[Elecraft] Spring Cleaning Update

2024-05-09 Thread Doug Hensley
Still Available :

1.  A new W2 to P3 ethernet Cat 5/6/? data-link cable, $24.95 + $4.50 shipping;

piece for reattaching a headband cushion. This is a nice sounding headset
which produces a clear sound image.  $15 plus $8.00 USPS shipping;

3. One 10 gauge pair and one 12 gauge pair of new 15 foot red/black Type MTW /
THHN 600V nylon insulated (gas & oil resistant) commercial stranded copper wire
pairs suitable for running a short in wall or in conduit electrical extension.
 $15 for both pairs plus $8 shipping;

4. One 18 foot length of "green" 8 AWG fine stranded & super flexible copper
wire suitable for use as a heavy ground in situations where the wire must be
movable or travel with what it is attached to (such as a power supply under
your bench). Approximately 1/4" diameter with a pack of heavy 8 ga crimp
terminals & one ground pipe clamp.  $29.95 plus $8 shipping;

2024-03-07 Thread Doug Hensley
Okay, I found an image of the apron of an early P3 & it is using a DB9 RS232

Does anyone know this can be adapted to the later CAT5/6 socket the newer K3s
uses?

I recently heard that early P3's (first gen ?) used a different P3-to-K3 cable

[Elecraft] P3 history

that? And is there a fix for connecting an eary P3 to a late K3s?

Re: [Elecraft] What minimum temperature should the K station be kept at during a hard freeze

2024-01-15 Thread Doug Hensley
Thanks Bill,

Much appreciate the information as well as the response.

I have a K3s pair, each with a P3 on one side of the station and
a K1 adjacent to it. Both, of course, with power supplies. My
K3s's are factory sn 10xxx units and will be here for the duration.

Fascinating story on the AF front. Thanks for sharing.

Stay warm,

Doug, You didn’t specify which “K” radio you were inquiring about. My K4D
manual page 45 says: 0 C to 50 C or 32 F to 122 F. The K3s manual specifics
0-50 C for frequency stability. The K2 manual does not mention operating
temperatures. The KX3 manual does not specify. I checked the non “K”, IC-7300
manual and operating range is stated as: -10 C to +60 C or +14 F to +140 F
just for a sanity check. To be safe, keeping the radio above freezing is a
good idea. I would think that condensation or moisture of any kind is the
enemy in the cold. Storing and operating are different things.

That said, I worked on a military radio that mounted in the 47 section of the
B-52D, F with no environmental controls. It was subjected to 50,000‘ altitude
and -50 C, F . The failure rate of that radio was much greater than the same
radio that was in the pressurized and air-conditioned in a forward section of
the aircraft. I might add that these radios were electrically tuned to a
frequency using DC motors and heterodyned crystals (the AN/ARC-34) and it was
almost always the tuning that failed. These radios were in tropical conditions
in Guam or Thailand when not flying. They used sub-miniature tubes about a
third the size of a miniature tube.

Usually the limiting factor for low temperature in modern equipment is the LCD.
They have a problem crystalizing much below freezing and thus are not usable in
very cold temperatures.

I hope thing don’t get too cold in your area - we are forecast to see 19F here
in SW LA on Tuesday morning. Yuck!

Re: [Elecraft] User's Dilemma

2023-12-14 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dear OMs,
The problem is that radio prices would almost certainly need to go up
to give the dealer a margin after his/her own expenses.

An independent service facility would be nice but is there adequate
business in this? Not so sure we in EI could easily use a UK service
facility. I prefer to ship to California than Italy. The cost of
shipping to Italy may not be so wildly different than the cost of
California freight. Have a friend who lost a SPE 2K FA in shipping to Rome
and received no compensation.

It is a problem for sure. I have always dealt directly with the
factory and have been fortunate.A conundrum for sure. Enjoy your
Elecraft. Be careful and pray.

Re: [Elecraft] Overseas distribution and service?

2023-10-22 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dave,
The radio is modular so quite possibly the entire radio would not
require return.I have found Elecraft support superlative. There are
also repair services available in the EU.Perhaps just as EI dealing
with UK our natural provider in the past is awkward; it is equally
difficult for G to work with the EU.

For many years there was no UK supplier of Elecraft but the K3 was
still a seller. Personally I prefer ordering direct from the factory.
It seems a less expensive route than having a middleman.

The products are dear though and I wonder how long it is before China
takes over. The QRP and SOTA market has a lot of low cost product.
Perhaps signal purity is down but so too is cost. There are challenges
in free trade.

Enjoy your radios.Pay me no heed.

Geert,
As a many time direct purchaser, I can say I never experienced any
horror story or great difficulty in direct orders to Elecraft shipping to

Re: [Elecraft] Buying a K4 in UK

2023-08-03 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dear OMs,
I previously replied to this post so will not repeat myself.I
needed to return a KPA 1500 to Watsonville, Ca. It was determined that
only the RF deck was required.I shipped FedEx by their premium shipping
method and had no difficulty. It went straight through as a repair. No
added charges in my case. The amp was out of warranty so of course
service was charged for. US and EU repair costs, I suspect are not far
out of line.

As an aside I included a Samsung Smart Tag similar to an Apple Airtag and
thus had additional reassurance. Not sure shipping to CA cost all that
much more than Italy. Had my amp back within about a month.

Elecraft can also dispatch sub-modules if there is a failure. On line or
telephone support was excellent earlier in sorting a friend's K3. Do not
be too worried about service.

I have two K-Pods which are used with my K4Ds and previously K3s.
I too on occasion have trouble with the switches. I have noted that
rebooting the K4D will often cure the problem. Also I wonder if having
the switch react to both momentary tap and sustained push beyond a second
or two helps. For me the radios would not be the same nor nearly as
ergonomically friendly without the KPods and both of mine go back to the
beginning of the KPod era. I too would be interested in hearing more
but I will keep my KPods.

I really like the KPOD...when it works.

I find the buttons occasionally non responsive resulting in nothing being
sent. After a few taps it eventually works again for a while.

Of course this mostly occurs when trying to send a call in a pileup or a
reply 599TU.

Is this a button thing that needs replacing or something in the K4 being
non responsive?

I think it's the KPOD itself since it also happened on my old K3S.

Re: [Elecraft] East Coast Service

2023-02-01 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dear OMs and YLs,
I live in EI but also have roots in New England.Just returned my
KPA1500 for service - probably the finals. TG I have two of this fine
amp.I sent it to CA rather than Italy as the real knowledge base is at
the mother ship.Using UPS it took three days to arrive. If living in
States again and having a choice it would probably still go to CA. If in
the same State then sure I would drive to the repair centre. Distances on
the east coast can be significant.

We are all different but for me the mothership is where I want my
Elecraft radios to go. That is the centre of knowledge and expertise for
the big E. My two cents and not worth anything these days.I see your
point as well.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 production software release (R32) now available

Wayne,
You and your crew at Elecraft are champions. Thank you.

Subject: [Elecraft] K4 production software release (R32) now available

Release 32 has been beta tested (R32.BETA2) and has now been moved to
production status.

See release notes below, or on our K4 software page, or view them in the
updater on the K4 itself. (For your convenience, the list below shows all
significant changes since production release 31.)

Software development is continuing in multiple areas, including remote
control.

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

 R32 (PRODUCTION) ==

December 13, 2022

- SSB/ESSB TRANSMIT AUDIO LOW-FREQUENCY RESPONSE IMPROVED: The nominal
SSB transmit audio low-frequency rolloff can now be moved down from about
200 Hz to 100 Hz. (Amplitude at 100 Hz then increases by nearly 20 dB.)
This selection is made using the new "TX Audio LF Cutoff, SSB" menu entry.
IMPORTANT NOTES: (1) The 100 Hz selection is *always* applied in ESSB
mode. (2) In addition to using this new SSB setting, you can control the
transmit passband in all modes using TX EQ. (3) If you use USB or LSB for
audio DATA modes such as PACTOR that require fast turnaround times, you
should not use the 100 Hz SSB setting, because it slows turnaround by
about 20 milliseconds. (The high-performance digital filter required to
obtain a lower passband has additional "taps," resulting in greater
delay.)

- KPA1500 / KPA500 LOSS OF BUTTON PRESSES: In previous releases, some amp
front panel button presses could be missed by the K4 due to the concurrent
handling of other band-change activity.

- RADIO LOCKUP DURING VFO MOVEMENT AT ~5600 KHZ: One operator discovered
a radio lockup when moving the VFO in the vicinity of 5600-5620 kHz. This
was due to incorrect lookup of ATU LC segment data, which has now been
corrected.

- TERMINATION OF DVR MESSAGES no longer causes occasional loss of mic
audio.

- REPEATER OFFSETS are now correctly applied to VFO B when in SPLIT.

- IMPROVED EEPROM DATA VERIFICATION.

FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS & MACROS

- The "TQX;" command now bypasses other command processing delays to
provide a more real-time response during "TX;" / "RX;" command
transitions.

- DUPLICATE "TX;" COMMAND while in transmit mode no longer exits transmit.

- ADDED "EE0;" command to reset all radio state and menu parameters to
defaults, with the exception of factory calibration data.

- ADDED "TQX" GET COMMAND (extension to "TQ" TX status query): If the GET
query is "TQ;", then the K4 is considered to still be in transmit mode
during the S-meter holdoff time (300 ms), even though receive audio can be
heard. If the GET query is "TQX;", then the S-meter holdoff time is not
considered to be part of the transmit state. This allows an application to
find out more quickly when actual RF transmit has ended, which may result
in a more responsive user interface (when playing DVR messages, for
example).

- ADDED "AG$+nnn" (AF gain increment/decrement).

- ADDED "VC" command to properly handle configuration of per-mode coarse
tuning steps. "VT" command also improved to correctly handle A/B VFO
swaps, etc.

- IMPROVED "#HWFC" command to allow modification of waterfall color mode
for both panadapters on the external monitor.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Tech Support and Service

2022-12-08 Thread Doug Plunkett
Fairly new to the hobby and I only own one rig - the KX3. I have found their
tech support, and the company in general, to be second to none in terms of help
and support! Based on the comments from my local club members on issues with
other manufacturers, I doubt I’ll ever change brands!

I thought I would offer this to the list before going to another

I have a new Begali "Pearl" key for sale. Will send picture

[Elecraft] KX3 Internal Batteries

2022-07-26 Thread Doug Plunkett
I operate my KX3 primarily as a base station as it’s the only rig I own. Love
the rig and do occasionally operate portable without an external power supply.
I recently heard that it’s recommended to remove the internal batteries with
the rig is used primarily as a base station and connected to an external power
supply - to avoid the rare instance of a battery leaking onto the circuitry. Is
this Elecraft’s recommendation? And if removed, I assume I lose the internal
clock?

Thanks,
Doug Plunkett

Everything has been sold now except the 250 hZ and 2.8 kHZ filters.

They'll only be available for a short period so speak up if you want one.

These are as new Elecraft K3s 8 pole filters made by Inrad (as I understand it).

The 250 hZ is razor sharp and the 2.8 is the wide SSB filter, great for QSO's.

[Elecraft] For Sale: Elecraft SP-3 Speaker (for K3s)

2022-01-17 Thread Doug Hensley
I have two Elecraft SP-3 speakers for sale which have not been used;
they were purchased for a special contest station which, thanks to the
pandemic, never materialized. Probably a good thing as our design ideas
for that have improved.

The speakers match the K3s to the letter. Price is $250 each plus FedEx
ground shipping. NO PAYPAL and no p.o boxes. Physical address and
daytime contact number are required by FedEx. As I understand it, these
speakers are no longer made so if you had wished you had one, here's an
opportunity.

I'm not always at my computer so if you respond, be patient and I will get
back to you.

[Elecraft] SOLD - DSP Filter Kit is SOLD

Subject: For Sale: Cumbria Designs Mini-DSP Filter Kit

I have a DSP Audio filter kit that I don't have time to use and thought
I would offer it here for anyone with a K1 or K2 that might want to try
adding their own DSP Audio Filter.

Cumbria Designs was a British concern famous for its "X-Lock" VFO
stabilizer used on many K1's and older gear with a VFO that was a free
running oscillator. Works miracles.

This Mini DSP Audio Filter kit was one of their last kits (they closed
doors and moved on to other things) and offered personal tailoring
of the audio product. I can send a data sheet to anyone interested.
The kit I have has never been gone through, never touched except
to store for a better day. Looking at it I would think anyone who
successfully built their own K1 or K2 could also handle this. Having
said that, I also think this kit is not for beginners. You should have
some good experiences under your belt.

I'm asking $125 plus $5 shipping.

QSL if interested. I'm shutting down now for the night so will not be
able to reply to anyone until tomorrow AM.

Thank you,

[Elecraft] KPA 1500 Status message %

Dear OMs and YL,

Can someone please tell me what the % sign with Status message of say
67% indicates. I think it is the efficiency of the amplifier at a given
point. The same Status screen displays: forward power, Voltage, Current
and temperature as well as the % figure. I looked through the manual but
can not find the answer to my question. A quick calculation seems to
indicate it indicates power out to power input. Thank you.

Re: [Elecraft] HOA Crap

2021-06-29 Thread Doug Person
I own a condo in Loveland, CO just south of Fort Collins. The HOA is a
pain in the butt. My main residence is on the other side of the Rockies
in rural northwestern Colorado where I have acreage, many wire antennas
and a tower with a nice HexBeam on it. When I'm in Loveland I operate my
rural station remotely. It works well and is a lot of fun.  I operate
10, 6, 2 and 70cm with antennas in the attic of my condo. But getting on
HF is always going to be remote.

To me hamming is communicating and solving technical challenges and then
being proud of your accomplishments. Remote hamming is just another
version and I'm glad I'm able to do it. In the future I may have to give
up my rural residence, When I do, a neighbor and good friend of mine is
ready and willing to let me setup a solar-powered  remote station on his
property. Without that option I would probably be off HF completely.

Remote operating is becoming more and more important for people who
otherwise have no option for HF.  That's probably why the K4 has such
excellent facilities for remote operations. Getting on the air and
making contacts, talking to old friends all over the world, adding a new
country or even just a state - THAT is ham radio to me.

[With apologies to N4ZR. I'll try to tie my comment to germain topics.]

I generally disagree with NK7I's comments because I think ham radio is
a huge tent, and the point is having fun.

However, this comment tickled the thought that setting up remote
receivers could be something hams do regularly. I can imagine a remote
receiver at one son's house in Colorado, and another at the other
son's house in California.

These receivers might be useful for activities like the Elecraft net,
where frequently the QRO stations, which are the backbone of the net,
can't hear the QRP stations who try to check in. It would be a fun
project in station building.

[Elecraft] Giving Up

2021-06-07 Thread Doug Person
Sadly, I've decided to give up waiting for the K4. I'm probably far down
the list anyway. Their are numerous reason for this decision. First,
there is the cost. With a tuner the price is $4600 making it one of the
most expensive transceivers on the market. I fully realize that the K4
is feature rich and extremely well designed. I would never take anything
away from Elecraft's engineering ability. The K3 set a new standard of
performance that made the other manufacturers substantially up their
game - which they did. But is the K4 going to do the same thing the K3
did? To me, it doesn't look like it. Innovative in some, perhaps many
ways - yes. A new trend setter? I'm not so sure. When the K3 came out it
was very competitively priced. I'm not sure I would describe the K4 with
the same words. It is unquestionably an expensive radio. At this point
the price/performance just isn't there for me. I sold my very complete
K3 station several years ago in anticipation of the K4. But now the
waiting has left me thinking about how much I'm willing to invest and
whether or not another brand whose transceivers are as much as $1500
less and whose performance seems quite impressive will meet my needs.
After literally several years of contemplation I conclude that, for me,
the K4 is not worth the price. $3600 (with the tuner since every other
significant radio includes one) would seem competitive and I would jump
on it at this price. But as it is? Can't see doing it. I apologize if

[Elecraft] K3 & KPA1500 ERR KP 1

2021-05-29 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dear OMs and YLs,
Can someone please advise me as to what ERR KP 1 indicates.Using my
K3 and KPA 1500 on Six meters FT8 I get this message only while transmitting on
the K3 screen with no indication of a problem on the KPA 1500 . If I place
the KPA 1500 into standby mode the message does not appear.I do not use
ALC.There seems to be no reference to this error message in either manual.
The amplifier seems to be working just fine.

If I lower the K3 drive (8W) drive to the amplifier so that the K3 KPA internal
amp is not engaged but the KPA 1500 is in operate mode, the problem does not
occur. Should I increase the power to 12 W from the K3 with KPA 1500 in
operate mode the error code does appear.Again the KPA 1500 seems to operate
perfectly. The K3 at 95W with KPA 1500 in STBY does not result in the KPA 1
message.

What does ERR KPA 1 indicate on the K3 screen?

 Thank you for your help.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3s Power Selection

In the Config Menu:

PWR SET
If set to PER-BAND, the power level is saved on each band.
This is especially useful with external amplifiers.

Mine is set to PER-BAND.

If a KPA500 is connected to the K3S via the ACC cable (as mine is), two sets of
per-band power settings are saved: one for “barefoot” operation, one for use
with the amp.

Where and how do I save and then access these two savings? Are the somehow
automatically selected?

In my case I want to save 100 watts for "barefoot" operation and 25 watts for
amplifier operation. I've tried using Quick Memories 1-9 for bands — which
works fine — and Quick Memories M1 and M2 for the two power settings for each
band — which does NOT work.

What's the right way to do this?

[Elecraft] Help on KX2 Encoder

2021-05-16 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi all, The encoder on the KX2 is turning very roughly. I suspect it got hit
and is broken inside. I understand it is a standard part. I am hesitant to take
the radio apart without some kind of roadmap. Any help on disassembly to get to
the encoder?
 Thanks, Doug

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #7997 is alive

2021-05-11 Thread Doug Person
Building a K2 takes quite an investment of time. But, once you've
completed it and made your first QSO where you proudly say "Rig here is
an Elecraft K2 that I just finished building...", you have a sense of
ownership unlike anything you just took out of a box and plugged in.
It's a marvelous little transceiver. It's truly fantastic for cw but
shines in SSB as well. I can't recommend the experience enough. I've
learned to have a very ZEN mind when I built them. Total focus on
exactly one thing - a resistor, capacitor... what ever it is... do it
perfectly and don't think of anything else. And then admire its
perfection when its done. When I finish a board, I inspect it with a
quality magnifying glass. I look at every solder joint, every part
placement like it's a work of art - which, in many ways, it is. Whether
it becomes your main radio or sits on a shelf awaiting an occasional use
- it is always a source of personal pride. To me, building something
like the K2, is a very important part of the Ham Radio Experience.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: High school drafting class, ~1975

2021-04-27 Thread Doug Person
Fascinating walk through the past. I took mechanical drawing in my
freshman year. Our high school was 4 years and no junior high.
Mechanical drawing was by far my favorite class. I learned a lot about
dimensions, angles, areas - basic geometry. It made math make sense.

My first novice station in 1962 was a Halicrafters S38E receiver which
was terrible and a one-tube transmitter built from salvaged TV parts
that was in the 1962 ARRL Handbook - which I still have complete with
burn marks when I dropped the soldering iron on it.   My father gave me
a Lafayette HE-10 receiver for Christmas that year. It was much better.

Ham radio and my familiarity with electronic circuits led me to a class
in Autocoder, an assembly language for an IBM computer from the 60's. I
don't recall what model. But - bits and bytes made perfect sense because
to me they were just a series of switches and the logic of ANDs, ORs,
XORs, etc were easy for me to visualize. I just thought of current
making its way through a matrix of on or off switches. I proceeded to
take ever computer class offered in that community college.

Although there have been many working titles for someone who writes
code, and I've had about a dozen, I've always been proud to call myself
a computer programmer. Nothing more and nothing less.

Took 'Mechanical Drawing' in Jr. high, loved it.  Also had drawing classes
(course also included slide rule) first semester of college.

I was a co-op student in EE and worked for NASA 1962-1967.  I was placed in a
software group, kinda out of my degree, but I liked it and spent my career as a
Software Engineer (in the day we were called 'programmers.')
I was greatly blessed to be working at NASA at the beginning of operations in
Houston.  The first computer I worked on was an IBM 7094, 32K of 36 bit words,
2 microsecond cycle time, mag tape OS, no disk.  We were located in what had
been the PBS TV studio on the University of Houston campus, reworked to be a
computer center - the space center (MSC) was under construction.  Languages
were FORTRAN II, assembly (FAP) and eventually FORTRAN IV and assembly.  Punch
cards of course.
Slide rules indeed!  However, we also had a Friden mechanical calculator which
could do square roots!!

Ham rig at the time was a homebrew 6AU6-6146 from a QST article and
Hallicrafters S-19R with Heathkit Q multiplier, dipole on 40m cw.
As you, Steve, indicated I could not afford the HP 'digital slide rule' -- bought
the TI version about a year later for a cost 1/2 of the HP, used it for years.
Still have my K DECI-LON (and a B-29  'Load Adjuster' slide rule from WWII).
I remember all the items you mentioned.
Finally (at last) I often tell younger folks (I am 77) that they have orders of
magnitude more power in their cell phones than we had in our gigantic computers
-- BUT -- we put men on the moon with 'em.

Let's also remember that Elecraft is an incredibly small company
compared to K, Y and I. And they're putting out a leading edge world
class product that is as good or better than anything else on the
market. It's quite a feat in today's business world. I've been waiting
several years now. I get by with what I have (K2/100) and I continue to
have something to look forward to. I'm just glad Big "E" has survived
through everything. It's been a really tough year for many smaller
businesses. It is an amazing success story that Elecraft has survived
and prospered for over 21 years despite the gigantic size difference
compared to its competition. (I guess I just sold my K3/P3 prematurely.)

[Elecraft] An FT8 Radio- just dreaming

2021-02-21 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
I have been wondering for some time- How will FT8 change ham radio equipment?
Right off I imagine a radio and computer in one box maybe with the display.
(FT8 should vastly simplify the first interface with the radio, with menus
reaching deeper into its control. Most of today's designs are not well enough
integrated and I think are hampered by preconceptions. Nor do they take
advantage of graphic user interfaces that are common in say cell phones.  I
think it could be one box with voice and touch control with keyboard and mouse
optional. How about an internal projector so that the screen can be projected
onto another surface making monitors optional? If it is going to be worth it,
It has to be not different but do things differently.

could brag about. My surplus TCS rig would not go onto 15M so real DX was
pretty much out for the first two months of my Novice ticket, then the
General Class exam was passed and what a difference. They were good days
but the chirp is well left in the past.

Yes we need to return to the true path of CW, FT8 is a drug and
makes many of us lazy, mea maxima culpa. Thank you Wayne.

Subject: [Elecraft] Signals wild...signals caged

My son is an avid birdwatcher. As his understudy, I've learned the names of
the birds that hang out in our yard and gather at local wetlands.

On a recent walk we saw one of our favorites, an American kestrel, a small
raptor that terrorizes lizards and mice in the foothills on both sides of
the San Francisco Bay. The bird's coloration is a surprising mix of blue,
brown, orange, yellow, and white, adorned with an array of black dots.

Finding a kestrel in the wild is like stumbling upon a rare gem, lying on
the ground.

The bird reminded me that when I was a kid, I often hunted for gems of a
different sort: DX. I was a novice, and in the early 1970s, novices were
limited to working DX Of The First Kind. CW.

Like brightly colored birds, each CW signal arriving from a distant land was
unique.

Several factors were involved. In those days most ops used bugs or straight
keys, so each operator had an identifiable fist. Rigs were not as stable as
they are now, yielding timbres with a motley mix of buzz, drift, and chirp.
Add fading and noise to the mix, and you had no shortage of audible
intrigue.

In fact -- trust me on this one -- RST reports haven't always ended with a
dependable "9." I once gave out an RST of 332. I'll never forget that poor
soul's chaotic whoop, best described as a singular blend of yodel and kazoo.

Over time I became something of a CW pathologist, keenly aware of each
station's affliction, including my own. These variations were useful. You
could tell who you'd already worked. If you were a regular on the novice
bands, you'd even get to know fellow travelers by their frequencies, since
many, like me, were "rock-bound" -- slaves to a handful of crystals. VFOs
were starting to make an appearance in novice gear...but see "chirp," above.

Now, in 2021, the chirp is gone.

CW signals still have many distinguishing traits, though. These include
speed, keying weight, the operator's affectations and favored prosigns, and
direction-specific propagation anomalies.

Here's where we stretch the central metaphor to just about max.

If randomly occurring CW signals on our bands are creatures of the wild,
then...are FT8 stations the occupants of an urban zoo? Don't get me wrong:
It's a pleasant place, with free tram rides, open 24 hours a day. The
diversity of species is unprecedented.

But imagine, on a given day, that you've sampled the zoo's exotic offerings,
memorized the brochure, bought the t-shirt, and partaken of the sumptuous
snack bar. What next?

Take a walk on the wild side.

Yank the cord and jump off the tram at an unmarked stop. Hop the fence. Work
your way down the unpaved trail from the upper mesa to the open savannah,
then sit on the ten-foot wall and dangle your feet over the edge.

Welcome to the ecosystem of beings who are free to roam. They may be
camouflaged, blending into the background. And if you listen carefully,
you'll hear a hundred variations on their timeless song...CQ.

Wayne

There was a case a while back where a ham had his license pulled because he
was convicted of telecom fraud.
IIRC, the FCC said it was evidence that he was unwilling to follow the
rules.
And I think it only came visible because he protested, or filed to get it
reinstated.
I suspect Phil can recall more details.

That's because up to now it was unthinkable that licensed hams would use
amateur radio in the commission of crimes. The law and the enforcement
apparatus always was there, though, and was used without any publicity.
We're going through violent times now and it's sad that such a notice
had to be issued. Violators can't say that they weren't warned.

If by 'most infectious' you mean highest number of cases per 100K residents
in the last 7 days, that distinction goes to Arizona.
If you mean most deaths per 100K in the last 7 days, CA isn't even close to
Kansas in the top spot.
But we Californians know what you meant, and thanks for the sympathy.

[Elecraft] K4 Kit and CE

2021-01-05 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dear OMs and YLs,

Someone on this forum stated that if sold in kit form that the K4 did
not need CE approval for sale in the EU. I am not sure this is true but
hope so and of course then hope that the kit is coming out sooner rather
than later. I have a deposit down for the second group of shipments and
this would mean that I might actually see the K4 sooner.

Once the K4D with superhet frontend is available, the new front end
will be ordered plus a second K4D.I already have homes for my two K3
radios.Probably will also want another KPA 1500.

So any word on CE approval process, whether it is required for kits
sold into the EU and the availability of the kit version of the K4 is
anxiously awaited.

As and aside it would be nice if the next version of the KPA 1500
could be run efficiently at 400W.Contest power is generally 1500 Watts
in EI but normal output power is limited to 400W. An Acom 2000A also in
the shack may be the amp to use when operating under normal conditions.
Having said this, the KPA is a beautiful amp and it is for that reason a
second one is considered.

Yes perhaps this is greed but at 76 there are not that many more
sunspot cycles in store for me. I started like most of you with a
surplus RGB II (forerunner of the HQ120) bought from summer job and baby
siting. The first rig was an old borrowed TCS surplus radio before
building a two 6146 rig from a QST article. What a great hobby radio is.

[Elecraft] KX3 - SSB Reception

2020-12-15 Thread Doug Plunkett
I’m not confident I have a problem as my KX3 operates fine but it seems
something has changed. I’m using headphones. I receive other ham’s
transmissions, both SSB and CW, fine through the headphones. On CW I hear MY
transmissions through the headset, but on SSB I do not hear MY transmissions
through the headset. Adjustment of the “MON” knob control does adjust the
volume on CW through the headset (nothing on SSB since I don’t hear it via the
headset). Is this normal behavior - not receiving my SSB transmissions through
the headset - or is there a setting/control I have not able to locate?

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 - what am I doing wrong?

2020-11-23 Thread Doug Daniels
Have you only tried the AX1 or have you tried the BNC binding post with two
wires connected to it? I've tested my KX2 by painter's taping the antenna
wire to my ceiling and running the counterpoise along the floor. If that
works, you know it's the AX1 and not the rig. CQ WW CW is this weekend,
there will be people wall to wall on the bands, good time for testing.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Now: shipboard callsigns, was: W vs K broadcast station callsigns,

2020-10-08 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-717-1197
It turns out there are TWO ways you can get a 4 letter call for a
shipboard station-
You can have a licensed radiotelegraph station, OR
you can have small boats with permanent radio installations.
In 2014/5 I got OLIVER HAZARD PERRY the callsign KOHZ by citing that rule when
we did our original application, and installed radios in our small boats.

And as lagniappe, when BOUNTY was foundering in late October of 2012,
the master was licensed as KD4OHZ, and we used the Winlink station on board
with his callsign to communicate with the USCG by email.
I've always wondered if the former callsign was related to the latter. since
both boats were in the same category as sailing school vessels, and someone
at the FCC picked up on that. But probably not.

[Elecraft] K4 Panadaptor Settings

2020-10-03 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Did I miss it? Is there a gain setting for the db/division vertical scale or is
it fixed?  The P3 is variable.   Doug K6JEY

[Elecraft] FS New Elecraft W2 w/ 2 kW Sample Head

2020-09-29 Thread Doug Hensley
Re-posting this because I incorrectly described this the first time.

For Sale is my Elecraft W2 Digital RF Power Meter with one sampling head rated
for up to 2 Kw.

The W2 can display zero to 2, 20, 200 or 2000 watts of outgoing RF power. The
package includes
the W2, the 2 kW Sampling head and the six foot CAT 5 or 6 (Elecraft P3/W2
Straight Through Patch
cable) connecting cable. I did not use this so do not have and cannot supply
any PL-259 cables
for your K3 or K3S or whatever rig you are using. Take a minute to read E's
website description:

https://elecraft.com/collections/test-equipment/products/w2

The W2 today will cost $379 through their E store. I am selling for $329 so
you save $50.

If purchasing, please advise address, zip & contact number. Shipped via USPS
for $10.

Payment by simple check or money order preferred but you can add 4% for PAYPAL.
Note: This email is NOT my PAYPAL account ID. I will send that to purchaser
if required.

Cheers,

Doug W5JV

Re: [Elecraft] Free shipping

2020-07-31 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dear OMs and YLs,
May I say that I agree with Richard.Free shipping while nice is not
my concern but it would be reassuring for Elecraft to keep the many of us with
large deposits better notified as to progress and delays. As I am in the EU,
my shipment date will be longer by months than those of you in W land. We must
have CE approval for shipment; this is essentially a EU wide check for safety
purposes not too dissimilar to UL approval but perhaps more wide ranging. How
much longer CE approval will take we have never been told that I can remember.
My money stays with Elecraft.I am an Elecraft supporter and owner of many
Elecraft products. When this K4 becomes available I may well order a second
K4 plus second KPA 1500. It would sure be nice though to get a monthly update.

It would also be interesting to have a more detailed specification sheet
though I suppose this is being left to other labs to produce. Elecraft must
though have these numbers. Maybe the good people in California want to make a
big bang when the K4 does ship by blowing competition away.

I am not about to ask for a refund of my deposit but I do pray that
Elecraft is not another casualty of the Covid 19 virus. There is enough
suffering and much more to come in commercial life. There are good people in
the mother ship.

My two cents. We all wish the best for Elecraft. It has been horrible for
them and all of us living with this cloud. Free shipping or whatever I don't
really care at this point. What I find fault with is the lack of
communication. How hard would it be to have a regular update on the progress
of the K4 box and other products? Even if there is no new news just say so. I
am sorry but the communication has been far less than desirable. When I look at
the Elecraft "stories" the last update on the K4 was May of 2020. The last
update on in the newsletter was July 2020 with virtually nothing on the K4.
Please...as you can see from the emails...just tell us what is going on. 99.9%
of us are very understanding.

Hi, I have a KX3 that I like very much. I put in the filter modification. Does
anyone have any specifications on how much the filter helps the receiver- like
before and after?   Thanks, Doug K6JEY
