RE: Delivery to Alternate MX Records

2003-09-09 Thread Robert Moir
The people you have spoken to are crack smoking maniacs, not an ISP support team.
4xx is a temporary error. This is an invitation to try again later. This is what you
have.

5.xx would be a fatal error; give up sending email bub it ain't going to happen. You'd
see this if they'd deleted the mail accounts, blocked you from sending, whatever.

To the best of my knowledge the only time that exchange or any other mail system
"should" look for the next MX record is if it fails to connect to the first one. Not
if it connects just fine and then gets told to try again later or sod off.

Subject: Delivery to Alternate MX Records

Hi All,
I'm a bit puzzled by something and I'm hoping that someone can help out.
There's a particular domain, seanet.com, that we can't send messages to at the moment.
Any message sent to this domain hangs in the IMC queue with the error, 452 4.3.0
Cannot write message to disk. According to this ISP's support group they've recently
reconfigured their main mail server so it can no longer receive messages from the
outside world, and I assume that the error we're seeing is a result of this
reconfiguration. They further claim that our server should try to deliver messages to
their second or third mail server, something it definitely isn't doing.

So here are my questions. Should an Exchange server (5.5, by the way) try the
next MX record after getting a 452 from the primary server, and are there any settings
in Exchange that affect this behavior? As an additional philosophical question, does
it strike anyone else as strange that they should deliberately put an essentially
malfunctioning server at the address of their first MX record in the name of spam
fighting and security?

Jason,

I did find the article in the end, IIRC you transposed some of the numbers
in the article ID.

IIRC the article is more in reference to a bug in the SIS component, where a
message received by multiple users on the same store is modified by one or
more users and the size / references are not updated correctly (or something
like that). It certainly could be one of the problems we are having,
however the level of corruption (in the order of several hundred thousand
messages in one store alone) points to something more fundamental.

It wasn't a premier article. I had pulled up the article when I sent
the e-mail but now I can't find it either. It's not even on the list of
bugs that the rollup hotfix addresses.

Basically the mailbox size in ESM is different than what outlook tells
the user and when you run an isinteg the mailbox size in ESM is larger,
more accurate to what outlook says it is.

Sorry I didn't send the full link initially

Subject: Strange behaviour after running ISINTEG

All,

Recently we have been having some strange behaviours with user
mailboxes, such as users being denied access to folders in their
mailboxes, rules disappearing etc. After running ISINTEG on all stores
(approx 20), a number of errors were found and fixed...all good so far.
After remounting the stores everything looked fineuntil the next
morning when people came back to work.

A number of mailboxes had suddenly a LOT more mail in their inboxes and
deleted items folders, some users over 200mb worth, which threw a lot of
the organisation over the store limits and stopped them sending and
receiving mail. We temporarily increased the store limits to cope with
the problem, however we are still at a loss to explain what happened.

After speaking with PSS, they are also at a bit of a loss as well. I've
also checked Technet and other online resources, but no mention is made
of this sort of problem.

- Some users had no effect on their mailboxes
- Some users had lots of mail return to either their deleted items or
inbox (we are surmising that the way the message was originally deleted
has determined where it came back to - shift-delete - back to inbox,
deleted via deleted items - back to delete items).
- The restored messages don't seem to be from the previous days. In all
of the cases we have confirmed, messages deleted the couple of days
previous didn't come back, but messages deleted prior to that did come
back.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before and could possibly explain what
happened ? As with all of these things, the people most affected were
senior management, and they are screaming for a satisfactory response.

Config:
Windows 2000 SP2 with hotfixes
Exchange 2000 SP2 - 6 Servers, 2 badly affected, 1 with minor effects, 3
not affected at all Trend Scanmail installed on all servers 1 Storage
group on each server, between 2 and 4 databases per storage group

On the servers that were affected, only one or two of the 4 stores was
affected.

As far as we can determine, either Exchange wasn't properly cleaning out
deleted items from mailboxes (but was reducing the size of mailboxes as
users were under the mailbox limit cap until the messages were
restored), OR something happened and exchange replayed some of the
transaction logs restoring old messages (but in that case all of the
stores in the storage group should have been affected, but weren't)

Thoughts ?

TIA

Glenn Corbett

RE: CAL for shared mailbox?

2003-09-09 Thread Nick Field
Ummm...
You need a Client Access License for every Client that Accesses the
server.

AFAIK, the client is defined as the machine that the client software is
installed on - Therefore if you run multiple instances if client software on
a single machine, one CAL will cover it. Similarly, if you use a single
piece of client software to open multiple mailboxes/resources on the same
server, a single CAL would suffice.

As always though - If you have queries about Microsoft licensing (or any
other licensing for that matter), for a definitive answer - Ask the license
supplier.

CAL = Client Access License, so its geared to the number of clients you
have, not the number of mailboxes. As long as the clients accessing the
Exchange server are licensed (eg running a licensed copy of Outlook), you
should be covered.

Hopefully this isn't to much of a newbie question.

I do scheduling for a variety of techs, And I manage their calendars via
"Open other users folder" under file open. Is there a way to create a
shortcut to the respective users calendar?

Re: Strange behaviour after running ISINTEG

2003-09-09 Thread Steve
Glenn,

I have seen this exact issue as well and the SIS hotfix does resolve it
(after applying it and then running ISINTEG on each DB). When you run
ISINTEG without the fix it will temporarily resolve the discrepancy
between the "real" mailbox size and what is reported (thus the sudden
mailbox size increases), but it will come back until the SIS hf is
applied.

RE: Delivery to Alternate MX Records

2003-09-09 Thread Durkee, Peter
Thanks for your comments everyone. As of this morning, the mail is flowing again so
they must have come to their senses overnight.

That's an interesting tidbit about spammers prefering the alternate servers. I'd never
heard that before, but it makes sense.

Not to mention too many places spend mucho lucre on protecting their main MX from spam
and viruses and suchlike, then nominate a completely unfiltered secondary at their ISP
which of course doesn't have all their carefully crafted filters on it.

Not only are they breaking their email, they are doing it for naught. Spammers
often PREFER to use a target's second or third MX host. That way, their deluge doesn't
have to compete with every one else's traffic.

The people you have spoken to are crack smoking maniacs, not an ISP support
team. 4xx is a temporary error. This is an invitation to try again later. This is what
you have.

5.xx would be a fatal error; give up sending email bub it ain't going to
happen. You'd see this if they'd deleted the mail accounts, blocked you from sending,
whatever.

To the best of my knowledge the only time that exchange or any other mail
system "should" look for the next MX record is if it fails to connect to the first
one. Not if it connects just fine and then gets told to try again later or sod off.

Subject: Delivery to Alternate MX Records

Hi All,
I'm a bit puzzled by something and I'm hoping that someone can help
out. There's a particular domain, seanet.com, that we can't send messages to at the
moment. Any message sent to this domain hangs in the IMC queue with the error, 452
4.3.0 Cannot write message to disk. According to this ISP's support group they've
recently reconfigured their main mail server so it can no longer receive messages from
the outside world, and I assume that the error we're seeing is a result of this
reconfiguration. They further claim that our server should try to deliver messages to
their second or third mail server, something it definitely isn't doing.

So here are my questions. Should an Exchange server (5.5, by the way)
try the next MX record after getting a 452 from the primary server, and are there any
settings in Exchange that affect this behavior? As an additional philosophical
question, does it strike anyone else as strange that they should deliberately put an
essentially malfunctioning server at the address of their first MX record in the name
of spam fighting and security?

What do you mean by something wrong. MOM by default has most of the

place and configure to the Alerts. My limited experience with the
product makes me want to wait for a promised newer version from MS.

Exchange 5.5 questions

2003-09-09 Thread Scott Weston
I am looking for some software to integrate into my Exchange 5.5 environment
that will allow me to send duplicate emails sent from any user to their
assigned manager. Basically we have several people in the building who are
abusing the company's Electronic Communications policy. We would like to
track any emails sent from their account to be duped into their managers
inbox. I don't think Exchange has this built-in. I do know it has it for
incoming mail and I can specify multiple recipients for incoming but not for
outgoing mail. Also would like to know of software to create better backups
for the Exchange 5.5 environment. Currently if a user gets mail and hard
deletes it off the system then it never gets backed up at the nightly run,
same thing goes for sent mail. Do you know of software to eliminate that
circumvention as well? I know there is software out there to do that... just
don't know who makes it or what it is called.

Thanks.

Anyhow, most ISP's are now blocking port 135. So the solution is VPN or OWA.

building who are abusing the company's Electronic Communications policy.
We would like to track any emails sent from their account to be duped
into their managers inbox. I don't think Exchange has this built-in. I

RE: Delivery to Alternate MX Records

I believe it should use the secondary MX if it can't connect to the
primary. Your problem is because it actually connects successfully and
then drops the connection because of their [mis]configuration.

Subject: Delivery to Alternate MX Records

Hi All,
I'm a bit puzzled by something and I'm hoping that someone can help out.
There's a particular domain, seanet.com, that we can't send messages to
at the moment. Any message sent to this domain hangs in the IMC queue
with the error, 452 4.3.0 Cannot write message to disk. According to
this ISP's support group they've recently reconfigured their main mail
server so it can no longer receive messages from the outside world, and
I assume that the error we're seeing is a result of this
reconfiguration. They further claim that our server should try to
deliver messages to their second or third mail server, something it
definitely isn't doing.

So here are my questions. Should an Exchange server (5.5, by the way)
try the next MX record after getting a 452 from the primary server, and
are there any settings in Exchange that affect this behavior? As an
additional philosophical question, does it strike anyone else as strange
that they should deliberately put an essentially malfunctioning server
at the address of their first MX record in the name of spam fighting and
security?

Subject: Re: Delivery to Alternate MX Records

IMNSHO their logic is screwed. The MX records work as follows

Get me a list of MX records for the domain seanet.com [done]
Can I connect to highest priority MX record ?
Yes = try and send the email
No = try next MX record

Under Yes, if having trouble sending email , exchange server retries but
because server can always connect to highest priority MX record, it will
keep choosing to use that one until the message holding peroid for your
exchange server times it out and sends the message back to the server.

The people at seanet.com need to block port 25 for their server with the
highest priority MX record. this will then force the exchange server to
use the next available MX record.

Whilst not exactly explained see

ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc2821.txt
and
http://www.rfc-editor.org

for a 452 error your sherver should be (and is ) reacting as follows

4yz Transient Negative Completion reply
The command was not accepted, and the requested action did not
occur. However, the error condition is temporary and the action
may be requested again. The sender should return to the beginning
of the command sequence (if any). It is difficult to assign a
meaning to "transient" when two different sites (receiver- and
sender-SMTP agents) must agree on the interpretation. Each reply
in this category might have a different time value, but the SMTP
client is encouraged to try again. A rule of thumb to determine
whether a reply fits into the 4yz or the 5yz category (see below)
is that replies are 4yz if they can be successful if repeated
without any change in command form or in properties of the sender
or receiver (that is, the command is repeated identically and the
receiver does not put up a new implementation.)

Outlook and OWA clients slow after restore of Exchange 2000 Server

2003-09-09 Thread Anciso, Roy
Hello,

I am currently encountering problems with our Outlook and OWA clients connecting to
exchange after a restore of our Exchange 2000 server. After the restore Outlook
clients continuously receive a window that informs the user that “Outlook is
retrieving data from the Microsoft Exchange server”. We have also noticed that OWA
performance is very slow. On occasion messages that are selected for reply receive a
page not found.

Our exchange server setup is as follows:

Exchange 2000 SP3 and post sp3 fixes applied

Windows 2000 with SP4

Exchange is installed on a member server

A Domain controller is located on the same network as the Exchange server

We also have a domain controller at a remote location connected via T1

Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

Thanks in advance

Roy Anciso

2003-09-09 Thread Anciso, Roy
We only did a restore of exchange in ntbackup. The same computer name, and ip where
configured. We basically downed the existing server unplugged it from the network,
reset the computer account and brought up a new server with the same name rejoined to
domain and restored exchange.

We only did a restore of exchange in ntbackup. The same computer name,
and ip where configured. We basically downed the existing server
unplugged it from the network, reset the computer account and brought up
a new server with the same name rejoined to domain and restored
exchange.

Server
Date: Tue, 9 Sep 2003 13:40:55 -0400

Hello,

I am currently encountering problems with our Outlook and OWA clients
connecting to exchange after a restore of our Exchange 2000 server.
After
the restore Outlook clients continuously receive a window that informs
the
user that "Outlook is retrieving data from the Microsoft Exchange
server".
We have also noticed that OWA performance is very slow. On occasion
messages that are selected for reply receive a page not found.

Our exchange server setup is as follows:

Exchange 2000 SP3 and post sp3 fixes applied

Windows 2000 with SP4

Exchange is installed on a member server

A Domain controller is located on the same network as the Exchange
server

We also have a domain controller at a remote location connected via T1

Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

Thanks in advance

Roy Anciso

Relaying problem (not quite sure)

2003-09-09 Thread Jerry J.
Exchange 5.5. I have relaying restricted to only my internal network.
There are a few domains that I had to allow to relay to. Example, system
somewhere remote needs to send an alert. The computer connects to my SMTP
server over the net and tries to send the alert and hits a wall. I enter
in mydomain.com to ignore restrictions and all is well. But the systems
manager at the remote site wants the e-mail as well so I enter his domain
to ignore restrictions and all is well. Tested it and if there is any
other domain in the e-mail list for the alert, the entire thing gets
dumped and no one is alerted. This is what I wanted.
So back to the problem, I am seeing since last week alot of NDR's sent to
my postmasters mailbox that (somerandomgarbage)@mydomain.com could not be
delivered. Most of them come from AOL addresses. Now am I being relayed
thru?
What should I look at first? From my slight knowledge I am secured from
relaying because I cannot get a remote machine to relay thru my server.
But I know there is always a way.

RE: Outlook and OWA clients slow after restore of Exchange 2000 Server

2003-09-09 Thread Tony Hlabse
The OWA part I can understand as it is acting like a user hits the webserver
for the first time. There are ways to speed up. Look at the OWA papers for
E2K. The other sounds like a network issue possible. Guessing here different
MAC addresses in the switches memory possible cause.

Hi,

If I remove the M:\ drive, because we do not need it, outside of the
services stopping and starting will client have any impact? Lost email,
attachments, etc. I have not seen anything regarding this but wanted to
ask the masses.

Thanks in advance,

PST Problem

2003-09-09 Thread Guy Stewart
I have a user that is a exchange environment. Everytime she uses her local
address book to send a e-mail, her outlook shuts down. Also
I have a user that has a 1.7gb .PST file, that is corrupted. Is 1.7gb to big
for a PST file ? Also is a way to repair that file?

Thanks

RE: PST Problem

2003-09-09 Thread Martin Blackstone
When you say local address book, do you mean a .PAB?

Also, 1.7 GB is pretty darn big for a PST. Search the HD for Scanpst.exe and
run it a bunch of times. Then retire that PST. They typically start to
corrupt when they go over a gig though the limit is 2.

No but it's getting close. 2GB is the limit (soon
to be increased) before you are sure to have problems.. Try using scanpst.exe to
repair the file OR check
out http://www.slipstick.com for more Outlook help. Run it a few
times, pull out what you need and start over. Slipstick is a handy
site for Outlook issues.
