Re: [Elecraft] Chinese wages

2020-05-03 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
 Hello Patrick,
In the past, Chinese wages were really low so that the total costs of wages +
hidden costs were still commercial viable.  Now, the story is totally different
and you have to be worried about quality control and intellectual rights issues.
I am in Hong Kong and have seen the changes but it is far too sensitive to
discuss openly here.  If you are aware of the news of Hong Kong, our young
generation has been fighting hard in the past 9 months.

Re: [Elecraft] Clarification on Repair Process

2020-03-20 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
 Hello Lee,
From Hong Kong's experience, please wear masks whenever practicable.
The idea of 'only the sick should wear masks' is totally wrong because there
are many invisible victims of Wuhan virus.  For some victims, they have no
symptoms, they don't even know they were infected.  However, they are spreading
the virus like a zombie.

Hong Kong learnt our painful experience in 2003 and we find our ways to survive.
Be safe and healthy.

[Elecraft] off topic - VR2's experience in COVID-19

2020-03-11 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Dear OM,
It is off-topic, you can press 'delete' now.
VR2 is densely populated with over 7 million people.  We are also close to
Mainland China.  Our government is so stupid that she did not greatly reduce
the number of Mainland Chinese from entering Hong Kong at the beginning.
Having said that, VR2 is still able to maintain a relatively low number of
COVID-19 victims.  Here are what we have done:
1.  Over 95% of our population wearing surgical mask whenever practicable;2.
We try to avoid social gathering as much as we can;3. We wash our hands
frequently before touch our noses and eyes.
I worked in US and UK in the past and know many of you just think that only the
sick man will wear mask.  VR2 people do not think so. We learnt from painful
experience from 2003 SARS and now did the above 3 items.
We did not rely on our government but we do what we learnt from the past.
Hope this piece of experience helpful to you and thank you for the band-width
here.

Time flies, I have been absent from the air for some time.  Recently, I tried

I just wonder whether my favorite support advisers Gary and Howard are still

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR,
hams in Hong Kong are permitted to use VR20 as call sign prefix from 1 Jul 2017

Therefore, in the coming IARU contest, you may hear some VR20 stations.

[Elecraft] KX2 Heatsink

2017-05-14 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
The original request for aftermarket heat link was from earlier production of
KX3.  My KX3 was an early production.  I plainly put up heat sink issue in this
mailing list that the early KX3 only has thin piece of metal as heat sink which
simply did not meet the specifications published by Elecraft.
Eventually, Elecraft did respond and now newer production comes with KX3HSMDKT

I believe Elecraft learnt this lesson and the heat sink in KX2 will meet the
published operating specifications.  For pro-long full duty cycle digital
operation at 10W, KX2 is simply not designed for that usage hence the stock
heat sink.
Heat sink problem also exists in the Elecraft transverters, while the max
output is 20W, it cannot sustain 10W FM causal operation (i.e. too hot)

 主題︰ [Elecraft] KX2 Heatsink

Hi Kev,

The issue is related to the fact that Elecraft, as do virtually all
amateur radio manufacturers rate power output with 50% duty cycle SSB/CW
modes only.  As is stated in the KX3 specifications and here copied from
the KX2 manual:

/"80-17 meters, 10 W PEP max (+/- 1 dB); 12 and 10 meters, 8 W PEP max
(+/- 1 dB).//
//Recommended transmit duty cycle: 50%, all modes. (If power amplifier
temperature or//
//current drain is too high, power will automatically be reduced.)//
//NOTE: When using over 5 W in SSB, DATA-A and AFSK-A modes, the//
//recommended supply voltage is 12 V or higher to minimize transmit
intermodulation//
//products. Higher power with lower voltages should be used only when
necessary."/

I believe many or most of the requests we have had to make an
aftermarket heatsink have come from hams using these rigs in digital
modes such as JT and desire full-power operation, which Elecraft does
not explicitly endorse, but which is possible with additional cooling.
Elecraft designs and specifies operation of their rigs very
conservatively compared to many other manufacturers, and the KX2 and KX3
specifications are spot on.
Also as is stated in the specification, the KX2 internal battery, at
10-11V depending on state of charge is considered adequate for 5W or
less, and we have supplied many Kx33 14V supplies to KX2 owners who want
to use the rig at 10W power when AC power is available.

I conclude many of these KX2 rigs are being used in digital modes from
fixed location AC power, not from batteries.  I can't blame the hams who
do this, the KX2 is a fantastically full-featured rig for fixed
operation, I have used it at home to check into local 10M SSB nets
driving a KPA500 and no one was the wiser compared to my K3.

Cheers,
Howie - WA4PSC

[Elecraft] Elecraft Support

2017-01-08 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Don and all,
Yes, I have been contacting Gary for more than a decade for various elecraft

He and other support staff from Elecraft do give a personal touch and I can

One of my main reason to stay with Elecraft is their support services. Product

Jim and all,

Yes, I remember those "good old days" when the only Elecraft support
person was Gary (I was one of the K2 Field Testers).  Unfortunately as
the Elecraft product line grew, the number of support persons has grown
too - it now numbers 4 - David, Craig, Howard and Gary, and the Monday
morning support email load is large.
Problems that the support staff cannot handle are still passed along to
the engineers, but that may be in the background while the support
people handle the major communications back to the customer.

Yes, I am close to the Elecraft team (particularly the support and sales
folks), and do most of the repairs on the K2 and other "thru-hole" kits
in the Elecraft line.  So I am quite familiar with that part of their
operation as well as their problems.  Personal phone numbers are no
longer given out (protections for the employees except in extreme
cases), but you will still receive personalized customer support service
via email or they will often phone customers with problems.

I do serve as support for those "Thru-hole" products when Gary is not
available, and I can say for myself that (from me) you will receive
extended personal support when required - yes even help with a lifted
solder pad.
I am in North Carolina, and am in a different time zone than Elecraft,
but that makes little difference,  we still communicate with each other
and the customers when the need arises.

73,
Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] operating HF / KX3 in a Tesla Model S

2016-10-19 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Hello Lyle, Jim and Ignacy and others,
Thanks for all your valuable advice.
Hong Kong is small and good for Electric Vehicles.   The population of EV has
increased from 100 to now around 7000 in 5 years time.  Regrettably,
installation of chargers at condominium car parks is still a uphill battle.
In fact, in terms of number of EV per km of roads, Hong Kong is the highest
among the Asia Pacific.

Hello Johnny!

You may need some filtering on the 12V power connector in the center
console of the Model S.  The 12V battery is also quite small in the
vehicle.  I'd be inclined to package an LiFePO4 battery pack and a
charger for it and place it in the center console area, powering the
mobile rig from the LiFePO4 pack.  That will give you surge capacity for
higher power should you desire it, probably make any necessary 12V noise
filtering easier and limit the stress on the 12V system in the Model S.

For antenna mounting, you might consider adding a trail hitch adapter,
and then mount the mobile antenna to that, using its bonding to prevent
possible damage or modification to your vehicle.  In the U.S., such a
hitch is made by Torklift (www.torkliftcentral.com then click through
Ecohitch and Tesla Model S) and seels for under $400 plus shipping and
installation. It is invisible when not in use.  I know a couple of Model
S owners here in Tucson that have these hitches and are satisfied with
their quality and durability.

73,

Lyle KK7P

[Elecraft] operating HF / KX3 in a Tesla Model S

2016-10-19 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Thanks Bill.  The fuse in the cigarette lighter is 15A.  I think only a 50 W
amplifier is workable.

You will be drawing less than 4 amps, so the lighter socket
should work fine. If you decide to add the 100W amp, then
running dedicated wires will probably be the correct choice. I
would want to know more about the 12V supply in the Tesla before
running them. Perhaps the car manual has some advice.

Grounding techniques should be the same as for steel. Do be
aware of the corrosion issues when different metals are in
contact. Aluminium corrodes easily, so having a sacrificial
piece of metal to protect the car body may be a good idea.
Perhaps a piece of aluminum bonded to the car body with copper
or brass bonded to it. (My electro-chemistry is a bit rusty.)
Then that piece of aluminum will corrode and can be easily
replaced. Also think about the materials for any screws/bolts
used for the bonding.

[Elecraft] operating HF / KX3 in a Tesla Model S

2016-10-18 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Hello elecrafter,
I am thinking operating my KX3 in my Tesla and have some questions:
1.  Is it ok to direct drain DC supply from the cigarette lighter socket since
there is no ignition system in the Tesla?
2.  The body of Tesla is aluminium alloy (if I am correct.  How can I ground a
mobile whip to the car body?
Any advice is appreciated.

[Elecraft] Microphone

2016-10-13 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
In fact, I find modern transceivers including K3 are very accommodating to
microphones. Professional broadcasting microphone is simply over killed for ham
purposes.  Sometimes, just a bit experiment, even with computer headset, you
will get good results.
I sold all my Heil gears such as PR781.  I am now using CM500 and a few low
cost mics.  I am not saying Heil is no good but too overkill for ham radio.

Two very good reasons -- panel real estate and the lack of NEED for pro
mics.  optimum SSB bandwidth for communications is 500 Hz - 3 kHz. All
that low end does is suck TX power with no intelligibility gain.

Virtually any ubalanced electret capsule or dynamic mic works very well
with ham gear and sounds great. There is no need for pro mics with ham
gear, and they cost a lot more than commonly used ham mics that sound
quite good. All you need to run the electret is bias, which is applied
to the mic output, about 8V through about 6K. Neither value is critical.
This is exactly what we do for the lav capsules that are used with
wireless mics.

I was in the same position 12 years ago when I got back on the air, and
made a simple adapter to use an RE16 because I didn't own a ham mic. I
continued to use it (on an AKG boom stand) until W6XU found and promoted
the CM500.

[Elecraft] K3 DSP Old and New

2016-09-22 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Hello Doug,
If you are not going for a K3S, the update to newer D version is very
worthwhile.  It gives great improvement in the audio (though I still consider
the audio worse than my new generation Icom radio).
However, Elecraft mentioned in the past that the DSP board currently used in
K3S would be offered to K3 user for upgrade.
I would wonder whether you would like to wait for the new K3S DSP board instead.

I had recently stopped monitoring the reflector as I only have a K1 and
two K2's. Everything is K3 and subject lines rarely reflect that anymore
so it's hard to filter them. But I had a K2 problem and rejoined. Got a
response with solution within an hour! And discovered that I miss the OT
discussions from a unique bunch of experts. Most of the OTs are
interesting and more relevant to a non-KX/K3 owner. So I'm back to
monitoring only OTs. hi.

The new products don't fill any need in my hamming that isn't satisfied
by the K2, but the ongoing development of the state of ham art at
Elecraft is extraordinary to see.

[Elecraft] K3 audio quality

2016-09-16 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
I must say that I respectfully disagree '99% of the time the fault lies between
the chair and the radio'.
My comments are restricted to voice mode.  Alan's comments are related to
comparison with Icom DSP radios.  K3's audio in voice mode (no matter how you
set / adjust the RX EQ) is far inferior than Icom.
The reason behind is the artifacts from K3 DSP.  I am of the opinion that the
audio (not internal speaker) from KX3 is more comparable to Icom.
While I am not young and over 50, I can still hear up to 12KHz.  Perhaps, this
is the reason why I am very sensitive to DSP artifacts.

This has been a complaint for the last nine years and 99% of the time
the fault lies between the chair and the radio. Did anybody do a proper
audio setup on the rig when it arrived or did it just get tossed on the
desk and turned on? You need to go to W3FPR's website and take a look at
the audio settings Don worked up on the original K3.

The K3(s) is a highly configurable radio.

To be fair stick an outboard speaker on the K3 and tweek the audio
settings. Then again some people don't want to mess with radio settings.
The "appliance operators" expect perfect this and perfect that and don't
want to lift a finger to get it.

[Elecraft] KDSP2

Hello Phil,
Very well respected and I did read similar favorable comments about KDSP2 like
yours in the past. The best part of this mail listing is that we are used to
agree to 'disagree'.
My K2 was gone some time and replaced by K3 and KX3.  Now, I am keeping a close
eye on the Icom new IC7610 SDR which I saw in Tokyo ham fair 2016.

Au Contraire in my case, Johnny.  I've found the
KDSP2 to be very effective and still use my K2/100
in my secondary operating location as my QRO rig.

The issue with the KDSP2 is getting the settings
right. That was tricky and probably took me a year
or two of experimentation. But now it works very
well for me and I find the NR very effective.

[Elecraft] KDSP2

2016-08-28 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
I will not regret the discontinuation of KDSP2.  In my case, I do not feel any
usefulness of the KDSP2,I sold it and replaced with a KAF2 at a much lower
cost.  While there are a number of settings in KDSP2 which you can manipulate,
regrettably none of the settings gave me a present result.  The artifacts from
the DeNoiser is huge and much worse than K3.
IMHO, among the elecraft radios, the best Noise Reduction NR is in KX3 (I did
not try the KX2).  KDSP2 is in the audio stage and did not improve any
selectivity like the DSP in K3
KAF2 in the used market is really cheap.  Adding the KAF2 will not cost much
but at least give you some listening comfort.  With some careful choices of R
and C in KAF2 (please refer to the manual), you will find yourself a sweet spot
even for SSB.

[Elecraft] Battery Mod for K2 battery pack (was : Battery Pack Mod for the KX3)

2016-07-05 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Similarly, with the advance in battery technology, the lead acid battery in K2
should be now advanced to a LiFePo pack as well.  There are ample space inside
the K2 for installing a new charging circuit board.  This will greatly reduce
the weight of a battery powered K2 and give much longer operating period.

I am seeing a repetitive RFI source every 34kHz from somewhere less than
20MHz thru 30MHz plus...

See attached image.  The amplitude alternates high/low every other
appearance.  The overall amplitude is higher or lower depending on the
location within the spectrum  Almost a sine wave function with a
VERY long period.

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what is causing it?  I disco'd every
switch-mode power supply in the shack and adjacent rooms (couldn't do
the whole house as the XYL was home) EXCEPT my Powerwerx SS-30DV PS
running the K3s/P3.

Don't have a battery to run the radio on right now...

[Elecraft] KPA500 LCD-Display mysterious failure

2016-06-13 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Hello Oli,
I experienced the same and contacted Elecraft support.  They suggested re-heat
the solder of U6 and U11 in the front panel to eliminate cold solder joins.
However, my eye sight and hands are not good enough to do so.  I simply leave
as it is because the LCD characters usually come back after 5-10 mins power on.
May I know the serial no of KPA500?  I suspect there could be a small patch of
KPA500 with front panel minor defects.

 主題︰ [Elecraft] KPA500 LCD-Display mysterious failure

Dear Elecraft-list,

today I powered my KPA500 #1584 up and got no display on the KPA500. The
backlight is working properly but the LCD shows nothing.

The Amp is working OK, it communicates with the KPA500 Remote utility, it
communicates with the K3 and does 500 W Output as before. Only the LCD shows
nothing.
Even the keys for Menu and the bandkeys are working fine.

After some time, after I removed it from power complete several times, opening
the top Cover, controlling remote, flashing new firmware ect. the LCD is
mysteriously working again.
Any tips to this? What to check for? Thank you.

[Elecraft] Inserting TMP cables - was: Problems with K144XV Transverter for K3S - Can't Hear Anything

2016-06-07 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
In the installation of TMP of K144XV, I opened up the top cover of K144XV to do
the installation so that I could ensure what I did was fine.  After that, I
closed the top cover.

主題︰ [Elecraft] Inserting TMP cables - was: Problems with K144XV Transverter
for K3S - Can't Hear Anything

I agree that TMP cables can be difficult to insert, but here is how I
proceed:
First make sure there are no strands hanging out of the center conductor.
Then look at the very tip of the center conductor.  If it appears that
the crimping process has produced two "ears" that extend outside the
diameter of the center pin, you can use long nose pliers to reduce the
width of those ears just a bit.  In other words, you are 'rounding" the
tip slightly - do not take this to extremes and crush the tip, a gently
'rounding' is all that it takes.

Then insert the male TMP into the female - look at the shell - if there
is a gap between the male and female shells, the center conductor of the
male tip is not yet started into the center conductor of the female
jack.  Do not push yet, but twist and 'wiggle' the connector until the
center conductor is started on its proper path.
Once the shell of the female closes the gap to the male connector shell,
the center conductor has found its home.  Then is the time to push it
home - a bit of a twist will help.

If you push hard on the connector before the center conductor has 'found
its home', you will end up pushing the jack off its mounting lugs.
Pressure toward the jack will not help until the center pin has begun
seating.

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] P3 pricing

2016-05-25 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Hello George,
I am on your side.  It has been Elecraft's promise that their kit is as good as
the assembled one.  In addition, they will back up all kit builders to ensure
their success and up to factory specifications.  I built a number of K2, KX1
and K3 on behalf of some hams (visual impaired) in the past.

Maybe Elecraft can weigh-in about the "Burn-In Time" for the boards used in
the kits.

I have all kits and suspect that my Elecrafts are actually as good as
factory except they were assembled by a rank amateur (Elecraftwise).
I do know that I had no qualms about modify the filters or motherboard for
the recent low freq operation; because I knew how to disassemble my K3.
If I ever have to trouble shoot any of the K-Line or KX3, I know where to
look once I get the schematic out!
When I first went from Kenmore to Elecraft, the availability of the kit made
it a know brainer to go to Elecraft.
The customer service and firmware & hardware updates have been the icing on
my Elecraft cake.

I disagree that factory built value is nil. When I bought my K3 I was told
factory builds went through a 24 hour burn in, and then checked for specs.
That to me is value.

If a used item is 75% or more of new item pricing, the warranty alone
decides for me to buy new.

[Elecraft] KX3 User Group is now the KX User Group

2016-05-25 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
I once gave my user comments about an after market heat sink for my own KX3 in
a KX3 yahoo group. However, I was banned from that KX3 yahoo group with an
allegation of advertising products. Ironically, I have no business relationship
with that particular heat sink manufacturer but merely mentioned my user
comments.
Hence, I quit that KX3 yahoo group without hesitation.  It was my personal
experience in the past and I am not going to persuade you to join the KX3 yahoo
group below or not.
Hopefully, the KX3 yahoo group experienced by me in the past is NOT the one
mentioned below.

主題︰ [Elecraft] KX3 User Group is now the KX User Group

Hi all,

In response to requests from both Elecraft and new KX2 owners we have
morphed the Yahoo KX3 User Group into the Elecraft KX User Group.  This
is in keeping with Elecraft's division between their portable KX product
line and their desktop K line.

We welcome the owners of any KX1, KX2, KX3, KXPA100, PX3, or accessory
for any of these rigs to join with other like-minded Elecraft owners.
We are over 5000 members strong and growing fast!

Chances are if you have a question about one of these rigs, there are
many others who have answered that question in our group.  The Yahoo KX
User Group is supported by both Elecraft personnel and others allied
with Elecraft, so updates and beta firmwares are announced there.

To join, go to: https://groups.yahoo.com/KX3 Click on the "+ Join Group"
button.

[Elecraft] KX2 Satellite Derivative? (Was: Re: The KX2)

2016-05-25 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Instead of developing a new radio for SAT.  Can there be a device that can link
two elecraft radios for up / downlink of SAT?
In the past, CT16 can link Icom IC275 and IC475 to work as a pair.
I think this route will save a lot of R&D for a new radio.

The FT-736R and other dual-band multi-mode duplex radios were
produced for the early Heo linear transponder sats - true.  And the
market for expensive big box radios faded with only single channel FM
Leo sats.  Understandable that mfrs would go where the market is
largest.  Kenwood and Icom still market such a radio; Yaesu
stopped.  But they didn't drop out of the multi-mode VHF radio
market...just a duplex model.

And my proposal was not for such?  Clearly I stated it should be a
direct frequency SDR, but married with a transmitter which the
funcubes aren't.  I mentioned a panadapter and IQ interface to
computer to support modern sw.

>In short, until we have high orbit transponders on VHF UHF like

I bought an old FT-736R for more reasons than for satellite.  But
that should not be confused with my proposal for a KX3-like duplex
radio.  Certainly one would not compare the KX3 with a
FT-840.  Totally a different product.  Totally new tech.

>  Any plans for a geostationary satellite would not use VHF UHF, but

Yes, that is true.  That will involve a new mw radio designed for the
digital modes to be used.  Amsat is cognizant of the fact that hams
will not be easily do this as was done for AO-40 s-band using surplus
stuff.  The VHF radio + transverter will not suffice.  The concept
under consideration includes SDR tech.

>Things have moved on, a single duplex box isn't what is needed.  A

>Point on the screen on the signal you see and with Doppler corrected

Is that not what I talked about?  The KX3 is a SDR though limited to
HF/6m + 2m transverter.  Perhaps a wide-range SDR would be better but
you still need a comparable transmitter which can operate in
duplex.  At present this still is a bunch of boxes wired together
requiring a lot of engineering by the individual vs a complete package.

And such equipment should have more than a single application like
satellite but instead offer a wide range of VHF+ operational activity
- so one could buy just one box for doing all.  But you are correct
that the concept should incorporate newest SDR technology with ample
use of computing power.  I believe I mentioned all those requirements.

Maybe one can build a wide-range SDR based radio without need for
transverters.  A SDR that tunes 50-4000 MHz but with comparable
transmit capability.  I'm not sure that one can do direct freq SDR
that far with existing tech. One thing to guard against is thinking
SDR means only a receiver (which current funcube are).

It may be that we are too soon to accomplish that?  The first guy to
do it will have the market.

[Elecraft] KX2 Vs. KX3 Bottom Line

2016-05-24 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Hi Terry,
I feel it is very clever for elecraft to produce the KX2 so that they can sweep

Hopefully, they earn more to fund the development of a K4 or KX4?

 主題︰ [Elecraft] KX2 Vs. KX3 Bottom Line

I have been reading all of the posts discussing the differences between the
KX2 and KX3.  All sorts of things have been discussed referring to the
buying decision, what the KX2 does or doesn't do, etc.  I am a KX3 owner and
love that radio.  As a KX3 owner, here is how I see the buying decision to
add a KX2 radio.  When the KX3 came out, we all marveled at its size and
capabilities and couldn't wait to use it for SOTA and other hikes and biking
portable.  Now the KX2 is out much smaller with somewhat fewer capabilities
but still a great rig.

For me, the decision is a very simple one.  Would I be in situations hiking
where a radio smaller than the KX3 would be a benefit?  Considering what
else I might carry in a backpack to get to some operating location, how much
difference will a radio not quite half the size and 11 oz. lighter make the
overall load I am carrying?  If I am and carrying 20 lbs. in a pack, the
difference in weight is not much, and 20 lbs. isn't all that heavy.  The
heaver the pack, the less percentage wt. difference it makes.  For all
other applications, I would use the KX3.  It's so easy to get caught up in
the small size and great capabilities of the KX3.  The "new toy" syndrome
bites all of us, me included, however,  it really boils down to 11oz. and
not quite half the size for the capability tradeoffs between the two.

Of course if a person does not own a KX3 already, the buying decision is
different, but still involves size vs. capability tradeoffs and does the
smaller size really buy a person that much benefit when toting it up a
trail.  If cost is a consideration for a first time buyer, then the KX2 is
an amazing radio for its  price and portability!

Terry, N7TB

[Elecraft] KX2 Satellite Derivative? (Was: Re: The KX2)

2016-05-24 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Hello Elecrafters,
I, of course, like the idea of SAT derivative.  However, as mentioned in my
previous post, both KX2 and K3S are product life cycle extension to fully
utilize the spent R&D.  These products are only evolution and not revolution.
I have much doubt on the market size of so called satellite radio from
Elecraft.  With a look of the XV transverters especially the XV432, they are
not cheap but there are issues such as heat issues under full specification
output / power and frequency instabilities etc.
Hence, I am looking for something revolutionary and not evolutionary from
Elecraft.  Both K3 and KX3 were revolutionary at the time of announcement.
When I saw KX3 in 2011 Dayton, I was surprised and thought KX3 would kill all
other brands QRP ham radios.

I have changed my thinking on this.

My suggestion would be a kick butt single band 6m rig in a K3s box. All
the bells and whistles the K3s has now with the addition of cross band
duplex and 100W any mode no time limit. The other bands would be
installed as transverters in a computer style main board in the rig.
Each transverter would be capable of 50W minimum output, have it's own
SO239/N connector. The current K3EXTREF would be standard for 10MHz
reference, as well as a 0.5 ppm TCXO along with RX I/Q out ala KX3. A
V/UHF version of the P3 would have to be offered for the computer averse
among us.

Call it the K3s SAT+.

[Elecraft] K3 and KX3 questions for Wayne

2016-05-22 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Hello Gentleman,
I met both Wayne and Eric in the past, they are thick skin and like questions
right in front of their faces.  Some questions for them to address will give
them more desire to do better.  In return, we are benefited.
Actually, I don't mind having a KXPA100 delivering 100W under 12V power supply.
Just leave Wayne free hands to Wayne to answer and I trust he is in a better
position to do so.

Further down in the same online spec page it states "Compact unit ideal
for both desktop and mobile use". Note *mobile* use where the electrical
system supplies more than 13.8V with the engine running.
I find no mention of the KXPA100 being developed as a "portable" amp. I
have done searches of all Elecraft docs concerning the KXPA100 and find
NO mention of the word *portable* anywhere. Nor do I find any mention of
some nefarious board swap early in the products life.

Maybe the OP assumed because it has a carry strap that it is a portable
amp. Well...My TS520 has a carry strap and a DC-DC converter. No way
that can be classified as portable, it weighs 37lbs.

To be fair I have run it at field day but we had a 10KW diesel powered
generator on a trailer. Power was NOT and issue.

[Elecraft] New KX2?

2016-05-19 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Hello Walter,
Eric is a smart business man and Wayne is an elite engineer.
Both KX2 and K3S are product life cycle extension to fully utilize the existing
R&D.  These products are only evolution and not revolution.
I trust Elecraft will use the cash generated from the above products to produce
a revolutionary product at at later stage.
I keep track of Elecraft business case and use it as examples in my part time
lecturing in business school.

There is some sort of myth about the KX3 not being rugged. It was designed for
trail use. With around 10,000 sold, I haven’t heard any reports of problems
with ruggedness.

My KX3 has fallen hard enough to bend the BNC connector and it works fine.

I would expect the KX2 to be slightly more rugged because the boards are
smaller. That’s about it.

Of course, the SideKX panels provide extra protection for the knobs. That’s
handy.

[Elecraft] K3 vs K3S

2016-05-15 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Yes, the new KSYN3A synthesizer board is also good for SSB.  Perhaps, it should
be the most valuable upgrade to K3.  If you don't have the funds for K3S, just
do this upgrade, then over say 99% of the time you can't distinguish between a

Andy,

I don't have a YouTube video but when I put the new synth boards in my three
K3 (not K3S) rigs I found that I was able to handle close by signals better.
I'm mostly a CW contest guy so I can't say what SSB is like but a CW contest
seems to be less crowded now.  I know that is purely subjective and I have
no numbers of my own to support that but the published numbers and graphs
I've seen from others match what I am hearing.  I'm also happy that the new
synth boards help make my transmit signal cleaner as well.  I had a friend
record my signal when I was next to a "dirty" CW signal in a recent contest
and the difference is striking.  Yes, $250 USD is very expensive but I felt
it was well worth the cost.  After the CW keying issue improvement, I feel
like this synth upgrade is the most important improvement for me.

Has anyone compare rx  K3 vs  K3 with a new synth ( K3S)  by the A / B
switch metode ?
As heard issued abt 250 usd ( KSYN3A) , what is the difference?
Where can I find a movie with such comparisons, cant find on youtube.

[Elecraft] Need Advice - K3+

2016-05-02 Thread Johnny Siu via Elecraft
Hello Ed,
I have the feeling that K3S is transition model before any evolution product
from Elecraft.  Or it is a way to extend the current K3 product life cycle - a
classic business school case.
Hence, I tend to not heavily invest for a new K3S.  I did the KSYN3A upgrade
which is crucial to the enhancement of performance.  The installation is easy.

Ditto we still don't use them.
Our users have a choice of laptop or iPad/Surface other than a desktop thin
client on our VM Ware network.
90% choose the Win7 laptop. They're more expensive, slower, and break more
often than the thin client but not as often as the iPads. The Surface's are new
so no experience base with them yet. Our hardware group absolutely hate touch
screens. I'm a Network Engineer...I have no use for them either.

My brother does IT for a school district that equipped all of their middle
school kids with cutting edge iPads. 700 of them. My brother had to get good at
replacing the very expensive coated touch screens that the evil empire said
mere mortals couldn't replace. He got no help from Apple other than expensive
parts. That experiment lasted three years and they switched to Chrome books.

I guarantee as sure as I'm sitting here *that touch screen will fail within a
year...if not sooner*, and you've got no chance to fix it yourself. I can order
parts from Elecraft for all my rigs and fix them.
No sweat.

I'm curious why is direct sampling SDR's like the 7300 are supposed to be the
second coming why Icom stuck with the traditional superhet architecture on it's
"flagship" 7851? Maybe they realize the technology is at least 5 years away
from being competitive. Everybody is ignoring W4TV's 800lb Gorilla, ADC
overload.

Hi Bruce and others,

I am sure that David talked about an Isotron antennas like this:
https://www.isotronantennas.com/

I intensively tested/used this antenna in 90's on 40m (product from Sigi,
DK9FN) and I have to say it is a nightmare in overall. From my own
experiences the performance of this toy was highly dependent to the
grounding availability, bandwidth was very small and tunning was influenced
by ground only but also by closed objects a lot.
Also the weather changes made bad impact for SWR like snow, rain etc.
Finally in 90's this toy was quite new and like any fashionable piece it was
really overpriced.

David,

As you can see the price these days is not so high but I do not believe that
something changed in its performances. If you would like to spend time with
playing around it (instead of enjoying the on-air operation) then you can
build it ownself as there is nothing magic on it. In any case do not waste
your money with buying it.

Hope it helps,

I haven't used the band but I would expect it would have characteristics
similar to the 80m and 40m band. Those bands are generally short range
during local daylight hours and can be around the world after sunset.

[Elecraft] OT: 60m band - usual communication range

2016-03-02 Thread Johnny Siu
Dear Elecrafters,
Local telecommunication authority is considering 60m operation for the hams in
VR2. For output power of 15W PEP, using a dipole for NVIS, what would be the
likely usual communication range 7/24 round the clock?  100km radius?
Any advice will be appreciated and thanks for the band width here.

If one is not a backpacker or wants 100W output - perhaps for mobile
work - the "traditional knob" interface, built in tuner, support for
the AH-3/AH-4 tuners at the antenna, 100W, etc. make the IC-7300 quite
interesting.  IIRC, the 7300 will do PSK31/RTTY with an internal
decoder and attached keyboard.  Icom's claimed RMDDR and phase noise
specifications will, if accurate, put the 7300 in the top echelon of
Sherwood's test results.  The 7300 has what appears to be relatively
"tight" preselectors which should minimize the "composite signal level"
ADC overload (much more than the Flex-6300 with no preselectors) and
those with limited antennas (e.g. mobile, compromise wires, etc.) are
even less likely to see the strong signal composite overload than
someone with big antennas high in the air.

My disappointment is that after claiming the 7300 would be an "entry
level" rig, the price is well above that of Icom's other entry level
rigs (the IC-718 or IC-7100).  At the announced price, the 7300 should
have included a RX ANT Out/RX ANT In "loop," support for a second
antenna, and a video output to feed a larger display.

At its size and power level the 7300 is not the "backpacker's special"
nor was it intended to be.  To make that comparison is patently unfair.

[Elecraft] Low power KX1

2016-01-17 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Richard,
Can you get full power output without the installation of the KXAT1? If yes,
they can concentrate your trouble shoot on the KXAT1 only.  Below is an extract
from my review in eham.

"The tiny LPF1 pcb of KXB3080 is to be situated in the tight space formed
between the C46-C49& C54 area of KX1 and R3-R4 & C10 area of KXAT1. Therefore,
Page 3 of KXAT1 manual, R3, R4& C10 should be soldered on the component side
and cut flush on the other side".

See whether there are component leads from the KXAT1 touch the KX1 components.

Thank you Don and Ray,

The information proved valuable.  Just pushing around on the toroids made a
change so I knew I had a bad connection somewhere.  With minor surgery I was
able to reheat the joints, and without the ATU board installed I have 40 to
48 VPP across the bands.  I also found that my dummy load was highly
inductive, going over 5 to 1 @ 14Mhz. (using a rigexpert AA-30) I made a new
one that came out at 51ohms resistive.

I think I have something attenuating the signal in the ATU board, as after
it, in both cal and tune modes I have quite a drop in signal.

Results        No tuner      tuner in cal      tuner in tune
3                51v              25                20
7                48v              30                27
10                46v              45                45
14                40v              27                19

In the test modes, I can hear each relay click. And in cal mode they look
like they bypass by shorting the inductors, so I am lost.  My electronic
skill is at "I wish I had a lot more"  Any and all help is appriciated.

Thank you in advance.

Richard,

Take a careful look at the Low Pass Filter board for the KXB3080 option.
Count the turns.  Each time the wire passes through the toroid core is one
turn.  Make certain you have the correct number of turns.
That LPF is the downfall of many builders.  In addition, count the turns on
T1 - the ame thing applies.
Also on the same toroids, be certain the leads were well stripped and
tinned.  Look at the solder side.  If you can see a ring around the lead,
that lead was not adequately stripped and tinned.  You should be able to see
a small bit of tinned lead on the component side of the board.
The LPF board should be *exactly* like that shown in the KXB3080 option
manual illustrations.  There is no room for exceptions.  Be certain the
green lead of L2 is oriented away from red lead #4.

You will need an external QRP wattmeter to properly calibrate the wattmeter
in the KXAT1, but if you have a good 50 ohm dummy load, you can use your
'scope to measure the RF voltage across it.  Use a 10X probe on the 'scope
and measure the peak to peak voltage.  If the dummy load is sealed, use a T
adapter to gain access to the center conductor.
The power is the square of the peak to peak voltage divided by 400.
Derivation of that formula is "left to the student".

Don W3FPR

I am very new to the world of CW.  Several months ago I built a KX1.  Once I
was able to receive with it, I built the 30-80 band set, and once it was
installed and working, I built the ATU.  With the ATU was the first time I
was able to measure power.  I am only getting .4W out of internal, and 1W
with a 13 volt power supply.  So I did the power modification changing the
resistors, and now I get .6 internal and 2W with 13V.

I could sure use some advice.  I do not have a bridge or watt meter.  I do
have a good scope  Can I measure the signal voltage across 50 ohms?

Thank you in advance.

If you are going to take the new KIO3B, and existing KIO3 board becomes
redundant,  I would like to take KIO3 Audio I/O module E850236.  It is just a
small piece of PCB and can be shipped easily in a padded envelope by airmail.
Please reply off-the-list with your price.

I guess the good news is that because so many of you folks think you’ll pass,
I’ll get mine sooner ;-)

I consider the fact that it provides a single-cable multi-function interface
between computer and radio, eliminating other miscellaneous and potentially
problematic goop in between, to be a good thing.  And stuff costs what it
costs. So even though I’m mostly a luddite who doesn’t generally treat a radio
as simply one more in a long chain of computer peripherals, I’ll most likely
have an order placed as soon as it shows up :-)

[Elecraft] OT: VHF radio in Tesla Model S

2015-10-06 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Gentleman,
Due to time zone, I come into discussion a bit late.  My Model S 70D should
come in about two weeks.
I do intent to put my KX3 mobile.  Since Model S is like a big computer with
wheels, I am worried about whether TX from KX3 (or later with KXPA100)will
cause RFI to the car.  Also antenna installation is another area to be thought
about.
Any ideas?

I have 2M and 1.2GHz radios in my Model S. They work fine with no
detectable RFI in either direction. I have a no-holes installation, which
is sub-optimal but I couldn't bear the thought of drilling into this
expensive but totally awesome vehicle.

[Elecraft] K3 RX in real world

2015-09-15 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Bill,
Real world experience could be difference for different operator and I don't
think someone is selling you away from the K-Line.
Radio is a science so that we can still begin with some numbers.  Among the top
notch radios, choice eventually becomes a user preference.
I once had the luxury to own all the real big Icoms and K3.  I now downsize my
station for other priority (getting funds to support the purchase of my Tesla
Model S).  I sold the big Icoms at good price and now just keep the K3 for
occasional contest operation.
I am not the one who always clap my hands towards elecraft but I will keep
Wayne and Eric busy in improving their products.  In the past, I shout loudly
about the artifacts and poor audio of K3. Now in the K3S, they get better audio
section for the radio.
One thing, I do appreciate that elecraft gives us the chance to upgrade our old
K3 (though not cheap).  The same philosophy is also found in Tesla.  The owners
have the chance to update their cars.
Enjoy your K-line and so will I.

Real World - that is all that really counts. All the testing and arguing
that has been appearing of late is great, if you are a numbers cruncher
and chart maker. But, to my thinking - the technical performance
differences between the top rigs can only be discerned in a "copper" room.

Real world experience with QRM, QRN, good or poor antennas, band
conditions are all the great equalizers. Reported real world experience
- comparing one rig (A to B) - is of far greater value to me than a list
of numbers.

Lots of explanations why one rig is preferred over another: handles
QRM/QRN better, has more pleasing audio, better/worse ergonomics, more
??? for the money, too many menus, great audio reports, great
keyer/break-in, eye candy, etc.

Of course, all that said - it would be a very hard sell to get me away
from my K3-Line. But, it would be interesting reading never-the-less.

The K3 with the KSYN3A is in a closely-packed cluster of radios which score
highest in the NPR test. Its exact ranking depends on which test frequency is
being compared. The differences are very slight, mostly within a couple of dB.

In practice, I regard an NPR value of 80 dB or higher as excellent.

For Jim K9YC:

Hi Jim,

Many thanks for the post on my presentations at the club meeting on Saturday
September 5.

To quote:

"There's an important caveat to his work. The NPR measurements require

very sophisticated band-stop filters in his instrumentation setup, and

based on the filters he has been able to source, that limits the

frequency range where he can do his measurements. An example is in the

footnote for the Flex-6700, which has no preselector for the range where

he had to do his measurements, which may have caused that radio to

measure worse than it would on the ham bands."

The instrumentation I use for NPR testing is re-purposed telecom test
equipment, as described in my Web article and also in my article in QEX for
March/April 2015. I rely on the surplus market for the test sets, and also
for the filter pairs (bandstop and bandpass). The bandstop filters typically
have 95 dB stopband attenuation and ~ 3 kHz stopband width.

A number of these filters are on (or near) amateur bands, e.g. 1940, 3886,
5340, 7600 and 11700 kHz. The first filter pair I acquired was on 5340 kHz,
so all the test data in my web article are on this frequency (which is in
the 60m band). The Flex-6700 does not have a preselector for this band, so
the noise loading will hit the front end and the ADC harder. This will
degrade the NPR reading by a few dB, but it will show how the receiver
behaves if heavily loaded on a band for which no preselector is fitted.

As I picked up additional filters, the number of frequencies on which I run

[Elecraft] Elecraft SP3 External Speaker details

2015-09-15 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Gene,
I do not want to publicize any Japanese dealer in this mail listing because I
am not a radio dealer or doing any radio dealing business.
The official full listed price of Icom SP23 is JPY12,800 (+VAT)

As a foreigner, we have no need to pay any VAT in Japan.  Furthermore, street
retail price is at a handsome discount on the official full listed price.
If you want me to give your more details about ham shops in Akihabara, Tokyo,
please feel free to contact me off-the-list.

Johnny,

Are you sure that's not a knock off at that price? With the yen devalued,
hovering around 120:1(USD), I would think it would be more expensive in Japan
than what it sells for in the US. I've been to Akihabara many times, and I
would tend to question its authenticity. I'll be back there this October, and
will check it out.

I have to admit that I, too, find $179 for a passive speaker in a metal
cabinet shockingly expensive.  I was expecting $99.  The price just gets
a shrug and an "Oh well.." from me.  Not a chance I would spend that
kind of money on a speaker just because it matches the K-Line.

[Elecraft] K3 to IC-7800 Comparison?

2015-09-14 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Adam,
From reading of your NPR chart, could I understand that apart from IC7851, the
K3 (with new KSYN3A installed) is the second best in terms of NPR test?

As I picked up additional filters, the number of frequencies on which I run
the test has steadily increased. Links to multi-frequency NPR data for
various radios (including the K3 with KSYN3A) are on my website:

http://www.ab4oj.com/test/main.html#NPR

Doug,

The KAT100 depends on internal signals from the K2 for proper
operation.  That means that it is a K2 specific tuner and cannot be used
with other transceivers.  For QRP users, the Elecraft T1 20 watt tuner
can be used with a variety of transceivers.

Yes, Michael, it is a good idea but this does not fit Elecraft's marketing

Wouldn’t it be nice if current K3  owners who already have the “older”
options (KIO3, KSYN, KXV3, KBPF3, etc.)  could get these
options (newer improved versions) at  a discounted price?  If you add
these up they are not cheap!
I myself would like the KIO3B,  KSYN3A, KXV3A, KBPF3A (I think the current
one can be modified), and have  already spent a lot for the older versions
(If I would have known I would have  waited on some)!

[Elecraft] Elecraft K2 7615

2015-09-06 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Aaron,
Let me be the naughty boy and speak the otherwise.
I once built a KDSP2 and eventually sold it in return for a KAF2.  I am mostly
a phone operator and found the artifact from KDSP2 was terrible.  Especially in
the NR noise reduction, no matter how I adjusted the settings, I was unable to
find a sweet spot.
I eventually got a KAF2 at the second hand market (say USD45).  It was simple
but effective in both CW and SSB. It was well worth the money.
My complaint about DSP artifacts also applied to K3.  I am looking forward to
the improved audio hardware in K3S.
My good hearing up to 12Khz sometimes does give me some trouble in DSP
artifacts.

I just got my K2 serial #5308 back from Don, W3FPR.
I bought it used and had Don to put additional options in it as I have bad
eyesight. It works great. I am very pleased with it.
He did a fantastic job and will work with you to get it right. He will even
build and install the SSB option for you. His prices are very reasonable.
Don is here on the reflector and has a website.
Send him an e-mail and see what you can work out with him.
You've got too much money tied up in the radio to just throw it in the
trash.

if I can't get Elecraft to look at it, then I'm just going to dump it in the
trash and sign my thousand bucks that I have invested in it as a loss and

[Elecraft] Is there a good reason to buy a K3S instead of a used K3 ?

2015-07-28 Thread Johnny Siu
If I did not have a K3, I would go for the K3S right the way.  I feel the K3S
holds better value in case I need to sell it in future.  Buying an used K3 and
then putting in the upgrades seem not much a saving in money terms.
However, I have already had my K3 and will just the do the necessary upgrades
to suit my operation needs.

I agree completely with what Phil says, both Phils
:-)

If I were buying today, I'd buy the K3S vs. a used
K3. I don't get my current K3 on the air enough
today to motivate me to sell my fine K3 (with the
new synth board) and buy the K3S.  So I will stand
pat.

[Elecraft] Front panel phone socket - K3

2015-06-28 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Don and others,
Thanks for your reply as well as others replied to me off-the-list.
Since there will be a new DSP board later this year, perhaps,I would simply
wait for the new one to replace the entire board.

Johnny,

I suspect some oxidation has formed on the contact areas inside the
phone jack which are intended to connect/disconnect the speaker.
So yes, I would believe that changing the front panel phone jack will
fix it.

[Elecraft] Front panel phone socket - K3

2015-06-28 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Group,
I have an earlier version of K3 though I keep updating its hardware + firmware
to the latest standard.
Now it develops some problem with the front panel phone socket.  Even after I
pull out my headphone jacket, no sound is coming out from the internal
loudspeaker.  On the other hand, if I config the menu SPKR+PH to YES, the sound
comes out from the internal loudspeaker again.
Is this indicating a defective front panel phone socket?  Or, is there any
other areas I should look into?
Looking forward to your advice.

[Elecraft] [K3] ideas for re-purposing our old K3 synthesizers

2015-06-24 Thread Johnny Siu
Well, USD25 for the old synthesizers is good enough for me and I will be happy
to sell it.
However, I cannot think of any interesting project for it.

主題︰ [Elecraft] [K3] ideas for re-purposing our old K3 synthesizers

I printed out the schematic of the original K3 synthesizer module.  The
diagram says 'rev. A4' and is dated 8 Jan 2010.  Hope that's close to the
as-built!  (probably is)

This gizmo appears to have an output range from 8.7 to 46 MHz.  I don't
know how much sauce it can develop but I have to imagine +10 dBm or so into
50 ohms, I bet it's flat across that range, and it looks like the thing
would be whistle-clean.

To get that, it needs a tight 49.38 MHz reference oscillator (I found a
0.5PPM TCXO for ~$30 from mainland China), and several common DC supply
voltages.

It also needs a small microcontroller or other way of providing the correct
serial peripheral interface command lines and interaction.  That processor
would also control the output frequency, perhaps with an encoder, or
whatever human interface might make sense.

But first, I am trying to see if developing a 'host' PCB would even be
fiscally wise to design and construct.  I mean, who needs a 8.7 to 46 MHz
VFO?

And, how mad would Eric or Wayne be with me about the ... um ...
semi-inverse engineering research ... I'd have to do to make this thing
operate?

On the other hand, I wager there's a thousand-plus of these modules sitting
around the planet looking for something to do.  The capitalist in me is
intrigued.

So, a bit of market investigation here:

a)  what would you do with such a device if you had one?  bench signal
generator?  beacon transmitter?  VFO for another radio?

b)  would you pay, say, $100 for a host board to operate your now-surplus
synthesizer?

c)  if someone *else *needed YOUR spare module for THEIR project, what
would you be willing to sell it to them for?  Free?  $25?  More?

[Elecraft] K3S stainless screws

2015-06-17 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Gary,
Yes, I did hear many of you not having any rusting, real mysteries indeed!!
In my case, I live in a high rise apartment about 150m above sea level, 2 km
away from the Victoria Harbour.  My shack is overlooking the Victoria Harbour.
Summer time is about 33-34c with humidity often over 90%.  The standard screws
from Elecraft become rusting after 6 months so that I ordered the USD19.95
stainless steel screws set.  On the contrary, all screws in my Icom radios do
not show any rusting even after 10 years.
Now that Elecraft does listen to the customers, stainless steel screws are a
standard (not option) to K3S.  I think it is fair because no one would expect
an over USD2000 radio does not come with stainless steel screws as standard.
I also do not believe it is Elecraft's idea to squeeze another USD19.95 for
stainless steel screw set from the customers.
Again, it is a good move for Elecraft, responds to customer's suggestion.

FWIW, no rusting here and several of my radials are in salt water on
a slat marsh on the Atlantic, rig is 350 feet away. No rusting so far
since 09.

One of those great mysteries.  ;)

[Elecraft] K3S stainless screws

2015-06-17 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Kiichiro San,
Yes, I did order the K3SSKT stainless screws set for USD19.95.
My question is why for such an elegant radio of over USD2,000, stainless screws
did not come as a standard.  I don't believe Elecraft would like to squeeze the
last bit of merely USD19.95.
Anyway, Elecraft took the customer's feedback and moves to the right direction
for the K3S.
Congratulations to the K3S owners.

Stainless screws are available for K3 as an option. When I ordered a K3 kit, I
ordered the optional stainless screw kit with them.

[Elecraft] K3S stainless screws

Hello Group,
As you are aware, I was the naughty one who always complaint about rusting
screws in K3.  Elecraft now does listen and the K3S is coming with stainless
screws as standard.
For a price tag of over USD2000, it was difficult to understand why the screws
in K3 were rusting.
Anyway, I am now very pleased that Elecraft does listen to its customers. Well
done !

I had one of these that i used for several years until I blew it up (by
mis-treating it).

Note, however, that most of us have varying levels of RF noise in our
environments, and many of us connect equipment together poorly. Whether
or not you hear noise from a particular product will depend on how much
noise is in your environment, how close your antennas are to the noisy
equipment, the frequencies on which you listen, and how you have
interconnected things together.

I probe for RF noise using a Kenwood TH-F6A talkie in close proximity to
the equipment and its wiring. I found the PowerWerx unit RF-quiet, and I
plan to buy a replacement for it.

[Elecraft] ] K3 VFO Tuning Noise

2015-06-14 Thread Johnny Siu
I do not have tuning noise except a number of internal birdies in 10m band.
Moving the cables around the KSYN3A area will minimize the birdies.
My K3 is an earlier model.  I remember I did the tuning noise modification some
years ago.

Johnny,

I have done that mod.

Reason was that my KPA500 had high SWR at the input and barely any gain.
Tracked the problem down to the TR circuit. One of the switching Fet's
(that switch the TR PIN-diodes) had died.
It proved to be an error that happened before, because for a lousy 12
bucks I got all needed parts for a replacement in a mod-package from
Elecraft. Coming with it were two C's to replace in the 12m LPF.  I
replaced them in the same go.

Now all is well!

[Elecraft] Price of K3 before K3S

2015-05-14 Thread Johnny Siu
Can any of you advise what was the previous price for K3/10 kit and assembled?
I notice a price increase in KSYN3A upgrade kit from $190 to $220

[Elecraft] Using KX3 in DMR or other digital voice mode

2015-05-08 Thread Johnny Siu
There is I/Q output from KX3 and a 2m transverter as well.  Can KX3 be operated
in digital voice mode such as DMR or D star with the help of decoding software
in PC?
Digital voice mode becomes popular in V or U.
Any ideas?

[Elecraft] K3 New Synth boards in Eu?

2015-05-05 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Dominic,
To my curiosity, if the KSYNA board were declared as second hand used
electronic parts, would this also attract VAT?
If the answer is negative, you can then ask a friend in US to buy and send it
you which is theoretically second hand product.

Remember VAT (in UK) is charged on the value PLUS the postage costs so
if you paid for an expensive shipping  option you get bitten twice!

There is a low threshold below which no extra costs.

The extra costs on a load of Elecraft kit a couple years back (for me
and a couple others) when $/£ was good too was cheap enough to push the
equation to being able to pay for the Dayton air fare just to collect
the kit and pay the OHIO sales tax.

There is qrpproject.de for Elecraft kit in EU along with lots of other
vendors but not always cheaper but you need to add in the exchange rate
and postage if trying to compare prices.

[Elecraft] KPA500 - Full Power Keydown

2015-04-25 Thread Johnny Siu
Thanks, Jim and all the elecrafters responded to my question about using KPA500
under full power in RTTY contest.
Some of the answers came to me under private emails off the list.  I would like
to thank them as well.
From all the responses, KPA500 is a solid performer under full power in all
modes including those high duty cycle.
I mostly operate SSB so that I do not have much chances to operate KPA500 under
high duty cycle.  Hence, I put up my question in this email listing.

I stated my experience. The difference between 500W and 600W is 0.8 dB.
The difference between 500W and 650W is 1.1 dB.

Early versions of K3 firmware allowed it to cranked to 120 W. That was
reduced to 110 W to place an upper limit on IMD.

You can bet that Elecraft did that throughout the design process, and
probably in final test of the power modules. I know the guy who did that
testing. :)  I've done it myself. It remains clean at the highest power
I can get out of it, which varies a bit depending on the load Z between
600W and 700W.  I've published a link to those measurements several
times on this reflector.
k9yc.com/P3_Spectrum_Measurements.pdf and
k9yc.com/FTDX5000_Report.pdf

The highest power in these reports is 550W, but I've measured up to 650W
and the sidebands get slightly wider (5-10%) and a few dB stronger.

That's a reasonable spec based on my observations with a thousand or
more hours of use.

It's pretty difficult to overdrive the KPA500 -- if you supply more
drive than it wants, it will insert an attenuator between the input
connector and the power amp stage to keep the power within design
parameters. Protection circuitry in the K3, KX3, KPA500, and KAT500 is
set to prevent destructive overheating and keep the signal clean.

If it will do 500W keydown for 10 minutes, it will do 110 seconds for
SSTV. :)

[Elecraft] AF1- active audio filter

2015-04-24 Thread Johnny Siu

    Hello Elecrafters,
I have just finished the construction of the AF1 for a local radio club.
AF1 works very well.  However, when using my K3 to TX, the AF1 picked up the RF
energy and I can hear my voice in my earphone.  I must admit that the antenna
is near to my shack but no RF feedback for any other accessories.
In the circumstances, will this problem be solved if I put the AF1 in a metal
enclosure?
Have any of you come across the same?  The AF1 does not improve the chance of
picking up signals but lessen the listening fatigue.

Yes, correct.  All these AA LiPo should not be charged inside the radio.  I am

Be very careful to charge Lipo batteries only with a charger specifically
designed for that type of battery, unless you don't value your K1 or your

[Elecraft] Internal Battery Alternavives for KX1 ??

2015-04-08 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Jay,
There is a LiPo 3.7v AA size available.  Therefore, 3.7 x 3 = 11.1v in parallel
using the supplied battery holder but re-work the wiring between the two
holders could be a solution.  This kind of battery will go up to 4.2v when it
is fully charged so that the max voltage generated = 4.2v x 3 = 12.6v and still
within the tolerance.
If your KX1 is with KX3080, then it would be a bit tricky in getting the max
power from the radio.

I'm considering ways to increase transmitter power, by making changes to the
internal batteries in the KX1.

I've seen a mod which added batteries. and a lot of other boards and
dangles.

In another mod, the owner just fabricated a larger KX1 chassis bottom and
changed battery holders to obtain 14V.

How about using six AA-size, 2.3 to 2.4 V batteries (if such things exist)
and the existing battery holders in the KX1?

Thoughts?

[Elecraft] ] Is there a K4 on the horizon?

主題︰ Re: [Elecraft] Is there a K4 on the horizon?

Wayne and Eric have repeatedly said that the K3 will be upgradeable to
the K4. Part of the reason that we keep seeing these kinds of "Where's
the K4" posts is that people are conditioned by the "big 3" to expect a
"new" rig every year or two to get the latest and greatest features and
performance. Eric and Wayne give us Elecrafters an ongoing stream of
upgrades and let us chose what we need based on how we operate. This is
why I rarely look at new rigs any more at Dayton. I'm not going to buy
into the IC756/IC765Pro/ProII/ProIII upgrade path any longer. There is
no K3/K3Pro/K3ProII. There is just the continual improvement of a
terrific rig. I'm not going to spend $5100 on the FTDX5000/D/MP/LT just
to have to buy the FTDX5100/D/MP/LT in a year at $5700 to get the
upgraded performance. My K3 is constantly upgraded at a reasonalbe cost,
and I can decide whether or not I want or need the upgrade.

It's not Elecrafters who are drinking the "Kool Aide," it's those people
who EXPECT to have to spend more money every couple of years to get
performance upgrades who are guzzling Kool Aide day and night. Stop
asking for the K4. You've already got it.

Scott, N9AA

[Elecraft] 50 Ohm Load - source?

2015-03-30 Thread Johnny Siu
Very well said, don.
If ham does not need a new dummy load, there are a lot nice ones available in
the used market at a very reasonable price.
Nowadays, frequency counter, RF watt meter and DMM are all available at a much
affordable price.  Even a temperature controlled soldering iron is not
expensive.  All those items were totally out of the question when I started my
hobby at the age of 12.
Let us enjoy our hobby in a much affordable way now.

主題︰ Re: [Elecraft] 50 Ohm Load - source?

I think that attitude spells the difference between "appliance
operators" and those who are willing to check out, and otherwise examine
their ham gear.  How many "transceiver" problems turn out to be problems
with the antenna system?  The number is larger than many are willing to
admit.

In the long past, every ham had at least a few test tools - dummy load
(even if it was a light bulb), and means of measuring RF and SWR (even
if it was a pair of #47 lightbulbs on a piece of 300 ohm twinlead) - and
that gear was used to determine if the transmitter was capable of
producing power and if the antenna system was capable of accepting the
RF power.

There were times when precise and accurate measurement gear was outside
the budget of most hams, so we used substitute methods that gave us some
indication that our transmitters and antennas were performing OK.

Today, reasonably good dummy loads and wattmeters are well within the
budget of the typical ham.  When we are willing to spend $1000 or more
on a transceiver, I find it foolish economy to decline to spend $100 for
a few pieces of test gear to assure ourselves that that $1000+
transceiver is running properly.  It seems some hams would rather 'send
it back to the factory for a checkout' than to make some simple
measurements in the shack - the cost of that trip to the factory will
exceed the cost of the equipment required to do simple testing of the
equipment in place.

It does seem like false 'economy' to me, but I know there are some who
will do just that.
And - when the transceiver returns with "no trouble found" because the
problem was actually in the antenna system, that is not helpful.  The
cause of the problem could have been identified if a dummy load and a
wattmeter had been available and willing to be used for some simple
tests.  The precision of the dummy load and wattmeter need not be
extreme for tests of this sort - even gear with a 20% or greater error
can give clues to the cause of failure in cases like that.

Yes, I now have precision dummy loads and wattmeters whose calibration
is NIST tracable, but I use those for precision measurements.  To do a
'sanity check' of where the problem may be does not require anything
near that precision or accuracy.

As I have stated in the past, every hamshack should have a dummy load
capable of handling the maximum output of that station.  It need not be
exactly 50 ohms non-reactive (unless it is being used for calibration),
but it should be a part of the diagnostic tools available in every hamshack.

Don W3FPR

Shipping of the entire amplifier could be expensive.  The merit of elecraft
products are their module design which is very good for overseas user.  I
simply ship back the defective module instead of the whole machine.
Perhaps, elecraft support could give a schematic to the interested kpa500
owners.

Apparently there is some misunderstanding regarding my comment (Or
people are responding without reading the entire message closely...). I
was NOT responding to the original poster. I was responding to the
second commenter, who said that he needed a schematic because his NEW
KPA500 had failed. My point was that rather than risk further damaging a
NEW, still under warranty KPA500, why not simply let Elecraft fix it.
I'm not sure why it's "unbelievable" that I'd send my NEW amp to
Elecraft for repair, but to each his or her own.

I wasn't suggesting that no one needs a schematic, just that it probably
wasn't the most necessary in that particular situation, where a piece of
gear was NEW and under warranty. A supplied schematic would be nice,
especially given that the skill level of the average Elecrafter might be
somewhat higher than the average ham.

A simple enough request - yet such nasty and unhelpful responses. Are
they really necessary?

And, yes.. schematics should be available for ALL ham equipment. In
fact, they should accompany all ham equipment when purchased.

[Elecraft] Don't have a 50W dummy load

2015-03-24 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Tony,
As suggested by Don W3FPR, you do need a proper 100W dummy load for long run.
Dummy load is  not expensive especially in the used market.  There are still
plenty of left-over from the  paging industry.  My dummy load is a waste
product dismantled from a paging station.
Finish the TX gain calibration first and look for a proper dummy load later.

For those who may be wondering, I received some off-line emails which
actually tried to answer my question. The winner was the suggestion that I
rubber-band my little resistor array (which is actually good for 10W, not
5W as I said before) to a baggie filled with ice. Thanks to all who
provided constructive responses!

[Elecraft] RF gain calibration - K3 Utilities

2015-03-19 Thread Johnny Siu
 Hello Elecrafters,
In the K3 utilities, there is a calibration for RF gain.  Do I need to do it
per band? Or just do one calibration at 40m?
I now have a SARK-110 antenna analyzer / single generator so that I can do per
band calibration if necessary.
Any advice?

[Elecraft] KX-1 80M Question

2015-03-16 Thread Johnny Siu

Apart from the issue about whether 80M is used, the construction of the KXB3080
is a bit tricky.  The new LPF1 will lead to lower power output of the radio.
I mentioned this in this mail listing in the past and put it in my review in :

Jay,

I agree with Phil (the other Phil below!).  My
first KX1, built in 2003 or 2004, had 20/30/40. My
current one has all four bands. 80 m has never
seemed a great QRP band for me, mainly due to the
antenna issues.

The KXAT1 *will* tune 80 m; there may be a mod you
do to it while adding the 3080 module to make that
feasible, not sure but the 3080 module
instructions should tell you.

Another plus of adding 3080 is in receiving 80 m
and other non-ham frequencies, if you use the KX1
that way.

Personally, if you have a KX1 with the original 30
meter module added I see no great benefit in
adding the 3080 option in place of the 30 m module
-- unless you have special interest in operating

80 meters.

[Elecraft] Noise Power Ratio and the K3 with new synthesizer?

> use them as a cross reference to each other.

The issue is that Adam's data is flawed in at least two ways.  The
notch is wider than the SSB filter which means the noise is not being
applied to the product detector or DSP ADC.  Second by reducing the
noise level for DDC receivers, they are not being fairly tested for
the same level of total noise power.  There are also questions about
the effects of roofing filters of different bandwidth - to what degree
do they change the total noise power applied to the entire receiver
chain (including the product detector or DSP ADC)?  Secondly, what are
the effects of AGC ahead of the product detector/DSP ADC and does the
noise power testing really measure dynamic range or is MDS compromised
by the AGC?

With a 3.3 KHz notch, the only way Adam can fairly test receivers is
with a 6 or 15 KHz roofing filter.  If he truly expects to test SSB
performance, the notch width needs to be less than half the width of
the SSB filter.  Secondly, receiver MDS needs to be measured with the
noise present to rule out AGC desensitization.

BTW, Adam's MDS measurements for the two K3s he tested are off by
6 to 9 dB compared to both Sherwood and ARRL Labs while his MDS
values for Icom are within 2 dB of ARRL Labs.  There is something very
unequal about the testing of the K3.

[Elecraft] Noise Power Ratio and the K3 with new synthesizer?

2015-03-12 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Scott,
I am afraid I do not agree to your comments.  I am a owner of both Icom and
entire K-line, I understand what Adam AB4OJ is doing.  Adam knows the design
and structure of K3 no worse than any radio expert here (or at least far better
than me).
Anyway, just let us read both Rob Sherwood and Adam's test data and use them as
a cross reference to each other.  I don't mind reading articles from different
angles.
While there are many CW guru here, voice mode is still the most popular mode
across the HF users.  Some tests under voice mode conditions do give another
view.
I think we just keep our fingers crossed and see what are the results for
IC7851 and K3 new synthesizer model perform in both Adam and Sherwood test.
By the way, both Rob and Adam know each other and do have the chance to
communicate.

I suspect that the "Noise Power Ratio" test was used because that is the
only test that Adam could use to get his beloved Icom gear near the top
of the list. Mr. Farson has had a website devoted to Icom gear for many
years, so I'm not sure if this test could be considered even remotely
objective.

Here is a NPR tutorial from another source, for those interested and

[Elecraft] Contemplating Purchase of K3

I would still consider adding the 100W internal ATU for a couple of reasons.
If your KAT500 goes out and you have to send it back to the mother ship for
repair, you'll still be able to use any antenna you want.  You won't be forced
into finding resonant antennas for the bands you want to operate.  Also, it
will be much easier to operate portable (I know, you have the KX3 :-) ) if you
ever want to do so.  And, the K3 is a great rig for operating portable if you
want more juice than the KX3 offers. Just ask anyone who's been on the recent
DXpeditions that used the K-Line.

Hope this is helpful.

I’m thinking about purchasing the K3-100 kit.  I plan start with the minimum
configuration and adding features as I get the $$..  I already have the KX3,
PX3 and am using the KPA500 and KAT500 with my Icom 756 Pro II.

I’ll assume I won’t need the internal atu with the K3, and will add the P3 and
IF out board when the time comes.  I’ll get the interface cable to the KAT500…
With this bare bones K3, is there anything else that you all might feel is
indispensable?

[Elecraft] FS: Rigol DSA815-TG Tracking Generator Spectrum Analyzer

2015-03-06 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Elecrafters,
About two years ago, I bought this Spectrum Analyzer with a view to doing some
RF projects.  Eventually, I did not have the time and have left this unit
packed and unused.
This analyzer was only turned on a few times to checkfunctionality.  It comes
with alloriginal accessories, certificates, unit is as new.  Works from kHz
~GHz, it is great for tuning antennas, filters, duplexers etc.  For details,
please visit Rigol official website

High resolution pictures are available upon request.  I am looking for a price
of USD1,195 and the shipping costs from Hong Kong to major cities are to my

[Elecraft] OT: the cheapest way to build a six meter beacon

2015-03-01 Thread Johnny Siu
 Hello Elecrafters,
The VR2SIX 6m beacon has been down for some time because the gears have been
used over 20 years and beyond repair.  Local radio club (HARTS) is finding a
way to build up a 6m beacon again but with very limited funds.  The beacon
requirement could be a simple 5W transmitter sending out CWID of VR2SIX.
If you are aware of any useful information, please send me the relevant web
