How do you know what time the order was placed?

I went back and viewed my original order confirmation e-mail and there is no
time on it, just an order number. Are we to go off of the time that the
e-mail was generated? If that's the case my order went in 12/28 at 6:24PM
EST, or 2324UTC (I think).

[Elecraft] KX1 Power level

2012-05-06 Thread AC8JW
"What is your DC voltage? The KX1 specification is 3-4 watts with 12 volts,
so you are close to the spec right now. If you have an antenna analyzer,
check you dummy load to be certain it is the same 50 ohm pure resistive load
on both bands. Your wattmeter may also be frequency sensitive - many are.

Yes, look at the toroids and the capacitor values in the LPF.

Don't push the power too far - the LPF componentscan be stressed with power
level much over 4 watts (that depends on the SWR)."

Checking power output with a new dummy load shows 3 watts on both 40M and
20M per my W1. Power supply voltage is 14 volts.

A check of the power with an RF probe with 14 volts supply showed 6. 7V on
20M and 6.5 on 40M. Values on a 12VDC battery supply were about 1 volt
lower. It would appear that both Bands are at the same level. I am
wondering if the power difference noted on the W1 SWR meter is a an issue
with the W1?

Thanks

[Elecraft] K3 Tx audio ramp up with DATA-A mode

2012-05-06 Thread Bob Cunnings
If you are using Windows, there *is* a way to adjust the emu0202 output
in software. It's not by using the EM-U control panel app but by using the
Windows Volume Control applet instead.

I'm using an emu0202 with Windows XP.

Either access the Windows Volume Control from the task bar

or

Navigate to Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices. Select
the Audio tab (not the Volume tab where the controls are grayed
out) and you should see the emu0202 as the "sound playback"
device. Click on the Volume... button to open the Speaker dialog,
where you can adjust the output level. With mine set to the 2nd tick mark
from the bottom, the mic level control is set to 16 or 17 to drive
the K3 to 4-5 bars input in DATA A mode.

If you are running Windows 7 things may be a bit different.

No, the emu0202 instructions don't mention how to do this.

Re: [Elecraft] Portable Antennas (Is there an "easy" button?)

2012-05-06 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
The laws of physics still apply. Small loop antenna have very large
circulating RF currents. Such currents are highly vulnerable to any
resistance in the conductors or connections.

Until we have room-temperature superconductors such antennas will have very
low efficiencies. But even low efficiency antennas can get out as Hams can
attest since the first Amateur set up his spark coil over a century ago.

Hi Bernie,

There will be many opinions, here are mine. There are many different
antennas each with its pros and cons. You are looking for something quick.
While I have no experience with the Buddi-Pole system it seems to me to be
something that should not take a lot of time to set up. Maybe switching
between different bands is the issue.

A wire of reasonable length (and ground system of some sort) and a good
tuner can switch bands fairly rapidly. Your length of 40 feet seems
reasonable although other lengths may be a bit better depending on the bands
you want to operate on. A problem with a wire antenna is putting it up and
taking it down and the need for supports. If you can just toss it up into an
available tree it could be a quick thing. If you try to get a rope over a
tree and have to walk through nasty vegetation and things get tangled up it
might not be so pleasant.

Performance wise for a single band I really like a dipole. There are a
number of ways to get multiband operation: traps, jumpers to use or isolate
portions, and feeding with balanced line and use a tuner. I generally do my
portable operation while camping at the same location for several days.
Setup time is not so much an issue for me.

While some may say having the optimal antenna is the most important thing I
think there may be some other perhaps more important considerations for
portable operation. One is picking the best band to use on a given outing.
Getting a good feel for the bands at home helps a lot, as does checking
propagation information. The best antenna you can put up for portable use
might be about useless if there band conditions are poor on your band of
choice. Once you have a decent antenna selected and have picked a band that
will be open the important thing is good operating. One CQ may not get a
contact. It could take some effort and time.

Bottom line, do planning on what band to use, pick a simple wire antenna,
spend a reasonable amount of time and you will get contacts!

Good luck and have fun!

switchers depend upon them?

A linear supply has only a tiny loss in the transformer.

Both linear and switching supplies have losses associated with the voltage
regulator circuits, but in that respect they are similar.

Switchers can be highly reliable, but they have far more parts subject to
failure than the typical linear supply. The advantages of a switcher is that it
is lighter and smaller (thanks to avoiding the big transformer) and typically
cheaper.

In the thousands of critical commercial applications I have worked in, both on
shore and at sea, linear supplies were the standard.

But anything can and will fail over time.

[Elecraft] K3 Tx audio ramp up with DATA-A mode

2012-05-06 Thread Edward R. Cole
Just providing some information that may help others that have
experienced RF slow ramp up to full power when driving Tx audio from
a soundcard (typ DATA-A application). I

I had comments back at the time I asked for solutions to check for
low audio level. But it was the opposite, in fact!

I am using an external emu0202 soundcard (I/F to computer vis USB2.0)
which has plenty of level controls for a sound input but none for
output via the stereo phone jacks. Going into the operating sw for
the soundcard reveals no adjustment of the output audio (usually
called playback). I found reference to making adjustments as part of
installation of the sw - but none after installation - huh?

Well not wanting to go thru all the process of un-installing then
re-installinng I looked for an alternative. There was one starring
me in the face on the front panel. There is a headphone jack with
level control (volume) as part of the on-off control. I unplugged my
Tx audio line from the jack at the rear and into the headphone jack
and adjusted the TX audio to 4-bar with 5th flickering.

I could not accomplish this using the mic level control on the K3
(which doubles as line-in level). Setting the mic=0 results in no
audio; setting the mic=1 and it was overloading the K3. The
soundcard output was just too hot. Using the headphone jack with
headphone level control lets me set it just right.

Result. First time I sent test tones form the sw the K3 went thru
the gradual RF ramp up. Next time I tried it K3 immediately went to
full power with no ramp up...problem solved!

Re: [Elecraft] New AGC FW

2012-05-06 Thread Gary Gregory
*Bob,

I concur with all your observations. This is the largest FW improvement
effecting all styles of operation that I can recall in quite some time.

An S3 noise on 40M this morning was easily eliminated and then a local Ham
travelling by was 30db over S9 and I noticed the lack of distortion
previously experienced prior to this upgrade.

Now we need to be patient to see if the auto-notch feature can be enabled
whilst running the new settings.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 New AGC FW

2012-05-06 Thread Wayne Burdick
All noise blankers cause some distortion -- it's a matter of degree.
NARrow blanking pulses and lower DSP blanker settings will cause less.

I'm surprised the AGC changes are having this much of a benefit, but
I'm not going to complain.

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supplies

Those Astrons ... The SS-30M, I took the cover off and went, "YUK!" It is a
switching power supply and my first thought is to treat it like I treat
computer power supplies I liked it because it small and light weight
and it fit perfect in my portable station container.

As for the VS-50M, today is the first time I have turned it on in 15 years
and the problem there was simply oxidation on the voltage control pot. A
couple of squirts of DeOxit and it is working as it should. As a precaution
I loosened and then tightened all the screws on the caps and regulator board
as other have mentioned. I purchased it used.

I also have an Astron RS-12 that serves to power shack accessories. I
purchased it used 10 years ago to replace a homebrew power supply (1983 ARRL
handbook page 5-22) that took a lightening hit (fixed it).

That SS-30M, I guess it may have been a bit light for running the K3.

I have read everyone's posts and been to the links. Thanks all, it's was
educating. Now 20 CW is wide open over the pole.

Don, Gary and the group,

Wayne's earlier comments about the noise blanker working better turns out to be
an understatement to say the least. Not only has the clarity of signals
improved by being able to tailor the onset of the SW AGC to start at a higher
level and clean up many of the artifacts that created problems before, but it
also allows the IF noise blanker as well as the DSP noise blanker to work more
like most people's concept of what a noise blanker should be able to do and now
does it with FAR less distortion to the desired signals. This includes using
heavy blanking with strong signals close in.

I've now been able to eliminate some stubborn power line interference that has
been plaguing me for a couple of weeks and due to recent tornado damage a few
miles South of me, the power company has not had time to find and cure it yet.
They've been busy replacing the temporary lines & poles they used to get
everyone back on line as quickly as they could after the storm.

Now that they are on the right track, I'll bet there will be quite a few more
improvements to come.

Gentlemen: Not to put too fine a point on this but none of my questions were
answered on the web page. That's why I asked them. (I did not ask if it was a
switcher). Linear or switcher it's all about noise and regulation. Nothing puts
the banana boat swing on your CW like poor regulation. How fast does it recover
from a 20 amp step? Actually, the chances are a switcher will be a little
better at the step response and poorer on the noise. Also, since I have a
strong dislike for supplies that pass the smoke test I'd like to see an UL
logo. Finally it has a fan, what is the acoustic noise level.

Most of the answer's to Fred's questions can be found on the company's website,
but...

- Yes, it's a switching design
- The feet/tabs/protrusions are metal. These are provided so as to allow the
user (installer?) to bolt them into a cabinet or onto a desk. There are
adhesive rubber feet that are shipped with the supply.

As for the entire switching/linear debate...

I've used both over the years. I currently have an older (linear) Agilent
supply in the shack which was the primary DC supply, as I am disinclined to use
hobby supplies of any type. The Bulldog is, even when compared to professional
gear, quieter, the output looks the same on a scope, I haven't heard it on my
radio(s) yet and it emits much less waste heat than any linear supply I have
ever come in contact with. The waste heat issue alone is one of my primary
motivations for installing a switching supply, and is an important
consideration in a number of commercial systems. High-quality switching
supplies offering high "up-time" are common-place today in many
mission-critical applications.

Also, aside from the highest-quality, professional linear supplies, I have
personally witnessed fewer transformer delaminations and filter capacitor
problems from switching supplies. Yes, there are plenty of "bad" switching
supplies out there, but then are "bad" linear supplies as well.

I guess I just find it odd that several responses promote a brand of linear
supply that has webpages devoted to address a myriad of shortcomings, and yet
this supply is met with (in my opinion) excessive skepticism, primarily on the
basis of it's "switching" design.

Good questions, Fred! From their dimensions I'm guessing they are switchers. I
could not find the info either.

They look like they are designed to go into an equipment rack, not on a desk
top. But I bet you could put rubber feet on those tabs easily enough.

Color me old fashioned (I still like spending an afternoon on a horse or
pounding brass with a straight key), but I avoid switchers no matter how much
people claim they are quiet and I also avoid fans at every opportunity.

I have several Astrons, not because they fail, but because they provide quiet
(electrically and acoustically) power and redundancy. Should one ever fail, the
other can keep the equipment humming, even if at slightly reduced output power.

Hi Bernie,

You might have to trim the antenna wire a bit so that the autotuners
will load it up on all bands, and maybe add one or two extra wires on
the ground side. After that you should have yourself a very good,
compact antenna.

I worked Seychelles on my KX-1 on batteries (2 watts) on 20m years ago
with a 24 ft wire and two 8-foot radials that were stretched actoss my
2nd floor bedroom floor. The antenna wire ran out to a tree outside my

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supplies

2012-05-06 Thread Edward R. Cole
I guess in any case "your experience may vary", but here is mine.

I have an Astron VS-35M that was bought in 1980 and only repaired
once when I back biased the LM923 by charging a battery, Pass
transistors are the originals. That is 32-years of service! It now
serves as my service bench supply, because I replaced it with a
RS-50M which runs 24/7 for at least 10-years.

I had dozens (35 to memory) of the R20A at work that served very
reliably in severe maritime environments on boats and kept on
working. I did have one or two croak but they were in-service
continuously on the boats (24/7). Those that went I suspect from
boat generator voltage surges (to 160vac). The transformers failed.

The Astron's are very basic design and completely reparable if the
transformer is OK. I did even order a replacement for the
transformer that cost > 50% the new price on the PS. IN my final
years on the job I ordered some of the 20A switching supplies for
their size/weight to package into portable packages.

[Elecraft] Portable Antennas (Is there an "easy" button?)

2012-05-06 Thread Bernie KF0QS
Dear Folks:

I have a K2/10 (#6922) and a K1 (#1024). I have used the latter in the
field, and hope to use both portable. I have a Buddi-Pole setup, but am
annoyed at how long it takes to set up. I am wondering if you folks have a
suggestion for a really easy portable antenna setup. Anyone?

As a corollary to that question, I hear people say they just "toss a wire up
in a tree". Both of my Elecraft rigs have the ATU's installed, and so,
could I just use a wire? I am contemplating getting some fine gauge wire
(#24?) and soldering a 40 foot length to the positive pole of a BNC
connector and a similar length to the shield. What do you guys think?

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supplies

2012-05-06 Thread amsctalx

Correct...forgive me for the *brain fade*...yes the new adjustment IS for
the onset of AGC as you point out. My observations still remain as stated.

Apologies to the grout for my tardiness in explaining what I am
seeing/hearing.

I will repeat that the muddiness I had before is now not apparent, at least
to a level that it was and signals are now much easier to make out.

There are some limitations with this FW but that is also being looked at by
Elecraft but I will leave that for the folks at Elecraft to explain.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 Kit #80 looking for QSOs

2012-05-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jeff,

To set the mic gain correctly, use the ALC meter on the KX3 while
operating into a dummy load. Adjust your mic level for 6 to 7 bars on
the ALC meter (and do not change it no matter what others on the air
tell you.

With that accomplished, try compression of 10% as indicated by the meters.

Now you can make some contacts and adjust the compression and TX EQ to
be suitable for the ears of the listeners.

I will make a couple comments about the TX EQ settings before you ask
"on the air" - I strongly recommend you set the first two TX EX bands to
minimum. Those frequencies add nothing to the intelligibility, but do
consume a great amount of power at the expense of higher frequencies
that do provide greater intelligibility.

[Elecraft] Trade TT C21 for KX1

2012-05-06 Thread jacob chambers
Hello;

Just testing some waters...
I have a nearly mint Ten Tec Century 21 CW Transceiver I would like to trade
for a KX1. I can send photos. It works 100% and includes the matching crystal
calibrator, manual, and a Century keyer. The keyer was added later and doesn't
match color and is in average condition. However, for the rig and calibrator,
you'd be hard pressed to find a cleaner specimen. I just don't use it much
anymore and want to get a Kx1 for an upcoming vacation trip.

Please respond off list.

2 S/Ns? Not sure what you mean...

No real issues on assembly - except my huge fingers made the tiny parts
sometimes a challenge to put together.

The Elecraft crew was great in helping me, a joy to work with.

A blast to operate!

Re: [Elecraft] New KX1 low power and 20m oscillation

2012-05-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Stan,

I was not available yesterday, so could not respond to your initial post.
The problem is most likely in the Low Pass Filter, so count the turns on
L1 and L2 very carefully - count the number of times the wire passes
through the center of the core. Double check the capacitors in the LPF
for correct values.

You might want to check the current draw during transmit. Assume the PA
transistor should be 50% efficient and there is another 100 ma being
used by the DDS and other circuits, 2 watts should require a total on
500 ma. If the current draw is greater than that, the Low Pass Filter
has a problem and is shunting some of the power to ground. OTOH, if the
current is commensurate with the power produced then the solution will
be found in the Q4 Q5 circuits or the DDS.

Going back to your earlier conclusion that there were oscillations -
yes, that can happen and can give erroneous power indications. If you
were to look at the output on a scope and find the RF waveform looks
"modulated", you can be certain the LPF is not suppressing the harmonics.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX1 low power and 20m oscillation

2012-05-06 Thread Stan Gibbs
I may have been a bit hasty in concluding that there were oscillations on
20m; after I disconnected my K3's 20m antenna, the 20m signal looks fine.
So I may have just been overloading the K3's front end. Not sure why the
40m signal didn't suffer the same issue, though.

Still have a very low power output (1.7W 40m, 2.0W 20m) and I've done all
the suggested troubleshooting in the manual. Components all look in their
proper places and well soldered.

[Elecraft] New K3 AGC users: Please set AGC SLP (slope) to a higher value

2012-05-06 Thread Wayne Burdick
It appears that a setting of 0 for AGC SLP (slope) may cause an
unwanted interaction with the new AGC algorithm (in K3 MCU firmware
rev 4.50/DSP 2.74). For now, please use AGC SLP=1 or higher, and if
you hear anything unusual, let us know.

We'll eliminate this oddity in the next release.

Re: [Elecraft] New AGC FW

2012-05-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gary,

All you said is true --- BUT

I am not trying to be argumentative, but the AGC adjustment that has had
the range increased is the "Threshold" and not the "delay" I would not
necessarily bring this up, but there *is* a menu setting for AGC DLY,
and I do not wish to see owners confused between the Threshold and the
Delay.

In simplistic terms, the "Threshold" is the RF level at which the AGC
begins to be active.

I think those questions are better suited for the manufacturer/distributed

Hi Mike:
Thank you for sharing about the Bulldog supplies. I have never heard of them
before. My first reaction to the pictures is sooo ugly only its mother would
love it. The spec sheets are clear but leave out a few things. Maybe you know.

If it is a switcher what is its noise specification?
The mounting tabs look like they would scratch the desktop. Are there rubber
feet?
Where are the power pole connectors? I guess you would run it with a Rigrunner.
I didn't see any mention of certifications. UL? CE Mark?
I like to buy American. Where are these made?

I recently purchased a Bulldog RDC-55 55A power supply from Rivergate

oscilloscope and was designed to be used in a high-RF environment. I cannot
honestly state that I have been running it for twenty years without a problem,
but those that have seem to find them trouble-free.

I think it's a shame that more people don't know about them. ..

[Elecraft] New AGC FW

2012-05-06 Thread Gary Gregory
*Hi All,

I have been testing the new settings available with the new FW.

The original settings allowed setting the AGC from 2 thru 8. The new
settings allow you to increase the delay of AGC onset from 2 through 20.

The effect you *hear* is that QSB becomes more rapid (expected behaviour)
but the clarity of multiple signals becomes much clearer. As an example,
tuning into the pileup of stations calling 7O6T enables each of the
callsigns of the stations is much easier to pick out. I have not detected
any mushy audio effects using a setting from 14-18 but occasionally you get
a louder audio from some stations.

I noticed you do have to reduce your AF gain somewhat to compensate for the
increase in audio but you do this while you adjust the AGC. I have been
using PF2 to switch between normal use and AGC adjustment for convenience.

On 10M I had some QRN appear and activated the NB and found the NB
eliminated the noise completely but did not notice any audio artifacts in
audio from strong signals. I have settled on a setting of 12-14 for normal
use now and I am evaluating whether this should become my *normal* setting
for *daily* use.

I will leave it to Wayne to respond with the relationship of the new
settings to S units but it appears to me that this improvement should
resolve many of the issues experienced when working a pileup with even more
refinements expected in the future.

My observations are a work in progress and I am sure others will alert the
group as they have a chance to play with the new FW.

regards,

Gary

  To all,

I had a computer crash yesterday and have spent the weekend reinstalling ham
radio software and interfaces on a replacement pc. I almost have everything
working except that I still can't get DX4WIN to key the K3 in RTTY AFSK A mode.

I use MMTTY and DX4WIN. Maybe someone can help refresh my memory. I have
the K3 Data Mode set at AFSK A. I have always used AFSK A with the K3. The K3
PTT-Key setup in Configurator is set as DTR - RTS. If I run MMTTY outside of
DX4WIN, under MMTTY Setup, TX tab, I have PTT & FSK port set at None. If I go
into DX4WIN and bring up the RTTY window and then do an Alt-S, I show MMTTY
Keying setup as Vox and key line set as DTR. I am using Com1 for radio control
between the pc and K3.

I can receive fine, but just cannot key the K3. I wonder how you are setup?
It was working perfectly until the crash!

  Thanks,

it's a riot.

The remaining website relates to hamcow itself as well as the expedition

A lot of planning went into this.

Could it be selecting the wrong filter (different band), perhaps?
Suggest measuring the voltage at each output on the terminal blocks
inside the KRC-2, as you change bands

OK, another update.

I tried the PA alignment procedure with the K3 utility. The 5 watt

reinstalled. Same error

Guess this will be a call to Elecraft tomorrow, unless someone in this

[Elecraft] KRC2 Failure

2012-05-06 Thread Jim Brown
For about two years, I've had a pair of KRC2s in my SO2R station, each
driving a WX0B switching matrix for W3NQN filters. They have worked
fine. Friday, our power was off so that PG&E could do some maintenance,
so I pulled power from a bank of power pole outlets that feeds one of
the KRC2s to minimize discharge of my backup batteries. After restoring
power, the KRC2 has failed, in the condition that the WX0B matrix (only
relays) does not pass signal. If I remove power from the KRC2 the WX0B
box does pass signal.

Any ideas as to what would cause this failure?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3} CocoaModem & MacLoggerDX

2012-05-06 Thread Bill Frantz
I just use cocoaModem (CCM) standalone.

Now here's the big disconnect. I was describing the PSK window,
an I gather you are trying to use CCM for RTTY. Sorry for that.
I have RTTY on my "to learn someday" list, perhaps after
screwing up enough courage to try for my first CW QSO.

A few minutes playing with the RTTY interfaces show that the
"Wideband RTTY" interface operates much like the PSK interface.
It has two waterfalls, so you click in the correct waterfall to
tune the receiver and there are a few other differences.

There are two other RTTY windows, "RTTY" and "Dual RTTY", but I
couldn't quite get them to work. I think they involve turning
the tuning knob on the K3, which will also shift the transmit
frequency. :-( Perhaps this is a use for RIT. (I really have a
lot to learn about the K3.)

When you do Alt-S you will want to show MMTTY Keying as "PTT Control"
and DTR (based on your K3 settings).

Note your K3 "PTT-Key" is "backward" as several packages (e.g., N1MM
Logger and Writelog) limit PTT to RTS and/or limit CW to DTR.

I've been doing that to feed my SDR-IQ and it does not seem to be
a sensitivity problem.

*NOTE* the RX Out/In loop is *after* the transmit lowpass filters
and as such they will impact the ability of your QSR-1 to receive
on bands above the one in use on the main receiver.

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supplies

2012-05-06 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I have a pair of RS-35A - one for each K3 (yes, it's overkill) one of
which is 20 years old - with nary a problem. In addition, I have an
RS-12A that I use for miscellaneous "12V loads" and low power testing.

Astron "RS" series analog supplies were somewhat unreliable 35 years
ago when the standard pass transistor was the 2N3055 and *sockets*
due to heating and the limited current capability but that was a long
time ago and has been resolved by the move to the 2N3771 and better
installation/manufacturing techniques.

Like any device, the supply should be cleaned/maintained on a regular
basis ... pay special attention to the screws on the capacitor and
the output studs as they tend to loosen over time.

For all practical purposes, nearly all mics likely to be used with ham
gear are low impedance mics. As an audio professional, I own a bunch of
low impedance pro mics, some of which have fairly low output. All work
just fine with every ham rig I've ever plugged them into. All you need
is a properly wired cable adapter.

Although I don't own any high-Z mics and haven't tried any with a K3, I
would expect them to work fine too, simply because the K3 has such great
adaptability in the form of mic gain and TXEQ.

I can't comment on changes to firmware and its documentation.

No. The new DSP AGC changes are completely independent of the hardware
AGC time constant.

Increasing the size of C238 was experimental (maybe even "dodgy", in
hindsight, to use the vernacular). It may help with much stronger
signals (S9+20 or so is where hardware AGC really kicks in). But I
think we've now demonstrated that in-band IMD in dense S3-S5 pile-ups
can be reduced with DSP AGC changes.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA3 misbehaving

2012-05-06 Thread Steve Reed
All,

Here's the latest on my K3, now that I'm back from 7QP and can put it up on
the bench and focus on this.

When the PA setting is set to "normal", I can in fact hear the relay click
when I turn the power control past 12 watts. However the display keeps
indicating "Hi Curr" and kicks it all back to 12 watts or lower. As you
turn the power knob up, you can see the power setting increase, but "Hi
Curr" keeps flashing in the display. This is all *without* the K3
transmitting. Go into transmit mode and all you get is definitely 12 watts.

The serial number is 5662.

I plan on calling Elecraft about this tomorrow. In the meantime, anyone
have some ideas?

[Elecraft] K3 Mic Gain

2012-05-06 Thread Gary
I recently decided to test a very old low output/low impedance hand mic on
my K3 when I soon found some confusing information in the latest K3 manual.
My K3's firmware is current. I have two concerns: first, pg. 20 of the
owner's manual mentions additional mic gain can be enabled by tapping the 3
button in the MAIN:MIC SEL menu but when I tried the radio responded with
"N/A". I researched the firmware notes and found a change to this control
was made back in MCU 4.31 so that this gain 'boost' (to the front panel mic
only) can be enabled/disabled by pressing the 7 button, not the 3 button as
shown in the manual. Also the "boost" indicator has changed from ' to a
"high bar" symbol. I'm unclear on the "DSP mic boost (H or Hi)" reference in
the notes. I hope corrections to the K3 owner's manual pages 20 and 52 are
on Elecraft's to do list.

The second concern involves mic impedance. Except for a brief mention of
"Low-Z (~600 ohms)" on pg. 13 and "MIC MONO; hi- or low-Z" on pg 20 I
haven't found any mention of where Elecraft differentiates between high and
low mic impedance nor what may be too high or too low. Do any of you more
experienced K3 users and audio professionals know?

[Elecraft] RTTY Keying problem

2012-05-06 Thread N4QS

I have the
K3 Data Mode set at AFSK A.

Thanks,

Many tks fer the feedback. You will be very happy wid ur k2 radio. I have

the main transceivers used! Now its the K3 as in the present dx to 706T all

Hey everybody:

I can verify an amazIng opening on *40 metres* early this AM @ 0500 mountain
time.when I worked HK1MW with only one watt into my trusty homebrew wire
vertical with 4 counterpoise wires. He had to ask for several fills but
only becus of rude operators from EU who simply not stand by until he cud
make out the final "z" in my call. But to his Korean doggedness, he kept
with it until we had a complete QSO.

I was thrilled, as this was my very very first QSO with a KX1 (traded for,
but new to me, built a year ago). I ckecked the power out later wid an OHR
WM-2.

Thanks for letting me share this small vIctory, important when pain prevents
sleep and I spend 24 hours a day "living" in this old wheelchair (!).
Thanks to all the folks at Elecraft as always fer producing such a great rig
as the KX1. It's simply fabulous, IMHO.

2012-05-06 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Wayne,

How does the AGC work with respect to the Sub RX? Do the AGC config settings
affect both the main and sub in the same manner? Will the latest
improvements also be noticeable on the sub RX. While listening to the CW
pileups for 7O6T on the sub RX I felt that I was hearing the mush that
others have described for the first time.

We have about 60 K3 owners testing the K3's new AGC. I'm sure we'll hear
from some of them, but here's a summary of comments they've sent to me so
far:

- copy is much improved in dense pile-up conditions

- signals have more "clarity"

- QSB is more noticeable on weak signals (this is to be
expected on signals that are not activating AGC)

- the noise blanker has become more effective in some cases
(also expected; its effect is not being muted by AGC compression)

I'll be happy to send out additional copies of the new firmware. If all goes
well this should become a beta release next week.

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supplies

2012-05-06 Thread NZ0T
I has an Astron RS-20 that worked great fo 20 years. The only problems I had
were the loosening of the big cap screws and the need to replace the LM723
once. On the other hand I purchased a new RS-35M last January and last week
it decided to stop putting out any DC voltage. Something on the board is
bad I'm sure.

The Astron Power Supplies are great. Don't always believe what people at
Hamfests tell you.

Check the connections inside the chassis and make sure all the mounting and
connection screws are tight before turning the 50 amp supply on. I've been
using the same Astron AS50 for 15 years and it has never failed to operate.

I do this to feed my ancient R-4C as an auxiliary receiver. I built up a
special RX antenna relay switching matrix to manage feeds to the Main

[Elecraft] Power supplies

Mike,
I have used the Samlex SEC1235M supplies for several years with no issues. I
know there have been some fellows who have said the fan noise is objectionable
to them but I have never had the issue. In fact that fan rarely comes on with
my K3 running 100 watts.
Good luck.

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supplies

2012-05-06 Thread Vic K2VCO
This isn't an answer to the question, but a comment about Astron linear power
supplies. I
have twice seen a situation in which the screws that hold the circuit board to
the
capacitors work loose over time. The resultant heat can damage the board. It's
a good idea
to check that the screws are tight every few years.

Having said that, I've found these supplies quite reliable otherwise.

Check on how your sub's antenna is sourced.

[Elecraft] Power Supplies

2012-05-06 Thread mikefurrey
Good Morning Ya’ll

This morning my Astron SS-30M (used regularly for 15 years) went south in a
puff of smoke and voltage on the meter was fluctuating around 10VDC. No damage
to the K3. WHEW! I pulled out my Astron VS-50M (haven’t used in 15 years) and
its voltage was also fluctuating a bit (maybe needs to reform caps?) (I’ll try
it later on a ... should I say ... a radio I will not worry about too much ...
or build a load for it). At a local swapfest last weekend a seller had several
Astron power supplies that he was selling as parts units. He commented that
they were unreliable.

That being said, what are the groups recommendations for a power supply?

I was listening on my 6M beam on the sub on that band.

Get used to it guys. I'm getting older and I'm not giving up the K3.

If the 3 dB does not bother you, then I would say "do it".

[Elecraft] Using RX ANT OUT for a second receiver

2012-05-06 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Any reason not to use a magic-tee splitter between the RX ANT OUT and RX
ANT IN ports on a K3 (no antenna tuner) to feed the received signals
simultaneously to a second receiver? I want to be able to use my main
antennas with my QS1R for Reverse Beacon functions. I realize that will
cost 3+ db on each port, but that doesn't look like a show-stopper.

[Elecraft] No SubRX on 30M

2012-05-06 Thread Robby.VY2SS
I don't believe I ever tried to run split on 30M before so I don't know if it
was always this way or not.
When I called the 7O on 30M I was suprised that I could not hear the pile up
on the subRX. I can hear background noise in my right ear but when I see a
signal on the P3 and tune the subRX to it I hear no signal. Hear it fine on
the main RX. All other bands I use it works as it should. Checked the docs
cannot see where it might be disabled.

I know where you are at a good day nets me 3-3 1/2 hrs of sleep a night then
up and into the shack. I'm waiting on my K2 so still using my IC-703 Plus
with W4RT duel filters it does a good job still waiting to compare the 2
radios. Finally made a QRP contact with 7O6T 5w on 17m 02:37 5/6/12 was very
pleased but had a 5x9x20 on him just luck.

I knew I should have stayed up all night making contacts.

At 10:30 PM EST 20m was open in MI, my problem was that I did not have any
