Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2M transverter

2023-12-28 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
Yes, Steve, all modes supported by the KX3 are usable on all bands, including
those using either internal or external transverters.

I am using my KX3 now primarily as the I/f for my 10GHz rig and have used it on
multiple modes including CW, SSB, FM, AM, and digital.

[Elecraft] SOLD> Elecraft KX3-2M Transverter Board Option.

2023-12-23 Thread ken057581
Sold. Thanks all! Happy Holidays...
Ken

Hello all,
I have the KX3-2M Transverter option board for sale. It's about four years old.
I don't need the board for 2m FM and putting up a large outdoor beam for SSB at
this HOA location isn't possible.
During testing, it receives and transmits fine on my attic vertical into local
repeaters.
Removed it from the KX3 while following the manual and ESD procedures.
A hard copy of the installation/operating manual is included.
Photos available.
I think Elecraft is up to $300.00 for this board!
No returns or refunds for all the standard reasons.

$185.00 shipped to CONUS only.
Shipping prices are just out of site now!
PayPal, friends/family, Zelle, Postal Money order or a cleared personal check
are all ok.
Thanks for looking,
Ken, W2GIW

Hey guys,

The transverter is sensitive enough to hear low Earth orbiting
satellites with a 3-element hand-held yagi clearly. I'd jump on it,
but I already have one.

[Elecraft] KX3 2M amp

2023-12-04 Thread Bob McGraw
I use an external VHF amp with my transverter.  Works great!   Do be
mindful of the amp switching time. The relay switching time is about 15
ms.   I prefer to use hardwire PTT as opposed to using RF detection to
switch the amp.

[Elecraft] KX3 2m module problem instable working like autoscillation

2022-10-21 Thread Aurelio via Elecraft

 hi to all
i have just installed 2m module into my KX3, it works very fine in rx but when
i go to transmit i listen noise very high into speaker e during the trasmission
the noise change e appear the hi current indication like an autoscillating of
final stage.
apparently all work, in rx position che current is about 0,300 mA when transmit
1,8 Amper but about more second late the current groven up to hi current
indication, the output is about 3,5 watt!
i didn't find the schematic of module, because i want to check the currente
bias setting.
have you an indication to solve the problem?

is it bias problem? or is ground problem?

what is the correct bias and where i can check it?

[Elecraft] KX3 2m sensitivity issues

2020-11-13 Thread Richard Penc
All:

I completed the builds of two Elecraft KX3 kits with all the bells and
whistles including 2m. I have run receive sensitivity tests using the XG3
and XG3 and XG50, and there are no appreciable differences on any of the
bands. However, the 2m Wx radio sensitivity differs by 1.5 S units between
the two, same parameters set. The preamp is on and set to 20dB on both. Any
ideas? I have gotten nothing substantive from Elecraft on this issue. I'm
wondering if it is because it is FM mode and the sig gens are CW (or square
wave). Haven't gotten on 2m yet. Any pointers would be appreciated. I'm
perplexed to say the least.

Bill,

The 2m module can ONLY use ant2 and should automatically select it as
soon as you switch to the 2m band on the KX3.

Also, this should not be confused with ANT2 which is only available if
you have a KXPA-100 connected.

[Elecraft] KX3 2m Transverter Error

2020-03-18 Thread David Thompson via Elecraft
Good evening all,

When I powered up my KX3 this evening, it displayed ERR 2M on VFO B and d=004
on VFO A. If I turn off the 2m transverter in the configuration menu, the unit
powers up without error.

I pulled the back and reseated the ribbon cable. This did not correct the
issue.

I’m looking for some guidance on troubleshooting the radio. Any input is
appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/2m driving an SG-Labs 1296Mhz transverter configuration question

2019-05-14 Thread Paul Gacek via Elecraft
Just to close this out it turns out that the incorrect setting I had was
XV2(Adr) = trn1.

Per Elecraft support I should have selected XV2(Adr) = int.trn0

The correct settings (which are different than configuring a K3) are;

XV2 (on) = Yes
XV2 (RF) = 1296
XV2 (IF) = 50
XV2 (Pwr) = 3.0
XV2 (OFS) = 0
XV2 (Adr) = int.trn0

Now works!!

Thanks to everyone that offered up suggestions.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/2m driving an SG-Labs 1296Mhz transverter configuration question

2019-05-09 Thread w4sc
Dave,

Try:

XV2 (on) = Yes
XV2 (RF) = 1296 1296 your transverter band RF freq.
XV2 (IF) = 5050 MHz for the KX3-2M option
XV2 (Pwr) = 3.0
XV2 (OFS) = 0
XV2 (Adr) = INT trn1 Selects INTERNAL transverter.

I would be interested to know how the above works for you.

Thanks but 144 does not show up as an option when I select XV2 IF. Options are
7,14,28 and 50.

Do I need to enable something else to get 144 as an option?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/2m driving an SG-Labs 1296Mhz transverter configuration question

2019-05-09 Thread Don Wilhelm

Paul,

You are telling the KX3 to use the 50 MHz output (on the BNC connector)
and not the 144 MHz output from the 2 meter option.

Change the XV2 IF parameter to 144.

The XV2 ADR parameter gives the band decode that will be sent when that
transverter is selected, and can be used to activate your 1296
transverter if you decode the band data correctly.

2019-05-09 Thread w4sc

Paul,

Try setting the XV2 (Adr) = INT trn1 if it is available in the menu.

My KX3 is stored away currently, so I can’t check it,, however The K3 works as
follows… Reference P68 of K3S manual for more detail.

• XVn ADR specifies a transverter select address. Use INT. TRN0-9 with the
K144XV (see XVn ADR description for details).

I hope the KX3-144 is implemented like the K3 in this regard, as I plan to use
mine as a uWave IF along with a PX3 also.

Anyone here have answer??

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2M module SMA connector loosening

2018-05-26 Thread Ryan Noguchi via Elecraft
Yes, there is very limited space in that area so it's difficult to tighten
that nut unless you have a very compact tool. My thinnest, smallest crescent
spanner couldn't fit (much less turn) in that space, but rather than put the
project on hold to find the right-sized tool, which in retrospect would have
been the best course of action, I used a wrench to hold the outer (fixed) nut
stationary while using the pliers to tighten the inner (free) nut. The Elecraft
tech uses only a pair of needlenose pliers in their Youtube video that
demonstrates their recommended installation procedure.

The multi-size spanner that KY5G suggested seems even larger, so likely would
be too large to fit in that space. The problem is not so much thickness, but
width. However, it is inexpensive and might be worth getting and trying. That
torque wrench he suggested is probably small enough to fit and work, with its
narrow "tuning fork" shape rather than a "crescent" shape, but at $115 is
insanely expensive for something that I may only ever use again if I install a
second transverter in my second KX3. I think what I'll do at this point is
first see if I can find a suitable tool that isn't nearly that expensive.

BTW, I am using a coax jumper to reduce torque on the connector, but my
application is pedestrian portable, not base-station or "picnic table"
portable.

I appreciate the advice and the leads. I'll have to chew on this some before
taking action.

Thanks and 73, Ryan AI6DO

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2M module SMA connector loosening

2018-05-26 Thread kstover
All,

SMA's are also supposed to be torqued to 9 lb./in.. They make break over open
end torque wrenches to do just that
They are spendy so unless your installing hundreds of the things I'd use a deep
well socket and a thin combination wrench of appropriate size.
I haven't looked at the transverter install procedure but can’t imagine trying
to get the connector tight with the radio full of "stuff".

THIS! There is no substitute for having the correct tools for the job!!

There are multi-size thin spanner wrenches made JUST for SMA and other small
connectors... Here is a link to the one that comes with my SDR-Kits DQ8SAQ
VNWA:

https://www.sdr-kits.net/Flat%20Spanner

They sell it separately. Of course, you could also buy a super expensive set
of thin spanners...

Additionally, as I study up on using my VNA, I have become more acutely aware
that connectors have make/break cycle limits. They DO wear out, especially if
you over-torque them. On PCB soldered connectors, it is a pain to replace
them, so one might consider extending the lifespan by placing a sacrificial SMA
Plug to SMA jack adapter in between the SMA jack on the radio and the
feed-line IMHO, especially on portable radios/devices that are setup and
taken down repeatedly, it is worth the additional insertion loss. Just buy
Amphenol or better quality ones and that is minimized. Here's a link to a good
one.

https://www.sdr-kits.net/sma-male-to-female

A good adapter will give you 500+ make/break cycles and still remain in spec.
Then, you just buy a new adapter rather than have to desolder and re-solder the
PCB soldered, end-firing SMA jack assuming you can find the right one.
Thus the make/break cycle on your device only increments by 1 instead of
500+.

Additionally, there IS a torque spec for SMA connectors... It's about 4 Lb-in
for a brass connector, a little higher for stainless steel. When mating
stainless steel and brass fittings together, use the lower torque figure. You
CAN get fixed torque wrenches for connectors; they are not cheap. I use my
thin spanner or a flare fitting wrench and a Lyman trigger pull scale IF/WHEN I
want an exact torque. Main deal... don't over torque a connector. I WOULD
torque the adapter to the device jack using some method of measurement system.
Then, connect the feedline with the spanner... The jack side of the adapter
will spin on the rubber seal before reaching 4LB-in built-in over-torque
protection.

Here's an example of an SMA torque wrench a very reasonably priced one all
things considered:

I agree with Mike,

Because of Arrow-induced self-flagellation, I'm using a SMA to BNC cable when I
do satellite work, with the adapter cable secured with a little homemade clamp

Ryan,
Another option is to use a short length of coax, sma male to sma female, to
avoid the issue of something torquing the SMA jack on the KX3 loose.
Something like this?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2M module SMA connector loosening

2018-05-26 Thread Mike Parkes
Ryan,
Another option is to use a short length of coax, sma male to sma female, to
avoid the issue of something torquing the SMA jack on the KX3 loose.
Something like this?

Ryan,
I experienced the same issue on my kx3 also. I was able to tighten it down
enough with a wrench to keep it snug so far, but still keep an eye on it. I
also thought abt locktite but didn't like the idea of introducing non
conductive material between the case and the jack.

[Elecraft] KX3 2M module SMA connector loosening

2018-05-26 Thread Ryan Noguchi via Elecraft
I recently bought and installed the KX3-2M transverter module in one of my KX3s
and am enjoying a much better experience receiving the downlink from the Mode B
AMSAT birds, compared to the TH-F6A I was using previously. Sensitivity and
ergonomics are a huge improvement.
Unfortunately, I find that the SMA connector loosens very quickly. I've already
had to open the case and almost completely uninstall the transverter once
(undoing and redoing everything except the internal coax connections) just to
retighten the nut, and it's already worked itself loose again. Does anyone have
a trick they used to keep the nut from loosening? I can't get a lot of leverage
with needlenose pliers with such a skinny nut in such close proximity to
fragile components, and the thin lockwasher doesn't seem to be very effective.
I thought I had cranked it down pretty tight, but apparently not tight enough.
I seems that it would have been better to have the separate nut on the outside
end of the connector (like the connectors on the PX3), since those can be
tightened up very easily from the outside.
One option might be to use Blue Loctite. I don't think I'd ever need to remove
it unless Elecraft comes up with a dual-band (2M and 70CM) internal transverter
to replace it, but this option would likely be  permanent since I don't think I
could get enough mechanical leverage to break the Loctite and don't think
heating up the connector to loosen the Loctite would be a good idea.
Any better ideas?

[Elecraft] KX3 + 2m transverter + JT65

2018-03-09 Thread phil

Hi Everyone,

I've just joined the list to ask a quick question - Is there anyone here
who has actually tried 2m JT65 using a KX3 with the 2m transverter module?

I understand that due to the KX3 temperature compensation system
correcting drift in steps, that JT56 may not work on 2m, although I've
been unable to find any reference to someone having actually just tried
it to see if it works.

And if it doesn't work, if there are any workarounds - e.g. would
operating the radio with the case open and a fan cooling the RF board
help the situation?

I'm keen to have a go at EME and apart from this issue have everything I
need sorted out, so I'm hoping this issue isn't going to be a deal-breaker.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3-2M SMA connector issue

2017-12-03 Thread Mike Parkes
James,
I ended up pulling out the 2 meter board and the tuner board (that was
about all it takes to get back to the SMA connector) and really tightened
the inside screw down a lot more torque than I did the first time. I think
I was over cautious when I first assembled the SMA connector. Sure didn't
want to start gouging out the opening in the case! So it has been fine
since then, however I have been a little more carful when moving the KX3
around with the sma right angle and the whip 2m/440 antenna. I think having
a right angle connector there is a little futzy. I have used the radio like
a handheld and just attached the whip antenna to the sma direct (wo the
right angle adapter) and that works fine. It is actually fun! The heaviest
biggest 2 meter ht I ever used since my first HT a Motorola brick lol/
Kinda makes me wish I had gone with the KX2 as It has a built in Mic which
is cool. But I love my KX3. I did design a little attachment that bolts to
the case and that works, but it is rinky dink. but it does make sure the
antenna is supported up from the base so that there is no way it can flop
over then. I will send a pic of that to you and the group if anyone wants
to see it.
Sri it took me a while to get back to you! I need to get my list
subscription back to individual emails, have not been able to keep up with
replies as easy when it is digest form. So Thank You! To anyone else who
replied on this issue (which isn't really an issue just a matter of making
sure the SMA connector is mounted securely).

I did notice that as I tightened it down snug that there was no evidence
that the outside flange (the flange/nut that Elecraft somehow made sure
would turn around the threads, don't ask me how they did that!) Anyway it
seems that the lock washers bite in pretty well and prevents the connector
from turning in the opening. The other option is to look for a beefier lock
washer... not sure if one of those split ring type lock washers would give
more tension? Anyway... I am shopping for some kind of external 2 meter
antenna now, so probably won't be using the whip antenna that much
eventually. Could make a j-pole. I am below ground here so it is a
challenge to get a good signal out on 2 meters. Anyway. thanks again.
probably told you way more than you wanted to read hihi.

73 Merry Christmas to you James~! hope you have a great holiday season. I
plan on Santa bringing me all kinds of ham test equipment. Signal
Generator, Freq counters antennas analyzers you name it.

Just installed in the 2M module in my KX3. I’m on the latest firmware rev.
Gone over the setup instructions several times, and the parameters are all set

When I go to the 2M band, the display comes up 122.000.00 ?

Anyone have an idea?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2M External amp -- go linear!

2016-07-30 Thread Edward R Cole

Joel and all:

The 80w amplifier I build is the Klitzing amp described, below.

I purchase the unpopulated pc board from Jim and order all other
components. I install them in Hammond enclosure with same heat sink
Jim recommends, plus a 120mm square fan controlled by a
thermistor-based ckt. I also add a bar meter which indicates
relative output. I also use the ALC kit from Jim to sample RF power
for the meter.

It runs with 8amp quiescent current at near class-A operation so very
linear in output. No preamp is included but the TR relay allows
bypass in OFF so you do not need to disconnect the amp if not
needed. I agree with Joel that there are better preamps than
typically embedded in most ham VHF amps.

I handle PayPal sales for the popular WA2ODO preamps (6m-13cm).

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2m external amplifier

2016-07-29 Thread Jim Brown

That would be great, Mel.

I think I probably have about 8 brick amps of this generation carrying
the Mirage and RF Concepts nameplate. Up to now, I've never looked at
their spectral performance, and I don't have an easy way to do so with
the frequency resolution of the P3, because I have only one 2M CW
transceiver. OTOH, I could probably borrow a second one from W6GJB.

The most practical test I currently know of for IM performance is
transmitting CW dits in the range of 35WPM and looking at the occupied
bandwidth on a P3 with a display bandwidth on the order of 10 kHz.

CW is 100% modulation of a carrier by a rectangular wave, so the
harmonics associated with rise and fall times create at least as much
distortion as SSB. That distortion shows up in the form of clicky
sidebands. It's quite easy to see these sidebands on a P3. Here's some
work I did a year or two ago measuring some rigs that were available
to me.

Several years ago, we searched for and acquired vintage (30 year old) brick
amps that drive with either 2W or 10W for an output of about 150W.
They have built-in preamps. These vintage amps were made during the 70s and
80s with the Mirage and RF Concepts name, and were built in Northern
California. They also made versions of these amps that required higher drive
levels -- 30W and 50W, I think, and they also made versions for
440 MHz. I own some of those too, which I use with the FM rig in my shack.
The Mirage name was later bought by MFJ. We found four of these vintage amps
in good condition in a few days simply by asking on two local club
reflectors. I don't remember what we paid, but I do know that we considered
them a bargain. :)

Those older amps are a great fit to an Elecraft rig with an Elecraft
transverter. We use the version that drives with 2W so that we can run the
transverter at the lowest possible power, thus reducing heat.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2M External amp -- go linear!

2016-07-29 Thread Joel Hallas
While there are many amplifiers that can be pressed into service for SSB use
on 2 meters, most are really not designed for linear SSB use and have a high
level of IMD products if used for SSB. I spent a fair amount of effort
during my tenure at ARRL looking for an exception. While in general
operation in many areas, 2 meter IMD products will not likely be noticed by
casual operators due to the sparse number of operators on the band, in
contests -- when we find most 2 meter SSB and CW activity in my area -- it
is a different matter.

The usual brick amplifier probably has a switch that says FM/SSB, but a look
behind the covers will indicate that this only changes the TR switching
time. Most have no bias arrangements and no hope to be close to linear. If
similar They would be run off the HF bands in minutes.

If you have access to QST, or are a member and can look at the archives on
line, I recommend reading the following product reviews with a close look at
IMD figures:

Aug 2010 - QST (Pg. 52)
A Pair of Mirage 2 Meter Amplifiers

Jan 2012 - QST (Pg. 54)
TE Systems 1410G 2 Meter Linear Amplifier

May 2012 - QST (Pg. 48)
Tokyo Hy-Power Labs HL-350VDX 2 Meter Linear Amplifier

The last amplifier worked really well in this regard and was a real gem.
Unfortunately, it was very expensive and the company is no longer in biz.

As to the preamps, the internal Elecraft transverters have a better noise
figure than the preamp in any brick amp that I have looked at. That means
that they are not particularly useful unless you have them mounted remotely
at the antenna and have a lossy coax run.

My solution was inspired by an excellent QST article by Jim Klitzing, W6PQL:

Oct 2012 - QST (Pg. 32)
Solid State 1 kW Linear Amplifier for 2 Meters

Jim described an amplifier that was built around a linear amplifier module
that did all the heavy lifting. The rest of the amplifier was still more of
a project than I wanted to tackle, although I think it would work with the
transverters.

I convinced Jim to design and build an amplifier that would make my K3
competitive with the typical 100 W HF-VHF transceivers. With my great
receiver and 10 W transmitter, I was hearing people and they weren't hearing
me. By staying at the 100 W level, I could use the same power supply that my
K3 used for HF. I have been using the amplifier for years and been very
happy with it. It is very linear up to 80 W PEP out on SSB, but happy to do
CW and FM at 100 W. See the article at:

May 2013 -- QST (p. 30)
Build a Linear 2 Meter 80 W All Mode Amplifier

Jim offers PC boards, unpopulated, as well as largely complete, for
reasonable prices via his web page at w6pql.com. This amplifier is the size
of a brick, probably costs less and is a much better product, in my view. I
recommend it without reservation.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2m external amplifier

2016-07-28 Thread Edward R Cole
Thanks to Mike and Bill for buying my 2M80 amps (assembled or partial
kit). I built twelve amps so far and most were to be driven by KX3's
with 2M module. I set nearly all amps to be driven by 1.5-2.0w so
the KX3-2M would not have to run full power. The 80w RF module that
is used is not in production so now limited quantities available
(from RFParts). I have identified a replacement power module which
should run 60-70w.

But there are quite few surplus 2m linear amps available. Mirage, TE
Systems, and RFConcepts. I have a RFC 2-23 linear which runs 2w/30w
and RFC 3-17 linear which runs 40w/170w. I have three 2m sources: an
old FT736R (30w), DEMI 28-144 HP (50w) and the KX3-2M which not up to
stuff running only 1.5w. I use either the RFC 2-23 or a surplus MOT
amp that runs 1w/60w (FM) with my KX3-2M.

I am not taking orders for a couple months as I am working on some of
my own projects while summer wx is still here:
6m 1kW amp and possibly building a new 18x26 foot ham shack which
will require running all new cables to my four towers and dish. Take
a look at the amps here: http://www.kl7uw.com/kits.htm

You can call the owner and talk to him yourself and make your own
determination on where they're made. He has his name, address, and email
address right there - email and ask for his phone number. I know quite a
few people (including myself) that have purchased several of those power
supplies direct from him and have not had any problem with RFI. I have
also purchased one of the chinese versions that look the same and threw it
out almost immediately because it was so bad. If you bought one direct
from him that was noisy, I'd call him up and send it back for him to
replace to test out his advertised 2 year warranty.

Really would be nice to have a SMPS that was quiet, modular, and able to

2016-07-28 Thread Jim Brown
On the recommendation of someone on this list, about a year ago I bought
one of the 350-12 units. It came with no documentation, and no
certification of compliance with anything. It is VERY NOISY, and nothing
I have tried has been able to make a dent in the noise. Multiple chokes
on AC, multiple chokes on DC, and bypass caps on both AC and DC. It's
currently sitting on the shelf in my store room.

I have a 2M amp about 80 watts from Edward R Cole, KL6UW. I
drive it with my 5W HT. It seems to work well, although I just
got it working a month or so ago and have been away most of the
time since. Note that Ed will set it up for the drive level you need.

Pluses: Solidly built. Automatic T/R switching, or by control wire.

Minuses: Little/no protective circuity. Class A so it draws a
lot of power with no input.

I built mine as a kit and it was a fun build. Since I was an
early adopter, I asked Ed a lot of questions and got very useful
support throughout the process.

I've been very happy with a vintage RF Concepts 2-417. It's rated for 170W

TH-F6A 5W HT. I never measured the output with that drive, but it was
clearly considerable. Also, the preamp is quite good. These are readily
available used, best guess is price around $175-250 for one in good condx.

I've used mine with the Mirage B-320-G quite a lot. It works great, both
FM and SSB with no issues. I've also used it with a little Tokyo Hi-Power
35 watt amp and had no issues, either. There really isn't anything
complicated about getting the KX3 2m going with any amplifier - just make
sure the one you choose will deliver the power you're looking for with 3
watts or less input.

My neighbor W6GJB and I both have K3s with Elecraft 2m transverters. His
is internal, mine is external (I've owned it for more than ten years).
Several years ago, we searched for and acquired vintage (30 year old)

They have built-in preamps. These vintage amps were made during the 70s

California. They also made versions of these amps that required higher
drive levels -- 30W and 50W, I think, and they also made versions for

Those older amps are a great fit to an Elecraft rig with an Elecraft

Thanks Bruce: If that capacitor is no longer an issue we don’t want to be
asking builders to look for it, Hi!

I’ll look into the TO-220 issue. As long as it’s tightly clamped by the screw,
it should provide good heat transfer to the case.

Yes, sorry, C180, not C120. Not that I'm complaining, its absence made assembly
easier.

Re: TO-220. If you look at Fig 24 (bottom of p28) in the instructions, you'll
see TO-220 "leaning back" inwards from the side of the case, loosely held by
the nylon screw. My TO-220 looked like that before I inserted the module -- so
far so good.

When I inserted the module, the transistor heat sink went into the gap between
the top of TO-220 and the case. I wiggled it a bit until the hole in the heat
sink, and the top hole of TO-220 approximately lined up. I was able to screw in
the metal Phillips screw fine, so the heat sink should have a good connection
to the case. But TO-220 was still "leaning back", meaning that the bottom hole
of TO-220 was still at an angle. I tried unscrewing both screws, but the
heatsink had wedged TO-220 firmly at that angle.

Bruce

Hi Bruce:

Are talking about C180 near J4? I'll check into it. It won't be the first
time the engineers made a change and didn't realize it impacted the assembly
instructions (I'm 600 miles from Watsonville, but only milliseconds by voice
and e-mail. Still that can be "light years" at times, Hi!)

I'm not sure what could put the TO-220 screw at an angle. The TO-220 heat
sink simply slips in between the retainer, which is then pulled tightly
against the TO-220 heat sink and the side of the case. That's the critical
part - good mechanical and thermal contact between the TO-220 heat sink and
the side of the case.

Have you tried loosening both screws and then re-tightening them? What comes
to mind is that in tightening the top screw, the retainer might have turned
slightly, misaligning the bottom screw in the hole. With everything in
place. Loosen both screws a bit, then retighten the bottom (nylon) screw to
hold the retainer, then tighten the top screw and see if things line up
better.

I'd appreciate hearing if that works either at my address on this message or
r...@elecraft.com.

Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 2m Install

Hi folks,

Last night I installed and configured a KX3 2m module following the current
instructions on the website (Rev C). My KX3 is a recent factory build.
Everything seems to be working fine; I haven't actually tried it on-air yet
(need to finish my 2m Moxon), but at least I didn't blow my rig up.

I encountered one difference with the instructions: When installing the LO
coax on J4, I could not find any capacitor C120 to avoid. My KX3 simply
doesn't have C120 or R81 on that PCB. Has something changed in recent KX3s?

The only hard part was the final installation, specifically clamping the
heatsink lug properly with retainer TO-220. It seems like the clamping
arrangement unavoidably puts the nylon bottom screw at a weird angle. I
double-checked the orientation of TO-220 and redid these steps over several
times, and couldn't figure out any other way to make it work. Is this right?
If so, a clarification in the instructions would help.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2m Install

2016-04-25 Thread Bruce Nourish
Yes, sorry, C180, not C120. Not that I'm complaining, its absence made
assembly easier.

Re: TO-220. If you look at Fig 24 (bottom of p28) in the instructions,
you'll see TO-220 "leaning back" inwards from the side of the case, loosely
held by the nylon screw. My TO-220 looked like that before I inserted the
module -- so far so good.

When I inserted the module, the transistor heat sink went into the gap
between the top of TO-220 and the case. I wiggled it a bit until the hole
in the heat sink, and the top hole of TO-220 approximately lined up. I was
able to screw in the metal Phillips screw fine, so the heat sink should
have a good connection to the case. But TO-220 was still "leaning back",
meaning that the bottom hole of TO-220 was still at an angle. I tried
unscrewing both screws, but the heatsink had wedged TO-220 firmly at that
angle.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2m Install

2016-04-25 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire

The only hard part was the final installation, specifically clamping the

[Elecraft] KX3 2M Overheating

2016-02-23 Thread n1ko
Hi All,

I haven't used my KX3 2M option in a while, but just turned it on to work
some local FM repeaters and I'm having an issue with it overheating very
rapidly and cutting out. I worked some HF over the weekend with no issues.
The SWR indication is normal, and the issue occurs with multiple 2M
antennas, and in both FM, SSB and "tune" mode, and the 2M PA seems to
overheat and cut out rapidly even when I turn the transmit power down to
0.1W.

Any ideas? This symptom seems ominous.

Tnx,

Adam, N1KO

2015-07-04 Thread Jack F6AJW
Great! It works! Thank you Fred for valuable info! Thank also to Mat for
advise (usable on BNC out for lower frequencies like IF on 28 or 50 MHz) .

So, I will be QRV this afternoon (despite heat wave: 35°C!) on 10 GHz
with my KX3 as 2m IF (better than my usual FT-817ND on RX).

Maybe... Use a bias T with the DC feeding torwards the transverters?
The ACC2 keyline (p5, Owner's Manual) is pulled low during transmit and
could be used to activate a FET or bipolar switch to 12VDC.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3][2M] Assembly Advice - Going Nuts!

2014-12-21 Thread Steve
Hot melt glue might be more forgiving (glue on the threads) or double
sided tape with a punched hole for the screw.
When I built Heath Kits and "real work" I would use tape on my finger so
that I could hold the nuts in place while I attached the screw...

the TO220 device tab is secured by the screw, the adhesive no longer serves any

[Elecraft] KX3-2M low power output in SSB mode -- fixed

2014-11-24 Thread Wayne Burdick
I believe I have this fixed. Drive power was internally limited and scaled in a
way that affected only SSB mode, especially with speech compression turned on.
If you've noticed lower power output on the 2-meter module in SSB mode than in
CW or FM modes, and would like to try the revised firmware, please email me
directly.

I have several other KX3 firmware changes to make, e.g. improving high-speed CW
keying on 2 meters. These will have to wait until after the Thanksgiving
holiday.

Wayne

Re: [Elecraft] KX3-2m CW problem

2014-11-23 Thread Jack F6AJW

Good evening /bonsoir Paul, Olli, Wayne and All,

Thank you for your comments. Here, output power is the same using
internal batteries or external 13.8V in FM or SSB; here, I can perform
precise power measurements up to 24 GHz. Thanks in anticipation, Wayne,
for power improvement to come May be that a future software release
will manage to also improve rejection of birdies too. For the moment, I
have just tried with an external antenna 3 elements Yagi antenna located
a few meters from KX3 and it was the same situation regarding internal
birdies. Interesting to know what is the behaviour of 4m module compared
to the 2m one?

Sorry Paul, no answer to your problem with CW (not yet tried).
On my side, I am a bit disappointed with my KX3-2m because of low TX
output (2W instead of 3 announced) and lot of birdies on dummy load in
RX mode. When using an external antenna, noise level increases and some
birdies disappear but not all especially on 144.400 MHz. Do not try to
connect an antenna (flexible quarter wave in my case) directly on SMA
socket, you will receive a lot of birdies so, no way to use my KX3-2m
like I used to do at the end of 70's with my IC-202 transceiver and
telescopic antenna.

Any way to cure my problems?

QRQ CW sounds very dirty.

CW on HF bands is perfect.

It seems there may be some sort of timing issue in the firmware; I guess this will get
added somewhere on the "to-do" list.

[Elecraft] KX3-2M power out problem & birdies (was: Re: KX3-2m CW problem)

2014-11-22 Thread Oliver Dröse

Hi Jack,

Elecraft is aware of the power out problem, we reported it already a few
weeks ago. My personal KX3-2M is only putting out 2 watts on SSB, too
(like yours), while the one of a friend of mine even only 1.5 watts (all
measured on a calibrated PEP meter). Both units put out the full 3 watts
on CW & FM. The low SSB power out is reflected on the KX3's internal
meter, too. It seems there are units that have the problem and some that
don't.

Wayne's supposed to work on the problem and it should be fixable by
firmware, that's the last response I had from him 2 weeks ago (after we
had done a few other checks the weeks before). Eagerly waiting for new
beta software to try the fix overhere ...

Concerning the birdies: Yes, there are a few. With a real antenna
connected there are only 3 or 4 left that are audible stronger than s1
in the 144.0 to 144.5 MHz range, non of them stronger than s3. Yes, it
would be great to have no birdies at all in the weak signal band but to
be honest I do not know of any transceiver of the last 20 years (and
I've tried a few) that has no birdies at all. We certainly have to
accept a few compromises when putting so much technique into such a
small package.

Haven't tried connecting just a whip directly to the KX3 yet, always had
a yagi connected as with the small power out you need every bit of
antenna gain you can get anyway to make QSOs. ;-) Have you tried using a
smal HB9CV or 2L yagi a few meters away? Still too many birdies then?

[Elecraft] KX3 2M,, KX3

2014-11-19 Thread riese-k3djc

Just a quick report on the 2 meter option at my QTH
my antennas are 150 Ft away from many hospital pagers
at 150 Mhz which cause issues on all the FM gear I have
so I expected the worse
but
using a simple stub I am able to eliminate any interference from the
pagers
the stub is tunable and will notch any problems
the receiver sounds and works as well as my DEM station and takes up a
lot less space
really amazing
the only issue was not seeing any output on the KX3 RF bridge,,,
an nice enhancement would be to make the RF/SWR metering
a bit more sensitive on 144
many thanks to Howard K6IA elecraft support for helping my bone headiness
I have a DEM 144 transceiver and a kenwood TS 850 up for sale

Yes. We use the LO*4 signal from the synthesizer to drive the 2-meter module's
down-conversion mixer, and the math for this puts the I.F. at 48 MHz when R.F.
is 144 MHz. If not for this fortunate result, adding 2 meters to the KX3 would
require a separate, high-stability TCXO running at around 190 MHz. A lot more
expensive.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3][2M] Over heat question

2014-09-16 Thread Chris Johnson
OK Good to know. I could not get all the way through a single radiogram on
Olivia 1000/32 with an average transmit time of 2.5 minutes without it shutting
down a hair after 2 minutes in. I just installed all the SideKick panels and
Fred's heatsink on my newest KX3 and will retry tonight.

Is there a reason why you chose 50mhz instead of 28mhz for the IF? The KX3 is
very inefficient on 6M it seems.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2M Module

2014-09-16 Thread Edward R Cole

Kevin,

On some of the early 2M models the printing on the metal shield was
backwards to that shown in the manual. I made the mistake of
installing my shield per the photo in the manual and got the shield
on backwards which partially shorted the output transistor resulting
in low RF output (0.3w vs 3.0w). I was one of the field testers so
my unit was very early production. MY understanding is that the
label issue was remedied in later units.

To be absolutely sure the shield is on correctly you should visually
examine the shield to see if the tiny cutout is over the output
transistor (this is the one with a tab you secured with a black
flat-head screw). You should be able to check it without removal of
the shield. Another way to describe it is the cutout is along the
side of the shield nearest the edge of the radio case.

The manual was updated on this if I am not mistaken (Ron?).

"NOT receiving" is something to call tech support on. If it
transmits OK, this would indicate to me a problem in the 2M unit.

My receiver lost sensitivity in field testing and was
repaired. Elecraft added a mod to provide more protection to the
receiver input ckts (which I believe is a permanent mod on later
production units). I run 1400w on 2m for eme on a tower only
130-feet away from the antennas I use with my KX3, so this puts my
KX3-2M in an extreme RF environment. I unplug the KX3 antenna when
running eme, now.

Incidentally, the label on the shield was affixed 180 degrees to the
illustration in the instruction manual. I caught that before powering
the rig.
