Re: [Elecraft] KX-3 - Thank you Elecraft for dropping over 10lbs off my pack weight
In the 1950's, intrepid hams like Wes Hayward, W7ZOI, used to haul tube gear up mountains! These rigs would have had interesting power requirements; several heavy batteries. We have it pretty good today, with our K1's and a small AA battery pack. 73, Rick Dettinger K7MW On Jul 25, 2012, at 10:22 PM, Jessie Oberreuter wrote: > > I can't believe you lugged an 857 on a hike! I usually backpack the K1 with internal batteries and tuner. If I want to go smaller/lighter, I take a ruggedized 40m SST instead. This year, a KX3 may be a possibility! FWIW, I've never run the K1's internal batteries dry on a camping trip, even with a few nights of radio. 'Course I'm usually with other folks, so introvert time with the radio is limited to about three hours a day. What solar panel are you using? I wouldn't expect to get too many hours of good light [here in the Pacific Northwest], since we'd be hiking during the best sun, and I tend to avoid direct sunlight whenever I can. It would make sense, however, if we spent a day at camp before turning back around. I've certainly run a great many portable contests on solar! I have a flexable panel that I could tie to the back of my pack if I thought it would get enough light while hiking to make a difference. Powering the internal KX3 charger from a panel while hiking could be a worthwhile experiment. I can't believe you lugged an 857 on a hike! [Elecraft] [K2] Revised Rework Eliminator(TM) K2 Internal Mic Adaptor User's Guide
Version 6 of the IMA user's guide is now online. Beyond incorporating app note #8, this latest version has been extensively revised to improve readability. If you are an IMA owner, please take a look and let us know if you are using one of the microphones that are still shown as "unverified". If you've never heard of the IMA, but either own an SSB K2, or are considering getting one, you might find the guide a worthwhile read as well. A common 4 to 4.5 Ah SLA would seem better suited. That 7 Ah SLA could not supply a FT-857D for anything but a negligible amount of time. But the KX3, with receive current draw one-fifth that of the FT-857D, will be entirely serviceable for a few hours of causal ops for several evenings with a 4.5 Ah SLA before any recharge will be needed. > ...when I am in camp at night and the sun isn't out I can run all I want > and not drain it. I carry a small 5W 144/440 FM HT (with DC power cord and clips to the SLA battery, plus long-range non-rubber-duck antenna) programmed with ham and public service frequencies for the area. I carry a small AM/FM good-performance AM/FM broadcast radio. (The small new SDR-technology Tecsun PL-380 and PL-390 are great, especially the PL-390 with its larger ferrite bar AM antenna.) Someday when I have a KX3, I'll probably prefer the K1 for backpacking. The summer months are bad camping and hiking months...especially in 2012. After the faux winter the US just had, insects, ticks, chiggers, etc. are out in greater numbers than they've been in decades. Plus its hot and area stream levels are way down. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA USB Keyboard
Rick, I don't have to *go* there, I have already *been* there. All that Apple produced in the 1970 through 1990 period was proprietary. Yes one addition to the Apple II was 3.5 inch drives. I modified several Segate 3.5 inch drives to work with the Apple system because the price for the apple drives was more than 5 times the price of the Segate drive. The current pricing situation may have evened out, but the early marketing practices of Apple have soured my taste buds - if it has an Apple name on it, I will look the other way. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/25/2012 10:32 PM, Rick Prather wrote: > Don't go there Don! > > BTW, the fact that Apple doesn't use a BIOS, or a Register is not a negative > in my mind! > > Also, I don't remember Apple II's using 3.5 floppies.. > > Wow, I see this train leaving the tracks! > > Rick > K6LE > > On 7/25/2012, at 6:10 , Don Wilhelm wrote: > >> I am really not surprised. >> Anything "Apple" has been "apple-centric" since day one. >> >> I recall modifying standard 3.5 inch floppy drives so they would work with >> the Apple II computers. >> >> Apple does a lot of "strange stuff" to maintain its differences. [Elecraft] KX-3 - Thank you Elecraft for dropping over 10lbs off my pack weight
I am loading up for a 10 mile backpacking trip this weekend and was going through some weights this evening, along with cleaning my Simmerlite stove and digging up some of my other gear. When I have gone on trips in the past I have taken my FT-857D. My favorite antenna is a Jumper dipole (sectional - has spade connectors between each consecutively lower frequency band segment 6 to 40 meters) and that is what I will continue to use, though I may try some other ideas as time goes on. My set up before was right about 15lbs. This included the FT-857D, battery, mic, key, antenna, and support rope. My total station weight for the KX3 is just 3.7lbs! This includes the following: Jumper dipole and 50' of 550 chord = 11.4oz KX3 with KXPD3 = 28.4oz Power wire = 1.1oz Mic/cable = 5.4oz Headphones = .4oz 8AA batteries = 7.8oz 6w solar panel = 5.3oz Total oz is 59.8, or 3.7375lbs. That is pretty cool. One caveat is the internal charger is not installed in the rig yet, so it will go up a tad in weight when I get that. I am also thinking of using my AA's externally with 2x 4 battery cases. This way I can charge them easier off the solar panel. What I am probably going to do for this weekend is still use my 7Ah SLA - that comes in at 85.8oz, or 5.36lbs. It is a big weight gain, but when I am in camp at night and the sun isn't out I can run all I want and not drain it. I am sure weights will fluctuate a bit, but given the weight of the rig and the low current consumption its amazing what all can go along and at minimal weight. Some die-hard backpackers would still say this is too much weight, but I am also a die-hard Ham so I'll take my 10lb weight loss and still be 4lbs or so over what I could be for the enjoyment of Ham radio on the trail. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA USB Keyboard
Rick, That *may* be due to the USB HID boot mode issue I speculated about. Macs don't have BIOS like PCs, and so the Apple keyboards may not implement boot mode support. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA USB Keyboard
I was surprised to learn that an Apple keyboard won't work. Funny, since a PC keyboard works fine on an Apple! I tried two, an original unit that came with my Cube and the Aluminum one that came with my iMac. Neither worked. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW paddles
Gentlemen, I had a breakthrough today with my KX3 paddles. I disassembled them, and cleaned the pivot pin. I found that the contact screws are 'cupped' on the end. I used a very fine stone and removed the sharp edge as I could see with my magnifier that the edges of the cup had made an indentation on the brass plating on the contact post. I loosened the screw and rotated each post about 90 degrees and re-tightened the screws. A quick polish with a "Scotchbrite" pad and they were done. I then removed the two screws that align the spring. Next I mounted a 1/8 dia, 1/16 thick N42 Rare-Earth magnet over each screw hole. The magnets are arranged so that they "repel" not attract. I then reassembled the paddles adding just a touch of "White" lubricant from a spray can (sprayed on a clean surface and used a Q-Tip to apply small amount to pivot pins). Result, not enough repel force. I then added another identical magnet (just get it near and it will align itself perfectly) to each arm. The result is now perfect. The paddles are smooth, free moving and after a contact adjustment, work perfectly. A very light touch, and positive return. And, no run-away dits or dahs. And, no more dits or dahs when I press down on the finger pieces as before. More tests to follow, but so far I'm pleased. bill nr4c -Original Message- From: Rick Tavan N6XI [mailto:rta...@gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 2:03 AM To: Ralph Parker Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW paddles Actually, I have found the KX3 paddle surprisingly comfortable. I've been using it both at home and outdoors. Of course, if I were using the KX3 as a long-term, fixed station radio, then I would plug in a high quality, heavyweight paddle. I have several. But for home testing and casual operating, the KXPD3 is quite good. The handles are small for my average-size hands but that hasn't been the issue I thought it would be. I send as well with it as I do with my larger paddles. I just have to be a little more careful when reaching for it and, because it's attached to the radio on a crowded desk, it isn't always in the optimum position. Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware upgrade
Thanks Steve. Wayne uses this technique: current menu items are the union of the most recent owners manual and firmware notes since the date of that owners manual. Glad you are up to date! 4.51 is a significant release. There is some CW decode change that should be improved in the next version. But it's nicer now in contests and DX pileups. The latest Utility version is 1.12.3.28. You didn't say where you got the recommended version from, but it is wrong, or for another product utility. Check to make sure you are not running any other applications on you K3 port before you try to download. The K3 cannot share that port with any another application. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA USB Keyboard
I'm not familiar with the P3 firmware, nor your particular keyboard, but one reason that MIGHT prevent it from working is if the P3 firmware relies on USB HID boot mode support, which some wireless devices do not implement. Maybe Paul can comment if boot mode support is required by the firmware 73, ~iain / N6ML On Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 10:06 AM, Terry Schieler wrote: > Any reason that my existing "wireless" USB keyboard would not work with the > P3/SVGA setup? [Elecraft] K2 Amp Key Kit by N0SS
Does anyone have a spare K2 amp keying kit that was produced by Tom N0SS (SK)? It's little "fixes" like this that reminds me of how much Tom offered us and how his presence is missed. There is of course a homebrew version available on Elecraft website, but the N0SS kit was based on a neat little circuit board. If I breadboard it myself, it will probably be a "chop job." 73 de K6SBA David in Santa Barbara, CA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 firmware upgrade
I have routinely been able to update software in both K3s in the usual manner. I tried to update to 4.51 today and the latest K3 urility that comes up on the Elecraft site is 1.12.3.28. This utility will not allow me to update to 4.51. I see that Elecraft recommends K3 utility 1.3.9.2 but I can find no evidence of that one on Elecraft' site. [Elecraft] K3: KXV3 Rx termination
While setting up a transverter for PTT over the coax line with a bias-T ckt, I encountered a surprise when I connected the transverter to the Rx connection of the KXV3. The line went low every time I connected it to the K3. I measured 75-ohms resistance across the Rx BNC on the KXV3! I would have expected it to be capacitively coupled and show infinite resistance. It is not a problem as a custom interface is being built to key the transverter PTT thru a bias-T interface. The interface incorporates dc blocking capacitors to the K3 on both Tx and Rx coax lines. The customer wants a single coax line between the K3 and the transverter, thus PTT over the shared coax line (I suspect the transverter is to be placed remotely from the radio and run on a separate dc power source). 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-QRT, 1296-?, 3400-? Re: [Elecraft] matching cw filters
Scott, If you need narrow filters in both receivers, I would wait on the 200 Hz filters until you can get both at the same time and specify "filter matching." Given the variability of crystals, the filter offsets tend to vary from batch and it is sometimes difficult to match an arbitrary offset across batches. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] matching cw filters
Hi Scott! If I understand your question correctly, you have a K3 with the KRX3 sub-receiver installed and now you want to add CW filters for both but are not sure as to whether you should order and/or install matching filters in both. Firstly, the only reason to purchase matching filters at the same time is to insure diversity receive coverage such as low signal work on 160 meters with specialized antennas. If that is not your goal, then it really does not matter. Secondly, matching offsets on CW filters only applies to the five pole filters. (200Hz & 500Hz). If you are purchasing the 8 pole filters (250Hz & 400 Hz), there is a 0 offset so there is nothing to match. Thirdly, you do not have to have the same filters in the Main and Sub-Receivers. For example you could have narrow filters in the Main to allow copying of the DX station and moderate filters in the Sub to listen for the pileup. I hope this answers your questions. 73, Charles, N2SO On 7/24/2012 10:44 PM, Scott Dunlavey wrote: > going to order some cw filters ... what I would like to do is this... > (with a sub rx!) get 400 Hz X 2... and 200 Hz x 2... my question is, > would it be better to wait on the 200 Hz if I cant get both 200 Hz at > the same time or can I get one at a time... get the other later on... > > > scott > w2ntv > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > -- Test Charles R Tropp Staten Island NY 10314 USA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
