[Elecraft] K3 rig control with RS-232 does not work with 'cold' radio
I have a K3 with all modules except transverter interface. The radio does not communicate with the PC (or Mac) before it has been on for about 45 minutes - consistently. I turn on one of my rig control/logging programs or K3 utility right after the radio is turned on. Without touching anything the communication does not start to work before the radio has been on for between 30 and 45 minutes. If this had been my K2 I would have checked for dry/cold solder joints but since this is a factory built module I chose so far to leave it alone. Any ideas? -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-rig-control-with-RS-232-does-not-work-with-%27cold%27-radio-tp2392599p2392599.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] External keyers with K3 - recommended?
I have never in my 34 years as a ham used an external keyer and always used either hand pump (old days) or built in keyer in my radios. But I keep hearing folks using external keyers despite built in capabilities. I am a CW enthusiast and over 95% of my Q's are CW. I do like using memories but find the 4 quick memos in the K3 to be sufficient. I'm not interested in using a keyboard nor display to watch the text. Does anyone recommend an external keyer even with the K3?? I would rather not hook on external boxes unless it will give me something extra. If I do, I understand that Logikey and Microkeyer are great products. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/External-keyers-with-K3---recommended--tp2403830p2403830.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K3] K3 - intermittent CW chirp
I have a K3 with almost all the options. I recently installed the KXV3. I'm not sure if the problem started after doing this but I did receive my first chirp report shortly after. The rig is almost a year old but has the newest firmware. It seems to happen when the shift filter is moved and seems to disappear when touching it. But it does not always happen and it is hard to make happen when I purposely try. So it could the shift filter could be coincidental. I have tried with 2 different power supplies and also in a fellow ham's shack so it must be a problem the rig itself. Anyone else experienced this problem? I searched the archive and found only one incident but did not see a solution. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3---intermittent-CW-chirp-tp2941027p2941027.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K3] K144XV - crossband to HF
Here in Norway we re-transmit (with permission from NRRL and Dept. of Communications) the weekly QST transmission on HF to a 2M repeater. This was of course a simple task with a Kenwood TS-2000 since you can xband from VHF to HF. Will this be possible with the K3/K144XV combo? I'm guessing no but thought I'd ask in case someone has a creative solution to this. 73, Are - LB3SA -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K144XV---crossband-to-HF-tp3245290p3245290.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 - intermittent CW chirp
Thanks for the responses. It was also suggested that I do the KSYN mod and then the VCO CAL. I did both and still have the problem. But this is a very localized problem and I am now able to reproduce it whenever I like. I'm actually wondering if this is a bug... so if someone else could please do a test to see if you're also able to hear the chirp I would appreciate it. It only happens for me with a frequency from 3.577.11 to 3.577.19. Any other frequency works fine - when SHIFT is centered... When SHIFT is set to for example 0.45; the problem happens on all frequencies from 3.577.11 - 3.577.19 Power setting or filter WIDTH does not make any difference. I am using a dummy load when testing. You do of course have to listen to yourself on a second receiver if you try this: 1) Set K3 to 80M CW 3.577.15 2) Make sure the SHIFT control is centered at 0.60 and try keying. When I QSY to to 3.577.00 the problem goes away but comes back on all frequencies between 3.577.00 and 3.577.07 when the SHIFT control is set to .045. I can change the frequency slightly the other direction too and reproduce the problem by changing the SHIFT control. The problem is absolutely consistent but the SHIFT control needs to be exact at the 'problem FC' to cause the problem. If you can't reproduce it with these exact settings, maybe try to vary the sift control a few notches. 73, Are - LB3SA Check in with k3support. You may have recent firmware, but you also need to run VCO CAL to take advantage of the latest updates to the synthesizer control algorithm. 73, Wayne N6KR -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3---intermittent-CW-chirp-tp2941027p3269347.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 - intermittent CW chirp
I'm sorry to hammer the board with all these messages but I found one more criteria for the chirp to appear: I have all 8 pole filters: 250Hz, 400Hz, 1.8kHz, 2.8kHz an 6.0kHz installed in the main RX. I am not able to reproduce the problem when WIDTH is set from 400Hz or less. It's only from 450Hz and up I get the problem. The chirp goes away instantly as I hit 400Hz or lower. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3---intermittent-CW-chirp-tp2941027p3269403.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 - intermittent CW chirp
Thanks for your response Tim. It's nice to see that it isn't just me that is going mental! :) I'm surprised however that Elecraft has not responded yet but they may not have seen the message. It does work fine with the TX button activated but I hope it's not really an acceptable workaround in the long run. And you do have to constantly monitor yourself on a second receiver to be sure all is OK. Further testing reveals that (with WIDTH setting to 450kHz or wider): When SHIFT is set to 0.55; the problem happens on all frequencies from 3.577.06 - 3.577.16. When SHIFT is set to 0.60; the problem happens on all frequencies from 3.577.11 - 3.577.21. When SHIFT is set to 0.65; the problem happens on all frequencies from 3.577.16 - 3.577.26. This frequency range is where I spend 90% of my time since ity is Norway's local CW rag chew area so it is important to me that the radio works here. 73, Are - LB3SA AI9K wrote: > > > > LB3SA wrote: >> >> I'm sorry to hammer the board with all these messages but I found one >> more criteria for the chirp to appear: >> >> I have all 8 pole filters: 250Hz, 400Hz, 1.8kHz, 2.8kHz an 6.0kHz >> installed in the main RX. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 - intermittent CW chirp
I did try Bill and we're in touch. They are prompt and excellent as always. More testing revealed that it only happens with the 1.8kHz 8-pole roofing filter on CW... I do have the 1.0kHz roofing filter in my Sub RX and just swapped it so I the 1.8 is in my Sub RX. It now works fine without chirp on all filter settings. I'm still not sure if my particular 1.8kHz filter is partially defect or if only this particular combination of settings causes it but Wayne is looking in to it. 73, Are - LB3SA Bill W4ZV wrote: > > > Did you try k3support at elecraft.com? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 - intermittent CW chirp
Thanks Tim! The width setting doesn't affect it here either as it turns out. What does affect it however is which roofing filter I use which in turn incidentally is switched by using the width control. Your findings made me look more and I do still have chirp but with the different filter configuration I just moved the 'chirp window'. My window now is ending at 3549.83 on 80M. I also for the first time went looking on other bands and the 'chirp windows' are there too... yuck. On 20M my window starts at 14090.54 and ends at 14090.63 when using the 1.0kHz roofing filter and SHIFT set to center (.060). All the above is when using the 1.0kHz roofing filter. I have yet not been able to find a chirp window when using the 400kHz or 250kHz roofing filters. Since the windows are so small and often in the less commonly used CW areas I guess the odds are very small for getting bad reports hence why we haven't heard about this before. 73, Are - LB3SA -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3---intermittent-CW-chirp-tp2941027p3339777.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Is this just the nature of the beast? 2) when I record audio with the AF REC function I can also play it back for listening in the shack by holding the AF PLAY button (this works). According to the latest documentation it should also be possible to playback on the air by first pressing PTT or XMIT button and then play back with the AF PLAY function. But my K3 jumps back to RX as soon as I hold the AF PLAY button. [Elecraft] Cannot adjust center frequency after update to 2.73
I cannot seem to adjust the center freq. anymore for CW and data. I also lost my side tone. Center freq is locked to 0.00 on CW and 1.35 on Data. Both with the asterisk showing. [Elecraft] K2 - signal loss in band-pass filter
I recently completed my K2 and everything seemed to work OK. All tests are ok with exception of a slightly low 8V regulator output (7.59V). The sensitivity seems low however (my KX1 is much better at this point). Tracing the receiver revealed that sensitivity is top notch at certain points. This is where it gets weird... When I inject a signal on the north side (according to schematic) of C7 (40m), C15 (80M), C24 (20M) and the same on all other bands, the sensitivity is great. But when I inject the signal on the other side of these capacitors (pin 8 on the relays), the level drops (at least 20db) to the same as what it is at antenna, W6, W1,D2/D3, D3/D4 and all other points along the signal path. I removed W6 and RFC7 to isolate the problem and to see if anything in the T-R switch or Low Pass filters could pull the signal down but there is no change. I still only hear a weak signal when I inject a signal at pin7 or 8 on the respective relays. But as soon as I touch either side of C6 for 40m, L7 for 80m, C22 for 20m etc, it is as strong as it should be. I have measured all the relays for potential shorts but they seem to be fine. Any ideas out there? 73, Are - LB3SA -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K2---signal-loss-in-band-pass-filter-tp17294418p17294418.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Thoughts
Well said John! But I also agree that it is of essense for Elecraft that we are allowed to, and able to give feedback and 'want lists'. Then Elecraft can use this information as they desire to further develop the K3 and maybe even get input to a potential 'K4'. If someone asks for something that is out of scope or just too much; well... no big deal! Then they can just ignore it and life goes on. Yeasu has a history of 61 HF rigs and they still manage to squeeze in new features/styles/looks just about every release. Icom has made 47 HF radios and Kenwood 36 (ref. RigPix). So think about this for a minute: Elecraft is currently on their 4th HF rig. Two of these 4 Elecraft rigs are topping the ARRL QST/Sherwood engineering lists of receivers (and to me a good RX is no doubt #1 priority in a radio). Not all 148 rigs mentioned above are on that particular list but we do have a reasonably clear indication that Wayne and Eric and others at Elecraft are not totally lost when it comes to HF radio design. But even these superstars cannot satisfy every ham radio operator in the world - at least not at the same time - within the same box. But I'm absolutely certain that they are listening and will try their best to develop something even better if and when they can. When was the last time _your_ input helped shape the next YeaWoodComTec rig? I bet dollars to donuts that Elecraft's next HF rig (K4?) will have one-touch band switching and VFO stacking amongst other things. Personally I like to buy new rigs once in a while and I would be very disappointed if Elecraft didn't release anything new within the next 10 years or so - with or without one-touch everything. So look at it positively: There _is_ and always will be room for improvement. We have something to look forward to and we have been blessed with an American ham radio manufacturer that caters to us and not only is listening well but actually talks back to us - promptly at that! You won't hear any complaints from me; but I can't guarantee that I won't come up with suggestions in an effort to assist with the never ending brainstorming. As (experimenting) radio amateurs I don't think it's a big stretch for some of us to never be 100% satisfied with the rig in front of us and to always look for ways to make it better - regardless of how good it is out of the box. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - signal loss in band-pass filter
Thanks to both for info and assistance. You were right Don about the 'weirdness' when injecting signals by C7. It turns out that the sensitivity issue was caused by a tiny solder bridge on the SMD MC1350 (IF amp) which I found by injecting a signal @ IF freq. before and after the IF Amp. The receiver is now working very nice with an IMD of -136db. The filter/BFO set-up went without a hitch and RX sounds like a million bucks with absolutely no signs of ringing with tight filtering. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - signal loss in band-pass filter
It was actually one of your earlier posts (thanks!) that prompted me to inject the IF signal before and after the IF Amp. At that point I had pulled out lot of hair and lost sleep over a low sensitivity K2. As to when the solder bridge got there... I'm not 100% certain that a bridge was the problem. But after I realized that the IF Amp was not amplifying I went over the solder points around the chip (I actually removed the chip and installed it again). The radio then started to work. It was actually a bit of a surprise since I never saw the problem - especially since I looked very closely at all the points through an amplifying glass many times before AND since all the voltages at MC1350 measured at specs while I had the problem. It was just the IF signal that wasn't amplifying leading me to at first think that the chip itself was defect. I only assume it was a solder bridge. And if that's the case it was probably made by me. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - signal loss in band-pass filter
My 8 volt regulator also outputs exactly 7.56V. I replaced it with one I bought here in Norway last week. It's also quite low at 7.62 volt. Specs guarantee it to be over 7.5V if I remember correctly so I guess we can't complain too much. But if you have a hard time getting the ALC voltage up to 3.8 volt according to the manual you can solder a 10K resistor across RP6 pins 3-4 on the control board (Gary from Elecraft suggested this for me). This works great and I now see 3.8V but it doesn't really make much of an audible difference. Are - LB3SA TF3KX wrote: > > In my case I never resolved if the MC1350 actually was bad. Denis, I can only think of two likely reasons that your headphones work but your speaker doesn't.: 1) Remove the top panel on your K2 and look for a connector on the front right side of the radio (close to the on/off switch). It is labeled "SPKR" and "P5". Make sure the connector is connected and pushed all the way in. 2) Or it could be that your headphone jack is defect. You can test this with an ohm meter.
