Thanks for the kind words.
I accept the nomination, but it's far more important to me to be part of the
team than to actually be reelected again.

Alex

Thanks for the reply Jeff,

Would I be better off at this stage to get something like the Mesa M5i20 card
and
learn to use that? It seems like it has a lot more capibility... My first
attempt most
likely will be with a couple of steppers or some used servos. BTW, I'm building
a
portable plasma table. I'm not too concerened with proper speeds yet just
figuring
out the parts of the puzzle so to speak.

Thanks

Re: [Emc-users] CNC4PC C10 Breakout Board

2007-07-25 Thread Ray Henry

Hi John

A board like you are looking at will certainly get you started with step
and direction. It can also allow you to test HAL things by connecting
switches to pins and see them work. Back in the old days we used to cut
apart parport cables and wire these in but you can't do that today with
Gecko drives and 3 volt mobos. There are many stepper driven minimills
out there running with these kinds of interface cards. The down side is
that you are pretty much limited to steppers and a few IO. You're also
limited to 3-5 volt -- a pretty big limit for an old guy like me.

The alternative you mention, a card like the M5i20 does offer many more
pins and a wider variety of function. Using one of these requires a bit
bigger step up to understand all the extra stuff you'll see in the HAL.
If you plan to experiment with servo systems, any thing beyond the open
loop, step-and-direction signalled sort like Rutex or Gecko, you'll need
the ability to read in encoder signals at fairly high speed. In
addition, the IO breakouts for this card or similar permit the use of
higher DC voltages. This is a plus if you use prox switches and
industrial grade relays.

I think half of the people I show emc to don't believe it can do what it

[Emc-users] Board Seats

2007-07-25 Thread Gene Heskett
Greetings;

I've no idea if my input as a hobbyist user is wanted, but from the list of
nominees so far, I've been very impressed with their patience with this old
fart, and their knowledge, both on the list and on IRC.

So the questions I have are, how many 'chairs' are there around this table?

And how many of them are now filled with highly qualified nominees?

In other words I assume someone is keeping a list all on one page...

Everyone receiving either of these two mailing lists is eligible to
nominate and vote on board members. I saved off a list of email
addresses when I made the announcement and that will be the list of
people who get ballots.

You can use a PID on the spindle speed. Connect the PID command input
to motion.spindle-speed-out, tune PID. The only trouble will be if you
need a speed that can't be reached in the present gear. Ideally, you'd
have an input or two that tell EMC what gear it's in, and you can use a
comparator block to check whether the requested speed can be reached in
the current gear (and pop up a dialog telling the user to change gears
if not). That's not a trivial setup though.

You can use a limit block for this, if tuning the PID doesn't do it for you.

When I first read this, I thought you would need feedback to do CSS
(Constant Surface Speed), but I guess that is not true. You would only
need feedback in situations where the commanded speed and the actual
speed could be far enough apart to be considered out of tolerance, or if
you needed to position the spindle for milling operations. I wonder if a
VFD could be used for positioning? I am guessing that if the spindle
speed varies more than a handful of percent from the commanded speed,
the motor will stall. I would be interested in hearing anyone's
experience with this.

I am planning on using the Hardinge HNC codes M03 - Low Clutch and Motor
Forward, M04 - Low Clutch and Motor Reverse and M43 - Low Clutch and
Motor Forward, M44 - Low Clutch and Motor Reverse. Although, for the
short term (probably forever) I will use one of the M62-5 or M100-199
codes. I am happier keeping it simple and commanding the (motor) speed
and gear, and then, taking the active gear ratio into consideration in
the programming.

[Emc-users] Jog Wheel Information

A while back, there was allot of good information floating around
concerning jog wheels. Now that I _actually_ want to install one, the
information doesn't seem to be handy. I wonder if it would be
appropriate to have a short information, vendor and resource list on the

resource for encoders would be good too.)

Heh. I like that one :)

The board is distinct from the developers. The board is there to make
decisions that affect the direction of development (do we deviate from
the RS274NGC spec, do we add features for 23-axis machines ...),
decisions about things like distribution and websites, that sort of
thing. Also, when situations arise that concern things like potential
GPL violations or other licensing issues, the board is there as an
authoritative body to communicate with outside parties.

In essence, the board is mostly uninvolved with day-to-day development,
as I see it.

You must be missing some build dependencies. apt-get build-dep emc2
will help you if you're running ubuntu, otherwise carefully check
the output of configure and install packages accordingly.

I bet they aren't being compiled. Halscope and Halmeter need GTK
version 2.4.0 or later. If the appropriate GTK development packages
aren't installed, any programs that use GTK won't be built.

Re-run configure, and examine the output closely... on my system there
is a line like this:

"checking for GTK 2.4.0 or above... yes - 2.8.20"

I bet you have a message that says

"checking for GTK 2.4.0 or above... no - some programs will not be built"

or something like that.

To fix that, install the GTK 2.4 or later development packages on your
system and re-run configure. For a Dapper system that probably means

"apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev"

The reason we don't simply have configure stop and report an error is
that halmeter and halscope are considered "optional" programs - they are
tools that you use to tweak EMC, not critical parts of EMC itself.

I was thinking of having the input to the integrator being based on the
error between the command rpm and the feedback rpm.
Example
M3 S800
given an aceleration rate of 500 rpm per second
Time zero, Input to integrator equals 800rpm(command) - 0rpm(feedback) =
800, limited to 500rpm/sec.
Time 1 second, Input to integrator equals 800rpm - 500rpm(spindle speed
after 1 second) = 300rpm/sec into integrator.
Time 2 seconds, Input to integrator equals 800rpm - 800rpm(spindle
speed) = 0 input into integrator.
S400
Deceletation limited to 300rpm/sec.
Time 3 seconds, Input to integrator = 400rpm - 800rpm = -400rpm limited
to -300rpm
Time 4 seconds, Input to integrator = 400rpm - 500rpm = -100rpm...
Time 5 seconds, Input to Integrator = 400rpm -400rpm = 0 output to
integrator.
This way the input to the integrator is limited to keep its command from
acelerating or decelerationg.

Perhaps limit2 could do this better?

Thanks again!

You don't want in integrator. It won't stop when it reached the desired
speed, it just keeps going.

However, we do have a block that does exactly what you need: limit2
The output of a limit2 block tracks its input, while obeying minimum
and maximum value limits and a rate-of-change limit.

> Other thought is to use the multiplexer and select a gear ratio that
> would best fit the desired SFM.

I'd probably use a pair of scale blocks to convert the commanded spindle
speed into motor speeds for each gear, followed by a pair of limit2
blocks to enforce ramp rates (can be different for each gear), and then
going into a mux that selects one or the other depending on the gear you
are in.

I probably don't need closed loop spindle speed control, I just thought
since I have the encoder, and two unused axis available, why not! After
spending some time reading the hal documentation tonight I got an idea
that might work. What if I used HAL's integrator with commanded_speed -
feedback_speed_IN with limits of something like 500rpm/sec acel and
300rpm/sec decel. I think that would command my spindle drive to
accelerate at 500rpm per second until it reached the commanded rpm and
decelerate at 300rpm/sec until it reached the lowered commanded rpm.
Any thoughts? Would this work?

Other thought is to use the multiplexer and select a gear ratio that
would best fit the desired SFM.

Thanks!

[Emc-users] Fine tuning

2007-07-25 Thread Jason Cox
Hi all,
I have rebuilt my DIY 2.5D Mill on Ubuntu 6.06 EMC and have a few
questions based upon the latest apt-get package,

1. Is the backlash feed rate set to the same acceleration curves as
normal moves, or do I need to upgrade to the latest CVS ?

2. How do I setup the max velocity on a per axis basis ( my Z move can
only handle 100mm / min others aprox 200mm /min) ?

Thanks

If you are running Ubuntu, click on System->Preferences->Screensaver
That should let you select any screensaver, including none. If you
aren't using Ubuntu, I don't know, but its probably not to dramatically
different from that.

No doubt. But that does seem to be a pretty small table considering the
number of very talented folks available. It would seem to be a shame to bump
someone to make room for other, also highly qualified folks.

Since emc's popularity seems to be growing all the time, being able to include
other talented people on the board would seem to be a worthwhile way of
saying thanks to all of them.

Of course theres always that old saw about the error while compiling
committee.c, too many arguments to function. :)

Are you sure you really need to close the speed loop? Or would it be
sufficient to simply send the appropriate command to the VFD?
"Appropriate" means that it has been corrected for the gear ratio for
whatever gear you are in at the moment.

If you can mount a switch to your machine that is actuated in one gear
(ideal), or if you are willing to click a GUI button to tell the system
what gear you are in, its not that difficult in HAL to generate two
speed commands, one for each gear, and route the appropriate one to the
DAC and then to the VFD.

That's what we do for the Mazak at the CNC workshop, but we went one
step farther there - we have classicladder logic that actually does the
gear change sequence. The Mazak has hydraulics to shift the gears, and
prox switches to tell what position the shifter is in. The HAL/Ladder
config we have automatically slows the motor to 15 RPM, then shifts to
neutral, shifts into the new gear, and accels to the final speed.

John Kasunich

Re: [Emc-users] M1xx code and PLC

2007-07-25 Thread Manfredi Leto

Hi,

In EMC2 M1XX codes are simply "programs". Executable programs. So, they
could be bash scripts, compiled C programs, a Python scripts...whatever can
be executed.

When the interpreter finds a M1XX in the part-program, it simply executes
the program/script with that name, after that, it continues to read and
execute the g-code commands.

Example:

Imagine you have a relais in your CNC system and you want to activate it
using a new M-code, say for example M101. And turning it off using another
code, for example M102.

Consider you have this relais commanded by PIN 8 of the parallel port.
So, we are going to create two scripts, one named "M101" and other named
"M102". You MUST place those scripts in the directory indicated in your .ini
file as PROGRAM_PREFIX (in the [DISPLAY] section), those scripts MUST be
executable, so don't forget to add the permission.

The first script (M101) will be like that:

#! /bin/bash
halcmd setp parport.0.pin-08-out 1

And the second (M102) will be like that:

#! /bin/bash
halcmd setp parport.0.pin-08-out 2

Save and try (make sure you don't have any signal hooked to pin 08). Looking
with halmeter at pin 08 you will see it change from TRUE to FALSE using M101
or M102 in the MDI command line.

This is the simplest use you can imagine, but you can do very complex thing.
First you can execute an entire and complex HAL file instead of a single
command always using a simple bash script and you can easily interact with a
PLC if that is what you need. Second, you can make a complex program also in
C or in any programming language you want, and EMC2 will run that program
when the interpreter encounter the code, the G-code placed after that will
be executed only when the program is terminated.

I hope this helps. I've tested it and works, so I'm sure it can be done. If
you have still difficults, please feel free to contact me again.

Manfredi

[Emc-users] Lathe Spindle Speed Control?

2007-07-25 Thread RogerN
I have my VFD forward and reverse connected to the M5i20 through the
7i37 board, M3 & M4 works as they should.

Now I need to connect the spindle speed control. The basic idea is to
get the spindle speed command to the M5i20 dac 3. Since I have
different gears, I would like to use my spindle encoder feedback and
either increase or decrease the command to get the programmed speed.

Also, my drive will handle about 300-400 rpm per second deceleration
without dynamic braking. Are there trajectory settings for spindle
speed?

Humm, somehow that sounds like the install emc .iso, Dennis. To be written as
a raw write to a cdrom, booted and used as the installer.

The Handbook is IIRC, a .pdf file, and slightly out of date so use the wiki as
the latest word in case of unresolved questions.
