choice) with the dip switches in the

XV50. Also set it for split TX/RX IF cables. The K2 TRNx selection

should match the DIP switch settings in the XV50. Set the other menu

parameters - especially the power equals Low and 1.00 mW. That should

make you "good to go"

When the KPA100 is connected, you cannot use the QRP ANT2 for anything -

the presence of the KPA100 forces the KAT2 to ANT1.

When you have it set up correctly, the band switch will select 6 meters,

the XV50 will turn on and you can TX/RX just like on the HF bands, but

using the antenna that is connected to the XV50.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 alignment and test, part III problem

2012-03-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bill,

For the headache, take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning! :-)

Since you do not have 8 volts on the anode of D7 during transmit, that
says the 8T voltage rail is not producing voltage, and that 8T voltage
is needed to power the transmit mixer and a few other transmit stages -
so bottom line, it will not transmit without voltage on the 8T voltage rail.

The source of your problem is on the control board, and involves Q1 and
Q3 as well as the TX output from the MCU. During Transmit (or better a
TUNE), the gate of Q3 should go to +5 volts, and its drain should go to
zero volts. If the gate of Q3 is at 5 volts and the drain does not go
to zero volts, then Q3 is damaged.

The action of Q3 in turn should make Q1 conduct with the emitter at
about 8 volts and the base at a lower voltage (by more than 0.6 volts) -
in other words less than 7.4 volts on the base of Q1. If those
conditions are true, then Q1 will conduct and 8 volts will appear at the
collector of Q1.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 utility on Xubuntu 11.10 .. help needed

2012-03-02 Thread Sam Morgan
Thanks Dan,
that was exactly the info I needed. My delay in replying was due to some
problems with me and the small fonts in Xubuntu. I finally decided to
change to LinuxMint, which I found was easier for me to configure with
larger fonts. A bonus with Mint was the ia32-libs were already installed.

I tested the K3Util by installing the new k3fw4r48 which updated my MCU and
FPF.

(didn't even need to run it by using ./k3util just clicked on the icon)
Mint is showing a lot of promise... so far.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 XV50 Transverter Antenna Connection

2012-03-02 Thread Don Wilhelm

[Elecraft] K2 alignment and test, part III problem

2012-03-02 Thread William Schmidt

I just finished up the RF board and am proceeding to the testing. Much to my
dismay, however, I got no power output when I tried to
adjust the 40 m BPF. I'm getting 13.5 v to all of the collectors and I pull
220 ma on receive and 420 ma on tune.
The RF detector resistors and diode are correct and the transformers look good.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 XV50 Transverter Antenna Connection

2012-03-02 Thread John D'Ausilio
You probably need to open up the XV and look at how it was set up ..
jumpers move around depending on whether it's used with Elecraft or
foreign equipment, different attenuators, etc
Is the transverter power control working? e.g. if you select the band
on K2 does the XV light up?

If it's all set up properly, the pair of cables from K60XV and XV50
carry 28MHz between K2 and XV, antenna connects to big connector on XV

Actually, if you want some of the more esoteric digital modes (those
10% or less of digital activity not covered by the RTTY and PSKnn
support in DXLab Suite), MultiPSK is a drop-in replacement for
WinWarbler without any of the issues created by HRD/DM780.

[Elecraft] K2 XV50 Transverter Antenna Connection

2012-03-02 Thread KM4VX
I have a K2/10 connected to a KAT100 and KPA100, both enclosed in the
external EC2 enclosure. Works great, thanks to Don in Wake Forest. I just
acquired a used XV 50 and have been trying to connect it to my K2 setup. I
can't figure out how to connect the antenna output from the transverter to
my 6 meter dipole. I have the antenna 1 port from the K2 going to the EC2,
and two antenna ports from the EC2 going to antennas. I control antenna 1
and antenna 2 on the EC2 with the K2 antenna switch/button; this is normal.
I now have a free antenna 2 port on the K/2 and the single antenna port on
the XV50. The instructions ((XV50,K60XV (which I have and use with the
transverter) and K2)) indicate the coax to the 6 meter antenna should be
directly from the transverter. That doesn't seem to work. How does the K2
know which antenna port to use? Should I use antenna 1 or antenna 2 switch
on the K2? The antenna 2 output on the K2 is not connected to anything now
based on the way it is connected to the EC2; K2 uses only antenna 1 port
although ports 1 and 2 are used from the KPA100 to antennas. Thanks. Ron

4.48 just added support for the K3/0 in the K3Remote mode. Nothing else with

Without this rev f/w the K3/0 generates errors on power up, since there are
no DSP and RF components.

We will get the release notes updated shortly.

Jim Dunstan wrote:

> The KX3 specifications indicate a nominal 10 watts output. When

We recommend using 5 W for data modes and keeping transmissions
reasonably short. However, you can definitely use full power (up to 12
W) if the duty cycle is low, such as during hunt-and-pounce in a
contest. Of course as the duty cycle goes up, so will the PA and case
temperature, and eventually the KX3 may automatically roll back your
power output.

I just did a test using the built-in PSK-D mode, alternately
transmitting and receiving for 20 seconds each (simulating short
contest contacts). At 12 watts (20 meters), the temperature never got
high enough to roll back power during ten minutes of this.

I then tested the KX3's high-efficiency TX mode, which reduces current
drain by roughly 50% for a given power level. This mode kicks in at at
5.0 W or less in CW/FSK-D modes, and at 3.0 W or less in all other
modes. So I set power to 3.0 W in PSK-D mode, which is amazingly
effective given the S/N ratio of PSK31, and transmitted continuously.
After 5 minutes the PA temperature was still increasing slowly, but
I'm guessing I could have gone on for another 5-10 minutes.

The lesson, here, is to let the other station transmit once in awhile :)

Re: [Elecraft] operating software for K-3

2012-03-02 Thread Kevin
I'd suggest the DX Lab Suite for logging and FLDigi for digital modes.
If you're a "CW guy" then I'd suggest adding the K1EL WinkeyUSB. Works
all the logging programs and sends perfect CW despite windows
multi-tasking handicap.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 beta 4.48

2012-03-02 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
4.48 just added support for the K3/0 in the K3Remote mode. Nothing else with
regard to user features.

Without this rev f/w the K3/0 generates errors on power up, since there are no
DSP and RF components.

We will get the release notes updated shortly.

[Elecraft] firmware feature request

2012-03-02 Thread Matt Murphy
Hello, I recently had the following issue and was wondering if a firmware
feature could be added to make it impossible to do what I did:

I put up a nonresonant dipole and connected it to the K3. I wanted to test
the antenna on 40m so I tuned up with the built-in antenna tuner which
obtained a 1:1 (or very close) match.

I wanted to verify that the balun I made was not prone to heating up, so I
figured I'd put the K3 in tune mode for a a minute or so. About 15 seconds
into this, smoke started coming from the K3. Turns out there was too much
reflected power and it heated up the filter (blue toroid + capacitors) on
the KAT3 which is designed to prevent energy from the IF from being part of
the transmitted signal. 40M was apparently close enough to cause this to
heat up.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to have the firmware prevent
excessive reflected power situations (by limiting forward power if the
pre-KAT3 SWR is too high) on 40m or any other bands close enough to the IF
frequency to cause the filter to heat up (not sure if this is also a risk
on 30m).

The support I received from Elecraft on this issue was superb. I just
figured that I'd put it in as a firmware request b/c I think K3 users may
not realize that connecting a nonresonant antenna can be dangerous to the
K3 on 40m, and it would seem that the same approach of reducing forward
power used to protect the finals could also be used to protect the filter.

[Elecraft] Kx3 power output

2012-03-02 Thread Jim Dunstan

Hi

The KX3 specifications indicate a nominal 10 watts output. When
operating a mode such as PSK, which presents a continuous output,
what is the recommended power output? 10watts ? or something
less. given the normal amount of time between xmission and reception
in an average QSO?? Can the KX3 handle 10w output under these
conditions or should the power be reduced to a lower value?

Ah, of course. Your radio wasn't working well on the bands using upper
sideband because of the filter offset! Very clever of Elecraft support to
pick that up. I am glad you got it sorted out.

Re: [Elecraft] operating software for K-3

2012-03-02 Thread Jan Ditzian
I use Logger32 for logging and one-click QSY to DXCluster spots.
Logger32 employs MMTTY or MMVARI for RTTY, PSK31, and other digital
modes. It has a built-in telnet program for spots, plus CW and voice
sending routines. It tracks a number of awards (DXCC, WAS, and
others). It can output ADIF for LoTW log submission, and accepts LoTW
downloads to integrate those data into the log. Logger32 and the
associated programs are freeware. Logger32 is one of the best bargains
in ham radio, but put on your flameproof suit before you ask for help on
the hamlogger yahoogroup; the assistance there is very authoritative,
but some posters assume that you have thoroughly read the help files (RTFM).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Confussion - Help Please

Gerald,

I would add one other caution so you don't get bitten by a common
"gotcha". If you run lines between the K3 and your mic/headphone (also
called LineIn and LineOut on most laptops), make sure you turn off the
Windows system sounds. These can be transmitted out via the "sound card",
creating transmissions you don't want from your K3.

Good luck getting everything up and running!

Re: [Elecraft] operating software for K-3

2012-03-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
You will get many different responses, everyone has their favorites.

I used to use HRD/DM780 for digital modes, but more recently have
switched to Fldigi. HRD polls the radio too much.

Fldigi supports most all digital modes (except some of Joe Taylor's modes)

If you are looking for a logger and control of the radio from the mouse
and keyboard, I would suggest trying the DXLab suite. It supports RTTY
and some data modes, but if you want more data mode selections, it
interoperates with Fldigi.

If you are well steeped into digital modes, you may want to run HamLib
in conjunction with Fldigi.

I find DXLabs the easier set of programs to use. You can pick and
chose what components you need and as you get more comfortable then
add others. HRD is moving to a commercial pay program where as DXLabs
is free. The support you receive from the DXLabs author and yahoo
group is excellent. They are both excellent programs and have many
users but for me DXLabs is the one I chose.

sound card additions.
I have used the free K3 Utility program and the serial port cable
you will already have connected to your K3 for updates to use RTTY. I have
even had respectable run rates in contests with this simple setup. I see
PSK31 as a choice there in the program but have not tried it. Again, all of
this is ready "out of the box" with the free K3 Utility program and the
serial connection you will have for K3 updates.
My logging program by N3FJP sends CW with the K3 as well. For
that I have a USB to 1/4 inch phono plug cable from the computer to the
manual key jack on the back of the K3. No other connections needed and it
is a simple way to use CW via keyboard while the paddles also can be
connected and working at the same time for fills, serial numbers etc. Note
that this method requires a logging program that sends CW and a USB to 1/4
inch phono plug. This cable was suggested by someone on the list and I can
dig that info up if you need it.
I have no connection with the above mentioned products, just a
satisfied user. You can do the soundcard connections if you wish but this
KISS method has worked for me. YMMV.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Confussion - Help Please

2012-03-02 Thread Edward R. Cole
John,

I have my K3 connected to my computer exactly as described by Don
W3FPR. I bought 1/8-inch mini-phone connector audio cables from
RS. These connectors mate most computers and the K3. I bought the
KUSB Serial to USB adaptor cable when I ordered my K3. It is the
Prolific version but worked fine after downloading new driver from
prolific. That cable is no longer sold by K3 so not an issue. The
new KUSB cable is based on FTDI chipset.

I run all kinds of soundcard sw with the K3 with this wiring
interface. You must use DATA mode for this and suggest you read the
respective section of the K3 manual about this. There are several
DATA selections depending on data mode desired. Have question about
that come back and ask after reading the DATA sections.

I am expert user of WSJT: JT65, MAP65 and WSPR, but not the HF
JT65. I also run ARGO, psk-31, QRSS. Looking into running Opera, ROS.

Jorge (and others) -
I am 90% installing/setting up the K3-to-K3 Twin RemoteRig system. Be glad
to share any bits and pieces I've learned with you, and vice-versa, as I am
having to operate this via a relatively SLOW microwave ISP out in the
boonies!

In testing so far I found considerably improved CW output when I have used
the M1-M4 Message keying vs the paddle/internal keyer. So with the typical
keying output of a PC, from N1MM for example, is there anyway to 'access'
that same message keying 'output'?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Using the K144XV to drive higher microwave transverters

2012-03-02 Thread ELECRAFT
RobYes you can:-I have xv1 driving an external 432/28 xverter, xv2 using the
internal 144 xverter on 144MHz, xv3 driving an external 1296/144 xverter xv4
driving an external 2304/144 xverter etc...THe hard part was getting the k3
to switch these external boxes automatically, see my web site
http://g4fre.com/k3proj.htmThe only thing you cannot do (STILL) is direct
frequency entry from the keyboard above 999.999MHz ie
<4><3><2><.><1>goes to 432.1MHz however <1><2><9><6><.><2> does
NOT go to 1296.2Daveg4freHi all,

I'm currently contemplating the internal K144XV transverter, but bearing
in mind possible 23cm operation in the future - in particular, the 23cm
transverter I'm looking at uses a 144MHz IF.

Is it possible to configure one of the transverter bands on the K3 to
enable the K144XV (with its associated 28MHz IF), then use the 144MHz
output from there (via the ANT3 socket, I'm guessing) to drive an
external 23cm transverter, and show the appropriate 1296MHz frequency on
the K3's display? (This whilst maintaining another transverter band just
for "normal" 144MHz operation.)

Being able to assert one of the external transverter control lines at
the same time would be an additional bonus!

Many thanks,
Rob, M0VFC

I would suggest N1MM Logger and the DXLab Suite. Both are free and N1MM

Take a look at Fldigi and Hamlib - those are multiplatform. If you are

Re: [Elecraft] K3 + MicroHam MicroKeyer + Heil Proset

2012-03-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
Tom,

You have too many devices involved to say whether this is a problem with
your setup and cables or whether it is a K3 problem.

Do you have anything connected between the Microkeyer and the K3 PTT
input? If you are going to get PTT to the K3, you must have something
connected to the PTT input.

The other modes can use VOX to initiate transmit - my guess is that you
have VOX set on for CW and RTTY, etc. and not for SSB. Do you have the
correct microphone jack (front or rear) selected?

Describe your setup in more detail, we do not have enough information to
do any more than make guesses.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Confussion - Help Please

2012-03-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gerald,

You can operate data modes with only 2 cables - 3.5mm stereo audio
cables. One between the K3 line in and the computer headphone jack -
the other between the computer mic jack and the K3 line out. If your
computer allows switching between mic in and line in levels, set it to
line in and you are all set to go as long as you use the K3 VOX.

If you cannot set the mic jack to line in, you will likely need two
resistors to put an attenuator in the cable between K3 line out and the
computer mic in - use 100k in series and 10k across the cable conductors
- the 10k goes on the mic in side of the 100k resistor.

If you want to use PTT instead of VOX, you will need a USB to serial
adapter (use one with the FTDI chipset) between the computer and the
RS-232 connector on the K3. Set your application to use either RTS or
DTR for PTT and set the K3 CONFIG: PTT - KEY menu entry to match your
application selection.

One caution - using the serial port signals for PTT and keying may cause
the K3 to go into transmit when the computer boots - the computer does
testing and initialization of those signal lines during the boot
process. Not a problem, but just something to be aware of.

Amazon, and other on-line cable sources like Monoprice or CableWholesale.
Probably at Target and Walmart as well. Some may call them 1/8" patch
cables. Get stereo cables. Even for mono inputs, the stereo cables will work
just fine. Just connect between your laptop microphone input and headphone
output to the K3 Line Out and Line In.

[Elecraft] Wanted: K3

2012-03-02 Thread John_N1JM
Looking for a K3. Prefer one with no sub receiver. It doesn't have to have a
lot of options. Please reply off list. CONUS only please.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Confussion - Help Please

2012-03-02 Thread Scott Manthe
Gerald- You would just plug the audio cables from the rig into the
laptop's headphone and mic jacks. The term "soundcard" is better used
when applied to desktop PCs, and refers to the days when computers
didn't have integrated audio on the motherboard and if one wanted to
process audio at all, one had to buy a card to plug into one of the
expansion slots. (Your laptop could actually have a "soundcard," but
more likely it has integrated audio.) These days, most PCs have
integrated audio processing, but people use sound cards to do higher-end
audio processing.

Hope this helps!

[Elecraft] First experience using KX3 in Germany

2012-03-02 Thread DL2FI. Peter
Last weekend I did some intensive playing with my brand new Fieldtest KX3
Serial Number 00016. It was a quite good situation for testing, because UBA
contest blocked 40m with horrible loud signals, 10m was opened so it was
possible to try some DX and the QRP Forum was quiet, so I had time enough.

To say it first: All those months of waiting for the KX3 I was much too
conservative. In a lot of discussions I had classified the KX3 as "
Improved FT-817 with super control unit" This was definitively wrong and
short by magnitudes.

The Receiver
Extreme low noise, extreme clean signals, nor ringing in CW down to the 50Hz
DSP filter. No crossover from nearby stations. I could perfect hear S4
signals only 2 kHz below or above a 9 plus 40 signal, in worse case I could
eventually hear some key clicks. In SSB thanks t0 High Cut and LowCut I was
able to decode signals middle out of a pileup although I am having
difficulties in copying SSB normally. (That's the reason to do 99% CW for
me)

Latency was absolutely no problem. I connected a K2, K3 and the KX3 using a
splitter to the same antenna and all 3 haven been absolute synchronic.

Intermodulations:
That was one of the points, I expected problems due to the well known fact
of extreme high sum levels especially in the evening here in Europe. I was
more than surprised: I could not find any Intermodulation with or without
Preamplifier. The Preamp can be used in 3 steps: +10dB, +20dB and +30dB.
Against all experience, and just for fun I switched it to +30dB while using
my full size diamond shape loop on 40m. The RX now sounded a little bit
nervous, but again I didn´t find IM2 nor IM3 products. But the KX3 several
times switched back the Preamp, whilst the display was showing "High Signal"
This is a protection circuit which reacts if the sum of all signal voltages
is too high. Wayne, N6KR answered to my question "Actual KX3 is analyzing
all in band signals, in a further firmware version it will detect out band
signals as well."

Sensitivity: 1µV Signal gives a noise free, clear tone in the headphone.

Empfindlichkeit: ein 1µV Signal erzeugt einen fast rauschfreien Ton.

Unwanted Sideband Suppression: After I had adjusted Phase and Gain (easy to
do at the KX3) the opposite sideband of a 9+20 signal could no longer be
seen in the S-Meter, it was just audible when I listened concentrated.
That's much better than most Xtal Filters do.

AGC: Critical point for all SDR based designs. Working in the multi crowded
40m Band during the contest I found that AGC Fast was working not optimal.
Lyle, who is the designer of the DSP suggested to use AGC Slow at this time.
So did and I can say, it works excellent. Lyle is still working on AGC
fast, so I am sure this will do it also in future.

Current consumption in receive: 200mA

The Transmitter:
All worked stations stated an excellent sound of the transmitted signal in
SSB and in CW. I didn´t yet use the Equalizer, but I played with the
compression. Compression between 10dB and 25 dB resulted in "outstanding
good modulation" reports. Even when I got reports far above 599, no one
could hear any key clicks. I personally do not like full QSK, for me it is
ok if I can listen between letters, but I tested it and yes, the KX3 is full
QSK. Internal Temperature Control showed after several ragChew QSO < 35
degree C for the PA and 38 degree C for the DSP Unit (This shows, who is
eating current :-)
The internal ATU is working like a champ. I was able to tune the 40m element
of my Trap beam at 30m easily.

When I started with the KXPd3 Paddle, I had some problems. In a discussion
with Wayne, N6KR we found that my KX3 was missing its front rubber feet.
After installing the feet, the paddle works really great.

Because it was warm outside at Sunday (+10 C) I opened /p season and did
some QSO in the garden and enjoyed the combination KX3 / HFP-1 (The follow
up of MP1). A great combination, I know what I will use in spring and summer
on my bicycle tours.

QSOing:
Yes, I am sure good old Mojo found its way from K2 into KX3. I heard W2mm in
a Pile Up on ten. She got me at my second call and stayed in a long QSO.
Carol was working at her K3 and was enthusiastic to hear a KX3 from Germany.
Some type of Elecraft Family Bonus :-)

Under the bottom line:
Elecraft is fiddling on the firmware, but under the bottom shell just now
and as it is the KX3 is one of the best Receivers I know. Due to KX3s
smallness and because my Mobil home is one of the smallest you can get, it
is absolutely sure what I am using if you hear me on HF if I find time to be
on the road again.

I have to excuse for my laughing, when a German DXpedition HAM talked about
using a KX3 for his next DXpedition. After some days playing with my KX3 I
think, it will handle even such use.

[Elecraft] K3 Confussion - Help Please

2012-03-02 Thread KC6CNN
I called Elecraft today to get information about ordering my new K3.
I spoke with Dale, Very informative and so willing to help.
One question I asked him and he gave me the answer to was on RTTY, PDK31,
and CW I thought that I could hook up a cable between my laptop and K3 and
be able to operate those modes.
Maybe I miss understood but from what I got was that I needed that cable,
DB9 to USB or usb converter and that I needed to connect the in and out from
the back of the radio to my sound card. I checked my laptop and don't have a
sound card port on the outside of it.
I do have a 3.5 mm head phone jack and a 3.5mm mic jack on the front.
So my confussion is do I need to hook up the 3.5mm jacks or will it run with
just the one cable from laptop to radio. I hoping that, because I don't know
where to buy the other cables, and with my current conditions, I can't make
them.

Anyone know the run down on this?

Thank you in advance.
Gerald - KC6CNN
