I'm running the latest (0.9.17) release, and the RPM is available at

There's an rpm of 0.9.17 available also at the site and it does solve the

 Will any OpenMotif rpm package be available for the next

[expert] Chinese characters problems in 7.0

2000-06-02 Thread Seak, Teng-Fong

 I know Mandrake 7.1 is about to come out, but I hope Mandrake's
developers are still taking this into consideration.

1) During the graphical installation, we can choose amongst several
languages as interface language. However, when Chinese (Big5) is
chosen, the characters aren't displayed correctly. It seems that the
proper font file can't be found/ isn't loaded.

2) There're several TTF for Chinese characters (both simplified and
traditional Chinese). The only application with which I can display
Chinese is Netscape. When I open a page in Chinese, things aren't
displayed correctly. Maybe a problem in encodage, or a mix-up in
traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese.

3) I've installed xcin (btw, it's not available during install
phase. I had to find it in the directory and installed it
afterwards), but it can't be run.

 If you need more info, I will give it to you as soon as I have
reinstalled Linux-Mandrake in my new HD.

 Thanks in advance.

Gavin's method is the simplest method, but the slowest (especially
if it's a large db). Extract the tables into flat files, then
load them into the MySQL db. Since you have many seperate flat
files, you can employ parallelism and load X number of tables
at once. The # of parallel loads should depend on the number
of devices you are spreading the tables across, how many
controllers you use, and how many CPUs. After you load all the
tables, create the indexes in parallel also...

Perhaps I failed to articulate the problem!
This occurs despite security level (low - medium -high).
For this reason I was looking for a "known bug" type of situation.
One would think if the executing program has both seteuid setegid (confirmed)
root that a exec should be performed. However, for some odd reason I can not
track where the denial is originating. I would assume a posibble culprit to be
security system pam. This is a royal pain in the southern hemisphere!

Has anyone observed such untoward behavior?

mysql has a way to export the whole database as a SQL file with all the data
and instructions for building the whole thing from scratch. if MSSQL 7.0 has
a similar export format you're home free. just export from mssql as SQL

Source tarball of 0.9.18 (right--18) is at www.marko.net/gaim

You DL it to your home directory, raise a terminal and

Article 2--Accessing a computer to which he has no right-- If I
fat-finger a ping to the wrong address, have I become a
criminal? If that address doesn't want to be pinged... I have.

Article 6-- Wow, read this ONE in its entirety. Mandrake
includes nmap in the distro and this would make possession of the
tool illegal. It would also strip me of my best security
auditing tool and leave me wide open to the black hats unless I
allowed my hat to become a little grey and buried a CD in my
front yard and hoped the government didn't have metal detectors
when they inspected my site.

They say this is for discussion--go discuss and do so today!1!
Otherwise we will find a need to nourish the roots of the tree of
liberty with the blood of free-speech patriots once again.

This is ten times worse than the digital millenium copyright act
and is an example of a series of governments taking themselves
too seriously and believing they have more power than they could
possibly achieve. The only way they could enforce this is to
dismantle the internet, therefore selective enforcement could
become a political weapon.  ...

One could compare the internet to a 1500 lane superhighway with
on-ramps from everywhere with all its regulations enforced by a
couple of Keystone Kops with broken whistles (and riding rusty
bicycles) while there are 500-man vigilante squads armed with
thermonuclear weapons.

So, let us declare silly season open and see if we can inject a
bit of common sense to this obviously runaway thread on the

The way to not ask for a password, is to cat from the client machine the
~/.ssh/identity.pub to the ~/.ssh/authorized_users file on the server, it will
no longer ask for a password when ssh ing from the client to the server as
that user.

The following command will set this up for you.

ssh -l remoteusername remote.host.com 'cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys'

Yeah, I figured on the permissions part and got expect to work

chmod 700 which I think should be pretty good.

You might want to look into the "expect" command. It allows you to
interact with programs (similar to writing a ppp script). However,
if you will be putting in passwords, of course be VERY careful
with the read-write permissions on the scripts. The man page has
some info, and I'm sure you'd be able to find something out on

Good luck,

Best bet is to check contribs for stuff. If you can't find it there, you
can look at www.freezer-burn.org/rpm.php3 for a few things (everything is
also compiled for i586), but the majority of that is in the main distro or
in contribs.

The other thing you can do is download the source rpm and do a:

rpm -bb --target=i586 *.src.rpm

But then you'll need to have installed any libraries or devel files
something might need to compile.

JesseI haven't found any rpms for the newest release of
gaim either, but here's an alternative for you.

As root I put he below file in my /opt directory and executed
it. I then removed it from the /opt directory and stored it.
In the resulting /opt/aim directory there is a executable
script file called aim. As a user you can link a desktop,
panel, or menu icon to that aim file and a java version of
AOL's aim client will launch on your desktop when you click
that icon.

To remove the whole thing if you don't like it, just delete
the /opt/aim directory and any linked icons you've made.

Re: [expert] Changing the location of a MySQL db?

2000-06-02 Thread Cecil Watson

Thanks for the suggestion. Here is what I did.

Stopped MySQL /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql stop
Made a new data directory.
Copied databases to the new directory.
Check make sure permissions are the same and in the old directory.
Edit /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql (changed datadir=/var/lib/mysql to the new
directory). Note if you installed via source I believe you'd locate my.cnf
(should be under /etc) and make the change there.
Started MySQL /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start

:-)

Say...How can I find what files have been added to my system recently?

RE: [expert] MSSQL 7.0 to MySQL

2000-06-02 Thread Charles Boening

I'm not too familiar with MySQL, but I do believe that there is a Windows
ODBC Driver for it. I've never tried it, but you might check out the MySQL
web site.
With that, you could use MS SQL to export to an ODBC data source.

Another posibility would be to export the data to flat file(s) and then
import to MySQL.

TESTING:
type "depmod -a"
type "modprobe udf",
then "mount -t udf /dev/scd0 /mnt"
(assuming /dev/scd0 is your scsi cdrom)
or
 "mount -t udf -o loop image /mnt"
(Substitute "scd0", "image", and "/mnt" as appropriate
for your system)

2000-06-02 Thread Denis HAVLIK

:~>Could you expand on this "chrooted" operation, or at least tell me
:~>where I can RTFM ??

Sorry, I thought everyone knows this...

[root@localhost denis]# rpm -qf `which chroot `
sh-utils-2.0-6mdk

man page:

CHROOT(1)  FSF  CHROOT(1)

NAME
   chroot - run command or interactive shell with special
   root directory

...

SEE ALSO
   The full documentation for chroot is maintained as a Tex
   info manual. If the info and chroot programs are properly
   installed at your site, the command

  info chroot

   should give you access to the complete manual.

info:

File: sh-utils.info, Node: chroot invocation, Next: env invocation,
Up: Modi\
fied command invocation

`chroot': Run a command with a different root directory
===

   `chroot' runs a command with a specified root directory. On many
systems, only the super-user can do this. Synopses:

 chroot NEWROOT [COMMAND [ARGS]...]
 chroot OPTION

   Ordinarily, filenames are looked up starting at the root of the
directory structure, i.e., `/'. `chroot' changes the root to the
directory NEWROOT (which must exist) and then runs COMMAND with
optional ARGS. If COMMAND is not specified, the default is the value
of the `SHELL' environment variable or `/bin/sh' if not set, invoked
with the `-i' option.

   The only options are `--help' and `--version'. *Note Common
options::.

etc. In my opinion, chroot may be a nice way to fool any future viruses or
trojans. Drawback is that you actually have to install whatever is needed
to read your attachements below this directory, which means that you need
a lot of place for it - it is like having a (subset of) distribution
installed twice. On the other hand, whatever a virus/trojan does it will
do to this "second" system, where it does bother you because it can be
easily detected and repaired, and does not interfere with working of the
system!

If "place" on HD is not a problem, this is absolutely the best way to deal
with executing mail attachements.

Re: [expert] Changing the location of a MySQL db?

2000-06-02 Thread Eric Aksomitis

I guess a quick manual way would be move the files to another partition
and create symbolic links to the new files in their original location.
If you go this route, you'll probably get even better speed if you can
have the indexes and tables on separate physical disks. This is pretty
much the standard in Oracle Set-Ups. Let me know if this works or if
you find a better way (I have some MySql work coming up where I need to
store more data than 1 partition as well)

Obviously, I would backup the data and have MySQL off when trying this.

ask your provider if you need to adjust your MTU values (some

Re: [expert] realplayer for linux

2000-06-02 Thread Eric Aksomitis

I got the one from the web site as well, but it lacked one setting that
took me FOREVER to figure out what it should be. In the applications
section of Netscape, it did NOT set the Real-Audio application to be :
realplay %s
I had to build a perl script and reverse-engineer the correct %?? in
netscape
that would make it work (which is required to easily launch real-audio
from a Yahoo-Broadcast).

Did I miss something obvious that I didn't do to not get that set
automatically?

Maybe Netscape should have been closed while running the install (nmaybe
it edited the config file?)

At any rate, if it does not get set, realplay %s is what I set it to and
it works

I had it on win98.

I thought it may be my modem so I brought it back to Bell

be my nic card so I put it on a new one to no avail.
(I then went back to my 3com 3C509 combo card, No need to)
use a 3c9xx 100meg card for Dsl )

Another problem I am encountering is I can only hit about
thirty to fifty percent of the world and load the full
page through masq on a win98 my windows 98 boxes. I may go
to it but it won't load all the way. I can ping the address's though! I do have my

any ideas would be great:)

  Your gateway address will be the IP of the "inside" networking card,
the
one attached to the hub to which your local network will be connected.
At least that's the way my system is set up and it works.

[expert] Helix-Gnome question - International keyboard?

2000-06-02 Thread Oleksandr Moskalenko

   Hello, experts,

 Please pardon my utter ignorance, but I don't seem to be
able to find equivalent of KDE's keyboard switch in that
slick and shiny new Helix-Gnome I've been running for a
few days now with such pleasure. I need to be able to
write in a different language, but can't find how I switch
the keyboards. It used to be so easy to do in KDE...

  Please advise me on how to do it or point to the "right"
source of knowledge.

  Thank you very much,

  Alex.

This might not be the place but I am in a real bad hurt for some help.

I am trying to compile network adapter card drivers under Mandrake 6.1 running

and none of them will compile with smp kernel. I have read that there is a
problem with the src code in mandrake 6.1.. So what can I do??

Don't bother, go to the 'real' web site and download the linux version of

Re: [expert] PHP help

I set this up using a text file but you'll get the idea save the the
last ip in a field in your database and if the current ip matches the
last one then its the same person and no count is registered. I already
now this works because I'm using it.

$ip = getenv("REMOTE_ADDR");

if ($ip != $data[6]) {
 $dstamp = date(Ymd);
 $wstamp = date(Ymd,mktime(0,0,0,date("m"),date("d")+(7 -
date(w)),date("Y")));
 if ($data[4] < $dstamp) {
$data[2] = 0; $data[4] = $dstamp;
 }
 if ($data[5] < $wstamp) {
$data[3] = 0; $data[5] = $wstamp;
 }
 $data[1]++; $data[2]++; $data[3]++;
 $fp = fopen($file, "w+");
 flock($fp, 2);
 fputs($fp,
"$data[0]|$data[1]|$data[2]|$data[3]|$data[4]|$data[5]|$ip");
 flock($fp, 3);
 fclose($fp);
  }

I take it this is NTFS for NT 3.x or 4.x. Have you done it with NFTS for
W2K? NTFS for W2K is considerably different in its internal structures. I
believe W2K has some calls you can make to NTFS to resize a partition, so
that might be a better way to do it.

I suspect that if PM does not already support W2K NTFS, it will. The
maintainers will also have their hands full with four, counte 'em, four
journaling file systems now or soon to be available for Linux.

[expert] HP Brio

2000-06-02 Thread Lee Willis

Has anyone got any experience of getting the sound card in the HP Brio's
to work under Mandrake. lspcidrake reports it as

Cirrus Logic|CS 4614/22/24 [CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator]

which I understand isn't supported by the default kernel but can be made
to work with the ALSA drivers. I've tried compiling and installing the
packages from the ALSA website (http://www.alsa-project.org) but with no
apparent success (I just seem to get static out of the soundcard!).

I did do it in fits and starts since this is my work machine and I only
get to play when the network is being shifted around or similar.

Anyone got any ideas? GOt it working, thought of something I may have
missed? I've tried playing with various mixers and I can change the
volume of static I get, but no proper sound :( I have a vague idea
that 7.1 includes a sort of ALSA RPM, if this is the case I'll probably
re-install with that, but I can't remember where I got that idea from so
it may just be made up!

Actually, PM gives you several easy options if you trust it, and so far I
have had any trouble with it. Make sure you have a linux boot disk because
if you modify or move the root or boot linux partition lilo can't load the
kernel until you rerun lilo, which finds the new kernel location, and you
need the boot disk to rerun lilo.

1. The "best" option is what Norm recommended: use PM to move (but don't
resize) hda3 and hda4 to the end of the physical hard drive, then expand
hda2 to fill the free space, then you can even use PM to make the swap
partition, hda6, and label it as a linux swap partition. You have to rerun
lilo if you do this, then activate the swap partition from within linux (the
easy newbie way is to use linuxconf).

2. Slightly easier is to use PM to shrink the NTFS partition by 128M or so,
creating space in the extended partition hda2. Then make the swap file in
this space as above. You don't have to rerun lilo, but you waste some space
at the end of your hard drive (the space diskdrake was supposed to use for
the original swap file but couldn't because it would have been the 5th
primary partition).

3. Simply deleting hda5 (NTFS) and hda2 (extended) is also an option, but
you lose NT and you get a swap file which is too big, unnecessarily wasting
disk space. The first two options allow you to keep NT, and I have resized
NT partitions with PM without any trouble (and also linux partitions!).

4. Finally, I agree that reinstalling linux is overkill. Even if you don't
trust PM, you can do option 3 with fdisk.

Good luck,

John

This correct as far as it goes. The firewall has two ip addresses, so the
next question is, which one should he use? The answer is, the IP address
on the local network.

Also, in case he doesn't already know this, if he does not have a range of

his internal network. See RFCs 1597 and 1918. Available networks are:

"!=" is right. try looking at the data to see what you've really got.

also - do you really want to store all those ip addresses for a simple hit
counter? that table could get pretty big and you wouldn't count visitors who
come via proxy servers and gateways (everyone from AOL would count as one
hit) . I'd give the visitor a cookie and increment only if the cookie is not
present. I use this technique to keep people from voting twice in my poll.
the count is a little sloppy because lots of people turn cookies off but
most people leave cookies on and in fact have never heard of them.

cookies are easy:

// test for cookie
if (!$hit) {
//increment counter
$count++;
//set hit cookie
setcookie("hit","Been there!",time() +3600,"/");  /* expire in 1 hour */
}

I had a little trouble getting it running when I compiled my own but I found
an RPM that set it all up right. it's not on the CD though and I can't

have gotten it from a red hat mirror.

to mandrake: for those of us with mac networks appletalk is at least as
important as Samba but it's difficult to find information online about what
you need to set it up. please add the RMPM to your next version.

[expert] ? Loadlin --" not an image file" | OR| bootdisk script

2000-06-02 Thread J. R. Pendley

I have used loadlin before for booting from DOS/Windows as an emergency
solution if lilo was wiped out ( other linux distributions) but when I
tried the same thing for Mdk-7 I get the response from loadlin that
the file I specified is not an image file. The file was a copy of
vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdkfb in the linux /boot directory that I copied to
the mounted DOS partition where I named it vmlinuz. I then exe the
file " loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 ro " Loadlin complains then that
the file is not an image file. The vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdkfb is the one I
boot from LILO so I know its OK in the linux world.

The thing that concerns me is that the file is a large kernel
640+kb. Loadlin doesn't complain about memory or anything other than
it not being an image file. I've read the loadlin.txt manual and HOWTOs
on the web and couldn't find answers

IF that doesn't work, is there any shortcut to run the part of
the install script that asks " do you want to make a bootdisk". I can
just make several and hope to find one at a bad time :)

Thanks,

Jim Pendley

anything) you can trim it to as little as two hours or as long as eight,
depending on what you want to install.

It would be really nice if:
1) It supported all single-click operations for those of us physically
incapable of double-clicking,
2) There was a way to tell it to NOT try to autosave KDE apps that don't
respond to the "save yourself" message. That annoying box makes MS software
seem almost usable.

For now, I'm stuck with KDE (not bad, but not as fast).

Re: [expert] IP Masq / networking

2000-06-02 Thread ago

Hi !

On the LAN boxes the gateway should be the masqing linux box and on the
linux box the gateway will be the router or the IP of the ISP (if they
gave you an address). Ask them what IP you should assign to the gateway
address.

Re: [expert] realplayer for linux

2000-06-02 Thread Tuukka Lahtela

I have used realplayer 7.0 and it has worked well. I used the self
extracting one and was very pleased of how well it has worked on all of
the linux distros that I have tried(Mandrake, RedHat, Corel). There is a
version 8.0 but I have not tried it yet.

The root user on your machine does not have permission to start X-based
applications on your screen. To fix this you need to do two things:

1) (As the user you started X with) type "xhost localhost"
2) As the root user before you run the go-gnome script type "export DISPLAY=:0"

Number 1 says to your X server that any user is allowed to display
programs as long as they are on the localhost (Your machine), if you
care about security you should probably do "xhost -localhost" after the
install to turn this off again

Number 2 says that any X-based applications you run in you current shell
they should contact display number 0 on the local machine to appear
on. (By the way this will only work if you run bash as your shell, other
shells set variables in different ways ...)

This should solve your problem

2000-06-02 Thread Eugene Grimsdell

I found a rp7_linux20_libc6_i386_b1.bin file at www.realplayer.com you just log
in as root and sh the file ie:
# ./rp7_linux20_libc6_i386_b1.bin
before I forget when it is downloaded chmod +x The file
I still have a copy and it runs on any distro of linux I tested it on ie
Mandrake, Redhat, Corel and Slackware and is about 7 MB.
