[expert] Font size in 7.1

2000-06-07 Thread Stephen Boulet

I just upgraded from 7.0 to 7.1, and I'm noticing that font sizes in apps like
kmail are quite larger than they were in 7.0.

Can someone explain what's going on, and if font sizes are set globally
somewhere? Thanks.

Can reproduce here. Should we have the packager taken out and
shot?  Ummm  I have a better idea, let's ask for a refund. ;-}

Yes it looks like the rpm needs to be repackaged. I can compile
from the tarball and it works but if I build from the src.rpm or
use the binary rpm... I reproduce the behavior of which you
speak.

Get out your distro CDs and add a few packages, like the libs
that have -devel- in the name and make sure you have a version of
the compiler for g++ to point to. Alternatively, go to
www.everybuddy.com and download the rpm. You cannot find chat
rooms as easily, but you have access to Yahoo, MSN, AIM, and ICQ
in one program. I know that rpm works, and if you have an
addiction to or friends on any of those services, you can use it
until someone replaces the package.

There was discussion of this on Cooker. There was a transmission
error uploading hydrogen3 betas and hydrogen3-ext.iso had some
rpm files filled to proper length with nulls. This was later
corrected but there are still people who downloaded the early one
and did not get the update. If you have an early
hydrogen3-ext.iso, it is NOT the same as helium. The distro
didn't change but the upload did.

Re: [expert] mandrake-ext iso's corrupt?

2000-06-07 Thread Brook humphrey

It's not the cd that's bad it's the hardware. I fell into this mistake
today. It turned out to be a bad cdrom drive. The reason that mandrake
has been getting all this mail lately is because of bad hardware. There
distro is highly optimized and hardware manufacturers have been putting
out substandard hardware. This means that the optimized code has
problems running on machines cdroms, hard drives, motherboards, etc.
that have until now been just barley getting along in the industry.

With windows it is not optimized so windows will usually run on this
substandard hardware. Windows may even get blamed for crashing sometimes
when it is the fault of the hardware. Linux-mandrake however will have
problems installing on this same hardware. The solution is to make sure
that you use good quality parts. Don't go out and but the cheapest
hardware and expect it to work all the time or for as long.

Good point. Not only do the drives have to be properly terminated, but the
HA has to be manaully terminated from the BIOS. I seem to recall a problem
with the HA's auto-termination, so forcing it to be terminated or not, as
appropriate, might help.

What kind of external DSL modem? I'm using a 3COM Home Connect ADSL

anything funky like that. My ISP gave me a gateway IP address and I use

Hmmm, I run a 2940AU with two Seagate drives, but not LVD, whatever that
is. Just for the halibut, try moving the thing to a higher SCSI ID number
& see what happens. It's an old trick for marginal SCSI interface
chips. In this case, your hardware proably isn't marginal, but the 2940
driver is setting its timeout too short.

I am making an assumption that they are. However, I just noticed that the
drives are no longer being detected as "LVD", they are coming up as "Ultra2-SE".
I _believe_ this may have changed when I swapped to an older, 7 device cable to
allow the connection of a (also older) active terminator. The drives are
connected to the proper 68-ping connector on the 2940U2W and termination is
disabled on the card.

Are there significant differences between older and newer (LVD compliant?)
cables and terminators? Although I've been using SCSI for many years, I wouldn't
consider myself a pro!

BTW, I'm using the older cables since I'm waiting for my new seven device
cables and terminators to come in.

[expert] mandrake-ext iso's corrupt?

I have downloaded the mandrake 7.1 iso's (inst and ext), with md5

some funky $!@# in it.

The md5sums check good on both, I even DL the md5sums from another site

[expert] Gaim 0.9.18 RPM troubles.

Hello.

After the recent discussion on getting Gaim 0.9.18, I tried it out. I can't
get .tar.gz to compile as I don't have all the stuff needed to do this. So a
trip to the ftp site at marko.net ended me with an RPM. After installing it,
all seems to go well, but after siginig on, the second window appears for the
splittest of split seconds and the app colses it's self. The debug script is
so fast I can't read it and the debug window closes with the rest of the app.

If I open it from a terminal, the sam happens but in the terminal I get
"segmentation fault" which doesn't sound too good at all.

Any help would be appreciated, either getting the tar or RPM going. I used
gaim quite extensively, because it is a good program.

PS. Another person suggested getting the linux script from aol. I tried this
but How in the world are you supposed to execute a file not marked executable?

Thanks,
Ivan trail.

I am new at this but I am learning!

Pentium code tightens timing requirements on the drives
themselves and on the chipsets on the motherboards as well. 386
code allows much greater variance from specifications.

If your drive is Western Digital or your motherboard is one of
several chipsets made to accommodate the WD drive and its weird
timing and the fact that it blows off the CRC, then you have a
problem with hardware and will be bound by it to distros who use
386 code. That is the difference--Mandrake is pushing the
envelope in the direction of rather exact conformance to
specifications on the part of the hardware, while compiling to
maximize processor performance, and a lot of sloppy hardware has
been built assuming the laxity of the 386 code which is used in
the dominant desktop system. Now those same folks are saying
things like "we don't support linux" when they get tech calls.

The "We don't support linux," answer is easy to give, apparently
a lot easier than the redesign to build the drive or motherboard
right the first time.

[expert] external dsl modem (Westel)

2000-06-07 Thread David M. Kufta

I have a client who would like to install an external dsl modem on his
Linux system and seem to be having one devil of a time getting this
thing to work. I s anyone on the list currently using adsl with an
external modem under Linux-Mandrake, and might anyone have some
information as to how to set this up? pppoe calls a script
/usr/sbin/adsl-start which doesnot seemed to be installed and for the
life of me I can seem to find it. Ideas anyone ?

Hi Denis,

Upgrade ... the biggest thing I have always expected from an upgrade
no matter what the OS, is safety and reliability. I don't want to lose
what I have and I want it to reliably upgrade the 'packages' or 'programs'
included with the operating system while maintaining compatibility
with the hardware I have.

Of course, new and different features without compromising safety,
security and reliability.

Tall order, but necessary.

Thanks for asking,
Bambi

I am running on LM 6.1, so your mileage may vary.

If you are going to be consistent with Warner Bros. naming conventions

Hmmm, I'd have done those as "192.168.2.*", or provided the exact IP

ccurley@charlesc $ cat /etc/exports
/mnt/cdrom 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0(ro)

It may use /var/lib/nfs/xtab, but I've never heard of it until now. I edit
/etc/exports. It looks like nfs uses /var/lib/nfs/xtab to store
information about nfs mount points.

well i am not sure how you got my e-mail but i'll play! Linux Mandrake user
10 months now. I am up to V7.0 from 6.0 and lovin it! Realistically though
the only reason to upgrade is security or hardware functionallity, but then
all you need to do is upgrade the required libs. If your kernel does it's
job now without flaw or error then there is no real reason for a complete
upgrade. well in my opinion that is.
i do have a question for you though, how do i fix a broken DNS resolve? Ok
here is the scenario...

AMD K6-2 500 PC-100 196MB SDRAM 3COM NIC system up for 29+ days after new
board install. network connectivity via cable modem, road runner is the ISP.
good fast connetion until yesterday morning around 0600! here is what i can
do:

I can ping localhost
I can ping an IP 24.24.244.24
I can obtain an IP with either the ifup eth0 or /etc/rc.d/init.d/network
start commands
I CAN'T resolve a DNS i.e - ping www.linux-mandrake.com, will not resolve
the IP.

all ISP information is correct the NIC is configured correctly and has been
running for 28 days without error or conflict. my ISP has reset my account
and when I ifup eth0 or /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start i can get an IP and
it has been verified by my ISP as correct. I have read all my books (A whole
heap of them!) and cannot seem to find an answer that works or addresses my
issues. I DO NOT want to shut the system down. I am in an uptime competition
with my neighbors NT machine.
I am, or was running a firewall along with numerous other security
implementations, again this system configuration has not changed in the last
month!

Have any ideas?

I expect to be able to upgrade from a prior version much easier
than I did from Mdk 6.1 to Mdk 7.0. I would want to upgrade without
having to trash my present setup. I tried to upgrade from 6.1 earlier
this year and some things functioned some didn't, I had to do a clean
install to get a full functioning version. It seems this would be a
"doable thing" with a distro based on RPM's.

[expert] Help with NFS export on LM 7.02

2000-06-07 Thread Bill Shirley

I am trying to NFS export a file on my LM 7.02 system. I have put the
directory in /etc/exports but still can not access the export from my other
linux system. I have:
(bugsbunny = 192.168.2.11)
(elmo = 192.168.2.1)

[root@bugsbunny rc3.d]# cat /etc/exports
/mnt/loop0 192.168.*(ro,no_root_squash) # Linux Mandrake CD 1 iso
/mnt/loop1 192.168.*(ro,no_root_squash)

elmo:~# mount -t nfs bugsbunny:/mnt/loop0 /mnt/nfs
mount: bugsbunny:/mnt/loop0 failed, reason given by server: Permission
denied

[root@bugsbunny rc3.d]# tail -2 /var/log/messages
Jun 7 19:30:01 bugsbunny kernel: SB 4.13 detected OK (220)
Jun 7 19:33:20 bugsbunny mountd[7812]: refused mount request from
elmo.shirley.org for /mnt/loop0 (/): no export entry

Ok, it doesn't work.

I did find out (from the man files) that rpc.mountd does not use the
/etc/exports file, but instead uses /var/lib/nfs/xtab.

"Usually, a file system and the hosts it should be made available to are
listed in the /etc/exports file, and invok-
ing exportfs -a whenever the system is booted. The exportfs(8)
command makes export information available to both
the kernel NFS server module and the rpc.mountd daemon."

But exportfs -a does not work.

[root@bugsbunny rc3.d]# ls -l /var/lib/nfs/
total 16
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 264 Jun 7 14:09 etab
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root0 Dec 20 20:35 rmtab

drwx-- 2 root root 4096 Mar 27 02:53 sm.bak/
-rw--- 1 root root4 Jun 5 16:02 state
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root0 Jun 7 14:09 xtab
[root@bugsbunny rc3.d]# exportfs -va
exporting 192.168.*:/mnt/loop1
exporting 192.168.*:/mnt/loop0
[root@bugsbunny rc3.d]# ls -l /var/lib/nfs/
total 16
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 264 Jun 7 19:39 etab
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root0 Dec 20 20:35 rmtab
drwx-- 2 root root 4096 Mar 27 02:53 sm/
drwx-- 2 root root 4096 Mar 27 02:53 sm.bak/
-rw--- 1 root root4 Jun 5 16:02 state
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root0 Jun 7 19:39 xtab

Notice the before and after the exportfs command the xtab file size is zero.
I think I have done everything correctly but it still does not work. Anyone
have any clues how to get this to work?

Bill

P.S. I have stopped and started /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S60nfs several times in the
process.

Benjaminhow did you place your order? Here's the results
I got from a search for 'Linux Mandrake 7.1':

Sorry, no products were found in your search for 'Linux Mandrake 7.1'

Mandrake was totally left off of the list of 13 Penguin
Power CD's when I chose to navigate to:

 Software->Apps and Utilities->Operating Systems->Linux CDs & Bundles

But an actual search for 'Linux Mandrake 7.0' turned up
these 4 items:

 Linux-Mandrake PowerPack 7.0
Deluxe Linux Mandrake Operating System 7.0
Linux Mandrake Operating System Complete 7.0
 Linux-Mandrake Penguin Power CD 7.0

However, searches for 'Linux Mandrake' and 'Linux Mandrake 7'
come up with a 'no match' just like my original search for
'Linux Mandrake 7.1'.

I don't see very much support any more at LinuxMall/LinuxMart
for the Linux Mandrake distro.

Reply to my own letter.

It seems that mdkinstall, when asked what security level to get for the
user, sets up a handle, in my case level = medium. After this the base
system is loaded.
Later when I was asked to download security stuff, I asked for
netscape-128, ssh, pgp and ssl, then a new handle was set - that
obviosly
overtook the first one. This ment that the original kernel, could not
function, as certain apects of the system was asking for kernel-secure.

Re: [expert] GNU/Linux -- leader or follower?

2000-06-07 Thread Cecil Watson

GNU/Linux leader or follower It is both? Linux is leading the charge to
run on different platforms. I don't think a week goes by without hearing
about Linux running on something new. Or new products(embedded systems,
PDAs) designed with Linux in mind! It follows because sometimes we as Linux
users may have to wait a month or two for new drivers, etc.

WMP(spell checked as wimp ;-) is proprietary and nothing can be done about
that. With more and more companies opening up and willing to work with one
another maybe we'll see reduced waiting time for the latest and greatest.
Microsoft doesn't seem to understand this: Together we can accomplish more.
The Internet and computers were built on people borrowing from one another.
If the two guys that invented the spreadsheet had patented and closed it,
would be had 1 2 3, Excel, or StarCalc?

Microsoft in using a lot of smoke and mirrors in it's current advertising
campaign. How long has speak recognition been around? Granted it is better
today (and available, IBM, DragonSystems to name a few) then it was five
years or even a year ago. Microsoft does not offer anything in this area.
Want speak recognition on Linux? Check out this link
http://www.linuxcare.com/viewpoints/lina/11-22-99.epl. What streaming
video? The Realplayer is available, or check this out
http://coruscant.netrevolution.com/pub/AES/StreamingServer/. (Jean-Michel
is the man) How about audio? Check out http://icecast.org/. MP3 isn't
going anywhere (sorry RIAA ;-). You can find all kinds of goodies at
www.freshmeat.net or http://linux.tucows.com/.

Some people cannot (or choose not to) see past Microsoft's FUD. As a Linux
user, I attend my local LUG and try and help newbies (like I'm not ;-) learn
more about Linux. It is up to us to help chart the course of Linux. Tell a
friend, tell a neighbor. Linux maybe lacking in the "desktop", but it is
getting there. "The future is so bright I gotta wear shades."

Re: [expert] Uptime monitoring

I have been testing netsaint for the last little while. It may be
the tool
you are looking for. It can monitor most of the machines on your network
as well
as printers and webservers. It can also check to see if your oracle
databases
are running. If you add in the reporting modules you can get your uptime
on any
of your machines/database/webservers. It does take a bit of
configuration. Also
you can write your own perl scripts to monitor more specific
applications.You
can get a mandrake specific RPM from www.rpmfind.net or from the
netsaint site
www.netsaint.org

Re: [expert] GNU/Linux -- leader or follower?

2000-06-07 Thread David Talbot

You do make a good point. Mozilla is really creating a problem with thier
standards compliance. Yes I agree that Mozilla is a kick ass browser, but
at the same time they haven't even implemented the LAYER tag or made any
attempt at XBrowser 4.0 compatibility. Alot of pages out there are filled with
if(document.all || document.layers)
{ //DHTML }
else { get a new browser }

Now, I'm not advocating web designers use proprietary extentions in thier
design, but at the same time for Mozilla to truly have any value as being a
full size "Caddalic" browser ((Big and covers all features) vs a "VW
Beetle" (Small, Sexy)) It needs to implement the standards hell of LAYER
tags and document.innerHTML ect ect.

Good example, I dual boot (spending 90% of my time in Linux) my primary
home machine. Sometimes (I do web apps/database integration ect) I need to
work with a client who uses some ActiveX control like Crystal reports...
damn no compatibility. Maybe Mozilla could pour a little WINE in...

I guess part of my complaint in many OS projects dwell too much on
standards compliance at the expense of creating a usable product. If you
wait for something the be a "Standard" you will always be a follower.

As for UI design and so on. Microsoft had a good idea with the task bar,
the start menu is a little klunky, I despise the 98/2k icons that appear
next to the start button. I despise the 200 programs that all demand a tiny
icon in the "memory resident" tray. What would be a good new thing for the
2D OS enviroment? What could be a leader? Easel's foray looks like a leader
product. Evolution? A me too that even looks like outlook. For all the
rhetoric that Helix has been tossing about on it, it's outlook.

There are two basic strategies in place at the biggest computer companies.
Embrace, Extend, Extinguish(Microsoft), Kill them With compatibility(IBM),
Lead and help others be compatiable (ICQ). What is linux right now? The 4th
option. Incompatible but more stable and "done right". I needs to probably
adopt the second and third.

[expert] upgrade

2000-06-07 Thread HANS-ÅKE BERGQVIST

Hello

Have just upgraded to 7.1beta and the long upgradeprocess
could not be fulfilled as the partition would grew out of space. Cannot still
understand it as I had checked the space before. It would be fine if the
installation program could check the space requirements beforehand and warn
before all went wrong and I (of course) had to backup and install from
scratch.
By the way - this version did not fix the menus (gnome and
kde) in the superb way 7.02 did. In that case all programs where there. Had not
to do any fixing.

Don't remember wath version, but the lasts from cooker.

So, can't reboot the system.
Says:
a)sh:error in loading shared libraries : readline.so.4.1 : cannot open
shared object file :
no such file or directory.
b)init: no more processes left in this runlevel
init: id "1" respawning too fast : disabled for 5 minutes
(and this to id=6)

By the install with kpackage and 'check dependency' enabled, there were no
errors !

Did an upgrade to reinstall the original (7) bash and readline packages, but
can only select the bash1 and readline, no bash found when in 'upgrade'
but on the CD.

init-version 2.77 is booting.

Did a copy of the downloaded RPMS on a zip disk before shutdown.

What can I do without doing a complete reupdate or reinstall ?

well i am not sure how you got my e-mail but i'll play! Linux Mandrake user

the only reason to upgrade is security or hardware functionallity, but then
all you need to do is upgrade the required libs.

[expert] GNU/Linux -- leader or follower?

2000-06-07 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I am exhilirated by Linux and at the same time concerned about its
future:

I have been using Linux for about a year and a half (first Red Hat and
for the past year Linux-Mandrake, now upgrading to 7.1, and I just love
it. For a year I ran Linux and nothing but Linux. Recently, due to the
continuing encroachment of Windows Media Player, I have had no choice
but to install Win98 as a dual Linux-Windows system. Why? Almost
overnight stations everywhere were switching to WMP. For me this is not
a question of entertainment alone but of professional needs. As a
Russian translator, I suddenly discovered that most Russian television
stations now broadcast their domestic programs in Russian using WMP? The
same goes for many other languages.

And the same goes for many other areas that Microsoft is relentlessly
pursuing even as the judge is about to hand his verdict later this
afternoon.

The following two articles made a very deep impression on me. I am NOT a
programmer, but the writing is or seems to be on the wall. What
precisely? Not that Linux is dying. On the contrary, it is exploding all
over and conquering new territory every day, from the new IBM S/390
mainframe computers down to embedded systems. I enjoy reading LinuxToday
(www.linuxtoday.com) just to read the daily headlines that are a
rollcoll, a cavalcade of Linux's fantastic successes. Recently, I
discovered that GeoVRML will bring 3D for the first time to Linux.

The authors of the two articles below express deep concern about a key
tendency in Linux, namely, that of FOLLOWING technological innovations
on the Windows and Mac platforms (I don't mean Microsoft's "innovation"
but that of Windows developers and third party software companies
developing applications for Windows and the Mac) rather than LEADING
them.

The first article deals with a potentially astonishing development for
computers in general and a devastating blow to Open Source, namely, the
Star Wars talkie computer strategy, i.e. a possible Voice Recognition
OS, developed by Microsoft or Apple. The author bemoans the nearly total
neglect of this and other critical technologies by the Open Source
Community. He claims that such a talkie technology would have to be an
OS technology, and he opines that this may well be Microsoft's secret
plan, i.e. to keep stalling until the technology is fully developed
(shades of their first attempts at a browser, at Windows Media Player
and at a PocketPC). If Microsoft succeeds, the author believes that it
will continue its monopoly power for at least another generation.

URL:

http://linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2000-06-07-017-06-PS-MS

The second is an article on Microsoft Patents ASF Media Format: Stops
Reverse Engineering. Again, the author laments the fact that the Open
Source community would rather spend its time creating yet another text
editor rather than getting together and forming its own standard,
software and pushing for its implementation and universal adoption.
Again, he implies that Linux is a follower and not a leader.

URL:
http://linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2000-06-07-002-20-OS-MS-SW

I am not raising these issues because I have the answers but in order to
spark a serious discussion by professionals about the issues raised in
these and other articles.

Is GNU/Linux a leader or a follower and should it be?

If RealPlayer falls by the wayside (the signs are already there, no
matter how rosy the 120 million base of users picture looks because
Microsoft has bundled its WMP Server with Windows 2000), what will Linux
have left. We will be surfing the Web blind, groping in the darkness of
a Microsoft world dominated by Microsoft's "embrace, extend and
extinguish" concept of standard-adherence. In other words, we will be at
the mercy of Microsoft.

More importantly, Linux will be at the mercy not only of Microsoft but
of proprietary software companies in general, of strangulation by UCITA,
etc.

My own general impression after being a regular reader of LinuxToday for
over a year is that Linux is, generally speaking, REACTING to
developments in the proprietary world rather than leading it by
developing new technologies. Linux is obviously a great visionary
achievement by a dedicated cooperative worldwide movement, but it began
as an attempt to duplicate UNIX on the PC (and also recently on the
Mac). KDE is fabulous, and, like everyone else, I am very excited about
KDE2, but again, it is an attempt to duplicate Windows (albeit in a
superior way). So is Koffice. And I guess so is Gnome. And so is Mozilla
an attempt at creating a superior browser rather than a whole new
technology that might make a browser obsolete in the first place (such
as the Napster, for instead, or Gnutella). And Sun's StarOffice, my
default Office program, a wonderful, feature-rich program more than
sufficient for most of us, is again an attempt (successful, I assume) to
duplicate and possibly to outdo Microsoft Office).

So, is Linux a lea

One question, do upgrades mean the *entire* system or periodic updates of
various packages? A number of times in the past I've wanted to update a
single package (this is with another distro, not Mandrake) and couldn't find
it for my distro. So I always end up compiling and installing myself.

Case in point: the helix installation messed up the international keyboards
on my system. I can't get the keyboard applet to work anymore and I really
need it? So whatcha gonna do? Compile GNOME myself, I guess. Although, maybe
I'll get my hands on a new 7.1 distro and try that beforehand.

Good luck,

patch for vsound for the G2 player:

   Hi all,

I have released a patch to the vsound program which allows it to work
   with the G2 RealPlayer.

   The original freshmeat announcement was:

"VSound is a sort of like a `virtual audio loopback cable'. That
is, it allows you to record the output audio stream of a program
(similar to connecting a loopback cable to the line in and line
out jacks on the sound card, and recording the sound from the line
in jack, but without the DA/AD conversion losses). One possible
use for this application is as part of a RealAudio to wav file
   converter."

I have set up a web page for the patch here:

   http://www.zip.com.au/~erikd/vsound/

which has a pointer to the original vsound program (and a local copy)
as well as a simple explanation of how it works.

   Enjoy,

Here is the program I am using to monitor my network:

Take a look at some of the "demo" sites. Click on the "CPU" green

Pretty nifty program, and not tough to get going at all. I think it might

[expert] [Expert] How can I?

2000-06-07 Thread Pj

How can I say this politely? Maybe I can't but I will try.

I've had Denis' call to action on my desktop for more than 8-hours and
hardly no one has noticed. I gotta tell you I get more response to my
posting CERT messages than Denis does to critical issues.

Either this list has dwindled to a dozen voices or there is a lot of you
that are ignoring this important issue. If there are 100 people on this
list and only 10 reply what message is sent to the Mandrake team? Do
they believe 90% of the users are satified? Or do they believe we don't
care?

The only way the Mandrake group is going to listen to users is if our
voices are heard as a unit and not as a bunch of whining infants. We've
been invited to speak so let's speak!

We have brilliant people on this list who know what they are talking
about and what they want: ISP's, IP's, beta testers, security people,
engineer's designer's, administrators, tech, analysists. These are the
folks that come to our rescue. They write the scripts. They share tips
and tricks.

You know who you are! Where are you? Why aren't you speaking out?

This isn't a perfect world and we're not going to get perfect software,
but I'd settle for a workable solution! This ship ain't sinking yet.
Damn the torpeodoes, FULL speed ahead!

Mandrake I want..

1- Handicap shortcuts on the Linux keyboard

2- A quicker, cleaner, and easier to understand install

It seems like a catch 22 as its probably more important to those of us with a
minimal grasp on Linux yet this minimal grasp limits our ability to respond.

 > :~>What do you expect from upgrade?

I have a hard time with installs and upgrades. It would be nice if upgrades
could recognize my choices of sendmail and proftp (e.g. upgrades keep
installing wu-ftp). The dificulty is designing and maintaining that chosen
system design.

A report on non-Mandrake packages (e.g. htdig) after an upgrade would be handy
as I could check functionality, see if newer versions are available etc. Heck a
report on what changes the upgrade made, problems it found (fixed or couldn't
do anything with), etc. would be real nice.

> 5) VANDAL: force install of the core, and upgrade of those packages we

Might have possibilities if it only upgrades installed packages and reports
on other packages...define core

> 2) FORCED: Force instalation of a new "core" system, even if this

For this to be viable it seems you have to check and report the packages that
might break or be newer than what the 'upgrade' would install, before actually
doing it. I'm not sure how a new 'core' might be a downgrade, I doubt I upgrade
'core' rpms (then again are linuxconf and bind 'core'?)

I'm not sure what to say on this one as it seems I have a number of rpms with
missing files, I figured there was a reason for this. Is a repair really a
repair?

Errr, wouldn't the gateway for box one be eth0 ( the one going to the DSL modem??)

Box # 1 gateway device is eth1

Box # 2 gateway is 192.168.100.1

on box 1

in /etc/rc.local at the end of the file
ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -i eth1 -j MASQ
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

Then either do the horrid reboot or type those commands in a
terminal as root on box 1

Now go surf on netscape from box 2 in relative safety.

You can get firewall scripts that lock down box 1 from several
sources--others on the list know where they are, but this will
get you started.

This feature is also available in Debian and Corel distros. It would be
great to have RpmDrake check for updated stable packages (along with
it's dependecies if it's necesary) or uninstalled ones either on CD, or/and
on a Mandrake ftp at your choice. This would save a lot of time searching
for which package is or isn't upgraded yet.

OK, just for grins. Firewalling aside, I have a DSL connection to one
machine with 2 NIC's. One (eth0) goes to the DSL modem the other (eth1
aka 192.168.100.1) goes to a hub. A second machine with single NIC
(eth0 aka 192.168.100.2) goes to same hub. Can I simply assign the
gateway on machine #2 to the second NIC on machine #1 (eth1 -
192.168.100.2)? Both machines run Mandrake-linux 7.01, first was
installed with their "recommended" install option, the second was
installed via "custom/developement" option. Both are set to a low
security setting.

The reason I ask is I'm having a bit$h of a time setting up ipmasq and
am wondering if I have something else wrong that is preventing me from
accessing the internet from machine #2

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me nuts.

Nope. Not that I am aware of. OTOH, you CAN right-click on
the RAM file and select "save as" and save it to disk
instead of hearing it. :-) Then, you *may* be able to
reprocess the file into a WAV format or something.

Maybe your routing is misconfigured. What do you get as a result of running
netstat -r?

What I'm saying is that the reason you get a failure when initialising eth0
is that eth0 is a pcmcia card. The card gets initialised after the network
interface. I think it should be the other way around. I fail to see why the
default setup feels that network components need to be initalised before
hardware components.

I'm pretty sure it comes from legacy Unix configurations where Unix used to
be installed on big servers that never moved. When the kernel booted, all
hardware was configured so you could start configuring network interfaces
very quickly. But with these laptops and PCMCIA cards and whatever, this
reasoning doesn't apply anymore.

I don't know if it's too late but for 7.1, I suggest initialising this type
of hardware (PCMCIA or any other device that needs to load modules into the
kernel) before trying to configure any networking stuff.

Re: [expert] Re: DISCUSION Upgrade (fwd)

2000-06-07 Thread Brian T. Schellenberger

Seems to me that there's been *lots* of discussion on this, but . . .

1. What I *expect* is for an upgrade to mess up my system completely, so
I don't even bother trying; I just backup my personal files and do a
"from scratch" install. This is based on long and unhappy experience
with Linux upgrades, and also based on a personality quirk that doesn't
mind the from-scratch approach so much. Of course, I *never* install
"dot releases"; I only install when my system is getting way out of date
or I have new hardware or a new system that really calls out for an
upgrade.

2. What I would *like* for an upgrade is for it to "just work":

- For all packages which are still in their pristine, "out of the box"
form to simply be upgraded.

- For all packages which have been in any way customized to resolve
conflicts:
  > If the /etc config files have been modified, and the format is the
same as before,
they should be left alone; if the format of the file has changed, my
customizations
should be preserved; if this is not possible, then the upgrade
should ask me to resolve
the conflicts by popping up an xterm, if nothing else, and letting
me use my favorite
editor to patch things up by hand, while showing me the info on the
changes.

Note that since my favorite editor (xvile) isn't in the Mandrake
distribution, this
implies that the upgrade takes place in something more like my
regular working
environment than the usual install environment.

  > If I upgraded the package by installing a newer RPM, figuring out
which one is newer
and going with the latest one, unless the version on the new install
is the same as the
previous install, in which case I presumably downgraded it
deliberately.

  > If I upgraded the package by replacing it with a tarball version,
noting that and
asking if I want the tarball version left alone, deleted and
replaced by the package,
or install the package without deleting the tarball. (Possible
since I always do
tarball installs to /usr/local, and RPMs never do.)

- To keep a log of any conflicts or questionable cases.

- To set things up so that for any packages which changed their
user-level setup, a sort of "mini install" would come up for each user
as they log in which would let them resolve conflicts in a similar
manner. Thus, if the new KDE desktop defaults change all around, give
the user with a customized desktop a chance to integrate the chnages if
they want.

I dont have a CD-ROM burner, and when I do, I doubt I will create CDs for
upgrades. So, I would like timely available CDs for purchase at a fair upgrade
price. Another option would be on-line upgrades/installations, without the
need to burn CDs. I do have a DSL link, so downloading large files is not a
problem, but the CD route would probably be better for most.

Easy upgrade of packages already installed on my system. Full discription of
what is on the CD, not just names, but what the packages are when what they do.
This would help a newbie and inform old timers of changes. Default instalation
of all tools necessary to compile and install new, tar files. I mean a more
complete bare mininum install. More control on what is installed during
install, not just three for four groupings, but ability to select specific
packages during install/upgrade, not just after the fact. Right now, install
everthing, then remove what I dont want later...when I determine what it is and
that I dont need or want it.

Denis,

The problem with expectations is that they area rarely met. However, my
expectations are a flawless install and a program that is not a bloated,
buggy mess. At a minimum I expect:
1- my video card and monitor to be supported without being put in the
position of having to immediately update the drivers from another site.
2- Mandrake to include compatible third-party apps or exclude them until
they are compatible.
3- to be able to register any version of Mandrake I purchase regardless
of the distro or release date. If Mandrake sells it retail, the distro
should be supported and that isn't the practice now.

I don't know about the rest of the list, but I am tired of buying PR in
fancy packages and getting software I can't install. It doesn't mean I
don't love Mdk, I do, but after several months of trying to get a stable
system, I'd like to see some positive results on my end.

Sorry you asked?

Re: [expert] DISCUSION Upgrade (fwd)

2000-06-07 Thread Muzza

Unfortunately Helix doesn't check your system first, it just presents you with a
list of upgrades that are available and it's up to you to remember what you
have already got. They do 'date' them though so that's not too difficult. But
yeah, that would be a very nice feature.

It'd be nice to "upgrade in a window" like with Helix. Ie run a nice
little app which checks your systems tells you which apps can be
upgraded safely, lets you pick which ones to upgrade and goes and does
it. It should also tell you other things that it thinks need upgrading
but might damage your system/can't be upgraded while running (kernel etc
:) ) and prompts you to reboot and do a "normal" upgrade if you want to
upgrade those packages.

Probably quite tricky, but you did ask ... :)

Hey Denis,
Give us some time to download/burn iso's or however we we go about
getting the latest and greatest version 7.1. When that's bedded down, you can
expect the usual flood of replies ;).
Thanks,

Hi, folks

It feels strange when I have to reply to my own message but... I thought
that "upgrade" is an extremely important topic, yet no one wants to
discuss it. Does it mean that you are not interested (so we should stop
worying about upgrade) or what? I repeat:

RE: [expert] Uptime monitoring

Maybe you can do the program by yourself :

If do type 'last' on a shell line, you'll get the connections of everyuser,
but also the reboot/restart dates.

If last tells you nothing, then maybe you've got to touch some files, so
that it can record data.

Do a 'man last' for more information.

That's the way I'd do it, but maybe there's another way to achieve it...

[expert] [OT] ODBC : how to get data from an MS-Access database ?

2000-06-07 Thread Bois, Mathieu

Hi,

I've installed iODBC (but I can install unixODBC, or a nother product if
necessary), and reading docs I've discovered (at least it is my
understanding) that if I want to connect to MS-Access via ODBC, I need an
Access driver... (What a wonderful norm of interconnectivity :-((( )

I want to connect to MS-Access with PHP on an Apache intranet server.

I'm aware of Openlink drivers, but I'm not happy with pricing, size of the
drivers softwares, and the fact that it is a binary distribution (but
especially price and size).

So, if you have a smoother solution, I'd like to hear about it!

Thanks and regards

Mathieu

is this a common problem ? is there any way to fix that ?
i am downloading the new Mandrake 7.1 now...will 7.1 know how to deal with
Kisdn and with my card ?

I use uptimed 0.1.5, which is stand-alone; I'd swear I got it
from freshmeat... It keeps a list of the top 45 uptimes. The
author may be coming out with an option to sort the list by
boot-time.

If you'd like, I'll send the gzipball to you if I was wrong
about freshmeat.

Sincerely,
Ron
