2023-01-17 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
Hello Ryan
I still get the list and read it from time to time but I haven't posted in
a while. As I'm almost 70 now I do a lot of reflecting back to when I
started my EV adventure with golf cart batteries and a Curtis controller.
Things have changed a lot over the years we can now get an amp hour meter
for less than 100 bucks when back in the golf cart battery days you meter
was close to 300. I remember when AC motors were an expensive dream and now
seem to be cheaper than DC brush motor and controller setups. Looking back
it should be easy to see tipping points at some point it was not
cost-worthy to build an electric car compared to buying one. Still people
today like to build things and they're certainly is enough salvage parts
from all the new EVs out there that one can cobble something together.
Today anything home made is compared with a Tesla pricewise and performance
wise. Steve Clunn

[EVDL] Think city car power limit light.

2021-02-02 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
I'm troubleshooting a city car for somebody which runs quite normal and
then for no apparent reason the limit light comes on and the car slows down
to a creep. Turning the key off and on restarts the car and it will again
Drive Normal for 50feet to a mile. I've investigated the 12 volt system
which seems to be operating good maintaining 14.2 volts and does not seem
to fluctuate when the limit light comes on. Batteries are charged all the
way up. Would be willing to pay a consultation fee to someone who's worked
on these quite a bit. Any ideas are welcome. Steve Clunn

[EVDL] : V2g for DIY EV's

2020-05-26 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
The inverter I'm using actually claims to not back feed to the grid but
only to supply power that one is using personally. In the ad they describe
the meter running backwards and people getting charged for giving
electricity so they understand the situation . I'm not sure I believe
this claim because detecting what the house is using and what's going to
the grid does not seem easy without something monitoring the power going
out of the house. I can turn everything off in the house and see. The grid
tie inverter that I'm using can run on batteries and I'm using it in the 96
volt mode which goes up to about a hundred and thirty volts. In maximum
power point tracking mode it goes up to 180 volts. I have three cars wired
up with 30 cells leaf and Tesla batteries. They all plug-in together in
parallel , solar panels , tie inverter and three cars. The BMS of each car
will shut off if the voltage gets too low or high and take that one car out
of line. In general I use about 10% of a car's charge at night. It's been
running about a year now but it constantly changes. At one time I talked to
the utilities about getting a different meter but it was a little expensive
and it's how I came up with this idea that I'm using now.

I found a grid tie inverter 1 KW for $300 that will run on 96 to about 140
volts. Reconfigured three cars to run on 30 cells and arranged my 15 KW of
solar panels to the same voltage. Most of the time all cars are plugged in
charging and powering the grid tie inverter twenty-four hours a day. This
supplements the house without pumping electricity back into the grid which
would require their special meter. So far it's been working pretty good.

Somebody in my area has a 2012 leaf with about 50,000 miles on it and when
they went to Drive it the other day it would not go and after taking it to
the dealer showed some era codes saying the Ptc heater insulation was not
up to specs also the "dc to dc jb with and open circuit". Dealer wants
$5,000 to fix this so I have an opportunity 2 try my hand at this that I
don't know how the computer and other stuff work. I could pay someone for
some consultation help in hopes of getting the job and getting something
done. After the car was at the dealers the dealer said that the car was
charged and that he should not charge it again or else it would go back
into the same shut down mode. Car drives fine and shows 7 bars of charge
but he has not plugged it in since he got it back from the dealer. Anybody
have any ideas or any other information I can get to explain the problem.

[EVDL] Fwd: Electric Noise and using capacitors to fix it

2018-08-01 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
A little more information on my setup. The setup I have is a zilla 1K
controller netgain 9 inch motor and the BMS is called the intelligent BMS
which is designed I believe for small packs like for bicycles. It has the
ability to turn off the load and the charger through a bank of mosfets but
it can only handle 10 amps. I have a relay and a power supply hooked to the
output and I use that to trigger a relay which then triggers a warning
light or opens a relay to turn off the charger. I have a 30 cell for the
front batteries and a 12 cell for the back. I'm using the thunder struck
charger with its evcc controller. It has two wires for the bms cell Loop
and when they are connected together we have no light,or ok to go. light
comes on when the loop is open in drive mode. In charge mode it turns the
charger off when the loop is open light to charge. I am having the cell
Loop light coming on when there is slow acceleration. I tried putting a
33 k resistor in series with the .47 uf capacitor and this may have made
things better I'm not sure I'll do more testing tomorrow. I'm open to any
ideas, everything works when in charge mode. Steve Clunn

[EVDL] Electric Noise and using capacitors to fix it

I'm having some problems with a conversion with 7 Tesla modules 42 cells.
When giving the car a little go pedal the BMS starts to flicker off and on
even though the cell voltage is not dipping. I put some .47 UF capacitors
between the frame and the battery packs at different points. Some seem to
help but I'm still got one BMS that is triggering on its own. Done the wire
moving around so they're not near the cables but that didn't seem to help
much. I'm wondering if I'm using two larger capacitor what is the rule of
thumb for the size of capacitors to get rid of noise on these lines. Any
help would be appreciated. Steve clunn

[EVDL] Mini bms

2018-07-24 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
When the mini BMS company stop selling they're Mini BMXs I started
exploring some of the ones sold on eBay for bicycles packs. I came across
one that I was pretty impressed with. It does a small amount of balancing
but can show all the battery voltages on your cell phone with download of
the app. The BMS board is not designed to run a relay but it will control a
small amount of amperage. I use a small power supply and a relay set up 2
run a contactor for the charger and a buzzer when in drive mode. I also
found that if you tap on one of the windows showing the individual cell
voltage that it will data log the cell voltage if left hooks to the
Bluetooth connection. You can adjust all parameters with a computer with
Windows 8 but not Windows 10. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out
how it works and there is not a lot of information provided by the
manufacturer. There's more information on our website

[EVDL] Hb404

2018-05-25 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
This is a great meter at a good price but I have found one glitch that
people should know about when using this meter to turn off battery chargers
at a set voltage. The way the instructions show to hook the meter up
requires that the meter not lose power for it to hold the battery charger
relay in an off State. So if you lose your 12 volt power that powers the
meter it won't shut off the relay that you have controlling your battery
charger. If you configure it the other way so that when the relay in the
meter is on the battery charger is on then you constantly have the relay in
the meter on and drawing current. This is not so bad a trade-off but adds
more to your 12 volt load. if the relay that's turning your charger off is
also on the 12 volt system then having the 12 volt system go down may not
cause a problem as your relay that's controlling the charger will also
stop but that said it is something to think about when you're setting
your system up. One could also set the meter up so that when the batteries
were fully charged and the meter relay turned off the charger that it also
turned off the power to the meter and then we wouldn't have that continuous
load on the system. Steve clunn with Greenshedconversions.com

[EVDL] Suspicious calb cell

2018-02-07 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
I've seen this a few times and not had any luck with warranting cells from
the company. One thing I have not seen mentioned that I believe might be
happening is that as these batteries get a little age on them and their
internal resistance goes up when they are charging their BMS starts
shunting current before everyone in the pack is charged and that one cell
starts to fall behind the others as the BMS shunts current which decreases
its amp hours in that cell. Which BMS are you using? I have wired another
cell in parallel with the offending stinker to fix the problem. Steve Clunn

[EVDL] Bms recommendations

2017-12-26 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
Mini BMS there's no longer making their BMS headboards or sell boards. I
looked on the eBay for BMS's and found one that could send information to
an Android phone about the cells voltage's along with voltage of whole pack
average voltage and current. They seem to be made for bicycles but they did
have a 30 cell model. They can be programmed for different cutoff voltages
and different amounts of cells. To control the shut-off when charging or
discharging they use a bank of mosfets so the amount of power these
transitions can handle is not up to what a car or a golf cart needs. I made
a little relay board that uses their control to turn the relay off and on
and have use them in a few battery packs for cars. They don't have a lot of
balancing capability I believe 60 milliamps is the rating of current. The
app for the telephone shows individual cell voltages and also data logs
each individual cell voltage along with the average voltage of the whole
pack and the charge discharge current. I bought mine from eBay for $100 and
then contacted the original supplier who says if I buy 10 I can get a
reduced price. I did a short YouTube video of one of these units hooked up
to some cells that I'm charging from my solar panels. There are a few other
videos on YouTube of this model but not a lot of information nor is there
much information from the company , xiaoxiang . They say nothing of the
data logging capability . https://youtu.be/Yj7a1wzpQGQ if this doesn't

[EVDL] Evnetics Jr controller current leakage

2017-11-04 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
I'm doing a project with a evnetics jr controller and a 9-inch warp motor.
On the motor side of the controller I've attached a small Christmas tree
light from the frame to the positive motor output and I seem to have about
10 milliamps of leakage to the frame. I don't have this leakage on the
input side of the controller. The leakages is only when engaging the go
pedal. I took the motor out and put it on a bench with cables going to it
so it would not be connected to the frame of the car. I did not see any
leakage current to the frame of the motor but still had leakage to the
frame of the car. I disconnected the controller from the car and put it on
a wood block. I also gave it its own isolated 12-volt Supply and still
leakage to the frame. I disconnected the reversing contactor and hooked
controller directly to the motor and still leakage to the car frame. I
hooked a heating element in place of the motor, then the linkage to the
frame is for a short time as the bulb gets bright and then goes out. With
the motor hooked up the Bob continually lights. I also took the dc-to-dc
converter out and that did not help. One other problem I've noticed is that
when I switch from forward to reverse the car would jump a little bit and
then the controller would era out and I would have to shut it down and turn
it back on to go in the other direction. I feel like I've tested everything
except putting in a new controller which I guess is next this seems like an
odd problem. Anybody have any ideas. Steve Clunn at

Re: [EVDL] I wonder where the Clunn's are

2017-09-11 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
We stayed here in Crystal River where the eye looked like it was just going
to hit. But today Monday morning things look pretty good. I've taken down
all my solar panels along and boards on Windows , the usual. I think Jerry
over in Tampa got it worse than us. We've actually been pretty busy. We
have what is called the assisted conversion plan and that's where I help
people do their conversions at our shop. I'm helping someone do a Camaro
right now with an 11 inch motor and automatic transmission. I'm not a big
fan of automatic transmission and we'll see how this works ( not my idea)
Also doing a few small projects for people with Nissan Leaf batteries set
up for replacing golf cart packs.

"months), not left on float chargers to rot. The higher their specific
energy (meaning higher SG electrolyte), the more they suffer from grid
corrosion.

PS - I wouldn't call most cars or pickups with 16 golf car batteries "lead
sleds."

I have quite a collection of golf cart batteries that I've taken out of old
conversions either to upgrade to lithium or people selling them so cheap I
couldn't say no. a trick that I have been doing to find out how good the
batteries are and bring them back somewhat is to split the pack in half
charge one half while just discharging the other half into the first half
with a extra battery that I swap the positive and negative to charge one
pack or the other. So a 96 volt pack could break down into two 48 volt
packs with a 12 volt a GM to push the power from one pack to the other you
can get a few cycles on these batteries and find out where they're at
easily. Good to have an amp power meter in between the two so you can see
how many amp hours of powers you are able to store. I would disconnect from
the car while doing this just to be on the safe side . Unhook the cable in
the middle of the pack and hook the middle of the pack negative to the
negative of the beginning of the pack and you'll have to positive terminals
one at the top of your pack and one in the middle. you will hook one to
the negative and one do the positive of your AGM battery thereby pumping
the current out of one side and into the other side of your new formed
48volt packs.. I've found that golf cart batteries are happy being charged
at about 40 amps 40 to 75 amps actually and charging at a low amperage all
the time does not seem to be the best for them. Of course you don't want to
overheat them watch your voltage. The last three years that I had my
lawncare business I had 38 Golf Cart batteries in my Mazda be 2000. I
charged my 96 volt lawn mower by dump charging from the 114 volt truck. 8
minutes to 80 percent , did that 10 times a day. Ahhh the good old days.

[EVDL] Re looking for a cheap load tester

2017-05-29 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
I have load tested and cycled large groups of batteries by dividing them
into two series groups ,then hook the two groups most positive's together
and put some sort of power supply between the two negatives. This pumps the
ah's from group to the other. I also have A amp hour meter hooked in
between . For a power supply you can use a few other batteries or a
variable transformer and rectifier. Best to start with half charged
batteries and do a few cycles,I've seem the ah grow with a few cycles so to
really know what you have, 10 cycles is good.

Re: [EVDL] EARTH DAY 2017

2017-04-15 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
In the past, Earth day has been a great opportunity to show off DIY
Electric Cars. For 18 years I hosted an Event in my home town on
Earth Day, Fort Pierce Electric Car Rally. Since moving to the Gulf
Coast of Florida we have been going to other Earth Day Events in Tampa
and St. Petersburg. Since we are on their mailing list, the
organizers, once again, sent us an email telling about their event and
inviting us to come. Upon responding to their email about bringing
our conversion, ( As we have the last 3 years), we were told that we
were welcomed to come, but not to bring any DIY vehicle because this
year they want to concentrate on OEM Vehicles only.

I believe, one of the purposes of DIYs was to show people what the car
companies could do, with the idea that if people demanded Electric
Vehicle, they would build them, and they did.

We seem to be entering the next part of the cycle.

"why would I build an EV when I can buy a USED OEM EV for less than
what it costs to make".

"why would I build a car with only a 50 mile range".?

"why can't DIY's charge as fast as the Tesla"?

The opportunities have never been better for DIY people. The parts
seem to be cheaper and there is an abundance of USED parts on the
market. That said, interest in doing conversions is at an all time
low I believe. This list was originally created to HELP people with
their conversions, sharing information on how to tackle problems of
converting a GAS car to Electric. I see very little on this list any
more about anyone doing a conversion. Most of what is on the list is
about the new cars coming out and public charging of OEM cars.

I think at this point we can look back and say, The best time for
DIY's was around 2005 to 2008?

The change that we have tried to initiate is now trying to eradicate
its originator.

[EVDL] Subject: Clean Power bites the dust

2017-03-08 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
In the past we have used the Mini BMS on low voltage projects like
Electric Lawn Mowers and Golf Carts. Now that Clean Power is no
longer, I have been beta testing other BMS'. There are many different
boards on Ebay that can handle up to 22 cells and do a small amount of
balancing. 60ma seems to be typical. They have a bank of Mos-fets
that will turn OFF the power to the motor or turn OFF power from the
charger. These looked to be designed for bicycles since they handle
less than 100amps. ( which makes them unsuitable Golf Carts) I have
been contemplating a way to use this to turn OFF a relay, which would
then turn OFF the main contactor and the charger. The problem is, on
the Charger side, the circuit is looking to see current flowing in to
the battery, so to power a relay, I am going to need a supply that is
more than the charged voltage of the battery pack plus the voltage
rating of the relay. There may be some way to tap in to the gate of
these mos-fets. The way these are commonly set up, when the voltage
is too low, one bank of Mosfets turns OFF stopping the power drain,
but the other side stays ON, allowing charging. I am wondering if
anyone has tinkered with one of these?

I have not seen this reported, but, it seems that Evenetics, (Soliton
Controller) is having issues. They seem to be only making the
controllers when they have an order for 10 or more. I do believe they
are still doing repairs, but I am not positive of that.

Even with the price of gas staying down, we still are seeing sustained
interest in EV Conversions. We seem to be moving more towards older
"Memory Cars", like my wife's 1956 Ford F500 and her 1967 Austin. I am
presently converting a 1966 MG Midget for a customer. ( Web page
under construction, but you will be able to see some pic's under the
tab SUMMER ROAD TRIPS, Summer of 2017).

Our most popular program, and probably what has kept us going is our
"Assisted Program". Where the customer and I do the conversion
together, giving the customer "hands on Experience".

[EVDL] Subject: Tractor conversion

2016-07-18 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
I semi completed my tractor, which can be seen at:

http://www.greenshedconversions.com/Pages/Projects.aspx Second Project
down.

After completing it, I realized a few things. I used an Electric Car Motor
from an Old Conversion ( not a Warp9), that had the Pressure Plate on it
and I was able to put the tractor clutch inside, but do not have the clutch
peddle working. I thought I would not need a clutch, but the problem is,
The Flywheel is so heavy and the gearing on the tractor so low, that it
takes half a minute for the flywheel to slow down and even with standing on
the brakes, the tractor still creeps along. So keeping a working clutch, I
believe, might be important.

I put a separate small motor to run the hydraulic pump. I have a reversing
contactor on the motor ( trying to deal with the fact the shifting without
a clutch is very time consuming).

The Motor being part of the Frame, that holds the front wheels, was not a
problem.

The other big problem I am having, is that it seems that tractors NEED a
lot of weight, especially over the back wheels. My tractor has the bucket
on the front, but if I get anything too heavy in it, the back wheels become
too light and won't get traction. So I will be re-arranging mine to put
more weight in the back. I have even thought about using Golf Cart
Batteries.

Some of the Logicsystem Controllers seem to work OK, especially the first
generation. I still have one on my Dixie Chopper. Of course, not running
them at their rated Peak Voltage seems to help.

[EVDL] Fwd: Steve Clunn's 1st Factor EV

2016-05-26 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
Hi All,

I have the truck up on EValbum, http://evalbum.com/preview.php?vid=5184

And we should be getting some pictures up on our web site ( listed below) soon.

In some of the paper work in the truck, I found the past owner,
Brandon Kirby, who purchased it in 1983 from the city of Knoxville, TN
and has owned it all these years. I got talk with him on the phone,
and discovered in our conversation, that he also used to be on this
list, back when it started. It had the original SCR Controller and
when he upgraded it to the DCP (Raptor) 156V/600amp Controller, he
said it was surprising how much better it did. Possibly a 1/3rd more
range.

It originally had 20 Golf Cart Batteries with 5 in the front, which he
moved to the back. It has about 40,000 miles, which are mostly his.

He got the truck from the City of Knoxville, TN, when something went
wrong with the charger and they could not fix it. This was the old
Lester Charger, which also charged the 12V battery. Originally it had
no DC/DC or way to charge the 12V battery, while driving.

Re: [EVDL] Steve Clunn's 1st Factor EV

2016-05-19 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
Up to this point, all my Electric Vehicles have been DIY Conversions
that I have done. So, moving up to a FACTORY converted vehicle is a
little Bitter Sweet.

Popping the hood and showing off my own work has always been very satisfying.

I am also a big fan of other people's conversions. To see how they
put them together and what solutions they come up with has always been
a thrill.

At EV car shows, where there are Tesla, Leaf's and Volts, its the DIY
conversions that interest me the most. ( these DIY's are fading fast).

I think it is remarkable what the big Factories are doing, but with a
team of engineers and the ability to build any part you want, they are
not really in the same league as home built EVs.

I am sure as everyone who is reading this is wondering ... WHICH
FACTORY EV I succumb to? At this point in the post, those that know
me, have already picked a vehicle that they THINK I might choose.
Anyone guess a 1980 Ford Courier, ElectraVan Done by JET
ELECTRIC ?

I was lucky enough to pick this truck up, in exchange for labor on a
conversion. The Battery box looks to have been extended to hold 20
Golf Cart Batteries. It has the OLD GE Motor, which had an oblong
Com. I was able to turn it on my neighbors lathe and was surprised at
how easy this was to do. It wasn't a problem of a lifted com bar,
just not perfectly round. The vehicle came with a Raptor Controller,
that did not work. I replaced it with a Soliton Jr. ( 500Amp
Controller). I have been driving it around with the old GOLF CART
Batteries, but plan on putting some LEAF Batteries in.

This was purchased by the City of Knoxville, TN in 1980 and sold to a
Mr. Kirby in 1983, who sold it this year to my customer.

I am thinking that this is a little bit of History here. Too bad
things hadn't gone different back in 1980. We could have ALL been
driving Electric Cars before the turn of the century.

I would be interested to know if any one has any information or
experience with this (Factory) Conversion. I would like to put the
information up on our web site.

Hi ALL Audrey here.!
Steve Clunn, who has been on your list for many years, showed me your
post... I had him do a VETTE a few years ago... it can be seen on the
HOME page of our WEB PAGE... We did it with TWO 9" Warp's and a 2K
Zilla... kind of sounds like what you all are talking about here.
Steve was very impressed with the low power consumption, I believe
300Watts per mile, although this was at slow speeds...( Leas Acid
Batteries that we loaned him were a little tired) The customer could
not afford the batteries at the time, so we we LOANED him some lead
acid batteries.

8 years ago, when everyone told ME .. NOT TO go into an EV Business.
... I forged ahead, against all odds, and a terrible economy, and gas
at $4.29 a Gal. to what I have today. A small EV company with 2
employees...converting mostly MEMORY CARS ( 1950...to about 1980's)
Classics. That said, Steve is doing a 1998 Porsche Carrera right
now.

I was a little surprised that Derrick Berger didn't give more
information about the batteries he is selling. ( you can see the
specs on our web page under HIGH END BATTERIES).. Steve was doing
some work for the man that imported a UPS Truck load of these
batteries, probably 5 years ago. I think my prices on these are as
cheap as any ones. Steve made a pack of these for a College and put
them in a 8x10.5 ( size of a Golf Cart ) box and test drove the
pack with his electric pick up. He was VERY happy that day... driving
the pick up around on ONE battery the size of a Golf Cart Battery !!!
Unfortunately, we don't have the specs on this project .. or any
pictures

Probably our most successful business plan is our "ASSISTED
PROGRAM".. ( under the COSTS Tab on our web page) was the bright Idea
of Steve. Basically, you buy the parts from me,... bring YOU and
YOUR VEHICLE to OUR shop...and you and steve go at it TOGETHER for not
only a reduced hourly rate, but some FUN Hands ON Experience. !!...
ANYTHING that you can do without Steve's help, you can do at our shop
in YOUR SPOT AT NO CHARGE. When you need steve's help, he is back
on the clock ! This may sound too good to be true, can you imagine
going to a tire shop, and taking the tire off the car... putting it ON
their tire machine, and then only paying for the tire guy to twist it
OFF with a machine...and put on a new one. Then YOU putting it
back on the car and paying for 5 minutes worth of work. Sounds too
good to be true, but it is.This is one of the things that has kept
my business going. !!

Another point, is we are at the lowest gas prices in many years. And
there still seems to be quite a bit of interest. Thing should only
get better from here. Best to JUMP on the TRAIN NOW !!

Hi all I've been keeping up with the list on my phone but can't use it to
reply ( .
My part of this project was to try to make what the customer though was the
way to do this, work. He picked a 2,600 lb 300hp sepex motor , because it
weighed as much as the diesel engine . We started and ended with a 2k zilla
hooked to the armature and a bank of relays and resistors to controller the
field ( field rated at 300v 6 amp ) . Things seemed to be working pretty
well until the Zilla erred he decided to switch to a contactor controller
using heating elements and contactors . He felt 3 speeds would be enough
and I tried to explain the move steps we had the less violent the change in
speed would be between each step , but what did I know. First ride with
this set up was quite entertaining nothing broke but the shift from
medium to hi was specular . Next came a 7 step set with 40 or so hot water
2400 w heating elements in series ,parallel , all inside pipe with water .
test run looked like a steam engine simi . It was some what more
controllable but not really real world drivable. so , back to the zilla

It was hard to get real numbers as to power used with all the monkey play
going on , I seem to remember 50 mph pulling 300 amps at 300v while
cruising . The info in on one of the videos , . I would have liked to have
used 2 net gain 11" seems like they would handled the 300 amps .

The video is on our web site and Youtube

Re: [EVDL] 9-Inch ADC Motor Max Voltage

2015-01-11 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
I am surprised this questions did not get more answers.

I am not an authority, but have been observing these motors for 20
years. We really can't talk about the Voltage across the motor
without talking about RPM and Amperage. If you tried to put 170V
across the Motor with less than 500 RPM, the amperage is going to go
to the moon. ( 1000s of Amps).

So, the question needs a little more information. As the RPM goes up,
the resistance of the motor goes up ( the back EMF). We also need to
keep in mind that the Maximum RPM of these motors is below 7000. Even
72V will make one of these motors fly apart if there is no load on it.

One thing many new comers do not understand about Series Motors is the
fact that the Controller is converting battery Voltage into Motor
Amperage. So a 300V battery pack is no problem as long as you have a
PWM Controller. If you are trying to get the absolute maximum power
out of one of these motors the N.E.D.R.A forum might help. But if you
are just worried about your battery pack voltage being too high for
your motor maybe you need to re state your question and give more
information on what batteries you have, what controller...etc.

Back .. in the days... when 120V was the Maximum Voltage the
Controllers could handle ... I noticed that in many cars, in second
gear, with a controller at full throttle, ( so motor voltage and
battery Voltage were both 120V) the Amperage would be about 100 Amps.
I don't know what the RPM was, but I imagine it was close to the max.

When the 156V Controllers came out, it was no longer possible to
cruise with a Controller in this Full ON state (motor voltage the
same as battery voltage). So, the 36V higher battery voltage would
push quite a bit more amperage through the motor.

 recent

his golf carts and was able to pull out 220 amp hours without the
BMS alarming , then left the key on for several days, which then
pulled the full rated 260ah out over the next few days . There were
a few cells who's voltage had fallen down between 2.65 and 3 volts
that said most where over 3 volts . Willie's strategy of having a
large pack , about 40 kilowatt hours I believe has helped give him
years of service . He has over 44,000 miles on the cars 48 cells.
he also does a slow charge most of the time and equalizers with a 1
amp charger letting the mini BMS system bring all up to 3.6v. He may
have about 400 cycles on them .

Re: [EVDL] 4 to 12 Cell Lithium BMS

2014-09-17 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
One of my problems with the setup that I have is that the Contactor is for
both driving and Battery Charging, so, the Contactor ends up being ON
almost all of the time.
The Mini BMS Modules that are on these batteries, work by breaking a loop
circuit. Any time the voltage is above 3.6V or below 2.75V they will open
their control circuit and all the BMS' control loops are in one big series
string, so that any cell not being happy will cause the contactor to turn
OFF, which will turn off the charger or the load.
As you can see with this set up, when charging or driving, we have the same
contactor sipping power.

One solution of course, would be to have the charging circuit separate from
the Load Circuit and I could even have the foot peddle engage and disengage
the main contactor, but I still have to deal with charging and since the
chargers are not on board, I have to deal with switching the DC input
current.
I have some transistors ( fets) that I may play with as Cor van de Water
suggested for the charger.
The head board that comes with this set up seems to be changing with each
new revision. I have not had a lot of luck figureing out from the web site,
all the little details and how to make a contactor for charging and a
contactor for driving be powered from the same board. thanks for all your
input.

[EVDL] 4 to 12 Cell Lithium BMS

2014-09-16 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
I am working on some Golf Carts and portable 12V power packs that get used
sporadically and may sit for months without use.

I have contactor on one 12V and 36V that draws about 1 amp. The problem
is, if everything is happy, the Mini BMS Circuit keeps the contactor ON.
Which draws enough current, that at some point, will drain the battery down.

I am trying to come up with a way that the owner can walk away from this
system, and come back to it and have it ready to go without having to
switch switches OFF and ON.

One thought I have had is to set it up with a transistor that controls the
contactor. And after so many hours, will turn OFF the contactor. My
thought was a Mosfet with a large Capacitor and a Momentary switch to
charge the capacitor which would keep the contactor ON for maybe 10 hours
while the Capacitor slowly drained down.

Of course, the operator will have to engage this each time he uses the
battery, but at least it will turn its self off automatically.

I am wondering if anyone has any other ideas... that doesn't involve a
micro processor.

I am noticing that the smaller the parts that I am working onthe longer
it seems to take !

[EVDL] Fwd: Mustang/Hybrid

2014-07-26 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
A few things I haven't seen mentioned is that all these posts are archived
so that people can look things up and how crazy am I does not say anything
about Mustang hybrid conversions. This is why I replied with a new title
so it can be archived for other people to research later.

I read that you are a little discouraged about finding out that amps don't
add along with voltage. That said, you should also know that it does not
take a lot of power to go down the road. 300 to 500 watt hours per mile may
be confusing for you. 10 to 15 horsepower for cruising and 50 horsepower
for accelerating moderately is what we're talking about.

We have had the ac vs dc argument here so many times. If you leave out the
money factor AC. Maybe is the way to do it , I will concede that. I am
doing a project right now that is similar to what you are talking about in
some ways ( it can be seen on my website) This will have a small generator
in the front instead of the original gas engine as has been talked about
here. It has 48- 200ah cells and we'll have a 20 horsepower gas generator
sitting where the engine used to be. TWO - 9 Net Gain Motors connected to
the drive shaft and a 2k Zilla Controller, which will cost about the same
as Two AC motors 31s 51s. I've done this setup 4 Times now and this is
the performance the customer got.

Green Shed Conversions (dot com) Sells hi output batteries and I have seen
them put out 60C or 300 amps from a 5amp

http://www.greenshedconversions.com/Pages/HIGHENDBATTERIES.aspx

The problem with these high output cells is that they cost five times as
much as the regular lithium so one could have five times the range at the
same cost which would be proximately 25ah and give a possible 100 amps
instantaneous power.. Those are the trade-offs.

[EVDL] Fwd: Leaf Blower

2014-07-26 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
I have the Ryobi Electric Leaf Blower and bought it along with a weed
wacker, hedge trimmer and chainsaw that all use the same battery .

To turn this around keep it on topic I was thinking when purchasing
them that their 44V Lithium battery could be used for an electric
bicycle. With all these tools that I got I have two batteries to work
with. I wrote the company telling them what a great thing they had
done because 1. the tools works really good and 2. this was a great
opportunity for someone to come up with a lot of different things that
could run off of these batteries. A portable battery charger for
cars, a charger for a cell phones , a light , as a 120 AC inverter ,
electric bicycle Electric Boat with trolling motor the list went on I
told them if they would send me a little attachment so I could attach
things to their battery like the battery charge plug or weed wacker
handle so I could plug in to the battery and get power easily to make
these things work I would work on this for them. They were not
interested , I will make my own when I get some time. The electric
bike is my new dream.

[EVDL] Hybrid/Mustang

2014-07-21 Thread Steve Clunn via EV
About 10 years ago Net Gain was making a kit to do just this.
They had two motors that were 11 inch and also 6.7 specially developed
to have high torque and lower rpm. It would fit right in line with the
drive shaft. You cut the drive shaft and attach one end to the front
of the motor and the other into the back. Of course you have to have a
way for the drive shaft to expand and contract. Their idea was to make
it with a plug that would plug into the car's computer and would turn
the motor on and off at the appropriate time and be able to drive
around on battery power for short distances. They had a 72 V Alltrax
controller. I'm sure a lot of development time went into this to get
it to talk to the car's computer. Some nice idea but they
discontinued the program. That said there's nothing saying you
couldn't pick this idea backup. I worked on one of these setups
briefly with another company. I don't think it ever really workout as
well as they had hoped as it was a big truck and as you can imagine a
big truck with a 7200 volt 6 AGM batteries would not get you very far.
Today with the lithium batteries you could get a much larger pack and
much more distance. I've done a few of the drives haft modifications
on vehicles where we use Two 9 s or one net gained 11. I found that
the price of drive shaft work varies quite a bit. Here in Oklahoma I
had a drive shaft shortened and then and new skyline put on, to match
the Transwarp net gain 9 motor and it was a little over $100 back in
Florida the same work at another shop cost over $300. I believe that
Net Gain still makes the 6.7 inch motor for this application. I am NOT
it Florida and I'm don't have a computer. If you need any information
on the 6.7 mention that Net Gain motor and Audrey can supply that for
you.

when my daughter and I would be anywhere and hear some one talking

NOBODY should die like that.
My wife, at that time, announced if NOBOY helps me NOTHING'S going to

them all the time in our language. NOBODY sells cars for less.
I'm not going to take NOTHING from NOBODY.

Re: [EVDL] Mini BMS problems / solution.

2014-04-03 Thread Steve Clunn
I just finished installing 66- 60ah Calb batteries in a Mini Cooper.
When I tested the car, I got the alarm right away from the mini BM
headboard. No lights on the mini BMS modules, so no low battery
cells, but the alarm sounded every time the gas pedal was pushed. I
started trouble shooting, taking out different parts of the equation.
When I cut out the front battery pack I did not get any alarm.
Thinking that it must be something in the front pack I spent more time
than I care to admit doing things to the front pack, trying to get
the alarm to stop. At one point I ran wires from the back to the
front coming out the front window and still got an alarm, even when I
didn't have the modulus hooked up to the wire and had the wires
connected together. It turned out that the wires going forward had
to pass over the DC DC converter and because of the tight position
were laying right on the DC to DC converter.

Rerouting the wires away from the DC to DC converter solve the
problem. The mini BMS alarm wires work like a large set of Christmas
tree lights. If anyone goes out it breaks the circuit and sets off the
alarm. The output from the headboard to the chain of BMS battery
boards is about 100 microamps . Interesting this happened on April
fools day. I remember a few years back someone posting on April
fools day joke about a new screen that was so fine it would strip the
hydrogen atoms off of the water molecules so as to make hydrogen to
run fuel cells from water

Re: [EVDL] Manzanita Micro PFC20 charger

2014-02-13 Thread Steve Clunn
I have a Manzanita Micro PFC20 charger.? According to the manual (and
searching prior posts) this charger can function with a DC input.
Specifically I want to charge a 48V pack from a 148V pack
Has any actually used this charger with a DC input?,

I've had mixed luck doing this but I often find I need to drain down a
pack and watch the batteries as they drain which is hard to do while
driving . So I'll charge another car's pack using one of my Manzanita
chargers and power it off the cars battery that I want to watch. Some
do's and don't s : Always start the charger with the current knob on
OFF ( don't plug in with ON and current turned up ) . The charger
won't current limit well when running off dc so if you don't want full
charger amps going into or coming out of your pack, you could have a
problem. Don't unplug either pack while charger is running . Don't
turn OFF the charger with a breaker without turning current knob OFF
. Might be best not to use the breaker at all as its not really rated
for DC , but as long as the current knob is turned OFF I have not had
a problem this way . One of the things I like about Riches Manzanita
charger is that I can use it to drain one pack into another .. but one
must turn the current knob down before any power is applied . Don't
try to charge the 12v battery in the same car off it's traction pack
as there may be some current leakage from traction pack to frame .

I'd be interested to hear what Rich say about it ,,, I wouldn't loan
my PFC to somebody for doing this but I do do it often myself and I
still have one of his older models ( the one with the ears added on )
.

2014-02-12 Thread Steve Clunn
Awhile back I wrote about a possible job doing a 18 wheeler with a
2600 lbs sepex motor that I was looking for a controller for .. Lucky
for me I got the opportunity to work on this project and my employer
is a balls to the wall kind of guy . So we used a 2k zilla on the
armature and I set up a resistor , contactor set up to run the field
.. The field is rated for 300v at 6 amps . At that current the motor's
rpm was to slow to make the automatic transmission work but after
cutting the current back on the field to about 2 amp the motor had
plenty of rpm's .. We have lots of fine tuning to do but right now it
runs down the road on 300 to 400 amp ( 300v ) with an empty trailer ..
Here is a video of our 2nd ride. mmm

Re: [EVDL] Subject: Battery Monitor

2014-02-01 Thread Steve Clunn
Hi all... Audrey here ( the other half of STEVE CLUNN)
Steve has made something similar to what you are asking for, here is a link
to our web page:

http://www.greenshedconversions.com/Pages/BatteryManagementSystem.aspx

Batteries in a long series string can get out of sinc with each other. This
system gives one the ability to look at each batteries voltage by using a
series of Rotary Switches and a wire connected to each individual battery.
Along with being able to look at each batteries Voltage, we have a small DC
Power supply that can be turned on to give a little extra boost to any
battery lagging behind.

Steve used two of the positions on one of the 11 pole dp switches to engage
the other two 11 pole dp switches. Each switch looks at 8 batteries. One
also looks at the house (aux) Battery.

We have the 10 pos switches for sale..
Steve said the one caveat with this system ... is that you end up with
high voltage wires being run to where ever you have the switches. He uses
26 awg wire, with the idea if there ever is a problem with anything
shorting, it will burn the wires off the terminals easily. ( o the
good ole days, when we did it ourselves !!!... when a little smoke
wouldn't cause a LAWYER alarm !! LOL )

Re: [EVDL] Michael's 48V lawn tractor/mower conversion

2014-01-03 Thread Steve Clunn
Hi Michael,

A couple of thoughts on the lawn mower project. The last 3 years that I
had my lawn business, I used a very inefficient Dixie Chopper that I
converted. These are monster mowers that mow very fast. 10 minutes to do
the average yard. My set up had about a 15 to 20 min. run time. I used 12V
AGM's, which I charged from my electric truck in less than 10 minutes. I
was able to cut 10 yards or more a day. The lawn mower would charge fully
while I weed wacked and blew off the drive. So you don't necessarily need
to have a lot of run time, if you can set up a fast charging system. My
other thought is to make a mobile Lithium Pack and use the battery pack
for some other projects. Like Golf Buggy, Motorcycle or boat.

here is a short video of my mower and more info can be found on our web

[EVDL] Recent Learning Experiences

2013-12-08 Thread Steve Clunn
Recently I was balancing an 85 Cell pack for a customer. I had the
pack charging at a few amps on my PFC UNisolated charger. ( the Green
Box). And as I probed around with my meter, I found one cell
exceptionally low. I also have a little R/C Charger that puts out
10amps, (depending on the input power supply) and can charge one
battery nicely without over charging it. I have quite a collection of
power supplies and had picked one of the highest output that I had.
It had not occurred to me that the 3-pronged supply I had picked would
have the GND wire connected DIRECTLY to the NEG of the 12V output.
Good News is... the power supply is fine ! The Bad new is my R/C
charger took up the bad habit of smoking and died very quickly. The
funny thing is.. I had thought about the whole situation before doing
it, since dangling leads have a way of running to the worst possible
place. And I really like this I-Charger what would charge up to 10
cells and would keep track of amp hours.

The other interesting thing I learned this week, while selling one 12V
-4 cell block of the GBS Batteries. A customer I have spent HOURS on
the phone how to work a Voltmeter, got these cells in the mail, along
with the regulators. He called me up and informed me that they had
come, that he was going to have to attach the regulators to the
batteries. We talked about (+) and (-) and which way they go, and I
thought things were pretty clear, until he told me that he had 4
regulators but there was only places for 3 of them. I knew we had 4
cells, but said ... let me send you a picture when I get home. I get
a call back that he has hooked the regulators up, I ask are the lights
on.. .he says no.. again much talk of (+) and (-)...and why is
there one extra regulator. I send him a picture and find that he has
hooked the regulators across 2 cells the (+) of one and the (-) of
the second.and this is why in the group of 4 there was only 3
places to hook them!

Over the years I have been a lot kinder in my thoughts, toward myself
for doing stupid things and toward other people. I strive to be that
person that picks up on the little hints and avoids mishaps. I just
hate blowing up parts for no good reason.

I am sorry about Wayne and the paint Dust. I am glad he posted what
happened, because it is a heads up. And this is one of the wonderful
things about this list. Recent discussion of the 5 cent Electric
theft is a good example of how a little knowledge ahead of time can
save things.
A lot of things in the story don't quite add up, but we still can
learn a lot from this.

2013-10-31 Thread Steve Clunn
Thanks for the laugh this morning LOL... Maybe you guys missed the extra
fine print that says, controller should not be run over 1/2 the rated
voltage... or the part that says ... Don't engage controller contactor
unless Motor is Spinning at least 1000 RPM or maybe the partConsumer
will supply Motor Current Limiting on Motor side. LOL

That said, here is a short Video of the Golf Cart that I was going to put
this controller in. I am sticking with the Contractor/Resistor/ Coil set
up that it has now.

When I get time to fix it, maybe I'll keep the Resistor/coils to soft
start the Logic controller.

[EVDL] Change profile for ziban

2013-10-27 Thread Steve Clunn
Another fix for this problem could be to use some bridge rectifiers in the
series with the output of the charger. each bridge rectifier will drop the
voltage 1.7 volts. you would have to have a heat sink on them to handle the
current of the charger. you could have a switch that bypasses the
regulators for the heavy duty equalizing charge.

[EVDL] Morris Minor Conversion

2013-10-17 Thread Steve Clunn
Hi... Audrey here, ( the other half of STEVE CLUNN)
I picked up a really nice 1967 Austin, MK1100.. Steve will tell you
that HE MADE me do the conversion... I will tell you he LET me do it
!!! Lots of FUN and we are still working on it.. Just added a new 172V
Lithium Pack !!
I have an 8 Advance DC motor ( the 9 Warp didn't fit).. One thing
you need to think about ... on some of these cars, the engine and
Tranny were build together. Because of this we could not use the
original Transmission, but Steve put in a 1986 Toyota Tercel Tranny.
Mine was a front wheel drive. Steve Cut the axels from the Toyota and
welded them to the axels that were IN the Austin, so they are Austin
on one end and Toyota on the other !...
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this little car !! It is so much fun to drive and
to show off at all the Cruise Night and Cars Shows. It handles real
well, I even completed one of my BUCKET LIST and DRAG Raced it at a
N.E.D.R.A. event here in Florida.I used a 500amp Soliton
Controller in Mine.. I just got a DC to DC.. IF you look on my web
page... under the TAB for PROJECTS.. go about half way down, and you
will see the start of the project. I lost a lot of pictures but
could send you some if you have any questions.
These little light cars are real Gems for converting.

Re: [EVDL] 1998 F150 truck conversion : Feasibility question

2013-10-09 Thread Steve Clunn
You didn't say what your plans were for your old conversion.

 I have a 1986 F150 Ford Pick up. with a standard 4 speed
Transmission, , Clutchless adapter plate and a 9 Net Gain Motor. It
has a super low Grannie Gear that is not used often, but if you are
plowing snow, you might want to use that. Top speed in 1st is about 15
mph. I would be happy to trade the whole truck for the vehicle you
are taking the parts out of. You keep your motor, controller etc. I
ll keep my motor. The only problem I see, is that there might be
something with your 4 wheel drive that can't be shifted over.

[EVDL] Plug In Day, 2013

2013-09-30 Thread Steve Clunn
Audrey and I went to the Sarasota, FL event. We were there last year
and like Cruise has pointed out, there were 1/2 as many conversions
this year at the event as there were last year. I must say, I am a
little surprised by the way things are going. I would have expected a
blossoming of EV's from every angle. More conversions and more
factory Ev's. But What I am afraid we are seeing is half as many
conversions and twice as many factory. Quite a while back I had taken
one of Lee's Quotes from Gahandi, about how they try to laugh at us,
ignore us, hate us and then we win... and I added and then they take
what we have done and claim it as their own... I think this is what
is up setting to people like Cruise who probably takes Great pride
in his work. Audrey is quite a bit the same way, she is very proud
of her little Green Bean that she has done so much work on her self (
I will take credit for Wielding the WHIP!!!). Was it Rush that
pointed out that we must have a positive attitude about these people
who are buying FACTORY EV's... and strutting around like proud
roosters about great things they have done, and how adventurous they
are. One of the conversions at the Sarasota show had the lead acid
batteries and the owner had artfully attached a melted off battery
post ! Something, I am sure, no Tesla or Volt owner will EVER do !~!
For that matter it is doubtful, that anyone owning a factory EV will
ever do ANYTHING to the car, other than plug it in. Talking to most
people on a philosophical level, they will agree that probably our
main purpose here is to learn. And what separates us from the lower
forms of intelligent life is our ability to learn and devise solutions
to problems.
When we see any animal or person who has ingeniously figured a way to
deal with their life's problems we always applaud that and tip our
hat.
My prediction is that we are going to continue to see a downward
spiral of home conversions for the next 7 years. ( Lee's 7 year EV
cycle that he talks about). At which point there will be enough
Leafs, Volts and Tesla's in the junk yard that DIY'ers can pick up
battery packs and motors at a cheap price and build their own. This
will be similar to what happened to the Hot Rods. For those DIY'ers
that are feeling pushed out by the new Factory EV buyers, we must
remember the good times we have had, even though it may not have
seemed like it when we were dealing with the problems that we had to
in the past. We had a great opportunity for learning and it is really
not over. At regular car shows, were people are showing off their
custom made hot rods, a nicely done EV conversion still has a place.

2013-08-13 Thread Steve Clunn
From: Lee Hart
2600 lbs? My gawd; railroad locomotives don't have motors that big.

Yep ,The logic behind it was that the diesel engine weighed that much
.. so we better get an electric motor about the same size . The
salesman from Baldor motors and his consultant ( all before my time )
seemed to feel that was what he needed.

I rather doubt that any normal controller will be able to deliver that
kind of power for any length of time. They are all designed on the
assumption that their peak power only needs to be available for a matter
of seconds.

the truck got about 6 to 8 MPG I'm not thinking that it really needs
ton's of power , just 3 or 4 times what a puck up might use . The
motor is continuously rated at 300 hp but that is not what would we
needed . I'm looking at it this way if the diesel engine 30% eff ,,a
gallon of diesel is about 30 kwh energy so 10kwh to the axle would go
6 miles or 1.6kwh per mile or 96kw 500v 200 amps

I'd contact the motor manufacturer, for advice on what controller this
motor was designed for. Otherwise, you're headed for some very expensive
stumbling around in the dark.,

The salesman for the motor manufacturer is who talked him into this
motor and for some reason the controller was not ever though of , now
they are saying it will have to be custom made and will be the size of
a small room .

From: Jeff Major
So what controller was this project manager planning to use?
The Project manager is also the owner and driver ,, guess trucking is
pretty lucrative . He seemed unaware that he would need a speed
controller till I talked to him .

I'd scrap the DC idea and see if these guys would sell you an AC drive.?
http://www.balqon.com/?

Ya that looks good , But he has the motor and can't return it ,,, If
it were me I'd have tried using 3 9 or 3 11 net gains with a 1k
soliton on each one , maybe blowers on the motors

[EVDL] Neon / Diamond in the rough

2013-07-29 Thread Steve Clunn
I just finished taking a pack of Lithium Batteries out of a 1995 Neon.
This car is now on the chopping block. It has a 9 Advance DC motor,
clutchless adapter plate and 5 speed transmission. It has a Curtis
Controller ( which could be taken out, lowering the price) Battery
Boxes are made for 40 of the 160ah TS Batteries. The Car is primed
and no dents or rust that I noticed. This would be a GREAT car for
someone wanting to get into the exciting world of home made
conversions. The price for this Gem is $2,500.00 and if you are
between Texas and Florida, we may be able to work out delivery. You
can see it on our web site, under Pre Owned Evs Tab.
I drove the car just before taking the batteries out.. and other than
needing a bushing in the shift linkage, the drive train runs fine.
Why would someone get rid of a diamond in the rough like this? One
word... TESLA !

I'm puzzled by this post. I don't understand why you stripped the lithium
battery out. Why not offer the Neon for sale as a usable, running EV? Was
the battery kaputt? If so, why not drop in a simple, low cost working lead
battery, so some buyer can have a daily driver? curious

The Batteries in the Neon were in good shape, well cared for and are
now resting in ANOTHER Diamond in the Rough, a Ford Ranger that had
Lead Acid batteries that were dead. There are just some incredible
deals out there. This Ranger that I put the Lithiums in has the MR2
power steering, a heater with water pump, a nice stereo and lots of
other amenities, like aluminum drive shaft, fiber glass hood and back
fenders. Somebody really did some loving on this car. A bit of a
rats nest in the wiring, which I am slowly bringing back. I read the
log that the person who did the car kept and it started out with a lot
of enthusiasm, but at some point I noticed in their writings that
their Golf Cart Batteries were getting a little out of sync. I
believe it was 3/10th of a Volt. and then the log stopped. Kept of
like finding a diary of a hiker and an empty nap sack. So that is the
reason for taking the batteries out. I don't believe the owner really
has much hope of selling this. He has TESLA OSIS ! And
anything BUT a Tesla looks like an old plow horse compared to a John
Deere Tractor. This had battery boxes set up for the 160ah TS
batteries. The batteries were in the back seat area, the trunk area
was never used. Did I mention that it has an Air Conditioning pump
and power Steering pump set up to run off the tail shaft of the 9
motor. Air Conditioning looks plumbed, but I don't have any idea if it
works. I believe he would be happy to see it go to a good home. I
have a short video of it driving, before I gutted it. I would
actually consider keeping this for my self BUT as Audrey reminds
me... I have.. lets see One 914, 2 Porsche 912's, a Ford F150, Dune
Buggy, 2 Coco NEV's, 2 golf carts, a Mazda B2000, Mitsubishi pick up,
AND the HULK (the 1956 Ford) and then of course Audrey has HER Rav4
and her 1967 Austin. She is NOT going to let me bring this back to
Florida. Did I forget to mention the Vetrix and my Suzuki electric
Motor cycles? Of course everything I have needs work and they are all
diamonds in the rough also.
Steve Clunn

Audrey here... a little paint, some new batteries and this would be a
really nice daily driver for someone CHEAP! $2,500 is cheap. A new
motor with shipping is $2,000 so whatever else you get is almost
gravy. This has the Curtis Controller and Adapter Plate. Great Father
/ son weekend project.

[EVDL] BMS controlling pot box

2013-07-19 Thread Steve Clunn
From: Lee Hart leeah...@earthlink.net
I thought I would ask again for any explanation on how the 0-5k pot
works on the zilla to increase voltage (counter-intuitive)
and how does the BMS affect that by reducing voltage?

I just installed a orion BMS for a guy with a wv buss before leaving
Florida and wrote a post on it but some how got deleted .
The buss customer was in a hurry for me to get done and just wanted (
do what ever is quickest) a light on the back engine compartment (
not even a light on the dash or a buzzer :-( ) . I don't remember
which 2 wires I used to control the relay but they should be in the
instructions . I like Lee's way of putting the 2.5k resistor in
parallel as it won't stop the car dead but cut back on the power in a
way that you will notice it .

The standard arrangement for EV
controllers that use a 0-5k pot box is:

  - Minimum resistance = minimum speed.
  - Maximum resistance = maximum speed.
  - Shorted pot wires forces the controller OFF.
Actually, any resistance under a few hundred ohms is off.
  - Open pot wires also forces the controller OFF.
Actually, any resistance over about 4500 ohms forces it off.

This set up gives a lot of safety for thing that can easily happen

You need to talk to someone very familiar with the design of the
controller (like Otmar Ebenhoech for the Zilla) to get an accurate
answer on this.

I would save your one call to the controller god for a real problem
. This is more a question for your dealer who makes money on selling
the parts . When I was setting up the Orion BMS I did have to call
them and they where very helpful ( probably not had to tell 100's of
people which end of the soldering iron to hold ) . There are a lot of
feathers on this , Audrey with her 900 number voice talked them into
letting us become a dealer so If you don't know which two wires run
the relay when the voltage of any cell drops below it thresh hold I'll
have her look it up .

But, it's not really necessary that you know. It's only necessary that
you set up your Orion BMS to change the *resistance* across the potbox
terminals to limit the motor speed.

Yes but Mike is probably worried about hooking something up wrong ,You
can do Lee's set up and just power the relay with a 12v source and see
that it works , then hook the BMS to the relay coil. ,

Did you say the Orion BMS has a relay that it turns on if any cell's
voltage is low?

I think you can program the BMS to either turn on or off for the
fault ( like a dp relay and you pick what state you want)

You can set it to cut
back on the throttle, or even prevent you from driving if the total pack
voltage falls under X volts. This is another way to keep from destroying
cells if one goes dead.

Yes but I wouldn't count on this to much as one cell going bad and
dropping voltage will not be enough tell the controller there is a
problem .
I will be coping your relay idea and sending it on if that's ok .

write . pick up meter and read again .

They like simple, straightforward designs

I've bought from them, and seen examples of their conversions.

But they seem to have fallen on hard times of late.

One problem small businesses have , they are to small to handle the

  Sometimes something can be

Maybe our VW poster will come back with a good report , I'd like to

wrote a coloum on EV's in Home power magazine with lots of good
information . I talked to Shari on the phone quite a bit and got my
first adaptor plate from them. No problems back then .

The big auto company EVs are *so* attractive and alluring. But, they are
very expensive, and produced in very low numbers. They have suddenly
backed out of the EV market before, leaving all their vehicles either
crushed or orphaned, and they could easily do it again. I don't trust them!

And yet all car company's have to start small , have to do good by
there customs ( to stay in business) and good by there employees, yet
in the end they all go down hill one way or another.

[EVDL] Hairball power problem

2013-05-22 Thread Steve Clunn
From: Steve Clunn
I would go this way to easy to imbalance the house battery

well I left out the subject and left out the NOT in the above , so
should be I would not go this way as it would imbalance .

some kind of voltage regulator in the circuits going into the hairball.

Yes with a zenor diode and power transistor and you have a voltage regulator ,

[EVDL] Main Circuit Breaker for Charger

2013-05-11 Thread Steve Clunn
We have moved in to ( and are still moving) our new place, and my work
shop was set up with 240V coming in, but it had a 15amp and a 20amp
breaker, not ganged together to supply power for the shop.So I am
charging some stuff up with the PFC Charger and one of the breakers
pops. I am out in the yard working and I hear the charger cycling up
and down and turn off the charger and check the breaker and, yes, one
is popped. Later, I discovered one of my drill chargers wasn't
working. And I realized when the one leg popped, the charger probably
pushed current through what ever was plugged into the other leg and
probably over voltaged my poor, little drill charger.. luckily it
wasn't from my NEW drill. ( one more thing to fix now !)... But this
is something to keep in mind when plugging in your charger Making
sure your breaker will shut down BOTH legs if it is tripped. This,
of course, would be the problem with taking power from 2 120V outlets
that are not on a ( Ganged) breaker.

[EVDL] devil's advocate on buying a Leaf

2013-05-07 Thread Steve Clunn
 From: Chuck Hursch ch1...@gmail.com
Old technology, but still interesting and still works.? I put it
together with my own hands, and all the sweat equity is there.Chuck

This is somewhat of a classic. At our 15th Annual Electric Car
Rally last weekend..a Porsche 914 took first place in the show and
shine...the Volt and Leaf came in dead last. Our Judges where just
visitors that came to the show . You have a unique car right now.
with lead acid batteries or switching to Lithium. What you may be
feeling is the in between phase . Its not a Baker or a Henry kill a
watt,, and not quite an Antique.

[EVDL] Logisystems pot box

2013-05-03 Thread Steve Clunn
From: damon henry damonhe...@hotmail.com
Well, I knew I was jinxing myself. Count mine as another dead
Logisystems controller. Let out the magic smoke today just shifting
cars around in the driveway
damon

And then there were three... nooo probably more than that. It
sounds like yours was living a very easy life.. a clutch, a small
motor and not too high a voltage. I am wondering what kind of rituals
I can do to mine to keep him going.?? Well it sounds like it didnt
happen while you were far from home. What controller are you
thinking of replace it with?

[EVDL] Logisystems pot box

2013-04-30 Thread Steve Clunn
I am looking for a Logisystems (non linear) 5k pot box. I actually have a
Zapi controller, but it has similar issues to the Logisystems where it is
way too jerky on startup. I used to have a Logisystems pot when I used
their controller in a different car. I've looked, but it appears
Logisystems is gone (out of business?). Does anyone have one of these pots
or can tell me how to achieve the same result modifying my existing Curtis
PB-6? I believe their pot box is geared to achieve the effect.
Steve

I have one. I would be willing to let it go for $50.00 plus ship or
TRADE for a working PB-6..

I still have a logisystem controller that I am using on my lawn mower
that still works and there are two others that I know of that are
still working.. It seems, that the very FIRST logisystems do not
suffer the problems that the older ones did. This was a fancy gear
drive throttle box but it didn't really seem to solve the problem for
the later model logisystem controllers. Does anyone have any thoughts
about what went wrong with this company? They seemed to be good people
trying fill in ( Zilla had shut down and Soliton and the Warpcore
were not up and going).

Re: [EVDL] 15th Annual ELECTRIC CAR RALLY

2013-04-13 Thread Steve Clunn
From: EVDL Administrator
One thing about it puzzles me. In the EVAlbum entry I see :
Batteries : Batteries 12, 0.00 Volt,

This should be 12 3.2 volt china HiPower cells and 6 very old
Valance 12v 135 ah Lion batteries that have the same foot print as a
golf cart battery . So the voltage is closer to 108 , There is no
real plan for the battery set up , just use what is laying around , I
have a separate Anderson plug on each set so each group can be charged
separately . The truck will be a kind of test bed , evaluation , and
rehab center for old batteries .

I vaguely remember someone on this list many years ago proposing to convert
a V6 or V8 car by gutting the engine and fitting a small motor to each
cylinder. He wanted to link all the motors together in the crankcase,
then use a right angle drive to connect to the trans.

I remember that to , I believe it was magnets for the pistons and
coils in the top and bottom of cylinders set to repel or pull the
magnet pistons , a timing circuit would turn off and on the coils
Thanks Dave for keeping the details straight and Brush for the web
history on my car show.

[EVDL] Audrey's HULK

2013-04-12 Thread Steve Clunn
I was in Oklahoma working and just as a lark sent Audrey a picture of
this 1956 Ford F500 that I saw on the side of the road for sale. She
was smitten with the truck immediately, and much to my surprise,
wanted to buy it ! In my mind, it was a little too far since I
like to pick vehicles that only need the conversion work done. But,
she was so excited about and my joke of I got you the perfect Birthday
Present it became a reality.
I am quite a lucky guy because where most guys have to beg their wives
to do a project like this, I just have to say yes, dear, whatever
you want ! lol. We have gone back and forth on will it be a rat
rod or primo'd out as a restoration. Can't be both since rat rods
are kind of free styled, but they shouldn't be painted, original paint
and rust is almost a must. Rat Roders also pride themselves on
spending little money and using used parts. As it turned out, the
motor was made from 3 different parts of Net Gains 9 Warp electric
motors hanging around the shop, the Zilla Controller might be one of
the very first I ever bought and it has been in more cars than I can
remember ! The Hulk is still evolving and the new twist is it may get
some old battery boxes from some of my early conversions. We are
moving, since the place we are renting got sold. I have been renting
for 9 years and in that time the 5 acres has accumulated many cars! (
I think 26, but don't tell Audrey). Some of the early cars had been
upgraded by the people who had bought them, but the old shells hung
out in the woods here. My Ford Ranger ( Clunn car 3 and Clunn car 4
the Hyundi ) are headed toward the crusher. I decided to cut the
battery boxes out of those and with the large area under the Hulk
there is plenty of room to fashion these in there. I have been using
the Hulk to pull these cars out of the woods. It has a grannie gear in
it that gives it about a 10mph top speed and pulling cars of the
ground with this Beast is just too much fun ! Its a thrilling
experience ! This thing IS BIG... 22.5 tries and with the big dual
wheels on the back give plenty of pull. I made a boom, using a
Triumph Spit Fire frame and a chain wench. Its a bitter sweet
experience, but you can't take it with you. We are moving 200 miles
away. Next on the chopping block is going to be the Ford Explorer. (
