RE: 2003 to 2010 migration issues

The problem was fixed with inheriting permissions from parent on the exchange
2003 mailboxes. That fixed both issues I was having. Thanks for helping me
think this through.

Is the email address you're sending to a mailbox on a 2010 database, or is it
to a mail-enabled public folder?
Is the HT part of the same AD site as the mailbox server?

Do the Exchange 2010 users get bounces sending to 2003?

Do the Exchange 2003 smtp logs show anything?

As far as your OWA redirect, you can use whatever you'd like for the legacy URL
as long as it's valid and covered by the same SSL cert as your Exchange 2010
OWA url. This means you need to use either a wildcard or a UCC/SAN cert.

Hi,

The migration process is moving along nicely except for two issues.

1. Exchange 2003 users can send to Exchange 2010 but not vice versa. The
routing group connectors look good.

2. My owa legacy redirect is not working properly. The DNS name doesn't
really have to be legacy.domain.com does it? I'd like to leave it so I don't
break everyones https connection. When I get to the CAS login, if I put in
credentials for a exchange 2003 box, it just goes to a white page.

Could these issues be related? Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

into the 2003 account, it takes me to a blank page with this URL:
https://webmail.domain.com/owa/auth.owa. Webmail.domain.com is my
mail.contoso.com.
I will review the link you provided.

On my bridgehead CAS, I get warnings for exchange not finding the around to the
mailbox database CN=Public Folder Store...but I am not going to use that so I
am disregarding this warning.
On my BE 2003 server, I get errors on OAB only.

The 2010 users go not get bounces. I think it may have gotten a delayed
message but I am not certain. I did no much testing that I cannot recall. I
do not see anything in the 2003 smtp logs.

These are likely two different issues.
Do the Exchange 2010 users get bounces sending to 2003?
What do those say?

TIA

Jimmy

No you read it right. I suggested appropriate nat rules from firewall to Cas
array and he wants to put cas in dmz.

With his design my servers don't like it. With mine everything is happy

appropriate traffic from the Internet directly to your CAS servers in the
trusted zone instead of having your CAS servers in the DMZ?

Re: 2010 migration

2013-03-27 Thread Richard Stovall
I think I misread your question. Are you saying firewall rules which
direct appropriate traffic from the Internet directly to your CAS servers
in the trusted zone instead of having your CAS servers in the DMZ?

It is NOT SUPPORTED to put CAS in the DMZ.

If you do not want to expose Exchange directly to the internet, then use a

Subject: Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 Migration Issues

Hello,

I am working on an Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 migration. This is a single
domain and single exchange organization migration. I have all of the updates
installed for Exchange 2010. We have started migrating some mailboxes over to
Exchange 2010. However, we still have some users on Exchange 2003. The issue
that I am having is that when a shared mailbox is moved over to the Exchange
2010 server, users are not able to access it. The only way that I can get them
to access it is to change the mode on their Outlook client to cached exchange
and remove their access from the mailbox and add it back in again. They are
using Outlook 2003 SP3. Another scenario that I have is that if a shared
mailbox is left on the exchange 2003 server and a couple of users are still on
exchange 2003, they can access it fine. However, a user on Exchange 2010 cannot
access it unless they are switched to cached exchange and removed from the
security group and then re-added. Any pointers would be great as I am stumped
at the moment. I have workarounds, but I should not have to be doing these
workarounds.

Thanks,

Chris

I've followed Michael Smith's article Migrating from 2003 to 2010. I left the
2003 box sit for several months without issue.
I believe I've completed all the required steps except for the public folder
database, Routing Group Connector and the RUS.

Currently in the 2003 ESM Public Folder Instances container I see
StoreEvents{GUID}. The properties of which only show the Exchange 2010 server
in Replicas.
Also I see in First Admin Group > Public Folders > System Configuration has a
replica of the Exch 2003 server, but when I attempt to remove the Exch 2003 it
asks for a password but doesn't accept the Admin password to remove the replica.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thank you in advance.

RE: 2003 to 2010 Migration: Removing Public Folder Problem

2012-07-16 Thread Michael B. Smith
This usually means that you still have the Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000/2003
ADC migration tool installed (or in your AD).

Subject: 2003 to 2010 Migration: Removing Public Folder Problem

Joseph Danielsen

RE: Exchange 2010 migration, removing old public folders

2012-03-14 Thread Tobie Fysh
Sorry - replication was staying static, had already added the replication back
in for the two Public Folders that have not got cleaned up by the
MoveAllReplicas script. Example:

'07 server 100 items
'10 server 110 items

Add an item to the 2010 PF and item count increases by 1 on each so would now
show:

'07 server 101 items
'10 server 111 items

The same happens if I add an item on the 2007 server (it gets replicated to the
2010 server).

Tobie

So as I have some public folders on the 2007 box which are not getting updated
anymore do I

1.add them back in to replication (by using AddReplicaToPFRecursive on the
2010 server)

2.wait for the item counts to get back in sync

3.use RemoveReplicaFromPFRecursive on the 2010

4.wait for Get-PublicFolderStatistics to show nothing on the 2007 server

5.remove the 2007 public folders.

They can be another kettle of fish.

Compared to Exchange 2010, Exchange 2003 was stupid. It allowed invalid values.
This can cause PF replication to fail and on the Exchange 2010 message for PF
repl messages to end up as poison message. So... you may have to turn off
poison message detection on the 2010 side.

Yes, I'd still avoid MoveAllReplicas. But for everything else - I'd do the

Hi all,

Exchange 2007 server being decommissioned as all users move to new Exchange
2010 server.

Only database left on it is the Public Folders.

Ran the MoveAllReplicas.ps1 script and most folders have now moved over.

When I run Get-PublicFolderStatistics on the '07 server two folders remain.

They have been there for 4 days now and the item count is staying static.

As this server has no one on is there anyway of killing the EDB without
affecting the other replica? Thinking dismount and then ADSI edit..?

RE: Exchange 2010 migration, removing old public folders

2012-03-08 Thread Kennedy, Jim
I got tired of googling and ADSI deleted the offending database and then
decommissioned the server. So far after 30 minutes no problems.

2012-03-08 Thread Michael B. Smith
I don't care how much Microsoft documentation recommends it, I have never had
anything but trouble with MoveAllReplicas.

I recommend using AddReplicaToPFRecursive, waiting until the replicas have
sync'ed, and then use RemoveReplicaFromPFRecursive.

There have been one or two times when I've HAD to remove the PF store manually.
But they are few and far between. And it isn't one of those things that I tell
people how to do. And most of the blogs out there that pretend to, forget at
least one or two steps.

2003 BE problems during 2003-2010 Migration

2011-10-24 Thread Brian McGloin
It's Monday :/

We are early in our Exchange 2003 to 2010 migration.
This past week we started pointing all TMG traffic (Activesync, OWA, and RPC
over HTTPS) to our 2010 CAS array.
It used to point this traffic directly to our 2003 FEs.

When pointing to our 2003 FEs, we had just recently been having problems
with the non paged pool memory creeping upwards of 110,000KB and then our
mobile users would have problems (inboxes would load continuously - mostly
iOS devices).
I had thought this was due to load and that the migration of the traffic
through the CAS array would mitigate the problem.

Well, it seems to have shifted the problem.
Now, on one of our BEs (5800 users), it takes about 1/2 day for the non
paged pool memory to rise, then BAM, the same problem occurs.

Has anyone else run into anything like this?

Thx in advance

It's used by the test-* cmdlets. You need to create a new one on the new server

In Exchange 2007, a mailbox was setup on installation named CAS_{..stuff..}.
When I setup 2010, the new server didn't create a similar mailbox. Do I need to
migrate this mailbox over to the 2010 server before I decommission the 2007
server, or can I get rid of it? I've searched this to death, and I can't find
an answer...

RE: 2010 migration

2011-07-06 Thread Wayne Dueck
Created a new Public Folder, assigned it to the mailbox databases and the new
meeting requests now work. Exchange 2010 must still have a dependancy on public
folders. Don't know what a blank public folder has to do with booking a
resource but it works.

RE: 2010 migration

2011-07-06 Thread Wayne Dueck
The migration went very well. Would of been a non-event if I hadn't forgotten
about an internal firewall between our Oracle and Exchange servers but . . . .
today I am dismantling our 2007 systems and deleted the public folder because
it was only for Blackberry offline address book. Shortly after that, I started
getting phone calls about end users not being able to book conference rooms.
The error is -
Direct Booking
Cannot directly book a resource for this meeting.
I have Google'd it and found that if you mount the DB that holds the PF
everything is ok but I can't do that. I thought that Exchange 2007 didn't use
PF but there must be some tie to them still. Does anyone have any suggestions
on how to fix this?
Thanks in advance.

With Windows backup I had to backup the Active DB in our CCR cluster. Our 2010
plan is to have 2 DB copies onsite and one in a DR site. All of our Exchange
2010 servers are on VMware and we snapshot them nightly. Also, we use Quest's
Archive Manager so we have a copy of all mail there. That's our backup plan.

RE: 2010 migration

2011-07-01 Thread Campbell, Rob
It's not "suicide" to back up an active db, but you can run into problems
backing up the target db of a mass migration while the migration is going on.

Backup suspends committing log files to the DB while the backup is running.
Exchange has a threshold of the maximum number of uncommitted log files it will
allow. If it exceeds that number, it dismounts the database. Normally you
won't ever exceed that, but migrations generate massive amounts of log files on
the target db, and you can end up having the db dismount in the middle of your
migration if you try to run a backup while it's going on. DAMHIKT.

Sorry to hijack the thread but conitnuing on the thread of backup, is it
suicidal to backup the active db?

Problem we run into in our environemtn as we plan out migration to 2010 is that
we have one prod site & one DR site & our backup library & mgmt console both
reside in prod.

So, in other to perform 2010 backup either we'd have to spin up another server
hosting all the passive mb db's or cough up extra $$ to set up a backup
enviroement in our DR site to backup the passive db's.

I understand best practice is to backup passive db's but what is everyone doing
in a situation such as ours, which I assume is quite a common setup.

We are overprovisioning our Ex2k10 setup to use 10K RPM SAS disks/8 core
proc's/36GB RAM on 2 mb servers hosting some 4000 mb's averaging 300mb each
(which is more than what the mailbox calculator recommends) but I'm still not
not sold that we wont run into potential performancne issues if we were to
backup the active db's. Any thoughts?

As far as I'm concerned, the only reason to backup the passive copies is to
ensure log truncation happens properly on the active copy when the backup is
finished. Now, this may just be unique to our backup solution (Legato /

Re: 2010 migration

2011-07-01 Thread David Liu
Sorry to hijack the thread but conitnuing on the thread of backup, is it
suicidal to backup the active db?

Problem we run into in our environemtn as we plan out migration to 2010 is
that we have one prod site & one DR site & our backup library & mgmt console
both reside in prod.

So, in other to perform 2010 backup either we'd have to spin up another
server hosting all the passive mb db's or cough up extra $$ to set up a
backup enviroement in our DR site to backup the passive db's.

I understand best practice is to backup passive db's but what is everyone
doing in a situation such as ours, which I assume is quite a common setup.

We are overprovisioning our Ex2k10 setup to use 10K RPM SAS disks/8 core
proc's/36GB RAM on 2 mb servers hosting some 4000 mb's averaging 300mb each
(which is more than what the mailbox calculator recommends) but I'm still
not not sold that we wont run into potential performancne issues if we were
to backup the active db's. Any thoughts?

If you can, allocate more log file space on the 2010 servers while you're doing
the migration, and monitor it, or turn on circular logging until you're done
migrating. Moving mailboxes generates lots of transactions and lots of logs.
Also be sure you don't have any backups of the 2010 servers scheduled while the
migration is running.

Hello,
We are migrating our mailboxes from 2007 to 2010 and I was looking into a
powershell command to simlify things. I google'd it and found scripts that had
alot of confusing language. (I'm not a programmer). What I have come up with is
- Get-Mailbox -Database | New-MoveRequest -TargetDatabase

and I was wondering if this is all that's needed. Appears to work in my test
lab. Should I add any parameters? Any other advice?
Thanks in advance.

RE: Exchange 2003/2010 migration - disk access question

2011-06-26 Thread Michael B. Smith
We don't have detailed internals on MRS.

To the best of my knowledge, you may or may not have writes with steps one and
two due to buffer flushes (i.e., memory stress requiring a buffer to be written
to disk). In a non-stressed environment, I would expect none.

Your best area of control is handling the number of moves-in-progress.

queues be positioned better? Is there an actual write to these queues?

If this is 2010-sp1 then step 5 doesn't happen. Logs are sent via TCP
write-by-write to the destination DAG server [part of step 3] (until or if that
connection is broken, in which case normal log transport takes over).

What you are presenting as a single read/write may be multiple read/writes.

If you can only do 5 at a time, then only do 5 at a time. By default you can
only do 5 per CAS, but you can control that to some degree. See

I have a 2003/2010 mixed environment. I have moved a bunch of mailboxes
successfully between the two (both ways). I still have a bunch to move from
2003->2010. What I need to do is optimize the disk writes/reads for the data as
it moves. When I move too many mailboxes at time the system keeps getting to
the 95% point, and then can't quite seem to complete the move in a timely
manner. If I limit the move to under 5 mailboxes at the same time, it goes
well...

So, the question is, what all disk reads/writes occur on the 2010 side as a
mailbox move occurs?

My environment:
2003 - multiple servers
2007 - One Front End/One Mailbox (these are there only because I was doing some
testing - and users are now using the 2007 OWA as a front end to the 2003
OWA).

2010 - Two Mailbox/Transport/DAG servers. Two CAS/Transport. One External Edge
Transport.

The CAS servers seem to be doing the actual moves from 2003, or are at least in
charge. Do they actually write the data to disk at any point?

The MBX servers get the data, write it to the local queue???, then post it to
the log volume, and then to the database. It then reads the changes, and pushes
it to the inactive DAGs, who write it to the local queue, logs, and then
database, right?

So:
1) CAS queue Write/read
2) MBX1 - queue Write/read
3) MBX1 - log Write
4) MBX1 - DB Write/Read
5) MBX2 - queue Write/Read
6) MBX2 - log Write
7) MBX2 - DB Write

So, I see 11 Reads/Writes total? Do I have too many? Am I missing any? Can
this be optimized in any way? Am I way off base?

Thanks

2011-04-08 Thread Simon Butler
Standard test to begin with.
Can you telnet to the other server on port 25 and get a response?

You should be able to telnet using the IP address and the server name.

No connectors required, the servers should just see each other.

Have you touched the receive connectors at all? This could be an authentication
issue.
Do you see the messages in the queue viewer? If so, what does the error code
say?

Simon.

Subject: Exchange 2007 to 2010 migration issue.

I installed Exchange 2010 (2 CAS/HUBs and 2 MBX servers) into our existing
Exchange 2010 organization.

After some configuration, I've added a database and mailbox on the 2010
servers. I can open the mailbox using Outlook Web, and send an outbound email
though our gateway to gmail and get it ok. I can also can see all the2007
mailboxes on the 2010 server.

However, I cannot send any emails from a 2010 mailbox to a 2007 mailbox or the
other way.

I must be missing a setting. Anyone have any thoughts on what to check?

Thanks,
Andy

RE: Exchange 2010 migration from Exchange 2003 -- routing group connectors need to be added manually

2011-03-10 Thread Michael B. Smith
If you install using the command line (setup.com) you must specify a
LegacyRoutingServer during the installation of the first hub transport in order
for the RGC to be created automatically.

If you use the GUI, you must select at least one Exchange 2003 server as the
legacy routing server in order for the RGC to be created.

Subject: Exchange 2010 migration from Exchange 2003 -- routing group connectors
need to be added manually

In Michael Smith's excellent documentation on the migration from Exchange 2003
to Exchange 2010, there is no specific mention of having to manually create a
bidirectional routing group connector between Exchange 2003 and 2010 servers,
however in practice this has been necessary.

Technet describes the command at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998574.aspx

Is there some step along the way that I may have missed that would create this
connector automagically?

RE: Exchange 2010 Migration Planning - Database Size?

2011-03-09 Thread Paul Hutchings
Thanks all. Sounds like RPO/RTO is the key then assuming I'm not
planning on using 1tb DB's or anything that would be slightly crazy.

I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as I read more docs.

Thanks,

Paul

The database size recommendations are based on your RTO. If you're
relying on tape backup, keep the DBs under 200GB. If you have more than
3 copies of your DBs in a DAG, than the size recommendations will grow.
Read this http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/11/09/453117.aspx and
download the storage calculator.

I've been getting conflicting suggestions on the sensible maximum
database size to use when we go to Exchange 2010.

Initially we should be going with a single HT/CAS/MBX box with a view to
perhaps bringing in a DAG pretty soon.

Some people are suggesting 200gb is the biggest they'd let a single
database grow to, some MS docs suggest 2tb.

If I split our users across three databases we'd be well under 200gb per
database but if we increase mailbox quotas we may stray above.

Assuming proper storage/lots of IOPS/spindles etc. what is the "sweet
spot"?

Between SAN snapshots and our backup software I'm not expecting RTO/RPO
to be a significant issue.

Exchange 2010 migration from Exchange 2003 -- routing group connectors need to be added manually

2011-03-08 Thread Stuart Brainerd
In Michael Smith's excellent documentation on the migration from Exchange
2003 to Exchange 2010, there is no specific mention of having to manually
create a bidirectional routing group connector between Exchange 2003 and
2010 servers, however in practice this has been necessary.

Technet describes the command at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998574.aspx

Is there some step along the way that I may have missed that would create
this connector automagically?

regards,
Stuart Brainerd

Depends on your content. If you have few databases and lots of
large attachments, it could grow quite a bit.

I generally use 20% as a planning figure. That being said, most
people are also increasing mailbox size as part of their move to
Exchange 2010, so even if it's quite a bit more, it gets "lost in the

The one thing I haven't seen much on so far is database growth

Re: Exchange 2010 Migration Planning - Database Size?

2011-03-08 Thread Harry Singh
I've read documentation indicating a fine tuned deleted
item retention policy and an enforceable mailbox quota policy should be
considered when looking at DB sizing as well.

Disclaimer: I'm not an exchange expert and currently have 3 DB's all under
200GB each. Also, interested in how other admins configure their deleted
item retention policy if different than the standard 30 day period.

2011-03-08 Thread Sean Martin
The database size recommendations are based on your RTO. If you're relying
on tape backup, keep the DBs under 200GB. If you have more than 3 copies of
your DBs in a DAG, than the size recommendations will grow. Read this
http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/11/09/453117.aspx and download the

RE: Exchange 2010 Migration Planning - Database Size?

2011-03-08 Thread Young, Darren
We're trying to stick under 500GB per store. In the event DAG fails and we have
to go to tape, FCP LTO-4 can restore 500GB. It'd blow the RTO but really bad
stuff does happen.

I've been getting conflicting suggestions on the sensible maximum database size
to use when we go to Exchange 2010.

Initially we should be going with a single HT/CAS/MBX box with a view to
perhaps bringing in a DAG pretty soon.

Some people are suggesting 200gb is the biggest they'd let a single database
grow to, some MS docs suggest 2tb.

If I split our users across three databases we'd be well under 200gb per
database but if we increase mailbox quotas we may stray above.

Assuming proper storage/lots of IOPS/spindles etc. what is the "sweet spot"?

Between SAN snapshots and our backup software I'm not expecting RTO/RPO to be a
significant issue.

2010-06-22 Thread Michael B. Smith
Then you have probl^H^H^H^H^H challenges.

You have to do a two-stage upgrade.

You have to get Exchange 2003 off the DC so that you can upgrade the domain to
a more recent FFL/DFL (and, by the way, it is NOT supported to change the
dcpromo status of a computer AFTER Exchange is installed). Once you have
Exchange off the DC, and all DCs can be moved to AT LEAST Windows 2003, you can
bump the DFL/FFL to 2003 and begin the migration to Exchange 2010.

Well, you should spend some time on my blog looking at "Exchange 2010 Gotchas".

Is the server you are running Exchange 2003 on a domain controller?

Afternoon all!

I've just been told that I can finally start to upgrade some older software. I
currently have a Windows 2000 AD and am running E2K3 on a W2K server. I've been
given the green light to upgrade to a Windows 2008 AD and also E2K10.

Anything special I should be watching out for? I'm going to start the research
tomorrow, but thought I would throw out the question to the experts! We may
actually be looking to outsource the Exchange side if someone knows anyone in
the Toronto, Canada area.

Cheers,
Cameron

Exchange 2010 migration question

2010-06-22 Thread Cameron
Afternoon all!

I've just been told that I can finally start to upgrade some older software.
I currently have a Windows 2000 AD and am running E2K3 on a W2K server. I've
been given the green light to upgrade to a Windows 2008 AD and also E2K10.

Anything special I should be watching out for? I'm going to start the
research tomorrow, but thought I would throw out the question to the
experts! We may actually be looking to outsource the Exchange side if
someone knows anyone in the Toronto, Canada area.

Cheers,
Cameron

No, not support with EMW.

Even QMM is not supported for 2010 until April 2010

just wondered what was best solution

RE: Exchange 5.5 - Exchange 2010 Migration

2010-01-26 Thread Pauls Hotmail
Version 8.5 - released in December IIRC still does NOT. It is supposed to be
included in the very next release 8.6, but there's no word when that will be
available yet...

The Quest Migration Suite for Exchange could go from 5.5 to 2007 but I'm not
sure if it has been updated for 2010 yet. Might be worth checking.

Does anyone know the best way to migrate mailboxes from Exchange 5.5 into
Exchange 2010?

Would it be to just pst it all using exmerge?
