Re: [Elecraft] Cool your KX3 (fredem)
FWIW... I thought I'd mention this.. I bought my KX3 heat sink from Fred Meier VE7FM a while ago. It is a very well machined precision product and fits beautifully, everything lined up perfectly - and it took me less than 10 minutes to install. I chose the micro bead blasted finish to increase the effective radiating area. (at least that's what I figured - I'm probably wrong!) It weighs about 8oz and I measured/calculated that it had a total dissipating area of just over 42 sq ins. The transaction was very easy and the delivery was very fast. I posted the list with my before and after results of temperatures reached for key-down continuous output transmissions at various power levels for a 5 minute duration at each power level into a dummy load. I had no temp induced shutdowns during my tests with that heat sink fitted.. I've been using it for several months now with no problems. If you look in the pictures folder, under my callsign, you can see before and after images of it fitted to my KX3 I also posted the before and after indicated temps to the list (a while back!) I do know that Fred is willing and able to ship worldwide from Canada, in fact, to anywhere in the world that has PayPal or a bank draft. For my order I used PayPal. Usual Disclaimer: I have no financial or other interests in Fred's products other than being a very satisfied customer. 73 de Dave G.KK7SS Richland, WA. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Bob, I had #13 (Beta tester!) If L3 in your KX1 has only 6 turns, see “KX1 Builder’s Alert, Modifying Final Amplifier Choke L3”for instructions on how to rewind the inductor." >>From: cockpit...@aol.com >>I have a lead on a 5 year old KX1 and was wondering if they've changed >>much >>in 5 years. [Elecraft] KX-1 Ferrite question - background info for the request..
For those that might be ibnterested FWIW - Using a KX-1+KXAT1, I'm trying to find a way to adapt the (standard?) ~26ft wire with 16ft counterpoise to work on 3.55Mhz... Here's what I've been thinking... I was initially considering modding the internal KAT1 toroids. The trick there would be to get the three toroids to cover the whole KX-1 range.. the probable outcome would not being able to get below an SWRof 2:1 or 3:1 on many frequencies with the existing antennae . But I remember (when I was G3UTY) being mobile in London, UK on 160M with 10W. We used center-loaded 8ft whips. Very large inefficient coils but we still managed to work the european continent... So here's the situation, as I see it, looking at efficiensy and current/voltage distribution; and bearing in mind that, typically, most /P is done with 25- 40ft of wire. 1) End loading with L+C is probably out due to exremely high voltages and also that's the end needed to hang the wire in the trees/fishing rod/etc... it is still a possibilty. 2) Center loading with L only would be the next best. Middle range voltages and current but it would mean hanging a small weight in the middle of a length of (usually) very light wire. Might not be a practical solution.. 3) Bottom loading which, in this case, is at the KX1 BNC connector This gives the L minimum voltage with high current but also has the lowest radiation efficiency. Hanging an extra bit of weight on the BNC connector might not be such a good idea! So perhaps a short length of RG174 which connects to the L (or an LC) circuit would be the best idea but /P operators might not appreciate carring an extra bit of wire in their Go pack! 4) Adding a coil to the counterpoise... in effect making the KX-1 directly feeding an OCF needs more thought ;^-| Any opinions?? Thoughts? Suggestion?? Ooops, better careful answering the latter -- Dave G. If you watch the NASA videos, you will notice that the whiskers move, flex and break very easily under slight air movements, subsequently the chosen removal method was very simple . [Elecraft] Re: RX Parameters for Contestors
Here is how I see it from a non-contester, non-dx-er point of view... Sun-Spots are on the increase. Conditions are improving. Signals *will* get stronger and more of them. So my criteria basically are:- a) If the noise increases when I connect my antenna, then the receiver sensitivity is good enough for me. b) if my AGC is not 'pumped, by another signal 2-5 Khz away, then the selectivity is good enough for me. lastly, and MOST important... c) if the noise reduction circuitry can dramatically reduce the man-made and atmospheric noise to where I can here a weak signal without getting a headache, then I'm happy... Perhaps my views might change if I ever get involved in contesting or serious DX'ing... we]ll see 8^)) Thanks for the bandwidth... -- Dave G. [Elecraft] DSP for KX1 and K1
Lyle, My vote is for the KX-1 would be for a a denoiser only... [Elecraft] KX-1 AGC action --- question
I'm encountering a tremendous difference in audio ouput between an s3 signal and an S9+10 signal. It's enough to hurt my eardrums !! [Elecraft] Re:KX-1 and 15M
Hi Bruce, I was fortunate enough to be one of the KX-1 Beta testers. So I am well aware of the DDS clock limitations, and of the two LPF's in the KX-1 with "knee's". just allowing 20M operation. But my "nudge, nuidge, wink, wink" was directed - with my tongue firmly in my cheek- at the possibility (no matter how remote) of Elecraft, after the K3 hiatus has settled down, considering a companion to the KX-1. Perhaps a KX-2(?) with a similar form factor, power and options, covering 20,17, 15 and 10 meters or better still 17,15,10 and 6 Meters.. 8 bands with two rigs... one in each pocket, with most of our home-brew accessories capable of being used with both... WIth the upswing in the Sunspot cycle the next decase will be fantastic for QRP operation.. Anyway I can dream, can't I???
