Hi Tom,

If your current set up works well, why not just wait until the K4 is
being delivered. Then choose.

I have the same set up as you for the past ten years. Am happy to wait
for the call to come to me for a K4. I am in group 2.

I’ve sent emails to Eric and Wayne, with no response. Telephone calls to
Elecraft seem to indicate they have no idea either about what is going on. I am
in the first group for the K4, but think this is unlikely to ever ship!

In the meantime, I am running my K3/P3/KPA500/KTA500. Works well.

So, the purpose of this email is to generate information about what I should
purchase to replace the K3. My predominant operation is high speed CW, so ask
is very important to me.

Maybe the Kenwood?

Your thoughts are solicited!

Hey Alan

My heart goes out to you as your circumstances seem unimaginable to me.

I think 2020 is a year not many of us want to remember and generally if we do
not too much of it's positive.

Your humor is admirable and should help all round including the un-male thing

There's been quite a bit from Wayne on this reflector, and updates in
their monthly update. You may have heard that there's a pandemic, and
the west coast has been experiencing massive wildfires. Both of these
disasters have caused huge disruption of our lives, businesses, the
supply chain for every imaginable product. My neighbor K6XX, a
manufacturing engineer at Elecraft, lost the superstation he had built
from scratch on 80 acres he had cleared himself. That same fire burned
out three other neighbor hams, and stopped at the edge of the road
bordering our land.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 built-in operating manual now available

2020-10-08 Thread Grant Youngman
Even if you could do that, it might not be as useful as you expect.
Sections/topics are linked from a main page and keywords, but not paginated.
And there’s no page numbered “index” to help you get around. This is more of a
greatly expanded “help" function than a typically organized manual. It would
be hard to get around in it on paper, unless you did a lot of reformatting
and/or indexing before printing it.

Just one though on the subject.

2020-10-08 Thread Nigel Lemaire
I kind of like that the K4 has a built in manual, which is no doubt
updated as required AUTOMATICALLY.

Is there a provision to print out the manual from the K4?  I'm pretty
much a "paper person" and print out all my manuals. Not having to
revisit the Elecraft web to see if a more recent version of a manual is
available would be a  nice bonus IMHO.

Hi Doug,

If someone wants to translate the built-in manual into another language, we'll
definitely make it accessible. In that case we would have to share the source
material with them. It's authored as a Google doc so this is easy to do.

Get a KX2. It will probably be at least a couple of years before announcement
of its replacement will make it instantly obsolete and unusable in the manner

Thanks. I finally got ny refund for first group K4D. Was looking at a 6400,
because I don't do cw right now, but will take a look at the 890 as well.

2020-10-08 Thread John Shingara
Tom,

The Kenwood TS-890 is on my short list should I grow too impatient waiting for
the K-4. I have almost pulled the trigger many times on it.

That said, earlier in this waiting process I bought a Flex 6400M and almost
immediately regretted it. Great radio, but not an Elecraft and not for me. I
sold it and am now focusing on working my KX3 and KX2 QRP in the field.
Getting a new shiny transceiver now is wonderful, but if it isn’t the one you
really want, you may have buyers remorse later. Luckily I only lost about $400
on my Flex folly. I’m waiting for the K4 and I’m in the second group so I
still have a long wait. Maybe this time next year.

[Elecraft] K4 replacement?

2020-10-08 Thread Tom Doligalski via Elecraft
I am a bit depressed about the lack of feedback from Elecraft about the K4.

You're right, Andy - I've heard from tops ops that own them that the
TS590s are very nice rigs, and ARRL Lab tests show them much cleaner
than ICOM and Yaesu. I've recommended it to several hams who can't
afford Elecraft. (Although used K3s are getting to be a real bargain!).

AND, ( stated as kindly as I can) You'll wear out the manual before the
radio.
I was a Yaesu fan-boy, putting up with the seemingly endless menu's all

I'm cured now and am waiting to save a few buks on the K4Kit.
Guess I should probably sell my couple year old K3S package eh?

You get what you pay for. Yaesu has been making very dirty radios -- clicks
and splatter have been the rule. Elecraft rigs have always been very clean
on CW, less so on SSB, but nothing like Yaesu on SSB.

"You get what you pay for. Yaesu has been making very dirty radios --"

I'm not sure I see the connection between part 1 and part 2. I paid for a
Kenwood TS-590S. Actually I have two of them. I don't think this radio ever
sold for more than about $1,600 and to the best of my recollection it's not
high on anyone's dirty transmitters list (assuming a Chinese TCXO was not
fitted).

I have never felt I could have worked more DX with a "better" rig. Better
antennas - sure, better rig - no. My flying sucks up all my money. None left
for K4.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 vs. K4D Question

2020-10-06 Thread Chris R. NW6V
Terry,

I could use your self-description by adding "used to" in the context of
contests (I'm up to 297 confirmed and contest opportunities for the rest
are slim to none).

Then I'd add: "lives on tiny urban/city lot surrounded by both horrible QRM
and hills."

My antennas were as you describe: a 2-el 5-band beam up a whopping 30 feet,
and a wire running through and around trees like a demented pretzel at that
same height. And you're right, while diversity thrives on differences, it
doesn't thrive on THOSE differences.

In my quest for DXCC on 40 and 80, I'd added a pair of DXE active receive
verticals and noise canceller in a failed attempt to phase my way through
the s5-s6 noise wall - there were far too many noise sources for
cancellation to be effective. So I was left with a receive antenna that
didn't work all that well in noise-hell, either.

Then, after letting it sit mostly unused for 6 months, I tried diversity
reception.

Wow.

When you're working down near the noise, QSB can kill many a QSO. But even
with my minimal antennas, the way signals "float" as the RF rotates through
polarizations is remarkable to hear: a signal that would otherwise be lost
often comes up in one ear just as it drops in the other... I recently
worked VK6LW when he was unreadable on either the long-wire or the receive
ant, but was readable with diversity turned on.

It sometimes seems like the difference between mono and stereo music.

Anyway, diversity reception was unquestionably the key to 80M DXCC from
this QTH.

Point is: if my K3 hadn't already had that second receiver, it's unlikely I
would have added one just to try. So if you can swing the cash - like a
good scout: "be prepared."

Agreed on all counts. I read more than two dozen email reflectors, and
Thunderbird makes it easy to to sort each into its own mailbox. I've
never used it to sort topics, but agree that the Subject Line is the
ideal sort range. I use subject line sorts to sort to the mailboxes.

Thunderbird is very versatile -- it can be set to read by thread, or by
individual emails. I strongly prefer the latter, because it's easier to
delete stuff that strays off topic.

I have also filtered a few "from" addresses directly to trash because
the emails are often argumentative, political, or otherwise unfriendly.

I've never done that -- my delete key works fine.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Power Supply Recommendation

2020-10-06 Thread John Shingara
Thanks everyone for the replies and advice; much appreciated. This is exactly
the kind of question I would bring to my SK father so it was very nice to read
the advice posted as if it were coming from dad. It was all practical
interesting. It made me miss having these discussions in his shack while he was
building some project.

I have since ordered an Astron RS-70M-AP. It’s a big old (48 lb) linear and
more than I will probably ever need. The 70 was only $10 more than the 50 on
HRO and it has a cooling fan where the 50 does not so I thought it may be more
robust. I plan to run all of my HF from this amp (KX3, KX2, and hopefully
soon a K4). I’ll use the PowerWerx SS30DV switcher for my Yaesu FTM-400DR VHF
and UHF in he shack.

Thanks again everyone!

[Elecraft] K4 mail filter for Thunderbird

2020-10-05 Thread Jim McCook
I have saved URLs to 10 reflectors, but always have opted _OUT of Email_
from all of them.  The saved links are to their _archives_ only, viewing
by thread.  Some, like the Elecraft reflector and all the groups.io
lists, are continuous.  Other archives for lists like CQ-Contest, RFI
list, etc. require changing the month in the saved URL when a new month
appears.  Not a big problem... takes only seconds each month.

This way I just click on the bookmarked URL for the reflector that I'm
interested in and view the threads.  I probably view 10% or less of all
the posts on the Elecraft reflector.  I can't imagine actually getting
Email from all the posts or having to set up filters for new ones that
appear that I'm not interested in viewing.  It makes these reflectors
light years easier to manage as compared to getting all those emails!

Re: [Elecraft] K4 mail filter for Thunderbird

2020-10-05 Thread Gwen Patton
I just use GMail. I scroll through my emails and look at the subject. If it
has something in it I don't want to read, I check the box at the left.
After I go through all of them that way (not even opening them yet), I
click the "mark as read" button. All the marked emails get moved out of my
inbox to the "read" portion. They aren't gone, I can go back and read any
of them if I want to, but I don't have to read them NOW. I go to the bottom
of my remaining unread emails, open the last one, and read it. Then I hit
the arrow at the top right, and move to the next email. Lather, rinse,
repeat.

Not all that hard.

If there is something that pops up frequently, I create a filter for it,
and just mark it as read. On rare occasions, I make a folder and send the
offenders to Coventry. Other than that, I read pretty much everything else.

2020-10-05 Thread Don Wilhelm

Mike,

Easy with Thunderbird,

Make a filter for your incoming mail - If the subject line contains K4,
move it to whichever folder you would like.

That will work as long as everyone puts 'K4' in the subject line. For
the rest, you will have to use the Delete key.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 mail filter for Thunderbird

2020-10-05 Thread Steve KC6ZKT

I use Thunderbird on some of my machines, Apple Mail on others.

Because Apple Mail leaves even much more to be desired than Thunderbird,
I was using procmail on my ISP's server to do all of my filtering to
mailboxes. Later, the authors stopped maintaining it, and I switched to
a similar, more up-to-date tool. I recommend that you ask your ISP what
they have installed. If they're running Linux, then they might have
Pigeonhole [ https://pigeonhole.dovecot.org ] available.

It's much cleaner to do all of the filtering at my mailbox, rather than
on each desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone I might want to access it from.

The power system for my K3/P3 consists of a large SLA AGM battery that is
float-charged froma West Mountain Radio PGS-40 and an Astron RS-25, which I
adjusted to 14.2V to accommodatethe drop through the wiring, the PGS-40 and the
RigRunner. This has kept things very quiet for me,and also keeps me on the air
through any AC power interruptions, and I use it at both my primaryQTH in south

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Power Supply Recommendation

2020-10-05 Thread Hank via Elecraft
Assuming the K4 likes a little extras voltage like the K3S (14.2VDC for mine),
I have been running an Astron RM-50 linear for 10 years or so and would
recommend it or the 35 amp version.  I modified the voltage sense circuit to
follow the voltage at the rear of the K3s to help with voltage drop around a
power gate.  The only time it has been off was for the modification and if the
AC power fails.

It powers all of my station accessories with a little room to spare.

The power werx switching supply is also on the bench - bought it before my K3s
for VHF/UHF radios.  It has been repaired once for the choke on the input power
lead - it failed and made terrible broadband noise.  It is 6 years old.  It has
a little higher ripple than the Astron - always has.  Probably not a big deal
though.

My $0.02.

As there is not even a block diagram published, I don't know the answer,
but ideally one would not want baseband analogue audio anywhere in the
path, so one would not want a sound card, integrated or not, but rather
direct access to a digital feed from the DSP.

Hi:

I fully concur, when you look at the prices we paid for the K3/K3S and
all those extras, the current price of the K4D seems like a good price
to me. Sure hoping that my K4D will arrive before Xmas. Only time will
tell, it will be almost a year since I purchased the K4D. Fingers are
getting itchy, so much that I went out and bought a couple of those

Re: [Elecraft] K4 vs. K4D clarification

2020-10-04 Thread stephen shearer

Terry,

I am most likely at the end of the group, too.
I originally ordered a K4.
I change the order this past spring, to the K4D.
I "don't need" a K4, even.  I have great fun wit a KX3 + PX3 + KXPA100...
I wanted a home station so that the KX3 was my portable station.
I looked at the "D" upgrade as, an "Easter gift" and "the boss" approved.
Yes, I would like to have it for Christmas even if it is a year late.
And it my be Easter 2021...

And as my wife says about buying a dress, it isn't just the dress, it is
also the accessories...
The accessories will be added this coming Christmas.  Computer,
Monitor(s), upgrade the coax, and maybe 500 watts + AC power upgrade
(100 year old house).

Hello all,

I am sorry if I miscommunicated. I have received several private emails
thinking I have been called and expect delivery of a K4. I have NOT been
called. I was just referring to when that time comes. I don't expect a
call for months. I was very late in the first group.

I still need some feedback to help me make my decision when that time comes.

73,

Terry

Given that the K4 can be upgraded to a K4D in the field, why don’t you start
out with the K4, how it goes, and decide to upgrade later.

[Elecraft] K4 vs. K4D Question

2020-10-04 Thread n7tb
I am rather late in the first prepay group and requested a K4. I was
strongly considering upgrading to the K4D when I got the call that my rig
was about ready to ship. Now that the pricing is out, I see that it is a
$900 difference. That gives me a bit of pause, not because it isn't worth
the price, but because I am not sure my style of operating would justify it.

I would appreciate it if some of you with more experience in such things
might be able to give me some insights. Here is my operating information:

1. I am predominantly a CW operator
2. I do enjoy working DX contests, but as a hunt and pounce guy, just
looking for countries I may have not worked before. I am not a serious
contester trying for points and awards.
3. For non-dx contests, I operate at or near QRP levels to see how well
I am getting out on my antennas.
4. I am predominantly a rag chewer on CW, or casual operator for
regular CW QSO's.
5. I have two antennas, one a Yagi for 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters.
The other is an EFHW for 30 (with tuner) 40 and 80.

I am not sure diversity receive would be all that useful with such different
antennas. The yagi is useless as a receive antenna on 30, 40, and 80, and
the EFHW can receive and transmit on the higher bands, but does not have
directionality or gain, and the 40 and 80 meter bands are predominantly for
local and US. operations.

I think diversity receive might be useful with QSB conditions if I am
operating on 20 meters and up and letting the EFHW try to help, but that one
advantage would not be worth the difference in price for the K4D, especially
with the band conditions we currently have.

If I am going to check a different band, I usually just change bands and
look at the panadapter to see how active the band is. Not sure having VFO B
connected to a different antenna, (like working 20 on the Yagi on A and
possibly working 40 on the EFHW on B would gain me much. I would most
likely just use VFO A, and change bands.

I look forward to your thoughts and what opportunities I might be missing by
not getting the K4D. I would guess there are others in this group that
would be interested in the responses as they make the same decision.

Thanks so much, and 73,

Terry, N7TB

Yes, same as the USB CAT and sound card for the K3S so you will just
need a usb cable to your computer. Standard drivers so no need for a
driver disk like some other radios.

Best guess with 10 W drive and a completely stock amp: 250-400 W, varying by
band.

I don’t have a KPA1500 on my bench at the moment. No doubt someone will weigh

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Pricing Posted

2020-10-04 Thread Chris Codella, W2PA
Another way of looking at this is through the lens of history and
inflation. In 1969 a set of Drake twins (R-4B, T-4XB, MS-4, AC-4) cost
$1149.85 (in the 1969 Lafayette Radio catalog). That translates to
$8136.60 in 2020. I daresay that the K4's features and performance are
just a tad bit better. ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] K4 sound card capability

2020-10-04 Thread Neil Zampella

Terry,

the K4 will connect with a USB cable to your PC, you will not need a
Signalink.  It will have a much better soundcard than the Signalink
provides.    Since the K4 manuals are now online, you can download the
PDF and see for yourself.

FWIW .. you don't need the Signalink with the KX3, just a set of stereo
cables, and a USB soundcard.

The K3S, K3 with KIO3B, and K4 all have built-in "sound cards". I've used this
capability for FT8 and RTTY with AFSK.

The single USB cable makes available a "sound card" and a virtual serial port
that looks to your PC like an RS-232 serial port.

Absolutely!

My INITIAL order for K3s w/ P3, etc. was: *$4387.87 in 2016*.
Add in *$570 for more filters* over the years (AM, FM, and HF)
THEN in Dec 2019, I did a final "fill it up" order because I saw the EOL
coming on things: *$2435.48 fo*r

*SubRX**
**    Gen Coverage and filters for SubRX**
**    2 Meter module and REFLOCk board**
** Pair of Speakers*

All-in, not counting maintenance costs or anything else:

*$7303.35 for a fully outfitted K3s/P3 with dual Receivers and Gen
Coverage thru HF to 2 meters.*

The K4 looks a LOT more reasonable than one might think from my perspective.

To get a rig from Elecraft pre-K4 such as the K3S, compared with the
K4D, you would have to add a K3S SUB RX, synthesizer board, at least
one CW or narrow SSB filter (or both), the I/O board for all the
antenna connections, a P3, a P3 SVGA option, a P3 TX monitor option,
a digital voice recorder.  And, I’ve probably forgotten a few, such
as the K4’s ethernet connection and all that implies.

Throw in the extras offered by the K4D and man this is a great deal.
For example the P3 cannot compare with the display on the K4(D).

Throw in performance and it’s even better.

Enjoy the hobby whatever you choose to get.  Fun is the name of the game.

I was disappointed to see the pricing for the K4. I thought the base

do not include the ATU ($400) or even a hand-held Mic. The total for
the K4D that I was thinking of purchasing would have been almost
$5470. (+shipping ??) it’s out of my price range. It will be
interesting to see what the K4HD goes for. I’m glad that I had my
$1500 deposit refunded several months ago. I have to wonder if one
will really be able to tell the difference between any K4 and the
FTDX101D which can be purchased for under $3000 and includes the ATU
and a Mic

I hope you folks enjoy the K4 as I’m sure it will be a great radio.
I will continue to use my K3s as the price for that fine radio is
dropping like crazy and has allowed me to pick up a second one for a
surprisingly low price.

as the K4’s ethernet connection and all that implies.

Throw in the extras offered by the K4D and man this is a great deal.
For example the P3 cannot compare with the display on the K4(D).

Throw in performance and it’s even better.

Enjoy the hobby whatever you choose to get.  Fun is the name of the

I hope you folks enjoy the K4 as I’m sure it will be a great radio.
I will continue to use my K3s as the price for that fine radio is

[Elecraft] K4 sound card capability

2020-10-04 Thread Terry Brown
I have a KX3 which connects to a signalink that connects to my computer for
digital modes.

I have not owned a K3(S). I assume the K4 has an internal sound card to take
the place of the signalink but I don’t know how it interfaces to my computer
and it’s programs. Is the only thing needed a usb connection between the K4 and
computer?

Hoping to see my K4 by year’s end. I’m near the end of Group 1 and have no
idea how many are in Group 1.

Thanks!

Terry

I agree Gary,

I think the price corrected for inflation and performance has actually
dropped compared to my fully loaded, dual loaded K3 nearly 10 years ago
( and sold keeping my single receiver K3 which I upgraded as far as
possible.) So I was comfortable with the price.

I'm in the group 2 bunch.

To get a rig from Elecraft pre-K4 such as the K3S, compared with the K4D, you

Plus the K4 has a large, full-color, touchscreen display, Ethernet LAN,

[Elecraft] Elecraft K4 Kit Prices

2020-10-03 Thread Paul Van Dyke
It is my humble opinion that a good start to think about for the price to
save money for a Elecraft K4 Kit is 10% below the cost of a full factory
assembled unit.

I've been in business for 40 years, and looking at many units, 10% below
is just about right. You must realise that with the K4 and both the K3/K3S,
the circuit boards were compartmentised to the extent that the biggest part
seemed to be assembly of the unit inside the chassis, and testing.

And the KX2/KX2 and the KXPA100 are in the same class..

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Pricing Posted

2020-10-03 Thread Ian Kahn
Wayne,

I completely understand the challenges with getting the kit version ready.
I don't have a prepaid order and am perfectly willing to wait (although,
admittedly, with baited breath :-) ) for the Elecraft team to be able to
get all the pieces and parts of the kits ready to go, safely and
efficiently.

I am just curious about the estimated cost difference between the factory
version and the kits. I want to start putting aside my pennies now, and
want to have a somewhat reasonable target.

I hope for everyone on the Elecraft team to be and stay safe, both from
COVID and the fires.

Ian,

Due to the pandemic and fires the kit version will be delayed longer than we'd
hoped. The kit requires additional documentation and manufacturing/shipping
procedures, and unfortunately the personnel involved (including me) have been
preoccupied.

Sorry I can't put a date on it. If you choose to convert to factory assembly,

Now that final prices on the K4-line are posted, for factory-built

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Pricing Posted

2020-10-03 Thread Wes
IIRC the price for a base K4 was always predicted to be ~$4K.  I'm on the "no
deposit" list (I think) so my dismay is the extended delivery time.  My 79th
birthday is later this month and I had hope of treating myself.  But based on my
experience of being the first kid on the block to have a K3S my time frame to
buy was one year after deliveries started.

If I simply had to have a new radio now, just to have a new radio, I would buy a
TS890.  Two things have stopped that (for now), the less then stellar NB/NR
performance and, this is going to sound anal, the lack of rear panel phone and
mic jacks.  I dislike cables dangling out of the front of a radio.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Pricing Posted

2020-10-03 Thread len
Dave,

I understand your disappointment, but in reality these little toys of
ours cost money to design and produce. Just for fun I googled the K3 and that
a posting from 2009 eluded that a loaded K3 in 2009 was $3700. In today's
money that is 4,522.73. The 1000$ plus price of the K4 line doesn't appear to
be unreasonable considering the effort that has gone into its design and new
features.

Unfortunately, in our world nothing of quality ever seems to be free.
I'm mortified every time I go in and buy a new car. I don't buy cars often,
but each time I do the prices have more than doubled. My first new car was
6,800$, then 15,000$, $30,000, and the last did not quite double rather
40,000$. (Our previous car was destroyed in a wreck and replaced sooner.) And
worst yet not one of the cars had a resale close to what we paid for it.

The bottom line here is that you have to pay to play. If you find
something that works for you be happy with the experience. In my book anything
that give you the experience is what's important.

YMMV

I hope you folks enjoy the K4 as I’m sure it will be a great radio. I will
continue to use my K3s as the price for that fine radio is dropping like crazy
and has allowed me to pick up a second one for a surprisingly low price.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Pricing Posted

2020-10-02 Thread Dave
I was disappointed to see the pricing for the K4. I thought the base K4 would
be in or around $3500 to $3700 and perhaps $500 or so to go to the K4D. As it
turns out, another $900 for the K4D. These prices do not include the ATU ($400)
or even a hand-held Mic. The total for the K4D that I was thinking of
purchasing would have been almost $5470. (+shipping ??) it’s out of my price
range. It will be interesting to see what the K4HD goes for. I’m glad that I
had my $1500 deposit refunded several months ago. I have to wonder if one will
really be able to tell the difference between any K4 and the FTDX101D which can
be purchased for under $3000 and includes the ATU and a Mic

I hope you folks enjoy the K4 as I’m sure it will be a great radio. I will

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Pricing Posted

2020-10-01 Thread Conrad PA5Y
Those prices look OK to me, it depends what happens when the EU dealers add
their mark-up/import duty.

What I REALLY want to see is the TX IMD for the 10W and 100W versions at
10/30/50 and 100% PEP. Please publish this as soon as possible.

My K3S is a great source of disappointment in this respect, especially when I
look at the superb TX quality from the transverter socket. I really hope that
the guys have paid more attention to this.

I only operate on 50MHz and above and it may well be that the 10W version with
a driver amp would be better. If the TX IMD is good enough, I will buy a K4HD.
I need the blocking performance for EU VHF contests.

[Elecraft] K4 Final Retail Pricing

2020-09-30 Thread Eric Swartz
We've just posted our final retail pricing for the K4 to the Elecraft web
page.

We worked hard to keep costs under control and the final price adjustments
reasonable with a retail increase of just $100 for the K4/10 and K4/10
versus their prior max deposits, and an increase of $300 for the K4D.

K4 Retail Prices:
K4/10 $3,599.95
K4: $4,099.95
K4D: $4,999.95
K4HD ($ still TBD after final release)

The K4 general info and order page has also been updated at:
https://elecraft.com/products/k4-transceiver

[Elecraft] K4 shipping update

2020-09-28 Thread Joseph Trombino, Jr
Howdy Gang.

OK…so it’s almost the end of September and I’m wondering if Elecraft can
provide any updated shipping info on the K4.

Or, are we looking at yet another delay.

Inquisitive minds wanting to know and all of that stuff.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 IF signal 'OUT' for external application useage

2020-09-25 Thread Edward R Cole
OK, so the only thing I do with ethernet is connect to the Internet
via a router.

So would the K4 ethernet connect via the router using a local network
to communicate with my computer? I have that option to network my
printer between multiple computers.

One related question will the ethernet permit separate IQ from main
and sub Rx (diversity mode with separate antennas)? I do that with
my K3 by using both 1st IF's to two LP-Pan which create IQ baseband
to a four-port soundcard. I have both LP-Pan phase-locked to a
single LO to preserve diversity reception. The computer runs MAP65
which takes two receiver IQ inputs.

Just curious at this point.

IQ streaming data from the K4 will be available over Ethernet.

Except that an I/Q output would also enable the convenient use of

the K4, I think that's a mistake.

As I recall, there is an HDMI output on the back of the K4.  You can
choose to have it display the front panel, the panadapter or both on
an external monitor.

You won't need to use I/Q to an LP-PAN.

Looking at the recent (though long from complete) K4 guide, I don't
see an IF OUT per se as I have in the accessory board in my K3 (or
in fact the output I/Q  from the KX3 I can run directly into my
sound card on the computer). Does the XVTR IF OUT suffice for this?

The reason I ask is that eventually my LP-PAN is going to die -
hopefully not soon but I have been using it for quite some time
now. I use the IF  out from the K3 into the LP-PAN and then into NaP3.

Now I do realize there is a panadapter on the K4 - obviously - but
I DO enjoy (in fact pretty much need) the large computer display
for the pana/spectrum display and DO use the NaP3 software controls
for K3 functions on my keyboard and mouse for tuning and such.
The display on the K4 is not the same thing I don't think. Even
with some keyboard/mouse controls native to the K4 (?) the display
size is a deterent to me as it exists. Apologies to the company. I
assume maybe there MIGHT be a video card OUT re. the K4 panadapter
at some time, but that is a maybe.. and more money.

I won't be nearly the first to get a K4.. down the line probably as
I have a K3S here and a K3 at the in-law's property. If I did get
that 'last final rig' and it was  a K4 (Iikely as I don't have much
in the shack since 2000 that was not Elecraft) I would, as an older
fellow then.. want the larger visual display of the computer/IF
out/NaP3 sort of solution.

So, do I get some IF out I can use?
tnx
