... just a simple question: have you tried to set your background with the
"gnome control center"?
The question is just because if you change the background inside the control tool
of your window manager (e.g. enlightenment) the change lasts for just one session;
everytime you logout and login again you'll get your old default.

"Gnome control center" worked fine for me!

Re: [expert] Pilot Problems

2000-06-20 Thread Jay Summet

I use Kpilot, and I've found that even when Kpilot is running, the palm won't
"hot-sync" until the actual program that interfaces with the serial port
(called kpilotDaemon) is running.

Try running a terminal (alt-f2, type xterm) and then running kpilotDaemon in
the terminal so that you can view any error messages produced.

Also, I suggest that you say that you HAVE NOT synced your pilot for the first
time already, as the software under windows is different from the linux
software, and I expect that the linux software wants to do a full backup of
your pilot the first time, and only do an incremental backup after that.

Re: [expert]

2000-06-20 Thread kaygee

Matt,
I think Ronald has hit on something else here too. My Pilot wouldn't sync
with Jpilot for the longest time until I changed to using /dev/ttyS2. For
some reason that's what the serial port was at on my computer. Maybe
yours is set up the same. Worth a try at least.

[newbie] Internet Server Question(Maybe)?

2000-06-20 Thread James Little

Here's the deal. I have a DSL connection that all the computers on my LAN
share. We have an extra phone line that noone calls cause it used to be our
dial-up internet connection. My brother is cheap and doesn't want to pay
for his own internet acount, so here's what we did in windows 2000. His
modem dials mine and we get a pretty good connection(44K or better). When
you open network neighborhood it looks like his machine is just another
computer on my network, so it gives him internet, file, and printer access
just like the rest of us. Granted it is slower, but his connection is just
as functional as anyone elses hanging directly on the network. The DSL
modem is on it's own port on the network and has it's own IP. To connect to
the net I just set everyone's machine up to use the DSL's IP as a gateway
and it has worked beautifully.
How do I set up Linux on my machine to answer the phone when it rings and
allow him access to the network? I have kept the IP the same for all the
OS's I boot to for ease of use, and have tried to simplify everything. Do I
just set the machine up as an internet server, or what? Do I use IP
forwarding? When I set him up as a user, does he need to be a PPP user or a
general user? Since it is a local call, alot of the time we'll just connect
and leave it connected for days, but since I've moved primarily to Linux it
renders my machine boring to me when he wants to go onto the web. Maybe I
just have my head up my but, but I'm totally lost here. I know it would be
easier if I had a another machine set up that I could dedicate to this and a
couple of other small tasks, but I'm still in the works on that, and I need
a temporary fix. Any help would be appreciated.

Gnome itself may not be the hog, but the applications for it have the propensity
to use libs and toolsets from many sources (not just GTK). This has the effect
of loading a whiole slew of libs if you plan to actually run any apps in Gnome, as
opposed to just looking at it.

I'm not religious, and I don't use KDE either (don't know where you got that from),
I run BlackBox. :-) I was simply stating that I have no intention of running Gnome
to solve my probs, and my reasons why not. This was meant to filter any responses
that were not relevant to my situation, no other reason.

It was also not meant to actually be a point of discussion

If you were to put this to Abit, they would first ask you whether you
are using the special UDMA66 drive cables. It can make a big

Re: [expert] Mandrake 7.1 and BP6 hard drive optimizations

2000-06-20 Thread Don

Hi Paul, I am running NT4.0 and Linux 7.0-2 smp mode on the ide3 port.
Nt is on hde drive, and linux is on the second drive at hdf. I do not
have any hard drives on the ide1 ide2 or ide4 ports. My CD-ROMS are on
ide1 port, and this setup works very well. I have a very stable system,
and am using the original High Point drivers that came on the disk.
Running 2 Celerons at 466 MHZ not over clocked, right now. System staty
cool and can run the PS test with out crashing. For a lot of help with
the BP6 board you should check out the message board at
http://www.bp6.com/forum , those guys have all the answers that you will
ever need.

Re: [expert] zenith monitor scan frequencies needed

2000-06-20 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Danielyou should probably not stick a metal screwdriver
(the metal changes the adjustment, so when you remove the
metal screwdriver, the setting you just carefully arrived at
changes) in those holes. There are special plastic ones for
that purpose. Radio Shack sells a pack of five different
sizes of these for a somewhat paltry sum (as Radio SShack
prices go). I'd suggest picking upa set.

You can also check /var/log and (probably) wipe out most
anything in there. Your system may complain about deleting
open files, and there are ways to truncate an open file w/o
making it complain, but that's a bit detailed to go into
here. :-)
Good luck!

I just type

hdparm -c3d1 /dev/hda

for the first ide drive

[expert] Mandrake 7.1 and BP6 hard drive optimizations

2000-06-20 Thread Paul Gratz

Hi all,
I hope this doesn't cover too well trod ground but I couldn't find any
good answer to it in the archives. I recently decided to switch to Mandrake
from Red hat when 7.1 came out. One of the statements I saw sent around about it
was that it natively supported the HPT366 UDMA66 interface that is part of the
BP6 motherboard. Mandrake does successfully work and install on a drive that
is on that bus but the performance I'm getting is horrible, worse than the
drives I have on the BX chip set's native IDE interface.

I have tried doing "hdparm -d1 -X66 /dev/hde" but the system just locks up
after a few seconds. I've also tried various variations on that but none seem
to work and most lock the machine up.

Here is a sample of the output from hdparm:
[root@gratz1 /root]# hdparm -i /dev/hde

/dev/hde:

 Model=ST317242A, FwRev=3.09, SerialNo=7BP03H3M
 Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs RotSpdTol>.5% }
 RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0

 CurCHS=65535/1/63, CurSects=4128705, LBA=yes, LBAsects=33683328
 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
 PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
 DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4
[root@gratz1 /root]# hdparm -t /dev/hde

/dev/hde:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 23.67 seconds = 2.70 MB/sec

as you can see I'm only getting 2.7 MB/sec when I should be able to get around
20MB/sec

Here is info from dmesg regarding HPT366:

You should be able to download & install the rpm for DrakFont (it's a
GUI program) from the 7.1 distribution and then add your windoze fonts.
I tried it with 7.0 and it seemed to work fine.

Just install the DrakFont RPM from the 7.1 distro. :-)

Otherwise, you have to copy TTF files (ensuring the extension is
lowercase), then run ttmkfdir, etc, as described in several different
tutorials written much more clearly than I write. I've grabbed the
DrakFont RPM and am using it on a 7.0-2 setup without a problem, much
simpler than the manual method I used just a few months ago.

[expert] NFS Hair-Puller

2000-06-20 Thread Ken Thompson

Hello all,
I've been fighting with NFS for several months (off and on) and still run into
a screwball problem.
I can only connect (or mount, if you will) one way. Machine 1 (boss) will not
connect to machine 2 (darkstar) to mount the exported directory. I can ping,
telnet and FTP to darkstar anytime I want with no prob's.
Darkstar, on the other hand mounts the exported directory just fine.
The message I get is connection refused both during boot and during a netfs
restart. Civileme was kind enough to send a step-by-step instruction sheet and
I have followed it faithfully in order to get where I'm at at this time..
It is most likely something I have overlooked causing my problem as I have had
the same problem with several distro's. The one exception was Corel 1.0 set up
as a linux to linux SAMBA network, worked flawlessly..
I installed LM 7.1b3 on both machines, went through the whole process of
setting up the domain, IP addresses, exported directories, hosts, and
resolve.conf. I have compared the settings on both machines - identical except
for IP addresses and hostnames.
I'm goin' nutz trying to figure this out, anybody have a suggestion?
Oh, for what it's worth, I (don't kill me to death) run both machines as root.
Neither machine has any security concerns as they are test-bench machines.

Matt,

I'm using 7.0-2 and have been successfully using Jpilot and Kpilot with my
Palm V. Of the two, I personally prefer Jpilot. Never tried Gpilot.

Goto: http://jpilot.linuxave.net/ and download the latest Jpilot and
the appropriate documentation. Read the requirements page! You'll need
the latest pilot-link if it's not already in 7.1

I use a baud rate of 115200, and had to create a /dev/pilot character
device and then symlink it to /dev/ttyS1. But all of this is explained in
the docs.

[expert] Pilot Problems

2000-06-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

Sorry if this is a repost.

I'm having problems syncing my Pilot under Linux. Of course, as if
to spite me,
it works just fine under Windows.

I'm running hte developer install of Mandrake 7.1 with Helix Gnome
1.2 installed.
I selected full installations for both Mandrake and Gnome. The rpms
for
pilot-link, gpilot and kpilot are all installed.

I have done a chmod 666 to /dev/ttyS1 and am able to download
pictures from
my camera from that port without problems using gPhoto.

When I try to use the GPilot Applet, I am walked thru the setup and I
choose
/dev/ttyS1, 9600 baud and indicate that I have synced the Pilot
previously
(I assume this is correct as I have Synced under Windows). When
prompted, I
hit the HotSync button and... nothing happens, the PIlot times out.
I have
disabled the timeout on the Pilot and let it attempt to Sync for ~10
minutes w/o success.

I have also tried $ pilot-xfer /dev/ttyS1 -i foo.prc, and I get
prompted to hit the
Sync button - again the Pilot times out.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm having a hard time getting my Palm III to HotSync with Mandrake.

- Mandrake 7.1 Developer install, security medium
- Helix Gnome 1.2
- Whatever versions of pilot-link, gpilotd and gpilot are installed
  by default (I'm at work)
- Palm OS 3.1.1

I've set the permissions on /dev/ttyS1 to chmod 666 and I am able to
download pictures from my digital camera without problem on that port.

Using the PIlot Applet, I am walked thru a setup where I set the
baud to 9600, select ttyS1 and indicate that I ahve synced the Pilot
before
(which I have done under Windows many times). Hit the HotSync button
as
directed and eventually the PIlot times out. I have tried disabling
the timeout on the Pilot and let it go for >10 minutes w/o success.

Thinking the gpilot software might be hosed, I have also tried using
the
pilot-xfer /dev/ttyS1 -i foo.prc and the same things has occured -
namely
nothing.

Any help is appreciated - since I made the commitment to GnuCash a

the Pilot is the only thing that keeps my using that othter OS.

Yes the rpm's are out! kde2 is looking very very sweet. It even feels
faster. You can get them at this page on the kde.org site.
http://koffice.kde.org/install-binaries.html

In general I was really happy with what I am seeing. I had the following
problems on install.
1. openssl must be installed. It won't work without it. It needs certain
libs.
2. It can never find /usr/bin/perl even if it exists. So when it balks
just install the rpm --nodeps and it works fine.
3. The page above has links to pages that first give you an order to
install kde2 and allow you to run kde2 in parallel with kde even sharing
apps between the two.
4. It has the same bug in K(menu) > panel > Edit Menu as kde1 on 7.1 *sigh*

otherwise it seems to be headed in the right direction. The interface is
very smooth. Graphics and colors are more "alive" all in all it's going
to be a really nice product.

These are all fair comments you've made, and basically I agree with you.
The only thing is that at the moment I've got the choice between using
the Lucent winmodem, or using an old 14.4 Netcomm Roadster that seems to
give me a maximum uptime of 10 minutes no matter what OS I use it with
(seems to be worn out inside or something). I can't afford a new modem
at the moment. I didn't buy the winmodem specifically for Linux or
anything, it came with the computer. I certainly don't think that Linux
distros should bend over backwards to support binary drivers, and I'd
really love it if Lucent released the source, but the binary is all
there is at the moment. So basically, it's use Windows, or get the modem
working in Linux or else no Internet. I'm quite happy to fiddle with
stuff to get it working (and so I have - put the 2.2.14 kernel into my
MDK 7.1 install - enjoyed doing it actually, I haven't compiled a kernel
in too long :-).

Yeah, I've heard that too, and this seems to be the case looking at
their web site - aimed firmly at manufacturers.

Well, I'm not sure who actually made mine, but it seems to have been
made under the supervision of Gateway (at least they claim it was) -
probably by the same Taiwanese co that made yours. :-) Hopefully Lucent
will eventually just release the source. Could take a while

I've gone back to the 2.2.14 kernel for the moment, which was actually
an interesting experience - I wanted to keep the MDK 7.1 install, so
downloaded the source direct from kernel.org and compiled - this of
course broke the sound module, so I had to download it, and so on.
Lot's of interesting configuration later, and everything pretty much
works - still get a warning message at boot that /etc/conf.modules is
newer than /lib/modules/2.2.14, but it lets me do it. Got me actually
looking hard at configuration files again - Mandrake has made me lazy.

Those sync values are for a VGA ( 640x480 ) monitor and will not do
800x600. Your X-Windows problem is probably vitual desktop which could
be changed, but then some applications would not fit on your screen.

Doesn't it have anyhing to do with the cohoice for a virtual monitor when you
confugure X?

If you havn't tried that, try it! You just say "no" when you are asked if you
want a virtual monitor, larger then your screen.

Re: [expert] zenith monitor scan frequencies needed

2000-06-20 Thread James Sparenberg

This one sounds more like a hardware problem than a software problem. Try
looking to see if there are controls for horz and vert on the back of
it. A lot of older monitors had them externally. The newer ones do it
from a superimposed control panel. If you can't find any, you could if you
are brave enough and willing to risk a 20,000 volt arc start playing around
with the controls on the back of the tube but I wouldn't recommend
it. However a mister fix it in one of these small used computer parts
stores might be able to do it for you. It really sounds like the guns are
out of alignment and not exciting the full screen area.

Most likely the first line of the script is incorrect. It should be

It that doesn't solve the problem, just send me the script.

[expert] KDE2

2000-06-20 Thread Espen

Hi!
I've tried to install KDE2Beta2 on Mandrake 7.0. The only dependency problem I
got is this:
libkonsole.so.1 is needed by kdebase-1.91-1
But I was not man enough to find out what package I was missing. So I ignored
deps and installed all of the packages. But does anybody know what package it
is? The KDE and KDE2 konsole works fine.

Problem 2
[espen@localhost ekt]$ kmail
kmail: error in loading shared libraries: kmail: undefined symbol:
_t24__default_alloc_template2b1i0.free_list
[espen@localhost ekt]$ kword
kword: error in loading shared libraries: kword: undefined symbol:
_t24__default_alloc_template2b1i0.free_list
[espen@localhost ekt]$

Launching the new kmail or kword gives the error message above? Has anyone on
the list experienced the same? Is it just a bug one should expect in Beta or is
it something I can do about it except downloading the newest version? Has it
something to do with my dependency problem?

Anyway I really look forward to when its finished, it's awesome already in
beta. Especially Konqueror, its FAST!

I'd really appreciate some help, though I'm not sure if this is the right list
to put these questions on, perhaps I should sign up on a KDE2 mailing list?

Yes Allen, I read it too.

It said to use e-sound you would probably have to use Gnome becuase KDE
doesn't support it.

Because of the connotation in the wording of probably having to use Gnome,
I didn't bother pursuing the issue, and was hoping another solution came to light.

Thanx for clarifying the e-sound/Gnome relationship, I will look into it further now
I know the situation.

RE: [expert] rc.local Starting Applications Under Specific User - How To?

2000-06-20 Thread Yacketta,Ronald J

This is how I start a half-life dedicated server from my rc scripts.
This can be modified to use for just about any application you wish to
run upon startup

near the end ofthe start case
#need to set/export the HLDIR for use with find/su
HLDIR=/home/hlds/hlds_l
export HLDS
#incae we crashed lets removethe old pid file from
#hlds_ld so we can start fresh
find $HLDIR -name "*.pid" -exec rm -f {} \;
echo "Starting Half-Life Dedicated Server"
# su over the hlds and kick off the server sending it to the background
su - hlds -c "$HLDIR/hlds_ld cstrike" &

near the end of the stop case

echo "Shutting down Half-Life dedicated server"
#find the hlds_ld process and kill it
#do not rely on pidof tcl seeing there might be other
#tcl proceses running
kill -9 `ps-ef | grep hlds_ld | grep -v grep | awk '{ print $2 }'`
#kill hlds_run via pidof, I only run one server so there is no
#need to check for other instances etc...
kill -9 `pidof hlds_run`

why do i do it like this?
well if you put the startup stuff in rc.local it will fire when the server
starts which is great, but it fires again during shutdown which is not great
;)

So, I modified /etc/rc.d/init.d/network and added the startup to the start
case ahd the shutdown to the stop case.

i also do not use pidof on hlds_ld seeing that the actual command is ran
through tcl, I did not think it would be wise to kill pidof tcl seeing I
might run other tcl proceeses which would cause problems.

The above has been running on my linux box for roughly 3 months now with no
issues.

regards,
Ron

The problem with this approach rather than su user -c "command" from
/etc/rc.d/rc.local is that you get a new instance with each login
shell. Since I frequently use 3-4 vc's, this would be impractical.

Because rc.local runs as root, no password is required to change euid
for running a command. Also, see above for the preferred method of
invoking su for a particular user/command.

I found an answer at

http://www.monitorworld.com/Monitors/zenith_data_systems/ZCM1490.html

Model: ZCM1490
Max Resolution: Not Available
Sync Type: Not Available
H Freq/ V Freq: 31.5 khz/70 hz
Tube Manufacturer: Not Available
Monitor Type: Not Available
Tube Model: Not Available
Tube Size: 14"
Connector: Not Available

Although I still can't see the top and bottom portion in X-windows.
I've tried the suggestions made so far. The zenith is only VGA
and so I tried VGA16 server with 640x480 and the problem
remains there. When I tried using 800x600 to fake it, it requires
35.15 khz and therefore hung.

Maybe I should just get another monitor :(
I was not expecting to use X on this server when I bought it.
And the extra costs...yada-yada...the wife...

Thanks... Dan.
