[Elecraft] KX3: 6m Temp Comp Testing
I have completed the Temperature Compensation Procedure for the KX3 on 6m. Initially, I tried using the 5th harmonic of my 10-MHz OCXO since it is very accurate and stabile, but harmonic level was inadequate to run the temp comp procedure, so I used my XG3, instead. I did run it a long time to stabilize the signal and constantly measured frequency on my counter. Drift of the XG3 was less than 2-Hz over a couple hours of continuous running (ran off the same 14vdc PS as the KX3). Before running the temp comp, Drift of the KX3 was 54-Hz upward running a test at 5w output on a sequence to duplicate conditions running JT65: 50-seconds key-down/70-seconds Rx, and repeated ten sequences (20-minutes total). Power was monitored on a Bird43 with 25w termination. After temp comp was complete the worst drifting occurred in the first ten seconds of the first sequence (+13 Hz). After that there was no more than 10-Hz drift with the trend toward less drift as the test proceeded. The last few sequences drift was +5 Hz. I monitored Osc. Temp and PA temp with the KX3 display and Osc temp reached 54c at the end of 20-minutes running; PA temp was also 54c. Osc. temp would drop slightly during the 70-second Rx portion of the sequence. Temp compensation seems to work well to reduce frequency drift in transmit. Rx frequency is within 1-Hz if not transmitting. I did feel the KX3 body during the temp comp procedure and it was much warmer to touch once 52c was reached then the radio with heat sink runs after 20-minutes of JT65 simulation. So I can say the heat sink is making a difference protecting the final transistors. Internal heat still rises significantly so one needs to do the temp. comp. to reduce freq. drift. details: http://www.kl7uw.com/KX3.htm 73, Ed - KL7UW http://www.kl7uw.com Kits made by KL7UW Dubus Mag business: dubus...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and FLDIGI
I think most of those on the linuxham (or Win Fldigi) group would recommend you use Flrig to control your radio when using Fldigi. There is a version of Flrig for each of the three major OS's. I *do* suggest you join one or the other group - linuxham for Linux and OS X, Win Fldigi for windows. I use Fldigi with Flrig with my K3. When I get a chance, I will get my KX3 set up to run with Fldigi/Flrig, but it will be either Friday or Saturday before I can do that. Either way, I use macros within Fldigi to control the modes on my radio especially on MARS nets where phone and digital are used on the same frequency. Receiving data is not a huge deal in USB (phone) but I still prefer to use a macro to swap between USB and DATA A. You do have to make sure you set the *correct* data mode. 73, Joel - W4JBB On 4/22/14, 8:28 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: You might want to try using RigCAT instead of HamLib - choose K3 if KX3 is not available. There is no AUDIO A mode and no characters on the LCD indicate that information. Yes, there is a DATA A Data sub-mode that should be selected for soundcard data modes (except for RTTY where AFSK A provides added advantages for RTTY). For most soundcard data modes, you would want to use DATA A submode in USB. RTTY normally uses LSB, but RTTY is best used in AFSK A data sub-mode. Your data mode software application and the KX3 default settings may be fighting each other. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/20/2014 4:18 PM, Adrien Dessemond wrote: Hi, I am trying to use a KX3 with FLDIGI to do some PSK31 QSO. However whenever I transmit some data with FLDIGI, the USB indicator turns off. Is the rig still in AUDIO-A mode (TX DATA is still shown)? Re: [Elecraft] KE7X KX3 Book and Configuring: KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500
I have four transceivers connected up in such a way that I can use all of them with the KPA500/KAT500 by simply switching the appropriate RF path to the KPA500 RF Input port. The setup is as follows: -- 'Wiper' of four-port coaxial RF switch connects to KPA500 RF Input port -- The four ports of the coaxial RF switch are connected to: K3, KX3, K2, HPSDR -- The TX Enable/Amp Key Lines from ONLY the KX3, K2, and HPSDR are simply paralleled via an assortment of RCA Y adapters and connected to the KPA500 PA Key port. NOTE: The K3's KEY OUT line is *NOT* included in this parallel connection, and is not used at all. -- The K3 is connected to the KPA500 via the KPAK3AUX cable With this arrangement, and ALL transceivers powered 'ON', I can select any of the four transceivers via the RF coaxial switch, and drive the KPA500 to full output without issue. The usual steps are: -- Place the KPA500 into STBY -- Select the desired transceiver via the RF coaxial switch -- Select the desired band etc., and make sure the power level is adjusted appropriately to drive the KPA500. -- Tap the key to send some 'heads-up' RF to the KPA500, and in response, the KPA500 switches to the appropriate band, and the KAT500 switches to the appropriate frequency and pulls the settings from memory. -- Place the KPA500 into OPERATE mode That's it. I understand that paralleling the TX Enable/Amp Key Lines from all of the transceivers is less than optimal, but for these particular transceivers, it has worked fine. Since the K3 is the primary radio in the shack, it always remains on. (I have NOT tried any of this with the K3 powered down) I have also used this arrangement with all other transceivers powered OFF except for the K3 and whichever other radio I want to use. For example, if I want to use the KX3, the K3 and KX3 are both powered ON, but the other transceivers can be OFF. The KX3 will drive the KPA500 to about 175 watts or so, depending upon band. I've used this arrangement for quite a while without any issues, but I make no claim that there are not any dangers in doing things this way. If there are, I haven't discovered them - yet. 73, Dale WA8SRA Jack, Thanks for the detailed explanation. So, if the K3 pulls the keyline to ground and the STBY/OPER switch is inoperative as a result, then why would power cycle on KPA500 change things. I mean, I assume that the keyline is still pulled to ground by the K3. But, I admit that I am not an electronics guy as you others so I do not fully understand all of the stuff that goes on in these things. 73, phil, K7PEH On Apr 22, 2014, at 10:18 PM, Jack Brindle jackbrin...@me.com wrote: There appears to be some misconceptions in this discussion. First, the information flow from the K3 to the KPA only occurs on the band lines and the key line. Auxbus communications is one-way, from the KPA to the K3. The KPA does not listen on the Auxbus. There is also something else going on that is in play here. When the K3 is powered off, the pull-ups on the band lines (and the key line, I believe) continue to work. They continue to pull the lines to Vcc. But with the K3 off, Vcc is now 0 volts. This means that a short time after the K3 powers off the KPA will see all zeros on the band lines, and will switch to 60 meters. After this, RF coming into the KPA will cause it to switch to the appropriate band, and all band switching will occur with incoming RF as long as the band lines do not change. Of course, there is one other signal in play here. The Key line is important since it causes the KPA to switch into transmit. We have seen the K3 pull the Key line to ground at times, which just may be what you are seeing. If the KEY line is active, the KPA will not switch from STBY to OPER. For this to happen the KEY line must be high. The best way to connect two transceivers to the KPA is to use a physical switch to select the transceiver. A five-pole two position switch will do for the band and key lines, plus a coax switch of the RF. In short, you may get things to work with the description from Freds book. But if the key line becomes driven low by the off transceiver for any reason, you can expect weird things to happen. Jack Brindle, W6FB Elecraft Engineering On Apr 22, 2014, at 5:04 PM, Phil Hystad phys...@mac.com wrote: Don, OK, I may be expecting too much. Actually, I am not sure if I was expecting as much as I was a little bit surprised by the behavior. I didn't think that the KPA500 and KX3 communicated with each other other than RF and Key line but maybe that was enough of a difference from the K3. The K3 of course in my case has the AUX cable connections with the KPA500 and KAT500. It is not a big deal as long as this is the way it is expected to work. I was not sure if I had done something wrong or not. But, just picked up W1AW/5 MS QRP power with the KX3. Actually, it was about 6 watts. 73, phil, K7PEH On Apr 22, 2014,

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries
Slava, I understand your frustration. However, Elecraft has no control of the package once it is delivered to UPS. If you request ground shipment, and UPS says it will take 7 days to get the package to you, they will take the full seven days. I've seen cases, on my own packages, where UPS will actually hold the package at their distribution facility if it gets there ahead of what they deem is the appropriate delivery schedule, rather than just delivering the package. [Elecraft] W2 fault?
Hi everyone, I have a W2 Watt meter and 2KW sensor that I haven't used for some time. I loaned it out to a club mate who reported it DOA. The unit self-tests OK and I've swapped the 8 way RJ45 cable for an out of the packet new one. I've tested it thoroughly on my bench and have found a few issues that I would like help resolving: When the sensor is plugged into port 1 I get full scale (high) SWR with no rf applied. When RF is applied no forward power is registered. When I plug the sensor into port 2, the meter functions, but 100W input from my K2 is reported as 80W. I have checked the K2 with other power meters and the all say 100W +/- 5%. The W2 also reports an SWR of 1.5:1 when I use any of my dummy loads (or antennas!). They can't all be bad on every HF band! It looks like I may have two issues - a duff connector on S1 and potentially a calibration issue with the sensor? Does that sound reasonable? What action can I take to fix that as the W2 is not designed to be user serviceable? I am happy working with SMDs though! 73 Steve M0BPQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] KE7X KX3 Book and Configuring: KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500
Good morning all. Sorry I haven't chipped in before. I think Jack's comment ...something else going on... is right on. The band line pull-ups in the K3 are somewhat problematic. They weren't there in the first placed (which was good design) but were added to the K3 early on to compensate for band decoders that didn't have pull ups (not good design). So that explains why the KPA500 shows 5.3 MHZ when the K3 is turned off. However, neither of the key lines from the K3 (KEY OUT and KEYOUT_LP in ACC, K3 schematic of June 2010) are pulled up. One is an open drain and one an open collector. These two lines are wire-ORed together in the KPA500. Wire-OR means either KEY OUT or KEYOUT_LP or both can key the KPA500. So I don't think that is what is causing the behavior you see. I don't have the KX3 in the mix here at the moment but I tried the following: K3 on 15 m, KPA on in Operate mode showing 21 MHZ. Turn K3 off. KPA switches to Standby immediately and then shows 5.3 MHZ a second or two later (significant delay there). K3 still off. KPA switch from Standby to Operate and back and forth no problem. K3 still off, KPA in Standby. Ground the KPA keying line PA KEY. KPA can switch to operate and back and forth no problem. When in Operate the * shows on the display as expected (saying the amp key line is low). Another culprit might be DIGOUT1, although that too is an open collector output. I wouldn't expect that to be doing anything when the K3 is off but if you see a _ in the KPA display, that means the amp is inhibited when you try to key because INHIBIT in enabled and DIGOUT1 is low. Firmware: K3 4.83, KPA 1.38 What is your firmware? There was a firmware change in the KPA a while ago that fixed a power up problem. In short, you may get things to work with the description from Fred's book. But if the key line becomes driven low by the off transceiver for any reason, you can expect weird things to happen. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries
For USPS Priority, they usually deliver in 2 or 3 days, and they're trying to get more predictable. No Guarantees. I've had Priority Mail packages take weeks, but that's unusual. It's a great service for the price. UPS will tell you the exact day, and the package will arrive that day. Amazon ships from many warehouses, and I'm sure they have one in New York state -- the package doesn't have that far to go once the order is placed. Elecraft is in California. A ground package is going to stay on the ground all the way. You can check the UPS zone chart because the zone number is the number of days in transit. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries
$999? Must have been a big item, Slava! We all have frustrations of this nature from time to time. When I was assembling my KX3 I came across a bad part (or possibly I made it bad). That was on a Friday afternoon, and by the time I called the last mail had gone out. So my replacement arrived 5 days later, the following Wed. Very frustrating, given I'm only 300 miles from Elecraft. It was one of those parts you could not work beyond, and also one unavailable in any local hardware stores (and I have lots of those). But once the package arrives the frustrations end, fortunately :-) 73, Phil w7ox On 4/23/14, 5:03 AM, Slava Baytalskiy wrote: I chose UPS Ground. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries
I do a lot of shipping, and here is what I have found... For most domestic orders we ship using Priority Mail. They deliver 6 days a week to almost everywhere, including PO boxes. They provide tracking and some level of insurance, and you can increase the insurance for low cost. For higher value domestic packages we tend to use Fedex Ground. Usually a day or two slower, but better tracking and I feel better about the insurance process. When I need faster, I find 2-day service to be a reasonable cost. For international we almost always use USPS Priority or Priority Express Mail. Exceptions include large packages. Fedex has a special program that gives ~70% discounts for international packages over 10 lbs. One note about reliability. I find both to be extremely reliable. We have never lost a package in the US, and only a couple out of thousands internationally. There are several countries where theft is an issue, but for the most part they are all quite good. I don't use UPS for outgoing shipments, but I use them for incoming because they get here earlier in the day. 73, Larry N8LP On 4/23/2014 11:07 AM, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: Date: Wed, 23 Apr 2014 09:47:55 -0400 From: Joe Subich, W4TVli...@subich.com To:elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries Message-ID:5357c48b.2070...@subich.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed USPS Priority Mail delivers to any address in the US six days a week and retail prices are generally 15 to 20% less expensive than UPS Brown (Ground). 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] KE7X KX3 Book and Configuring: KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500
Given the fact that band data pullup resistors are included in the K3, the only certain way to assure you are going to get what you want would be to disconnect the K3 to KPA500 cable when using another transceiver. There may be a possibility of leaving the K3 powered on with the cable connected, but that sounds 'iffy' to me because the K3 would be determining the band that the KPA500 selects. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/23/2014 9:58 AM, Cady, Fred wrote: Good morning all. I ordered one last year and had not problems, but a number of posts like yours have cropped up in the last several months. It is a very nicely engineered modification. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries
Here in NJ I have received USPS Priority Mail packages from Elecraft in 3 days. USPS Priority Mail beats the pants off UPS most all the time for packages sent from west of about the Mississippi River. And they are cheaper too. Now for my pet peeve with Elecraft... The only one too... When they ship Priority mail their mailing program uses the USPS formula for calculating the cost. This is sometimes a lot higher than using the Flat rate boxes. I once sent them a picture of their package with plenty of room to spare inside a flat rate box. The cost was slightly higher than half the charged cost. To their credit they did make an adjustment. As in all things it could be a trade off as using the flat rate may increase the cost to those closer to the mother ship. Also to their credit they at least offer USPS service. I have not ordered from companies that did not offer it as I felt the UPS price for a small item was exorbitant. Not applicable to Elecraft, as far as I can tell, but in quite a few cases the shipping department is not a cost of doing business but a profit center. 73, Bob K2TK ex KN2TKR (1956) K2TKR On 4/23/2014 8:15 AM, MontyS wrote: 5 business days - 7 calendar days, is nominal for coast-to-coast UPS ground. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries
My 2 cents. FedEx ground will leave my shipment on their dock so it does not deliver early. They need to protect their overnight premium rate. UPS will take 7 days on a 7 day lane. USPS, depending on the lane, you may get your priority package ahead of time. Sometimes overnight depending on the regions. However, USPS does not make outbound on time for all packages. Partly because some are overlooked, or they simply do not have the capacity with their contracted carriers. However, they go everywhere. IMHO FedEX ground has the best track record for being on time with the least amount of footprints on my box. And no, I do not work for any of the above. 73, Dan -- KM6CQ Dan Baker www.km6cq.com @danielbaker DM09dn SKCC: 8260 NAQCC: 6817 QSL via LoTW, eQSL, Direct. [Elecraft] Fwd: KE7X KX3 Book and Configuring: KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500
Let me add my two pesos to this discussion. I have my KX3 and K3 sharing the KPA500 and KAT500 per Fred's book. I noticed the same strange stuff happening as in the original post when I first got my station set up. One could go through a lot of hoo-ha trying to connect / disconnect things but for me, there was a fairly simple way to get 'er done - If I have been using the K3 with the amp/tuner and I want to use the KX3, the first step is to power off the amp, then power off the K3. I then power on the KX3 and flip the two position coax switch over to the KX3. Power on the amp and press the desired band button on the amp. If you are going to use the same band as you did on the K3 all is ready. If you are going to a different band, then one small shot of RF (hit the dah side of your keyer paddle) is all it takes and you are good to go. That shot of RF is so the KAT500 is on the same page as your KX3! I've been doing this for months and it works fine for me. Jim / W6JHB On Tuesday, Apr 22, 2014, at Tuesday, 10:18 PM, Jack Brindle wrote: There appears to be some misconceptions in this discussion. In short, you may get things to work with the description from Fred’s book. But if the key line becomes driven low by the “off” transceiver for any reason, you can expect weird things to happen. 73, phil, K7PEH On Apr 22, 2014, at 4:57 PM, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Phil, I think you may be expecting too much. Consider a parallel - a computer communicating with a printer. If you suddenly switch the printer cable to another computer, would you expect the printer to continue printing without any intervention? The printer in this comparison is the KPA500 and the two computers are the K3 and the KX3. It is not unreasonable IMHO to expect that a reset of the KPA500 would be required. If the KPA500 were simply an amplifier with no communications capability with the driving transceiver, switching from one source of RF input to another should proceed without regard to whatever is the driving device, but your KPA500 is more than just an amplifier because it can communicate with the K3 or KX3 driving transceiver. Expecting the KPA500 to switch data streams from two different transceivers with no intervening reset is not realistic. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/22/2014 7:41 PM, Phil Hystad wrote: So, is this normal behavior? Is this designed to work this way or is this a flaw in the design or maybe a missing mini-feature of configuring two different transceivers with the KPA500. I admit to not scouring all of the documentation yet on the expected functionality of the STBY/OPER switch. 73,

Slava, Yes, I was frustrated by how slow UPS ground was getting my K3/0 Mini! But I have it now, and it works great, and the frustration is gone. I also have Amazon Prime, and two day is not always two day. When it's not, their is no recourse. Also, if you pay extra $3.99 or whatever for Amazon 1-day, and they don't deliver, there is no refund. I get mad because I'm rural, and the local UPS guy lives close to me -- so, UPS always says my shipment has been delayed by weather, and the packages end up coming 8 or 9pm at night --- because the driver wants to deliver them on the way home. USPS Priority Small, Medium or Large flat-rate shipping is the best deal in the country for 2-3 day shipping. I sent my K3 back for repair in a large flat-rate box. No problems. I see that you're in New York. Welcome to my pain, if I order anything from the east coast and it travels UPS Ground. Fortunately, I'm two business days away from Elecraft, whether I specify UPS or Priority Mail. The advantage to Priority Mail is that there are Saturday deliveries, at least for the time being. Isn't Amazon Prime great? After holding out for a long time, I recently signed up. No more waiting until I have $35 worth to order, to get the free shipping (and then wait while they take their time to ship). Case in point: I ordered four ARRL books on the weekend. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries
Well, with UPS, delivery time is a crapshoot. I've had normal UPS shipments arrive at the house anywhere from 10 AM up to 8:30 PM. In the latter case, I'm not even talking about the holiday season (it was Halloween). I had given up on that delivery, even though the status showed that it was out for delivery, so we went out for dinner. When we got home, I checked the delivery time on the UPS tracking site, and it was approximately 8:30. Today, I'm waiting for a delivery that was shipped via UPS Second-Day Air. Here it is 1430L, and no package yet. To be fair, though, the delivery commitment is stated as By End of Day. Joining UPS My Choice is a good idea. I can give them authorization, on a one-time or a blanket basis, to leave any package that doesn't require a signature. While UPS deems the QTH to be in a safe delivery area, I have to admit being a bit nervous about a nearly-$800 CrankIR antenna being delivered when we were out for a while yesterday. As luck would have it, though, we were both here when the truck pulled up at about 3 PM. I expressed surprise to someone at Elecraft that they ship high-value packages without requiring a signature, but that was explained to my satisfaction. 73 de Jim - AD6CW On 4/23/2014 8:36 AM, Larry Phipps wrote: I don't use UPS for outgoing shipments, but I use them for incoming because they get here earlier in the day. 73, Larry N8LP __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries
My UPS delivery time is normally quite consistent - between 12 and 12:30 - so if we go out to lunch and errands (which is most every day) we will not be home when the UPS man arrives. Fortunately, I have a waiver of signature and release on file, thanks to UPS MyChoice, so the driver leaves the parcels at the front door. There are times when the sender has explicitly required a signature, and that can cause a delay in delivery. For USPS, the normal carrier and I have a similar arrangement - he also delivers in the 12 to 12:30 timeframe. There are pre-signed delivery slips in the mailbox, and he leaves anything that cannot fit in the mailbox at the front door. I have not been able to make similar arrangements with FedEx, so customers requiring a signature might encounter a day or two delay, but they do not deliver on any regular schedule. I have between 3 and 8 parcel deliveries every week, so I do have more experience than most. Yes, different areas may not be the same as I encounter, but both the UPS man and the USPS carrier know me well. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/23/2014 5:44 PM, Jim Lowman wrote: Well, with UPS, delivery time is a crapshoot. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I try and use USPS when ever possible as they certainly need the business ! We have a very friendly and obliging village PO, best that I've ever used. They don't delivery to my address either, as it's probably not cost effective to go up a half mile of rutted dirt road, but instead, they give me a free large sized PO box . Their Flat Rate, Priority service is both inexpensive (relative), with free containers and quite fast. The only problem is if my package doesn't fit in my box or the lobby boxes are full, I have to pick up, only when they are open. Fortunately it's on my way when I need to go to town. I found out that the UPS drivers are on contract and have to periodically bid for their route. I had one driver that became a good friend, after I pulled him out when he slipped off of my icy road. He came to my door with 'good news' and 'bad news'. I have a package for you, however I slipped off the road a quarter mile down below ! Can you try and pull me back on the road, so I can deliver it ? Re: [Elecraft] Text Decode Issues (Cured?)
With a lot of tiny adjustments and very careful attention to the setup, it seems that I have a fairly decent text decode now on my KX3. The key is very VERY sensitive to adjustment so if you get it where you like it, don't change anything! It still makes some mistakes, but I can live with that. The point is not perfect decode, but reasonable expectations of being close. To that end, I am pretty satisfied. I have also come to realize that there are an awful lot of operators out there who send high speed gibberish. No one seems to take the time to send correctly when they get over 25wpm. It's just WIZ BANG BOOM! Ok, I get it. I also purchased the KX3 book from Fred Cady KE7X which I am now going over page by page. Seems like a good investment as he clearly is very familiar with the KX3. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Text-Decode-Issues-tp7587553p7587757.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I’ve noticed that there have been discussions on the two items below on the reflector, but they are years old. Does this list’s collective brain trust have 2014 suggestions? 1. The SLA battery is about worn out, although it has been kept topped up using Don Wilhelm’s suggestion of the AA Engineering charger. I’d like to replace the battery with one that is newer and lighter - LiPO or LiPOFe. Has anyone done this, and can you suggest particular batteries, part numbers, and set up for charging. 2. [Elecraft] Going 2014 with my K2
Hello Philip, With advancement in battery technology, it is really a good idea to replace the internal SLA. The best will be a 4 cells LiPOFE which will give you an operation voltage of about 13.2v. This will make K2 delivering its full power. LiPoFe cells are also more stable. On the other hands, a 3 cells LiPo 11.1v is also a possible alternative. The trick is to make sure you get all those cells from reputable battery suppliers. To charge those cells, I would suggest you stick to the intelligent balance chargers which are easily avaliable from the RC shops. 73 Johnny VR2XMC 寄件人︰ PHILIP GRAITCER pgra...@me.com 收件人︰ elecraft@mailman.qth.net 傳送日期︰ 2014年04月24日 (週四) 9:30 AM 主題︰ [Elecraft] Going 2014 with my K2 I love my five year old K2, and although I have a K3, I’d like to keep using the K2 for the field and digital. [Elecraft] OT: NVIS with KX3
Hello elecrafters, It is off topic and you may wish to press 'del' button now. Local ham clubs together with some hams in the China Mainland are going to do some drilling in ARES within the Pearl River Delta area (with a radius of about 50km). NVIS could be one of the operation to trial run for ARES. My questions are: 1. Is the power output say 10w from KX3 good enough for such purpose under SSB? We don't want CW which requires training operators. Phone mode can be operated by anyone with minimal guidance (a simulation under emergency). 2. Not exactly related to this but ...fwiw as someone fairly new to this reflector ... I'm just as interested in what people *do* with their Elecraft equipment as well as how their experiences ..whether DX ..Contest ..EComm..VHF/UHF/EME etc. using Elecraft equipment compare with experiences using other equipment. Some of the threads here do go on too long ..or once in awhile go off on an extreme tangent ..but for the most part ...I think we are a little too quick to claim off topic YMMV 73 Steve KL7SB -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Johnny Siu Sent: Wednesday, April 23, 2014 8:03 PM To: Elecraft; k...@yahoogroups.com Subject: [Elecraft] OT: NVIS with KX3 Hello elecrafters, It is off topic and you may wish to press 'del' button now. Re: [Elecraft] What crystal filters for the K3 are linear phase delay (constant group delay) ?
And just for the record. If you are going to optimize for bandpass shape then you are going to have non constant group delay. If you add more crystals you can have both and the filters would be more expensive. It's a compromise and we demand this compromise. A phase linear filter looks bloody awful in terms of bandpass shape. No sharp sides. But these days the DSP can provide some of the attenuation so perhaps a compromise can be made. Which is why I like the 2.7 KHz 5 pole filter. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/What-crystal-filters-for-the-K3-are-linear-phase-delay-constant-group-delay-tp7587633p758.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] OT: NVIS with KX3
1) I can't answer the question about power, but it's easy enough to try it and see. 2) 40M should work for this application. Frequencies depend on local practice, QRM, etc. 3) You need a horizontal antenna for this mode, so a Buddipole would have to be configured that way. But I think -- since you would only be operating one band -- that a more efficient and simpler to use system would be an ordinary dipole. A good height for an NVIS dipole on 7100 kHz would be 3 to 5 m above ground. I suspect that a loaded antenna like a Buddipole would be more affected by ground losses than a simple dipole. All of the above is easy to test with two radios and antennas! On 4/23/2014 9:03 PM, Johnny Siu wrote: Hello elecrafters, It is off topic and you may wish to press 'del' button now. Some of the wider filters in that paper are pretty good. The narrowest filters are not so good. The flat part of the passband has constant group delay. The skirts are awful For narrow filters it starts going weird. A Buddipole for 80 or 40M will require lots of inductive loading, so it will be VERY inefficient. Also, with NVIS, ground conductivity matters -- you need good ground conductivity to get good NVIS. It's worth studying the sections of the ARRL Antenna Book on the topic of propagation, and how the state of ionization by the sun affects whether you have a chance at NVIS. When you're using QRP, you have at least one hand tied behind your back. Don't let a poor antenna choice tie the other one. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] What crystal filters for the K3 are linear phase delay (constant group delay) ?
In analog filter design, you get to choose between good phase performance and good amplitude performance. You can't have both. If you want a flat passband and steep skirts, you'll get wonky phase. The Chebyshev filter is a good example of controlling amplitude response. If you want good phase performance, you'll get a gentle rolloff from the center frequency and long, shallow skirts. Bessel filters are a good example of that. None of these are completely linear in phase response, but the Bessel filters are better. The usual approach is to choose a filter with steep skirts that is wider than you need, so you can use the middle of the passband where the phase response is not so bad. Then do additional filtering in DSP, where you can have good amplitude and phase performance at the cost of delay. Better filters, more delay. There is no free lunch, it's physics. My analog filter design textbook was by Van Valkenburg, though it is fairly math-heavy and dang! textbooks are expensive these days. wunder K6WRU BSEE Rice University 1981 On Apr 23, 2014, at 10:13 PM, Larry Lopez lawlop...@gmail.com wrote: Some of the wider filters in that paper are pretty good. On 4/23/2014 10:13 PM, Larry Lopez wrote: Some of the wider filters in that paper are pretty good. The narrowest filters are not so good. The flat part of the passband has constant group delay. The skirts are awful Nothing at all surprising. In general, phase distortion (group delay) goes along with variation in amplitude response, steeper skirts results in more phase distortion in the passband. That means it's greatest with steep filter skirts, AND extends within the passband from the filter skirts. DSP signal processing is a simulation of analog circuits -- when you do filtering in DSP, it's a simulation of an analog filter, and it's far easier to build a filter in DSP with low phase distortion than it is with physical components. In general, when phase shift is an issue, we want to use DSP for the narrow filtering and fairly wide analog filters (the crystal roofing filters) to protect the DSP from overload. And when phase shift is an issue, wider bandwidth is better. The current wisdom from those who get it is to use a 400 Hz roofer for most narrow digital modes (RTTY, JT65) and set DSP for about the same bandwidth. K1JT, the Nobel laureate who gave us the WSJT modes, says to run the RX broad and let his software do the filtering. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
