Re: [Elecraft] K1 backlight kit
The link in the email you sent is similar to what I did. It did not work with the original LCD. Putting a white sheet behind the original LCD did nothing as it was opaque. I had to get a transreflective one, the key here is it's translucent to permit back-lighting. It was long ago and I don't have the info where I got it. IDK, but it is possible that production switched to using the transreflective type at some point. I'll pm you some pix. Re: [Elecraft] K1 backlight kit
If you can't find a kit: I modded my K1 to illuminate the LCD back in '03, before the mod kit was available. It's pretty easy to do (a white sticker, two leds, and a resistor) and works very well, but it does require a transreflective LCD in place of the original reflective one supplied back then. I tried the mod with original LCD and it didn't work IDK if later ones came standard with the transreflective LCD. If you have or can get a transreflective LCD, I'd be happy to describe the mod and email some photos that detail the mod and show the results. George, If you operate mostly on battery, use the 2ma. option, otherwise I would use the 6 ma. for its extra brightness - but best is to install it initially for 2 ma, and then look at it to see if you think it is bright enough. I don't think there is room for a switch. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/16/2014 12:59 PM, George Averill wrote: Does anyone have suggestions for installing the backlight mod in the K1? [Elecraft] K1 backlight; trimming pins
I am getting ready to install my backlight on my unbuilt K1. Step #1 is ³flush-trim all component leads which are located BETWEEN the two rows of LCD PC board pads...² Does this mean to flush-trim the pins of the U1 HOLDER? These pins are only 1 mm above the board. Am I really supposed to try to cut these even closer to the board? Must the Insulator card assembly be perfectly flat on the board, or is being 1 mm above the board fine? Thanks. Re: [Elecraft] K1 backlight; trimming pins
Paul, Use flush cutters and trim them as close as you can. Yes, that 1mm matters. If you do not trim them, the LCD will contact the metalwork on the front panel assembly and may break when you put things all together. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/19/2013 5:35 PM, Paul Roche wrote: I am getting ready to install my backlight on my unbuilt K1. [Elecraft] K1 Backlight Installation
I've reached the point in assembling my K1 where I install the backlight kit and have a few questions: 1. I assume that the black neoprene LCD spacer that comes with the K1 is not used when the backlight kit is installed? In other words, the only items under the LCD will be the insulator card and backlight? 2. The K1 manual directs shifting to the backlight installation instructions immediately after the installation of U1. However, one of the first steps of the backlight instructions is to remove U1. Is this step only applicable when installing the backlight on a completed K1 where the LCD has to first be removed, or is it also applicable to the backlight installation during a new build of a K1 (i.e., LCD not previously installed)? 3. Under the section Preparation of the Backlight Installation Site, the backlight instructions direct the flush-trim of all component leads between the two rows of LCD PC board pads. Does this mean to flush-trim the U1 socket pins or does the insulator card rest on top of the untrimmed U1 socket pins? 4. The backlight instruction graphic shows the right side of the foam tape on the insulator card being completely flush with the right side of the blue backer paper. However, on my insulator card, the right side of the blue backer paper extends about 1/16 inch beyond the right side of the white foam tape. Should I trim the right side of the blue backer paper to be flush with the right side of the white foam tape? 5. Step 25 of the backlight instructions directs the testing of the backlight illumination level prior to soldering the LCD pins. Since I've yet to assemble the RF board and, therefore, can't apply power to the backlight as directed in this step, is there any other testing of the backlight that I need to do prior to soldering the LCD pins? I have finally started to install this kit as I needed to pop the rig open to fix a problem and wonder if I'm missing a part. When I opened the plastic envelope, I have four parts: 2 resistors, the LCD display, and the Backlight (with pins A K). According to the parts list, I should have a 5th part called Insulator Card Assembly #E850215 which, according to step #14, includes double-sided foam tape. [Elecraft] K1 backlight
I thought that I would share a little report about my recent K1 backlight installation. I was very nervous about tearing into a perfectly good working radio. But as someone recently said to me, once you make the first snip on a connection the radio is broken and now needs to be fixed! The old display came off easily but cleaning out the pad holes on the board for the new display was a real pain, and there sure are a lot of them. Using as little heat as possible I was able to remove much of the solder with solder wick but most of the holes remained filled. I ended up heating up each pad and, while the solder was still melted, pushed a steel sewing pin through the hole. The solder doesn't stick to the steel and as soon as it solidified I could pull the pin back out, leaving a hole just big enough for the new display leads. That was the really tough part of the job. Getting the power to the backlight took a little bit of finesse but it wasn't too bad, and installing the new display on top of the backlight went smoothly. From start to finish the whole job took about 3 hours. The upgrade was well worth the cost and effort. That green glow really looks great and I can now easily read the display even in a dark room. 73 Paul - N8XMS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K1 backlight control
Rather than sacrifice the AGC control, I handled the on/off of the K1 backlight by adding an internal on/off switch. I used a very small Elecraft DPDT switch left over from the K1 Upgrade Kit I installed awhile back (I didn't need the ability to turn the tx mixer on during receive, so the switch was unused). Looking at the the front panel's rear (where the MCU is located) I installed it on the upper right corner of the PC board. The switch is so small it is held in place with a tiny drop of medium thick CA glue. See picture at: http://home.earthlink.net/~windependent/images/switch.jpg I drilled two very small holes through the PC board with a pin vise and wired the switch in series with the anode of the backlight diode using kynar coated wire. I leave the light on all the time when at home in the shack (95% of my operating). When portable or if current drain is an issue, all i need to do is back out the 4 screws holding the front panel in place and flip the switch. [Elecraft] K1 Backlight Kit
Thanks, Tom (N0SS) Wayne (N6KR) for the backlight upgrade for my K1. Now, the rig is complete! While the kit and instructions are first rate, this upgrade is not for the faint of heart. Although I was careful not to use any more heat than necessary in removing the cut pins from the old LCD, I did have one PCB trace lift up. To restore the path, I fabricated a jumper from a piece of the thin enamelled wire left over from the K1 kit. I'd suggest forgetting about desoldering braid and solder suckers to clear solder from the PC board. With the help of the XYL, we were easily able to clear the holes using a toothpick (just push and twist). I think the toothpick helps to carry away some of heat, too, protecting the PC board traces. [Elecraft] K1 Backlight!!!!
Tom and the rest of the gang, Gene N0MQ and I got together yesterday evening to give each other moral support for the backlight mods. The modification went well and like other have said, makes the K1 perfect!! Tom did a masterful job on the manual, very professional. The mistake on the backlight--Gene and could have made both ours work without trimming, however, we did go ahead and trim to 1.25 inches. Thanks Tom for a great mod for the K1. cu es 72, Bart W0IIT K1 #907 -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Re: [Elecraft] K1 Backlight Kit
Jim wrote: While the kit and instructions are first rate, this upgrade is not for the faint of heart. Although I was careful not to use any more heat than necessary in removing the cut pins from the old LCD, I did have one PCB trace lift up. It would appear to be somewhat taxing, just looking at the effort required to remove the old LCD. I'd like to review the instructions for this mod, but I can't find the instruction sheet for this upgrade on the Elecraft site. Since I use my K1 as a battery-powered portable rig 95 percent of the time, my major concern would be the increase in steady-state receiver current consumption of 10 to 20 percent for display illumination that can't be turned off without using some ersatz technique. Maybe it's time for a K1A, with menu controllable LCD illumination AND a display that shows the whole frequency at once and not just the last three digits. I realize that, due to exhausted I/O capability in the current K1 MPU system, these suggested features would *not* be trivial to implement, and that they would require complete replacement of the re-designed front panel board to backfit to older K1s. I'd be willing to pay for one of those. Realistically, I don't expect to see any further development of the K1 product line. I suspect that KX1 kit production costs are significantly below those of a K1 kit. [Elecraft] K1 Backlight
I love it. It's nice to sit in the darkened shack late at night with only the sound of CW and the faint glow of the display. I was able to use a razor saw and miter box for cutting to length. http://www.micromark.com search for miter box I made the cut in two steps - cutting from both sides to avoid chipping the surface. Re: [Elecraft] K1 Backlight a WINNER
Eric: The only problem I had was with the length of the LED backlight. Page 4 shows an illustration that says to cut it to 1-1/4, but doesn't say anything about having to cut it in the directions. Mine had obviously already been cut...poorly. It was cut at an angle and was about 1-1/2 long. This is a little too long for the space it fits in, but probably would work. I recut it squarely to 1-1/4 with a razor saw before removing the masking tape used during the original cutting. The mis-cutting is MY FAULT! And for that I sincerely apologize. Elecraft was anxious to get this mod out to users and I volunteered to cut the (K2) backlights into K1-sized pieces for them on my desk-top bandsaw. Apparently I must have mis-measured when I placed the center point on your backlight. Sorry about my error. Though I'm glad to hear you were able to recover cleanly. I'll be much more diligent in the future when cutting the next batch of backlight. 73, Tom HammondN0SS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K1 Backlight a WINNER
Just got my K1 Backlight Kit, and installed it. It took maybe an hour. More details on my website: www.ke6us.com The only problem I had was with the length of the LED backlight. Page 4 shows an illustration that says to cut it to 1-1/4, but doesn't say anything about having to cut it in the directions. Mine had obviously already been cut...poorly. I recut it squarely to 1-1/4 with a razor saw before removing the masking tape used during the original cutting. I used the 200 ohm resistor for the brightest display, which is none to bright. It's nowhere near as bright as the K2 if that's what you are expecting. However, I think it will be just fine in a campsite where you want to see the display, but not light up the campsite. Besides, if it isn't bright enough, it will take 10 minutes to open the radio and change the resistor later. I'm going to live with it and see how it is in the field. I measured total current drain at 68ma with a K1-4 with ATU. I can certainly live with that. I'm happy with the mod.
