[Emc-users] Gdepth

2008-01-17 Thread fox fox

Hello,

I tried to use the utility Gdepth downloaded from this page:

http://axis.unpythonic.net/01169521961

It worked nice withe the 2.1.6 version of EMC2 (installed).
Now I tried it with the 2.2.2 and I get this error:

spiral.ngc:0: Bad character 'g' used

this is the original spiral.ngc file from the EMC2 examples.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Manfredi

Thanks a lot, Steve!

 Hi Martin.

At the very bottom of the wiki front page, is this line:

If you want to add information to this page or add a new page, follow
some BasicSteps., and BasicSteps is a link to this wiki page:
 http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?BasicSteps

You should be able to post after following those instructions. If
anything isn't clear, or you think that link should be more obvious,
feel free to change it :)

[Emc-users] Ball screws

2008-01-17 Thread Witek GB
I want to add an EMC CNC controller to my bridgeport clone however, before I
start, I was thinking of retrofitting and installing ball screws. I think I
have too much backlash in what I have now. I have a taiwanese 10 x 50
bridgeport cone with a M cast into the main casting. So who sells zero
backlash ball scres that are atleast as accruate as +/- 0.0005/Ft and how
much would the setup cost me if I wanted to put it on my mill?

Thanks

I am doing a 42 x 9 table Bridgeport conversion now. The Hiwin rolled
ballscrews I ordered for it were just under $700, has .002 backlash and
is rated at .002 error per foot (Ground, .0005 error Hiwins are
somewhere around $1400 ). Due to the backlash and other issues, I am
looking at Microkinetic screws at just under $1000, .003/per foot
error, with double nuts so the backlash can be adjusted out (also has
and oil system ports). I think Micrkinetics also does custom screws.

Be careful, when ordering screws, to make sure you understand what you
want, and what you will be getting. Don't assume anything.

( See:
http://www.wallacecompany.com/machine_shop/bridgeport/ (bottom half of
page) and,
http://www.microkinetics.com/convkit.htm (about a third of the way down)
)

If anyone has had good results with purchasing and using ballscrews,
please let me know. Buying ballscrews, just to see if they will work,
can quickly kill a project.

Low backlash is critical for good operation on a CNC, but if you are
using EMC2 and have a way to measure it, the accuracy of the screw
doesn't matter much since you can use screw compensation.

[Emc-users] ppmc .ko module will not load

2008-01-17 Thread Stuart Stevenson
Gentlemen,
I have a new install of Ubuntu 6.06 and EMC2. EMC2 is the -trunk
from cvs. I may be missing something obvious. I hope so. EMC2 will not
start when using any machine configured to use the ppmc board set. I
get a report telling me the .ko module will not load 'operation not
permitted'.
Also in the feedback is the message that the 378 address is not configured.
I can successfully test the board set using the ppmcdiags program.
Even a configuration matching a running machine (Dahlih) will not start.
I am not at the machine to copy the errors. If no one has a quick
(obvious) answer I will post the errors tomorrow morning.
thanks
Stuart

If the driver doesn't detect the board, it will refuse to load (well,
actually, it loads, tries to detect a board, and if it can't find one it
unloads).

If the board is missing, not powered up, the cable has issues, the
parport isn't in EPP mode, or the driver isn't using the right port
address, it won't be able to detect the board.

I believe the driver prints messages in the system log (dmesg) as it
tries to detect ppmc board(s) on startup. I don't recall the exact
wording, but they are labeled ppmc, so they shouldn't be hard to spot
in the log.

Regards,

[Emc-users] ppmc encoder faults

2008-01-17 Thread Stuart Stevenson
Gentlemen,
I noticed a problem with encoder boards today.
I have three ppmc encoder boards. Any one of the boards will run
the commtest without error for any length of time. Any two will give
random comm errors. This happens no matter the slots the boards are
installed in. The errors are not continuous but there are enough
errors to cause me to believe I cannot use two encoder boards in my
machine. The errors are the same using two different parallel cables.

Re: [Emc-users] Home and Limit Switch Setup in Stepconf

2008-01-17 Thread Jeff Epler
stepconf only gives a tiny, tiny subset of all the configurations that
can be created through emc2's HAL. It sounds like your home switch
configuration may be one that is not possible. You may be able to use
custom.hal and/or inifile tweaks after stepconf has run to get the
configuration you want, or you may be better off starting with a
traditional stepper_inch/stepper_mm configuration and editing it to
suit.

[Emc-users] Home and Limit Switch Setup in Stepconf

2008-01-17 Thread Chris Barker
Good Evening,

I am working through the setup of my router table using the Stepconf Wizard.
I have a question about how to configure my home and limit switches in
the wizard.
My machine is already setup and running using Turbocnc.
The way I already have my limits setup is:

Each axis has it's own home switch. The home switch also acts as a
minimum limit when home isn't being used.
3 input pins are used. Active low.

Maximum travel limits are combined on all axes in a serial conection.
Active low.
Only 1 pin is used on the par. port.

Stepconf doesn't seem to give me these options.
Is there another way I can set it up in the software?

Thanks,
Chris Barker

No obvious answer, but use the dmesg command to see the log
from the driver. In fact, dmesg | grep ppmc should filter out
just the ppmc-related lines. The blah.ko module will not load
message takes a guess at the cause, but it is wrong in this
case. What it really is saying is that module won't STAY
loaded, ie. it found something serious wrong and aborted. The
most obvious cause is it failed to detect any PPMC boards on the
bus. Usually, when the diag can find the boards, EMC can, too.
But, it is a different environment between RT and the diag
program, which runs as a Linux user program with priviledges.
When you check the dmesg output, make sure EMC is trying to
access the boards on the 0x378 I/O port address.

Back in the old EMC1 days, these drivers did not require any
kernel support to talk to the parallel port. Apparently now it
does require some lower-level port drivers. You want to set the
port to EPP mode in the BIOS setup screen, although the
diagnostic program should have the same trouble if that were the
problem. You say the diagnostic works.

Re: [Emc-users] Home and Limit Switch Setup in Stepconf

2008-01-17 Thread Dean Hedin
Chris make sure you are up to version 2.2.2
There are some bugs in the wizard regarding home/limit switch setup.

You may find it easier to just rewire the switches.

The most simple configuration is to put all the homes on one pin and
all the limits on another pin. Have a pull up resistor on each pin and any
on of the switches can pull
the line to ground.
