Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mic connector options
The Heil adapter for connecting a 1/8 plug to the 8-pin front panel jack is the AD-1-K. I have my headset connected to the rear panel MIC connector and my computer sound card connected to the rear panel LINE-IN connector. I have not had any problems with it other than forgetting to change the mode to DATA then wondering why I have no audio on the digital modes. As others have mentioned, you may need to just turn off the MIC+LINE setting as this is how my K3 is set up. 73, Mike KI0HA - Original Message - From: Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com To: Bill Frantz fra...@pwpconsult.com Cc: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, May 16, 2013 11:25:07 PM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mic connector options Bill, I would suggest that you can obtain a Heil Kenwood adapter that is used for the Elecraft ProSet-K2 (I forget the exact Heil designation) that will allow you to connect the CM500 mic - you will also need a 1/8 inch stereo female to 1/4 inch male adapter to match the headphone jack on the adapter. If using that adapter, you would need to unplug the MH2 and plug in the CM500 (with the adapter) and adjust the mic gain. OTOH, If you want to construct a box with a switch, that will work too. In any case, I would suggest you turn off MIC+LINE unless you are also using a computer to send pre-recorded messages. When you switch to digital modes, the mic sel should be set to LINE IN only - the audio input settings for SSB and digital modes are independent in the K3. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/16/2013 7:35 PM, Bill Frantz wrote: I have been trying to get my CM500 headset running with my K3. Using the MH2 mic plugged into the front panel with MIC SEL to FP.L bias in the voice modes (AM, FM SSB, CS) while MIC SEL is set to rP.L bias for the DATA modes. MIC+LIN is set to On for all modes. This setup works well using VOX for transmitter keying in DATA and manually turning VOX off and using PTT when I run voice modes. (I'm mostly a DATA A and AFSK A operator.) If I plug the microphone from the CM500 into the rear panel of the K3, and change MIC SEL to rP.L bias, this division between voice modes and data mode no longer works. Noise in the shack keys the transmitter, and I assume is added to the output signal -- not good. So, my current plan, unless someone says, Hey Dummy!, is to build an interface box which plugs into the front panel MIC connector to route the audio from the CM500 to the K3. I can include a jack for a foot switch to do PTT and set it up so the MH2 is also available. (Thanks Don for the pointer to Universal Radio for the Mic connectors.) My questions are: What to do with the other 3 lines? I can add buttons to UP and DOWN lines to provide another way for tuning the radio, but what does the FUNCTION line do? And, can I parallel the Mic audio from the CM500 and the MH2 or would it be better to switch them? (Fewer switches and modes will make my wife, KI6SLX happier.) [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings
I've noticed strange behavior on both the W2 watt meter and a cross-needle meter when using my K3 on 2 meters. Just curious if anyone has had problems like this? In SSB mode, keying the mic without any audio causes the watt meter to show about 3 watts output power and 3:1 SWR. However If I hold the TUNE button and put out a carrier It shows the expected 7-10 Watts forward with normal low SWR. It also appears to show normal readings while speaking into the mic, but goes to the unusual readings with in between audio peaks. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings
Mike - yes, I've seen the same thing. I can't put my finger on it either but when using the k144xv with my wattmeter, I have high SWR always. Normally I can still run the 5-7 watts into an amp without issues but there are times this high SWR trips things off. Elecraft - it would be nice to finally understand what needs to be done to correct this issues. Very common among the users that are on SSB/CW, not so much FM. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings
I have the same problem even running it with an amp. I wondered if maybe somehow some of the 10M IF was coming through causing the meter to show SWR. But during modulation, the higher power 2 meter signal caused the meter to display correctly. [Elecraft] K3 no power output
Hi, Don: While using K3 (S/N 855) today, the power out of the K3 dropped to '0' in mid-sentence. I was putting out about 50 watts driving an ACOM 2000A. I checked all the obvious things, short of resetting the rig. From the rig straight to a dummy load (by passing the ACOM amp, etc.) there is still zero output in all modes. I'm thinking that I might have popped the low output (10W) finals since there is zero output (If I had popped the finals, I guess that I should still have 10w out). Any ideas before I ship it back to the factory? [Elecraft] Ideal RTTY filter.
This comes from June 2013 QST page 59. According to W7AY: The ideal RTTY filter is 280 Hz wide. Narrowing it further by 60 Hz doubles the error rate. The article references: http://www.w7ay.net/site/Technical/RTTY%20Transmit%20Filters/index.html Which doesn't come out and say the above! It's talking about transmit filters. W7AY doesn't like uneven power in transmit tones either. Anyhow this may confirm what has been said on this reflector. The 350 Hz (AKA 250 Hz) filter is probably the narrowest practical choice for RTTY. 73 de Brian/K3KO - No virus found in this message. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Boost Buck 13.8 V Regulator
Regarding that first regulator, the QSKJ QS-1212CCBA-80W, I have one of those. The IN- and VO- connections are apparently not wired together internally. You can't look inside because the whole thing is potted in some solid substance. In the interest of having all my equipment on a common ground, I wired the IN- and VO- together. Now the red error light is lit all the time (even when those connections are not wired together). And the device shuts down regularly (output voltage drops to zero until power-cycled). I don't know whether the failure was caused by wiring the connections together, or whether it's just coincidence. The thing doesn't make much hash at KX3 receive current levels, but hash increases if you draw more current from it. --Mark K7NEW On 5/15/2013 11:41 AM, Jon Moody wrote: Hi Glenn, I have purchased both of these DC-DC power converters and have been very happy with them. Re: [Elecraft] K7WTG Dayton
Sorry to hear that. I guess I misunderstood what I was told at Visalia. I filled out an order form ($4500) near the end of the exhibit time but didn't place the order because I wasn't sure about the filters I wanted and said at the time I wanted to take advantage of a possible Dayton special. True I didn't say I'd be at Dayton but nobody asked if I would be at Dayton. As I said earlier I go to Dayton every other year and last year I bought a Icom 7700. A couple of months ago I purchased a Icom 7410 as a backup and haven't even taken it out of the box because of a couple of my friends said I really need to look the K3. Between that and couple of the seminars at Visalia sold me on the K3 but it would have been an impulse purchase at the time and I don't do that. That's why I choose to wait. Over the years I've made a few purchases after Dayton and got the Dayton deal when I asked for it. Maybe next year when I come to Dayton again I'll still be in the mood for K3. -Original Message- From: Howard Stephenson [mailto:how...@elecraft.com] Sent: Friday, May 17, 2013 9:57 AM To: k7...@arrl.net Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net. Re: [Elecraft] Ideal RTTY filter.
Anyhow this may confirm what has been said on this reflector. The 350 Hz (AKA 250 Hz) filter is probably the narrowest practical choice for RTTY. This is a point that can not be emphasized too often. The 250 Hz filter has a very rounded top that is being pushed hard to reach Chen's 270 Hz within a fraction of a dB criteria. Further, because of the significant rounding, the filter is not completely phase linear - although it is better than an alternative design that might be absolutely flat for 350 Hz and transition from passband (flat) to stopband (skirts) very suddenly over a 20 to 20 Hz (e.g. 300 Hz at -1 dB and 350 Hz at -6dB). Except for issues of AGC pumping (blocking) and in band IMD, one would probably be better served by using a 400, 500 or 1000 Hz roofing filter with a 300 or 350 Hz DSP filter setting. The difference in IMD3 between 400 Hz and 1000 Hz roofing filters is very small in the context of RTTY - the incremental distance from center to cutoff can not accommodate much more than one additional signal on each skirt and the chance of two very strong signals or more than two strong signals having the right frequency relationship within even a 1 KHz (@ -6dB) bandwidth to create interfering IMD3 is quite small. With modern DSP based RTTY software, the goal should be sufficient roofing filter selectivity to prevent blocking and IMD3 along with DSP filtering that is good enough to reduce the number of signals to the point that the instantaneous peak does not cause distortion in the audio stages or overflow the A/D converter in the sound card. *Beyond that point,* so long as the sound card does not have an excessively high noise floor and/or limited dynamic range (as exhibited by some inexpensive ham products), RTTY performance will be determined almost entirely by the performance of the DSP resonators and the ability of the demodulator algorithm to deal with multipath, and selective fading (ATC). 73, ... [Elecraft] Discounts was: K7WTG Dayton
Hi Gang: While it's nice to be able to get a big show discount... the fact is that those who attend the event are spending a great deal more money then a buyer who just orders on line or over the phone. Those buyers are spending quite a bit for food, lodging, and travel. I submit, that it's much more cost effective to simply buy on line. I'd wager it would cost me over $500 just to be able to walk through the boneyard... and not buy anything. Granted, seeing a product at a show, talking to the vendors, talking to fellow hams and friends, has value.. and that's what you get when you attend a show. That can certainly help you make a decision of buying a particular piece of equipment. Since the vendors have to ship an inventory to shows, I wonder how it is that they are still able to offer discounts. I guess it's due to the volume of sales. And yes, there's some wonderful buzz when a new item debuts at a show, and certainly Dayton is the benchmark of big shows. So, I'm not going to complain about not getting a discount. If I travel that far, (from EPA to Dayton), I want to see my grandkids... the heck with radio gear! After all, I didn't have to spend extra money to stay home. And the money I saved might just buy me a new toy or two. :) 73 de Ray K2ULR KX3 #211 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings
Both my early edition K144XV were not unconditionally stable and were swr intolerant I think you will find that the 3:1 swr is because it is oscillating out of band. Try listening on a scanner. I have experienced this on my two k144xv and g4ddk had the same issue with his. One example produced 162MHz, one 168MHz one around 158MHz. When you tune or speak it stabilizes and generates on 2m My k144xv were fine if I operated at the bottom end of 2m where the swr was 1.1:1 but my antenna swr rose to 1.6:1 at around 144.8MHz and above this point it showed the instability you mentioned Mine were replaced with the later production run k144xv (the one without the centre spacer, but that could just be coincidence!) and the issue has not arisen since Dave G4FRE Message: 19 Date: Fri, 17 May 2013 05:26:24 -0500 From: Michael Eberle mtebe...@mchsi.com To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings Message-ID: 519605d0.20...@mchsi.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed I've noticed strange behavior on both the W2 watt meter and a cross-needle meter when using my K3 on 2 meters. Re: [Elecraft] K7WTG Dayton
Sometimes I think the value of a discount is not in the money you save but rather in the feeling you have of getting some kind of special deal or special treatment. I was at the parts department of a local Chevy dealership a few years ago to buy some minor thing. When the guy was totaling things up he said that I get the 10% senior citizen discount. I said You mean you offer the senior citizen discount for someone who is only 55 ?. He said, No, the discount is for 65 and older. I gladly turned down the discount. Some discounts are not worth getting especially if only 10 percent which barely covers sales tax here in my area of the country. 73, phil, K7PEH On May 17, 2013, at 5:12 PM, Bill b...@w2blc.net wrote: Saving a few bucks on a purchase that you will use heavily for years just does NOT matter. Hello Bill, To our knowledge, Elecraft concentrates in the ham market which is relatively a small one when compared with the institutional sector. Therefore, they choose a business model of excellent customer service and tailor fit products to the ham radio sector. This business model has been proved to be successful. Eric is an excellent marketing personnel and Wayne is an innovative engineer. This is a very good combination. I of course wish Elecraft to grow up to the scale of YKI or even larger. On the other hand, from a very selfish point of view, I like their existing scale so as to maintain the current customer service level. Going back to Dayton discounts, I visited Dayton in 2011 but did not see any real discount on Elecraft products. I once asked them to bring me a KRX3 module so that I could collect it in Dayton (to save some shipping costs). Eventually, at their advice, I collected my KRX3 in New York City where was my next stop after Dayton. But: in Elecraft's case it treats it's customers like no other company (ham or not) that I have ever seen. Case on point. I had a problem with my MH3 mic. In a year I only used it about 3 times but it went bad What did Elecraft do... replaced it! None of my YKI (I now call them Yucky) radio problems every had this level of service. Most ended in bitter disappointment. The level of service that Elecraft have given me, both from a warranty perspective and from the level of service for none warranty issues is something the the other companies should emulate. But don't. Shame on them, For my money Elecraft is the best value around. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings
Mike: First e-mail k3supp...@elecraft.com or call them (831-763-4211) for further guidance. As Dave says the center spacer was removed very early on when some stability issues arose. I have an early pre-production board, but it was stable with and now without that spacer. This sounds like something new but may be something that you can tackle yourself. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Michael Eberle Sent: Friday, May 17, 2013 7:57 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings Dave, Yes that is exactly what it appears to be doing. My frequency counter is showing RF at 153.600 MHz regardless of what part of the band it is tuned to. I removed the K144XV Reference Lock Board and there was no change. Is there anything that can be done to correct this, or do I need to send it back to Elecraft? I just bought it 2 months ago so it shouldn't be an early production run board. Re: [Elecraft] Ideal RTTY filter.
Brian K3KO wrote: This comes from June 2013 QST page 59. First of all, Chen's article is about transmit filtering which is not directly translatable to optimal receive filtering. Second, the cascade effect of the K3 crystal filter and DSP filter must be considered in determining the net receive bandwidth. So very different net receiver bandwidths result depending on what DSP bandwidth is used with the engaged crystal filter bandwidth, e.g., KFLA250 which is really a 370 Hz filter. Third, the ideal receive bandwidth for optimal decoding is not the same as the transmit bandwidth for minimum QRM. Depending on the decoder, a receiver bandwidth of around 400 Hz is optimum ... unless there is such a heavy QRM situation that a better overall system trade-off is obtained with narrower, e.g., 250 Hz, net IF bandwidth. A transmit filter of 280 Hz is an optimum trade-off between minimizing QRM to neighboring QSOs and maintaining signal integrity for the intended receiver. Finally, this transmit filter can be implemented in either the radio or the encoder. MMTTY, for example, provides a number of transmit filter bandwidths and the default 48-tap TX bandwidth for AFSK meets Chen's proposal. Ed W0YK According to W7AY: The ideal RTTY filter is 280 Hz wide. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
